Comments Count
I have 85 works on AO3 and I get a kudos email almost every day. Usually just for one to up to three fics, one kudos each, occasionally for more. Occasionally, there will be several kudos for one fic, usually after I've just published something new.
There's recently been an uptick for kudos on my old Metal Gear Solid fics which I can't quite understand but which obviously makes me happy.
But there's no comments.
There's hardly any comments.
I don't have the time for proper data analysis but I was curious and took a look at the comments I received within the last 250 days (arbitrarily because AO3 shows not the date when you've ceceived a comment but a "X days ago").
There were 79 comments* over those 250 days, across 32 fics, from 30 people.
*I did not count replies to my replies (about four instances), nor one person commenting on three separate chapters of a fic in a single day
That there's so many comments across so many fics at all is largely due to one single person, a dear friend, going through a lot of my fics. She managed to leave 21 comments in those 250 days!! That's almost 27 %, more than a quarter of all the comments in that time frame!!! (you know who you are and you know I love you for this!! 💕)
(how did we meet and become friends? She commented on one of my fics and we started a conversation; now we're tumblr and discord and Xmas card friends!)
38 of the 79 comments were on the date of publication (+ 1-2 days) of a new fic and there were 6 new fics in total (some mere ficlets but nvm), which averages out at about 6 comments per new fic, all on or around the date of publication.
Out of all of those 79 comments, only 13 comments came from people totally unknown to me (and 6 of those 13 were on one single fic in one recently popular and very active fandom).
18 comments were by people unknown to me, which have commented before though (and in total that was just 7 whole people). They might be subscribed to me or follow my tumblr because almost all of those were "date of publication" comments.
All the rest, 48 comments, are from people I personally know and am friends with (now) or at least tumblr acquaintaces with, which are actually just 11 people. And we already know one of them is responsible for 21 comments, which leaves 27 comments for the other 10 people, most of those, again, "date of publication" comments or "saw a reblog of mine on tumblr" comments.
I don't know how comparable my AO3 experience is with others because there's so many factors that play into this.
I don't know where I'm going with this other than me being incredibly grateful for those (tumblr) friends who are still loyally reading my fics (which is mostly 4 people + an assorted variety of guest stars) and I dread the moment they move into other fandoms.
It's putting some numbers to that feeling that if your story doesn't get read on that date of publication (or at least the first few days after), the chances of anyone commenting on it sink dramatically unless you attract the rare unicorn who will not only read and kudos your fics once they discover you but will also leave comments.
It's putting numbers to "the fanfic community only really works if we're a community" because strangers are so much less likely to leave a comment. It's "I know most of these people are writers's themselves" and know the joy of receiving comments. They don't see themselves as "consumers of content".
I am grateful I can get a little serotonin boost in the form of AO3's kudos email almost every day. But at some point, when my brain is not being kind to me and the world, you can't help feeling a little disgruntled at all these people who obviously read your story but didn't stop to say 'thank you.' Didn't say 'I liked this.'
I don't know where I'm going with this but to the people who still comment on my fics:
Thank You!

Fic Writer Interview
tagged by @jesuisici33. Thank you.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
33 apparently. How did that happen?
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
486,829
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
first four fics in the Long Story Short Series, and then It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags!
The first doesn't surprise me, just because those were the first stories I wrote so they've been up the longest. The second does.
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes. I love reading comments, and I always kind of feel like I'm having a conversation between the fic I wrote, and the comment, and then the response. It's nice.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
None? I honestly don't think anything I've written has an angsty ending.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
All of them? I'm not writing fic to depress my serotonin levels.
7. Do you write crossovers?
Not really. Or at least not yet. I've referenced 911 (OG) in a couple stories, but no real crossovers. There's one I kind of want to write where Carlos and Eddie knew each other from before, but I haven't figured out what the point of the story would be beyond - hey look they're both from Texas (and not even near each other in Texas)
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Just once. It was weird.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have taught myself how to.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not one I've posted. I have co-written a couple fics that never quite got finished with a friend, in a different fandom.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Well, to write it's definitely TK/Carlos, although I have an unfinished Academic!AU for The Old Guard that I love. To read . . . do not make me choose between my children.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
See above about Academic!AU for The Old Guard. I mean never say never, but it's been a couple of years.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I like to think, dialogue, internal monologue, and a vibrant OC
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Staring at my google docs folder and going, nope not today when it comes to editing.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I don't. A word here or there, but my Spanish is limited to menus and slowly working my way through a museum sign. I wouldn't try and write anything in it.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Published? Tarlos.
Unpublished? Umm, let's not talk about that Smallville fic that's on a thumb drive somewhere. Or the Merlin Acamedic!AU that was just an excuse for a friend and I to write about our love affair with Edinburgh. Or The Old Guard, which I wrote recently enough that it's probably not actually embarrassing and I should really go back and reread and fix because it's like 90% done.
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
RWRB. I love those characters so much.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Knave-verse. Specifically Knave 2.
Also, I have a really soft spot in my heart for through sames of am through haves of give about TK's relationship with Enzo, because I love Enzo and it is criminal how the show has never given us an Enzo (although, let's be honest I'm going to be disappointed if they do and it's not Stanley Tucci).
tagging @carlos-tk, @heartstringsduet, @irispurpurea, @lightningboltreader, @orchidscript, @reyesstrand, @theghostofashton, and @walkinginland

Well, hello Rings of Power fandom folks! Some activity in the tag has got me thinking it might be time for a post such as this one. It’s certainly not new or groundbreaking information by any means, but I figured some ROP-specific content about fanfic, fanfic writers, and how to use AO3 might be helpful, seeing as we’re a new, burgeoning fandom about to go into a (very) long hiatus.
Looking for fanfics?
Archive of Our Own is usually the best place to look! Sometimes fanfic writers will post short fics as text posts on Tumblr, or they might make a post to link to the AO3 page for their fic, but if you’re only searching Tumblr for fanfics, you’re missing a huge amount of the creativity that’s being shared in this fandom!
Tumblr media
As of the writing of this post (October 12th) there are over 200 fanfics in the Archive of Our Own Tag and more being added every day!
You can find them all HERE
Where can I read my “ship?”
Currently the largest “ship” tags for canon characters are:
Galadriel / Halbrand - 33 fics
Arondir / Bronwyn - 26 fics
Elrond & Durin - 16 fics
Elrond / Durin - 12 fics
Tumblr media
*if you’re unfamiliar, the & modifier suggests a platonic, familiar, or non-romantic relationship, whereas the / distinguishes a relationship with romantic or sexual implications. Sometimes writers use both modifiers to express that they are writing about a relationship that straddles the line or changes throughout the course of the fic*
Where are all the Adar fics?
The tags for Adar/Original Character, Adar/Original Female Character, Adar/Reader, and Adar/You have not yet been wrangled (organized and codified by the volunteers at AO3), so it’s a little harder to see them all, but a cursory scroll through the general tag will demonstrate that there are *many* Adar fics.
You can also use the Adar character tag, which currently has 32 works. Not all of these will necessarily feature Adar as the main character or give you only Adar/OC fics, (Adar/Arondir is also a pairing with a handful of fics) but it’s easier to see your options this way.
What about reader-insert fics?
Reader-insert fics are a specific sub-genre of fanfics where the reader (usually expressed by use of the second person - you, your, you're, etc.) is written into a scenario with a canon character. Sometimes this is sexual, sometimes it's simply a moment of hurt/comfort or friendship. These fics are usually tagged Character/Reader, or sometimes Character/You. They might also be tagged as Character/OC, if the author is considering the "reader" to be an original character.
Not all fanfic authors write Reader insert fic. If you're thinking about requesting from a writer in the fandom, take a look at their existing work to see if this is something they specialize in. There are lots of great writers who specifically focus on "Imagines" or Reader inserts if that's what you're looking for.
How do I share my appreciation for writers?
Aw, thanks. It does really mean a lot to us to know that our work is being read and appreciated. If you want more content for your fandom/character/ship, etc. the best way to do that is to share a few words of appreciation for your favorite writers. Writing fanfic is a hobby, one that folks put a lot of time and love into, and it's always nice to know that their effort is being received.
Posting things like "where are all the X fics?" or "why won't anyone write this specific thing I want?" or "come ON, fic writers, you're SLEEPING on X" is definitely NOT a good way to motivate writers. Leaving a polite request in their ask box (if they are open to requests) is generally appreciated!
But the BEST way to motivate writers is to engage with their work.
Reblog their fic posts. Add a reblog or tags sharing how much you liked it.
Reply to their Tumblr fic posts (if they make them).
Go to AO3 and COMMENT on their fics. Kudos are lovely but the serotonin lives in the comments. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, here are a few ideas to get you going:
"I loved this so much! Thank you for writing!"
"This was my favorite line." [copy and paste favorite line]
"This part really reminded me of this specific character moment from the show."
"I read this twice, that's how much I enjoyed it!"
"Thank you for writing these underappreciated characters."
I think that's all for now!
Thank you for reading and sharing this post if you feel so moved. The fandom will probably continue to grow but also experience some dormancy in the season interim, especially as the hiatus drags on. Your favorite creators might spend time with other fandoms or ships while waiting for new canon content. I hope we can all keep pumping each other up, being respectful, and supporting creativity until Season 2 drops. And the best part is, if you want to see something in the fandom, YOU CAN CREATE IT YOURSELF!
Bless.

I saw this story a while back, left a guest kudos, and went on my way. Then, I watched the Punisher for the 3rd time and desperately tried to remember that one fantastic story I read with Frank and the suit. I couldn't remember the title, the author, or anything about the story, but it had something to do with a suit. Cut to me sifting through two years' worth of fanfiction to find this very specific fic and then DEVOURING it all in one sitting, loving every single word of it. Seriously, dude, I was so immersed that I forgot that this isn't canon, and as far as I'm concerned, you wrote everything so impossibly beautiful that you should have been a writer on the show. The mannerisms, the dialogue, quite literally EVERYTHING was perfect. While I'm mentally planning the possibility of a Punisher fanfic, your story is the vibe I want, the vibe I crave. This wasn't a quick one-and-done dopamine rush of a fic; this was long-lasting serotonin high that I floated on for hours. I mean this compliment from the depths of my heart, and as a fellow writer, you have a fantastic gift for telling stories, and I can't wait to read more.
>> I decided to share this comment because it's one of the most rewarding comments I have ever received. Nice Suit represents a huge turning point in my writing and getting this kind of reaction to it means everything to me. I can't even begin to thank the commenter for their wonderfully kind words. <<

Hello!
For the asks:
7. how does receiving or not receiving feedback/support impact you?
10. how has writing positively impacted your mental health or overall mood?
11. Has a fic you’ve written ever caused issues/controversy?
17. What’s the best engagement/interaction/feedback you’ve received from someone who’s read your work?
hello darling /blows u a kiss
7. I live for the ao3 emails tbh. The "You've Got Kudos!" is my daily serotonin. Comments delight me and I screenshot and throw them at my friends like "LOOK AT THIS PERSON." I get kinda sad if I get no responses, I'm like d-did I do something wrong? Even though I write for me lmao
10. I was going through a bad depression at the start of this year caused by autistic burnout on a massive scale and writing has basically ripped me out of that so that I can function. I currently use it like a carrot on a stick to combat executive dysfunction. You can write if you finish x chore. dnvkjjdk It works well.
11. Controversy, no, but I had an actual stalker over an OnS fic on ffnet, who used to send me really scary messages demanding I write things I was not comfortable with. It's actually the reason I stopped writing for so long, and when I came back I reinvented myself completely. Old aliases buuuurn
17. God there's been so many that I consider good. Every time someone throws anything they've created at me over my fics, I lose my mind in delight. Art? Moodboards? "This song reminds me of your story"? Playlists? Fics based on mine? I lose my absolute marbles. W&G gets so much support and I huff that like fumes and start floating and my voice does the helium thing

Hej💜 I've become a huge fanfiction lover in the last 10 months since joining the fandom and I'm curious about comments and commenting! I don't write myself but I try to leave comments as a little thank you for getting to enjoy the art. So I decited to send some questions to the writers I follow here. No pressure to answer ofc I'm just curious, I adore you writers 🦋
1. Do you often leave comments or kudos on stories ? Why/ why not ?
2. What do comments mean to you?
3. What are your favorite type of comments to receive? Long and thoughtful ones? Favorite parts or lines? Praises? Asdfghjkl? Guesses or hopes for the future?
4. Do you reply to comments? Why/why not?
5. Has there been any negative comments? How did you deal with that ?
6. Are there comments that are not necessary negative but you just don't enjoy?
7. Do you ever get nervous how people are going to receive something you are writing? How do you deal with that?
8. Has there been a moment when someone interpreted your writing in a totally different way that you intented or misunderstood you in the comments? How did that make you feel ?
9. Do you ever go back to your comments? Are there comments that stayed with you?
10. Is there something you wish us non-writers would know regarding writing or commenting?
If you are a writer and I didn't ask you, please answer anyway if you feel like doing that! I only follow so many ( and also wanted to ask this anonymously because I'm shy hah). I'm so thankful for all you wonderful writers out there, this fandom is full of super talented people 💜
Hej!! Thank you so much for the ask and the questions, it was fun answering them! <33
I try to always leave a little something if I've enjoyed a fic. Sometimes I don't have time so I'll just leave a kudos but I do intend to always comment!
I could say that I write for myself (which I do!) and that validation isn't everything (which it isn't!) but it's also such a serotonin boost getting to see how people respond to your writing and hearing what parts they liked or resonated with. I love comments, like an infinite amount, it means so much for motivation.
This is such a difficult one because I honestly love all of them. I think my all time favorites might be when people kind of live-tweet their reading and share a line and their reaction to it. So that or maybe comments with favourite lines which I also absolutely adore 🥰
I try to reply to all comments! It's a nice way to interact with the readers and just let them know how grateful I am to have people show interest in my little words
I've actually never gotten any negative comments, apart from the occasional yelling in caps lock at cliffhangers and such, which is completely valid of course! I'm super grateful for this fandom being so positive and supportive over all, we don't really do negativity on creators here, which is amazing
I don't think I've gotten any myself that I haven't enjoyed but sometimes I see comments on other people's fics where the writer might have gotten a minor detail wrong and people feel the need to correct them, sometimes in a not so constructive way, which always makes me feel a bit icky. I think most writers do quite a lot of fic research but it's hard to get every detail right. If it feels important enough to mention a mistake or a detail that's wrong in a fic, maybe ask first? or at the very least try to phrase it in a good way
All. The. Time. I'm super nervous everytime I submit something, especially for chaptered fics (like play my song) where people have actually committed to reading like 30k already and I really want to be able to live up to the expectations and give the story the ending it deserves. I have a habit of reading through things like five extra times before pressing submit just because I get a lil nervous 🙈 But I try to keep in mind that ultimately I write for fun and for myself and as long as I enjoy the chapter or fic myself, that's the most important part.
Hm, not any major ones I don't think, I think my writing is pretty straight-forward most of the time. One thing that came to mind though is how many people in the comments for the earlier chapters of 'play my song' were thinking along the lines of how Simon had to have figured out who Wille was already. Originally he wasn't supposed to figure it out on his own, but inspired by these comments there were some changes made to the main plot line and I think it turned out a lot better that way!
I do! I actually have like a little collection of screenshots of my favourite ever comments and sometimes if I feel low or uninspired I go back and look at them and it never fails to make me smile
Hm no, nothing groundbreaking really, just that writing takes a lot of time so sometimes it's hard to stick to an update schedule when life gets in the way. And comments mean so so much, all the lovely readers leaving little comments are what's keeping writers inspired and motivated so thank you and keep up the good work! ❤️
I'm super curious about other people's responses to these so all my writing followers, consider yourselves tagged if you're up for it!

the magical powers of comments
I'm sharing some of my thoughts on commenting in a post because they became too long for a comment! If we were telling stories around our tribal fire (or under the Party Tree) they would be interactive in the true sense. (Not the pseudo digital "interactive" used to describe apps which actually have very little inter in their active, or very little active for that matter.) We'd receive feedback in real-time through facial expressions, body language, gasps, tears, laughter, etc. People would share their impressions through live group discussion or one-on-one asides, and we'd have a pretty good idea of the impact our creation has made.
But in our nuclear-family isolationist world (even before it was exacerbated by the pandemic) written comments on the internet are often the closest thing we have to that tribal feedback. And we're fortunate to have them, under the circumstances.
But...
While face-to-face interactions activate our social-connection/love hormone oxytocin, digital likes, kudos, comments, etc. with their delayed and uncertain response stimulate our reward-based dopamine system more. They're both part of our complex feel-good system, but the difference between them is like the difference between sugar and protein: they both provide energy, but while the former is a short intense burst that will dump you when it runs out, the latter is longer lasting and gradual. And while both are necessary in their niche, too much or too little of either is unhealthy. And just as protein moderates the effect of sugar, so oxytocin influences dopamine, and without it dopamine gets a bit out of control.
When we use sugar to get the energy we'd normally get from protein we become hyper, tired, irritable, and eventually addicted and unhealthy. It turns out a similar thing is happening with our social interactions. Without the balancing effect of oxytocin/genuine social interaction, our society has become increasingly dependent on quick-fix dopamine hits. fMRI studies show the part of the brain that lights up when we get a like on one of our posts is the same part of the brain that lights up when getting a win on a gambling machine, or a hit of heroin, or while having an orgasm. None of those are inherently harmful when enjoyed in moderation. (Nope, not even heroin). Their destructiveness lies in repetition over time developing into addiction.
The big problem with online social life is that the harmful addictive effects are more insidious, less obvious, with the behavior itself being way more socially acceptable than most other harmful addictions.
So what are the effects of virtual likes and kudos, and at what point do they become harmful? Pretty much the same as any addictive substance/action: initially we get a brief jolt of feel-good that soon fades. And just like anything else, that's absolutely fine in moderation and in balanced combination with other healthy, feel-good activities/substances. But just like any addictive substance, if we over-do [insert addictive action here] over time we start to require more to achieve the same level of feel-good until eventually we become so desensitized that we can't even get enough to feel a fraction of the feel-good we previously experienced. At the same time, if we've been over-stimulating one part of our whole feel-good system while neglecting the other parts (in this case too much dopamine and not enough oxytocin, which can also lead to imbalances in serotonin and endorphins, and although those are the four most well known feel-good hormones, there's loads more and it's way more complex, but just to make the point...), the other neurotransmitters atrophy and we become unable to be stimulated by any of the other things which used to make us feel good, resulting in depression. (Which usually leads to even more destructive behavior in a desperate attempt to feel good again.) For instance, where people once felt content sitting and chatting with friends or family, they now feel compelled to check their devices while in company for virtual notices of acknowledgement of their existence and contribution to the world.
Ok, that's with the not-very-interactive likes and kudos and emoji reactions. What happens with comments?
I don't have any research to refer to on this (and if anyone does I'd be very keen to know about it, thanks!) but I imagine comments go a little way to bridging the gap social connection gap. While there is no physical touch to stimulate oxytocin, there is a form of a 'mental touch' that creates a sense of connection far more than the expressionless likes, notes, kudos, etc.
When one receives a comment that describes the person's physical reaction (I'm crying! I almost spat my tea all over my keyboard! I feel so warm and fuzzy, etc.) we get a glimpse of their facial expression. When a comment details bits of our writing or art that made an impression, or when questions are asked or ideas conveyed, we are invited to respond in turn, and so we experience a little of that social connection we'd share if we were sitting around that tribal fire or under that Party Tree.

Fanfic writers game!
Fic Writers Game
I was tagged by @izabella95! Yay!
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
39 works. But most of them are really long. If you go by chapters there would be a couple hundred.
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
548,869 words. (Wow. See? Long!)
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Originally Doctor Who, and now Good Omens.
4) What are your top five fics by kudos?
Because I missed you (and I like it when you bite) [Archive of Our Own]
Kodachrome (was: Because you move me) - [Archive of Our Own]
The Bet - megzseattle - Good Omens - [Archive of Our Own]
Modern Love (Walks Beside Me) - [Archive of Our Own]
Faeted, Part One - [Archive of Our Own]
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Oh heck yes! Comments are the best thing ever. Absolutely straight serotonin. Made some really really good friends from comments.
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I’m famous for my happy endings but Tell Me Lies - [Archive of Our Own] probably comes the closest.
7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
No, I don’t really care for crossovers, personally. I think I’ve read one or two in my whole life. Sorry, just my preference. There was one where Buffy met the Doctor that was pretty good.
8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not in any major way. One chapter of one of the Serpent and the Seagull got a nastyish comment from a reader who had some kind of childhood trauma triggered by the way Freddie the snake talks, but it was very mild.
9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Nope, not ever. My kid reads my fanfics. She is actually very cool about having a mom who writes fanfics but if I wrote smutty fanfics? She’d die. I’d die. I write right up to the edge of it and then scenes quietly fade to black and we pick up with our heroes later.
Do I read it is a whole other question. :) :) :)
10) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope. Horror. Do people do that?
11) Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes I have!
12) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, I think twice. Both with @zeckarin-blaise, one of my favorite people. We wrote these two and it was really fun: Of Broccoli and Roses (And Other Domestic Pursuits) - [Archive of Our Own] Through the Windows - Zeckarin, [Archive of Our Own]
13) What’s your all time favourite ship?
Oh well, obviously it’s Aziraphale x Crowley. Also quite fond of 11th Doctor x Amy. And occasionally 10th Doctor x Jack which I have written a tiny, tiny bit about.
Other favorite ships – haven’t written them, but David/Patrick on Schitt’s Creek floats my boat and I should probably write something about them someday, and of course Nicky x Joe in The Old Guard. But I will probably not expand my fanfic writing fandoms to include these.
14) What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I started this story about the Greek words for love and damned if I can finish it: By Any Other Name - [Archive of Our Own]
Also I hinted at a larger (and seemingly hysterical) story about Aziraphale and the Olmec king in some of my prompt fics and I’ve been meaning to get back to that and just haven’t. I can’t remember where that lives.
Also – dear to my heart but unfinished forever is the sidebar I wrote as a companion to Tell Me Lies. I wanted to do more with this and tried but got stuck: Side Project: Aziraphale's List of Lies [Archive of Our Own]
15) What are your writing strengths?
I hear from my beta that I’m really good at description. I also think I’m pretty good with snappy dialog.
16) What are your writing weaknesses?
Finding my own plot holes. Seeing where my villians need more development. Frequently despairing of any story that gets complex and needing to be talked down off a ledge.
17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I’ve never done this, or thought about it. Well maybe I have a line or two of French somewhere. I seem to recall asking my beta Zeck how to say something once or twice.
18) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Doctor Who. First thing I ever wrote was chapter one of The Doctor’s Rulebook, which became quite popular back on the fanfiction.net site way back in the day. The Doctor's Rulebook - megzseattle - Doctor Who (2005) [Archive of Our Own]
19) What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
It’s hard to say, but of the Serpent and the Seagull series, I’m inordinately fond of I Will Follow You Into The Dark - megzseattle - Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett [Archive of Our Own]. It was the first heavily plotted, fight scene including thing I’d ever written. I think I’ve gotten better at both of those things since.
First in my heart is my Good Omens AU that I just finished. Super long and at least half of my word count on AO3.
I don’t know who to tag! How about @zeckarin-blaise and @sevdrag (who both have way more pressing things to do) any one else who wants to play?

Open the Door 189
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?  I do! I love getting comments and seeing what parts people like or just a string of emoji. They are little boost of serotonin
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Generally I don’t do angst. I’m most a fluff writer. An Empty Bench is the closest thing I have to true angst
7. Do you write crossovers? No, I’m do write a lot of AUs that are set in other fictional worlds, but don’t have any of the characters so I don’t think would qualify as crossover.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? Haven’t we all? I’ve been hit by g.o.d. twice and had couple really random comments about the pairing making them “uncomfortable” I tag all the pairings and kinks. Don’t like, don’t read.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes, Mostly het ships. I’ve done one orgy and tell myself all the time never again (too many hands) no matter how many times I think about the sequile that only lives in my head.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Don’t think so, I’m not that popular.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? see above, lol
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope, I’m too picky and irresponsible for that
13. What is your all time favorite ship? KakaSaku
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Everyone Goes to Tsunade’s. I really want to finish it, but every time I open it my mind just goes blank or says “look at this NEW sexy idea” I don’t want to officially call it abandoned. I’m going to NOLA in a couple months, maybe I’ll find the kick I need to finish it then
15. What are your writing strengths? Fluffy crack. If that is even a thing. I like to laugh and have happy endings... and happy endings
16. What are your writing weaknesses? follow through and staying focused. I get so excited about a new idea I can’t wait to throw it out, but then another shiney new idea comes along and I’m completely distracted.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? As a lazy American who never learned a second language I avoid it. I feel like it throws off the flow, especially if I have to translate it too, I’m doing good to get it done once.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? I wrote really bad X-men fics in middle school in spiral notebooks that were hidden under my bed.
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written? Smutty, Open the Door, not smutty, The Rivalry Strikes Back

Fic writer asks
Thank you @a-cosmic-elf for tagging me! I love tag games, so thank you for thinking of me!!!
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
17. Such a good number. (That’s my birthday, hehe)
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
189,412. Not bad for two years of posting.
3) How many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?
Really two, Game of Thrones and Marvel (just one). I’ve written a couple of Sherlock fics, but they are staying unpublished.
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Knock Three Times - My exchange fic from last year, where Jaime opens his apartment door to find a naked and wet Brienne standing in front of him, asking to use his phone.
Saving Jaime Lannister - While on a hike in an old forest, Brienne hears a voice in her head, imploring her to find Jaime Lannister. Find him and save him. And she does. And it’s only the beginning.
The Love I’ll Never Recover From - Jaime is inspecting a newly acquired hotel for his father, when he sees a ghost, a ghost with a tragic backstory that she chooses to share with him.
Worthy - A canon divergence where Brienne goes back in time to stop Jaime’s maiming so he can fulfill a prophecy to defeat the Night King. Fun fact, this is the only canon fic I’ve written.
The Stoneheart Protocol - Brienne and Jaime are (space!) bounty hunters, but he’s disappeared. As the Stoneheart Protocol (shoot him on sight, basically) is authorized for him, Brienne goes on a desperate hunt to find him first.
5) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
J+B. It’s a Romeo and Juliet adaptation, and I struggled with the ending, because I felt that I had to remain true to the source material, even if I didn’t feel great about it, which is probably the reason the ending was so hard to write. It’s my only unhappy ending, and I have no plans to repeat that one. None at all.
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
This is such a tricky one, because I love angst and sadness, even if I’m a stalwart believer in happy endings for JB, so even when a story works out, there’s always a twinge of sad to them too.
But, with that in mind, I might go with Saving Jaime Lannister for this one. They’re young, in love, and they have a lifetime ahead of them. They go through a lot in that fic, so they earn their sweet ending.
7) Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?
Not yet, but never say never.
8) Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have dabbled in smut, but it’s not something I’m really comfortable doing. I don’t have a good grasp of writing sex and emotions, and that’s the best kind, so I mostly stay clear of it.
9) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do. Commenting takes a lot out of me (anxious introvert, party of one, right here), so I think it’s important to write back, even if it takes a little while. And really, that whole back and forth system on AO3 is the cheapest serotonin in existence.
10) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, not yet. And hopefully it stays that way.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
As far as I know, no. Woo!
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
That would so cool, but no.
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven’t, but it’s an interesting idea. Writing is such a solo thing for me, so it would be a challenge, but the good kind.
14) What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Stands to reason that it’s JB, because no other ships have inspired me to actually read/write fic to this degree. But here are some others from my life of shipping:
Jeff/Hillary - Remember Wenn
Adama/Roslin - BSG
Michael/Jan - The Office
Ned/Chuck - Pushing Daisies
Shepard/Garrus - Mass Effect
Jackson/April - Grey’s Anatomy
Kevin/Nora - The Leftovers
Sam/Jack - Stargate SG1
15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Earlier this year, I rewatched “The Prince of Tides,” which I first saw when I was 12 or 13, and it was the first adult film that I loved. I absolutely hated the ending, so much so that for like seven years, I just ended the film early whenever I would watch it.
I had this idea for JB that wasn’t a PoT adaptation, because that’s too intense for my writing style, but more like Jaime was an actor trying to transform his image from hot dummy to serious actor. As a young actor, a upcoming band wrote a song, Hollywood Handsome [it’s a real song, and it’s great] about him as a beefcake with no brains, and the idea stuck in the public. He wants to use PoT to transform his public image, with B as his director (and eventual co-star).
It’s a good idea, but I lost the thread of it, and I probably won’t pick it back up anytime soon, if at all.
16) What are your writing strengths?
Focus I guess? I can take an idea, a voice in your head, or a planet that makes you see things, or space bounty hunters, and grind them down to their essentials components to tell a story. Good or bad, well that’s up to reader, but on the flip side of this, I’m also pretty good at spotting when a story is out of my control and walking away early.
17) What are your writing weaknesses?
Body/scenic descriptions. They are TORTURE. I don’t like reading them, and I hate writing them, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. Fanfic is so good for that, because mostly, I really just need to say the Jaime is hot, and Brienne has a rockin’ bod, and I’m done.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I probably wouldn’t try. I only know English, and I’m sure I’d absolutely butcher any other language I tried to implement.
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
AMC’s first TV show was a well-loved but little seen series called “Remember WENN” and it was the first TV show where I dived into online fandom. It was a great experience, even after AMC canceled the show (yes, still bitter about it). I wrote two fics for the show, and I think they are lost to the archives now, and the world is probably better off without them. But thinking back to the one I remember, my love of angst was apparent even back then.
20) What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
This is a tough one, but I narrowed it down to two, and I can’t decide from here, so here are my top two favorites:
Saving Jaime Lannister
Valyria
Tagging: This is a lot, so I’m not going to tag anybody, but if you’re reading this and you want to do it, go for it! It’s a lot of fun.

@buckupbuttercup tagged me to answer fanfic questions that look like they might give me an existential crisis but like in a fun way, let's go
(definitely not doing this while i should be working, shh)
1) how many works do you have on AO3?
69 (nice)
2) what’s your total ao3 word count?
180,173
3) how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
nine fandoms: - the 100 (23) - 911 (16) - harry potter (10) - miraculous ladybug (6) - pokemon sword & shield (6) - gilmore girls (5) - brooklyn nine-nine (1) - percy jackson (1) - object & concept anthropomorphism (1)*
*this is what ao3 decided to label suez canal/ever given fics lmao
4) what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. if your cascade ocean-wave blues come (911) 2. don't want no other shade of blue but you (911) 3. the blues, and then purple-pink skies (911) 4. what you're looking for has been here the whole time (911) 5. when you wish upon a star (pokemon sword & shield)
5) what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
hmm well there's and it's like you can't breathe where i killed lily evans but tbh james is starting to heal by the end
so probably i can't breathe without you (but i have to) for that unrequited love goodness
6) what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
i mean, the blues and then purple-pink skies has a real sappy proposal at the end, so there's that
in my eyes, my heart, my soul is also just... really fucking soft
7) do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
i haven't ever done one but i probably would if an idea struck me tbh
8) do you write smut? if so what kind?
oh boy do i ever
i literally have a series on ao3 dedicated to just collecting my pwps in one place lol
for 911, which is what i'm currently writing in, so far i've only done a little bit in you look wonderful tonight, but i've got some ideas waiting to happen
9) do you respond to comments, why or why not?
no, i don't -- not because i don't appreciate them, because trust me, the serotonin i get from ao3 comments literally gets me through the day sometimes
but because my dumb brain is like "wait no if you start replying now you have to reply to every! single! one! because otherwise someone who commented on something eight years ago might see and think you hate them specifically" so it's easier to just... not
thanks, brain
10) have you ever received hate on a fic?
i mean... does this count lmao (no it doesn't)
Tumblr media
11) have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i know of
12) have you ever had a fic translated?
also not that i know of
13) have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, and honestly i don't think i could, because i get weirdly particular about writing stuff (and also i think i would probably be annoying to work with tbh)
14) what’s your all time favorite ship?
i mean... usually whatever i'm focusing on is my favourite at the time, i don't know if i know how to put them in order???
(i do have a soft spot for percabeth though)
15) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
there's a miraculous ladybug social media AU that i started that was going to be really funny, but i fell into the ML fandom really quick and then fell out almost as quick and so i don't know if i can get the vibes back enough to finish it
maybe i'll rewatch the show once s4 finishes airing and it'll come back to me, who knows
16) what are your writing strengths?
i think i'm good at like, inserting little bits of humour into my narration to keep it engaging, and recently i think i've been getting better at imagery and metaphor
17) what are your writing weaknesses?
well first of all i'm not good at seeing longer projects through to the end lol
and in general my fics tend to be more vibes than plot, which is good sometimes but also... sometimes plot would be good
18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
i mean... is there a good reason for it? if yes, sure, if i can make sure it's accurate (linguistically, culturally, and also for the character). if not, why would i?
19) what was the first fandom you wrote for?
harry potter lmao i am a stereotypical millennial
20) what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
you would make me choose amongst my children???
but uhhhh okay here is a gilmore girls pwp i like a lot lmao and this buddie fic is just. idiots to lovers in its purest form which i love a lot. and let's not forget vampire!buck, my beloved, more of whom is coming your way at uhhh some point in the not too distant future
tagging people still makes me anxious but uhh hey @ace-diaz you wanna do this? (and anyone else who sees it and wants to!)

Author Interview Tag
Tagged by @dragonnan. Thanks!
Name: Aria
Fandoms: I’m assuming this means active fandoms. If so: Lucifer. If it also means previous fandoms: Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman, Forever Knight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Where you post: Now, exclusively Ao3. Previously: FFnet and Livejournal.
Most popular multi-chapter fic: It’s honestly hard for me to discern popularity differences, objectively, between several of my fanfics, given the different mediums I’ve posted them on, and the different amounts of time they’ve each existed. Castaway had a huge response, definitely has the most kudos by leaps and bounds, and has popped up on the most rec lists. Lightning Strikes Twice, meanwhile, had over a million hits and I don’t know how many favorites on FFnet before I took it down. The story I’m posting now, For Each Ecstatic Instant, is (I think) on track to receive the most comments/discussion by the time it completes. So ... I guess it depends how you define popularity?
Favorite story you’ve written so far: I think my latest, For Each Ecstatic Instant. It’s by far the most complicated story I’ve ever written, weaving together a bunch of different plots. I learned a ton from writing it. But ... I’m a what I call a “toddler” writer. I’m always most fond of my newest shiniest toy ;p
Fic you were nervous to post: Uh ... all of them? Lol. I make myself sick with nerves every single time. With For Each Ecstatic Instant, I was actually so nervous I was debating posting it under a secret pseudonym just to feel more secure.
How you choose your titles: It varies. Sometimes I’ll pick relevant lines from poems I enjoy. Sometimes song titles. Sometimes major themes or plays on words. Sometimes bits of dialogue. Really depends.
Do you outline: Always. But as I write more and hone my ideas, my outlines go through drafts as much as my stories do. Usually if I reach a point where my outline goes right and my story really REALLY wants to go left, I’ll pause and re-draft my outline from that point onward. That way, before I jump head first into water I haven’t measured, I always have a general idea about how to get to the ending I desire.
Complete: 46 on Ao3, but I have 18 on FFnet that I never transferred, so ... 64?
In progress: 1, though it’s fully drafted, just not fully edited or posted yet.
Coming soon/not yet started: I have a huge list of plot bunnies, but I have no idea if I’ll ever get the bug to actually write them. I think it largely depends on how 5B ends. Top things on my list I’ve been eyeballing for a while: a Lucifer S1 alternate canon AU in which Lucifer falls now instead of ages ago (essentially, into Chloe’s backyard while she’s on administrative leave after the Malcolm shooting); a long platonic hurt/comfort-y Lucifer & Dan story involving an undercover investigation gone super wrong; multiple short dialogue prompts that have been waiting for my attention since 2019; and another Christmas fic, sorta bittersweet It’s a Wonderful Life-y, but not?
Do you accept prompts: Rarely but not never. A lot of what people seem to consider prompts these days, I consider synopses, and that’s just no fun for me. Not to mention I'm usually never lacking for ideas, just time. But a genuine prompt can be really fun to do when I’m in the mood.
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: None. I’m too consumed with posting For Each Ecstatic Instant right now to worry about writing something new. Plus, I’m really just in wait-and-see mode right now.
Tagging: @pellaaearien @hiromystory @thewollfgang @elleflies @matchstickdolly @hrfiction @adragonstale @serotonin-up
And of course anybody else who’d like to play :)

Note
8 and 9 for asks!
Thanks for the ask!
8. if you got a computer virus that deleted all your fics but had just enough time to save one before they were wiped out, which fic would you pick and why?
ohh this is such a hard question!!! I’m gonna say “Why Breaks Thou The Wand” bc it’s the most AU worldbuilding I’ve had to do.  Or maybe “Halos Made of Summer, Ribbons Made of Spring” simply because it’s Long and losing it would crush my spirit.
9:  the “you got kudos“ e-mail is usually much appreciated, but is there a fic you wish you didn’t get these e-mails for? if so, which one and why?
I actually have my AO3 set to not send me kudos emails bc they clog my inbox.  Instead I periodically open and refresh my “works” page to see if the counts have gone up to scrape out some spare serotonin lol.  But I have emails on for comments, and I do love to get comments.  For the most part, I get nice comments.
But I’m still kind of shocked by one comment I received criticizing part of a fic, and i was like “oh no I’m a bad writer”.  Because I’m a nosy bitch, I opened their ao3 profile to see if they’d written anything themselves (stones and glass houses and whatnot) and saw that they’d written a bunch of self-insert style white pride fic??? of like, expelling muslim people from Italy??? so that was a fast Delete Comment from me.  Like.  glass houses indeed. jfc.  Like, i’m pretty lucky/ good at curating my little corner of fandom, so I always get surprised when some drama blows through like a hurricane, like “I didn’t realize you guys fight about this stuff” but getting wacky notifications like that is a reality check for me.
So I don’t so much have A Fic In Mind it’s more that if i had some free wishes, I would wish that no one ever got flame messages or anon hate ever again.
