Original story: And then I died(tw abuse, mentions of death and suicide)
From the first moment I opened my eyes, life for me always ended early. Either as a maid for a villainess going through dementia, a knight under a tyrant’s rule, or as a young child mercilessly slaughtered by a psychopath. But before each of my deaths I would always witness it. The blossoming love of a typical main character who seems to battle a climaxing plot but I never lived long enough to see it end.
My recent death had been when I was on my way home through the streets of Gangnam I witnessed a distraught woman walking alone as the drizzling rain starts to pour. I too did not possess an umbrella and therefore was unable to service the poor lady. She was beautiful and dashing and in this life I was a young teen girl rushing home.
Just like any typical k-drama there was a main lead and he was the only one who could save her from the rain. At that moment my heart was relieved but jealousy also followed suit. In front of me instead was a masked man who tackled me into my grave.
I wake up now as a mom to kids I often abuse on the daily.
Married into an abusive family with in-laws who have nothing good to say but blame me I feel as if they all should die. Staring at the young toddlers whose lives are so easily in the palms of my hand I lash out my frustration onto them as expected of me. The abusive-good for nothing, mother who they beg, “Mom, you’re hurting me. Stop hurting me, stop hurting me!” Until I run out of breath and fall into my chair contemplating my failures and insecurities.
“It’s your dad’s fault, he made me like this!” I yell, voice hoarse with sweat precipitating on my face.
Is this the type of life I really want?
Who am I acting for?
I ponder this silently, switching from looking at my poor miserable children to the tv reflection of my miserable self. Why couldn’t I have been some sort of main lead?
“Take a forty and go buy yourself and your brother something to eat. Let your mom sit with herself for a bit.”
They were nervous, of course they would be but I haven’t fed them so they took the cash and just before they left, maybe forever, “Mom’s very sorry. I am so sorry to have given you such a horrible life.” My voice solemn and quiet but I just hope the cycle doesn’t repeat.
Waking up in the morning I brush my teeth energetically and cautiously walk around my sleeping husband, I pull out the savings I had and got myself to the front of my children’s’ bedroom. I’ll give them a better life, I’ll send them off to a well-off family and then kill myself.
It’s hard to repair the damage of a broken relationship in this life so I should just try in my next one. Tapping my kids awake I offer them to run away with me expecting rejections, now we’re on the run to find a man I kind of know.
Someone who loves to be kind to side characters like me. A middle-class doctor who helped me give birth.
“Susie, what a surprise! Come in” Dr, Lee exuberantly cheers. I haven’t heard that name at all after getting married and it startles me with my own tears.
Crying my heart out was something I haven’t done in a long long time.m
“Can you do me a favor Doctor, can you care for these boys for me and treat them as if they were your own. They’re smart and very capable of many things. They know how to clean the house, wash the dishes, laundry, and they can even give great massages-I think that’s enough Susie”
Dr. Lee smiles, “I won’t ask why or inquire anymore, if you are in need of help I got plenty to offer. I’ve been looking for some help around here myself considering how lonely it gets for me, maybe having two energetic boys would be ideal.”
I smile back, “You’re not wrong, they’re certainly great.”
These boys are only nine and twelve and here I’m abandoning them with someone more capable. The whole time there I could not bear to look at their faces but walking out now with my back facing them I do slightly regret. It’s not so bad to turn around one last time?
No, it was wrong of me to consider such a thing because all I saw was animosity and glares.
“I hope you boys grow up strong and healthy, forget about this mother and live your life!”
And then I died.
It was instant. A death so painless I felt resentful, torturing young children just to now escape from the responsibilities and karma. How much more shameless could I be?
Today I wake up alone in a room, a prison cell. This is the karma I was running away from but this time it’ll be different.
End.

Love Language|| Jujutsu Kaisen
“I wanna be fluent in your love language. Learning your love language.”
A/N: If you didn’t guess from the tagline this is inspired by the song love language by Kehlani. I’ll probably do more of these with different shows and what not because why not. If I missed anyone lmk and I can make a part 2. Also please tag spoilers appropriately esp for manga readers, that being said spoilers for the prequel? manga on Yuuta’s part.
Characters: Itadori, Fushiguro, Kugisaki, Maki, Inumaki, Okkotsu, Gojo, Nanami, Sukuna
Warnings: said it b4 but spoiler warnings in general but esp on Yuuji, Yuuta, and Maki’s parts
Plot synopsis: The 5 love languages; physical affection, quality time, words of affirmation, gift giving and acts of service, and how each jujutsu kaisen character shows their love and affection for you. Ft. a gender neutral reader!
Word count: 2352
Tumblr media
Itadori Yuuji
Love Language: Quality time and physical affection
Ok listen-
So for physical affection, Yuuji’s just that kind of person
He is all about giving to you
He’s holding hands with you if you’re ever walking anywhere, and if you’re not a hand holder pls pls pls let him hold your pinky he likes the reassurance
No but seriously he loves to hold you like yall could be walking in completely opposite directions and he’ll try to find some way to hold onto you until the very last second
And even then he’s all ‘:( babe imy’
‘Yuuji we just talked 2 minutes ago’
Another way he shows his love is through quality time
I think for him this is the biggest thing overall, esp as a jujutsu sorcerer bcus you never know yk but also because you’re important to him
Like remember how he literally went to occult club so that he could get out of school in time to go visit his grandpa...ye :(
He also loves finding dumb touristy things to do with you while in Tokyo or anywhere yall go together on a mission
If you get together before he died and came back then that time he had to spend away from you literally killed him
Like my mans was goin THROUGH it
He almost considered spoiling Gojo’s secret
When he sees you again, he’s not gonna let go for like a solid day
Fushiguro Megumi
Love Language: acts of service and words of affirmation
This boy loves you so much
He loves to tell you all the things he loves about you when you’re alone
But he’s a little awkward with his words sometimes, hence where acts of service come in
He’ll immediately offer to hold your things, run to help you train or study, and if you’re cold? He’s fully prepared to never see his jacket again
Also he can’t cook but he’s fully prepared to suffer hearing Sukuna and suffering through Yuuji’s antics if it means he can learn how to make your favorite food
He also will surprise you by making you a playlist of all the songs that you’ve had stuck in your head and sends it to you randomly out of the blue one day like ‘thought you might like this’
However the best of both worlds is when he leaves you little notes throughout the day or sends you texts asking if you need anything or just encouraging you to keep going
Negl he’s lowkey the president of the Y/N support club bcus-
You need anything? It’s yours
Cravings? Sad? Angry? What do you need bby, I’ve got it for you
Also he’s totally the type to be like you need help fuckin this person up?
Also before yall started dating, Fushiguro was a mess
He was constantly asking to spar with you and go on missions, basically anything he could do to be near you
End of the day, Fushiguro loves you and makes sure you know it whether it’s through his actions or his words
Kugisaki Nobara
Love Language: physical affection
So, she’s not the best with words, she tries but like someone help her bcus she is LOST
Like when she had a crush on you she was like “c’mere dumbass i wanna give you a hug”
In fact, she still is like “c’mere” but now you are dating :)
She loves you though and at first she doesn’t really know how to show it
But one day you both come home from training and you just look at each other like ‘yeah today sucks’ and yall both just held each other for the rest of the day
After that, she decided that she wants to do that with you but like always
She’s holding your hand, kissing your cheek when you go shopping, etc. etc.
She really loves to cling to you because she always has this fear that maybe one day you’ll get killed or just disappear so she figures might as well hold onto you for as long as we’ve got
After missions, she’s running up to you and if you aren’t prepared for the tackle, you’re probably gonna fall
On dates too, like if you guys have to meet up for a date, she’s tackling you
On the subject of dates...
She doesn’t mind PDA, and while she might hold your hand or arm so that you don’t get separated
She also doesn’t mind wiping food off your face and eating it, only to then kiss the spot on your face the food was previously at
She will split her shopping load between the two of you, however she will be slightly pouty if she’s carrying more than you (she then cheers up when she realizes she can do more shopping to “balance” the two of you)
In private she’s very cuddly and kissy which honestly isn’t that bad until it gets hot
At which point she’ll just say turn on the ac or convince you to walk around in a tank top (or something like it) so that she can continue holding you
Tbh she prefers the big spoon, but if she’s ever upset you let her be the little spoon >:(
All in all a very loving girlfriend who tries her best to show how much she loves you by glomping you at any given moment.
Zenin Maki
Love language: acts of service and quality time
So you’re telling me that Maki wouldn’t immediately go out of her way to make sure her and her s/o can spend as much time together as possible?????
Like she’s super observant (which can cause her to be a bit harsh, see Yuuta) but she can always tell what’s bothering you
So if you’re upset that you haven’t been spending enough time together due to her being out on missions or otherwise busy she’s immediately running to finish her stuff and spend time with you.
((She’s very sorry, but on the bright side she brought your favorites!))
Maki is also an acts of service type
This mostly ties in with her kind of direct action way of thinking
She thinks she’s slick but you can always see her sneaking around to do small things like grabbing your laundry for you and folding it
She’s very much like if you love someone, you gotta prove it
Overall, dates with her are very intimate and personal to the two of you
Like she’ll take you to a frog pond you landed in during a fight once
Or you’ll take her to a street fair that serves this exclusive food that Maki mentioned wanting to try
However, Maki shows her love through quality time and acts of service and while she does receive love from these to a degree, she is very much a words of affirmation gal
She’s not insecure in her day to day life but she has her moments, everyone does
Sometimes, she’ll feel like shit and a failure and all she wants is for you to say that she’s doing amazing and that she’s a great girlfriend.
Inumaki Toge
Love language: Physical affection
Because of his curse, he can’t exactly express how he feels about you through words
He does text you frequently throughout the day (I’ll have to do a hc abt that someday)
But he’d prefer not to be on his phone to communicate if you’re right in front of him
So he does the next best thing and just smothers you in physical affection
He loves kissing you the most
Like he could spend hours just kissing you if you let him (please let him)
But in public, he gets if you’re not a big fan of pda he’s willing to tone it down as long as he gets kisses later in private
He’d still prefer it if you held his hand or linked pinkies maintaining touch in some way
Also, unrelated, but it means so much to him if you try to understand his sushi language
He knows realistically the foundation of any relationship is communication so already he’s at a disadvantage because of his curse
But if he sees you like take notes after he says something or start to need him to text you to translate, his heart is swelling
Like ‘omg this person loves me enough to learn a whole new language <333′
Another tangent but before you were together he was struggling so muchhhh
Like how does one express their feelings for someone without words?
If you’re Inumaki, you buy some flowers and text said person to meet you at a cafe
It took an embarrassingly long time for you to realize it was a date, but once you did, you ever so gently linked pinkies with Toge
Okkotsu Yuuta
Love language: words. of. affirmation.
He’s literally so sensitive please tell him you love him regularly
In return he’ll be sure to tell you how much he loves you too
He knows that he can’t really be there for you as much as he’d like but he likes to let you know that he’s thinking of you
Doesn’t matter the time, if you call, he’s answering
If he doesn’t he’ll cry he’ll immediately call you back and is apologizing for missing your call
You assure him it’s no big deal but the man has his volume turned all the way up and changed your ringtone to one specific for you by the time you’ve even said hey
Aside from that, he really is sensitive
He’s been through a lot especially with Rika as well as growing up alone and bullied
So for him, it’s everything to hear that you like having him around and don’t think he’s too much or anything like that
Of course, he gets better with time, trusting you and having the confidence in himself to not need constant assurance
That being said, if you ever just whisper in his ear, “I love you, Yuuta.”
That’s not your boyfriend, that’s a puddle of love on the floor
(Maki, Panda, and Inumaki had a field day when they saw him, Fushiguro now questions if Yuuta really is a respectable 2nd year.)
Gojo Satoru
Love language: gift giving and quality time
So Gojo doesn’t exactly get to spend a ton of time
Between missions, him beefing with higher ups, and you and him playing parent the baby sorcerers yall don’t exactly get time to go out much
In which case Gojo tends to default to two options:
He’ll either go the extra mile to try and spend time with you
Whether that be an at home date where he tries and fails to surprise you with a home cooked meal
Or a date out at a restaurant or cafe (which you tend to visit after his home cooking efforts)
OR he’ll bring you various souvenirs from his missions
He loves to spoil you, and if he could he’d probably bring you back a whole store’s worth of stuff
But alas, airport security regulations
Anyways, he loves to spoil you especially if he can spoil you with sweets because it benefits him in two ways
He treasures all the time you spend together, and he does try to overcompensate for his absence with gifts
Despite your assurances, it’s kind of a guilty pleasure at this point (just let him, trying to argue just goads him on further)
He doesn’t only buy you small things, he enjoys buying you outfits
And he especially likes seeing you in them
Kento Nanami
Love Language: acts of service
Y’all remember the episode where he killed that curse that was bothering that baker lady?? Yea that
He’s literally such an acts of service boyfriend it’s not even funny
Before you got together, he would memorize your coffee order and bring you a cup pretty much everyday like clockwork
Now that you’re togehter, he wakes up before you so h=that when you wake up there’s the smell of coffee throughout the house
When you come out of you’re shared bedroom and he’s just scrooling through his phone like “mornin’”
Of course you already made the bed and ironed his clothes because relationships are give and take
And then when you leave for your jobs in the morning, he kisses you and holds the door open for you
He’ll draw a bath for you if he gets home before you, if you let him join or not is up to you
Also, if you ever get sick, he’s actually the best
Like he isn’t the best cook but he can heat up soup and tea
He’ll run to the store while you’re asleep and when you wake up, there’s like a whole tray of food in front of you and he’s like ‘it’s important to eat and drink so your body can heal’
And when you inevitably fall asleep after eating and taking medicine at his insistence, he tucks you in and clears away the dishes, exiting with little more than a kiss to your head
Ryoumen Sukuna
Love Language: gift giving and acts of service
So like Sukuna never says he loves you...ever
But he does notice if someone or something’s making you uncomfortable, and if so, said entity’s head will be presented to you later that day
You also just so happen to be the only person he can tolerate being around him for longer than 20 seconds
He also loves to give you jewelry, he likes seeing you adorned in something from him
He also isn’t gonna just handle all your problems for you, he will push you to become stronger by training with you
He’ll also expect this energy to be reciprocated, as long as you’re pushing yourself to be better, he’s content with that
(He wants to see you grow because he’s scared that if he ever gets caught lackin one day you’ll end up dead)
He’ll never tell you or admit it, but Sukuna truly does care for you and hold you in a regard that he doesn’t have for others
So be grateful jkjk

The man watched with cold eyes as the young female body fell from his hold to the floor with a thud. He kneeled down and places his hand on her neck to check for a pulse. When he found no signs of life, he sighed in annoyance, “Fuck...I didn’t even get to try her out yet.” What was her name again? He didn’t know. Well, he didn’t really care. If he is feeling frustrated, there is usually one in his vicinity doing her chores where he can just grab them and do as he pleases. They don’t fight and he likes that, but it has started to get boring. This girl was different. She was probably new and didn’t know what to do, so she had a tiny bit of fight to her. But, she apparently didn’t know how to clean his desk properly, so she got herself a little too hard of a squeeze to the neck.
The prince huffed and went down the hall to let the guards know to remove the body that was in his chambers. They immediately took action, rushing with haste to remove the inconvenience from their majesty’s room. The man walked into the banquet hall where his parents and 6 brothers were eating their dinner.
“Yoongi my daring!” his mother called him over to her, taking his hand, “you must try the elk! Jungkook killed it today and it’s the biggest one anyone has ever shot! It is absolutely delicious!” Yoongi looked over at his youngest brother who had two servant girls on either side of him, begging for his attention. It annoyed Yoongi that Jungkook could just bat an eyelash and would have 5 women at his feet ready to suck his cock. Why the fuck was he so popular? “Nice kill.” he said to the youngest as he sat down next to his second younger brother, Namjoon. Namjoon was one of the brothers he tolerated well. He was a smart man and handsome at that. If he had been born first, he would have been a good king. He also had good luck when it came to fucking.
“Mother,” Yoongi said as he was served a piece of elk with roasted vegetables, “I need a new bedchamber maid.” His mother sighed, “Did you dispose of another one already?! Didn’t she just start last week? Yoongi, this is the 4th one in the past month and a half!” “She couldn’t do her job properly. I did what I had to.” The second eldest prince huffed.
“Mother,” Jimin, the third youngest spoke up, “where are you finding these women? What’s their status?” “I think this last batch came from Hearthfield. A few of the girls were daughters of the noblemen whom we paid handsomely for.” she recalled. Jimin laughed, “That’s your problem! You’ve been getting girls who don’t do that stuff. You need to go to Seaport to find the best girls. That’s were I get my bedchamber maids from. They know how to work, and they know how to properly serve a man.” The queen smiled warmly at her third youngest, “Thank you Jimin. Yoongi, I will send out the guards to Seaport to find more women to work at the castle. You may come down to the courtyard and inspect them. Though you may not pick yet, for they need to be trained.” “Thank you mother,” Yoongi said as he dug into his meal.
“Y/N!” an older male voice called to the girl staring at the sea, “Go help your brother with the crab traps. Remember, females with eggs-“ “get thrown back, males as big as the palm can stay. Got it!” the young girl finished for him, jogging along the dirt path to their dock.
Y/N and her family are fishermen. Well, her stepfather and stepbrother are. Her mother passed away 3 years ago when she was 18 and she never really could recall her own father. Her stepfather wasn’t a bad person. He treated her like a human being, but there was always a wall that she felt he put up around himself. She and her stepbrother tolerated each other when it came to working. He wasn’t the worst person in the world, but he always made it known that he was superior to her. Sometimes she felt like she didn’t belong in her own home, but she enjoys working by the sea. She walked onto the dock where her stepbrother was already going through one of their crab traps. “Hey,” he said, not looking up at her, “you know what to do. Better go fast so we make it back before dark.” Y/N nodded and went to the next crab trap, opening it up and sorting their catch. The sun had begun to set when they finished. Y/N and her stepbrother loaded the wagon with buckets of crab. Her brother got on and started the horse towards the village where the best crabs will be picked to be taken to the royal family. “You go on back. I’ll take them.” her stepbrother said. She nodded and began walking back home. Y/N never thought much of the royal family other than being jealous that they get the best of what they caught. She sometimes wonders what they are like. As she walks back, she closes her eyes and feels the sea wind on her face. She can practically taste the salt in the wind. She’s happy here. She doesn’t need to worry about some royal family. Her life is good.
When Y/N was finally able to spot her home, she saw a group of men in armor with horses in front of her home, conversing with her step dad. She thinks nothing of it and continues her walk. She then notices the head guard hand over a sack of what looked like money to her stepfather. Y/N got excited thinking that maybe the royals were paying their subjects extra money for their good food and ran toward her stepfather. When she arrived, all of the men looked at her. “Is this her?” the guard asked her stepfather. “Yes sir,” he replied, “she does not have much to pack that she would really need there, so she is ready to go whenever.” Y/N looked at her stepfather in confusion, “Where am I going? What do I need to get?” Before he could answer, the guard spoke, “The king and queen sent us out to find young women to serve them in the castle. We seem to have had a drop in servants recently and are paying families to hand over their daughters.” “But you surly must have enough!” she said, sending a pleading look to her father, “we are happy here! I wouldn’t be much help! I only know how to fish!” “Y/N!” her stepfather’s voice increased, “You must go. We have barely had enough money to feed three mouths since your mother died. She would have agreed to this.” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Her family was giving her up? After all she had done for them? Tears began to well up in her eyes. The guard was the next to speak, “I will give you three minutes. Grab what you can carry, come back out and get into the wagon. We leave for the castle.” Y/N barley nodded and slowly walked into her home to her room. She got a small crossbody satchel and put her small stuffed bear her mom made her in it, her favorite shell and her notebook. She found her mom’s necklace and put it on. It was a simple necklace; a silver pendant that had the words “my love for you is as great as the sea” etched into it. When she came out, her brother had just returned. She looked at him and he avoided her gaze which broke her heart. “Come girl,” the captain said, “We haven’t got all day. We must return this evening.” Y/N nodded and followed his horse to the wagon. When she hopped on, there were only 6 other women. They were very pretty so she felt left out. Granted, Y/N didn’t really have the luxury of having a mirror so she never really knew if she was pretty, not that she cared anyways. She looked back at her home as it slowly disappeared from view, already missing her life on the sea. After what seemed to be a few hours, the group arrived at the gate of a great stone castle. Y/N thought the castle came straight from a fairy tale book.
The wagon was brought into the courtyard where there was an older woman waiting. The girls were lined up in front of her. She walked down the line of young girls, inspecting them. She sighed and turned around to face them all. “Welcome, ladies, to the castle of Bangtan. My name is Lilith and I am your head maid. You all have been chosen to be servants of the royal family. These duties include cleaning the interior of castle, serving food to the royal family at meals or guests during balls, doing their laundry or fetching anything they ask for. There are a few rules you MUST follow; NEVER look a royal in the eye unless told to by one, NEVER speak informally to a royal, only speak when spoken to and NEVER refuse service to a royal. Do what you are told and life will be easy. Now, your training will begin at 7 AM, I will take you to your quarters. I will show you where to meet me in the morning. Come along and do not fall behind.” The girls looked at each other in confusion as they followed the head maid into the castle. Y/N felt someone staring at her but when she looked back, she saw nothing. She quickly followed the group into the doors so that she won’t be left behind.
“So my darling,” the queen said to her second oldest son, “what do you think?” Yoongi huffed as he watched the girl with h/c hair rush to catch up to the group. “She looks like work,” the queen sighed, “hopefully she will last longer than the one who was disposed of three days after arriving.” Yoongi on the other hand was intrigued by the young girl. He couldn’t get a good look at her face, but her posture was different from the other girls. They were making themselves small while she stood tall. She seemed strong, like she had some fight in her. Yoongi is intrigued by that. The queen could see the wheels turning in his head, “Has one already caught your attention my dear?” “There is one that is particularly interesting,” he said folding his arms, “but we will have to see.” “Do not mess with them immediately,” the queen warned, “they need to train and get used to their new environment. Give them a week.” With that she pressed a kiss to his cheek and walked back inside. Yoongi went back to his room and lay down on his bed. He couldn’t get that h/c out of his head. He knew he was not supposed to interact with the new servants until they are properly trained, but what’s training without an actual royal? A smirk played on the prince’s lips as he thought about the next day until he fell asleep.

Rain on me
No one asked for it- I decided to do it anyway.
This is my first time writing xreader, also English isn’t my first language, so I’m obviously thankful for all of your tips and critics! I did try to keep it free of anything describing the reader (which wasn’t too hard considering the length of the story...)
Summary: After the reader had a really bad day she’s coming home to find Ben already at her apartment. Fluff ensues.
Warning: none, except for fluff (and excessive use of comma)
Relationships: Ben Barnes x reader
Word count: ~1.100 words
'Argh' you thought when you left the train station to find the big black clouds that had started to collect all afternoon had decided to finally make it rain. 'Just what I've been missing today.' With a wary sigh you stepped into the pour, pulling the hood of your thin jacket over your head in a senseless try to protect your hair from the rain. Hurrying down the street you managed to get your ten minute foot-walk from the station to your apartment down to about five. Trying to shake a bit of the water off you opened the door, looking into your letterbox before deciding to take the elevator today. 'Out of service. Of fucking course.' Your day really was going shit so far. Taking one step at a time you realized that not only were you starving but exhausted. Finally unlocking the door to your apartment you found the light in the living room was on already. 'At least something', you thought with a relieved sigh and a tired smile. "Hey sweetheart" you greeted him with a soft call, just in case he was taking a nap or making a call. Seconds later he appeared in the doorway, your cat hot on his heels. "Hey there, stranger" His smile made your heart squeeze for a second. Every time you saw him you realized how damn lucky you were. His eyes widening at your state he said "Oooohh, I'd hoped you would make it home before it started to pour..." "Seems I'm out of luck today" you chuckled, earning you a quiet laugh while he came closer. "Not entirely" he said "I pre-heated the bathroom for you." "You know I love you, right?" You asked, giving him a quick kiss before putting your clothes into the laundry machine that was standing in the bathroom. His smile widened, his nose crunching up adorably. "And I love you, which is why you're going to take that shower and have dinner with me afterwards." You couldn't help but smile back. "Thank you, Ben, really." "Nothing to thank for, dear. Now go shower, I'll get you some clothes and make sure Dinner's ready by the time you are." With that he left the bathroom, softly closing the door behind him. Dazed, you were looking at the door. What did you do to deserve him? Right before you turned the water on you heard him talking to your cat about how she, too, had to be on good behavior today to improve your mood. 'That dork' you thought, smiling, while hot steam started to fill the room.
After you were done, Dinner was ready, just like Ben had promised you. He'd even gone so far and lit a couple candles on the dinner table. "I can't thank you enough for this, Ben" you told him, while hugging him from behind where he was standing at the kitchen counter. He turned around in your arms, making you look at him. "You doing better?" His face was serious, checking your face for signs of improvement. "I am, really. And really hungry." You buried your face in his shoulder for a second, his hands rubbing over your shoulders in a calming manner before you broke apart. Sitting down at the table you smiled at him over your food- simply seeing him sit there made you unbelievably happy. "So" you said after a few minutes of eating in silence. "How was your day?" With time it had become a ritual of yours to talk about your day over dinner, and just because today had sucked for you (as he already knew from the countless text messages he'd gotten from you during the day) didn't mean you didn't care about his day. "Oh, you know, today I had this thing for the new project..." as he told you about his meetings and interviews you noticed the happy glint in his eyes, the scrunching of his nose when he let out a small laugh at something and the way he would always look at you to make sure you were still listening. You couldn't bear to look away. Not when you were so happy to have him in your life.
Later, lying in bed, cuddled up to each other with your cat laying on top of you softly purring into your ear, you had a nice and calming round of pillow talk. The soft light of the bedside lamp made you both sleepy, still trying to stay awake. "Or we could go to South America" you murmured "I've always wanted to go there, but going alone..." "Me too. Every time I watch a documentary about it I try to imagine what it's like to be there, but I never can" You laughed softly at his enthusiasm, him chuckling along. Suddenly he grew serious. "Where would you want to live, you know- long term?" Taking a look at his face, the way he bit his lip nervously, you took a second before answering. You knew that family was quite important to him, but also that he would leave everyone of his friends and family behind if it meant making you happy. "When I was a teenager I always dreamed of a small house in the middle of nowhere. Back then I was sure it was going to be in Iceland, but you know how I am with cold...so I decided it was going to be in Great Britain, Ireland maybe. For some time I was obsessed with the Scottish accent..." Fading off, you still looked at him, trying to ignore the way the relief in his eyes pulled at your heart. "Scottish?!" He tried to downplay his relief. "How dare you!" "I mean, I met you, so now I'm quite fond of your accent..." Both of you were silent for a second. "You know, you don't have to give up your own life just to make me happy, right? I love you too, and seeing you seemingly always cutting back...I don't want that. I want you to be happy too, baby." He looked you deep in the eyes. "I know. But I would do and give up anything for you, without hesitation." "And I love you for that, Ben. The thing is: you don't have to, because I would do that too." He pulled you closer, hiding his face in your hair. You could almost feel his emotions. "What about a small house in the British Countryside?" Was all he said after a couple minutes. "I'd love that, sweetheart." Kissing him and putting your head on his chest you started to fall asleep, imagining yourself running through the grass behind your future house, him trying to catch you, maybe a dog nearly making you fall, laughter echoing all over the field while the sun was going down. The last thing you heard before succumbing to sleep was Ben's silent "Goodnight, love."

Welcome to another installment of random RRCAU fic, from the big, big universe that lives on the Ruby Lucas Harem Discord, because konako got that one random ask that time. (ask us about the insane College AU now, I dare you, we have answers you don’t even want)
So, if you follow that, have another scene. But this one is, heavy, because it’s all about the big dramatic death around the end of the second year. konako made me cry with the short snippet, so I will now repay that favor with the aftermath in a bit of a long form.
(this is towards the end of Ruby’s sophomore year at college, Granny has just died)
Ruby felt numb. If she could even call it feeling. But it’s either this or crying. And this is more helpful to get through tasks on auto-pilot. Sometimes there was the anger, now like an old friend. But it’s snapping at her friends, pounding the sandbag at the gym, running like mad on the field (Coach is a human after all, didn’t even make her do laps after clearly running the wrong plays). The last few days were a hazy blur. Food, hugging, a bit of sport, people, asking for an assignment extension.
And the phone call with Anita.
She was numb during that, too. And it was for the best. They both knew Granny wanted to be cremated. Just like her husband. But Ruby knew that she also wanted her ashes to be scattered like his. And Anita had said no. She had made arrangements for the urn to be buried. A small service and a burial. Ruby had said she’d be there.
“Whatever.”
A response Ruby knew well.
Regina and Mary Margaret had brought her to the airport. She was using up Regina’s miles again. But she didn’t argue. When she landed she thought she’d get herself to the trailer park somehow, maybe a car rental. Ruby hadn’t thought about that. There was something though. And yes, there was, Mary Margaret had told her - Eva was already waiting at the exit.
Another hug. Long. Warm. Welcoming. It brought Ruby out of the haze a bit, so new tears fell. Tears for Granny. Dead. The last bit of happy memories tied to that place her mind kept insisting on calling home.
“... you can sleep in Mary’s room and I’ll take you to the airport day after tomorrow of course.” Eva already had it planned out, telling her in the car. “Ruby? Is that all okay with you?” Ruby tore off her gaze from the scenery outside, pulling her head away from the glass of the passenger’s window.
“Can we go to the Terrace?” Suddenly the name sounded hollow. “I’d like to get a couple of things.” Maybe she would be too late. Maybe Anita had thrown everything out already.
“Right away?”
“If you don’t mind, please.”
“Of course not, honey.” Eva held the steering wheel with her left hand and put her right on Ruby’s knee, squeezing. Comfort. Reassurance. “Tell me what I can do and consider it done.”
The hint of a smile pulled on the corners of Ruby’s mouth. This was Eva. This had always been Eva, even when she didn’t understand it. She got things done for her.
Pulling up at the trailer park felt strange. For one it was because Ruby was sitting in a nice car. Not rushing through the side entrance on her bike. It was also because Ruby could count the times she’d been here in the almost past two years and every time she got away from it, the place seemed smaller and further away. But mostly, without Granny this was just a glorified parking lot with a bit of green.
Eva parked and waited. Ruby unfastened her seat-belt, but she couldn’t get out. She looked over. Ruby didn’t know if she wanted to go in alone. If she could. Was it better to have Eva there as back-up? Or was that disrespectful?
“I… would you… can you maybe come with me? I don’t know if…” She didn’t know if she could even step a foot inside or would crumble at the front door the way she had days ago in front of her dorm.
“I’m right behind you.” Eva smiled. The warm mom-smile.
Ruby didn’t know if Anita would be here now. She didn’t bother knocking though and didn’t need a key. Nobody needed a key to get in, when you knew the lock wasn’t working properly and all you needed to do was lift the front door at the right angle and push hard.
Ruby opened her mouth, but closed it immediately to not say hallo into the void. Everything looked mostly as expected. There were a few empty alcohol bottles stacked next to the kitchen sink, Anita had been digging in. But she still got herself together to not let them lie around. Maybe that was good. Maybe that was something to care about.
Suddenly her home - the trailer - looked depressing. More than usual. Granny wasn’t sitting outside or lying in bed. The tiny tv was not running. That specific background noise missing was a big deal. Sure, Granny had been in and out of the hospital, but the finality was felt.
Ruby breathed in, the hitch alerted Eva and she touched her on her back, steadied her. The smell. Oh the smell was home. The mix of the cheap laundry detergent, the sharp air freshener, the lingering scent of Granny mixed with Anita’s aggressive perfume. It smelt a bit different than she remembered, but that was probably herself missing from this equation for a long time now.
Slowly Ruby stepped towards the bedroom. The smell of Granny got stronger. Without thinking about it she sat down on the bed. The linens crisp and clean, waiting for someone to sleep here again. There were pills on the nightstand. The little tub with daily doses already in order. Ruby picked it up. Monday and Tuesday were empty, she looked at Wednesday and the morning was missing. Right, after that Granny had called an ambulance. Thursday’s pills were untouched. Thursday had been the last time she had seen her. Ever.
Anita hadn’t touched anything in here as far as Ruby could tell. It was a surprise. Maybe she didn’t know what to do with all the stuff. And maybe, just maybe, there was more emotional baggage inside of her and she couldn’t let go of her mother. She had never left either. She could have. She could have let Granny rot alone in here and not just disappear a few days at a time, but forever. And yet Anita had always come back. Despite everything.
Ruby put the pill box back down and grabbed the framed photo. It was Granny’s wedding picture. She had never stopped loving that man that barely had time to get to know his own daughter and who never knew that his memory lived in a granddaughter he never met at all. They were a handsome couple. This was one of three pictures she knew she wanted above all else.
Her hand was already under the bed, searching the shoe box stashed there. Yes. She opened it and was greeted with all the letters she had sent home the last two years. It felt like so little, but she knew it had meant much. Granny had taken the photos from some of these out and put them on the wall next to the tv. But the pictures Ruby was searching were underneath it all.
An old black and white photograph. More brownish actually, genuine sepia, grainy, worn on the edges. It was Granny as a child with her three older brothers. It was the only thing Ruby knew of, that even proved they once had been alive. Before that fateful accident. Three brothers and their father, all gone in one go.
This family was cursed. Mothers and daughters left. And Granny’s mother hadn’t made it much longer on her own. Maybe Granny and Ruby got along, because they skipped a generation between. Mothers and daughters gave each other plenty of resentment.
And then there was the third picture. Granny with her dear husband and a fancy new car. The red Camaro had been out of their price range, but on their anniversary they had gone to the dealership, got a long test drive out of it and made that a date. Granny had talked about that day a lot. Grandfather promised them a brighter future where they would be able to afford a car like that. Not just stealing fake moments, but creating happy ones for real.
That had never happened.
Granny had deserved more and yet life had rejected her. But she had held on. Despite her heart condition, the many losses of family members around her, the slipping into poverty. Granny had always held on. For over 80 years. Nobody had thought that would even be possible. So maybe it was okay to say goodbye now. Now that Ruby understood how Granny could look at a picture of her dead husband for hours and feel nothing but love.
Ruby put the frame into the shoe box, then her gaze fell onto the chair. Granny’s knitted cardigan hung over the back. She’d always worn that grey monstrosity, though it was unflattering even on her. Ruby got to her feet and picked it up. She buried her face in the fabric. Granny. Yes, she wanted this. The pictures, her own letters, the cardigan. It meant something.
Tears began to fall again. Ruby wasn’t numb at all. Breathing in all the memories came rushing back. Sitting on Granny’s lap during Christmas story time; teaching her the sacred lasagna recipe; listening to unimportant happenings at school; the encouraging words when Anita’s indifference turned into vile insults; daydreaming of long trips with fingers on the maps of an old atlas; sitting in front of Granny’s bed, eating something from the microwave and letting Granny catch her up on her soaps. There had been love.
Eva had been silent all this time and given Ruby space. Now she stepped closer and wrapped her up in her arms. Ruby hugged the cardigan and felt Eva kissing her on the head. This was goodbye. But she wouldn’t be alone.
The service was lovely, but what really got to Ruby was seeing people attending. She had thought she’d be there alone with Anita, maybe Eva in the back. But there were a few neighbors. Mrs. Johnson even gave her a quick hug, she had come by like once a month to do Granny’s hair for free, but really it was about the conversation. Nurse Wilcox had retired herself three years ago, but before she had worked at the doctor’s office Granny got her subscriptions from. She had seen the tiny ad in the paper and wanted to pay her respects, remembering one of her favourite patients.
A part of Ruby wanted to scream, because she knew burying the urn in the dirt was wrong. Even though Anita had picked a nice little headstone. Ruby knew this was money she couldn’t really afford to spend. But causing a scene in the cemetery was the last thing she would do. She’d rather run away and not attend at all, while more than a dozen people paid their respects.
There wasn’t much said between Ruby and Anita. Who cared about one more argument and hollow questions about their current living situations? Ruby would remember the way Eva kept holding her hand, let her ramble through incoherent memories and tugged her into Mary’s bed. (Something Ruby rejected by getting up at night to sleep in the treehouse, the cardigan close to her chest.)
And when summer came around, Ruby would clean a whole week out of her schedule. No summer class, no work, not anybody around. Maybe it was irresponsible to blow through a portion of her savings, but she found a car rental that could get her that red 1975 Chevrolet Camaro. And maybe it was called grave robbing, but she dug up Granny’s urn and put her on the passenger’s seat. A week on the road right up to the beach where Granny had scattered her husband’s ashes.
That would be Ruby’s last goodbye. When she finally could let go of the woman, who had mostly raised her. The road trip they had talked about in giggling voices.
Turning into the parking lot was hard. And just when Ruby doubted she could scatter these ashes alone, she spotted Regina waiting for her. She had send so many texts to her friends and called to let them know she was okay, that Regina knew when she would arrive at her destination. Regina, who had been there when Ruby had last spoken to Granny. Fitting. Granny’s final blessing.

Sneak Peek
I don’t have a new chapter for this week (natural disasters and all that) but I do have this excerpt from my upcoming new fic Stop The World (And Melt With You), which will start posting after The Department concludes.  It’s a Tom Hiddleston/OFC/Hozier fic centered in the music industry and revolving around rival artist managers that used to be married years ago, but split up due to the pressures of their respective careers and a scandal neither of them has ever quite come to terms with.
After successfully avoiding each other for the better part of a decade following their messy divorce, Thomas Casey and Kinsie O’Dell suddenly and unhappily find themselves having to work together again when their clients, who were likewise a couple in the past, start an artistic collaboration at the behest of their record labels.
Jaimie is a wild Irish rockstar with a laundry list of bad habits, Arielle is an Italian pop diva with the attitude and spoiled entitlement of a rabid chihuahua.  Before either of them was famous they were a couple, but a vicious split sent them in opposite directions, fighting endlessly over music they wrote while they were together.  Now that they’re both big names in the industry, the battle over rights to their old work is raging.  And the public loves it.  So when their record labels insist on a studio collaboration followed by a world tour as a duo, Jaimie and Arielle start to fall back in love...much to the absolute horror of their managers.
Thomas and Kinsie have no choice but to keep doing their jobs, babysitting the hot blooded youngsters while they reattach to each other and doing their best to avoid the same fate themselves.  Will they manage to keep their distance from each other despite long nights on the tour bus, endless hotel rooms, and being in each other’s faces nonstop for the better part of a year while their young charges croon about love and passion on stage in a new city every night?  Will their past be a protective lesson to them, or will the memory of the good times override their common sense and good judgement?
Moving forward using all my breath Making love to you was never second best I saw the world crashing all around your face
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
- Modern English, 1982
***************************************************************
"We were good.  For a long while there, we were real damn good, weren't we babe."
"Eh, it depends on what your definition of good is."  I gave him a sideways glance, careful to avoid those hot blue eyes that I could feel boring into my face.  That was the only way I’d ever been able to accurately describe the way he looked at people - bored, as in drove his gaze straight through them, leaving devastation in the wake of that billion dollar stare.  "But yeah, we were pretty good.  Until you cheated."
He sat back with a loud huff and a grimly muttered Here we go as he raked his hands through his hair.  It was shaggy again, making him look more like the music industry road-managerial type he was on the surface and less of the sophisticated gentleman I knew he was underneath it.  "How many times do we have to go through this?  I never cheated on you and you know it."
"Oh sorry, I meant to say Until the allegations that you cheated became too convincing to deny a second longer - "
"Oh for fucks sake Kinsie, I never slept with that woman!"
"And I never slept with Jaimie, so I guess we're both innocent."
His eyes went wide, and I swear to god his mouth went slack till it almost fell open.  Misdirection had always been my strong point, and he never in all the years I’d known him had ever learned how to either anticipate or counter it.
"You slept with Jaimie?"
"I just said I didn't, weren't you listening?"
"He's...he's fifteen, no wait he's twenty years younger than you!"
"Good thing I didn't sleep with him then, that would be gross."  I sneaked a peek over the top of my Coke, slurping so that the ice made rude noises.  He always hated that.  The man was all but sputtering with rage, cheeks flushed, eyes bright, hair standing on end where he kept dragging his hands through it roughly.  "Oh come on, I'm just as likely to sleep with Jaimie as you are to sleep with Arielle."
"I don't sleep with Arielle!"
"Good because you'd be in jail if you did."
He didn't say anything else - I knew him well enough to know he'd hit his limit and that his next action would be to get up and storm out of the room, slamming the door dramatically behind him.  He never could beat me in a game of words, not once in twenty years.  It was the thing about me that frustrated him the most.  And making unnecessary noise was his only way to strike back at it.
"Don't bang the door on your way out, Jaimie's asleep next door."
 "Fuck Jaimie!"
I gave him a wink over the top of my cup around another rude slurp.  "I thought we'd established that wasn't an issue of contention."
The level of red in his cheeks was almost alarming.  He stared at me for several more long seconds, then turned and strode purposefully to the door, grabbed the knob, and yanked it open.  He stood there glaring at me from the doorway until I shook my head and sighed.
"Don't you do it, Thomas Casey."
His eyes narrowed, and the look of sheer malicious glee that twisted his lips into a vengeful grin was almost lost to the door slamming shut so hard the framed sunset on the wall across from the bathroom shuddered on its nail.  And then I heard him beating on the door to the room next to mine, just to add insult to injury.
Goddammit.  As much as I loved irritating that man, I hated the long night that was coming even more. In just about thirty seconds my phone was going to ring and my very awake, very hungry charge was going to complain about the noise and ask me to order room service and watch movies with him for the rest of the night.  It never failed.   Jaimie’s insomnia was legendary, as was his ability to eat like a rhino despite resembling not much more than a hairy stop sign.  A familiar impotent rage overtook me and I yanked the door open to step out into the hall and yell at the retreating backside of the man I'd once loved hard enough to marry.
"You better get your goddamned little princess under control, Casey!  Now!!"
He yelled back without turning around.
"Maybe if you'd make your rock star keep his dick in his pants we wouldn't be having this problem!"
"Arielle is a hack!"
"Jaimie's a fucking pothead!"
He turned the corner at the end of the hall, and god help me I waited, half expecting and fully hoping he would pause just long enough for dramatic effect before turning around and coming back.  I wasn't even ashamed of the fact that I planned to push the door open and be on the bed before he even made it.
But he didn't come back, and after several long seconds I realized I was making a fool of myself.  Waiting for Thomas Casey had been my downfall all those years ago and it hurt just a little bit to see myself so willing to do it now, a decade down the road.
Damn him.
The door next room up clicked open and Jaimie stood there in his pajamas, rubbing his eyes and peering down the hall to see what I was looking at.
"Somebody kicked my door."
I looked at him, at his sleepy face with his thick glasses askew in testament to the fact that he'd fallen asleep reading again, and stepped aside so he could go into my room.  "I know baby.  It was just Casey."
His face brightened.  For some stupid reason he liked Casey.  "Yeah?  You two been hanging out?"
"Just business."
"Huh." He shuffled past me into the room, making himself comfortable on my kingsize before the door even fell shut behind me, already clicking through the channels on the TV and helping himself to what was left of my Coke.  "You two were good together, you should try to get along."
Good together. That was the second time I'd heard those words come from someone's mouth tonight in reference to me and Thomas Casey, and it was just about two times too many.  I sat down on the edge of the bed with a tragic sigh.
"Scoot over sweetie.”

Recap/review 15.20: “Carry On”
I’ll warn you right now - I did not hate it.
THEN: Chuck loses. Jack is God. The Winchesters are finally free.
NOW: Friends, get ready for a whole lot of fan service in the next few minutes. It's like TPTB have been reading everything we say and giving us what we want.
As a song about "ordinary life" plays, Dean's retro alarm clock goes off at 8:00. He shuts it off and sits up so we can see he's wearing a henley shirt (fan service points: 1). As he stretches, he's greeted by Miracle the dog (fan service points: 2)! Who is apparently his dog and definitely not Sam's!
Tumblr media
But it's okay because LOOK AT THEM.
Meanwhile, Sam is running (fan service points: 3) and enjoying the beautiful day. When he gets home, he cooks (fan service points: 4) the same dry scrambled eggs that Stevie made for Charlie. Dean wanders in, wearing the dead guy robe, just as two slices of toast pop out of the toaster. I am not giving the robe any points because I don't think it's anything we all publicly long for and get excited about when it comes up, but I am willing to consider any opposing arguments. Sam, wearing just a t-shirt (5 points), tells Dean "it's hot" and I say mmm, yes it is. Dean adorably burns his hands on the hot toast and then brushes his teeth. You know what, I think the robe deserves a point after all. We're up to 6.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we're not even two minutes into the episode.
And then they JUST KEEP COMING because Sam walks in, exposing his tattoo (7) because he's SHIRTLESS (8), scrubbing at his WET HAIR (9) with a towel, and I curse The Husband for deciding to watch with me because it means it would be kind of awkward to rewind and watch this a few more times. There's not even any dialog I can pretend I didn't catch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was NOT PREPARED FOR THIS.
He pulls on the grey v-neck t-shirt of sex (10) and proceeds to carefully make his bed. Dean, meanwhile, kind of sloppily throws his bed together and calls it done. Domestic Winchesters for 11 fan service points, please. Part of me feels like Dean's messy room is OOC, considering how proud he was to have his own room in the first place. But then I have to consider the trunk of the Impala, especially when compared to the hyper-organized neatness of her trunk when Sam's all alone in Mystery Spot, and it feels right. (Why am I thinking about Sam being all alone in Mystery Spot? NO REASON, NO REASON AT ALL.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sam's hair in his face while he makes his bed? Yes, please (12 points).
Dean washes the breakfast dishes (13), sneaking some leftover (because they were nasty) eggs to Miracle and looking around to make sure Sam doesn't see, because obviously Sam's going to be the one who doesn't want the dog to get table scraps. Sam put on a plaid shirt earlier, but we see him in the laundry room back down to one v-neck t-shirt (thank you Jack). He's reading as his laundry tumbles in the dryer, and he has to kick the dryer once to stop it from making noise, which I guess is why he's in there babysitting it. I keep reading on Tumblr that people want "at least one laundry scene," as if that didn't exist in The Monster at the End of This Book, but here's your laundry scene, friends. You were right to want it; it is marvelous (14).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just look at that collection of plaid shirts and tell me it doesn't make you happy.
Dean times himself assembling a gun, complete with plenty of hand closeups (15) and then sits in the library with Miracle, scratching his ears (Miracle's, not his own) and apparently looking for a case. Sam comes in and joins them. He hasn't found anything, but Dean gets a serious look on his face and says "I got something."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spoiler alert: It is my heart.
Title card!
The Impala pulls to a stop and the guys get out, still with serious looks on their faces. Oddly, the episode title flashes on screen really quickly. Or maybe it's just me. "Sure you're ready for this?" says Sam. "Oh, I don't have a choice," answers Dean. "This is my destiny." And that is exactly how I felt about watching this episode, friends. Not ready, but no choice. The camera pans to show that the boys are at the 43rd Annual Akron Pie Fest. In Akron, Iowa? Just north of Sioux City? Five hour drive? Say hi to Jody and the girls while you're there? Probably not. Probably in Akron, Ohio, almost 16 hours away.
(NO ONE CARES. STOP IT.)
Give me a break. This might be the last time I ever get to calculate driving time.
Anyway. Just pies! Nothing serious! Whew, I was concerned for a second. Dean is emotional.
This is just so beautiful.
Are you crying?
What? No. You're crying, I'm not.
Tumblr media
No one is crying. There is no reason for ANYONE to cry.
Sam sits on a bench and watches happy pie eating families (sob). Dean returns with a giant box with six slices of pie (16 points). He sits next to Sam, and they have this conversation:
What's wrong?
Nothing. I'm fine.
Nah, come on, I know that face. That's Sad!Sam face.
I'm not Sad!Sam. I just. I'm thinking about Cas, you know? Jack. If they could be here.
Yeah, I know, I think about them too. You know what, that pain's not gonna go away, right? But if we don't keep living, then all that sacrifice is going to be for nothing.
Dean's right, Sam. Do not be sad. We will have no Sad!Sam tonight. Live your life, or else those sacrifices are wasted. (ahem.) Sam responds by pushing a slice of pumpkin pie into Dean's face. "I've wanted to do that for a very long time," he laughs. "You're right, I do feel better!" Dean scraping the pie off his face and eating it is pretty adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd pay good money to lick that off his face. And not just because I love pumpkin pie.
Not quite 6 minutes in and we're up to at least 16 guaranteed bits of pure fan service. Just sweet, domestic Winchester brothers living their lives. How long has this been going on? I've decided it's been at least a year since the last episode. Maybe longer. A good long time. Lots of time for them to enjoy their newfound freedom. But right now things are getting dark. Because it's nighttime, and because I think somebody's about to die.
A mom sends two young brothers upstairs for bathtime. They pause when the doorbell rings. No one seems to be there, but then the dad is stabbed by people wearing creepy masks. The boys run into their room and hide. From their room, we hear the mom scream, and then a thump. One of the masked guys comes into the room and, after a fake-out when we think they might be safe, drags the boys out from under the bed.
So, domestic life in the bunker and then a hunt? Wow. We're getting it all. What a great episode, full of the things we love.
Tumblr media
Is this Becky Rosen's living room?
Daytime. Agents Kripke and Singer (ugh, really? Kripke is good, but how about honoring someone other than the current regime?) show up at the scene. They learn that the dad's blood was drained, the mom is alive but her tongue was ripped out (wow), and the kids were taken. The mom drew a picture of the masks they wore, which the brothers recognize.
In a lovely, picturesque spot, the guys flip through John's journal. And I didn't realize we hadn't seen the journal in a while, but Tumblr informs me many of us were exicted to see it again, so boom. 17 points.
You know what this is? Mimes. Evil mimes.
Yeah. Or vampires.
VampMIMES. Son of a bitch!
Dean comes up with a silly portmanteau name for a monster? That will be 18 points. Sam determines the vamps will be heading for Canton if they follow their pattern, and the victims are families who live on the outskirts of town with children between the ages of five and ten. Well, that couldn't be too difficult to narrow down in a city with a population of over 70,000.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll handwave it. The lip biting. You’re welcome.
Night. Canton, I presume. Two masked vamps get out of a van. One of them gets decapitated by Dean. The other is shot in the leg, and then the head, by Sam. Well, he's a vampire, so of course it didn't kill him, but the bullet was soaked in dead man's blood. {Sidebar: "Soaked?" Dipped, maybe, but do you soak metal? Discuss.} They ask where the missing kids are, and the vamp is all, you're gonna let me go if I tell you? "No," Dean explains, adorably disappointed that the vamp isn't a mime after all. "This isn't a you walk out of here kind of situation. But see, if you tell us quick, you get this." He displays his bloody machete. "But if you take your time, you get, you get that." And "that" is a switchblade which Sam casually pops open right on cue.
Yeah, I'll take that. I'll take that itty bitty one.
It's a bad choice.
You see, this, this is quick. It's clean, you know? No muss, no fuss. You blink and you're dead.
But a blade this small, I'm gonna have to keep sawing and sawing to get your head off. And you'll feel it. Every muscle, tendon. Every inch. Could take hours.
Oh, and if those kids are dead? He's gonna use a spoon.
GUYS. I said it before and I’ll say it again. I absolutely love when they remind us that Sam Winchester, that sweet boy with the huge heart and the endless supply of empathy and the puppy dog eyes, I love it when they remind us that he is a fucking psycho when he needs to be. I'm not going to give it a point, because I don't think it's anything we've asked for, but again I'm willing to hear all arguments. Especially if they come with detailed examples of Sam going psycho. Just for evidence, you know.

Just casually talkin' bout torturing you to death. No big.
The vampire wisely decides to reveal the location of the nest where the kids are being held. Next we see the Impala pulling up in front of some kind of barn. The guys open the trunk to get their gear out, and Dean pulls out a throwing star. "Come on. One time." Sam says no. There will be plenty of other times for Dean to use his throwing stars, I'm sure.
The guys enter the barn and find it apparently empty, although we see masked vamps peeking at them from outside. They find the kids locked in a closet, but four vampires appear before they can escape. They shoo the boys outside and shoot the vampires with their dead man's blood bullets from a safe distance. No, they don't. Why? I got no goddamn idea.
{Sidebar: At some point during this fight, I realized they hadn't played "Carry On Wayward Son" at the beginning. And that we got a regular montage, not a season finale extended montage.}
Sam gets knocked unconscious, and Dean loses his machete and then gets pinned by a couple of vamps. But they don't kill him; they just hold him down while an unmasked vampire strolls in. Dean recognizes her from season 1, and pretends not to notice Sam's now-conscious hand surreptitiously creeping toward his machete. Suddenly the vampire loses her head, because Sam is behind her, and the fight starts up again. Dean gets thrown into a wall right next to a big metal spike, which we focus on oddly. And then he gets thrown onto the spike. Oops. Sam kills the last of the vamps and doesn't notice Dean's predicament. He's all, cool, fight's over, let's go get those kids out of here. "Sam," Dean says, "I don't think I'm going anywhere."
Dean tells Sam there's something stuck in his back and it "feels like it's right through me." He keeps touching his chest as if he expects to feel it poking through. Sam reaches around to touch his back and his hand comes back bloody, and if that gives you All Hell Breaks Loose feels, there's a good reason. Sam tries to pull Dean off the spike, but Dean stops him. "It feels like this thing's holding me together right now." Sam's starting to panic and so am I. He wants to go get the first aid kid and call for help, but Dean stops him. And y'all, I'm just gonna have to type the whole thing out.
Sam, Sam. Stay with me. Please, stay with me, please.
Okay. Yeah.
Okay. Okay. Uh. Right. All right, listen to me. Um. You get those boys and you get them someplace safe, all right?
Dean? WE are gonna get them somewhere safe.
No. You knew it was always gonna end like this for me. It was supposed to end like this, right? I mean, look at us. Saving people, hunting things, it's what we do.
Stop, Dean, just stop
It's okay. It's okay. it's good. It's good. We had one hell of a ride, man.
I will find away, okay? I will find another way.
No. No. No, no no no no. No bringing me back, okay? You know that always ends bad.
Dean, please.
I'm fading pretty quick, so, there's a few things I need you to hear. Come here. Let me look at you. There he is. I am so proud of you, Sam. You know that? I've always looked up to you. Remember when we were kids, you were so damn smart. You never took any of Dad's crap. I never knew how you did that. And you're stronger than me. You always have been. Hey, did I ever tell you, that night that I came for you when you were in school? You know, when dad hadn't come back from his hunting trip?
Uh, the woman in white.
The woman in white, that's right. I must have stood outside your door for hours, cause I didn't know what you would say. I thought you'd tell me to get lost, or get dead. And I didn't know what I would have done if I didn't have you. Cause I was so scared. I was scared. Cause when it all came down to it, it was always you and me. It's always been you and me.
Then don't leave me. Don't leave me. I can't do this alone.
Yes you can.
Well, I don't want to.
Hey. I'm not leaving you. I'm gonna be with you. Right here. Every day. Every day you're out there, and you're living, and you're fighting, cause you, you always keep fighting. You hear me? I'll be there, every step. I love you so much. My baby brother. Well, I did not think this would be the day. But it is, it is, and that's okay. I need you, I need you to promise me. I need you to tell me that it's okay. I need you to tell me it's okay. Look at me. I need. I need. I need you to tell me it's okay. Tell me it's okay.
Dean. It's okay. You can go now.
Bye, Sam.
NO, IT IS NOT OKAY. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF OKAY.
And of course I haven't described Sam's face as he understands what's happening, Dean's occasional spasms of pain, the handholding, the fucking FOREHEAD TOUCH, the tears, the way Dean's hand drops away, the way Sam's hands shake as he clutches his dead brother (hello, AHBL again).
Maybe we just need to watch it.

And there's also the Always Keep Fighting shoutout, the "I love you," Dean calling Sam his "baby brother," the "I can't do this alone/Yes you can/Well I don't want to" parallel with 1.01. Infinite points, friends. I can't count that high.
(Things not to think about: Sam putting Dean's body in the back seat, and then putting the two young brothers in the front and driving them to safety. Sam driving 15 hours back to Lebanon with his brother's body. Do not think about these things.)
Aftermath. Sam and Miracle, and no one else, are giving Dean a hunter's funeral. And I know Covid means Sam couldn't have any friends there, but also? This is kind of perfect. Sam facing it alone. The song we hear as Sam lights his brother's pyre is "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits, in case you're not emotionally wrecked yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, I'm already there, thanks anyway.
Next we see Sam's slightly more modern alarm going off at 8:00. Note that Sam gets up later now, because at the beginning of the episode, he had already gone for a run and was cooking breakfast when Dean woke at 8:00. But now there's no one to cook for so he doesn't need to get back early and I AM NOT OKAY.
ANYWAY.
Sam gets up and faces his lonely day. He cooks eggs. One piece of toast pops up. He sits in the library with Miracle and looks at the names carved into the table. He wanders the halls with his dog at his side. (SAM HAVING A DOG WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE HIM HAPPY. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE US HAPPY. HOW DARE YOU.)
{Sidebar: Has Sam ever had a dog when he wasn't at a low point in his already-low life? Discuss.}
Eventually he finds himself at the door to Dean's room. The room is just as Dean left it, kind of messy, kind of very full of Dean. He sits on Dean's bed and pets the dog and cries and it should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that I am ROLLING AROUND IN ALL OF THIS BEAUTIFUL PAIN.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one at all.
@annianvi thinks he’s wearing Dean’s hoodie when he cooks his sad lonely breakfast? Could it be?
Sam hears a phone buzzing in Dean's desk. He digs out the one labeled "Dean's other other phone" and answers. The caller asks for "Agent Bon Jovi" and says he's had some bodies turn up without hearts in Austin. "A friend of mine, Donna Hanscum, said you were the one to call." Oooh, are we sending him to Austin? Is Walker, Texas Ranger just going to be another fake name and fake badge? Now that's how you do a spinoff!
{Sidebar: Does Donna know about Dean? Did Sam tell anyone yet? Is the trying to get him out of the bunker and keep him busy? If so, wouldn't she have given the guy Sam's number, not Dean's other other phone? But maybe it's someone she talked to weeks ago. Discuss.}
Sam tells the caller he is on his way, and we see him with a packed bag, heading out of the bunker with Miracle. He turns to look one last time and then turns off all the lights. We haven't seen the bunker this dark since the day they found it. I don't think he's ever coming back. Goodbye, bunker. I know some people hated you, but I was not one of them. {Sidebar: Did he give the bunker key to anyone? Surely he wouldn't want all those resources to go to waste!}
So, I guess the episode title refers to Sam having (choosing?) to carry on after he loses his brother. THIS IS FINE.
Now we're back at Dean's pyre, and this time we drift up with the smoke. We catch up with Dean, outdoors, in a lovely setting with trees and birds. "Well, at least I made it to Heaven," he says. "Yep," someone answers. It's Bobby! Real Bobby, not AU Bobby! Dean's actually standing next to a building - a cabin, maybe - and Bobby is sitting on the porch.
What memory is this?
It ain't, ya idjit.
Yeah it is. Cause the last I heard, you, you were in in Heaven's lockup.
Was. Now I'm not. That kid of yours, before he went wherever, made some changes here. Busted my ass out. And then he, well, set some things right. Tore down all the walls. Heaven ain't just reliving your golden oldies any more. It's what it always should have been. Everyone happy, everyone together. Rufus lives about five miles that way. With Aretha. Thought she'd have better taste. And your mom and dad, they got a place over yonder. It ain't just Heaven, Dean. It's the Heaven you deserve. And we been waiting for you.
So Jack did all that.
Well, Cas helped. It's a big new world out there. You'll see.
So, I guess Cas made it out of the Empty? Dean smiles at that, but doesn't suggest finding him or anything. I approve. Bobby pulls out a couple of beers (the green cooler made it into Heaven!!!) and they share some bad beer. Dean comments that Heaven is "almost perfect," and Bobby knows EXACTLY what's missing, because of course he does. "He'll be along. Time up here, it's different. You got everything you could ever want, or need, or dream. So I guess the question is, what are you gonna do now, Dean?" Well, Dean doesn't have everything he could ever want or need, but he does see one thing - Baby. With her Kansas plates! Friends, that's two things I requested before the end that I didn't think I would ever see: a forehead touch, and Baby wearing her original plates. Thank you, Jack.
Dean's face lights up. "I think I'll go for a drive." As he walks to his car, we see the cabin is actually Harvelle's Roadhouse, albeit smaller, I think. Dean settles into his car and says "Hey, Baby" and when he turns her on, "Carry On Wayward Son" begins to play.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know he looks good in Purgatory, but DAMN if he don't look fine in Heaven, too.
We cut to the name Dean, which is embroidered on - a little boy's overalls. Sam's little boy. Oh, wow. I was not prepared for this. Sam has a son named Dean, and we switch back and forth between Dean driving through Heaven and scenes of Sam's life with his son and his mysterious, barely-seen wife. She has long dark hair, and I'd like to point out that she could easily be either Eileen or Dr. Cara Roberts. Just saying. Sam's house is full of family photos, including the one of him and Dean from his memory box and a new one from the episode Lebanon. I never thought about the fact that they might have actually taken a photo, and if they did, would it still be around after Sam smashed the pearl? Well, obviously, yes. We see Sam throwing a ball with his son, helping him with his homework (Sam in glasses? Check!) and just obviously really loving this kid and giving him the childhood he never had. We also see a really, really unfortunate grey wig that I refuse to screencap. You're welcome. As aging Sam sits in the hundred-year-old car in his garage, his dead brother drives happily along dirt roads in Heaven, and I'd prefer my Heaven have paved roads, thanks.
We end in Sam's house, now complete with hospital bed. Sam could be in his 80s or even 90s, which means he could have lived another 50 years, more or less, after Dean died. His son doesn't look any older than his 20s or 30s (and also looks vaguely South Asian to me), and I wonder how old Sam was when he finally let himself have a family. Remember when Dean said his happy ending was for Sam to have kids and get old? Well, he got it, finally. Did Sam get a regular job? Did he keep hunting? We don't know. What we do know is that his son has a anti-possession tattoo. Some people have taken this to mean young Dean is a hunter, but I don't think we can jump to that conclusion. It could just be 1) Dean wanted a tattoo like his father's, or b) Sam knows there are still demons out there and that his son would naturally be a target, hunter or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All right, I had to screencap teary-eyed Sam grasping the steering wheel and reliving his years with his brother in this car, so we can just pretend we don't see The Wig, okay?
Sam's evidently in hospice care. Or maybe we'll all have hospital beds in our houses in 50 years. Who knows. His son sits on the bed and takes his hand. Sam smiles at him, and Dean says "Dad, it's okay. You can go now." PARALLELLS! As some woman sings "Carry On Wayward Son" for whatever reason (why didn't they use the lovely a cappella version they already had from Fan Fiction?), Sam places his hand on Dean's and takes his last breath.
{Sidebar: Where is Sam's wife in all of this? Divorced? Already dead? She doesn't seem to be in the family pictures, so I'm going with divorced. Discuss.}
Heaven. Oh, guys. I've done this rewatch without tearing up at all but I'm about to tip over. The Impala pulls onto a bridge. Dean gets out. (Now your life's no longer empty, surely Heaven waits for you.) He stands at the bridge railing, enjoying Heaven, smiling. And then he feels something and he smiles even more because he knows it's Sam. Oh god, Jensen did such a good job here. Just this fucking smile killed me dead. "Hey, Sammy," he says. He turns and there is Sam, wearing the same outfit he wore in 1.01 (they both are, but Sam's is a bigger departure from his later years). Why? I don't know. But I know it means Sam Winchester is spending eternity in something that isn't a plaid shirt. How do we feel about that?
"Dean," Sam says. They face each other and smile, and it's the smile of we just survived a hunt I didn't think we'd survive or our son just overpowered God or something along those lines. Then they embrace, and I love the way Sam hesitates just a little before clapping a hand on Dean's back. Like he's afraid it isn't really happening, and he doesn't want to break the illusion. I also love that Dean, as always, takes the top (oh, get your minds out of the gutter) and hugs as if he were taller than Sam. Then Dean puts his hand on the back of Sam's neck and turns him to admire the view and he has this joyous smile like now, this is FINALLY Heaven. And he gazes at Sam like look, Sammy, look what we did. Look what we get. The lack of dialog in this scene is just ~chef's kiss~. The camera goes wide and we see the three main characters, Sam and Dean and Baby, enjoying the Heaven they deserve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to know where they filmed this, because it's gorgeous even without the Winchesters.
Did Sam's entire life go by in the span of Dean's drive? Or did Dean just decide he'd drive until his brother arrived, no matter how long it took? And how much do I love the fact that he could have gone and visited his parents but instead he said "nah, I'll drive around and wait for Sam?" SO MUCH, PEOPLE. SO MUCH.
Also, can we talk about the fact that Sam didn't know what to expect in Heaven? I mean, Ash said they were soulmates and would share a Heaven, but why would he believe that? And he might have even still believed he'd have a hard time getting into Heaven. What a relief it must have been to show up on Dean's bridge.
And then Jared and Jensen thank us. You're welcome, boys. Thank you.
So. Thursday night I was mildly positive about the episode. But on rewatch, I'm extremely positive. Sure, I would have loved the Six Feet Under ending where we see everyone's fate. And maybe that would have happened if not for Covid. But I'm just relieved we didn't get the Game of Thrones or How I Met Your Mother endings. I'm not sure this current cohort could have done better, honestly. Sam wanted a normal family life. Dean wanted Sam to have a normal family life. But Sam was never going to stop hunting as long as Dean was hunting. And Dean wasn't going to stop hunting as long as he was alive. Dean got the end he wanted/expected and the Heaven he earned (and Sam caring for Jack was directly responsible for Heaven's improvements). Sam got to live a normal life and have a family. As I said earlier, I suspect his marriage didn't last. (Or maybe he and Eileen or Cara got married for insurance purposes, and happily co-parented little Dean, but knew they weren't each other's one true love.) But I actually prefer that. Dean loved Sam more than he loved anyone. Sam loved Dean the same way. I'm glad Sam got to have a child (who he loves as much as his brother, but in a different way), but I don't want Sam and Dean to share their Heaven with Sam's wife.
Now, would I have done Dean's death differently? Yes. I did appreciate that they had him upright, so the brothers were face to face, just like AHBL. But being impaled on a spike was just less dramatic that I would have liked. I would have preferred that Sam immediately see his brother was dying, instead of Dean having to explain it to him. Dean could have had his jugular torn, slowly bleeding out, and still been on his knees (held up by Sam, hell yes) making his deathbed speech. And then I wouldn't have thought "would an ambulance be here by now if you'd called them?" halfway through it.
{Sidebar: What if Sam had fed Dean some blood from one of the dead vamps. Wouldn't that have kept him undead long enough to get fixed up, and then they could have done the vampire cure? Discuss.}
I know some people are very unhappy about the finale. Honestly, from what I can tell, most of those people are hard-core Destiel shippers. And I guess they wanted, as they always do, for the Dean and Castiel relationship to be more important than the Dean and Sam relationship. Sorry, guys, that was never gonna happen. In the end, it came down to the epic love story of Sam and Dean, just as it should have.
Tumblr media
So, I'm sad and I'm happy. I'm bereft and I'm full. I miss my boys, but my boys will always be with me. I hope you guys will be with me for a long time, too.

Spending my morning on Jason’s couch wasn’t the plan, but the break was almost too sweet to give up. I sat up, reaching over for my turned-off phone. I could hear muffled talking coming from down the hall. I looked over, seeing Jason holding a laundry basket, his phone pressed between his face and shoulder and he came into the living room.  I grabbed his laptop off the chair just in time for him to sit on the said chair. He dropped the laundry basket on the floor and got a better hold of the phone.
I reached over to get Jason’s laptop off the coffee table. I opened his laptop and began looking up a few things.
“Listen, we had a plan for the character model! I understand when you program something, something else can mess up but it’s YOUR JOB to fix it! I’ll extend the deadline but that’s it, good-bye!” Jason hung up with a groan.
“I haven’t even had my damn morning coffee yet and these people are going insane.” He grumbled, beginning to sort through his laundry.
“Yeah, sorry about that, but it needs to happen,” I muttered, still researching.
“So your plan is to what? Get Jill’s help but keep the company anyway? How will that work? I get you ARE the owner, but she now has the upper hand to destroy you…” Jason trailed off, folding a pair of pants.
I scoffed, “She THINKS she can destroy me, but if she helps me avoid punishment and makes her lawyers paint a pretty picture as truth, then she’ll HAVE to run with it. If she turns on me and says it was all a lie and I’m a criminal, then she is too, then she gets nothing either. The only one with us listening to the WHOLE conversation was my nephew and no one will take his word because he still thinks Santa Claus can come through the furnace vents in their modern home. ”
“He’s really are losing his mind oh my God.” He mumbled to himself, trying to seem interested in his laundry.
“I love my sister, I really do, but last night… She showed me that she would sacrifice everything if it meant keeping the company and her status. She doesn’t care what I want and isn’t doing this out of the kindness of her heart. She’s doing it for my spot. She’s doing it because she doesn’t want to be removed from the high pedestal my father put her on.” I argued, shutting the laptop.
“What about the guys? What if your sister gets access to the bunker?” Jason questioned.
“She won’t. It surprised me when she knew about it, but the location, locks, and layout will be foreign to her because she doesn’t have access to those. I’m assuming she only knows because our accountant slipped up. The only one who knows the location is you and I. The locks are designed by me and you barely even got the keys last month. The layout is only known by twelve people, Jin, Yoongi, Hoseok, RM, Jimin, Taehyung, Jungkook, Seongmi, Linza, Jeonghun, and only you and I REALLY know the layout of the bunker. ”
“I feel as though you being there with them was a bad idea.” Jason shook his head, judgment was written on his face.
I exhaled, leaning back into the couch, “It really was. ”
“Well, If I would’ve known you had so much shit going on I wouldn't have invited you for a night out with Daisuke and me!” Jason threw an article of clothing back into the laundry basket roughly.
“If anything, it’ll get my mind off everything for a few hours,” I stated bitterly.
Jason let out a sigh, almost irritated, “We can’t be teenagers anymore, M/n.” He said, his voice was too serious for my liking.
I rolled my eyes, “Jason, I know. I get so much crap for being uptight. Maybe I should actually live like a 20-year-old CEO.” I smirked.
“Oh God, please no.” Jason made a face, going back to sorting and folding his laundry.
“Yeah, overpriced alcohol and drunk people telling me I’m attractive aren’t really for me.” I chuckled, sitting up to get the laptop again, this time to check my e-mail for work.
I started replying and even turned on my phone.
“Your sister….” Jason began, making me look up.
“…She used to wear really nice things, yes, but she would’ve never done that to her little brother. She loved you too much for that.” He stated sadly, looking at a single shirt like it was able to replay memories.
I frowned, sighing, “It happens to those who are in power enough, Jason. It happened to my brother, then to my older sister. I hope my little sister doesn’t catch that bug. Lord knows my mother is secretly becoming like that as well. I understand it a little bit. There are competitors who want our company forgotten, so we have to protect our image, but for her to ask for my place instead, just…” I trailed off.
“I just hope it’s because she has kids to think about now. My brother just wanted to be on top. Maybe my sister wants it so her kids have an assurance that they’ll have something too.” I reasoned, going back to my e-mail in hopes to end the conversation there.
Jason scoffed, “As if you would ever cast out your nephews. Lord knows you spoil them even if they aren’t yours.” I felt a twinge of pain in my heart.
“I mean what would your father say about your sister getting the company?” Jason prompted.
“…I have that decision for a reason, so let that reason play out.” I muttered, no longer interested in the work I was doing.
We fell into slightly uncomfortable silence.
“Can you take care of the boys and girls? With my dad’s party coming up and setting everything up for the future, I will be busy and my family will expect me to stay by their side. They’ll know something is up if I’m constantly leaving.” I explained, pulling out my phone and turning the screen on.
“Uh sure, I’ll try to work and things from there. Maybe I’ll set up a tent there or something. ” I chuckled at his response.
“Why a tent?” I questioned with a smile.
Jason smiled, letting out a chuckle of his own, “So I can get cellphone service.”
I only shook my head, I was about to open my mouth to speak but the doorbell rang. Jason looked at me puzzled for a bit. I only shrugged, leaning back into the couch. Jason stood and opened the door.
“I have your truffle pizza and 20 hot wings. Your total is 66,000 won.” The delivery man stated quickly.
Jason looked over his shoulder at me with a glare. I only smirked with a shrug. Jason grumbled something under his breath and took his wallet out of his pocket. He swiped his card in the delivery man’s card reader and took the pizza and wings.
“Have a nice day!” The man said, quickly taking his leave.
Jason mumbled something along the lines of, “I won’t while he’s here.” as he closed the door.
Jason turned to look over at me, eerily calm for a few moments.
“…WHO ORDERS A 66,000 WON PIZZA!? THAT’S 50 U.S. DOLLARS! THATS….”
“6,510 yen.” I helped him out.
“EXACTLY!” He exploded.
“58 U.S. dollars to be exact. ALSO, it was actually 50 U.S. dollars, however, it was an extra 4 for 20 wings since it was on sale I figured why not?”
“…4 dollars for 20 wings? Holy shit that’s a good deal.” He muttered, moving his hands to open the container with wings.
He made a face as if to say ‘not bad’, “They are pretty meaty too, what the fuck.”
“The pizza has a lot of truffles. Never had it before.” I shrugged.
“Then why did you order it!?”
“…I feel like ordering you the most expensive pizza I could find last minute was doing someone justice? Like I personally don’t think I’ve ever said that, but I’m sure someone said they would. Figured I’d be petty for them.”
Jason looked at the pizza then at me, “You’re so fucking weird. If this tastes bad then that someone is getting coal for Christmas.”
Jason walked over to place the food down on the coffee table. I happily helped move things out the way and opened the pizza box and Jason decided to go for the wings first.
“What’s the game plan for today?” Jason asked, mouth slightly full as he spoke.
I gave him a look and shook my head as I picked up a slice of pizza, “You know I hate when you do that.”
“Why? No food is going to fly out and you understand me.” Jason said after he swallowed, shrugging like it wasn’t a big deal.
“No one wants to see your chewed up food, Jason.”
“Then look at my eyes, not my mouth.” I sighed.
“Stop talking about things that annoy you! What’s the game plan?” Jason pressed, his hand moving to get a slice as well.

I ended up at the office, but instead of working, as usual, I was only lost in my thoughts.
I thought if I was far away from my problems, it would just solve itself.
I had to deal with Daisuke.
I had to prep for my father’s party.
I‌ had to deal with nine people in my bunker.
I looked over at my sad excuse for a couch setup. A pillow and a fluffy blanket folded over the armrest. I was going to be beyond busy and I‌ need to avoid the boys for a bit to get things sorted out.
I let out a sigh, “How long will I‌ be here?”‌ I‌ asked myself as I made my way to my desk.
I sat down and tried to focus back on writing out what I could have planned for the game and if there would be more.
It suddenly hit me. I launched myself up from my desk and ran out of my office to find my sister. It might have been easier to just make her come to me but the idea suddenly coming to me clouded any other thought as I ran as fast as I could to the broadcasting department.
Once I got there I could see my sister talking to employees and making sure everything was in order for the new animation to be aired.  Some who were talking a small break immediately got to work when I entered.
I proudly went next to my sister and blurted “I‌ can have the game department only.”‌ in an out of breath tone.
Her eyes grew wide, “Excuse me?”‌ She seemed more concerned than confused.
“You have broadcasting, Jae has the toys and shit, Eun will have food and drinks and I’ll have games. We’ll all just decide together!”‌ I couldn’t suppress the excitement in my voice.
Jilly took a quick look around and grabbed my arm to lead me to the hallway.
“What’s going on in that over-active brain, huh?”‌ She asked me while folding her arms.
“We won’t have to fight for the top if we’re ALL‌ at the top. Jieun isn’t old enough yet, so I’m not worried about that side of our company for at LEAST 2 years!‌ Jae has a thing for money but loves the designs we all come up with. You love the bustle of the broadcasting. You are literally our voice, and it’s good that way. I can be in charge of the game department. Any videogames are managed under me and no one will have to come to you about my bullshit because it’s MY bullshit.”
“This isn’t the four kings. This is a company.”
“A‌ company that will work as long as we all stay in our fucking lanes!‌ Jae is too stubborn to evolve with the company. You won’t take too many creative risks that we need. Jieun will crack under the pressure of handling EVERYTHING. I’m too impulsive or too stuck in my head. But if we all work together we’ll check each other. No fights for the top, no one coming to just one of us for decisions on something the other is working on. No pressure to hold the entire company on our backs. We get our zones and stay in them!”‌
Jilly seemed to look down at the floor, letting my words absorb. After a few long moments, she finally spoke.
“I remember sitting down on the living room floor during Dad’s days off. Our sister helping our mom, Jae being pissed off because Dad just wouldn’t give him a win, and you sitting at the table always learning something new.”‌ Something about her words caused a weight to form on my chest.
She let out a sigh and looked up at the ceiling, “Our father was a strong man. After his will, I tried so hard to understand why he left the company to you. You were so young when he wrote the will. You were still young when he passed. Our mother got into a few fights with him before he died,”‌ She let out a scoff, “Like she was just TRYING to find a reason to be mad at him. And when you got the company, Jae was so angry at you, at Dad. I want it to stop. All the fighting. ”‌ Her eyes landed back on me.
“I‌ even went after you, and I shouldn’t have. This isn’t a competition. I was so upset that you kept it from me and that you would even find yourself in that situation. But yesterday night it finally hit me on how you might’ve felt. I‌ just know you went in with it being a joke that you thought wouldn’t be too serious, and when it was, you weren’t sure what to do. If you reached out to our brother, you would go to jail. He’s too into old-fashioned justice. If you went to mom, she would hide you, but her mouth was too big. Eunnie is still a child. And I‌ would’ve done what I did yesterday. You HAD‌ to hide it.”‌ Her voice seemed to waver as she went on.
I tried to remain completely silent. I could feel a sting behind my eyes, she was starting to understand what kind of stupid I was. Yet there was always a method to my madness.
“I‌ judged you, and thought of our image rather than thinking of you as my brother. I‌ thought of you as a reckless child rather than an adult who was afraid. Our mother wanted you to be a pushover, someone she could dump her problems on. Our brother wanted to knock you down to get to the top and I‌ made you feel like shit when I was supposed to help you.”‌ Actual tears began to run down her face, “You’re my little brother, not my child, and not a fucking punching bag. I shouldn’t have made you feel so judged for something that was an innocent mistake, I’m so sorry, M/n-ie.”‌
She bit her lip, seeming to take a moment to control her emotions before finally saying, “It’s your call. I’ll help, but please, don’t do anything stupid.”
I left a large weight lift off of me.
My sister wasn’t against me. She could never be.
My eyes watered as I waited, wanting to see if maybe she would change her mind.
Her features softened even more, “Oh, M/n-ie. I won’t take it back, I promise. Come here,” She held her arms out and I immediately went into them.
Pressing my face into her shoulder and wrapping my arms around her. As she embraced me back I could smell the comforting scent of her jasmine perfume that she’s been using since middle school. Her hand went up to pet my hair soothingly.
For a moment it was as it should be. A little brother being comforted by his big sister.
“What are you two doing in the hallway?” We heard.
Before I could pull away Jillian held me closer, “Hugging. Like family.” Her voice was almost cold.
“He’s the owner of a company, you shouldn’t be holding him like that. He’s not a child.”
It made sense who it was now.
“Jaeseok, he’s our little brother. It doesn’t matter if he owns a company or not. He felt under the weather so I’m helping.” Our sister shot back, keeping a firm hold on me.
“He’s an adult. If he has problems he needs to deal with them on his own, Jiann.”
Great now my brother and sister were bickering in the hallway. What made this worse was I couldn’t really say anything, due to my face being in her shoulder.
“Family is supposed to help!”
“Family is to help expand the name.”
My sister let out a frustrated groan. I lightly pushed on her hip and she let me go.
I was met with the sight of my brother. He looked well-kempt yet so unkempt. He had on his usual suit, wrinkle-free, and lint-free. His hair looked like he had run his fingers through it repeatedly, and the dark circles under his eyes were impossible to ignore.
“Jae, when is the last time you slept!?” I asked, genuinely concerned.
Jae scoffed, “We don’t all get day-offs whenever we want. ”
I frowned at his response, of course, he would turn this into a fight, “But you should still take breaks. Your hours should give you plenty of time to sleep.”
Our sister tsked, “Don’t snap at our brother because you’re working overtime.”
“You’re working overtime!? I told you not to!” I exclaimed.
Our brother rolled his eyes, “If I don’t do it then who would?”
I scoffed at his clear delusion. These next few days would be hell.
“Why did you come over here for?” Jiann changed the subject.
“Right, our mother wishes to reserve a large building for our father’s birthday. She also would like to invite some of his family to our childhood home.”
There was silence.
“Well tell her she’s out of her fucking mind. The party happens here. This meant everything to Dad. The party happens here and we go back home for the night. Like always. I don’t care who she invites to the party but no one follows us back to our childhood home. That’s for family only. My sons and husband don’t even join us and neither does your wife, what makes her think they’re invited? No.” Jiann was firm, crossing her arms, just waiting for someone to defy her.
“They’re even lucky to be invited to the party itself. They call us entitled pricks but want to be part of us when it comes to social events.” I muttered.
“Exactly my point. No. They don’t get to come back to our family home. They also don’t get family passes as they are here. They don’t get special treatment.”
Jae seemed to nod thinking it over, “I agree. Having them think they can do as they please won’t be good for our company’s image. Or our family’s image. I’ll let security know of their names and faces. I’ll also brief them on how to properly handle them if they cause a scene.”
Like I need more problems.
“What will they do if they DO cause a scene?” Jiann asked.
“Well, we can’t have them be loud, they would draw too much attention we’ll just–”
“CEO-nim!” I heard, making us jump a little.
A woman, looking highly professional jogged up to us, holding documents to her chest.
“Yes?”
“We have another problem. Some of the computers in the game development floor have been damaged. I attempted to get ahold of Mr.Katashi but was unable to.”
Oh great, more problems.
My favorite.
Tumblr media
I somewhat had everything under control by lunch. Someone had corrupted a few computers. I had to emergency order new ones and help transfer the files over and had the corrupted computers stored away as evidence. I was walking around the programmers, making sure I was there if there were any signs of any glitching computers.
I was pretty sure that whoever was doing this was selecting a special set of computers, the ones with all the character designs and code that took too long to recreate at this point. I made sure to tell Jason to find the best cybersecurity team he could. I needed to guard this project with my life and I wouldn’t let my father’s dream die with me.
I was pacing back in forth between the row of game developers when I was approached.
It was a nice looking man. He seemed small. Not in height, but in the way he presented himself. He was dressed in a simple dress shirt, straightened pants, and tie. His dark hair was covering his forehead and he looked out of place. Afraid to meet my gaze, afraid to catch too much attention. He was holding files and USB drives but looked like if I said “boo” he would drop everything and run.
He must be new.
“Hello, how can I help you?” I asked in the nicest voice I could.
He played a little bit with the edges of the folders before speaking, “I’m with the cybersecurity team… They sent me to…,” He seemed to be stuck or thinking of what to say, “To set up.” His voice sounded like it could be attention-catching if he tried. Not too high-pitched and had a certain roughness to it.
“Ah! Of course! We had computers and space for your set up in the room next to the security room.” I informed, moving to borrow the post-it notes from one of the developers to write down the code to the mostly empty room, “If any of you have any questions or needs, feel free to call my personal number. It’s close to us all ordering lunch so call the front desk if you have any differences in dietary needs.” I handed him the post-it note with a warm smile.
He quickly took the note, gave me a small bow, and rushed off.
Poor dude.
I moved back to my work at hand, making a mental note to visit them later.
Tumblr media
A little later into the afternoon I was in my office, trying my best to look over the security footage. It didn’t look like the files were corrupted manually. No one was there in person but it still gave me a strange feeling. This obviously wasn’t just some teenagers just goofing around. I let out a loud groan, knowing this would kill me until I figured out who did it.
I got up out of my seat and gathered the papers I needed to sign off on and approve. I shoved them all into a folder, grabbed a couple of pens, a few stationery items for organization reasons, and headed off to the cybersecurity room.
Upon reaching the room I began to think about how they would all react seeing their boss watch over them as they worked.
Would they feel pressure?
Would I make them uncomfortable?
I decided to just knock on the door. If I made them uncomfortable they could tell me and I would leave.
As soon as my knuckles hit the door it flung open to reveal the guy before. This time his hair was a little ruffled, pushed back to show off his forehead, and his tie pulled loose.
“Good! Saves me the trouble of having to find you, come in!” He gave me a smirk and went back into the room.
Well, that was a turn of a personality.
The room we had set up for them was all set up into cubicles. At first, I was against it but they had large whiteboards on the cubical walls and had their own privacy. The guy before led me to the end and sat down at his new desk, his screen was pulled up to a jumbled mess of codes that hurt my eyes to look at for too long.
“You were definitely about to be hacked. I’m not sure what they did that they ruined it so badly but we can try to trace him in a few moments.” He explained.
“So what's the next step I should take after this?” I questioned, putting my hand on the back of his chair to lean forward and look at the wall of code.
The man seemed to be thrown off by my question. I wasn’t going to be confident if I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing or what this all meant. He was a professional. I saw it best to ask for his opinion.
“Uh…Uhm…W-Well, the next step is to contact the authorities. This is a crime after all.”
“Isn’t tracing them a crime too though?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“Eh, not really. If I was hacking into their computer for private information then it would be a crime. Like they tried to do here. But I’m just getting the general idea of their location, its pretty public despite what everyone thinks.”
There was a pause.
“…..So how much can I pay you so we aren't public?”
Tumblr media
“Hey, dick, we need to talk.” Jason busted into the once quiet cybersecurity room.
I had taken up an empty cubical that was at the very end facing the other cubicles. I could see the door and only the sides were up. I had papers scattered around in semi-neat piles, my hand starting to cramp from all the signing and notes I’ve made.
The small cybersecurity team almost jumped out of their skin upon Jason’s entrance.
I let out a large sigh, “If it has anything to do with I.P. Addresses, VPNs, or how I’m a fucking idiot, I already got that talk, and I don’t want to hear it.”
Jihun, the man who did a fucking 180 in personality held back a laugh at my irritation.
“Do I look like I know anything about computers? It’s not about that, the police are in your office right now waiting for you. ”
“Police? I requested only one detective?” I looked up from my papers.
Jason let out a sigh, “I tried to tell them that but he insisted that he needed his partner.”
I let out a groan, “Fiiinnnne.”  I stood up reluctantly and shot Jihun a quick, “I’ll be back.”
As soon as we were out the room, Jason shoved me into the wall.
“Ow! What the fuck was that!?” I asked, my voice higher pitched in shock.
“This is by far the dumbest thing you’ve ever done!” He hissed.
“That’s not true! I’ve done far more idiotic things in my life!” I defended, standing straight in protest.
“You asked for the detective working the kidnapping case to work your hacking case!”
I let out another sigh. I should’ve known he would lose his mind.
“Seung Eunsuk isn’t going to link the two. Relax.” I rolled my eyes.
“And if he does!?”
“Then it’s your fault for being so jumpy. He was pretty opinionated and since he’s newish, he’s going to be fair.” I reasoned as I pressed the elevator button.
“You think that now, but when he has cuffs on you I will be there to say I told you so.” I gave Jason a side-ways glance in judgment.
“…He’s not going to solve THAT problem. You dirty-minded jerk.”
Jason’s eyes widened as I stepped into the elevator, “…You kinky bitch.”
Tumblr media
“Detective Seung! I’m glad you can make it.” I announced as I entered the room.
Sure enough, there were two officers in the room. The older officer was the same from last time, only this time he looked more fidgety. Like something was off.
Eunsuk was looking at a paperweight I had on my desk, completely calm. Upon seeing me a small smile lit up his face, “Mr.L/n. Glad to be here.”
I could feel Jason roll his eyes behind me at our teasing remarks, “Please, have a seat. We have a few things to talk about.”
Eunsuk put down the paperweight and patted the older officer’s arm like he was telling him silently to do so as well.
“So, we heard you had a hacking?” Eunsuk questioned, pulling out his notepad and flipping to an empty page.
I made a hum of confirmation as I began to pour them water, “It wasn’t too long ago. They somehow messed up so badly that they corrupted a few of our computers.”
“Any idea where the hack came from?”
“Not yet. Our CyberSecurity team is working on it.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to have a few programmers from the police department to come down and check it out as well.”
“I don’t have a problem with that. Just be sure to ask our teams leader, Jihun about it as well.”
“Jihun? May I have his full name?”
“He just goes by Jihun and doesn’t seem to fond of formal speech.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. May we take the corrupted computers in as evidence? That might help.”
“Jihun had the computers sent to their room. You should be able to get at least one or two from him.”
“Understood. Lastly, do you know anyone who would think to do this? Any enemies recently for  Barnanby Inc? Piss anyone off?”
“Eunsuk.” The older detective’s voice sounded like a warning. Like I was going to rip Eunsuk’s head off for asking such a question.
“Our company is now the third biggest in South Korea. We have many people jealous, but no one has threatened us or made their hatred obvious enough for us to see.”
Eunsuk nodded as he wrote one last thing then closed his notepad, “Alright, I have a feeling the cyber people will point us in the right direction. It’ll help us narrow it down so much more. We’ll keep in touch?”
I nodded extending my hand out to shake his, “We will, Jason will give you my number as well as escort you to our CyberSecurity room. If you should need me or have any questions, don’t hesitate to call!”
Eunsuk happily shook my hand, “We’ll figure this out, M/n. I promise.”

I had worked well through the morning. When lunch had swung around I was planning on putting it off in all honesty. I hoped the lunch break time would be put to me making a serious dent in my work.
I still had several things to go through and about 3 meetings scheduled back to back. I had been neglecting my work for a little too long that it came back to bite my ass. As I was calling an investor things took a turn, however.
“You want the first-ever game my father developed? May I asked why?” I was taken aback on why this would even be asked.
Ever since my father started to company, his game developing had been long forgotten since he wanted my mother to be the spotlight. No other investor or partner has asked about his work. They were more interested in how well we would market the game and how much income would come from it.
“You said that most games would be inspired by your father’s ideas and unfinished projects. I’d like to see what he had in mind.”
“I understand. If you could, may I have a few days to get it to you? They’re all in our family home, I’m just unsure of where.”
“Of course. I’ll give you a week. That will give me enough time to look over what else you have to offer me.”
“Thank you, Sir. I’ll be sure to make sure your time is not being wasted. I hope you have a great week.”
As soon as I hung up I let out a groan.
I had to go through everything in my father’s office. That didn’t seem too hard, however, my mother just gathered almost everything my dad had and just stashed them in his office. An out of sight out of mind tactic that would be my doom.
As I cussed under my breath I reluctantly grabbed my blazer to pull on like a child who got yelled at his mom for not wearing their jacket outside and made my way to the elevator to go to the parking lot.
I didn’t even know where my father stashed all his games. I just found one of his notebooks with ideas inside of it. Even then I didn’t feel right reading it. Like it was a private thing. Now I had to look through EVERYTHING.
Out of irritation I began to press the parking lot bottom harshly and was jump scared by the doors opening at the lobby.
At the door stood Jason with a cooler bag slung over his shoulder, looking irritated and tired.
“Hey there, Loser. Got any lunch money?” I teased.
Once he looked up he seemed relieved and rushed into the elevator to push a random button to make the door closed. As soon as the door was closed he shoved the bag into my hands with a sigh.
“And this is?” I asked, not fully understanding what was in the bag.
“If it’s body parts, there are better ways to get me to dispose of a body for you,” I added.
He only gave me a tired glare, wordless.
My eyes widened, “IS it body parts!?” I quickly unzipped the bag.
No body parts. Only tupperware with food inside of it.
“It isn’t. That’s disappointing.” I mumbled.
“It’s from the guys. They were worried that you’d skip lunch.” Jason grumbled as he leaned against the wall.
“Oh. Well, that’s nice. I was about to head to grab something then go to my mom's. One less stop.” I smiled, feeling warm inside with the thought of them making my lunch.
“What? Why?”
“I have work still. But an investor asked for my dad’s earliest game, so I have to go through his office to find it. ”
Jason only nodded as the elevator doors opened.
“I’ll be sure to stop by the bunker to talk to the boys.” I promised as I began to exit.
“Good. They ask too many questions. I’ll get a few things off your desk to take to the bunker so you won’t miss work.”
“I appreciate you!” I called as I began to jog to my car.
“YOU BETTER.”
Tumblr media
I let out an irritated sigh as my third call to my mom when unanswered. I wasn’t going to play cat and mouse all day because she never liked to be home. So I walked off the porch and to a certain bush to get the spare key.
Once I opened the door I made a b line to my father’s old office and immediately opened a window. The room was almost foggy from the dust in the air. Like an ancient tomb that was too precious to open.
I let out a cough and tried to cover my mouth and nose with the neck of my shirt as I began to search through his desk.
I let out a groan once I realized NOTHING was organized. My mom must have gone through it when he passed and didn’t even consider that anyone would come back in here. I looked around the cluttered room in horror.
Books were thrown about. Papers scattered. Boxes loaded with everything from clothes to old computer parts were placed around the room.
Knowing there was no way around this I began to clean.
Tumblr media
Once I had almost everything in its rightful place I still hadn’t found my dad’s games. I figured I wasn’t looking hard enough and began to load everything into my car to look through at the office since I had been there for longer than needed.
I made sure to sit on my office couch as I went through box after box.
It was pretty mundane. It was starting to get really boring until I came across a book. It was a book about animation which was to be expected but a few of the pages had marks in the corner, like quickly scribbled numbers. A few pages were torn out and torn in half.
I frowned as I began to flip through, not really noticing a pattern in the numbers or even knowing what the numbers would be to.
“I HAVE MADE AN ENTRANCE!” A loud booming sound came from my office door.
Out of pure reflex, I chucked the book I was holding at the door.
A loud thud and screech rang through the room as my eyes began to focus on who came through the door.
It was my little sister, cringing away from one side of the door that the book seemingly hit. Her eyes were wide and her mouth parted open in shock.
I let out an almost snort as I held my hands out, “Jieun, my bad! Don’t do that! I get you wanted dramatic effect but holy fuck give me a warning.” I complained.
“Give YOU a warning!? You threw a book at me!” She got out of her shocked position to clench her fists at her sides.
“I thought you were a monster!”
“HOW OLD ARE YOU!?” I giggled at the question.
“Will you forgive me if I eat lunch with you?”
“…It’s 2 pm.” I rolled my eyes.
“All you had to say was ‘no’.” I pouted as I got up to look for the bag Jason gave me earlier that day.
“I dropped by to see how my amazing brother was doing,” I could practically hear the sugar drip from her lips as I began to unpack my food.
“Cut the uwu crap and tell me why you’re really here.” I sighed as I opened the larger container that had rice in it.
She let out a groan and stomped over to plop herself on the couch across from me, “Mom didn’t like that you guys cut Dad’s family out of visiting our childhood home so she’s inviting them to our apartment. One of their brats already occupied my room.”
The irritating thing about this was the fact that our childhood home was already paid for, but my mother refused to live there because it was too much of a reminder to what was. So she insisted to move into a luxury two-bedroom apartment in Gangnam.
I let out a scoff as I poked at the fried chicken that had gone soggy in a container covered in some kind of sauce. Jae was paying for that apartment, yet even HE couldn’t enforce anything, “I bet Jae would love to know that.” I smirked.
“I tried to tell her we don’t want them around us be she went on and on about how we were family and how I should be nice! Can I just please stay with you?” She whined.
I began to think it over as I chewed, “I don’t think you can.”
“Why nooooot!?” I tried not to enjoy her misery.
“I’m not staying at my apartment. So you can stay there, you’ll just be alone and then our siblings will chew me out for leaving a 17 year-old girl alone in an apartment in Gangnam.” I muttered, shoving my face with more food, and then moved to open another container.
“We can just keep a secret!”
“I doubt that.”
“C’monnn! Pleasseee!”
“How about this, you go ask Jilly and Jae about staying with them, if they both say no, then you can have the keys by tonight.” I bargained.
She lit up, “Seriously!?” I nodded, “ILLGOASK!” She nearly yelled and bolted towards the door.
“DON’T RUN TOO FAST OR JILLY WILL SUE MY ASS! I DIDN’T RAISE YOU TO BE AN IDIOT!” I yelled… with my mouth full.
“SORRY! I’LL SPEEDWALK!”
Tumblr media
I quickly finished my work to look through old floppy disks and USB drives my father had stocked up. I had told my assistant to push everything back that day.
It was around dinner time when I found a flash drive that caught my attention.
Most of them were files for unfinished games, ideas, and a mess of coding that didn’t make sense to my idiotic brain. But this USB drive had only two folders.
Both were password protected.
Once I clicked on them the command prompt on my computer popped up asking for the password.
I let out a sigh as I entered my mom’s birthday.
Access Denied. The command prompt closed.
I opened and tried my twin sibling’s birthday.
Not it.
I let out a groan and began to enter mine, trying to get it out of the way before I entered Jieun’s birthday which I was SURE was the password if it wasn’t my mother’s.
Upon pressing enter after the last digit of my birthday year the words ‘access granted’ appeared in the command prompt, the small window closed up, and the file opened.
There were 4 documents there.
READ FIRST
LEE ANIMATIONS
GWAN BROADCASTING
AN HAEWON
My fingers itched to click on one of the other files. Two were popular in media. Lee Animations had rebranded to Lee Entertainment a few years back. They hired idols and actors. Their animations were no longer being made by them, they chose to switch to the idol and film business pretty late. Everyone thought they would go bankrupt.
Gwan Broadcasting was a thing before my father even went to America. Years and generations in the company as well as very good dramas and sub-networks under their belt.
An Haewon. The name didn’t even begin to register in my memory.
Against my impulses, I clicked on the ‘READ FIRST’ file.
.
M/n
You’re reading this because you snooped in my things… OR I handed you this after you finished college but let's be honest with ourselves the first option is more likely.
I hope by now you’ve grown and I’ve handed the company over to you. So just have a drink with me after this because I have a few things to get off my chest.
I didn’t get this company JUST through hard work. I hope as time goes on you begin to understand the circumstances that led me to make the decisions I made and the actions I took.
I won't ask for forgiveness.
Just understanding.
I’ve made the three other files to explain why these three people, these three companies want to see you suffer. To see us suffer.
Against my instinct to be the father you respect and admire, I tried to explain the truth and not what would make me look good.
The second password-protected folder is of the things they wanted from me. Either wanting them back or wanting to steal away.
I love you. I hope by explaining these things you can learn from them and make better decisions for the company and family.
Whatever you decide, just know I fully support it. I would never be disappointed in you. You’ve been the most hard-working out of all my children. You were quiet but your drive to achieve was always there. Even as I write this you’re at our dining room table studying. I still don’t know what the fuck twelve times nine is and to be completely honest I couldn’t care less.
Take care, Mn-ie.
Your Reckless Asshole Father,
L/N Jaeseong
.
I could feel tears trail down my cheeks as I quickly closed the document and raced to click on the one under it.
“M/N!” The sudden sound of my office door flying open again made me jump.
My siblings have arrived.
Jiann was now in front of my desk, arms folded in anger. She looked like my mother ready to rock my shit.
Jaeseok was holding firmly on our younger sister’s arm as she was pouting, looking at the floor.
“Why are you crying?” Jae asked, making my older sister’s face soften.
“It’s over my dick size, what do you all want?” I quickly replied.
My older sister’s face hardened again, all business, “Did you tell our sister that if we both said no to her staying with us that she could stay at your empty apartment!?”
“I did. Jae, don’t hold too tight her skin is sensitive.” I frowned.
“Exactly, she’s sensitive and you want her in an apartment by herself!?” Jae threw back in my face.
I rolled my eyes, “That apartment is more than secure. It’s not like I live in a crappy apartment give me SOME credit.”
“SHE’S SIXTEEN.”
“She’s going to be seventeen soon. I know that’s not an adult at that age but I was that age when I started taking care of her and started getting ready to take over the company. She’s not a child.”
“Yes! She is! And so were you! Don’t make this a toxic cycle, M/n!” Jiann snapped.
“Don’t be dramatic. It’s not like I have a kid and handed it to her like ‘you’re the mom now’, it’s just a few nights in a secure apartment that she wouldn’t HAVE to stay in if you two got your mother in check. ” My voice was filled with irritation that began to build.
I closed pulled the USB out and put it in my desk as Jiann began her verbal assault, “She’s OUR mother. Just because you helped raise our sister doesn't mean you stop being her son! We’re getting the situation handled.”
“Well until you do, I want my baby sister comfortably living in my apartment.” I snickered as I stood up to try to pry Jaeseok’s hand off of my little sister.
“She can put up with it for a day or two.” Jaeseok growled.
I shoved his hand off and turned Jieun towards the door to leave, “She already did put up with it for a day or two. My sister shouldn’t HAVE to put up with anything uncomfortable in her own fucking home. So I’m taking her to mine since our mother STILL isn’t a considerate enough parent to care about her child rather than fucking leeches. Now if you would excuse me, I’m going to go have dinner with my PERFECTLY CAPABLE sister and then show her where she will be staying. I want you out of my office when I get back and I want the situation handled within 48 hours.” I ordered as I guided Jieun out the office.
“They’re going to get mad at you for talking to them like that.” Jieun warned.
“They’ll have to deal with it. I’m their boss until we split the company. I give orders not sympathy.” I grumbled as I pushed the elevator button.
Tumblr media
I had taken Jieun to my apartment. I had ordered us dinner while she unpacked.
The mood was light but had a dark undertone.
It was oddly nostalgic. My sister moving things in my closet to make space for her things because she didn’t feel safe in her own room.
Us alone in the apartment getting our own dinner because we didn’t expect our mom home until the very early hours of the morning.
“I ordered fried chicken. The app said it should be here in a few minutes. I hope that’s okay with you.” I called over as I began to clear off the coffee table.
“Is it yangnyeom?” She called back.
I couldn’t help the smile that came onto my face, “Yes. I even asked for extra sauce because you like the spice.”
“….what about beer?”
I rolled my eyes, “I have some in the fridge you delinquent.”
She let out an excited ‘yay’ and began to put her clothes in my closet in a more excited manner.
“How is school going?”
“Alright, It’s pretty boring though.”
“Boring, how?”
“Well, I only have one true friend and days just repeat themselves.”
“Then join a club.”
“I DID.” I let out a chuckle at her outburst.
She skipped out of the bedroom and bounded over to the fridge, “Who would’ve thought at 16 I would be drinking a beer with my older brother in a penthouse apartment in Gangnam that he’s going to leave me with.” I only shook my head at her.
“Please don’t filter yourself when you tell me how living with mom is REALLY going.” I began as she made her way to the living room with two beers.
“Well, mom is just like she was before. Never rhere. Sometimes she goes out with friends or she just kinda leaves and doesnt say anything.”
“…Does she at least make dinner?”
“Nope. She barely speaks to me unless we’re all gathered together.”
I knew this was going to be a mistake. One that would make my sister and brother furious. My mother would kill me. I knew if my dad were here he would understand at least.
“Okay.” I sighed as I fished in my pocket.
I pulled out the apartment keys and placed them on the table.
My sister looked at them then back at me in confusion, “You can have it. Don’t worry about rent, or money. I’ll handle it. Just please be safe and stick to studying and working hard. The last thing I want is you deciding to fuck off instead of go to school.”
“YOU’RE GIVING ME AN APARTMENT!?” Her eyes twinkled with tears and excitement.
“Yeah, everyone will kill me if they find out so move in slowly. Act like you’re just staying here for a few days. I’ll tell security that you’re staying here now. Just please don’t burn the place down.”
“I would NEVER.” Jieun gasped dramatically.
I gave her a pointed look, “Remember when you tried to be nice to me and make curry and yo–”
“OTHER THAN THAT I WOULD NEVER.”
I only shook my head and reached over for the remote.
Even when I turned on the TV I didn’t focus on it. My mind only wandered to what the following days would be.
After all I left 9 people alone in my bunker with no contact all day. I mean they could wait.
Right?

omg your doctor levi headcanons—fuuuck, on-point, perfect, just, exactly!! your mind! my other thought is he’d do well in pathology (no patient interaction lmao) or oncology tbh because levi’s actually pretty damned emphatic, and canonically (tragically sad), he just knows how to help people through their final days 😞 but help because i’ve also always envisioned him to work in neurosciences or pediatrics because i feel like he’s the right amount of academic genius mixed with being highly proficient in the art of medicine. a dream! in pediatrics, he still talks to kids like they’re adults, and with teens, he is always a champion for their autonomy, especially with overbearing parents. they love him, truly 😌 he’s also the right amount of “toxic” if you feel, the kind that builds grit and the kind that is for the growth of his juniors because he wants them to be better! he comes off as a mean jerk but is actually a very nurturing mentor, sir, lemme be your mentee or lemme marry you, i will cry! i only have this one very specific headcanon for him—in my head, he hates wearing thee white coat LMAO. like it’s a status symbol for him and unnecessary, and every senior he’s encountered who insists on it has turned out to be arrogant and loud but lacking underneath. it’s an extra piece that brings even more hospital germs and contaminants around...and he stashes his in his locker and brings it out for laundry only when the hospital director requires all of them to wear it. levi gets a personal memo in these cases 😭 but he looks extra handsome and hot and dreamy in scrubs. like...people-stares kinda hot. good bye, we just finished the semester and got a week-long break before finals, and i’m gonna daydream about this all week
also, eyelid kisses anon is very right with that 👀 pride and prejudice (2005) is a classic period drama film that has peak romantic gestures (those...touches...) and mr. darcy screams levi! acts of service as a love language! truly one of the greats. it’s one of my favorite films in the romance genre (well my definition of it) alongside pacific rim (2013). yeah i know, it’s giant mecha robots vs giant monsters but! drift compatibility! the pinnacle of modern romance, i am sorry to the rest! that film was just absolute genius, from the concept to the plot and to its very essence, and it’s had me in its grip ever since it came out and has never let go 😭
-💉
Hi anon!! I'm so glad to hear from youuu 😚😚 and I totally agree about the white coat omfg. I'm sure it was fine when he was freshly graduated, but as time goes on and he has more interactions with the seniors and hospital heads, it becomes a nuisance for him, and part of the hospital culture he doesn't wanna participate in. He would totally bring it out for mandatory or special occasions, but otherwise, he's either wearing his scrubs, or his semi-formal attire on rounds; the white coat stays in his locker, otherwise.
He would look so dreamy in scrubs sigh. I see him as the type to usually just stick to solid colors, as opposed to someone like Dr. Hange who loves little prints and cartoons on their scrubs. Levi's are monochrome, but they fit him so damn well, you can't help but to stop and stare a bit when he walks by. I do think the most loud thing or most personal statement you would find on his uniform is the lanyard that holds his ID: if you gave him something patterned or colorful, he would wear it (seemingly begrudgingly, but he really doesn't mind having a little reminder of you at work); in an au where you have kids, I can see him using one his kids made or designed or picked out for him; maybe even his resident(s) got him a new one after their rotation because they noticed his old one was wearing down, and he gratefully accepted it.
I swear if I find time, I'll watch Pride and Prejudice!! I know it's a classic and probably should have just finished the book in sixth grade when I had it 😭😭 but Pacific Rim!! I'm so glad we understand the absolute tenderness that that movie contains and the genius and nuance of reinventing the idea of soulmates. So good, it's all so good.

Could I request a timestamp! 20:53 of husband Yaku with fluff and maybe a lil’ suggestive?
How can I turn down a request when it’s my MAN? ♡✧( ु•⌄• ) Here ya go sweetie!
[20:53]
About : Yaku x reader Note : Fluff, suggestive at the end though! Forgive me if I have any errors in this one!
You pressed your thumb to the little square scanner on top of the door handle, you waited for a second and when it let out a beep you pushed the thick wooden door opened. Yaku didn’t fail to notice the little excited squeak you let out.
“We’re finally home!” You cheered, throwing your hands up as you turned to the corner of the hall. Yaku hummed as he closed the door behind him. Once the door clicked, the man pulled both of your suitcases and set it aside. He then went to your side and snaked his hand around your waist.
“Did you hate our trip that much?” He chuckled, placing a kiss on the side of your head as he reached the light switch with his other hand. You turned to him and shook your head.
“What? Of course not! I love it,” Yaku’s features soften at your cheerful face, “I just miss home. We’ve been there for months!”
“Two in a half weeks are not months,” Yaku watched you giggle and free yourself from his hand.
Around three weeks ago, Yaku informed you about the upcoming game in Russia. It was normal for him to go overseas for weeks and you were okay with that, you were prepared. However this time, your husband had asked you to come with him.
You hadn’t forgotten how his eyes glowed with pure happiness when you accepted. Both of you were busy with your works and these past few months had been hard for the two of you to spend time. Yaku would always leave early and come back home late at night, tired from his practices. You would already be asleep by the time Yaku was home, exhausted from all the meetings and projects you did.
The hard part was to find someone in the office who can take care of your position while you were away. Surprisingly, one of your closest co-workers insisted on helping you and you were more than thankful.
“It’s no problem at all! I’m tired of you having to whine all the time about not spending enough time with your husband every time we have breaks together,”
You thank the world for people like them.
You took off your shoes and socks, stepping on the rather cold tile of the floor.
“Eh? It’s a bit dusty here,” You purposefully dragged your feet on the floor. You lifted your right foot to see the soles of it getting a thin coat of dust. Yaku walked from behind you, peeking from your shoulder.
“How come? I bought that little cleaning robot for every room,” He said, walking towards the corner of the living room.
“Maybe it ran out of battery?” You suggested,
“It shouldn’t. Even if it did, it should automatically go to the charging station.”
Yaku crouched down and picked up the circular object. He checked the circular object, raising an eyebrow when he saw the little red light, a signal that the battery ran out. He inspected the charging and flinched when he saw the power button wasn’t on.
“The charging station isn’t on!” He facepalmed and massaged his temples. Registering what he just said, you let out a loud laugh at your clumsy husband.
“How could you forget to turn on the charging station?” You wheezed receiving a groan from him.
Is that why he didn’t get any notifications on his phone from the robot?
You went to his crouched down figure, patting his head.
“Don’t worry, I’ll just clean it up a little,” You said, rolling up your sleeves. Yaku turned to you and raised an eyebrow as he stood up.
“Aren’t you tired?”
“Not at all,” You shake your head. Yaku sighed and gave you a small smile he then walked back to the suitcases.
“Then I’ll help you.” Yaku took off his coat, his back facing you as he did. Placing it on his coat on his suitcase handle, he turned to you. He loosened his tie, placing it on top of his coat. He proceeded to open the first button of his shirt and his sleeve, rolling it up when his wrists were both free. You bit your lip, the action never fails to make you feel some type of way. At this point, you don’t know if he was doing this on purpose or not.
Shaking the naughty thoughts out of your head, you cleared your throat.
“Aren’t you tired, Mori?”
“Nope. It’s only – “ He paused, bringing up his left wrist to look at the time, “ – 20:53 anyway,” He waved his hand at you, brushing off your question.
“Now, less talking, more cleaning!”
You and Yaku shared tasks. At first, you were supposed to clean the living room and kitchen but Yaku told you to unload your clothes and wash them. You plastered a grin and teased him about not being able to use the washing machine properly. He never did understand those things but he didn’t want to admit it.
You brought the suitcases upstairs and turned down Yaku’s offer to help you, saying that you’re strong and independent. Your husband shook his head and played along. You walked towards your room and unlocked the door. You were a bit surprised when you saw the robot in the room was wandering around.
I guess he didn’t forget to turn this one on.
You checked the other rooms upstairs and indeed the robots were roaming around. You ran to the edge of the stairs and yelled about the new information you had. Yaku sighed in relief, looks like you guys would only be cleaning the living room then.
Running back to your room, you began unloading your suitcases. You hummed a little song that’s been stuck in your head for a while as you placed your items back to their places. You then went to the washroom and began putting the dirty clothes in as well as the new clothes you and Yaku bought. You were lucky that there weren’t many clothes needed to be washed, since the laundry service was great at Yaku’s apartment in Russia. While washing, you look back at the events that happened there.
There were lots of fun memories with your husband. You met his teammates and his friends there, you watched his practice and would go visit his favorite spots right after. But of course, the most exciting was when his official match started. His performance was amazing; how fast and how accurate he dug the ball never fail to amaze you. But there’s always this one routine you caught him doing whenever he’s about to enter the court.
Yaku might love volleyball but he values everything when it comes to you, even the little things. So you could imagine how much he values your wedding rings, the very item that proves your love and strong bonds for each other. He never wanted to take off the ring, except when it’s necessary or emergency.
Volleyball includes a lot of movements, especially in the arms and hands. Even if his position is a Libero – a position that doesn’t include his hands so much – he was still worried that he might ruin the wedding ring. So he bought a chain necklace and every time he’s going to play in a game, he’d slid the ring to the necklace and wore it throughout the game. He thinks of it as his lucky charm.
Now back to the routine.
You sat on the front row, even though you were high-key scared of being smacked by a ball coming at you at 100 mph, you wanted to see your husband better. He was standing at the sides, waiting to be switched again by a player. Every once in a while he would turn to you or even steal glances. The rotation of his team changed and it was time for him to get back in the court. You watched him high five his teammate and just as his feet were one step away from the court, he reached into his jersey and pulled out the wedding ring, giving it a kiss and once he was in, he tucked it back safely inside.
Your heart exploded in pure happiness every time he does that. But you would never tell him that.
After finishing your cleaning duty – and washing up – you went downstairs to see if your husband needed any help. On the way there you overheard your husband singing a very familiar song. (psst, press the link!)
Once you were in the living room, you couldn’t believe your eyes.
He was sweeping the floor with a broom, his earphones in both ears, and his hips swaying as he sang aloud. You plastered a smile, stifling your laughter as you walked slowly towards him from behind.
“Boo!” You slapped both of your hands on his shoulder and he visibly jumped like a cat, the broom dropping on the floor. He turned around and frowned.
“(Y/n)! I thought I told you to stop scaring me like that!” He yelled, his expression made you howl in laughter.
“You were singing so loudly and your voice sucks, Mori! I had to stop you from getting us in trouble for noise complaints from the neighbors.” You joked,
“My voice isn’t that bad!” He pinched your cheeks, pulling it a little to teach you a lesson
You ordered him to go and wash up as you continued his cleaning work and about twenty minutes later, the two of you laid down on the bed, your limbs tangled as you talk about nothing in particular.
“But it was nice wasn’t it?” He asked, his fingers tangled in your hair.
“What was?”
“The trip. We’re able to spend some much needed time with each other,” You hummed in agreement, a moment of silence engulfing you.
“Are you tired?” he suddenly asked. You looked up at him and shook your head.
“Weirdly enough, no.”
“Good,”
Yaku abruptly sat up and pulled you into his lap. Before you could process what was happening, his lips were already pressing tender kisses to your collarbones and the crook of your neck. You let out a small moan and he pulled away.
“I can help you with that,” he whispered before exploring your neck with his lips, possibly leaving marks.
You didn’t want to give in that easily.
“Are you sure?” You asked, massaging the back of his head with your hands. He pulled away once again and stared at you, his eyes had a mischievous glint in them.
“Believe me, by the time I’m done with you, you’re going to be exhausted.” He smirked. His hands pulled you close as he whispers in your ear.
“Maybe even get noise complaints from the neighbors,”
Seeing that you were speechless, your husband chuckled.
“What do you say?”

Dumb thoughts on the Child Avatars AU
I dunno, just some dumb ideas I’ve had since I started talking about the AU online/brainstorming about it. (Putting it under a readmore for everyone’s sake)
The “Daisy kidnaps Jon” situation in this AU is Daisy riding her bike to Simon Fairchild’s mansion, holding a water-gun up to both Mike and Jon’s heads, and ordering them to ride with her to the grocery store to buy soda and hang out at a nearby playground for the day. Cue Elias flipping tf out when Jon isn’t at Simon’s place when he goes to pick him up later, Simon being half asleep because he was napping while the kids hung out, and Mike getting soaked by Daisy before he agrees to go with her, and since this happens in, like, late fall or early winter, he gets pneumonia afterwards and can’t hang out for awhile, leading to the kids jokingly saying he’s dead. Btw the only reason the trio was found is because Basira was invited after they made it to the park, and she convinced Daisy to let the boys go home. Daisy literally only kidnapped them because she wanted to play with someone.
Also the Buried!Daisy arc is Daisy getting eaten by a Buried controlled sandbox and Jon jumping in after her. The rest of the kids, who thankfully witnessed this, spent the next three hours digging for them, with Breekon & Hope eventually joining in to help since they were in the area. Daisy and Jon form a trauma bond afterwards and are now best friends.
Jon keeps getting marked by shit and it’s stressing Elias out because hE’S NOT READY FOR THE WATCHER’S CROWN YET!!! He needs more time to prepare, but his son is literally getting marked faster than fucking Sonic.
Speaking of Sonic, seeing as the “Console Wars” (Sega vs Nintendo) are happening during this time period, the kids take the rivalry Very Seriously. The biggest arguments are had between Sasha, Daisy, Julia, and Mike, who are all on Team Sega, and Jon, Martin, Tim, and Danny, who are all on Team Nintendo.
Sasha, close to tears she’s so angry: “Sega DO what NintenDON’T, Tim!!!”
When Martin was born, he only had one thick clump of curly hair that was white, but as he’s grown older and entered the Lonely multiple times, more of his hair has begun to turn white. As of the time of the AU “starting” (so when he’s 8 years old), he looks like he has white highlights in his hair.
Trevor isn’t a fully-fledged Hunt avatar yet, but the girls more or less are, so if you’ve ever watched Wolf Children, that’s pretty much the situation Trevor is currently trapped in. His daughters keeping changing into wolf pups and running wild as he frantically tries to hide their powers from anyone who isn’t Gerry.
(All of the kids secretly know already, even Basira.)
Basira is pretty much the only “normal” kid of the avatar children, save MAYBE for Tim, but he’s been deeply marked by the circus and has a few tiny powers (think S3 Jon as he was figuring out some of his powers, but wasn’t a full-on Archivist just yet).
The season 1 gang (including Danny) are the closest group of friends in the AU, save for Daisy and Basira’s friendship, and they hang out a lot at each other’s homes on the weekends.
Adelard usually brings Jane with him for his “trips” away from the institute, so it’s not unusual for her to be gone for long periods of time. But she always sends postcards and gifts to the institute for everyone!
Helen is three years old, so theoretically she should be able to talk, but she rarely does so, preferring to communicate via giggles and laughter. Only Jon, the Stoker brothers, and Michael can understand her, and they take turns translating for everyone else.
Whenever she’s brought to the institute, Helen takes to toddling around after Jon and Martin, giggling up a storm the whole time. Jon finds it a bit annoying while Martin is endlessly amused by her antics.
A list of the guardian’s/adult’s ages before I fucking forget (as of when the AU “starts” in 1994): Gertrude Robinson - 62, Elias Bouchard “Jonah Magnus” - 51 (200+), Peter Lukas - 55, Simon Fairchild - 83 (300+), Gerard “Gerry” Keay - 30, Michael Shelley - 32, Alfred Grifter - Unknown, Adelard Dekker - 48, Nikola Orsinov - 30ish (100+), Annabelle Cane - 34 (Unknown), Trevor Herbert - 47, Agnes Montague - 25ish (60+), Jude Perry - 35, Jared Hopworth - 29, The Admiral - 10.
The “good” parents all keep trying to set up some kind of PTA meeting so they can actually talk about how to raise these supernatural kids properly, but it keeps going horribly wrong; last time they tried, Alfred Grifter and his band showed up and nearly made Simon go deaf, so no one wants to initiate the next attempt at a meeting.
Tbh, at this point the Fear rituals are more successful than Elias’s shitty attempts at forming a PTA.
At some point in the AU Gerry, Michael, and Trevor all pitch in to buy a decently big house together, which leads to some serious Shenanigans now that Melanie is around Michael and Trevor’s kids/wards... let’s just say there’s gonna be a lot of knife related accidents.
Gerry taught Melanie how to fight when he took her in and it is the single worst decision he’s ever made in his short, goth life, even if he’ll never admit it. Melanie can now beat the shit out of everyone but Julia and Daisy, and it’s pure chaos every time. Tim puts up a decent fight, but he’s been spoiled on easy wins over his brother all his life. Jon tries and fails to so much as push her. Martin runs away crying before Melanie even throws the first punch. Needless to say, the other kids are very cautious about playing with Melanie now.
None of the kids have an education of any kind except for Mike. I’m serious; the only kid who’s decently educated is being raised by Foxy Grandpa Off His Shits McGee! Julia and Daisy have had some public education but not much, Elias refuses to do anything but home-school Jon yet he sucks shit at math, Tim and Danny don’t even know what a school fucking looks like, Melanie and Jane were too young to go to school when they became avatars, Martin has only recently been allowed near other kids so fuck public school (Peter can do math but Nothing Else), Annabelle fucking forgot to give Sasha any kind of an education outside of Web stuff, and Helen is still a very small child. None of these kids have gone to school for more than a few years at most and dear g-d is that gonna suck for them later down the line.
As a result of this, Basira has taught the other kids a few things when she’s come over and insisted on playing “school” with everyone, but she’s still just a kid and can’t always get them to pay attention during her lessons.
Because of this Rosie, Gerry, Michael, and Gertrude have all started making an effort to more or less home-school all of the kids, which has gone... well enough, I suppose. However, things have recently taken a weird turn since Jon keeps giving everyone the answers to assignments/tests via telepathy.
Jon: Whoa, you can make tea all by yourself, Martin!? Martin: Yeah, I’ve been doing it by myself since I was a toddler. I can also do laundry, mop floors, vacuum, and cook a few things, too! Tim: Wow, that’s really cool, Martin! I wish I could do stuff like that. Gertrude, off to the side: *Gives Peter a horrified look* I’m sorry, but did Martin just say he’s been making tea on his own since he was a toddler? Peter:  ╮(╯ _╰ )╭  Unfortunately, I’m severely depressed.
Yeeeeeeeah, Martin’s in a similar childhood situation to his canon one, but at least there are people actually willing to help him out of it in this universe. Also, Peter will clean himself up at some point here, he’s just still dealing with more or less disowning himself from his family and learning hoe to not be so lonely.
Speaking Of Which, the Lukas family are pretty big antagonists in this AU, primarily through Peter’s mother (I’ll come up with a name for her later if I can’t find it on the wiki), who is trying to kidnap Martin and more or less feed him to the Lonely so Peter will get over his “childish feelings” and return to being her favorite child.
And yes, she DOES accidentally kidnap Jon instead at some point... this kid can literally not avoid getting kidnapped.
I like to think Mike and Julia are really good friends in this AU, being the closest in age and all. They hang out a lot since their dads are both so chill and won’t get upset about it, the two of them mostly just playing video games, watching movies, and biking around their respective neighborhoods together.
(Also they may or may not be responsible for a statement that involves a woman seeing a “flying wolf” passing over London... they’ve yet to confess to it, but Elias is dead certain they’re behind the incident.)
The worms incident is 100% Jane’s secret worm collection getting fucking loose... she was keeping them in the walls “for safe keeping” and No One Fucking Knew, not even Elias, until Jon saw a spider, punched the wall, and Revealed them.
Jon and Tim got their scars because Jane lost control of the worms and they burrowed into the kids. Cue a very panicked 999 call from someone in the institute and Child Services almost getting involved, but Elias managed to cover it up.
Afterwards, Jon is incredibly self-conscious about his worm scars, but Martin tells him “now we both have freckles!” and it honestly makes him feel a little better about the whole thing.
Also Adelard makes an effort to track down a child psychologist/counselor with institute ties so he can get Jane some therapy/help controlling her powers. He loves her to the moon and back, and he’s terrified of her getting traumatized by what she accidentally did.
During the incident, a Notthem gets loose from Artifact Storage and attacks Sasha, but seeing as Sasha is of the Web and the Notthem is connected to a Web artifact, it only manages to really hurt her, but thankfully not kill her. She ends up hospitalized for a few weeks, but comes out fine later on. The table mysteriously disappears afterwards, and no one knows if it was Gertrude or Annabelle’s doing, but either way, the kids never have to deal with a Notthem again.
At some point I wanna get into Jon’s paranoia in season 2 for this AU, but I’m considering changing it from being because of the Jane Prentiss issue to be because of Mr. Spider almost killing him. I dunno how exactly it’ll play out, but I think it has a lot of potential!
Okay, before I end this post full of weird rambling ideas for the AU, I wanna make a list of the powers that the kids have at the time of the story “starting”/the ones they develop down the line because Jonny Sims himself said that all avatars have different powers, and I really wanna infodump on my thoughts for the kids!
Current powers of Jonathan Sims-Bouchard: Can simply know things whenever he wants to (so long as the Eye lets him, but the Eye sometimes keeps him from knowing anything he isn’t mature enough to handle), can compel people to tell him things (the other kids are better at resisting it, and so are other people touched by the Eye), can survive on very little food if he’s fed mostly statements/other people’s trauma, can non-consensually feel the pain and emotions of the people around him, has some weak telepathy powers, and he can subconsciously summon tape recorders.
Future powers of Jonathan Sims-Bouchard: Increased healing abilities, can know most anything if he tries, ability to resist other Eye avatars’ compulsions, can survive purely off of statements/other people’s trauma, can choose whether or not to feel the pain and emotions of the people around him, has much stronger telepathy powers than before, can force himself into people’s minds and read their thoughts, and he can summon tape recorders at will (though some still show up without his knowledge sometimes).
Current powers of Martin Blackwood-Lukas: Can disappear into the Fog for several hours at a time (he cannot be seen by anyone but other Lonely avatars while in the fog), can summon clouds of fog that he can momentarily hide things in (including people), can “banish” most anyone into the fog, and has “Sea Captain Eyes” (he knows where the Tundra is at all times, and can lead someone to it without a map or compass).
Future powers of Martin Blackwood-Lukas: Can change his hair color at will (only to red, white, and a mix of the two colors), can see much better in the Fog and can find anyone he’s pushed into it, can more or less teleport using the Fog, and he has what’s more or less a pocket dimension of fog for storage/hiding his friends from danger (think the inside of Gems in Steven Universe).
Current powers of Tim Stoker-Orsinov: Can make small bipedal toys “come to life” for a few minutes at a time (they can’t talk or communicate; only move around and perform small tasks/dances), can tell when a Notthem is masquerading as someone else, is supernaturally talented at gymnastics, and can dance alongside the creatures of the Stranger without being fully corrupted by them.
Future powers of Tim Stoker-Orsinov: Better control over the powers he already has as well as a high tolerance for the Spiral.
Current powers of Danny Stoker-Orsinov: Can order around creatures of the Stranger against their will, can tell when a Notthem is masquerading as someone else, can dance alongside the creatures of the Stranger without being fully corrupted by them, is supernaturally talented at gymnastics, and can change his voice to anything he likes (not always intentionally, though).
Future powers of Danny Stoker-Orsinov: Can more or less “teleport” to other circus locations by walking into theaters, can now change his voice to whatever he likes with his knowledge and consent, can take over as the Stranger’s ringmaster if necessary, can trigger a mesmerizing dance whenever he’d like, and has a high tolerance for the Spiral.
Current powers of Sasha James-Cane: Can communicate with spiders and have them send messages to other Web avatars, can read minds if she tries really hard, can “trap“ other entities in large webs that she can summon (takes a lot of energy), and she has Spider-Man-like abilities (can walk on walls and ceilings, can carry much more than her weight should allow, etc).
Future powers of Sasha James-Cane: Can now read minds without too much effort, can navigate almost any area that’s being controlled/influenced by the Web, can create webs without nearly as much effort as before, can transform her body to have more arms, legs, and eyes, and she now has venomous fangs (which can thankfully be controlled and/or hidden).
Current powers of Alice “Daisy” Tonner: Can turn into a wolf at will/when she’s especially emotional, can smell blood from several miles away, and has supernatural senses/physical abilities.
Future powers of Alice “Daisy” Tonner: Can now track most any monster she’s hunting once she gets at least one good look at them, can communicate with other Hunters via howling, and can navigate the Buried if needed (though this is very triggering for her and will cause her to pass out afterwards).
Current powers of Julia Montauk: Can turn into a wolf at will/when she’s especially emotional, can smell blood from several miles away, has supernatural senses/physical abilities, can track most any monster if she knows their name, can communicate with other Hunters via howling, and she can shift into a bipedal werewolf when she feels like she’s in danger.
Future powers of Julia Montauk: All of her previous powers have drastically improved, plus she has better control of them now.
Current powers of Basira Hussain: She has common fucking sense, something almost none of the other children have.
Future powers of Basira Hussain: She common sense AND she has a werewolf GF now. :) ((No dating for the babies, not until they’re at least teenagers))
Current powers of Melanie King-Grifter: Can listen to Grifter’s Bone without being damaged in any way, the music of Grifter’s Bone makes her powers exemplified for a period of time after she listens to it, the smell of blood triggers her to become violent, she can summon sharp weapons (knives, swords, etc) from thin air, and she can see a red aura around other people who have been marked by the Slaughter.
Future powers of Melanie King-Grifter: She has much better control of her abilities now, she can perform Grifter’s Bone songs for people and keep them from dying/going feral, and she can now also summon other weapons from thin air (guns, baseball bats, etc).
Current powers of Oliver Banks: Can see people’s deaths a week in advance via his dreams, he sees dark tentacles around people who are going to die soon, can see but not talk to ghosts, and he can smell death on anyone who’s undead/controlling other people’s bodies.
Future powers of Oliver Banks: Can raise the dead and control them to do his bidding (takes a lot of energy), can speak cat (not End related; Admiral related), and he can cause people to die within the week if he touches them in his dreams.
Current powers of Georgie Barker: Can see a “death countdown” over people who are going to die within the next thirty days, doesn’t feel any fear whatsoever, can see but not talk to ghosts, and she sees a dark sludge staining the clothes of people who have been marked by the End.
Future powers of Georgie Barker: Can bring people back to life for a minute or so by touching them (think Pushing Daisies type powers), can speak cat (not End related; Admiral is best cat dad), and she can communicate with ghosts much better now.
Current powers of Jane Prentiss-Dekker: Can summon bugs of most kinds from her mouth and under her fingernails, can communicate with bugs, and can fight off most diseases without any trouble.
Future powers of Jane Prentiss-Dekker: Can now completely control bugs via a hive mind effect, can summon bugs from anywhere on her body, has much stronger healing abilities than Jon, and she can see invisible bugs crawling on the skin of those who the Corruption wants her to get rid of (it’s hard for her not to give in to it’s desires).
Current powers of Mike Crew-Fairchild: Can levitate/fly at will, can summon clouds of any kind (rain, thunder, snow, etc) in any conditions, has much higher resistance to the weather/temperature, and he can “banish” people into the Vast at will.
Future powers of Mike Crew-Fairchild: Same as before, but with slightly better control than he had as a teenager.
Current powers for Helen Richardson-Shelley: Can change the world around her to be more like the Spiral (adding more doors, changing the colors of things, causing hallucinations, etc), can change any door into a doorway into the Spiral, and she can amplify her voice (very hard to control as a baby).
Future powers for Helen Richardson-Shelley: Can now summon doors that lead to the Spiral from thin air, has much better control over her powers and abilities than before, can morph her body to be longer and sharper at will, and she can “banish” people into the endless hallways of the Spiral.
((Holy shit, that took awhile))
Anyways, here’s a playlist I made for the AU, feel free to scream at me for my very weird taste in music: Pinky Swear That You Won’t Go Changing

Bad Guy
Summary: You experience another night out in your new hometown. One that has you reaching for a drink, and maybe ending with a certain someone between your legs.
Warnings: Drinking, cursing, and (mild, well for me) fucking.
A/N: This is a submisstion for @amanda-teaches 2k Writer + Reader Challenge. My prompt was “Everyone keeps telling me you’re the bad guy.” This was really fun to write. Thank you for letting me participate in this! And I hope you really enjoy this one. :) It’s pretty light hearted. As most of you know, I will no longer post my writing on Tumblr, i’ll just be sticking to my other platforms now. If you wanna check me out i’ll be on AO3, mostly. This is my final closing. :)
Tumblr media
The night was turning crisp, a heavy contrast to what it had been that afternoon.
It had been humid and overbearingly hot; too scorching for a late August summer.
It was around six o’clock when the temperature had dropped a sudden ten degrees. Now it was pleasant, and those that had hidden away all day in their air conditioned homes, finally decided to venture out into the cooling air.
There was an intense misconception about New York City that not many understood, not until they experienced it first hand, at least.
Sure, it was beautiful in its bright lights and air that seemed to ooze hope for everyone’s future. It gave off a vibe that made you admit, that yeah, it kind of was like the movies.
Except that it wasn’t.
From afar, it was quite the spectacular, but as you narrowed down and took a closer look, you’d see it for what it really was.
The brownstone buildings that housed the speakeasies and restaurants on the ground floor; they were beautiful, surly.
So were the homes across the streets, with their lights still on.
The streets, they were nice too.
People stood all around, greeting new friends and old ones, talking about which place they would go to next or which bar.
You liked the village. It had its pros and cons, but at the end of the day, you were glad you settled for that fifteen hundred dollar studio on the first floor.
It had a nice view of the deli and the prestigious restaurant across the street, and it was a brownstone.
Yeah, all of that was really nice.
Except when you took a closer look and realized that even the prettiest of things had its faults.
Those streets filled with smiles and laughter also had trash bags piled up every ten feet and on every corner.
Those restaurants and speakeasies - the brownstones were older so the walls outside the building were washed out, aged.
The air also had a strange, but yet addicting, smell.
It was a mixture of all the restaurants around mixed with booze.
The stairs that led down into the restaurant entrances were old and rusted.
The ATMs that lounged outside each one - because that’s right, most of them only take fucking cash - six out of ten of them were always out of service and served as nothing but mediocre décor next to the window.
Heavy graffiti lined their sides.
The doors to the restaurants were older, too. Some of them never even closed properly or were too damn heavy.
And your apartment...it was perfect.
You’d have to settle into become a minimalist to even fit your bed inside.
The flooring was also old and scratched and the walls needed a new paint job. But it wasn’t too bad. It could’ve been worst.
But you loved it.
You loved the feeling of the city around you, and you loved how you had made your new friends so easily after moving in from your old home in little ole’ Ohio.
You loved going to bed being able to hear the life outside, the laughters and sound of people making new memories and falling in love.
And those restaurants and speakeasies that looked flawed up close, they were anything but inside.
The owners  were always so imaginative. The lighting was always warm, there were always people inside enjoying life and the food- in every single one of them.
Because, that’s right, all their food were good food.
New York City was beautifully flawed.
It was just what you were looking for.
You think this to yourself for the hundredth time since you moved here as you walk down the street towards a new bar you hadn’t been to yet.
You pass by locals as well as tourists and it’s nice.
You’re about to cross the street when you see a couple getting out of their little apartment.
Your heart warms as you see the man take the girl’s hand in his, both of them giggling as they prepare for a night out of making memories.
You feel your phone vibrate as you arrive to the other side of the intersection.
You hear a car horn in the distant and a nice summer breeze blow in through your hair.
You open your lock screen.
Nat
You here yet?
You quickly type away a message while also trying to avoid walking into others coming in the opposite direction as you.
You hold tighter onto your bag as it bumps into a girl, your small heels clacking beneath your feet.
You open your map to see the distance of the location and then reply back to her.
I’m a block away.
You see it from where you’re standing and it had it a decent sized line to get inside.
Budapëis
It read in white letters on the blackout windows.
You sped up a bit as you got closer, your excitement growing in your belly.
It doesn’t take much longer after you’ve been in line to realize it was actually moving pretty quickly.
A larger and dark man greets you at the entrance and you hand him your ID which he quickly scans. He gives it back to you and you thank him.
Inside the bar was loud. The people chatted away happily and the music thrummed in your bones. It was also very dark, the only light being the orange glows of the candles on some of the tables and the dimmed warm lights hanging above.
You watched as the cute male bartenders worked proficiently and sync, but also making sense to make small talk with each client as much as they could over the loud noise.
A girl says excuse me but still manages to nudge into you.
Spinning your head around, you realize there are no more seats left to sit and it makes sense why half of the people were all standing around and huddled like cattle.
Oh boy.
You feel a tug on your arm and you spin around to see Nat holding a Martini in her right hand, her left arm going in for an immediate hug.
“You made it!” She says.
“Of course!” You hope she can hear you.
She pulls away and tugs you towards her, “Come on, we’re all in the back.”
You let her lead you to the “back” which is really just a small space in the corner of the bar.
You immediately recognize Steve, Sam, and Wanda from afar.
“Oh, hey, you made it!” Steve yells, grabbing you in a tight hug.
“Hey, Y/N” “Oh, hey.” Sam and Wanda greet you.
“Hi, sorry I took a bit long. I was doing laundry.”
“Ha.” Sam snorts out loud, “come on you need a drink.” He adds.
“I will, I will —“ you dart your eyes to his own cup and point, “what’s that?”
“New York sour. Tastes like shit. Wanna try?” He says way too excitedly.
“Sure.” He hands you his glass and you take a sip.
You barely have the tip of the glass all the way out of your mouth when a body hits you on your side, making you stumble.
The drink doesn’t spill crazily, but it’s enough to get on your hand and to leave it sticky, leaving you annoyed.
You’re also not too fond of the face full of hair you just got and the elbow that keeps nudging into the side of your rips.
You stumble a few centimeters to the left, because seriously, it’s not like you have an option right now.
You look over to the girl who is now laughing and talking exceptionally loud with Nat and all your friends.
Did they really not see that?
But you wouldn’t blame them, there was barely any light in the place anyway.
If it weren’t for Sam reaching over the girl’s head to grab your glass, you’d be certain he had forgotten all about you.
You hand it back, cringing as you try not to elbow the girl in the face.
Sure, she was rude, but you weren’t going to return that sentiment.
“What’d you think, Y/N?” Sam shouts to you.
It’s then, finally, when the girl looks over at you.
She was drop dead gorgeous. At least 5’9. Her hair was a natural light brown and her eyes a piercing green.
Clearly a model trying to make it big in the city.
Her face is emotionless at first but then she attempts a smile.
You feel awkward under her gaze, awaiting an apology when Sam pulls you around.
“Come on, lets get ya something good.” He says, dragging you the bar.
You follow him until you’re at the side of the counter closest to when you first came in.
You sigh, already dreading this night, when you overhear Sam ordering two shots of tequila and two lemons.
“Me and you, y/l/n.” He says, taking the glass from the cute bartender.
Sam hands you the shot and you both countdown together before taking it simultaneously.
You chase it with the lemon, and okay yeah, you feel a little bit better.
“Glad we finally got ya out to a real bar.” Sam smiles.
You shrug.
“It’s been a while. Been busy trying to work, book places.”
“Oh, yeah, what is it that you do again?”
“I’m a singer, Sam. Whole reason I came from Ohio. Hello?”
He shoots you an infectious grin.
“I know, I’m just messing with you.”
You sigh.
Sometimes you did feel like people forgot though, especially in a city with 8 million other people trying to reach the same dream as you.
You hang around your friends for a bit longer, finally, finally getting the opportunity to wish Nat a happy birthday.
It must’ve been about an hour now later and you’re glad that one girl was gone.
Whoever she was.
“Is Bucky still coming?” Sam asks randomly out loud.
“He said he would get here as soon as he was done with his shift.” Steve mumbles, looking down at his phone, a glass filled with amber alcohol in his other hand.
“Shocked he’s taking so long. Wonder if he knows Aubrey is here.” Sam says.
“He’s an ass. And a whore. He knows.” Nat screams over to the guys.
You look over at Nat and Wanda and you see them already out of it giggling while looking at some guys’ Instagram feed.
“I’m gonna get another drink.” You announce.
“Hell yeah you are, y/l/n!” Sam yells with a wink.
Steve elbows him in the side.
“Stop peer pressuring her.” He says.
“I’m not, she just needs to let loose—“ he voice fades as you walk away.
You sigh, suddenly feeling exhausted. You contemplated ordering some fries or maybe mozzarella sticks.
You fold your arms onto the cold counter, waiting for the bartender to give you his full attention.
It takes a bit with the amount of people he’s serving along with the other bartender.
Finally he looks over at you and he smiles bright.
God, so cute.
You lean your head on your hand.
“Hi, can I have a gin and tonic?”
He taps the table top.
“Sure thing.” You watch his arms flexing as he makes your drink.
Mmm.
He slides it to you with a wink.
“You on a tab?”
You tell him Nat’s name and everything necessary and he nods.
You sip your drink, letting the music drown and numb you along with the alcohol. Your finger trails the condensation on the glass gingerly.
“Hey, man.”
A soothing voice comes up next to you, greeting the bartender.
The bartender’s face lights up.
“No, way. Finally out of his damn shell.” The bartender greets him with a over hand handshake.
You slide over to the side a bit, giving them some space.
The man next to you orders a drink, giving the bartender his card and requesting a tab.
You feel the heat of his presence as he leans on his own arms  over the counter right next to you, and you can’t help smelling the delicious smell of cologne wafting off his body.
You don’t know if it’s the alcohol but you feel yourself biting on your bottom lip, and sticking your ass in the air, still dragging your hand up and down the glass.
But this time on purpose.
It doesn’t work.
You look over to take a look at the man in question and you swoon.
His dark brown hair was begging to be pulled and he had the softest of scruff on his face.
He wore a black leather jacket and jeans and shoes that looked way too expensive.
You drag your eyes back up his body to see a smirk, and fuck, he’s looking straight at you.
Those eyes. They were so blue.
You blush faintly, turning back to your glass and taking another sip.
You know he’s still there, eyes stilling lingering on you.
He takes his drink and then clears his throat.
You’re expecting him to say something when he leaves.
Your smile fades and you feel a weird emptiness. Rejection?
No that couldn’t be it.
You’re finishing your drink when your eyes drift back up to your friends.
Sam, Steve, Wanda, and Nat are all smiling.
But then Steve is smiling more and the commotion is even bigger as they spin around.
You perk a brow as you watch the man that was just next to you a few moments ago greet your friends.
Was that Bucky? The infamous asshole?
He was beautiful.
Of course he was.
You try to compose yourself before walking back over to your friends.
Sam looks at you disappointed, eyes darting to your empty hands.
“I thought you were getting a drink.”
“I already drunk it, dumbass.”
“Why drink there, drink here.”
You chuckle, your eyes darting to Bucky briefly who eyes you for a moment making a connection.
His friends were your friends too.
There was something strange the entire time, about the connection in the air between you two.
It must’ve been the alcohol. He was way out of your league.
But you didn’t understand the asshole your friends were talking about. Well, not that you really knew him that much anyway.
As you pretend to be intrigued in your conversation with Nat and Wanda, yours was actually focused on Bucky.
It’s like you both are playing a playful game of who can catch the other looking first.
You find yourself licking your lip...twirling your hair around your finger…
You swear he’s staring at your finger.
God, what was happening to you?
“Hey, babe!”
You heart Plummets into your stomach as you see the same girl from before (the one who spilled the drink on you) wrapping her arms around Bucky’s neck and oh yeah, she’s definitely sticking her tongue down his throat.
You feel your heart in your stomach and the strong taste of the gin in your mouth.
He pulls away with a moan and a slight grimace.
“Hey, Aubrey. What are you doing here?”
His hands go to her arms, prying her off of him.
“I came with a few friends and ran into yours. You haven’t been answering any of my messages.”
“Yeah, we broke up, remember?”
Everyone’s attention is now to Bucky and Aubrey as they watch their interaction.
“But come on, just one more night, one more good fuck for all times sake.”
A heavy snicker leaves your throat, but you quickly try to disguise it by pretending to wipe your mouth.
The girl’s head spins towards you and she peaking a brow at you.
She quickly ignores you and turns back to Bucky.
“Come on, Bucky.”
Bucky looks over it.
“Aubrey, Aubrey stop.” He says seriously.
She pulls back from him and they stare at each other for a moment longer before she scoffs and spins on her heel.
You turn away from the scene, suddenly needing another drink or at least some fresh air.
You settle for the latter, telling your friends you’d be right back.
You settle to lean back against the brick wall of the bar, taking in the sweet smell of a summer night.
The contrast of the silence outside felt amazing your ears, and the small amount of alcohol in your system only made it better.
You cursed yourself for being a horny little freak. But you chuckle to yourself as you pull out your phone. You couldn’t help that you needed physical attention.
You’re skimming through your emails when you feel someone next to you. You look up to see Bucky, his left shoulder leaning on the wall right next to you.
You find yourself smiling at his little smirk and you bite your bottom lip, looking away.
“You were trying to get my attention so bad before, and now you don’t want to talk?” He asks playfully.
You shake your head, but you still have a smile on your face.
You feel your cheeks grow hot.
“Wow, seriously?” “Am I wrong?”
You think about your answer as you continue to look through your emails, except at this point you were just trying to look like you were.
“No, but that was before I realized who you were.”
His smiled slides off slowly.
“What do you mean?”
You finally decide to put your phone away and you spin around to look at him, now face to face.
The look in his eyes are intense and you find yourself blushing. You knew all these things about him, but yet he had this aura about him, almost like everyone else was wrong.
Your eyes dart from his eyes and to his lips.
“Everyone keeps telling me you’re the bad guy.” You say quietly.
When he doesn’t say anything, you look back up until your eyes meet.
“Are they wrong?” He asks.
Your perk a brow at his answer.
“I—I don’t know.”
He chuckles.
“Exactly.”
You nod, pushing yourself off the wall. You take a deep breath, looking at the people on the street.
“It’s getting late, I should get going.”
Bucky nods, still not moving from his spot.
“Okay, yeah.”
You stay glued to where you are, your eyes darting back to his.
“Yeah.” You repeat back.
You watch as the tip of his tongue licks his lips. You feel the heat in your core and you feel the heavy beating in your chest.
“Do you live close by?” He asks huskily, looking over your shoulder.
____
You don’t know how it happened, but one minute he had you up against the public hallway wall of your apartment building - where literally anyone could see you - and the next he was pushing your jeans passed down your hips in your living room.
You groaned as your lips connected again, and as you pulled on his hair again.
He cursed into your lips as he cupped your center, feeling how wet you already were for him.
You whimpered as he rubbed small circles over your clit, before finally inserting his finger deep inside of you.
He pushed you down onto your bed, his left hand still fucking you. You lifted your left leg onto the bed and he groaned into your mouth as he quickened the pace of his hand.
You threw your head back, moaning.
You felt your desire quickly dissipate as he pulled away from you.
Bucky chuckled at your whine, but your disappointment was short lived as your watched him pull his shirt and jeans off.
You did the same with your own top and then your bra.
He was on you in a hot second, capturing your lips in a long kiss that had your toes curling against your blanket.
When he pulled away you were captivated by how delicious he looked. You also couldn’t help but swoon at the look he had in his eyes.
Endearment? You weren’t sure.
Your fingers trail over the side of his face as he continues to stare down at you.
“I’m not the bad guy,” he kisses you. He slides into you with a grunt, “I swear, I’m not him.” He kisses you again.
Your hook your left leg over his hip, pulling him in deeper into your hot core.
You pull away from his mouth, your left hand going down to his stomach.
“Fuck. Fuck.” You pant heavily. It felt too good too fast and you know he felt it too as he stretched his forearms on either side of your head.
A long whimper leaves his lips as he sets a faster pace, fucking you into your bed.
He almost looses it completely when he feels you reaching down to rub at your clit, your fingers hitting the base of his cock and his little hairs.
You feel your pussy tightening around him and you know you’re so damn close.
“Yeah, come on, baby. That’s it.” He coaxes you, panting desperately into the crook of your neck.
You feel the fire burning in the pit of your tummy and you know that with a few more thrusts and a few more rubs on your clit that you were done for.
The sounds in your little apartment were filthy. You could hear his hips snapping against yours and both of your groans.
He slowed down his pace as you felt yourself come undone.
“Shit, I’m cumming.” You tell him through gritted teeth, your face only millimeters from his.
He has a wicked smirk on his face and some of his sweaty strands of hair stick to his forehead.
“Me too, fuck, I’m cumming, too.” He says.
You scream as you pulse around his hard cock, not missing the way his own eyes squeeze together, a strong grunt leaving his mouth.
His hips slow down to a stop and when you open your eyes again, he’s already staring down at you.
“Nice to meet you, Bucky.” You say, running your hand through his hair.
Bucky chuckles as he leans forward to leave a kiss on your collarbone.

You've Got the Love I Need (Rosnali) - Athena2
Summary: Five times Denali and Rosé share their love with a love language, and one time they share it with words.
A/N: So excited to finally finish this! Writing has been so slow for me after finishing up the hunger games fic, but I finally got this done, and I hope you enjoy! Thank you so much to Writ for beta-ing! Please leave feedback if you'd like, I really do appreciate it and love hearing your thoughts!
Title from You've Got the Love by Florence + the Machine.
1. Acts of Service
“Denali, are you sure you don’t need help with that?” Rosé asks--or rather, she asks the pile of clothes Denali is hidden behind, as she carries an overflowing laundry basket.
“I got it.”
“I think I’d be more convinced if I could actually see you.” Rosé leaves the rice she’s stirring and helps Denali set the laundry basket down on the floor, clothes spilling over the sides.
Denali sighs, picking up a shirt and folding it before tossing it back down. “I should probably finish dinner before I do this. Ugh, and I still need to shower and revise that competition routine.” She rubs at her tired eyes, and Rosé’s heart aches. Denali’s had such a busy week at work that she’s gotten behind in just about everything else. Rosé offered to help her already, but Denali said she was fine, so used to doing things on her own that asking for help--let alone accepting it--wouldn’t even cross her mind.
“Hey.” Rosé gently rests her hands on Denali’s shoulders. “I’ll finish dinner while you take a shower. Then you can finish your work after.”
She sees the immediate protest in Denali’s eyes, the stubborn insistence that she can do everything on her own. And technically she can, but Rosé doesn’t want her to stress herself when she doesn’t have to. Rosé is more than happy to help, and she herds Denali to the bathroom before she can protest.
Rosé hums through the kitchen, organizing the fridge and loading Denali’s dishwasher, arranging all the food on the table as Denali emerges from the bathroom, hair still damp at the edges, her face soft and smile wide.
“This is so good,” Denali sighs around a mouthful of food. “Maybe I should let you cook more often.”
Rosé just laughs. She’s gotten better at cooking over the years, especially in the past few months she’s been dating Denali, eager to try new recipes that would make Denali happy.
They do the dishes side by side, bumping hips and shoulders, and retreat to the couch so Denali can work while a cooking show plays in the background.
Rosé reaches for the laundry basket and starts folding one of Denali’s towels.
“You don’t have to do that,” Denali says.
“I want to.”
“But it’s our date night, you shouldn’t have to--”
“I want to,” Rosé says again. “I like helping you out, taking care of you. I mean it.”
Denali smiles hesitantly, relaxing again as she returns to her work, and it fills Rosé with warmth. It’s special to help Denali like this, to take care of her and ease some of her stress, and it’s even more special because of how stubborn and independent Denali normally is. She’s not just accepting Rosé’s help, but her love as well. Love that Rosé wants to give, give in every folded towel and every dinner she makes, a love made of her care. Love that she hasn’t been able to put into words yet, thinking it was too early for those exact words, that she should wait a bit more to say them.
She finishes the laundry and when Denali finishes her work, they come together on the couch like two waves meeting. Denali snuggles against Rosé’s right side, resting her head on her shoulder, while Rosé slips an arm around her waist, holding her tight. Denali is half-asleep when the show ends, and Rosé carefully carries her to bed and tucks her in, leaving with a gentle kiss on her forehead.

2. Words of Affirmation
Despite the freezing cold of the skating rink’s locker room, sweat beads on Denali’s forehead. This is the first routine she’s choreographed and coached for the eleven-and-twelve-year-old group she just took on in addition to the younger kids. Before that she stuck mostly with five- and six-year-olds, who were encouraged on the ice by their parents and thrilled by the sparkly costumes and idea of jumping in the air. It’s fun, and most of them stop formal lessons when it’s time to move into the next age group. But there’s rarely anyone who would continue to the eleven-twelve group if they weren’t serious about it, weren’t in it to compete and win. They’ll be competing with Denali as the coach now, with Denali to blame if something goes wrong.
What if something does go wrong? What if she didn’t teach them well enough? What if she’s not even a good teacher at all, and all the things she did teach them are wrong? What if someone gets hurt because of her? What if--
“I don’t know what it is about the snack bar here, but their hot chocolate is so good--Denali, what’s wrong?”
Denali’s head snaps up to see Rosé in the locker room, two Styrofoam cups of hot chocolate in her hands. She sets them on a bench and comes to Denali’s side, eyes filled with worry.
“Are you nervous about the routine?” Rosé asks.
Denali nods shakily, drawing in a breath. “It’s…bigger than I’m used to. With the little kids, it’s a huge deal if they stand up the whole time. But these kids really want to be great, and don’t even get me started on the parents. I’m just worried I didn’t teach them well enough, that I’m a bad coach.”
It’s a weight off her chest, and it leaves her slumping in relief, leaning into the hands Rosé places on her arms.
“It’s okay to be nervous,” Rosé says gently. “I was a wreck when I started teaching and we had our first choir concert. But you’re an amazing coach. I know you’ve taught those kids everything they need to know. I believe in you, Denali, and I’m so proud of everything you’ve done. Those kids are lucky to have you as their coach. And if any of their parents give you trouble, they’ll have to go through me first,” Rosé says fiercely, squeezing Denali’s arms.
Denali wipes away a tear, Rosé’s words everything she needed to hear. Denali’s no stranger to anxiety, to the doubts and worries swirling around her head. But to have Rosé, to have those words of trust and support, is sometimes exactly what she needs to quiet them down. Rosé believes in her, and Denali can believe in herself too.
“You’re right,” Denali says quietly. “It’s gonna be fine.”
Rosé nods, handing Denali one of the cups. “Let’s have some hot chocolate and go out there, okay?”
Denali nods, the drink warming her just as much as Rosé’s hand in hers as they head out.

3. Quality Time
Ever since Rosé was little, she’s loved blanket forts. It started out as something her parents would do to make movie nights more special, but it quickly became something she asked for almost every weekend, or whenever she was upset. Something about curling up on the living room rug with blankets all around her made her feel safe, made movies even better and soothed any bad days she had at school.
The first time Rosé sheepishly suggested they watch a movie inside one, she hadn’t expected Denali to leap to her feet and run around the place looking for blankets and pillows. Denali had been in some nature scout troop when she was a kid--Rosé squealed at the picture of tiny Denali, teeth missing from her wide smile, wearing a vest and sash covered in patches--and knew how to pitch a tent, a skill she brought to their blanket fort. She used kitchen chairs and the couch for extra support, a canopy of cotton and flannel covering the living room. It stood strong and sturdy while they were nestled safely inside, and it became a movie night tradition.
“How’s the popcorn coming?” Denali asks.
“Almost done.” Rosé shakes the pot as the kernels pop while Denali tends to the hot chocolate, pouring it into two mugs--the one with little cartoon dogs Rosé bought so Denali could have her own special mug here, and the one with pink music notes Denali got Rosé as a just-because gift.
Rosé dumps the popcorn in a big bowl and Denali drops fistfuls of marshmallows into the mugs, bringing it all to the living room and sliding under the blanket fort.
The best part about the fort is that it’s just them inside. They leave their phones on the couch, and there’s no work, no stress, no distractions. Just them together, their attention fully devoted to each other. A time to simply be together with nothing in the way.
Rosé starts Stardust, nestling into the long body pillow perfect for fort nights, letting Denali snuggle up next to her. Rosé takes in her long eyelashes, her warm eyes, her soft lips. She takes it all in, this time to just be with Denali.
It would be a good time to tell Denali she loves her, but it’s so quiet, so peaceful, just their breathing and the movie, that Rosé doesn’t want to disturb the moment. Besides, being with Denali like this, wiping melted marshmallow off her nose, is a love more than words can describe.
4. Physical Touch
Denali has always loved touch. Her parents loved her, she never doubted that, but they weren’t ones for physical affection. So Denali treasured every hug or hand on a shoulder she got from them, and sought out touches wherever she could get them. Her skating coach’s arms around her in a hug, congratulating her on her routine. A friend’s legs thrown over hers while they lay in the sunny backyard. Holding hands and interlocking fingers with her first boyfriend in high school, her first girlfriend in college.
She always sought and gave touches in her relationships. An arm around their waist, a hand on their back, her head on their shoulder. Something to let them know she was there, to share her love with them. And every touch she got back let her know they were there, filled her with their love too.
Rosé had told Denali early on that she’s asexual, and it didn’t change the way Denali feels about her, didn’t make her want to stop dating Rosé, just like Denali telling Rosé she’s bi didn’t change things either. If anything, it brought them closer, brought another level of trust between them.
But Denali also wanted to make sure her touches were okay, so they talked about what Rosé is comfortable with, what her boundaries are. Rosé gets a little uncomfortable with hands on her thighs, but she loves pretty much all other touches, loves them just as much as Denali. Hand-holding, bumping into each other while they cook, cuddling while they watch movies—Denali loves it all, and loves receiving it from Rosé especially, being filled with her love. Denali’s favorite is when Rosé wraps her arms around her from behind, resting her chin on Denali’s shoulder. Rosé does it now, and Denali melts into the touch. Rosé’s been extra clingy tonight, and Denali knows it’s because she’s had a stressful week, busy with concert rehearsals for her music classes.
“Cuddles tonight?” Denali asks. The touch will comfort Rosé, but each touch will comfort Denali too, letting her share her love and feel close to Rosé.
“Please,” Rosé sighs, guiding her to the couch with her arms still around Denali’s waist. She lays on her back and pulls Denali on top of her, their touches not stopping for a moment. “This week has been so long. I swear I hear those choir songs in my sleep.”
Denali snorts, resting her head on Rosé’s chest and stroking her arm. Her touches are gentle yet grounding, soothing the both of them, giving and receiving love the best way she knows how. She continues the touches as Rosé talks, talks about how much her students have improved, how excited they are. She’s rubbing gentle circles on Rosé’s shoulder as her words slow down and her eyes drift closed.
I love you, Denali thinks. They haven’t said it yet, though it’s not for a lack of the feeling. More that they feel it so much, both in themselves and from each other, that they’ve been hesitant to turn it to words, waiting for an opportunity that would be worthy of such a confession.
Denali could just say it now. She doesn’t need a special occasion to say it, even if it’s the first time. But Rosé has been still for the past few minutes, so she’s at least half-asleep, if not all the way there. Denali can wait. She strokes Rosé’s hair, and when Rosé sighs in content, Denali thinks she got the message anyway.

5. Receiving Gifts
“Rosieeeee.”
Rosé looks up as Denali enters the apartment singing her name.
“What is it?”
“I got a present for you.” Denali has that almost-smug smile on her face, the one she always gets when has something she knows Rosé will love.
And Rosé finds a similar smile of excitement crossing her own face, eagerly accepting the bag Denali gives her. It’s not that Rosé has come to expect Denali to bring her something all the time. It’s not that she even wants Denali to bring something all the time, or that she sees her as nothing but a gift-bringer. It’s that Denali’s gifts, which might be tiny little things to anyone else, make Rosé feel loved. Make her feel known. No matter what Denali brings, Rosé loves it. Sometimes it’s something sweet, a chocolate bar with ruby chocolate purchased because it’s Rosé’s favorite color, shared between them while watching a movie. Sometimes it’s just silly, like the mini unicorn erasers Rosé keeps in a little bowl by her desk. They’re all treasured by Rosé, because Denali saw even the tiniest thing in a store somewhere and instantly thought of her, and it makes Rosé marvel at Denali’s love every time.
It’s like when her parents would surprise her with a new book that became a favorite, or with a new pack of crayons that she used to fill up her coloring books. The purest feeling of excitement, of trust and safety and love.
“Come on, open it!”
As much as she loves to receive the gifts, to receive Denali’s love, it’s equally clear how much Denali loves to give it. She barely makes it five seconds before giving it to Rosé, watching her open it with that proud grin on her face like a parent watching their kid on Christmas morning.
That grin is on full display now, and Rosé smiles too as she pulls the top off a box, one you might use for earrings or a necklace. Inside the box is a beautiful rose keychain, soft pink with gold sparkles. But the keychain is attached to something--to a key, and Rosé looks up in confusion.
Denali looks at her. “I figured it was about time you had a key to my place. Just in case, you know?”
Rosé grins. “You’re gonna regret this, Denali. I’ll sneak in your room at six am and give you a singing wake-up call. You’re not getting rid of me now,” she teases, but she squeezes Denali’s hand to show how much it means to her.
“I’d never want to get rid of you,” Denali says. “Unless you really do show up at six, then I’m taking that key back and burning it.”
They laugh together, and Rosé already plans on going there next week to surprise Denali.
---
+1
“Are you ready?” Rosé asks.
“Oh, I’m ready,” Denali says confidently, rubbing her hands together. “The real question is whether this place is ready for me.”
She strides into the boardwalk arcade, relishing in the bright neon lights and the hiss of arcade games spitting out paper tickets. Her parents used to drag her out of here as a kid, cutting short her quest to earn enough tickets for one of the big prizes, not just the bouncy ball or eraser you got for a mere 300 tickets. But today, it’s just her and Rosé, and they’ve already gone on the boardwalk rides and stuffed themselves with funnel cake, and now they can stay here as long as they want, clear the place out of tickets and prizes.
Denali hits up the skee-ball racks first, her and Rosé giggling next to each other as their balls fly up the ramps, giving into their competitive sides just a little as they aim for the 100-point slots in the top.
“Your aim could use a little work,” Rosé teases.
“So could your form,” Denali says. “Let me take you to the rink some time, I’ll help with that.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.” It’ll be another adventure, another night to enjoy, and Denali looks at Rosé, at her beautiful smile that still makes Denali’s heart flutter, and knows there’ll be no shortage of adventures, of nights like this.
She grabs Rosé’s hand and they race across the sticky floor, taking on pinball and balloon darts and Pac-Man, joking and laughing the whole time. At the end of the night, tickets spill out of their hands like tentacles, and Denali looks up at the row of prizes behind the main desk. She turns to Rosé and nods, and they pass out their tickets to the kids scattered through the arcade.
“Ice cream?” Denali asks. “All that winning made me hungry.”
Rosé snorts, but happily leads her to the ice cream stand. The stars are just starting to come out, little twinkles that catch Rosé’s hair, and Denali looks at her and says it.
“I love you.” She doesn’t need a special occasion for it, doesn’t need a worthy moment. Her love is something she can share as often as she wants, in words and in actions.
Rosé’s eyes widen and she breaks into a huge smile, pulling Denali close and kissing her cheek.
“I love you too.”

Sweet Survivor Ch.6
Kenji looked at the gift he got, wrapped messily with white tape and brochures in a quick panic. Then at the food he had warmed and placed on a food cart. He pressed his fingertips together and pressed them against his mouth, taking a deep breath as he rolled it down the hall to the big smooth wooden door with two brachiosaurs, necks entwined, carved on the door.
Ben would be there any minute.
He opened the door and sighed in relief. No heart shaped bed, no mirrors everywhere, just a few white heart shaped pillows and some wilting roses.
He set up the table with three covered plates, water bottles and pomegranate juice. He then set up three thick white candles in case the power went out. He checked outside to see the sun about to set, giving enough light for him to open the doors to the balcony.
There was a knock and he smoothed out the suit he had stolen from the left over garment bags in the laundry closet. It was a dark blue and fit a little tight in the shoulders, but he would survive. He wanted to look his best for Ben. He checked his hair in the mirror, pausing a moment to notice how, without the facial hair, he looked so much like his father. He bowed his head and went to the door.
When he opened it, he was shocked to see Ben had dressed up a little himself. He was in a thin blue sweater with a brown checkered vest over it and brown slacks a little too long on him.
Ben looked at Kenji in surprise, blinking as he held an item wrapped in a something made of leather. Kenji snorted and they both laughed.
“Raided the laundry services too?” He asked and Ben nodded.
“I wanted to dress nice.” He said. “And I really like the vest.”
“You look nice.” Kenji said with a soft smile.
“You too.” Ben said, looking up through his lashes.
“I…O-of course I do!” Kenji said, rubbing the back of his neck. “But you look…”
He trailed off as Ben blushed and smiled.
“So pretty.”
Ben looked away. “So uh, can I come in?”
“Yeah! Yeah!” Kenji said, moving aside as Ben saw the spread.
“Wow…” He looked at the window. “Is that safe?”
“I saw some of them going north. Darius said it was probably for them to get some shelter from the storm.” Kenji said. “So I thought we could at least enjoy the view before the rain hits.”
Ben smiled. “Yeah. I like that.”
Kenji held out the package.
“I got you something. I thought you might like it.”
Ben took it and carefully unwrapped it. He gasped and grinned.
“A book on South American herbal remedies and first aid?!” He asked, squeezing the thick book to his chest.
“Yeah.” Kenji said, looking away. “You were really cool with Yaz’s ankle.”
“I know I was.” Ben said with a playful smirk. Kenji’s mouth hung open.
“Uh…yeah.” He said and smiled at him. “So…I thought you might want to expand your knowledge.”
Ben swayed a bit and Kenji wanted to swoon at how cute he looked. He held up the leather.
“I found you something too. I had gathered some stuff for you when I thought you guys got out.” He said.
Kenji took it, eyes sad as he unrolled the leather to find rose-gold aviator sunglasses, the bluish tinted lenses reflecting the light. Kenji huffed a laugh before laughing when he unrolled the leather into a vest with chest and front pouches and zippered pockets.
“Whoa!”
“I got my pack back, so it’s only fair you have something too right?” He asked. “And the shade matches mine.”
Kenji smiled and leaned close to him. Ben didn’t move away, so he took the opportunity to kiss his cheek, pulling away to see his big blue eyes wide and cheeks pink.
He wished he could keep this image forever.
“Come on, dinner will get cold.” He said.
He pulled out Ben’s chair, the shorter boy rolling his eyes before sitting down.
Kenji lifted the lids off their plates, showing two pieces of lasagna and fresh salad with feta cheese.
“Wow, you made this?”
“I baked it and Brooklynn helped me with the salad. I didn’t know you could put steak in salad!” He said, serving Ben a plate. “Maybe for our next date.”
Ben watched him a moment before asking “Why do you like me?”
“What?” Kenji asked.
“Please be honest.” Ben said.
Kenji sat and looked at him. “You’re really cute. You care about everyone and have a knack for safety.”
“It’s called paranoia, but continue.” Ben said with a huff.
“Why do you do that?” Kenji asked. “Why do you dump on yourself?”
“Why not?”
“Ben.” Kenji said softly. “You’re caring, brave and a good friend.”
“But I still run and freak out.”
“There are killer dinosaurs, Babe.”
“Stop that.”
“No. I like the Ben who came to island and picked out the obvious strongest. I like the Ben who thinks of other’s safety. I like the Ben who, with a busted tailbone by the way, made his way to a hotel, shut it down and made a message for us to find, by himself.” Kenji said. “And I want to stay with you because I like you, not because I’m guilty or feel sorry for you. So…there!”
Ben huffed and went to stand out on the balcony, looking over the park.
Kenji followed him as rain began to fall in heavy warm droplets, Ben paying no mind.
“I don’t know,” He started. “If I can keep being this Ben. What about when we get off the island? What then Kenji?”
“I’ll steal one of my Dad’s cars. Or his jet. I want…I want this.” He said, wet hair flopping into his face. He brushed it away and took off his suit jacket, draping it over Ben’s small frame.
“I don’t know if I can believe that. But…” He looked up at Kenji. “I believe your feelings. I like you too, Kenji.”
He took his hand and led him back inside, closing the doors.
 *
They had dressed in the fluffy robes, hanging their clothes to dry as they ate.
Kenji told Ben stories about his adventures around the park and Ben had listed off herbs and foods he thought could be used for different health practices.
“Candy would love you.” Kenji said with a smile.
“I think my parents would like you too.” He said. “Like the son they never had.”
“Little early to be talking about in-laws.” Kenji joked and Ben snickered.
“Ready for dessert? I made this one myself.” He said. “And I warn you, this is my third attempt.”
He lifted off the cover of the third plate.
It was a dark rich brown loaf cake with powdered sugar and chopped walnuts on it. Kenji cut into the moist cake and place a thick slice out for Ben. He looked worried when Ben took a spoonful of the soft cake and tasted it.
“Is this?!” Ben took another bite, eyes shut in bliss.
“I found some carob powder and a recipe for a banana loaf and just substituted it-”
“I love it.” Ben sighed. “I can’t believe you baked me a carob banana loaf.”
“Stop it man.” Kenji said, blushing deeply.
“Kenji?” Ben asked with a smile. “Why are you all shy now?”
“I’ve never baked.” He admitted.
“Good thing you’re good at everything.” Ben said.
Kenji smiled and held up a stack of DVD boxes. “Movie?”
“Sure.”
 *
They were laying on the bed, side by side, pillows moved to the foot so they could watch the movie better. Kenji had given up, watching Ben look in wonder at the movie. They had lit the candles and moved them next to the TV and nightstands.
Kenji slowly moved his hand to Ben’s, smiling when Ben entwined their fingers.
Ben looked at him and Kenji leaned forward. Ben stayed still, but his lashes fluttered close.
When their lips met, they held there, just resting against each other before Ben pushed forward and Kenji returned in kind. The taller placed a hand on Ben’s waist, pulling him closer as Ben’s hands cradled his neck.
Ben’s thumbs stroked over his cheeks and he felt himself get goosebumps, hearing only their mingled breaths. He pulled away and pressed his forehead against Ben’s. Ben hummed happily and cupped Kenji’s cheeks.
“Did the electricity go out?” He asked, looking around to see the TV and DVD player off.
“Didn’t notice.” Kenji said and pulled him into another kiss, Ben giggling.
They laid together, Ben on Kenji’s chest, fingers stroking over the robe. Kenji had settled for playing with Ben’s still damp hair.
Silent and warm, they fell asleep like that, ignoring the thunder and lightning outside.

Connecting Flights w/Iwa
Summary: On Hajime Iwaizumi’s flight back to Japan, he meets an unexpected friend from his past who is a little hung up on someone else.
Iwaizumi x fem!reader/Oc || Read it on A03
Genre : romance, friends to lovers (wc: 2.2k)
Notes: Hiromi Miura is an original character, but readers are free to put themselves into her shoes! Coming of age fics are fun to write but I wanted to explore a world centered around adulthood that included a work life outside one’s significant other. Hope you can give me feedback on whatever world-building I’ve done. Successive chapters will def have more Iwa.
Hiromi Miura packed the last of her toiletries into her large black check-in luggage. Rolling the luggage out into the hallway, she checked her phone for the third time in ten minutes. Her boss, Hayate Hoshizora stood in the hallway waiting for her with her own luggage standing beside her.
“Where’s Tsuchida?” she asked.
Itsumi Tsuchida was the third member of their team of three and Hiromi’s room mate for the trip. She handled production and logistics so Hiromi and Hayate could write and shoot their articles on food history without worry. Despite her astounding efficiency with her work, Itsumi had a habit of being late.
“Itsumi is almost out. She’ll be here in a minute.” said Hiromi.
The three checked out of the small business hotel before going their separate ways for their last minute shopping. Hiromi wanted to window shop for shoes and cosmetics while Hayate set out to buy some omiyage for her family. Itsumi offered to accompany Hiromi on the condition they stop by for milk tea.
“Let’s meet outside of Time Square before 12 for lunch. I’m going to buy some jerky and maybe some dried goods. Do you guys want anything?” asked Hayate before they set off.
Hiromi declined. Itsumi asked for some jerky for her own omiyage.
As the two junior members of Hayate’s team entered Time Square, Itsumi noticed Hiromi was checking her phone again. She had been doing so whenever she could during the trip.
“Still no texts from Eita?” she asked Hiromi.
“Nope,” sighed Hiromi. Everything had been going smoothly just last week. She had been texting consistently with Eita. He even offered to call. She would send him photos of their first day in Hong Kong and he would eagerly reply.
Come the day before yesterday, he stopped replying all of a sudden. Hiromi had begun to worry that things had fallen apart without knowing why. Their last conversation was on Hong Kong protests. Eita fumed against the injustice, Hiromi agreed with him and nothing came after that. Maybe he joined the resistance?
“I don’t know what went wrong. I thought he liked me.” she moaned, “We have similar political views. Maybe I wasn’t enthusiastic enough when I replied to his call for justice or something.”
“Maybe you should just ask him about it.” Itsumi suggested, rolling her eyes.
“He ignored me for two days what else is there to say?”
“So why are you still looking at your phone?” Itsumi asked, with her brow raised at her co-worker, “Come, let’s go shopping to keep your mind off things.”
————————————————————————————
Hiromi and Itsumi had a penchant for hole in the wall restaurants. For their last meal, they asked to eat at a restaurant at the back of Time Square, nestled between narrow shopping alleyways. It was the first restaurant they ate in upon arrival and it would be their last meal too. They both ordered a bowl of wonton noodle soup and  a serving of bok choy shared between the three of them. Hayate ordered chicken noodle soup for herself.
The restaurant was small and narrow, not to mention humid from all the steaming and the boiling from the kitchen. Although the lunchtime service was quick and brash, the two did not seem to mind. The girls were well-travelled and cosmopolitan. They were used to environments different from the quiet efficiency of Japan. Hayate found it chaotic but the team did not get many out of country assignments so she took what she could.
Hiromi in particular specialized in writing about Southeast Asian diasporic (meaning a scattered population whose origin lies in a separate geographic locale) cuisine. Noise hardly fazed her but apparently boy problems did.
“Hiromi, you looked so forlorn. Are you really that sad about leaving Hong Kong?” she joked. Hiromi’s focus in her work was second to none. Her tolerance to mediocre young men, less so.
“There’s a boy who hasn't been texting back…” trailed Itsumi.
Hayate didn’t pry, but the girls opened up to her for just about anything.
“Oh, hmmm don’t overthink it.” she said.
“It’s ok, I mean he’s smart and artistic and he knows my friends, but I guess I wasn’t interesting enough.” wailed Hiromi in between bites of her noodles.
“Honestly, if he can’t be bothered to speak with you clearly, he doesn’t deserve your time.” said Hayate, sipping her scorching hot red tea burning a bit of throat in the process. Her eyes grew wide as her throat grew numb.
“That’s true, besides I feel like you’re more worried about why he doesn’t like you than the actual relationship.” sighed Itsumi, mixing some soy sauce, chili oil and black vinegar for their wonton dip.
“Enough moping, let’s eat and talk about something else.” exhaled Hiromi, raising her hand to call for cold water for Hayate.
The topic shifted to work. They were excited about editing the photos. Hayate couldn’t wait to unpack but was a little sad about going back to the office again. Itsumi dreaded doing the liquidation and desk work for their Hong Kong trip. Hiromi was buzzing with ideas for their next assignment and was hoping to pitch recipe ideas to the cooking staff at their next meeting.
Just before boarding, a familiar figure caught Hiromi’s eye. A tall, tanned boy with a lean muscular physique stood a few rows in front of her. He was wearing a white shirt and black athleisure pants. Iwaizumi from college?
The three were seated separately on the plane. Hiromi was seated near the back while Hayate and Itsumi were on the second row. As she got to her seat, Hiromi was surprised to find Hajime Iawizumi beside her, blinking sleepily at the seat in front of him.
“Miura-san!” he said in incredulity realizing that his college friend was right beside him in his Hong Kong layover.
“Iwa! It is you! I thought I saw you while we boarded.” she said, shoving her carry on onto the storage, “Also, do you really have to be so formal?”
“How are you doing?” he asked.
“What are you doing in Hong Kong?” she asked simultaneously.
“I just finished my time in LA. I’m moving back to Japan. This is my last layover.” he yawned, popping a breath-mint into his mouth.
“I work as a food writer and researcher for a publication in Tokyo. My team and I are just finishing up our assignment in Hong Kong. We get out of country assignments from time to time. I’m still kind of new, but when I become a veteran I’m hoping to get more regular trips.”
“Cool! I’m moving to Tokyo next week because I got a gig training members of a Division 1 Volleyball League! This week, I’ll be home to do some laundry and just get things in order.” he said.
“If you need help moving or settling in let me know. I moved to Tokyo just last year.” she offered, “It was crazy.”
Iwaizumi nodded and thanked her for her offer. They continued catching up as the plane took off and soon the stewardess began handing out food.
“I’m so tired of plane food. It’s all I’ve eaten in the past twenty four hours,” he sighed.
“This has definitely got nothing on everything I’ve eaten so far” she exhaled, “I can’t wait to go home, even my own cooking is better than this. I got lots of new recipe ideas to try too.”
“I thought you said you were a writer. Do they make you cook at work too?” he inquired. It seemed like her job required an awful lot of skills for one position.
“I can cook to some capacity. I don’t really cook at work, it just helps if I know how.” she waved.
They ate in silence, chewing through the mediocre airline food.
“By the way, I need some boy advice. Do you have space to hear me out?” she inhaled, gathering her courage before she unloaded her questions on her friend.
“Sure? What about it?” he shrugged.
Hiromi opened up about her latest romance and its frustrations. She gave him a bit of background on who he was and how they started the relationship particularly the wishy washy feelings about their courtship.
“Do you really like this guy? You’re having more questions and doubts than answers. That’s not really a good sign. You can go ahead and be upfront but is this guy worth it?” he asked thoughtfully.
“I don’t know. I want to give it a chance but each time I think about him I get more confused and anxious.” she sighed, putting down her utensils. She bumped her head against the chair in front of her.
“He also hasn’t texted back in a few days without saying why.” she promptly added, looking to him. Iwa jerked back, his arms in a flurry.
“Scratch what I said. I don’t think the relationship is going to work. It’s not serious enough for him if he can’t at least let you know why he goes off the grid.”
Her face fell, shoulders sinking into her back.
“Sorry,” apologised Iwa, pausing to empathize with her.
“I kind of already know this and I guess I just hate uncertainty suspense. I don’t know why I feel so affected to hear it out loud.” she groaned, massaging her temples. Iwa was not good at hearing about boy problems. He didn’t really know what to say.
“Why’d you go for him anyway?” he asked, thoughtfully chewing some eggs and shifting in his seat. The seat was obviously a bit narrow for his shoulders. Hiromi moved a bit to her right to allow him more space.
Her poster straightened up while she plopped her elbows onto the table. She clasped her hands together and thought for a bit before turning to him, her eyes wide and a tad bit glassy.
“He just ticked the boxes you know? I knew him from college and we understand the other worlds we worked in. He’s smart, artistic and apparently he’s been crushing on me since freshman year or something like that. I wasn’t seeing anyone so I thought I’d give it a shot.”
“But why are you adamant to make it work is what I mean?”
Hiromi shrugged her shoulders, “I can’t help but feel like it reflects on me. I feel like I’m not worthy enough when I can’t make a relationship work with someone who ticks the boxes.”
“I really hate dating and letting someone have this much control over my emotions though.” she growled at the chair in front of her.
Iwa had a small smile to himself, glad he was not in her place. She had always been the one better at giving advice when they were in uni together. He wished he could return the favor.
Before he got together with his college girlfriend, he was swimming in a lot of doubts about himself. It was difficult for him to speak about just anyone, but Hiromi was one of few who could coax the subject out of him.
“So how are you two getting on?” Hirom had asked him.
They were sitting together in the school cafeteria for lunch. Usually they sat with common friends and some classmates, but today they were alone which meant she could pry on Iwa’s love life. Even when Iwa wanted to talk about his girl problems, he had difficulty opening up. She saw it as her mission to initiate the conversation to help him out.
Iwa scratched the back of his head and sighed, “I don’t really know how I could be a better replacement for her ex. I’m not her first anything. I’m not any more good looking, or smarter or more athletic than he was. I’m not even nicer. I really don’t know if I’m worth the shot.”
His brow furrowed in concern. His lips were midway between a pout and a scowl.
She choked on her lunch. More often than not, it was Iwa encouraging other people and giving square judgement. Iwa was by no means arrogant, but he was also not self-deprecating. Hearing him speak about himself this so despondently was out of his character.
“Iwa, dating is not a competition!” she managed to say while pounding on her chest. Iwa handed her some water.
“I guess…” he mumbled.
After slugging down some water, Hiromi composed herself, “Yeah, her ex may have been great, but you’re great too! She likes you now which is why even if her ex is still in some of her friend circles she’d still rather date you.”
Iwa perked up a bit and smiled at his food.
“Just because you’re not her first doesn’t mean you can’t have a meaningful relationship right? What’s this obsession with being first? It’s not added value.” she said thoughtfully, putting her face between her hands as she leaned into her tray.
That lunch seemed so long ago. Who would’ve known that their next lunch after college would be a plane in between Hong Kong and Tokyo?
“Hey, are you still using the same email? Let’s keep in touch when we get back. I’m holding you by your promise to show me around.” he grinned, handing her his phone.
She continued sulking in half-hearted despair at the seat in front of her while she took his phone.
“Cheer up! I’m sure you’ll find someone in Tokyo.” he added, settling himself back into his chair looking at her.
