Bastian’s Age (a mostly educated guess)
reposting this bc tumblr ate the last version.
Let’s get this bit out of the way first: I am way too invested in minor details and solving mysteries that literally no one asked to be solved.
This particular mystery is “how old is Bastian?” (with a side of “just how long has ESO been going for, again?”, and “just what did Martel Hallix do that resulted in the whole family basically being erased from existence to one degree or another?”)
So, starting with Martel Hallix, Bastian’s father. We know from the Meet the Character segment that he was fairly high ranking - my HC is that Martel was an advisor, but take it however you want. So, we know that, and we know that Emeric was personally ticked off at the Hallixes - you don’t destroy a family like that unless the grudge is personal.
This is where the minor details get weird/a little too involved.
1. If we take 2014 (the year ESO launched) as the start point of the game, 2E 582 (the year the Vestige appears in Tamriel, following their first misadventure in Tamriel), that puts the earliest Martel Hallix could have comitted treason at 2E 563, the year Emeric was crowned King of Daggerfall, following the Knathen Flu wiping out the Gardiner royal family (you can purchase the Gardiner family home in Daggerfall, and the loading screen will have this tidbit, fun fact).
2. Inalieth’s dialogue and letter, plus later reinforcement from Bastian, Eamonde, and Clairine, puts Bastian at a very young age when he was placed with the Silvelles (in a move that was supposed to be temporary, according to Inalieth). This puts him somewhere around the age of three or four, as he would still have needed a dedicated nanny at this age, instead of a tutor or governess, which he would have acquired at the age of six or so if we take the Bretons as an expy of medieval Europe.
2.5 Bastian says he was very young when his father was executed for treason, but looking at the ESO timeline on the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Project (UESP), it’s highly unlikely that Martel Hallix was executed just after Emeric was crowned king. The whole royal family and most of the Breton nobles just got wiped out in the Knathen Flu. Unless Martel was deliberately importing plague-bearing goods, he’s not being executed for treason right at this point. (Emeric also doesn’t seem like the type to secure his spot on the throne by having rivals executed for spite or other petty reasons.)
3. If, however, we move forward three years to 2E 566, we hit upon an important event in the Covenant’s timeline: Ranser’s Rebellion. Ranser, a bastard pretender to the throne of Shornhelm, is absolutely furious that Emeric rejected his daughter Rayelle in favor of Princess Maraya of Sentinel. A whole lot of shit goes down that ends with Ranser losing his head, Rayelle vanishing into the fabric of history, and the Covenant actually having an official start date.
4. Lore in-game for Ranser’s War states that multiple noble houses were forced to fight under Ranser’s banner, although it’s never actually stated how many of those noble houses in specific were actually in Rivenspire, and we only know of four by the time of the game, one of which is Montclair, who’s an entirely different set of problems. (See: The precursor to Harrowfiends.)
5. Now, following a war, there are a lot of executions. That’s what happens to the losing side if someone can’t prove they were coerced (yes, proof includes hefty bribes). Emeric states that, at one point, Ranser’s army made it to the gates of Wayrest. If my memory of the region is correct, there are quite a few border gates that would need to be opened from the Wayrest side of things to let an army like that through, especially if a certain batshit king wanted to save the siege equipment for Wayrest.
5.5 Congratulations, it’s now entirely possible that Martel Hallix fucked up big time by letting Ranser through at least one of those gates (under duress or not).
5.6 It’s entirely possible this is all going to get nuked by Zeni/Bethesda, but thus far the timeline supports me.)
Now then, back to our regularly scheduled conspiracy hunting.
If we take each expansion of ESO as a single year - ie, the first game took place over the course of a year, from Soulburst to assault on Coldharbour - that gives us seven years or so from ESO’s base game to Blackwood. This puts Blackwood at roughly 2E 589, seven years (give or take) after ESO’s launch.
If Bastian was three during Ranser’s War, he is now, as of Blackwood, roughly 26 years old, plus or minus a few years.
There you go. That’s what I’ve done with my week.
