"Where are we going?" Scott asks Stiles as the brunette leads him somewhere.
"You'll see." He responded.
"'Cause we really shouldn't be out here. My mom is in a constant state of freak-out from what happened at the school."
"Well, your mom isn't the Sheriff, okay? There's no comparison, trust me."
"Is Y/n not coming with us?"
"No. I didn't want to bother her. So it's just a guy's night."
"Can you at least just tell me what we're doing out here?"
"Yes. When your best friend gets dumped-"
"I didn't get dumped. We're taking a break."
"All right, well, when your best friend gets told by his girlfriend that they're taking a break..." He stops and turns to Scott. "You get your best friend drunk." He holds up a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Pretty soon the bottle clinks on the stone as Stiles sets it down, now half empty. He falls back with a sigh and looks up at the sky. Scott sits on the rock Stiles' head is propped on. "Dude, you know, she's just one... One girl." Stiles' speech is slightly slurred. "You know, outta so many, there's so many other girls in the sea."
"Fish in the sea." Scott corrects. He's as sober as ever, like he hadn't drunk any booze.
"Fish? Why're you talking about fish? I'm talking about girls. I love girls. I love 'em. I love especially ones with strawberry... No. I love ones with h/c hair, e/c eyes, yay tall..." He held his hand in the air in a loose approximation of someone's height.
"Like Y/n?"
"Huh? Why would... Actually yeah, exactly. Hey, how did you know I was talking about... About... What was I talking about?" He giggles. "Hey, you're not happy. Take a drink." He groans a bit as he sits up to grab the bottle.
"I don't want any more."
He falls back again. "You're not drunk?"
"I'm not anything."
"Hey, maybe it's like... Maybe it's like not needing your inhaler anymore, you know? Maybe you can't get drunk as a wolf. Am I drunk?"
"You're wasted. Y/n would probably be scolding you by now."
"Yeah!" He holds his fist up for a bump, but Scott doesn't do it. "Aw, come on, dude, I know it feels bad. I know it hurts. I know. Well, I don't know." He laughs. "But I know this. I know that as much as being broken up hurts, being alone is way worse." Scott furrows his brows at Stiles. "That didn't make any sense." He chuckles. "I need a drink." He sits up for a drink when another hand snatches it up.
"Well, look at the two little bitches getting their drink on." The dark skinned man says, his friend smirking at the teens.
"Give it back." Scott demands.
"What's that little man?"
"I think he wants a drink." The friend says.
"I want the bottle."
"Scott, maybe we should just go." Stiles says a little nervously.
"You brought me here to get me drunk, Stiles. I'm not drunk yet." The man scoffs and takes a swig of the drink. Scott gets up and stands in front of the man. "Give me the bottle." The man shakes his head and Scott glares, his eyes glowing. "Give me the bottle of Jack." His voice is slightly distorted and his claws grow behind his back making Stiles perk up.
"Scott?" He calls in worry. The man hesitantly offers the bottle and Scott snatches it, eyes back to normal, swiftly throwing it and smashing it against a tree. The teens walk away and Stiles stumbles a bit as he catches up to Scott. "Okay, please tell me that was because of the breakup. Or 'cause tomorrow's the full moon." Scott opens the passenger door for Stiles. "Going home now, yeah?" He falls into the seat.
...
"It's just weird. Everybody's talking about what happened the other night, and nobody knows it was us." Allison says as she, Lydia, and Y/n walk through the halls, the school having been reopened that day after the whole fiasco the other night.
"Thank you, for the protection of minors." Lydia sighs with a smile.
"Guys, do you think I made the wrong decision?"
"About that jacket with that dress? Absolutely."
Allison rolls her eyes with a smile. "You know what I mean."
"Hello? Scott locked us in a classroom and left us for dead. He's lucky we're not pressing charges or making him pay our therapy bills."
Y/n rolls her eyes not with a smile. "Lydia, he was trying to protect us. I know Scott, better than both of you, and I know he wouldn't put us in danger on purpose. What he did, although it was frightening, was to keep us safe somehow."
Lydia scoffed. "Sure."
Y/n sighs, but perks up a bit when she sees Stiles coming around the corner, heading for the same class she and Allison had a test in. "Stiles!" She jogs to catch up with him as her friends continue into the room. He looks up at her a little startled just outside the door. "Hey." She smiles at him.
"Hey. What's up?" He smiles back, a touch of nerves in his tone. What he had done with Scott was a bit fuzzy but one of the most clear parts was talking about h/c hair and e/c eyes.
"I never got the chance to thank you for the other day." He gave her a confused frown. "When we were in the Chem lab. You comforted me and I really appreciate it. I normally don't get so scared. I-" She sighs and glances down. "It's just... There was something about that situation that reminded me of when my mom was killed. Being chased and cornered... It just felt like that night all over again."
Stiles was mildly surprised. In all the years he and Scott have known her she almost never talked about when her mom died, only a few bits of what her mom was like. "It's, uh, it's no problem."
"I mean it." She gently grabbed his hand and smiled at him. "Thank you." After a moment of thought she gave him a quick peck on the cheek. When she pulled away to see his eyes as wide as saucers she smirked and winked, turning on her heel and striding into class. Stiles gaped after her even after she had left his line of sight. When he noticed more students going into the room he blinked and seemed to gather himself again before also going into the room. He glanced at Y/n when he sat next to her and he could see the faint smirk still on her face as she focused on her papers.
Scott walks in and hesitates when he sees Allison. He stands in front of her and looks at her. Neither of them say anything. Mr. Harris looks at Scott when he gets to her desk while handing out the tests. "Mr. McCall, please take a seat." Scott moves and sits in front of Stiles. "You have 45 minutes to complete the test. 25% of your grade can be earned right now simply by writing your name on the cover of the blue book." Stiles jumps to writing his name, Y/n doing the same just to get that over with. "However, as happens every year, one of you will inexplicably fail to put your name on the cover, and I'll be left yet again questioning my decision to ever become a teacher. So let's get the disappointment over with. Begin." He presses the button on the timer and sits at his desk, the students start their test.
Y/n works on her test, everything seems to be going smoothly. She can ignore the scratch of pencils, the scrape of erasers, and the clicks of pens as she goes, yet it seems Scott can't as she feels the anxiety grow in him. She furrows her brows and glances at him without lifting her head. "Scott?" She whispers in question. He doesn't seem to hear her and eventualy grabs his bag and runs out of the room.
"Mr. McCall?" Mr. Harris calls after him. Stiles jumps up and follows with Y/n on his tail. "Mr. Stilinski! Ms. L/n!" Neither teen pays him any mind as they get to the hall.
"Scott?" Stiles calls looking one way.
"Stiles." Y/n gets his attention and he sees Scott's bag on the floor. They go over to it and Stiles picks it up.
"Scott?" He calls again, but then pulls out his phone to actually call Scott. They follow the ring to the locker room where they hear the shower running. Stiles takes the lead as they cautiously walk towards the showers, and he breathes a sigh of relief when they find Scott standing under the water without his shirt.
"Scott, are you okay?"
Scott pants as he turns the tap off and faces them. "Guys, I can't..."
"What's happening? Are you changing?" Stiles asks.
"No. No, I can't breathe." Scott wheezes and Stiles quickly fetches his inhaler.
"Here, use this." Scott looks at him in confusion. "Come on, do it."
Scott takes the inhaler and takes a puff, his breathing returning to normal a moment later. "I was having an asthma attack?"
"Not really. You were having a panic attack." Y/n answered.
"But thinking you were having an asthma attack actually stopped the panic attack. Irony~" Stiles added in a singsong.
"How did you know to do that?" Scott asked.
"I used to get them after my mom died. Not fun, huh?"
Scott slightly shook his head. "I looked at her, and it was like someone hit me in the ribs with a hammer."
"Yeah, it's called heartbreak. About 2 billion songs written about it."
"And just as much art and poetry." Y/n added.
"I can't stop thinking about her."
"Well, you could think about this: her dad's a werewolf Hunter, and you're a werewolf, so it was bound to become an issue." Stiles chuckles a bit to lighten the mood, but gets cut short when Y/n lightly jabs him with her elbow.
"That's not helpful." She muttered to him, he relented.
"Dude, I mean, yeah, you got dumped, and it's supposed to suck."
"No, that's not it. It was like I could feel everything in the room, everyone else's emotions."
Welcome to my world. Y/n thought. "It's probably the full moon." She suggests.
"So we'll lock you up in your room later just like we planned. That way the Alpha-"
"Who is not my guardian."
"-can't get to you, either."
"I think we need to do a lot more than lock me in my room." Scott admitted.
"What, you mean because if you get out, you'd be caught by Hunters?"
Scott shakes his head. "No. Because if I get out... I think I might kill someone."
...
Later Y/n stands with Lydia and another girl waiting for Stiles and Scott to watch them practice. Lydia is trying to get her to make more friends and, while it's nice of her, Y/n isn't looking for any more friends than she has unless it happens naturally. Scott and Stiles come out of the locker room with the rest of the team, Stiles having just been put on first line as 'Bilinski' and Scott being named Co-Captain.
"Are you not freaking out? I'm freaking out." Stiles says to Scott.
"What's the point? It's just a stupid title. And I could practically smell the jealousy in there."
"Wait," Stiles stopped them walking, "you smelled jealousy?"
"Yeah, it's like the full moon's turned everything up to ten."
"Huh. Can you pick up on stuff like, I don't know, desire?" He glances at the three girls down the hall.
"What do you mean desire?"
"Like sexual desire?"
"Sexual desire?"
"Yeah, sexual desire. Lust, passion, arrrousal." He rolls the 'r'.
Scott also looks at the girls. "From Y/n?"
"What? No, in general, broad sense, can you determine sexual desire?"
"From Y/n to you?" Scott has a slight smirk.
"Fine, yes, from Y/n to me. Look, it feels like things have been changing and I'm kinda crushing on her so I need to know if I have a chance with this girl, okay?"
While he normally would be happy about this admition, Scott's mood and attitude are being affected by the full moon too much for him to really notice. "Why don't you just ask her?"
"Well, to preserve an amazing friendship and save myself utterly crushing humiliation. Thank you, Scott. Okay? So, please, can you just go up and ask her if she likes me? See if her heartbeat rises, pheromones come out."
Scott rolls his eyes. "Fine." He walks off down the hall.
"Wh- I love you. You're my best friend in the whole world." Stiles calls after him.
"Hey, Y/n? Can we talk for a second?" He asks once he gets to the trio.
"Sure. I'll see you later, Lydie." Y/n waves to her friend and the other girl as they walk off. He leads them to Coach's office and shuts the door. "What's up?"
"Just I needed to ask you something. Do you, uh... Do you know if Allison still likes me?"
"Of course she does."
"Really?"
"Yes. I mean, obviously once you care for someone you always will in a way." She amends. "Allison is just confused and upset. It's understandable from her point of view if you think about it. She was trapped in a school with a killer on the loose, her boyfriend throws himself into the fray and suddenly he locks her in a room. It's scary when you know everything, it's terrifying when you hardly know anything. I know you did it to keep us safe and I'm very grateful for that." She gives him a smile, but it falls slightly when she feels the tension in the room shift.
"How grateful?" He looks at her intensely.
"I don't know what you mean by that." She said cautiously.
"I mean, how grateful are you?"
"As grateful as any friend wou-" She's cut off and her eyes widen as Scott suddenly kisses her. After a moment of shock she pushes him away and she stares at him angrily. "What the hell?! God, Scott, that was my- ugh!" She wiped at her mouth and shoved past him, storming out of the office. It's just because of the full moon. That's it, that's the only reason why he did that. Just the moon. She understood, but that didn't mean she was any less upset.
Scott walked to the lacrosse field and Stiles perked up when he sat next to him. "Hey. What happened?"
"What?"
"What do you mean, what? Did you ask her? Did she say anything? Did she say she liked me? Did she imply she liked me?"
"Yeah. Yeah, she likes you. In fact, she's totally into you." Stiles becomes too excited to notice Scott's strange behavior or Y/n's absence until they actually get on the field to practice.
"Scott, you okay, dude?" He doesn't answer. "Look, I know we just got good news and all, but there's still seven hours till the full moon, okay?" He can't say any more because it's Scott's turn to run the ball. He goes forward, but two players team up to knock him on his back.
"Guess some people don't appreciate your new status there, McCall." Coach laughs. "Who's next?" He blows his whistle. "Let's go." Scott flips back onto his feet and Coach focuses on Stiles who was hesitating. "You have a problem with that, Bilinski?"
"What? Yeah, no." Stiles nods.
"All right, you're up, big boy. Let's go!" Stiles gears up, but then Scott pushes him back with his stick. "That's it, McCall! That's the spirit! You earn it! Earn it, McCall!" Scott gets the ball again. He rushes forward, flips the two players and smacks Danny in the face to score the ball. Everyone rushes to the dazed goalie to check on him.
Stiles goes over to Scott on the side. "Dude, what the hell are you doin'?"
"He's twice the size of me." Scott defends.
"Yeah, but everybody likes Danny. Now everybody's gonna hate you."
"I don't care." Scott walks off and Stiles looks around for Y/n. She should have been there by now. He spots her far away on the sidelines looking upset and he goes to her.
"Hey, where were you?" He asked.
"Do you think you can take care of Scott by yourself tonight?" She suddenly asks.
He looks at her confused. "I, mean, yeah? Are you okay? What happened?"
"It's just... Earlier Scott wanted to talk to me and he asked if Allison still liked him. I told him she was just upset. And then all of a sudden he just kissed me."
"He kissed you?" He asked in shock, a bit hurt at Scott's actions.
"Yeah." She frowned. "I mean, I get that it's just the full moon and he'll be better by tomorrow, but I'm just... I'm very uncomfortable around him right now."
"Yeah. Yeah, no, I'll be fine tonight."
She gave him a small smile. "Thanks."
"I'll, uh... I'll talk to you later."
"Yeah." She hugged him and he was quick to hug back before he let her go. He watched her leave with a frown.
...
Stiles walks into the McCall house that night with a duffle bag. "Scott?" Melissa calls when she hears the door close, but when she comes around she finds her son's friend.
"Stiles." He smiles at her.
"Key!" She notices the object in his hand.
"Yeah. I had one made, so..."
"That doesn't surprise me. It scares me, but it doesn't surprise me." He lets the bag drop and it makes a loud metallic 'clunk'. "What is that?"
"Uh, school project."
"Mmm. Stiles, he's okay, right?"
"Who? Scott? Yeah. Totally."
"He just doesn't talk to me that much anymore, not like he used to."
"Well, he's had a bit of a rough week."
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. Yeah, um... Okay, uh... Be careful tonight."
"You, too."
"Full moon."
"What?" He blurts, shocked.
"There's a full moon tonight." She laughs. "You should see how the E.R. gets. Brings out all the nut jobs."
"Oh." He chuckles. "Yeah. Right."
"You know, it's, um, actually where they came up with the word 'lunatic'." And Mrs. McCall leaves for her job on that interesting note.
Stiles goes up to Scott's dark room and sits the bag down, turning on the light. "Oh, my God!" He exclaims once he sees Scott sitting in his chair in the dark. "Dude. You scared the hell out of me. Your mom said you weren't home yet." He moved the bag closer to show Scott what he got.
"I came in through the window."
"Okay. Uh, well, let's get this set up. I want you to see what I bought." He starts rummaging through the bag.
"I'm fine." He sounds anything but 'fine'. "I'm just gonna lock the door and go to bed early tonight."
"You sure about that? 'Cause you've got this kind of serial killer look going on in your eyes, and I'm hoping it's the full moon taking effect, 'cause it's really starting to freak me out."
"I'm fine. You should go now."
"All right, I'll leave. Well, look, would you just at least look in the bag and see what I bought? You know, maybe you use it, maybe you don't. Sound good?"
Scott slowly gets up from the chair and crouches down in front of Stiles and the bag. He reaches in and grabs a fistful of chains, holding them up. "You think I'm gonna let you put these on and chain me up like a dog?" He lets the chains fall.
"Actually, no." In one swift motion Stiles grabs Scott's wrist and the handcuffs he had in his pocket and cuffed him to the radiator. Stiles quickly backs away as Scott grunts angrily.
"What the hell are you doing?" He pulls on the cuffs, yet they don't budge.
"Protecting you from yourself... And giving you some payback... For kissing Y/n."
...
After a bit of leaving Scott by himself Stiles comes back with a bottle of water. "I brought you some water." He holds up a doggie bowl with Scott's name on the side and pours the water in it. He tosses the bottle aside and sets the bowl where Scott can reach it. He turns to sit outside the room and Scott throws the bowl, making water go everywhere.
"I'm gonna kill you!"
Stiles rounds on Scott angrily. "You kissed her, Scott, okay? You kissed Y/n. After I told you that I was liking her and that maybe I was liking her more than I- and, you know, the past three hours, I've been thinking, it's probably just the full moon, you know, he doesn't even know what he's doing, and tomorrow, he'll be totally back to normal. He probably won't even remember what a complete dumbass he's been. A son of a bitch, a freaking unbelievable piece of crap friend."
"She kissed me."
"What?"
"I said, she kissed me." Stiles scoffs and leaves the room, leaning against the wall out of sight. "She would have done a lot more, too." Stiles slides down the wall and closes his eyes to block out Scott's words. "You should have seen the way she had her hands all over me." He heard it from her, she wouldn't lie and even if she didn't tell him, he knows she isn't like that. "She would have done anything I wanted." He's just trying to provoke him. "Anything!"
It doesn't stop it hurting when he imagines it though.
...
Y/n stands outside of the Hale house, looking up at the scarred building with an apprehensive gaze. She closes her eyes as the screams start up again, trying to ignore them. It should be a bit easier by now, but for some reason this house is hard to ignore. She racks her brain for something to focus on and she remembers the first time she was there, what she listened to to block them out. Stiles' voice. With that she remembered his laugh and his rants he gets into when he's excited.
With a smile she opens her eyes, relaxed and no longer hearing the house's pain. Now to do what she came here for. "Derek?" She calls. "I know you're here. I need your help."
After a moment the Hale steps out of the dark house and looks down at her. "What?"
"Scott. He's gonna need help tonight. He's stressed and scared and he doesn't have a hold of his shifting yet. I need you to keep him from doing something stupid."
"Why should I? Thanks to him I'm a wanted criminal."
"He panicked and you were the easiest explanation. And besides, you're brothers, aren't you? You said it yourself."
"Why can't you help him? Use some charm or spell or something."
"There's only so much I can do to help, but another wolf would help more."
He's quiet for a moment. "Fine."
She gives him a nod. "Thank you." Derek leaves and she starts to walk away, but she pauses and looks in a certain direction. Scott's house. Something is pulling her, like a faint tug on her heart leading her that way. So she follows.
...
Scott tugs at the cuffs until his wrist starts to bleed, but it still holds strong. "Stiles, please let me out. It's the full moon, I swear. You know I wouldn't do any of this on purpose." Scott tries only for Stiles to ignore him. "Please, Stiles, let me out. It's starting to hurt."
Stiles' arm twitches like he wants to get up and help, but a hand stops him. "Don't." A voice whispers. He looks up to see Y/n next to him. He hadn't even noticed her come into the house, he's thankful she's there all the same. "Don't let him out." She leans her head on his, something for him to focus on to ignore Scott's plea's.
"It's not like the first time." He continues. "It's the full moon. It's Allison... Breaking up with me. I know... That it's not just taking a break. She broke up with me. And it's killing me. I feel completely hopeless. Just, please, let me out."
"I can't." Stiles says.
The moon comes out from behind the clouds and as the light shines on him Scott panics and screams as he shifts. Y/n puts her hands over Stiles' from their place on his head, keeping her head on his, and gently squeezes. I'm here. She says. You're not alone. Scott screams and pulls at the cuffs endlessly. Until suddenly it does end. It's quiet. Y/n pulls away from Stiles as they look at the closed door. "Scott, are you okay?" He asks. There's no answer. "Scott?" They get up and Stiles opens the door, but Scott's not there. Only bloody cuffs and an open window.
Stiles runs out of the house. "Stiles!" She calls after him and follows. He drives down the road, tapping the wheel anxiously. She doesn't say anything, knowing whatever she says won't ease his nerves right now. They end up coming across police cars and an amubulance. Stiles pulls over and jumps out asking for his dad. When the Sheriff shows up Stiles immediatly hugs him and Y/n watches from the Jeep. She smiles at them, but it drops when she glances at the moon. The night's still young and she hopes Derek finds Scott before he does something he'll regret.

Voucher expansion leads to more students, waitlists and classes for some religious schools | AP News
The Miami Archdiocese’s superintendent of schools says Catholic education is increasingly in demand in South Florida, now that all K-12 students regardless of income are allowed to use taxpayer-funded programs to pay for private school tuition.
Against the backdrop of favorable decisions by the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court, Florida was among nine states that expanded school voucher programs last year. So many families have signed up for the taxpayer-funded tuition reimbursements, some states are already exceeding their budgets.
Some long-running religious schools are now planning for a fuller future after the wave of policy wins for the so-called school choice movement. Others hope voucher expansion comes to their state.
“We are moving into growth mode,” said Jim Rigg, superintendent of the Miami Archdiocese’s 64 schools. Accelerated by the state’s private school scholarship program, enrollment has risen for the last four years, reaching its highest peak in over a decade, he said.
“We are actively discussing new schools, either opened or reopened, over the next several years.”

For Teachers' Unions, Strikes Are the New Normal
Tumblr media
Does anyone remember the “Red For Ed” education workers’ strikes of 2018-19 across the United States? The #RedForEd movement began in February 2018 in West Virginia and inspired similar statewide school employee strikes in Oklahoma, Arizona, and Colorado. Smaller strikes were set off in individual districts in Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina, and a strike by faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
The strikes continued into 2019, with United Teachers Los Angeles and teachers walking out in Virginia, Denver, Oakland, and Chicago.
The strikes averaged about two weeks and led to varying levels of success by the respective state and local governments.
This brief history lesson is important, because the #RedForEd movement laid the groundwork in 2018 for what would be the longest-lasting and most disastrous nationwide teacher union strike this country has ever seen.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the rest of the world, the first known case of COVID-19 was reported in China in December 2019, quickly spreading worldwide in January 2020.
By Feb. 11, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was calling for (translation: dictating) federal guidelines on how schools should handle the virus.
In mid-February, individual schools began closing down “for a few days” to clean the buildings and figure out how to reopen. These school closures were led by New York City – America’s largest school district – and districts in Washington state.
Between mid-February and mid-March, individual school districts began shutting down across the country, but it was Ohio, of all places, that declared the first statewide school closure on March 12.
The dominos began to fall, and by March 16, 27 states and territories had issued orders or recommendations for closing schools to in-person education.
According to Education Week, by March 25, all U.S. public school buildings were forcibly closed.
We all remember what happened after that. Eventually, only Wyoming and Montana reopened their public schools before the end of the 2019-20 school year.
During the summer, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth by AFT President Randi Weingarten and other prominent teachers’ union leaders over parents’ desperate pleas to get their kids back into the classroom.
Weingarten went so far as to call attempts to reopen classrooms in the fall of 2020 “reckless,” “callous,” and “cruel.”
United Teachers Los Angeles president Cecily Myart-Cruz called California’s reopening plan a “recipe for structural racism.”
Remember, this is the same woman who said, “It’s OK that our babies may not have learned all their times tables … They know the words ‘insurrection’ and ‘coup.’”
Myart-Cruz even accidentally said the quiet part out loud when she admitted, “Education is political. People don’t want to say that, but it is.”
The country remembers all too well what happened during the 2020-2021 academic year: Students in red states, where teachers’ unions don’t typically rule the roost, were able to get back into the classroom at some point during the fall semester and resume (or try to catch up on) their studies.
Meanwhile, students trapped in blue states – or blue cities – effectively run by teachers’ union political power, remained hostages to the demands of even more funding, hazard pay, increased “teacher work periods,” etc. In many cases, the demands even included political concessions like guaranteed housing and expanding Medicare for All.
Don’t forget: Some teachers’ unions had to issue reminders for teachers not to post vacation pictures while the schools were closed.
Because let’s call a spade a spade: The teachers’ unions used the COVID pandemic as history’s largest and longest strike, during which they tried to exact concessions they would have never achieved at a normal negotiating table.
And the #RedForEd campaign set the stage.
After months of forcing children to spend solitary hours a day in front of a screen, parents and politicians were ready to throw huge sums of money at the education system to appease the union bosses holding the keys to the school doors.
Slowly, blue districts began opening during the 2020-21 school year, but many waited until the second semester, keeping students out of school effectively for an entire year or longer.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) held yet another strike just as classes were about to begin in January 2022, keeping students out for another week until further demands were met.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot begged the union to call off the strike repeatedly during the pandemic, to no avail. And now, she has been replaced by Brandon Johnson, himself a former CTU organizer, who helped set off the 2012 strike.
Unsurprisingly, these school closures have finally begun to show their disastrous results, as the June 2023 release of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) revealed the average 13-year-old essentially lost 30 years of mathematical understanding, with scores plummeting to levels not seen since the 1990s.
Further, reading levels dropped four points between 2020 and 2023.
And yet, unfazed by these numbers, teachers’ union strikes continue to this day.
In November 2023, the Portland Association of Teachers in Oregon went on strike for three weeks.
Schools in Newton, Mass., reopened on Feb. 5, 2024, for the first time in more than two weeks after a teachers’ union strike that set off a bitter feud with community parents. The union actually organized a pub crawl during negotiations.
And the St. Paul (Minn.) Federation of Teachers (SPFE) has authorized a strike for Feb. 15.
When they tell you, “It’s for the children,” don’t believe them. The unions are using children for political and emotional blackmail.
Randi Weingarten’s predecessor at the American Federation of Teachers, Albert Shanker, is famously said to have quipped, “When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”
It’s time for parents and lawmakers to tell teachers’ unions what they are not accustomed to hearing: “No.”
These teachers’ union strikes are illegal, and they must not be tolerated when they are illegally called.

FBI takes down BlackCat Ransomware gang and releases free decryption tool
Tumblr media
The Justice Department has announced a disruption campaign against the Blackcat ransomware group — also known as ALPHV or Noberus — that has targeted the computer networks of more than 1,000 victims and caused harm around the world since its inception, including networks that support U.S. critical infrastructure. Over the past 18 months, ALPHV/Blackcat has emerged as the second most prolific ransomware-as-a-service variant in the world based on the hundreds of millions of dollars in ransoms paid by victims around the world.  Due to the global scale of these crimes, multiple foreign law enforcement agencies are conducting parallel investigations.  The FBI developed a decryption tool that allowed FBI field offices across the country and law enforcement partners around the world to offer over 500 affected victims the capability to restore their systems. To date, the FBI has worked with dozens of victims in the United States and internationally to implement this solution, saving multiple victims from ransom demands totaling approximately $68 million.  As detailed in a search warrant unsealed today in the Southern District of Florida, the FBI has also gained visibility into the Blackcat ransomware group’s computer network as part of the investigation and has seized several websites that the group operated. “In disrupting the BlackCat ransomware group, the Justice Department has once again hacked the hackers,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco. “With a decryption tool provided by the FBI to hundreds of ransomware victims worldwide, businesses and schools were able to reopen, and health care and emergency services were able to come back online. We will continue to prioritize disruptions and place victims at the center of our strategy to dismantle the ecosystem fueling cybercrime.” “The FBI continues to be unrelenting in bringing cybercriminals to justice and determined in its efforts to defeat and disrupt ransomware campaigns targeting critical infrastructure, the private sector, and beyond,” said FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate. “Helping victims of crime is the FBI’s highest priority and is reflected here in the provision of tools to assist those victimized in decrypting compromised networks and systems. The FBI will continue to aggressively pursue these criminal actors wherever they attempt to hide and ensure they are brought to justice and held accountable under the law.” “At the Justice Department, we prioritize victim safety and security,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “In this case, agents and prosecutors worked tirelessly to restore victim networks, but these actions are not the culmination of our efforts, they are just the beginning. Criminal actors should be aware that the announcement today is just one part of this ongoing effort. Going forward, we will continue our investigation and pursue those behind Blackcat until they are brought to justice.” “Today’s announcement highlights the Justice Department’s ability to take on even the most sophisticated and prolific cybercriminals,” said U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida. “As a result of our office’s tireless efforts, alongside FBI Miami, U.S. Secret Service, and our foreign law enforcement partners, we have provided Blackcat’s victims, in the Southern District of Florida and around the world, the opportunity to get back on their feet and to fortify their digital defenses. We will continue to focus on holding the people behind the Blackcat ransomware group accountable for their crimes.” According to the unsealed warrant, Blackcat actors have compromised computer networks in the United States and worldwide. The disruptions caused by the ransomware variant have affected U.S. critical infrastructure – including government facilities, emergency services, defense industrial base companies, critical manufacturing, and healthcare and public health facilities – as well as other corporations, government entities, and schools. The loss amount globally is in the hundreds of millions and includes ransom payments, destruction and theft of proprietary data, and costs associated with incident response. Blackcat uses a ransomware-as-a-service model in which developers are responsible for creating and updating ransomware and for maintaining the illicit internet infrastructure. Affiliates are responsible for identifying and attacking high-value victim institutions with the ransomware. After a victim pays, developers and affiliates share the ransom. Blackcat actors employ a multiple extortion model of attack. Before encrypting the victim system, the affiliate will exfiltrate or steal sensitive data. The affiliate then seeks a ransom in exchange for decrypting the victim’s system and not publishing the stolen data. Blackcat actors attempt to target the most sensitive data in a victim’s system to increase the pressure to pay. Blackcat actors rely on a leak site available on the dark web to publicize their attacks. When a victim refuses to pay a ransom, these actors commonly retaliate by publishing stolen data to a leak website where it becomes publicly available. Read the full article

JSS Intern Teachers To Strike In January if TSC Renews or Extend Contracts
Tumblr media
JSS Intern Teachers To Strike In January if TSC Renews or Extend Contracts Kericho Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers are threatening to go on strike and withdraw their services once schools reopen for the first term if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) fails to hire them on permanent and pensionable terms. The JSS teachers gave TSC a three-week notice that they do not want their contracts as interns renewed in January of next year. "They are going to renew the contracts," said Mary Rotich, executive of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kericho branch. We will not accept anything less than confirmation, and we request that TSC not extend the contracts of these teachers…we request that TSC confirm all JSS interns who worked in January 2023." ALSO READ: Teaching Jobs Near Me: 2024 BOM, Primary, JSS, Secondary Teaching Opportunities Intern teachers have also criticized the monthly payment of Ksh.19,000, claiming that it falls short of the minimum wage and does not meet their demands. JSS teacher Allan Kirui likened TSC's treatment to the 'Shakahola slaughter,' stating that if their demands are not granted, they will feel compelled to resign. "Let me tell the entire country that the junior secondary school experience is comparable to the Shakahola massacre; some teachers have worked for 10 months without being confirmed." "We've told TSC to move quickly and confirm 21,000 teachers," Kirui stated. This comes as KNUT warned JSS teachers against demonstrating over the same saying that the issue will be adressed in a proper manner. ALSO READ: TSC-Hired JSS Teachers Warn of Strike, Demand Confirmation of Permanent, Pensionable Status "And I warned them (interns), go to the streets and you shall no longer be an intern. What will you do?" Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General, said. Oyuu stated that there are people instigating intern Junior Secondary School teachers on a one-year contract to organize protests. JSS intern teachers have been protesting and organizing peaceful demonstrations for better contract terms for the past week. Wow this article found a way to claim Newsome and Trump both made “misleading” statements.
Wow this article found a way to claim Newsome and Trump both made “misleading” statements. They spend a lot of time calling DeSantis’s words “half lies” and spend very little time on Newsome but if you read in-between the lines, this article uses less harsh language to call out Newsome on a lot of lies.
A “small group of parents” are worried about the age appropriateness of sexual related material? That is a hard sell! I have a lot of trouble believing it’s a minority, “fringe”, group of parents worried about content their kids are exposed too.
I’ll never comprehend how charging everyone LESS taxes, places more of a burden on the middle and lower class citizens. Of course Politifact’s “source” for this claim is from a radical left, progressive “Institute”. How does having a 0% statewide income rate mean a 12.7% income tax on lower class citizens?
In regards to crime we have an entire section where PolitiFact completely disregards California and spends paragraphs criticizing the way Florida reports their crime. In the violent crime portion Politifact goes out of their way to quote another radical left leaning “source” that claims Florida has a higher gun related murders then California. They mention nothing of smash and grabs, rape, the knock out game or DeSantis’s Claim about products behind glass in stores.
Of course California can’t put any limitations on abortion because they don’t value human life, which is apparent in the way they handle crime and homelessness. A very very misleading talking point from the left is that women would be “criminalized” for not following abortion laws. This is 100% inaccurate; all proposed pro-life bills would hold doctors accountable for the procedure. The Florida law also makes several exceptions INCLUDING the mother’s life.
Direct Quotes:
California’s population declined for the first time ever in 2020, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. It’s been declining since then. (Newsom became governor in 2019). After the 2020 Census, California lost a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in its history.
In January 2022, U-Haul said that it ran out of one-way trucks and trailers in California at the start of 2021. This was a result of the large demand of people moving out of California in 2020, leaving fewer trucks, a U-Haul spokesperson told The Sacramento Bee.
A 2023 poll by the Public Policy Institute of California found that 45% of Californians who considered moving to another state cited housing costs as a factor.
Newsom borrowed a page from former President Donald Trump’s playbook by misleadingly portraying DeSantis as a lockdown leader. Newsom’s comments focused on DeSantis’ actions in the pandemic’s first few weeks, when nearly all governors operated in lockstep. Newsom omits that DeSantis reopen earlier than most governors in the spring of 2020.
Many local governments closed beaches for a limited time, but DeSantis did not close them statewide.
Newsom was on firmer ground in his claim about closing bars. DeSantis ordered all bars and nightclubs closed for 30 days. Restaurants did not close. His March 17 order said restaurants were limited to 50% customer capacity and had to separate seating by 6 feet.
This stems from one group’s count and does not represent 1,406 books banned statewide.
A September Florida Department of Education report shows 20 of Florida’s 67 school districts and the statewide public Florida Virtual School removed 298 books in the 2022-23 school year. Some of those books were banned in multiple districts. Overall, school district officials received 1,218 objections about books.
Newsom also said, "What’s wrong with Amanda Gorman’s poetry?" suggesting it was banned. A parent at a South Florida school challenged Gorman’s poem "The Hill We Climb," which Gorman performed at Biden’s January 2021 inauguration. After a review, the K-through-eighth grade school moved the book to the library’s middle school section. It was not banned at the school, much less by the district or the state. Many of the objections were for books containing sexual or LGBTQ+ content and came from a small group of parents, some affiliated with conservative groups, such as Moms for Liberty, a Tampa Bay Times analysis found.
Among the 50 states, Florida has the nation’s 11th-lowest overall tax burden, while California has the fifth-highest, according to annual rankings by the Tax Foundation, a think tank that advocates for lower taxes.
Comparing the tax burden for the lowest 20% of households in income, California also has lower taxes. In California, households in the bottom 20% paid 10.5% of their income in taxes, compared with Florida’s 12.7%.
Meanwhile, wealthy taxpayers came out ahead in Florida, where the tax burden for the top 1% was 2.3% of income. That’s far lower than the 12.4% rate for California millionaires.
DeSantis signed legislation in 2022 that outlawed abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. It does not make exceptions for cases of incest, rape or human trafficking but includes an exception for the mother’s life.
The law penalizes physicians, but whether it also criminalizes women is less clear, so we have rated a similar claim Half True. The law says that anyone who "actively participates in" an abortion commits a third-degree felony, which opens the door to prosecutors charging women, but we don’t yet know whether they will or how courts would respond to such charges. DeSantis has also said that he doesn’t want women prosecuted, only doctors.
This is accurate. Florida ranked third among states for fourth grade reading, after Massachusetts and Wyoming. California ranked 32nd.
DeSantis criticized California for having "one of the lowest literacy rates in the country." He is correct — but he ignored that Florida’s literacy rate is nearly as low.
Hannity said California’s levels of violent crime are "way higher than the national average." He showed a graphic with 2022 violent crime rates, based on FBI data. California had the highest rate, with 499.5 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The national average was 380.7 per 100,000, and Florida’s was 258.9 per 100,000. We checked the numbers in the graphic and found they were accurate.
Newsom is right, based on the voting patterns in the 2020 presidential election and 2020 state-by-state homicide rankings, according to an analysis of federal data by Third Way, a center-left policy group.
The map plotted public reports of human feces found in San Francisco from 2011 to 2019. (More than 118,000 people reported their findings to San Francisco’s nonemergency line.)
Newsom was San Francisco mayor from 2004 to 2011 and was California’s lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2019.

University reopens LGBTQ+ resource center after students fought back
Southeast Missouri State University administrators have announced the school will reopen an LGBTQ+ resource center after students across campus demanded it. The center was closed without warning due to lack of staffing and low student usage, according to the administration. Related: The joyful chaos of coming out as queer, nonbinary & bisexual in my late 20s  It hasn’t been easy to navigate this new world as an adult, but I’m still happy I took my time. “There wasn’t really much communication on the university’s behalf, so we were kind of like what is going on, why is this happening,” Peyton Redinger, the head of the school’s Pride group, told the local CBS station. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you: Subscribe to our Newsletter “So me and my executive board set up a petition for students to voice their opinions on it and voice what they were feeling on this and how this will impact their lives.” And students responded in force, noting that with queer rights under attack nationwide, the resource center was needed more than ever. “LGBTQ students need a place to go for resources for support,” freshman Kaedan Thomas told the station. “I feel like it is going to impact students mentally,” added Laci Tallo. In a statement, the university noted that the outpouring of support demonstrated how much LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty were valued by the school community. The center will reopen and be staffed with student employees and volunteers. “It is refreshing to know that the university is listening, that they are willing to do the things it takes to make their students feel safe on campus even if it is a minority group,” Redinger said after the announcement. http://dlvr.it/Swc3L5

BBOG tasks Buhari to rescue remaining 96 Chibok girls
Tumblr media
As today marks the ninth anniversary of the abduction of 276 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, a coalition, the #BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the 96 girls still missing are rescued before he leaves office on May 29, this year. This is also as the group frowned at the non-release of 16 rescued girls to their families many months after, this it noted, is akin to escaping from one form of captivity and being held captive at another end. This was contained in a statement released by a member of the coalition, who is also the Founder of Enough is Enough, EIE, Yemi Adamolekun, in Lagos yesterday. The group charged the President to remember what he said on the day of his inauguration on May 29, 2015 where he said, “We can not claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents,” and do the needful before leaving office.“As we approach the tragic ninth anniversary of the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State – April 14, 2014 – our hearts remain broken at the failure to close this shameful chapter in our country’s history as promised by President Muhammadu Buhari in his address to the nation in 2015 and various times subsequently.“The last report we received on the status of the Chibok Girls in October 2022 is as follows:276 abducted, 57 escaped, 107 released, 16 rescued (by the Military) and 96 still missing.“We are equally distressed to learn that after a successful campaign by our gallant military in the last two years when they liberated thousands of people including over 12 girls – now women – and handed them over to the Borno State Government, our daughters and sisters remain in the custody of the state and have not been properly reunited with their families or back in control of their lives now that they are out of the hands of the terrorists. “Have our girls escaped one form of captivity only to spend 6 months to one and a half years in a different form of captivity? What crime have they committed? Why are survivors of unimaginable trauma being treated this way?“We appeal and demand that the President fulfils his promise to his daughters from Chibok, to Leah Sharibu, his daughter from Dapchi and other victims of insurgency, bandits and kidnappers and rescue them before his term of office ends on May 29, 2023. The rescue and rehabilitation of our daughters whose education was interrupted and the restoration of peace in their communities will be an undeniable legacy of President Buhari’s administration.“Our demands on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the ugly incident are: Bring back our girls before May 29, 2023. A push to finally defeat Boko Haram, ISWAP, and liberate all our citizens. Accountability from the Borno State Government. A full report and debriefing for the parents on the status, academic plans and wishes of the rescued girls, women and children in their custody.“Provide closure for parents on the fate of their daughters who they have reason to believe are dead. Psycho-social support for Chibok and other conflict-affected families of abducted students to address the trauma to families; equipping and completion of their education, shelter, and empowerment to earn a living.“Equip and motivate the police and armed forces and see to their welfare and proper care for the families of officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Reinvest in the Victims Support Fund (VSF) to care for the practical needs of all returned and rescued girls, siblings and family members of girls. The federal government has seemingly abandoned VSF to the management of one generous citizen.“Public statement on the Missing Persons Register and immediate reopening of a properly resourced and staffed Missing Persons Desk at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Report on the coordinated provision of security for schools – primary, secondary, and higher education at local, state and federal levels. Status report on the Safe Schools Initiative and adequate financing to ensure its effectiveness.” Read the full article

The job market is cooling however staff nonetheless have energy say economists
Hinterhaus Productions | Getty Pictures There are indicators the new job market is cooling — however staff nonetheless have bargaining energy for now, in response to labor economists. Job openings, a barometer of employers’ demand for staff, noticed a near-record month-to-month decline in August. Openings fell by 1.1 million to 10.1 million, in response to U.S. Division of Labor information issued Tuesday — a month-to-month lower eclipsed solely by April 2020, within the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, after they fell by roughly 1.2 million. The Federal Reserve is elevating borrowing prices for customers and companies to pump the brakes on the U.S. financial system and cut back inflation. Central financial institution officers hope {that a} cooling labor market will translate to decrease wage development, which has been working at its highest tempo in many years and contributes to inflation. Extra from Private Finance: CNBC ranks the top-rated monetary advisory companies of 2022 That is the very best time to use for school monetary support Dad and mom who missed out on $3,600 little one tax credit score have till Nov. 15 to assert it Job openings began to surge in early 2021 as Covid-19 vaccines rolled out and the financial system started to reopen extra broadly. Staff had been capable of stop for different alternatives amid ample job postings and as employers competed for expertise by elevating pay. That job-hopping development got here to be referred to as the Nice Resignation. “I believe that is precisely what the Fed desires to see,” Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, stated of the discount in job openings. “The stress resulting in this cutthroat sport of musical chairs [among workers], they need that eased. “And there are lastly indicators that is occurring.” There have been 1.7 job openings per unemployed employee in August, down from almost two openings per unemployed in July. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has cited this ratio as one which officers wish to see fall as an indicator of labor market cooling. Why the job market ‘nonetheless leans towards staff’ That stated, job openings are nonetheless excessive by historic requirements, that means staff have ample alternatives, labor economists stated. Openings hovered round 7 million earlier than the pandemic; they peaked close to 11.9 million in March 2022. “I might say the job market nonetheless leans towards staff,” stated Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor. “However as a result of issues are cooling off, we will not assure that can proceed transferring ahead.” The extent of voluntary quitting amongst staff ticked up by 100,000 folks from July to August, to virtually 4.2 million, in response to the Labor Division’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Quits are a gauge of employee confidence and sentiment, so the slight enhance and traditionally excessive degree recommend staff stay within the driver’s seat, Pollak stated. Most staff who depart their present jobs accomplish that for employment elsewhere, economists stated. They sometimes get an even bigger pay bump than those that keep of their present roles: a 7% annual increase for job switchers in August versus 5% for job stayers, in response to the Federal Reserve Financial institution of Atlanta. In the meantime, layoffs stay low and have elevated solely modestly as employers attempt to dangle onto the employees they’ve, economists stated. Despite the fact that staff nonetheless appear to have the higher hand, they might wish to proceed extra cautiously going ahead relative to quitting and switching jobs as a result of prospect of an additional moderation within the labor market, Zhao stated. “Final 12 months, the job market was robust sufficient that it was simpler for people to stop with out having one thing else lined up,” Zhao stated. “I believe the scenario now’s a lot softer. Anybody on the lookout for a brand new job has to judge issues on a company-by-company foundation.” Originally published at Sacramento News Journal

Good Evening, millions of Indian and many country children surfed learning loss as wave after wave Covid-19 forced one of the longest school closers in the world upon us .Now ,within weeks of schools reopening the uptick in Covid cases in some states ,including reports of a few cases in school kids ,has reignited demands from a section of parents to revert to hybrid mode of learning again .The alarm is understandable but is it justified? As we all want to ensure continuity of learning in the future, there is a need for more structured engagement of all stakeholders. Schools should inform education authorities in the block or ward about any case to help them track the situation. Parents -especially of the child sharing the bench with positive case -should be told to watch out for symptoms but even this child can countinu to attend school .If any child has a cough and cold ,her or she should at home for 2-3 days or till recovery. Governments need to proactively work on public and parental awareness. In a possible scenario of a major spike in cases ,any decision on partial closure of sections of schools needs to be based upon pre-defined objective criteria and on a case -to -case basis.Leaving this decisions to schools means that pressure from influential parents might force a shift to hybrid mode .........continue (at Mumbai - मुंबई) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccx8X3lvxnu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Back to work irl today 🙃 I don't even have a consistent space to set up because we're sharing a campus with another school (HVAC fire on our campus and we're not allowed back in yet) and I've been assigned to share a room with a counselor, meaning one of us has to leave if there's an appointment because of confidentiality and it's going to most likely be me (even tho she's willing to work outside and be as flexible as I am)
My anxiety is having a field day with this. Not only am I breaking routine and driving somewhere new (ish), I'm not even guaranteed a dedicated space to work! Also, because it's two schools combined into one rn it's going to be loud and I'm probably going to get distracted! But guess what I have at home?! A dedicated work space!!! And quiet!!!! Also a private bathroom!!!!!! AND I'M NOT PACKED IN WITH STRANGERS LIKE A SARDINE AT THE TAIL END OF A PANORAMA
I'm not the only one who feels this way, but admin is set on the decision so here we are
