THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES FANDOM SURVEY

Hi hello there! I am running a survey to see what popular headcannons/characters/opinions/just-alot-of-stuff are in the Magnus Archives  fandom!

In my head, you’re a Magnus Archives blog. I mean, I know you obviously listen to other things, but In my mind it’s things like Welcome to Nightvale, Malevolent, Hello from the Hallowoods, The Sheridan Tapes, things like that, horror and supernatural.

So I had to do a double-take when I saw a Dungeons and Daddies post from you, I really didn’t know you listened to it. Then I see you reblog a Fawx and Stallion post, and now I’m just wondering how many podcasts you’ve listened to that I’ve also listened to.

Hahaha yes this blog has been mainly for tma stuff for years now, I still feel like I'm new to the fandom but honestly I've been here through a lot of it since the beginning of season 5

Buuuuut in the past few months I've stopped going into the tma tag regularly and been feeling a little detached from it, at least as opposed to before. My listen to tmagp has been way less interactive and I hardly reblog content anymore (which is something I like doing but because of various bad experiences on the internet recently I have yet to recover from I feel safer posting my own original posts rather than reblogging)

And that freed up a space in my mind to realize I've actually been listening to a lot of podcasts besides tma and it's honestly a shame not to talk about them more with others

I do listen to a lot of horror fantasy supernatural and science fiction podcasts! I also love a lot of dnd and ttrpg podcasts, I also love everything dropout and wish I could get into critical role but it's so big I don't think I'll manage it

Okay so going along with the whole chester is jon, norris is martin, and augustus is jonah theory ive seen a lot of people talk/make jokes about how norris' cases have themes of love and loss and whatever and how chester's are just "get the FUCK away from the Magnus Institute".

Which i personally interpreted as martin warning the oira employees of what theyll lose if they get into this stuff and jon (especially taking personal screening into consideration) going full stop "fuck off. You have the option to quit so do it and get a normal job" aka trying to tell them to just not get involved

Augustus on the other hand, his only case pretty closely resembled the style of the original statements in tma

My thought is that jonah is trying to figure out whos been marked by what fear already and that his goal is to make another archivist and achieve another watchers crown

Tma/tmagp fans: actual friendly request to please tag my Magnus Protocol stuff properly when you reblog it.

I can't and won't stop you from not adding tags/proper tags, but please remember that a lot of people can't listen to the podcast as it comes out, and that timezones are a thing. Not only many Magnus fans have very busy lives, a substantial number of us need to stop and read the transcripts as they listen to the podcast, which usually delays them from catching up with the episodes.

People in a fandom follow each other in good faith, and it may feel disappointing that they blacklist a number of tags not to get spoiled only to have someone who listened to an episode immediately as it came out to post something untagged that ruins their fun. Tagging stuff has become common courtesy on the internet for a reason.

So moving forward, it would be really appreciated if y'all tagged my Magnus Protocol art things from me with at least a "tmp" or "tmagp" tag as to give the fandom a chance to block it if they wish to. Thank you :)

Dead Plate

This one was the easiest I'm going to be honest it's very Flesh coded but also the Desolation. Now I want to go specifically on the part with the Desolation since it's not solely because of the 3rd ending, in fact that was one of the 2nd reasons as why I assigned this fear to the game. The Desolation is the fear of cruelty, pain, and destruction (thank you MAG wiki) which happens a lot to Rody in game (the destruction of his relationship with Manon, the pain Vince inflicted onto both Manon and Rody, plus the cruelty Vince has towards others.)

Cold Front

I actually didn't have much to say on this one on the account of it being pretty difficult to assign any entity other than the Lonely to this game. Obviously the Lonely stands for how the relationship between Augustine and Winnie, because of them being so distant to each other. But the more I thought about it honestly, the Spiral, Web, and Corruption have lil' sprinkles in there. I would go into it more depth but at that point I should make a YouTube video analysis. Also I'm not 100% on the web but it feels like it should be in there because Auggie is like Jon (in season 2) when speculating about people and it's so funny to me. That includes the Corruption but I'm sure on the Spiral because, idk, fits. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Eloquent countenance

Ok now THIS one I'm completely torn upon. I really wanted to say the eye but thats just bc of vibes alone. Actually I think the Web. I could say the Desolation as well but that would match because y'know cult stuff. But the Web just feels, right. Think about it. Angelica is practically fighting over control for her body against a fallen angel. The way Forcas seems to be leading us, despite having good intentions, feels, off. When I first played the game I thought it was going to be a twist that he was luring her into a false sense of security. But he wasn't. He was actually trying to help. And that plus the cultist alone feels like the Web. A never ending fight for control of the strings of a puppet.

I really do like talking about this so if you have any other opinions or ideas, PLEASE reblog or send me an ask :3

hi! this is the bunch-a-questions anon. this wont be an ask ask. thank you for answering! it really gives me so much insight about tools and processes, i really enjoy seeing/reading how different artists have different ways in approaching creation of art. it’s all so interesting to me

and oooh i know what you mean about looking at a lot of different artists! it’s inspiration!! i find those things to be amazing too, it’s so cool. it’s like “this spot is inspired by an artist” “this artist draws this like this, so i wanted to try” “i think the way an artist drew this was neat and i wanted to try an implement it” it reminds me of that one post how we, as people, are a mosiac of other people and i believe it to be the same for how artists are too with their art

i feel inspired by the way you draw….. everything!!! it gets me pumped to try and replicate the way you do some things. like the shapes you create, the colors you choose, the way your lineart seems to be so flowy, how dynamic everything feels and how different each drawing you create is from one another (i saw you reblog that meme of like “why shouldnt i draw characters from the waist up and that is SO me, but it’s shoulders up” because drawing full bodies makes mh drawings feel so stiff, i need to practice more!!), the poses of the characters. just.. every aspect of your art is so, so, so nice!!

the way you draw, in all your styles, it’s definitely one of the ones that is such a good scratch to my brain. it gets me all giddy and happy! i’m not sure if i’ll get into jwri, mostly because my attention span will not let me be able sit and focus on listening before i get distracted and miss context on parts, BUT i still go to your blog almost every day just so i can see your art, no matter what it is, no matter who the characters are because it’s always so so good and i love taking it in. (will eat your art if i could, i am so serious)

its okay if you can't get into jrwi, i get it! i didn't think i would get into it as well and after binging all the episodes i honestly forgot why i even started listening in the first place. remembered recently tho! it was because i was going a little crazy while making the picrew and needed some actual talking in the background instead of just music. so, if you ever decide to give it a try, or listen to something else equally as lengthy, try to busy your hands with something that doesn't require a lot of thinking! it helps me at least! worked both with jrwi and tma. it's like, doing something monotonous (knitting, sorting files, cleaning the house, etc) can be incredibly boring if i sit in silence and let my mind wonder. alternatively, listening to something long or watching a long movie can be incredibly boring as well because i struggle to pay attention to the same thing for two hours. but combining these is really good, because it keeps both my mind and hands busy, but not overwhelmingly so!

hello!!!! I am so normal about the mechanisms (lying) but am not good at describing things so if you want, like, The Intro Post To The Mechs than @x-ca1iber has it and that’s much more fine tuned but I shall try my best! This may be… a bit of an infodump, and not very concise.

base content warnings for mechs, not this post but the mechs as a band and their stories: violence, so much violence, lots of death, war, general tragedy, British people (ew)

okay. So. The basics! The Mechanisms were a 9 person folk cabaret band who told stories in their albums and songs that were based on mythology and stories (more on that later)

Outside of these stories they played individual characters, a space, steampunk pirate crew of immortals roaming the universe aboard a sentient starship named the Aurora and finding tragedies to tell through their albums. They're, as I mentioned, immortal, through a mechanism (not to be confused with The Mechanisms, the name of their crew lol. They weren’t very creative with that) A mechanism is a replacement for a part (or in some cases several parts) of one’s body made of metal and shit, that causes regeneration if you die. And this shit isn’t light, it is totally possible to regen from being, for instance… shoved into a sun for a century. so basically, crew of immortals making stories they witness into albums and playing the roles of people in those stories.

For a fan of tma, the most recognizable part of this is 4 people in the crew (though only 3 are major characters in tma) Jonny Sims, of course, plays Jon in tma and Jonny D’ville (he/him) in the mechanisms. (He is… perhaps not the most creative with naming his character) Jonny D’ville is the first mate (NOT captain. Though he would say he was) of the Aurora, and his mechanism is his heart. He was the first person in the crew, and the first to become immortal. He’s also the lead singer, and plays harmonica. Frank Voss plays Basira in tma, and in the mechs plays Ashes O’Reilly (they/them) an arsonist crime boss, ship’s quartermaster, whose mechanism is their lungs! Jessica Law plays Nikola Orsinov in tma, and in the mechs she plays The Toy Soldier (it/its) The Toy Soldier is… a bit of an outlier, in that it wasn’t ever mechanized, wasn’t ever “made” immortal. It is simply a sentient clockwork toy, with a voice box stolen from a human it had been in love with. (Somehow jess is typecast as an unsettling dollike entity twice in a thing created in part by Jonny sims) Its role in the crew is… really nobody knows. Occasionally it’s called mascot. It’s just kinda there and whenever it’s kicked out it finds its way back. It’s very charming, and simply happy to be involved! last, and kinda least in the context of being a tma fan, is Tim Ledsam, who plays the exterminator Jordan Kennedy in tma and Gunpowder Tim, (he/him) master-at-arms, in the mechanisms. His mechanism is his eyes.

others, who I’m not going to go into detail about, are Nastya Rasputina (she/her) engineer, Ivy Alexandria (she/her, actor uses he/him) archivist, Drumbot Brian (he/him) pilot, Marius Von Raum (he/him, actor uses they/them) and Raphaella la cognizi (she/her)

two, the albums! This is gonna be pretty quick because it’s just an overview, but there are 4 main story albums that tell self contained stories, 2 that are a collection of songs that tell single stories, and 1 EP thing that tells its own little ballad. Then there’s a live recorded version of their final show ever, death to the mechanisms. They’re all very tragic, and *very* queer stories.

first, once upon a time (in space) a story based on fairy tales, tells the story of a war through the stars. second, Ulysses dies at dawn, a film noir style telling of a dystopian world based on Greek myths. third, high noon over Camelot, a cowboy western ballad about Arthurian legend on a space station. fourth, the bifrost incident, a rock ballad about Norse myth, lovecraft eldritch horror, and one person being really fucking horny for a train (Dw about it) the other albums are a mix of myth and story retellings (Frankenstein, the story of Prometheus, a rhythm based video game called crypt of the necrodancer) and character backstory songs for the Mechanisms.

random ass fun facts because I’m out of base info and I think the mechs is really funny for something supposed to be tragedy

-one of the crew, Nastya, is in a loving romantic and sexual relationship with the starship

-there are creatures called octokittens that are half octopus half kitten. I love them.

-Jonny is Texan. Yeah. (Well technically New Texan, because he was born on a planet called New Texas, but whatever)

-I’m not going into this because it’s more complex lore but the person who “created” most of the mechanisms was a vampire named Doctor Carmilla and was a (very disfunctuonal) mother figure to at least most of the crew. They kicked her out

-Doctor Baron Marius Von Raum, one of the other crewmates, is neither a doctor nor a baron. His real name is Byron. He psychoanalizes people for fun.

-they’re all horrible people, the Mechanisms. They kill and burn and destroy and manipulate unrepentantly and take pride in breaking every law they can find (though we have explicit canon confirmation that Jonny flat out refuses to commit any sexual crimes) It makes them fun, though

-there are *so* many photos of the bandmates in character and a good part of fandom activity is just passing around those photos within the fandom like they’re Pokémon cards

-last, and very much not least, it’s quite important to note that Jonny Sims didn’t “create” the mechanisms, not like he did tma. It’s a collaboration between a bunch of great storytellers and musicians that started out as a uni band

with these two pages, highlight in one color Things You Fear, and in another color Things You Embrace Or Romanticize. neither category of Opinion is limited to one page- go ahead and mark stuff you like on the fears page and vice versa!

then, look for where you have the most overlap, where both Fear and Intrigue occurs in the same FearType.

if you have only fears in a Type across both pages, that means you're Targeted. if you have some mix of fear and interest, but not much, that might mean you've been Marked.

i don’t really like the use of tme/tma and agab (when they aren’t necessary - sometimes they are though and that’s totally valid!!!) as i feel like it just divides the trans community more than helping it because experiences are very complex and putting them into these kinds of boxes is just .,,, unhelpful. i also really dislike people who claim that transandrophobia isnt a thing!! just say u hate transmascs and leave because i do not want u here!! or please learn and grow as a person and unlearn ideas that are hurtful to others, thanks :D talk to ppl outside your perspective and you may find that what you thought was morally correct was mistaken- and there's genuinely no shame in admitting that!! with that being said i am of course also open to considering other perspectives as long as they're reasonable ^-^
