Actually, Faramir and Boromir both have daddy issues. The difference is that Faramir's daddy issues are about his actual dad, whereas Boromir's daddy issues are about a guy his dad's age who looks the same age as him, and who probably maybe held him once or twice as a baby

I love how, over the course of LOTR, Aragorn just amasses a little army of guys with daddy/mommy issues. 

You’ve got Frodo, an orphan. You’ve got Faramir, whose father tried to kill him, and Boromir, whose father thought he shat gold and put him on an impossible pedestal his whole life. Then there’s Eomer and Eowyn, who are also orphans and have the added strife of Theoden’s corruption and death. Legolas’s mother may or may not be dead, and his father has Problems in the movieverse, and even in the book-verse he’s going through a lot and may not have the time to give Legolas the attention he needs. Gimli, Merry and Pippin all have high-ranking influential fathers that they’re trying hard to succeed, and while that’s not as bad as dead dad or abusive dad or both, it still has to impact the psyche somehow.

Every once in a while I think about how the love and iconic status the PJ LotR movies receive has so little to do with its value as an adaptation. People love it for the music, the visuals, the love and care put into costumes and props, the enthusiasm and talent of the cast and how they contributed to enrich the production... but you don't really hear people talking about how good the writing or the editing is. About 95% of all modifications, cuts, and additions done to the source material are not good (I'd argue that the writing of Boromir, specially in FotR is good... the addition of some of the Arwen and Aragorn plot... Mmmm... Sam's speech in Osgiliath? yeah, I think that's it); Denethor the cartoon villain? Legolas the OP? Gilmli the gross comic relief baffoon? Daddy issues Faramir? Frodo the fainting damsel? The fakeout death of Aragorn in TTT? All downgrades to the original story. Because the writing of this movies time and time again misses the points of the works it is adapting. It glorifies war. It sacrifices characterization to cliches (we need comic relief idiots, we need a big hero protagonist that is always right and never wrong and nobody is at his level (Aragorn), we need an everyman character and his friends to be all apparently 20somethings because that's the age characters in fantasy are, we need more tension, more, MORE, we need the threat to be constant and infallible and unavoidable...).

The writing of the LotR movie trilogy, on what it has of original, is mostly bad. Everything else is just so so so good.

Hi anon - this one likely won't be written for ages yet, I'd be happy to <3

So it's a very amorphous idea (like my Filles du roi AU) because I want to reread the books front to back before touching the project. But the ghist of it is that it'd be a mythological retelling of Campaign 1 with a similar framework to LOTR - a book built from the accounts of a few characters and them getting accounts from their friends / likely flat-out imagining some shit (hard to get a Sauron POV), written in prose of Tolkien's style. Characters will sing beautiful songs mid-battle, the hearts of men and their like are fundamentally good, and etc.

Here's the thing: Scanlan is the primary author, here, so he deliberately exaggerated and switched up a lot for the sake of the story. It might actually follow TLOVM's plot more closely than canon, because it already does a lot of the streamlining he would want to do.

I figure he only publishes this in his old age - when only he, Keyleth and Pike are left - and the girls both think the rest of the party would be delighted by this story so they don't go out of their way to correct it. Also Scanlan clearly worked hard on it with all the prose, illustrations, poetry and songs - it's a love letter to Vox Machina. (Some sections are from Vex when she was still around, with notes she got from Percy's journals. Tbh half the poetry is his, and all the Celestial.) There are also probably contributions (coughcorrectionscough) by Keyleth and Pike.

BUT ENOUGH WITH THE SAD SHIT

The main problem would be finding the right balance of LOTR elements and nailing the writing style. But I'm excited!

My thoughts so far include:

Given this is Scanlan writing this story, he and Pike are the main characters, taking up elements of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin. Making them get separated and be present for the reclaiming of Whitestone (battle of Pelennor Fields, Merry & Pip) and their bond being pivotal to defeating the dark lord (Frodo and Sam. Pike doing the 'but I can carry you' thing <33)

Percy just... is Aragorn. It's stupid perfect for him: heir to an empire fallen from grace heavily associated with white and trees, hello?? Except all his names are part of his full name, not a host of aliases and titles.

Vex would likely be a combination of Faramir (ranger of Gondor, daddy issues galore) and Éowyn (I AM NO MAN, close friendship to one of the hobbits/gnomes, Trinket could be her horse). Both of them have a close bond with a brother that makes things absolutely heartbreaking. Except given she’s both Faramir and Éowyn she gets to smooch Percy-Aragorn, and their roles in the House of Healing are swapped (true love's crit).

Vax would likewise steal elements from Frodo (tragic bearer of the burden, cannot really go home) and Boromir :)

Keyleth and Grog neatly slot in with Percy as the Three Hunters. Grog and Percy n Kiki and Grog friendship time <33

Scanlan compresses the timeline so multiple great forces of evil act at the same time. Vecna is obviously Sauronlike, with a great evil land of evil. Undecided if the Briarwoods are Saruman (manipulation, sorta serve the great evil for their purposes) or Denethor (stewards of the white city, motivated by despair and in a twisted way love). Conclave could be akin to the Nazgul, or Saruman (Raishan namely, plus Saruman of the Many Colors = Chroma Conclave).

Look getting the balance Right between LOTR and CR and TLOVM is gonna be a bitch is what I'm saying, but taking some elements from LOTR would make it more fun.

Anyways apparently the theatrical edition doesn't include Éomer's cry of agony when he finds Éowyn on the battlefield???? Or Pippin looking for Merry amidst the corpses long after dark? I only ever watch the Extended Edition so im Heartbroken :c

Favorite lotr character(s) and why?

That’s such a good question! I honestly love all of them so much (well, except maybe Sauron). I love Sam, as we all do for obvious reasons, but also Frodo for being so underrated in his resilience and selflessness (despite being the main character). Gollum is a very interesting character in his own right, though perhaps not as likeable. I think Aragorn is a great male role model, Eowyn a great female role model, Boromir a great (and understandable, maybe even relatable) cautionary tale, but my all time favourite is actually Faramir. He’s so soft but also so brave - two traits that aren’t posed as mutually exclusive - and I’m just a sucker for any character with daddy issues. And he’s into strong women, so that’s a plus hehe

Ufffff since ep 7 I haven't written an opinion and it's not hard to explain why, there was just nothing worth talking about, until now, ep 12... ehhh I felt like the plot of the episode was like a truck driving over me, I mean was I the only one who felt they crammed the plot of 12 episodes into one? Can you believe we had to endure Koori's stupid dance in order to get this far?

There were too many emotions... starting with Erika's father, I have my daddy issues... to say that I start crying like a baby watching Taken (because I think my father would never rescue me) Idk where to start with Charles... everything that happened since from one second to another nobody remembers his daughter, until now that I get the impression that Charles doesn't care much about Erika anymore (even more after noticing how indoctrinated the eldaryans have her) is this woman still his little daughter? I feel he might doubt it

I feel Erika is in denial in many ways or straight up blind... they talk about "stopping a war" but the truth is the war started long ago, just like in TO, Erika just showed up in the middle of the conflict, that is humans dying in Eldarya and Faeries dying on earth, spies and soldiers being sent from one world to the other, at least for me that's a war. I think the time will come when Erika will have to assume that her father will probably die (maybe she will have to do something about it herself) because Charles knows too much and he’s also brilliant (which makes him very dangerous), I almost died when he makes her notice Nevra and Lance's attitudes, when he tells her that they are always between her and the others, I feel that is Charles saying that this girl is not his little girl anymore. The whole two world girl thing got way out of hand...I mean when it all blows up what is Erika's place? Will the faeries want her when they find out her own father is the big villain? Will the humans want her after she sided with their enemies? Things as always look very bad for Erika, I feel she’s going straight to the gallows, I also think Charles will have no scruples or limits regarding what he may be willing to do for Erika, I think he is capable of locking her up and telling her he will leave her there until everything passes.

But well... enough daddy issues... let's move on to the guys, for those who don't know I'm Leiftan's simp, I love him with all my heart and the scene where they take him away (I missed a bit in the writing.... but it was great) I loved the image and the effectiveness of the templar agents, the guys don't mess around, they know that the faeries can have powers and strength above anything known to humans, so boom no risk, at the first time they fill them with sedatives (I think this is absolutely brilliant) with that strategy it doesn't matter if you are a vampire, a dragon or an aengel.

And it is at the moment of the kidnapping when again I remember Charles' words regarding Nevra and Lance, they are there to get answers and it is too noticeable that Erika is their second mission, they could have protected Huang Chu, since she is the one who must make the portal, but no, the two stronger ones grab Erika to keep her safe (I can't help thinking of Boromir holding Frodo so he doesn't try to save Gandalf), at Erika's house again her father gets all the applause, with his DiCaprio-worthy acting skills he feigns surprise and offers them his "help", we get to my favorite scene, bedtime and Erika tells her father that the 3 of them will occupy her room, which seems right to me if they are on a dangerous mission in another world or in any kind of emergency, if there is a tornado, a hurricane, a zombie or alien invasion, STAY IN THE SAME ROOM AS YOUR FAMILY, it's basic survival in disaster and horror movies, whoever is left alone, dies. It is at this impromptu sleepover that my heart once again cringed. One of the things I enjoyed most in TO was that even though Leiftan is the love of my life, Nevra, Valky and Ez were my family... I was a poor little orphan in an unknown world and those 3 made a niche for me, Nevra took care of me like a sister, the same Valkyon and even Ezarel who I am not particularly fond of, became my friend, it hurt me deeply to lose them because they were my family.... in the Guard of Eel there was a companionship that made me want to be part of them, when I woke up years later in ANE it was obvious to me that the love and affection that all the members of the Guard had for each other had disappeared, I did not see the team as before, I did not see that concern and that harmony that in the first season made me fall in love, I mean, Nevra and Lance always seem to agree, but it is not Nevra and Ezarel or Nevra and Valkyon, they are just two work colleagues... It was only in my room on earth, alone and scared that I felt that companionship again, that genuine love/friendship, I love the option of being able to sleep between the two because not only is it a perfect strategy in case of unforeseen events, but I feel that kind of relationship is being forged again, during ANE I lost all group illus because I have no good Lov with Lance, I had no intention to talk to him and the forced interactions between the two don't help to surface friendship.... until now, because even if I don't like him I couldn't just stay with Nevra and send Lance to another room, because it's dangerous, even though I probably would have slept glued to Nevra and not to him.

Erika telling them that she is with Leiftan, at first it seemed weird to me, like out of place, but then I understood that what she really meant was, I care about Huang Chu and Mathieu, but I am dying inside thinking about Leiftan.... actually I would have had a panic attack because I've been through similar situations (of not knowing what's going on with someone you care about) and I collapse very quickly, that anguish for Leiftan was very palpable during the episode, I could feel it in my stomach (which I really liked), I just hope nobody did anything to my baby Lei because for him I burned the whole place down.

Regarding the ending, from the first moment it was evident that Charles will not allow us to leave, in fact when he talks to Erika I felt in Avatar when Jake Sully almost unintentionally gives the information to the general so they can exterminate the Na'vi, both Charles and Huang Hua are already fighting a war only that our favorite goofball has not realized it, everyone knows she knows nothing that's why they manipulate her, because she is goofy and why scare the goofball, better make her think she has everything under control. Erika has to open her eyes, it will be painful but she can't continue being the dumb girl of two worlds, it's not funny anymore, it's pathetic. I hope the torture basement was enough to make her react.

I don't want to speculate into the future.... but since everyone is throwing their theories about who is in the cage I don't want to stay behind, I rule out Miiko from the beginning because it would infuriate me to know that a princess disappeared and no one knew or did anything, I also don't think it's Ezarel because I have a feeling that this cage character won't have a happy ending (and I would hate it if it was Ezarel), so there's nothing left but Kero (even though there are a lot of TO characters that could be) I believe it because they named unicorns several times (along with vampires and brownies, but what other vampires and brownies do we know? ), the fact that Kero "never communicated with the Guard again" and that it was Kero who told us about the templars in TO, I feel like that's a lot of hints in that direction.

About the illustrations... I have nothing positive, the Leiftan one is dramatic but I can't stand to see their bodies and faces... in the others it's even worse ugh I really find them very ugly, episodes 10 and 11 had beautiful illustrations, even the Valentine's Day event (I skip Easter because I didn't like it) so... Were 10 and 11 the exception? Or will 13 confirm that they improved with the illustrations?

Oh one last detail, I like when the routes go different ways, that Leiftan and Mathieu have been kidnapped while Nevra and Lance have not, it gives for many different scenarios and I like that a lot, although I know very well that means more work when making the episode, what I try to say is that not everything is complaints, I appreciate a lot the development of this episode, we had a lot of plot, a lot of drama, new scenarios, moments attempts in many ways, for me at least is the best episode of ANE (that's why the *too much text intensified*).

Thank you for defending Boromir lol. People shit on that boy way too much. He's a good dude and also Lament for Boromir is low key one of the best poems/songs in The Lord of the Rings. Also I totally agree that the extended edition Boromir is significantly better than non extended like it's a completely different character. (also side note rip Faramir who got did so dirty in the movies lol)

Zuko’s redemption arc follows a clear path, thats established WITHIN THE FIRST EPISODE, and we know he has conflict and daddy issues, and anger but heres the thing

He just wants to earn his dad’s love again and Fire nation propaganda had him so messed up he didn’t see how much his uncle loved him for his compassion and the goodness that he had. Like this will probably end up being a 3+ long rambling post about how much I love his arc like the boromir one but thats later

and like what kind of redemption did Kylo Ren or Ben Solo or whatever the hell you want to call him have?

He tries to mind hack a young woman WITHOUT her concent? and thats supposed to be romantic?? He kills his father? He tries to kill his uncle (though that one is slightly understandable though he does go overboard)- and almost takes part in the death of his mother? Some how he falls in love with a girl he barely knows and apparently that redeems him? She asked him to put a shirt on because she was uncomfortable- thats not love THATS DISCOMFORT

Someone try to explain Kylo’s arc without the supposed romance- BECAUSE REDEMPTION SHOULDN’T BE BASED IN ROMANCE. A PERSON HAS TO WANT TO BE GOOD IN THEMSELVES YOU SHOULDN’T DEPEND ON SOMEONE ROMANTICALLY TO CHANGE YOU. Also Just because he died- doesn’t mean that he was redeemed. Its a stupid trope. Because consider if the only way to become a good person is to die- do you ever actually get to be a good person?

ZUKO DIDN’T DIE. HE REDEEMED HIMSELF BEFORE HE EVEN FOUGHT AZULA. Zuko’s character arc was about him trying to figure out hte kind of person he wanted to be. Did he want to be compassionate and thoughtful yet influential? Or did he want to be like his father, ruthless, powerful and cunning? Zuko takes steps to not only apologize to each character he wronged, BUT ACTIVELY IMPROVES HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM. EVEN IN THE EXTENDED COMICS HE DOES HIS BEST TO MAKE AMENDS WITH AZULA.

honestly this will probably end up being a whole essay I write, because looking at Zuko’s character arc is what introduced me to the Heroine’s Journey- like Joseph Cambell’s Hero Journey, but literally one of his students,  Maureen Murdock, said “aye what about this trend in women’s literature” and he said “No theres only the heroe’s journey” and she said “aye fuck you, your wrong and heres why” and came up with the heroine’s journey and god I love it so much and I have a lot of thoughts

4. Are you likely to blush when a sex scene comes up or can you read/watch it with a straight face?

LOLOL NO. Okay lemme put it this way: depending on the fic I can more than likely read it with a straight face. Unless I get super into it and I’m just like OOP OOOOOPPP NOPE. Like that one time I was at work reading an actual book and the girl and guy were getting into it and I was like IDWDJQLDBQLS and constantly looking around to see if anyone saw me blushing. But watching a sex scene? AHAHAHAHAHA NO. I could be alone or with other people I get FLUSTERED and will look away or look at my phone one. I can barely even handle HEAVY make out in movies and shows because I just get FLUSTERED so badly. Considering there’s no intimacy in my life that’s probably a main factor and cause of how I was raised. My mama would always cover my eyes so I’m always like uhhh where’s my cover???

7. Name a character you wouldn’t mind naming someone after.

I’m actually dying at this because the first name that popped into my head was Sephiroth 😂😂 but I would not name my kid that. However if we are talking about naming children after characters: I wouldn’t mind naming my son Levi, Alistair, Eren, or even Rin. For a daughter: I would probably name them after Eowyn or Arwen because I love those names so much and they come from strong characters. This is funny because I actually have a list of names I want to name my kids and majority of them are from movies, games, books, and anime.

8. Do you prefer happy, bittersweet, or sad endings?

It depends actually. I’m not the biggest fan of a lot of happy endings, if it’s written or plays out well then I’m okay with it. Most of the time I like bittersweet or sad endings, mainly because I’m always into the sad stuff and I don’t know why. I know when I’m reading a book if it ends with like a fairy tail happily ever after I’m like meh about it. The only time I was okay with that was the ending for the Tigers Curse series, and the only reason I was okay with it was because of Kishan’s letter at the end. I went on a whole tangent but ya it really just depends on the story to be honest, but I do see myself leaning towards the bittersweet more than the others.

14. Name a fandom, ship, or character that you love that others would send you hate mail for liking.

This is really hard because I have to sit here and actually go through my list of characters I actually like.

Boromir: I’ve had this conversation with a lot of people. They really don’t see Boromir as victim and just as a power hungry, daddy pleasing, idiot who wanted the ring. Like he has more to his character than that plus he made up for it in the end.

Connor Kenway: 🤣 people hate on Connor so much but I love him. I love his character even tho the amount of times I heard “Where is Charles Lee” is enough for one lifetime. He’s interesting and his story is a little on the sad side.

Ravus Nox Fluret: I’ve stayed away from a lot of stuff FFXV because of the lack of love for Ravus. I don’t think I would get literal hate mail, but I see people arguing about this.

Adam (Nier Automata): I love Adam because he’s so intelligent but the things he did to 9S was inexcusable. I tend to overlook it because it was good character development and made me feel things for him and for 9S that I needed.

Overhaul: I guess this can be one because I really stayed away from everything Overhaul for a long time. So I’m mainly putting him here because my friends hate him and I don’t.

ACTUALLY I KNOW A REALLY GOOD ONE.

Soowoon (Yona of the Dawn): HAHA I have no reason for this one other than 🤷🏻‍♀️ hes cool I like him.

As far as ships? I don’t really think I have any ships that people would come at me for?? And fandoms?? I mean I’ve had some people come at me cause I like Dragon Age before. I used to be in the Voltron fandom so I think that’s about the biggest issue I got 😂

17. Are there any tropes you wished were used less often?

Umm honestly I’m not sure if I can pinpoint one trope cause I know I see flaws in a lot of them. I know the whole “weak but gains crazy power” thing is getting a little old. I don’t mean that in a bad way if it’s written well, but a lot of it just feels repetitive. I also am not a fan of overly loud main characters or overly loud characters in general. Don’t get me wrong I still love them but like I wouldn’t be complaining if they were never there to begin with. That’s just my opinion. I’m sure I have more tropes I could throw out there but my brain is fried from all this thinking ☠️

19. If you could be a part of any story, which story would you want to tag along in?

OH SO MANY!!

If I wanted pure adventure for sure Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. If you don’t think I wouldn’t try and save Thorin’s life you’re wrong 😤 Other ones I would be interested in is the Modern Day story for Assassins Creed. Again, gonna try my best to save Desmond. Final Fantasy 7 & 15. Okay now here’s the struggle. I honestly feel like I wouldn’t stop Sephiroth..but I feel like I would be beside him. BUT DANG IT IF I WOULDNT TRY MY BEST TO SAVE ZACK!! Same thing with 15, I would do my best to make sure Iggy didn’t loose his eyesight, Ravus didn’t die, and save Luna and Noctis. 😤 I also would wanna be in Seraph of the End to see what my demon weapon would be and so I can be friends with Shinya 😂 and Haikyuu so I could replay volleyball.

What I was trying to get at was basically I just wanna save some people who didn’t need to die...and have fun 🤣
