On the one hand, being in diaspora, being of the diaspora, being the product of generations in diaspora, has completely shaped my me and how I relate to the world, and I wouldn't trade it. In fact, it's something I celebrate. It's a huge part of my personal identity and the identity of my community.

On the other hand, sometimes it's just so horribly hard. Sometimes I just want roots. And sometimes I feel the severance, a violent chopped off-ness from homeland.

And then because I actually do have roots, but maybe aerial roots that strain and reach towards that home, I feel strained and twisted along with them. My homeland is messed up and my immediate family is here, not there, and my closest loved ones are here, not there, but what would it be like to be messed up on earth you came from, at least?

Personally, it's always a bit wild to me to see commentators interact with the Hunger Games franchise as if Collins were writing science fiction stories instead of essays with faces. She's just not that interested in fleshing out side characters or digging into the details of the worldbuilding. These characters are concepts and symbols before they're people. There's an almost mathematical precision to who and what she explores and how deeply she does it. This is a step or two away from pure allegory. If she were writing a couple of centuries ago, she'd have named her characters things like Innocence and Anger and Watch-Carefully-Your-Soul-Lest-Ye-Be-Damned, but since she's writing for modern audiences, she has to settle for puns and allusions. If she has another essay to write, she'll assign some faces to it; she's not going to look into backstories or other eras just for the sake of storytelling, and it's not a failing as a writer that she doesn't.

yay! I drew these quite literally three years ago. dragonheart!milo and raihan! a knight on a doomed dragon hunt being lifted out of his station by a small village medicine man. together they become magic lawyers and overthrow the government

the main details in these do survive into the iterations I’ve drawn (instead of these actual designs I spent time to make el oh el): the “leaf” diamond quilt/gambeson and the plaited coattail for milo, the “atypical” weapons, long coat, and large number of scattered fake gold trims and accessories for raihan. I think I lost raihan the hat and added a cape for milo further down the line because like this their general silhouettes are too similar for my liking lol
