The wind ruffled the ragged yellow cape tied to Izuku’s back; the dirt and blood covered fabric billowed in the wind like a ripped flag. Sirens screamed in the late hour, the red lights painting the buildings in a sinister glow, highlighting the war-torn streets. From his position atop of a nearly crumbling building, Izuku couldn’t see anyone. That didn’t mean that he wasn’t aware of every moment near him.
Danger sense was truly a gift that the newly dubbed hero was extremely grateful for. Rounding up the villains that had escaped from Tartarus was exhausting- interrogating them for information on All for One was even more tiring. It was nice to have a moment in between to try and relax, and Danger Sense allowed him that short reprieve. Izuku was most definitely aware that he probably would’ve keeled over in the first week of this solo journey had it not been for the gifts from the vestiges. It was a comfort knowing that they were watching his back, at least most of them.
He hadn’t been introduced to the second or third users yet, and he had to admit that it stung. He had caught glimpses, of course, but that was nothing compared to what he had seen of Daigoro or Nana, or even En. Izuku had gotten to know his predecessors, through their quirks, through their limited knowledge of the world as they knew it so long ago. But the second and third users seemed to avoid him at every turn. First says that he shouldn’t worry, that they’d come around when he needed them the most- but it was a worry that would not leave the back of Izuku’s mind.
Izuku was no stranger to having those in his life who despised him for reasons beyond what he could control. Being quirkless a majority of his life made sure of that- if it wasn’t a random stranger spitting down at him, there was Kacchan and his lackeys. Izuku liked to believe that he and Kacchan were making progress, but it doesn’t erase what he did for all those years. Then, Izuku made it to Yuuei. He made friends. True friends who cared so deeply, and loved so hard. It was a comfort he wasn’t aware could be so life-changing. But even at Yuuei he couldn’t make people happy- Shinsou and Monoma despised him for having such a powerful quirk. It wasn’t like he could tell them back then, what it had really been like.
He wonders how the two of them reacted to learning of his past.
But, it wasn’t like he expected everything to be perfect at Yuuei. People pleaser as Izuku is, he is aware that you can’t make everyone happy. But the vestiges, even before Izuku knew what they were- they were supposed to be different. The souls of heroes past, those who sacrificed their lives in battle against All for One, they were supposed to accept him wholeheartedly. Izuku wasn’t naive enough as to think they would approve of every action, but he figured they would all at least help him. After all, wasn’t he one of them?
The green haired vigilante sighed, flipping his cowl behind his head as he took out his phone. It was cracked badly- and to his credit most of the damage took place before Shigaraki succeeded at his prison bust. The screen lit up the darkness surrounding him, just dim enough as to not draw attention. A few text notifications had been sent through, mostly from his former classmates. Two from All Might, checking in and making sure he was taking care of himself, one from Endeavor, stating there weren’t any updates on his end, and one from Aizawa. Izuku’s green eyes widened in shock- last he heard his teacher was still in the hospital.
With a shaky and hesitant finger, he swiped on the screen to bring up the text. It was simple, in true Aizawa fashion.

all might tells me you’ve been on your own for a few weeks now. can’t say i agree with your decision making. you better be taking care of yourself, problem child.
Izuku heaved a sullen sigh, thinking for a moment before typing a response.

from what i hear, you need more help than me, sensei. i’ll be okay. i promise.
Swiping away from his messages with Aizawa, Izuku begins to look at the others. He didn’t dare open a majority of them- he knew that he’d quickly lose his resolve and go back to the comfort of Yuuei. It wasn’t that surprising Kacchan hadn’t tried to message him- he was either too pissed or he understood Izuku was too stubborn to listen. Probably both. There were a few from Uraraka, a few from Tsu, a few from Kirishima, and a couple dozen from Iida.
What made Izuku stop, however, was the single message from Todoroki. He wasn’t sure if his friend would send him anything. In fact, he had assumed that Todoroki would forgo sending a message and instead try to follow him. Despite being friends with Uraraka and Iida from the very beginning of the year, Shoto was who he was closest to. Shoto was who he felt the most comfortable with, and leaving Shoto hurt more than leaving anyone else, save his mom.
Blinking back tears, and with a twinge of regret seeping into his heart, Izuku opened the message.

midoriya, i’m not sure if you’ll read this. i’m not even sure if you have your phone on you anymore, or if you’ve blocked out numbers. i don’t know if sending this is worth it, but i know that i’ll hate myself if i don’t try. i didn’t smile before you wormed your way into my life. you broke down walls that i spent years building up in just a few weeks and you made me feel like i could finally breathe. without you, i would be half of a shell, not living or feeling anything. so, this is my attempt at being you. i don’t judge you for hiding anything regarding your quirk, and i cannot possibly imagine what you went through before receiving it. but you’re not alone now. you have uraraka and iida. you have me. and if you can’t find the strength to breathe, i’ll be there to remind you, just like you did for me. the scourge of kamino cannot defeat us all. so please, come back home.
Izuku couldn’t stop the tears from flowing, even if he tried. The droplets fell from his cheeks onto the cracked cement edge of the ledge he was sitting on. The screen faded to black, showing a reflection of a grimy, bloody, crying mess. His phone fell from his grasp, clamoring onto the roof as his hands gripped onto his knees. Shaking, he felt the warmth of One for All pass through his body. Comfort raced through his bones as he tried to grab onto reality.
Oh, how Izuku wished he could go back. He desperately wanted to see his friends smiling faces, to see the light behind their eyes once more. To see Ochako gasp in delight when he randomly gets her mochi, to do his daily runs with Iida, to just bask in the warmth that was spending time with Todoroki. But he couldn’t. It wasn’t possible, and they all needed to understand. He couldn’t go back until All for One was defeated. And what made it worse was the fact that he was fairly certain he wouldn’t make it back from that fight.
He was the last wielder of One for All. It was his destiny, his fate, to end the tyranny of All for One. Even if it resulted in his death. As long as his friends could smile in safety once more, he didn’t care.
Sullen, green eyes stared up at the stars above, ignoring the sirens below. Constellations he used to be able to find easily seemed to fizzle out, becoming muddled and hard to find. Izuku closed his eyes, letting the harsh wind dry his tears. The pain was a small comfort. It would all be worth it in the end.
A soft ping sounded from beside, and Izuku slowly opened his eyes to look at his phone. It lit up, showcasing a photo of Izuku and Shoto at the Cultural Festival, smiling and looking happy as can be. Soon after, a new message from Endeavor appeared, and Izuku scrambled to pick it up and read it.

there’s been sightings of a woman matching lady nagant’s description heading towards your area. be on guard. call us the moment you make contact with any villain.
Izuku sighed once more, standing up straight on the ledge and pocketing his phone. Gran Torino’s cape flew behind him, and One for All lit up through his veins. He nodded, subtle but sure, and threw his cowl back over his head. With a silent call to Daigoro, black whip sprung to life, and Izuku jumped from the building. It was time to be a hero.
He just hoped it would all be worth it in the end.
