Late SSR/early SHIELD headcanon:
Peggy was originally slated to be the founding director, or at least in a much more prominent position, when the first drafts of SHIELD were drawn in the late 40s/early 50s. Unfortunately, the defection of the Cambridge Five spy ring happened at the same time, and America was like NUH UH like hell are we gonna let a Brit head up an intelligence agency on our soil. So to placate the government, they put Philips in charge, and Peggy didn't get the directorship until the late 60s.

oct' 03 x full of colours
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prompt: full of colours Pairing: tim rockford x f!reader Word Count: 1,530 Warnings: 18+ we've got our first mention of smut for the month, un-beta'd is the name of the game, true crime + murder mentions (no graphic detail), mentions of food, P in V, no contraceptives but this is an established relationship, wrap it up, mentions of consuming alcohol. Summary: tim, hitting a roadblock in his case comes home after work has kept the two of you away from one another too long. both of you could do with unwinding from your current work loads, good thing for walk in showers
x. masterlist
A/N: day three and no Marcus Pike... should I be worried? Or is he ready and waiting in the wings?
Tumblr media
The drive home was uneventful, his restored 1968 Mustang GT Fastback was smooth, its recently tuned engine purring as if content. Tim's focus was split between the road and the true crime podcast playing through the car's upgraded speakers, a modern touch in a classic ride. While he generally steered clear of the trendy world of true crime podcasts, this particular episode offered some eerily accurate insights into the cold case he was diligently piecing together.
Pulling into the driveway he was happy to finally be home for once this week at not only a decent hour, but before the sky turned dark. The fall weather had swept in, summer disappearing before he had even had a chance to acknowledge it. Work had brought him another case that had him burning the candle at both ends. Some nights never making it home and catching sleep between leads on the beaten couch in his office.
There was a crunch of fall leaves under his foot as he climbed out of the car. Full of colours, a multitude of fall shades at his feet and over the modest front yard. A blanket of orange and browns between shades of green of the neighbouring lawns.
It served as a further reminder that he hadn’t been around enough to even get a start on prepping the yard for the fall months and he’d put off your insistence at hiring a landscaping company despite a local one coming highly recommended. Your work deadlines had picked up too meaning his slack you usually picked up around the house was going further neglected.
Closing the front door behind him, he spied the dining room table littered with paperwork. Telling him all he needed to know about your deadlines. If you had moved your work from the modest office you kept in the spare room upstairs, one that looked out to the backyard and the lakes beyond, to the wider formal table meant things were just as pressing for you.
Tugging his tie loose and pulling it off in one smooth movement he called out your name, but got no response. Before any concern could be had he heard the shower turn on upstairs. Slipping out of his suit jacket and hanging it at the end of the stairs he made short work of heading up the stairs to your shared bathroom. A smile graced his lips when he saw the ensuite door left ajar.
Tess, his long-suffering secretary, had left him a voicemail earlier, reminding him about the outstanding expenses report that was due this week. He planned to knock that out tomorrow, but for now, he relished the notion of a quiet evening. Something that had become a rare luxury for him these days.
Tim stood at the threshold of the bathroom door, steam billowing softly through the gap. He couldn’t remember the last time the two of you had spent any time together where there wasn’t one of you with an eye on the clock.
Without any hesitation he quickly stripped, leaving his clothes at the doorway, slipping into the sleek tiled room he could make out your silhouette through the fogged glass doors.
He stepped into the shower, a warm embrace of steam and cascading water. He wrapped his arms around you pulling you against his body, his cock already stirring at the missed skin on skin contact. You gasped at the sudden presence but the familiar feel of his lips at your neck, his ever present patchy beard, told you enough to know it was Tim.
The two of you stood there for minutes just enjoying the moment, both understanding how rare these moments were becoming and very thankful for the walk-in shower that could comfortably fit three more people, and the two of you would still have space.
Tim softly kissed behind your ear, feeling your body relax as he continued to run his hands across your back. His fingertips tracing circles at your hips before running up to massage your shoulders. He could feel your soft exhales against his chest as he moved lower down your back letting out a content sigh himself when he felt you reach down and ghost your fingers over his stiffening member.
Turning you to face him he kissed you with hunger for you on his mind, while his hands found their way to your hips as he manoeuvred you back against the shower wall. Despite the heat of the water the tile felt cold at your back and you hissed. But it was quickly forgotten when his body pressed into yours as he deepened his kiss, exploring every inch of your mouth with his. His hands roamed your sides before moving upwards to cup your breasts.
You moaned into his mouth as one of his hands trailed lower, skimming over your stomach before dipping between your legs. Your body quivered as his fingers found their way inside of you, stroking softly with increasing pressure.
He kept stroking until he felt the tension leave your body before turning you around so that you were facing away from him, your arms braced against the shower wall. You could feel the heat you'd left behind against your palms. Bending you over slightly, so that he could have better access to you. He ran fingers lightly up and then back down your spine while placing soft kisses at the nape of neck and shoulders before finally pushing himself inside of you from behind.
You gasped at the sensation but had no time to dwell on it as Tim started to move slowly at first at a tantalizing slow and tender pace as your body adjusted to him. The shower soon filled with gratuitous moans from you both as the pace increased, highlighted by a call on his name when he let his one hand drift from your hip to find home between your legs, teasing you with his fingers.
He could feel his own body tensing as you arched your back pushing back against him. He was close, his breathing growing heavier as he fought to concentrate on giving you what you wanted. But he didn't need to focus for long as he felt your body tensing around him. You came with a low moan and soft cries of his name, your body trembling as you rode out the wave.
He followed soon after, his loud groan mingling with the water as he emptied himself inside of you. He pulled out, the sound of the shower water quickly drowning out any other noise that he made as he ran his hands up and down your back as he tried to catch his breath.
You turned around, your arms finding their way around his neck, “Hi,” you said gently, your smile signifying your happiness of having him home.
“Hi,” responded just as quietly, his dark brown eyes taking you in before his lips found yours again, soft and lingering.
“I missed you,” you said up against his lips.
“I missed you too.”
Tumblr media
Tim headed downstairs to the kitchen. He settled on something simple—grilled cheese and a salad. Comfort food. As he laid out the ingredients on the counter, he pondered over the case that had consumed him for the past weeks. It was a twenty-year-old murder case, cold as they come, but he had found something everyone else had missed—a faint pattern that suggested a serial killer at work. The only trouble was the red tape he was facing, halting any further progress that was so desperately within his reach.
Your footsteps announced your arrival into the kitchen. “Something smells good,” you said, eyeing the skillet on the stove.
“Almost ready,” he replied, flipping a sandwich with expertise.
The table laid, dinner served, you jumped up from your seat, “Before I forget!” you said as the sound of the scrape of your chair against the floor filled the room.
You returned moments later with a manila folder and slid it across the table as Tim took a sip from his wine glass, his eyes on you, “I thought we said no work at the dinner table?”
You gave him an apologetic smile, it was after all your rule, “I know, but you’re going to want to see this.”
He raised an eyebrow, his curiosity peaked. He placed down his glass and opened the folder.
A moment or two passed and you waited with baited breath for his response.
“This legit?” he asked looking up from the papers, “you’ve crossed referenced this?”
You nodded eagerly, “Everything is cross referenced and triple checked.”
He took one more look at you before he bowed his head and returned to reading, his furrowed brow and grunts of approval told you that your hard work met his meticulous standards. There was a reason cold cases made their way to him when no one else could follow the cold trails.
Finally he closed the folder, “When is this getting released?”
You grinned as you took a satisfying bite of your grilled cheese, “The episode goes live tonight at midnight, meaning everyone is going to know and they’ll have no choice but to lift that red tape that’s holding you back.”

You’re so Art Deco
Chapter three
Hey I’m sorry I was gone for a bit but I’m back and I have chapter three!
“So this is the titular Johnny Cage.” Grace smirked as she leaned against the counter.
“You must be (Y/n)’s roommate.” Johnny out stretched his hand as Grace shook it. “Johnny Cage, but you probably already knew that.”
“Grace, and she’s my best friend so you better treat her right.”
“Will do Grace!” He turned to look at you. “You ready to go, Doll?”
“Of course.” He held out his arm as you took it and he led you outside of your dorm building. “Nice car.”
“Thanks Doll. It’s a 1993 BMW 325i convertible. I found it at a junkyard right before I got famous and fixed it up in my spare time ever since.” He opened the door for you as you stepped into the car.
“My daddy always said you don’t want a red, white or black car. White and black because it’s hard to keep clean and red because it gets pulled over more often. Which I learned later wasn’t true.”
“Is that so Doll?” He turned the keys in the ignition. Starting the car and driving off. “What I meant to say up in your dorm is you look gorgeous.”
“Thank you Johnny, I thrifted most of this outfit actually. The only things that I bought first hand are the hair clip, the shoes and the earrings I’m borrowing from Grace.”
“They’re nice. Where are they from?”
“Vivienne Westwood. We both have loved her since we were thirteen. Her parents are more well off then mine so she got a lot of Vivienne which meant I got to borrow a lot of it.”
“I understand. Is there a store in LA?” Johnny asked, genuinely curious.
“I think there is, why?”
“No reason.” Johnny paused. “We’re almost to the restaurant.” You were humming a tune you liked on the radio.
“Oh sick. I love Italian food. It reminds me of when Grace and I would help her Nona cook. I enjoyed it.”
“So you like to cook I see?” Johnny inquired.
“Are you kidding?!” You smiled. “I love it! Sometimes I wished that’s what I majored in.”
“What are you majoring in?”
“Communications and Broadcasting. It’s basically like being a film major but more exhausting and you’re more insufferable.” You laughed. He chuckled with you as he turned into the restaurant. As he backed up to park, he put his hand on your seat and you felt your cheeks flush. “You’re better at parking than I am to say the least. Last time I tried to do that I just gave up and parked a mile away.”
“I’ll have to teach you then.” Johnny smiled as he got out to open your door and help you out. “Damn Doll, Monica Bellucci has nothing on you.”
“Thank you so much Johnny.” He walked with you to the door, opening it as you walked into the place and up to the host stand.
“I’m sorry Miss we’re not taking any-oh Mr. Cage! Right this way!” The host led you two to a table as Johnny pulled out your chair for you.
“And to think people say chivalry is dead.” You smiled as you sat down.
“For someone as gorgeous as you are, I’d move the sun if it was bothering you.” Johnny sat down as her stared at you. “So what do you want to drink?”
“Mind if I get a martini?”
“That’s a very sophisticated drink.” Johnny commented. “I like that.”
“Thank you.” You commented as you read the menu.
“Hi my name is Blair, what would you too like to drink?!” A young girl came up to you two.
“Hi Blair. She’s gonna have a Martini and I’ll do whiskey in the rocks.”
“Okay great I’ll be right back with those!”
“So Johnny are you working on anything right now?”
“I just got the script for a new movie but it’s nothing I’ve ever done before.”
“Really what type of movie is it?”
“It’s a romance.”
“Oh, what is it about?”
“It’s about a set of spies, who hate each other having to do a mission together. So there’s still gonna be action but it’s also gonna be a romance.”
“That’s really cool! I’ll have to check it out when it’s out.” You continued to scan the menu before setting on the lemon ricotta pasta.
“So what are you doing in your classes?”
“Right now I’m taking Art history, Radio and Podcasting, psychology, and cinema history.”
“Oh Radio and podcasting? That’s interesting! Do you enjoy it?” Johnny asked as you grinned.
“It’s so much fun! One of the things I do is I’m the night DJ, luckily all of my tracks are prerecorded or else I’d never leave the station.”
“Yeah I bet.” Johnny chuckled as he looked over you again. “You have such beautiful eyes.”
“You’re really too sweet Johnny.”
“So do you guys know what you want to eat?” Blair asked as she put the drinks down.
“I’ll just have the lemon Ricotta Pasta.” You smiled at her.
“Oh that sounds good! I’ll have the same.” You and Johnny both handed her back the menus. You took a sip of your drink as you started into his blue eyes. “So tell me more about yourself (y/n).”
“Well Grace and I are New Yorkers, we’ve been friends since we were kids, I’m twenty-three, I love cats, I like to read and watch films and television, I like drinking coffee, I love to cook, I love fashion, I have a younger sister, my parents are divorced, and I love music. What about you Johnny?”
“Well I’m from Venice Beach, I also like to read, and also like to watch films and television, I love to act, I’m an only child, I love martial arts, I love cars especially fixing them up, it was something I picked up in childhood, I also love music, I’ve been divorced twice, I have a daughter, I like drinking coffee too, and I’m more of a dog person, but cats are cool.” You listened intently as he told you about himself.
“You know how to fix up cars? My one friend’s dad was a mechanic, I always wanted him to teach me so I can become a car girl.”
“(Y/n) I could teach you, if you’d like. Depending on what car you have and what year it is, it should be easy.” Johnny seemed to be opening up more. “So you and Grace have been friends since you guys were kids?” Johnny Leans in, as he looks deeply into your eyes you can tell he is listening intently.
“Yeah of course, we’ve been best friends since we were five! I genuinely don’t know what I would do without her.”
“I can tell she also feels the same.”
The two of you continued to chat as you sipped on your drinks.
“Here’s your food you guys!” Blair dropped off your food. You guys were so focused on your conversations that you had forgotten you had even ordered. “Sorry about that wait.”
“Thank you Blair.” You both said in unison. “You’re totally fine.”
“Just let me know if you need anything else.”
“We will.” Johnny smiled at her. “You ready to eat? This looks so good.”
“I’m so ready to eat.” You picked up you fork and slowly started to eat. “This is really good.”
“You’re right (y/n), this is really good.” You two ate as he asked you questions. “Do you like to travel?”
“I’d love to if I ever have the money to. I have so many places I want to go to.” You answered honestly. “What about you Johnny?”
“Oh I love to travel. When Cassie was little and I had to film overseas, I’d always bring her something back.”
“That’s really sweet. I’m sure she appreciated them.” You smiled at the thought of him gifting his daughter little things for her to have. “My one friend studied abroad in France. I would’ve loved to go but my dad was sick at that time.”
“I’m sorry (y/n). One day I’ll have to take you to France. Do you know french?”
“I know some. I took it in high school. But I’m rusty.” You two chuckled. “Do you speak any other languages.”
“I know French. And the tiniest bit of Japanese.” Johnny gazed in your eyes again. He seemed to be enjoying the moment. “Do you know any other languages?”
“Well I know some Italian from Grace’s Nona. She’s from Italy.” You paused as you took a bite. “I can read it better than I can speak it though. All her recipe cards are in Italian.”
“Well being able to read in a language is important. I’m impressed, Doll.”
As you guys finished your meal Blair came to your table, her red hair shining in the candlelight.
“Do you guys need anything else or do you want the check?” She asked, brightly.
“Do you want anything else, Doll?”
“I’m fine, but if you want something else I’ll split it with you.” You replied.
“Okay we’ll just take the check. Thank you so much Blair.” Johnny spoke to her. “We really appreciate it.”
“It’s not a problem and I’ll get the check!” She smiled as she walked away. A few moments later she came back with the check and some of those mint chocolate candies. “Here’s this. Have a good night you too!”
“Thank you Blair, have a good night too.” You both smiled at her. Johnny pulled out his card and placed it in the booklet. As you popped one of those candies into your mouth.
“Johnny, I can cover my half. It’s fine.” You fished for your card in your purse.
“(Y/n) I’m not going to let you do that.” Johnny looked up at her.
“Okay if you insist.” You let him cover the check. “If you want I can cover the tip if you want.”
“I got it too.” He smiled as he pulled out what looked to be three hundred dollars.
“Wow, you’re a good tipper too. You can’t get any better.”
“She’s nice, plus I used to be server at one point so I understand the struggle.” Johnny laughed.
“Don’t remind me.” You groaned. “I do not want to think about that right now.”
“So are you a server now or were you at one point?” Johnny asked.
“Yes. It’s awful.” You laughed as he chuckled.
“I understand. I’ll have to book a reservation in your section one night.”
“Oh god. I look so different at work than I do now.” Blair picked up the check as you spoke. “Thank you Blair.”
“Really? I bet you still look gorgeous.”
“Please I look awful at work.”
“I don’t believe that.” Johnny stated. Blair placed down the check again and he put the $300 under his glass. “Have a good night Blair.”
“You too Mr. Cage!” He smiled as he wrapped his arm around your waist.
“So Doll, wanna come back with me and split a bottle of wine?”
“I’d like that.” You spoke as he opened the door for you.
“Then let’s go!” He walked you to his car, opening the door as you got in.
“Thank you Johnny.” He shut your door and jogged over to his side.
“It’s no problem. Anything for you (y/n).” Johnny got into the driver’s seat. “Ready to go?”
“Yeah I should text Grace real quick though.”
‘Hey Pookie! I’m going back to Johnny’s for a bit.’
‘Okay Pooks, have fun. ;)’
‘I will!’
Johnny pulled out of his spot and began driving. One hand on the wheel and the other holding yours.
“Would you want to help me run lines too?”
“Sure. I do have to let you know I’m not winning best actress this year.”
“I think you could, (y/n).” Johnny spoke as he continued to drive. Sometime later you pulled up to his place. It was just as extravagant as you I thought it would be.
“You have a nice house.”
“Thanks Doll.” Johnny parked in his garage and led you into his home.
“Mind if I take my shoes off?” You asked “I Grew up in a shoes-off household.”
“Go ahead, I was just about to ask if you would.”
“I remember when I lived with my mom, she’d said to me ‘bitch don’t wear no shoes in my goddamn house!’ I still live by that.”
“Is your dorm shoes off?”
“Of course!” You chuckled as he walked into his wine cellar.
“Do you prefer red, white, or rosé?” Johnny asked, looking through the bottles.
“Red is perfect!”
“Red it is.” Johnny came out with an expensive looking bottle of wine. “Let’s pop this open and we can start running lines.
“Okay, prefect!” You smiled as he poured you a glass.
“I’ll explain the scene we’ll be practicing. It’s a scene I’ve had trouble with on my own.” Johnny poured his own bottle. “You will be reading for the character, Olive and I will be reading for my character, Theo. We’re spies who hate each other and in this scene you are angry at me because I might have compromised the mission.”
“Okay I can do that.” You smiled as he handed you the script. “So I just read for Olive?”
“Yes.”
“Okay awesome.” You paused as you scanned your lines for the first time. “I can do this.”
“Let me know when you’re ready.” Johnny smiled at you.
“I’m ready.” You smiled back at him before your expression changed. “I cannot Believe you Theo!”
“Of course you don’t.” Johnny rolled his eyes. “It’s always what you want.”
“Theo, you might’ve just compromised our mission! For what? Some girl you wanted to sleep with?!”
“Maybe if you didn’t act like you hated my touch this would be easier!”
“We’re supposed to be pretending we’re married! And that does NOT say that we’re a happy monogamous couple!” You paused to breathe. “I mean Theo, did you think?!”
“You know what Olive?!”
“What?!” You were taken by surprise when Johnny kissed you. Pulling away you stared at him, a pinkish color graced his cheeks.
“I’m sorry (y/n).”
“It’s okay. Do you like want me to go?” You paused, grabbing your phone. “I can like call an Uber. Or something..”
“No, please stay.” You kissed him back.
“Okay. I will.”

A bit ago you asked for podcast app recommendations. Do you have any recommendations for podcasts to listen to?
These are all the ones I listen to, I'll add a little summary for each one if that's alright.
Stuff You Missed in History Class: This podcast has been going for over a decade, starting in 2008. The format has changed since its inception and honestly, you don't need to go through the entire playlist (unless you want to!). Each episode is about a certain event, figure, or theme from history with show notes that cite their sources, and the hosts are very upfront about where and how they got their information. Some of these subjects are two-parters, but that's the exception and not the rule mostly. I enjoy learning about new things from history or, if I know the bare basics of them, I enjoy learning more in depth information. My suggestion is to just scroll through and see what topic interests you.
Criminalia: This is another history podcast, but each season focuses on a certain type of crime, with each episode focusing on someone in that theme. At the end of each episode, the hosts also make up a cocktail and mocktail inspired by the subject that day. (The first two seasons don't have mocktails because they only realized how popular a non-alcoholic version would be after season three where they made mocktails to go with the "imposter" theme and they got really good feedback about it.) Some of the seasons are hit or miss for me, but even if I don't necessarily like the theme, the episode is still good to listen to from a learning standpoint.
DNA: ID: One of my true crime podcasts. I like this one because it focuses more on how DNA testing has solved cold cases using genetic genealogy. I also appreciate that the host doesn't use full names to protect the privacy of a lot of people in the story. She uses full names for victims and perpetrators, and some family, but people who turned out not to be involved in the case are given initials. My only beef is that she does so much research on the cases, but she doesn't extend that to learning how to pronounce some non-English names. However, otherwise, she does treat each case with a lot of gravity and respect, so. Idk. She's recently started interspersing solved cases with cases seeking more information on recently identified Does so that's pretty cool.
Dear Hank & John: It's a comedy podcast about death, where two brothers give you dubious advice and bring you all the news about both Mars and AFC Wimbledon. They're currently on a "we'll update if Hank feels like it" schedule because Hank is currently going through chemotherapy but they have 372 episodes to tide you over in the meantime. I enjoy it a lot because I enjoy the Green brothers' sense of humor, and on the occasions that one of the brothers is away for something, their guest host is always interesting.
Good Assassins: Part historical, part true crime. I've only just started this one so I'm gonna copy and paste the summary because I don't think otherwise I would do it justice: A spy story. A detective case. The mission was simple: to arrange the death of one man. The goal was to send a message to all Nazi fugitives around the world: "we can find you and we can kill you." This is the true story of an undercover mission to hunt down a savage Nazi murderer who helped Hitler’s forces kill 30,000 men, women, and children. The survivors gave him a name after the Holocaust: The Butcher of Latvia. The spies would travel halfway around the world to carry out the sentence. The mission wasn’t for one life. It was for 6 million.
Welcome to Night Vale: This was the first queer media I consumed since I watched Tara die in BtVS. I was tired of kill your gays so I simply didn't consume any queer content. This show simultaneously healed me and hollowed me out for all the other shows that could have been this good. I like each story line, I like the additional novels, and I like the weather. This is my comfort show. I start it from the beginning every time I catch up to the recent updates.
Good Morning Night Vale: The official recap show of WtNV. It's hosted by Meg Bashwiner (she voices Deb, a sentient patch of haze), Symphony Sanders (she voices Tamika Flynn, the former teenage militia leader, current City Counsel member), and Hal Lublin (he voices Steve Carlsberg, Cecil's brother-in-law). I feel like I'm hanging out with friends talking about Night Vale when I listen to it. :) I think if you like recap shows, it's a good one.
The Murder Chronicles: Ngl I started this in season one where it was called The Shadow Girls, which I started because it was advertised as a deep dive into the Green River Killer's victims instead of just being about him. I was interested because the host was in the same age range as GRK's victims and she talks extensively about how scary it was for girls her age at the time. She also goes into how the police failed the victims and why, and also how it affected her. It also has a push for one of the victims to get the reward she was promised for turning Ridgway in. It felt like a cause. The second season is more about other true crimes which is... fine. Doesn't have the same heart that the first season did, but does include interviews with the detectives who worked on the cases, though, which I find interesting. Idk it's not really doing much for me anymore so I might drop it.
Scene of the Crime: Delphi: This is a podcast that (ostensibly) focuses on one case per season, but it's literally just one season and then a ton of advertisements from other podcasts from their company. That being said, they went forward with the families' permission, including numbers for people to leave tips to the police. Since they have the permission of the family (and interviews with some family members, even) it's one of the few that I'm comfortable with. That being said, I'm only subscribed to it still in case there's another update in the case. They don't seem to have published any episodes in a while.
These are the ones I listen to on Amazon Music, which are all true crime:
Cold: It's a narrative podcast focused on missing persons cases. It's got three seasons-- Season one is about Susan Powell, season two is about Joyce Yost, and season three is about Sheree Warren. They're well-researched and use recordings from the victims/perpetrators which is very interesting. The host seems to have permission from the families (at least the first season seems so) but even if he didn't, he doesn't make emotionally charged statements. He states the facts. I'd even go so far as to say the most emotion he ever shows is when he talks about why Susan Powell's case means so much to him.
Suspect: It's an investigative series about mislaid justice and the kinds of weighty decisions that detectives, lawyers, and jurors make every day - decisions that, once made, are almost impossible to reverse. Both of these seasons are incredibly interesting, including interviews with people involved in the cases. There hasn't been a new episode since February, but it's still a good show to go back to, I think.
Killer Psyche Daily: This podcast is hosted by former FBI profiler Candice DeLong, who I'd actually heard of (worked on the Unabomber case). It's a short, daily podcast (tenish minutes per podcast) where she draws on her years of experience to break down current criminal cases for laymen to understand, look back on historic crimes, and share insight on how the mind of a killer works. On one hand, it definitely errs on the side of police. However, she was also law enforcement, so it makes sense and doesn't really annoy me. On the other hand, she also has a lot of insight on the psychology of criminals, and she has guests on regularly who also have a lot of information to add to current cases who don't come across as pro-police.
There are a handful of others that I've listened to on and off but obviously they haven't really stuck with me.

I want to make a fake crime podcast so bad. Just like a true crime podcast but all the crimes are fictional. Agatha Christie, Detective Conan, Totally Spies, Scooby Doo, Edgar Allan Poe, Arsene Lupin, greek mythology, dungeons and dragons lore... Set the scene, introduce the suspects, present the evidence... and the guests have to guess who did it and the fictional piece it comes from. I know objectively this is a terrible idea but I can't express enough how much I don't care. I want to do this so badly.

Hinata Tattoo Shop Au headcanons?
Tumblr media
The further you move from the shop, the shorter the HCs will be, sorry 😣 but here we go
Yakuza princess. Has at least three “bodyguards” at all times whenever she leaves her house. They protect her, but are also effectively spies for her father.
Weapons dealer, jet setter, and business woman
Retail therapy is her thing when she’s in a particularly foul mood from work. It doesn’t solve everything but it can get her some new cute clothes that aren’t bloodstained.
When she is feeling more cheery, she likes to listen to true crime podcast and knit. Learn from other’s mistakes and get something cute in the end? Win win
Hanabi is her world and she does her best to keep Hanabi safe. LOATHES the idea of Hanabi being another pawn
Totally let’s Hanabi use her black card and yacht.
She’ll never admit it, but she breathed a sigh of relief when it was confirmed Neji would be the next head of their family. He’s not as old fashioned and cruel as her father, so she thinks things will move in a better direction under his command.
He got engaged to an Uchiha and the sealed the deal, A powerful alliance between two once opposing groups.
She has her own role and she knows it well. Marry someone to form a useful alliance for the Hyuga. Currently she’s leading on the simp of a man from the Ōtsutsuki group. They’re old money, corrupt as they come, m and he’s easy enough on the eyes.
He started sends her nudes out of the blue after their second arranged date. The man has no shame or pride, which isn’t a bad thing. She can blackmail him with these if she really wanted to. He’s an interesting weasel of a man in her eyes.
She has stepped on him and he seemed to really like it. even kissed her shoe.
She could do worse, but she’s still not committed to the idea fully and is trashing all the elaborate bouquets he has delivered to her office. She would feel bad but Shisui often picks them up after dropping Hanabi off. Something about them cheering up his guests.
Thanks to Sasuke bringing Sakura around a few years ago, she got a peak into the life of ordinary women and it’s amazing?
Where can she sign up? It’s Hinata’s mission to blend in and have a good time with her new friend. Hiring a body double really has given her more wiggle room but her conversation needs work.
“Oh, that was an attempt at a compliment? Seemed like an insult, but if you are sure-” takes hand off of switch blade in her clutch.
Has been informed that she spends too much by Sakura, but is still planning on paying off Sakura’s student loans and an all expense paid vacation for four from her as a graduation gift ☺️
Loves when Ino comes along because the more the merrier and Ino always has fun stories from her travels.
Also Ino finds a great thrill in hearing stories about Hinata’s girl bossing (the one she can talk about) and mean streak when she’s threatening people over the phone
Never tried food from a hole in the wall place until they encourage her to try it. She visits there at least once a month.
Hasn’t met a pair of heels she doesn’t love and has a walk in closet just for her collection

April TBR 2024--
Tumblr media
This next month is set to be full of rereads, hockey romances, and new to me books. It is also the month I'm starting a certification program so it will probably be a bit of a struggle to get through this month's TBR. I don't even remember the last time I've thought that about a month's TBR. I really hope I have as much fun with this TBR as I'm expecting to. I've really been in the mood for these rereads and these hockey romance so I'm excited to finally get to it.
Silver in the Bone by Alexandra Bracken-- This is just one of a few rereads this month. Book two in the series comes out next month. I originally read this one as an ARC so I definitely need a refresher first. Tamsin Lark is a mortal with no magical talent who was never meant to break into ancient crypts or compete with sorceresses and Cunning folk for the treasures inside. But treasure hunting is the only way she could keep herself and her brother Cabell alive following her thieving foster father's disappearance. Ten years later she's looking for a ring that is supposed to save her brother from a curse. It's based in Arthurian legend.
Teen Titans: Beast Boy by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo-- Another reread before a new book in the series. I remember enjoying this one slightly less than Raven's book, but I still enjoyed meeting a new character and getting their origin story. I also felt like it addressed an issue that isn't brought up a lot: male body image issues. We see it addressed a lot in fiction for girls, but there are boys who also go through this growing up. Plus it's beast boy and lots of green animals.
The Score by Elle Kennedy-- A hockey romance! I've been so in the mood for hockey romances this year. I don't know if it's because I found a few new to me authors and bought some kindle books for Christmas or what. In this one we follow Allie Hayes who is in crisis mode. Graduation is looming and she's dealing with a broken heart thanks to the end to her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just one though because even if her future is uncertain it sure as heck doesn't include Dean. It seems like he's going to pursue her after she puts him in the friend zone following their one night stand. I love it when the guy falls first or the guy is pursuing the girl so I'm looking forward to this one.
Stars and Smoke by Marie Lu-- The last of the rereads for this month. I'm so excited for the next book too. In this one we follow an international pop sensation named Winter Young who is brought into the world of spies when a major crime boss gifts his daughter a private concert with Winter for her birthday. Sydney Cossette is a member of the elite covert ops group who is forced to work alongside Winter to infiltrate the crime organization's inner circle. This was such a fun and quick read for me last year and I can't wait to go back into this world of glitz, glam, and spies.
Bad Men by Julie Mae Cohen (NetGalley)-- This one just sounded so good when I saw it on NetGalley. It's unhinged women at its finest. Saffy Huntley-Oliver is an intelligent and glamorous socialite; she also happens to be a proficient serial killer. Over the course of fifteen years, she's dispatched bad men--rapist, murderers, domestic abusers. But leading a double life has left her lonely. Dating's rough when your boyfriend might turn out to be your next victim. Saffy thinks she's finally found a truly good man in Jonathan Desrosiers, a true crime podcaster. This is a feminist thriller that asks if even a serial killer can have a happily ever after. My hopes for this one? Rich people drama and some mad women.
The Hemlock Queen by Hannah F. Whitten (New Release)-- The second book in the series is finally coming out. This series starts with Lore, who has a dark power and a hidden past, as we follow her into the intrigue of the Sainted King's royal court. The king and his priest manipulate Lore and have her spy on the prince in order to determine just who is killing the villages at the edge of the kingdom. We follow on from the events of the first book in this new one.
My Lucky #13 by Piper Rayne (Kindle)-- A hockey player who is going through a scoring draught is worried he's going to get traded before the deadline if he doesn't turn it around. Following a New Year's Eve with a woman, he has a waterfall of goals and knows he has to see her again. She wants nothing to do with him and he feels his has to change her mind. A hero falls first sounding story that I'm so looking forward to. I will say that there's a very obvious hockey error in the synopsis of this one and we all know I'm a little picky about hockey details. But I'll try to keep an open mind on this one.
Just Do This One Thing For Me by Laura Zimmerman (Library)-- I'm going to pull the synopsis straight from GoodReads since it's a Mystery/Thriller and those are hard to explain at the best of times: "'Just do this one thing for me.' Drew's mother says it more often than good morning. Heidi Hill has been juggling shady side hustles for all of Drew's seventeen years, and Drew knows that 'one thing' really means all the necessary things her mother thinks are boring, including taking care of her fifteen-year-old sister and eight-year-old brother. In fact, Drew is the closest thing to a responsible adult they've ever known. When their mother disappears on the way to a New Year's Eve concert in Mexico and her schemes start unraveling, Drew is faced with a choice: Follow the rules, do the responsible thing, and walk away--alone--from her mother's mess. Or hope the weather stays cold, keep the cons going, and just maybe hold her family together."

What is going on with these Thai actors? What is all the drama about, I'm so out of the loop.
i am so not a reliable source for this bc i just get my info from skimming twitter but skdkskd basically the last couple days a BUNCH of gmmtv actors have done some shitty things. i’m gonna say names and assume you know who i’m talking about bc idk you or what shows you’ve seen or what actors you know
so basically two days ago, there was a video posted with prom, mond, sing, and white, and it looked kind of podcast style where they were all just talking? and aside from the fact that they were saying some derogatory and shitty things about women’s bodies, prom admitted to having spied on a toddler in the bathroom when he was in high school (he’s nineteen so it wasn’t even that long ago), and the others weren’t exactly disgusted from what i gather, more confused. also white has done a bunch of other shit like make transphobic comments and made a homophobic rape joke with foei about first during safe house. also apparently foei reposted an anti-lgbt video to his insta story??? bro you work for the gayest company in the world
and then on top of that, mark the next day was overheard in a video telling prom not to worry because “it’s normal.” that’s one i’m least confident on cause it was apparently a rough translation and the full context wasn’t there ig but yikes if true. and completely unrelated but while all this was going on, a video of phuwin saying the r word and calling someone dyslexic resurfaced from a few years ago, but he posted an apology immediately and explained how he has since learned and blah blah blah. and also apparently captain did something?? but idk him and also dk what he did so
like tbh i don’t keep up with most of them, so none of this really bothers me on a personal level, but it’s like damn y’all fucking suck. where are gmmtv getting their actors, the sewers???

rating the podcasts ive listened to in the past month
havana syndrome - 10/10. spies. it's crazy scary but really good
the lazarus heist - 10/10. north korean hackers. comprehensive and they have some really impressive interviews
exit scam - 6/10. bitcoin scam drama. interesting story but they focus on the wrong things and drag it out
love janessa - 7/10. romance scams. also very interesting but dragged out and not as impressive
hot money - 7/10. economics of the porn industry. def recommend i learned soo much. the -3 is because it's hard to listen to as a feminist
missing and murdered - 2/10. very slow. very repetitive. barely any political context. i thought this would talk about the wider issue but it's just a straight forward true crime femicide thing and it made my stomach turn. i only got through 3 eps
death in ice valley - 0/10. chaotic and slow and confusing. i thought it was going to be about spies but it's just a bad true crime thing. i only got through 2 eps
the history of english - 9/10. technically ive been listening to this for 6 years but it's still my fav. not as flashy as the other ones and you gotta be into history

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators - Ronan Farrow
Pandora's Jar: Woman in the Greek Myths - Natalie Haynes
Killers of the Flower Moon: Oil, Money, Murder, and the birth of the FBI - David Grann
That makes 11 fiction and 16 non-fiction so 27 total.
I really didn't get to read as much as I wanted this year, but I did finally get around to the Shadow and Bone trilogy (and was surprised just how different the show ended up being to the third book especially) - the rest of the Grishaverse is on the to read list for 2024. After seeing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes film (in contrast, a very faithful adaptation) I also revisited the books and do think they hold up as among the best of the YA genre.
It was the year of non-fiction for me, and really, the year of the memoir. I do love an actor's memoir in particular.
On the history front, Greg Jenner was a pleasing discovery, I do enjoy the irreverent tone and unique approach - I also recommend his history podcast You're Dead to Me.
On the true crime front, Catch and Kill was a hugely compelling (but confronting and infuriating) look back at Farrow's reporting of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, showing just how deeply the rot in the entertainment and media industry goes to foster and protect predators. Killers of the Flower Moon was an interesting read after seeing the film, although I was surprised at how much the book focused on Tom White and played as a whodunnit as opposed to the film's reframing of the story.
As for my one true love, myth and legend, I've gone back to Campbell as it's a foundational (if problematic) work before exploring alternate takes - The Heroine with 1001 Faces had some interesting ideas about the role of female archetypes in fiction, and Pandora's Jar was a compelling examination on the women in Greek myth specifically. That made be seek out Haynes's fiction work A Thousand Ships which explores the aftermath of the Trojan War from the female perspective and while I enjoyed that overall, it didn't quite hit the heights I wanted it to. Still, her novel about Medusa is on the to-read list.
Pretty much everyone I know bought me books for Christmas this year, so here's to a productive 2024!

A lot of people show disdain for two dimensional characters. Often they are called flat and not as interesting as a three dimensional character. But I myself don’t really have a problem with two dimensional characters.  My favorite villains of all are both Hades from Hercules 1997 and Mandy (the black haired purple eyed mean girl) from Totally Spies. True neither villain have much depth. True Hades portrayal downright contradicts the original myths. True Mandy was never anything really more than the high school rival and menace.   But Hades is a charmingly sleazy host with an excellent performance by James Woods, while Mandy has a decent fashion sense, and a barrage of sassy comebacks, and a memorably shrill laugh.   Plus with Mandy’s lack of depth, it opens the door to come up with many interpretations of her character. Maybe she’s just pure evil (as the fandom mostly agrees), maybe she’s just a lonely rich girl (as some circles believe), maybe she’s not as bad as the show makes her off as (the podcast Totally Reprise goes by this). This could be fun for adaptations. You just can’t do this with three dimensional characters, you have to be specific in order to stay true to said characters.   Likewise if you look at the animated series, Hades had a lot of variety in regards to his villainy, be it trying to put the gods to sleep by making a play about himself, etc. tricking Poseidon into giving him control of Athens, trying to get Zeus and Hera into having a marriage crisis, taking advantage of the Tapestry of Fate to become Olympus’ Top God, etc. And even he’s not all that bad, he was kind enough to tell Cassandra how to bring Icarus to life and honor his deals with Medusa and Meg about turning the former into a human and freeing the latter of his service. Compare that to Ursula, who always planned on backstabbing Ariel. And his lack of depth is well filled in by James Woods’ hilarious and intoxicating performance.   Yes there are far more intelligent and deeper, and more menacing villains like Doctor Doom, Bane, and Poison Ivy but IDK villains like Hades and Mandy are more fun and offer lots of story opportunities.   A close runner up for choice of favorite villain has to be easily Darkseid. Technically Thanos is the deeper villain be it his love for death or in the MCU a desire to save the universe, but the “less developed” Darkseid is simply more terrifying and memorable, what with his hellish tyrannical vision and ruthless will to inflict it on everybody, and his menacing design (and sometimes voice).   Likewise some characters are simply better when there is a mystery to them, it’s unknown what their concrete origin is nor what their true motives are. It’s why Dracula and Joker are so prominent in media, there are thousands of ways to interpret their characters. The idea that Dracula in the original novel was actually Vlad the Impaler is not really an interesting idea, it’s more tolerable when it’s simply an adaptation. Although the backstory for the Joker by Tim Burton and Paul Dini is not a bad one, and is certainly more credible than Alan Moore’s. The Joker was just simply already bad as a gangster and the whole chemical transformation just gave him the excuse to fake insanity and make his criminal exploits more creative, it’s a lot more interesting than the whole “he’s crazy*” trope.   And in some cases adding more depth can actually hurt the character. There was a confession about how Rob Zombie’s Halloween and later seasons of ATLA ruined Michael Myers and Azula (actually there’s a lot of confessions about her as of recent) by trying to make them deep; and having seen both in the last month (as well as Halloween II) for the first time, it proves that just because it’s deeper doesn’t mean it’s better.   I wouldn’t say it “ruined” Myers, seeing as it was a different canon and already was there an odd twist about a cult and magic in the original series, but yeah the “sad and tortured” Myers as envisioned by Rob Zombie was far less effective than the original vision in 1978, especially when the points to make him sympathetic amounted to creepypasta tier wangst, and Myers came out more like an emo wussy wuss wuss and WTF was with the white horse in Halloween II. So the cereal killer had a sad childhood and just wants to be with his sis. Yawn.   But oh YEAH did the latter half of Book Three utterly **** up Azula. The Beach was okay. Seeing a normally menacing villain try to act in normal situations, those situations are always fun. If they kept the mom thing to that one line it would have been cool, “Hidden Depths” and all. But the revelation that she was a lonely girl who secretly wanted love but tried to achieve it though fear and then flips her shit when they betray her came out of nowhere and didn’t really make sense. Sure Ty Lee was scared but Mai was previously apathetic, HUGGED azula affectionally in their first scene, joined her because she was bored, and was not afraid to lash out in her in the Beach.   But the biggest problem was it downgraded her from a smart, resourceful and capable badass to the dreaded (and tired) generic psycho just to supposedly give her more depth and provide a convenient way for the heroes to defeat her. Imagine Zuko and Katara trying to fight the Fire Nation Generals, the Dai Li in addition to a comet powered, competent, and still persistent Azula all at once. That would have been epic!   But no the writers then decide to provide a copout suddenly say “she’s crazy*” and because of this she banishes all the soldiers like a moron, strikes out at Katara (and therefore already forfeiting the Agni Kai because the rules are you must not strike out at observers, a dishonorable move), and the final scene is of her in chains frothing like a “maniac”, what a disgraceful way to send off the one who conquered Ba Sing Se. Oh and of course, a typical one an one fight even though there was already a one and one fight with Aang and Ozai which also sucked.  I didn’t read the sequel comics, but what I heard online, apparently she devised a convoluted and stupid plan that for some reason involves kidnapping children, all to make Zuko a better Fire Lord by “controlling through fear”… even though controlling through fear is EXACTLY what led to her downfall the last time! Did she just forget what happened! Oh and the Search apparently had her whining about her mother, and this may be because I’m early to ATLA and it’s fandom at this point but I’ve yet to see any fans or fanfics who don’t make Azula all about her mother. Mother this! Mother that! We get it already, she has problems with her mother!   But I can’t blame the writers of the comics entirely since they had to go with bullshit canon, it’s exactly like how the MCU handles things.   Sorry for the extended rant, but Sozin’s Comet was really ******* bad. One day I’ll make a confession about how bad it was, including the Aang vs Ozai fight  But really, Michael Myers and Azula are really two different examples of characters who didn’t need to have (too much) depth added. Michael is very fine as a dark and malevolent serial killer who may or may not have supernatural qualities, and who people call “The Boogeyman”. Even the whole “Michael is Laurie’s brother” twist wasn’t terrible in the original 1981 Halloween II, it still didn’t explain exactly why he killed the other sister, Laurie’s friends, as well as the others in that same 1981 film! The Azula as shown in Book 2 may have been “two dimensional” but with her competence and intelligence she could have been the forefront of some very interesting future stories about political intrigue and all. As opposed to the finale and comics which just used the “insanity” excuse to put the character in different directions that had nothing to do with her. She could have been someone like Ra’s Al Ghul or Doom, a villain who can match the heroes with her wits and who has some “Hidden Depths” underneath. The Beach alone was perfect for that, show her being awkward and unable to socialize while being undercover. There was still more to the “two dimensional” Azula as shown in Book 2 than solely her mother or supposed “insanity”.   *Also neither the Joker in most cases nor Azula represent any real facets of mental illness, it’s just some bullshit by writers who don’t understand mental health.  Speaking of “deep does not mean better”... no, Zack Snyder’s Vision of the DCEU, The Boys, and basically any other “dark and edgy” take on superheroes is not automatically better than the MCU (as problematic as that is) and any lighthearted or optimistic superhero work just because it’s darker and therefore ****** deeper. Darker and Edgier is not something you do at a whim even for this. Superheroes are not just these dark and brooding tortured souls, the whole genre is just not some “profound examination into the bleakness or darkness of life” and the writers need to remember that.   Is a Superman who brooding at his alien nature and lack of humanity deeper? Sure. Is a Wonder Woman whose entitled, harsh, nasty, and thirsts for blood and battle deeper? Maybe? But just because it’s a “deeper” version of the characters does not mean it’s better, in fact is outright contradicts the characters so much you might as well come up with entirely new characters. Oh wait, that’s what The Boys did. What makes heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Sora (Kingdom Hearts) so strong and memorable as heroes aside from their powers is their hearts. Their compassion for other beings. The willingness to stand up for those who can’t really do so themselves. That’s what makes them work as characters. They don’t need to be three-dimensional. They’re the type of characters we either aspire to be, or wish were around to help us in real life.   But yeah, TLDR having “deep characters” and stories don’t need to be the de facto rule for storytelling. Frodo and Sam were the heart of LOTR in spite of all the deeper characters elsewhere. Hades and Mandy are fun villains, and Sora, Diana of Themyscira, and Superman all work just fine AS THEY TRULY ARE. Heroes or villains, two-dimensional characters can be either simply fun, be the source of interesting stories and plots, or simply still have heart worked into them or have hearts. The best Disney movies are not the ones that are “deep”, it’s the one with heart.

Another Audioverse Nominee! Let's talk about 2022 Tribeca Film Festival selected podcast, Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature from @wlfdr . Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature is a spec-fic, Classical Lit (tbh more like anthro or history to me) podcast presented partly as a University class. We follow Professor (?) as he teaches a possibly questionable class on the literature of a heretofore unknown society, the Anterrans. A society that dates back to 84,000 BCE--massively well before any other known civilization. The ruins of Anterra lie deep in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, or so say the ultra-secretive (and let's be honest, sometimes scientifically dodgy) Chinese scientists who are working the dive site. But with almost no publications online or in the news, how does the professor even *know* about Anterra or its wall-carved literature, let alone have enough info to teach Classics C667?? He appears to possibly have some Chinese contacts, but is this true, or an elaborate hoax from a slightly unlikeable man who wants to make a name for himself, or is maybe slowly going insane? Is this enough to stake his reputation on, enough to risk his position at Harbridge University? He thinks so, and we'll just have to wait and see. Modes is a unique plot in podcasting, so far as I can tell. Which is always fun and refreshing! 9, 15 minute episodes so far, and Season 2 just started up--episodes every two weeks. It should be a quick catch up! So, if you like academia with an air of mystery, spies and secretive governments, and/or unreliable narrators, then Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature is for you!

2. half of the time i'm only halfway here - where or when? (podcast)
If you asked them, Luna would always tell you they never meant to stay late, it was just something that sorta came with the territory of being an uncomfortably busy undergrad moonlighting as the sole campus archival assistant who also happened to be plagued by any number of executive dysfunctions, but the truth was, of course, a little more complicated.

Jonah Heston is the first human resident of the Satellite of Love (technically the third, in the broadest sense of continuity, but first if you count the fact that the original ship crashed and burned in a big ol’ fireball somewhere in middle America after the second experiment ended and now exists purely as a crater a mile wide and a twisted mess of melted scrap metal), but some days, it really doesn’t feel like it.
