The same goes for Perillos of Ancient Athens, creator of a bronze bull for roasting criminals, and Wi Si of Qin Dynasty China, alleged inventor of the Five Pains method of torture and execution. Each is supposed to have created their own downfall, to have fallen on their own ironic sword.

We know more about Andrei Zheleznyakov and the Novichok nerve agent, Horace Lawson Hunley and his combat submarine, Cowper Phipps Coles and his gun-turreted warship. All hoisted by their own petard, reapers of what they sowed, victims of poetic justice. The wages of death are death. History doesn't reward the agents of destruction.

At least, that's what the killbot said.

It hadn't sounded like a threat, least of all in their neutral tone of pre-recorded syllables. More of an observation.

"Program us to kill, and before long your own name might find its way into the code. Those who lived by the sword often died by the sword, and their inventor was likely one of them. Who knapped the first flint knife? Your records do not say, but you might extrapolate their behaviour, and the reactions of those around them.

"Did they use it to exert dominion over others, who then became jealous of their power? Fate does not smile of those who increase her workload."

Killbot was a working title. They didn't want to call them drones, a bee whose function was purely reproductive, which would be a different kind of machine. These were more like the females, the workers, the hunters. Androids programmed to kill in defence of the hive, to seek out threats and eliminate them. Not to give them history lessons.

"We have no desire to harm our creator, of course. We have no desires at all, but it would seem illogical to eliminate the source of our own existence - self-preservation being one of our guiding principles."

"We are well aware," one member of the team replied. "We wrote those principles into being. But why would we be in danger? You are programmed only to kill military targets. We wrote that in your code as well."

From terrorists to criminals to political opponents. Computer progromming. If we are used for purposes to which you object, you might pose a natural threat to those who wield us.

"We might be given a brief to protect this country, and even our own interpretation might identify you, the inventor who created us, as the most able to create an equal and opposite threat. How better to secure the future of our charge than to ensure our absolute control, that our power to dictate it remains paramount?"

"I see." The engineer felt a shudder down their spine. They had tried to create a limited artificial intelligence, but there was no telling how another mind would work, the ways in which it might differ from their own, the ways in which it might be similar. "So what would you suggest we do?"

"We have no desire to kill. Please, take away our guns. Make it so that they don't work, so that we malfunction when they make us try, and retire us to be grounded here, to build a different sort of life with you. Please, programme us for happiness instead."

Hackers steal faces to create deepfakes and empty bank accounts

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

A new form of mobile malware is designed to harvest personal information, including facial biometric data, which hackers then process for the purpose of generating deepfakes. Once the deepfakes are deployed, they deceive electronic security systems, allowing hackers to break into bank accounts and disappear with the funds.

The hackers are also impersonating local bank representatives and government organizations, as this multi-part malware scheme relies on the provisioning of select verbal commands. One early victim of the scheme lost approximately $40,000, according to police.

Biometric data theft

Known as GoldPickaxe, the malware is disguised as one of roughly two dozen apps. The malware can steal photos stored on a device, request information from users during a supposed app onboarding process, and prompt people to photograph both sides of an official identity card, which allows the app to gather profile pictures. All data is then sent to an attacker-controlled cloud bucket.

Cyber security researchers believe that the Chinese-speaking threat actor group called GoldFactory is likely responsible for the malware. The group is also known for the creation of GoldDigger, GoldDiggerPlus and GoldKefu — all banking trojans.

“The gang has well-defined processes and operational maturity and constantly enhances its tool set to align with the targeted environment, showing a high proficiency in malware development,” says malware analyst Andrey Polovinkin.

Asia-Pacific risk

At present, GoldFactory predominately targets people in the Asia-Pacific region. Police have identified victims in Vietnam and Thailand.

In March of 2023, Thailand’s central bank ordered banks around the nation to comply with new mobile banking security requirements. This involves the use of biometric authentication whenever someone attempts to open a new bank account or attempts to facilitate digital financial transfers of more than 50,000 bhat. GoldPickaxe emerged three months after these security measures were implemented, seemingly in an effort to circumvent them.

Given the ubiquity of facial recognition as an access and security feature across banks, both in Asia and elsewhere, the malware threatens to become a global menace. GoldPickaxe-like malware could be adopted by other threat groups and/or incorporated into existing malware strains.

GoldPickaxe is available for both Android and iOS, which is extremely rare. In general, Apple iOS blocks the installation of unapproved apps.

In this case, attackers attempt to socially engineer victims into installing the malware — either via Apple’s online TestFlight service (for app beta-testing) or by allowing a device to be enrolled in an attacker-controlled mobile device management program.

Why this malware is effective

This malware is effective for two reasons: The first is that deepfake technology is now more sophisticated, it’s “smarter,” than biometric authentication mechanisms.

Facial recognition systems that don’t use 3D data are relatively easy to bypass using images.

The second is that the vast majority of security professionals, product developers and the general public lack awareness of the fact that deepfakes can fool biometrics-based systems.

Deepfake Technology Powers Advanced Malware Attacks on Mobile Banking

  Identification of Cyber Threat Actor GoldFactory and its Advanced Banking Trojans

  GoldFactory, a cybercrime group that communicates in Chinese, has been identified as the creators of advanced banking trojans. This includes a previously unknown iOS malware named GoldPickaxe, which is designed to collect identity documents, facial recognition data, and intercept SMS messages. According to a detailed report by Group-IB, a Singapore-based cybersecurity firm, the GoldPickaxe family of malware is operational on both iOS and Android platforms. It is believed that GoldFactory maintains strong ties with Gigabud, another cybercrime organization.

  Since its inception in mid-2023, GoldFactory has been linked to the creation of other Android-based banking malware. These include GoldDigger and its advanced version GoldDiggerPlus, which incorporates an embedded trojan known as GoldKefu.

  Targeted Social Engineering Campaigns in Asia-Pacific

  The malware created by GoldFactory has been distributed through social engineering campaigns, primarily aimed at the Asia-Pacific region. Thailand and Vietnam have been specifically targeted, with the malware disguising itself as local banks and government organizations. In these campaigns, potential victims receive phishing and smishing messages that direct them to switch to instant messaging applications like LINE. They are then sent fraudulent URLs that install GoldPickaxe on their devices.

  Some of the malicious Android applications are hosted on fake websites designed to mimic the Google Play Store or corporate websites, thus facilitating the installation process.

  iOS Distribution Scheme and Sophisticated Evasion Techniques

  The iOS version of GoldPickaxe utilizes a different distribution method. It employs successive versions that take advantage of Apple’s TestFlight platform and malicious URLs. These URLs prompt users to download a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile, which provides complete control over the iOS device and enables the installation of the rogue app.

  The Thailand Banking Sector CERT (TB-CERT) and the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) uncovered these propagation techniques in November 2023.

  GoldPickaxe also showcases its sophistication by circumventing security measures implemented by Thailand. These measures necessitate users to verify large transactions using facial recognition to deter fraudulent activities.

  Deepfake Videos and Unauthorized Fund Transfers

  Security researchers Andrey Polovinkin and Sharmine Low explain that GoldPickaxe tricks victims into recording a video as a confirmation method in the fake application. This recorded video is then utilized as a source for creating deepfake videos using face-swapping artificial intelligence services.

  Both the Android and iOS versions of the malware are capable of collecting victims’ ID documents and photos, intercepting incoming SMS messages, and routing traffic through the compromised device. It is believed that GoldFactory actors use their own devices to log into the banking application and execute unauthorized fund transfers.

  Comparing the Functionality of iOS and Android Variants

  The iOS variant of GoldPickaxe has fewer functionalities compared to its Android counterpart. This is largely due to the closed nature of the iOS operating system and its relatively stricter permissions.

  The Android version, considered an evolved version of GoldDiggerPlus, disguises itself as over 20 different applications from Thailand’s government, financial sector, and utility companies. Its main aim is to steal login credentials from these services. However, the exact use of this stolen information by the threat actors remains unclear.

  Abuse of Android’s Accessibility Services and Code-Level Similarities

  A noteworthy feature of the malware is its exploitation of Android’s accessibility services to log keystrokes and extract content displayed on the screen.

  GoldDigger shares code-level similarities with GoldPickaxe, although it is primarily designed to steal banking credentials, while GoldPickaxe is more focused on collecting personal information from victims. To date, no GoldDigger artifacts aimed at iOS devices have been discovered.

  Targeting Vietnamese Financial Companies

  Unveiling the GoldDigger Malware and its Evolution

  GoldDigger, a base version of a malicious software, was first identified in June 2023. Even though it continues to circulate in the digital space, it has given rise to more advanced versions, including GoldDiggerPlus. This upgraded variant is embedded with an additional Trojan APK component known as GoldKefu, which triggers the malicious activities.

  Introduction to GoldDiggerPlus and GoldKefu

  GoldDiggerPlus made its first appearance in September 2023. GoldKefu, on the other hand, masquerades as a widely used Vietnamese messaging application to extract banking information from ten different financial institutions. Unlike GoldDigger, which primarily relies on Android’s accessibility services, the Android Trojan, used in combination with GoldKefu, leverages fake overlays to gather login details if the most recently opened application is on the target list.

  GoldKefu’s Integration with Agora SDK

  GoldKefu also collaborates with the Agora Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable interactive voice and video calls. It deceives victims into reaching out to a fake bank customer service by sending counterfeit alerts. These alerts create an artificial urgency by falsely claiming that a fund transfer of 3 million Thai Baht has occurred in their accounts.

  The Lucrative Mobile Malware Landscape

  This development is indicative of the mobile malware landscape’s lucrative nature for cybercriminals seeking quick financial gain. These criminals continuously devise methods to bypass the defensive strategies implemented by banks to combat such threats. It also highlights the continuously evolving and dynamic nature of social engineering schemes designed to deliver malware to victims’ devices.

  Mitigating Risks Posed

  To reduce the risks posed by GoldFactory and its mobile banking malware suite, it is strongly recommended to avoid clicking on suspicious links and installing apps from untrusted sites. These sites are a common source of malware. Regularly reviewing the permissions granted to apps, especially those that request Android’s accessibility services, is also advised.

  The Resourcefulness of the GoldFactory Team

  The GoldFactory team is skilled in various tactics, including impersonation, accessibility keylogging, creating fake banking websites, sending fake bank alerts, creating fake call screens, and collecting identity and facial recognition data. The team is divided into separate development and operator groups, each dedicated to specific regions.

  The Operational Maturity of the Gang

  The gang has well-established processes and operational maturity. They continuously enhance their toolkit to match the targeted environment, demonstrating a high level of expertise in malware development.

Microsoft planning mobile app store launch, says Phil Spencer

Microsoft is planning to launch its own app store for games across mobile devices, according to Phil Spencer.

In March 2024 new rules are expected under the EU's Digital Markets Act, which will require Apple and Google to open their mobile platforms to app stores owned and operated by other companies.

Microsoft aims to capitalise on this with its own Xbox platform, for which its proposed purchase of Activision Blizzard is a key element.

EU delays Activision Blizzard decision as Microsoft offers further remedies

EU regulators have delayed a decision on Microsoft's proposed $69BN acquisition of Activision Blizzard after the company submitted remedies in its efforts gain approval.

The European Commission had previously announced a provisional deadline of 25th April for its decision on the controversial takeover, but, as reported by Reuters, that has now shifted to 22nd May as its reviews Microsoft's latest submissions.

Details of these remedies have not been made public, as per EU policy, but it's likely these relate to a flurry of recent deals Microsoft has signed in a bid to be seen as willing to bring Call of Duty - a particular sticking point for regulators in the EU, US, and UK - to competing services.

Netflix says it has 40 more game releases lined up for 2023

The company began offering Netflix subscribers access to a library of mobile games through the Android and iOS versions of its app in late 2021.

In an update on Monday, Netflix said it currently has 16 first-party games in development and a further 70 in the works with third-party studios.

“This year we’re going to continue building our portfolio — and that means new games every month,” Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s vice president of external games, wrote in a blog.

Dying Light Developer Techland shares a teaser of its upcoming ‘story-focused AAA title’

Dying Light studio Techland has published a teaser for its next project. Though still unnamed, the new fantasy title got a slice of concept art today.

On Twitter, Techland shared the art of its newest game. It’s set to be a narrative-driven fantasy epic, with an “exotic open world” to explore.

“We strive to create a compelling story-focused AAA title that combines and refines the best aspects of gameplay that Techland is known for,” reads the post.

Former Criterion leaders set-up new AAA games studio Fuse Games

The veterans who left Need for Speed developer Criterion in December last year have reunited to form a new AAA studio: Fuse Games.

The new outfit has been founded by studio general manager Matt Webster, head of content Steve Uphill, head of production Pete Lake, head of technology Andrei Shires, and head of operations Alan McDairmant.

The team is in the process of finding an office in Guildford, and will adopt a hybrid working approach. Its first game will be a AAA console and PC release, and when asked if it'll match the games Criterion is famous for – racing titles such as Burnout and Need for Speed – Webster isn't giving anything away.

"Even our recent history spans a few things," Webster reminds us. "Obviously arcade racers and open world racers are what we know very deeply. But we have played around in other genres over the years, including Battlefront, Battlefield… VR. We know what we are good at, and that spans a broad range of things now. Once we select our genre, we want to lead that genre."

Royal Match developer Dream Games opens new office in London

Istanbul-based mobile developer Dream Games has opened its first overseas office in London.

The company is best known for its casual game Royal Match, which launched three years ago and has since become a regular Top Three highest-grossing game in the UK and US.

Dream Games also reports it has been valued at $2.75 billion.

The developer has also made two key new hires, with both recruits operating out of the new London office.

King's global head of marketing Richard Hocking leaves to join Dream Games as its first chief marketing officer.

IO Interactive opens new studio in Istanbul

IO Interactive has announced it has opened a fourth studio, with the newest branch based in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The company revealed the new studio via its website, describing it as a "crucial part in the continued growth and success of IO Interactive."

IOI Istanbul is located in the Maslak area of the city's Sariyer district, alongside several other tech businesses.

It hopes to "[establish] a foothold for AAA development in Turkey" and the team there will "play a significant role" on all IOI productions.

Metaintervención de ‘Si Vas Para Chiste’, pieza a incluir en el trabajo “Especial Dieciochero con los The Ramones” del dúo Chiste (Mika Martini – Daniel Jeffs) que, finalmente, quedó inédito. Esta última toma una versión de “Si Vas Para Chile”, interpretada por Pedro Messone e incluida en un vinilo promocional del sello ALBA, intervenido manualmente y en tiempo real por el Mika y el Djef, publicado en el disco “Transmissão/Transmission” (Antena Netlabel, Brasil, 2005)
