[On a second rewatch I think its interesting how Kenji specifically says "I can't fall here. Not we. Theres some foreshadowing that he is the only real one here. He specifics in his rap vers that its "that wretched party" that belongs in a grave, not any of our characters in particular]

[also another detail. The necromancy + skull imagery to their rap verse…. they are bringing back old ghosts with their song… they are so tragic. The rap on as second watch is just so much more tragic once you know everything]

Kuko's rap uses the letters T B H as the starts of his verses which is fun

NIce imagery of three dragons fighting for dominance, a very apt metaphor for IchiSamaKuko who are just hothead extremes

oh thats a neat explanation of how they were able to do a lot of supernatural stuff. I feel like it would have been more interesting if it was a hallucination, but hey I'll take that L its not that bad even if a bit uninspired/not very well foreshadowed

Also the vibrations as controlling element, as someone who can hear electronics, is something that would work for me 100% wwwww I would go crazy if i had to hear those annoying sound waves 24/7

I mean exposition episode but its kinda cute actually? I hate that they're doing this after revealing that they're dead but it does put in the point that they were people, not good people, but still people

I mean its not that bad of a motive, im not that convinced that they're in the wrong. I'm also very much a sucker for acts of destructive love which is why i may be more inclined to cheer for kaibyakumon

While I do wish that they had fleshed out Kenji's relationship with Satoru and Akira a bit more, I do feel like the duo's dynamic on its own was really well presented before the big reveal. Like what's Kenji's feelings about SatoAkira, why is he so invested in this whole plan other than borderline idolizing kaibyaku?

I feel its hilarious how kenji's just sitting there while kaibyaku is just going on his monologue wwww

Nice, i like how they used Oosaka's island nature into their planning but there Are other bridges going into the mainland im pretty sure?

okay but why should you care? Like hes doing a overall good? Kaibyakumon's goals are aligned with the overall cast's motive of making sure that the government is placed in check so if the team wants us to have a reason to root against them, gotta give a good reason, esp after that backstory

Regarding rep, I agree, but I still love it. I think it has some of Taylor's best world-creating. As requested, Sarah, here are my examples of good lines immediately followed by lines I don't like:

"My baby's fit like a daydream" - romantic and genius move dropping all the little london boy hints (when I like someone a lot, I start to talk like them too so I relate) // "Walking with his head down, I'm the one he's walking to" - a scene that makes me cringe, something that I think is really only cute if you're experiencing it.

My favorite line of the song, "I'm laughing with my lover, makin' forts under covers" and the following controversial classic, "Trust him like a brother" (personally it's not for me, but I don't think we need to rehash this debate, either you like it or you don't).

For some reason, I don't like the jet stream line, it's just kind of a sensitive ear hole thing for me.

In KOMH, I love the first 2 lines, I hate the baby line (like trying on clothes? Interesting choice of simile).

Delicate has "Dive bar on the East Side, where you at? / Phone lights up my nightstand in the black / Come here, you can meet me in the back" which I just love as it really paints a picture and "Dark jeans and your Nikes, look at you" which is just funny to me. It makes me think of all the crushes I had where I thought a boy was SO HOT and looking back now it was just some guy in a graphic tee and skinny jeans. The Bridge too: "Sometimes I wonder when you sleep, Are you ever dreaming of me?" Bridge city, "Enchanted" reference, need I say more? // "Sometimes when I look into your eyes, I pretend you're mine, all the damn time" the wording sounds off to me? I don't like all the "i" sounds and kinda hate the sometimes/all the time thing. Is it sometimes or all the time? I'm confused.

And I recognize it's exactly the point of the song, but I like the party parts and I don't like the following drama/shady parts. I really love how Taylor writes about partying in TIWWCHNT, it is SO Gatsby. I'm not a huge fan of the prechoruses.

This was a lot, but I hope this helps to support the thesis other anons proposed. (And to hopefully soothe the burn of rep slander, I hope you will accept a peace offering: NYD has the most consistently strong songwriting imo. There's no lines I don't like there!)

Mentally in order to soothe my reputation heart, there was a part of me that started to try to logic my way into you loving some lyrics but equally not liking others and trying to dive into the why of it all and perhaps it's because reputation is designed as an album with two faces of the same coin. That it's intentionally created to be simultaneously off-putting and raw or harsh contrasted precisely against a soft vulnerable underbelly. Especially because the song that most obviously exposes that underbelly is a song that you find zero fault with. This is what I tell myself amidst the SLANDER anyway. (Joking. Loving. I swear. /sweats nervously)

re: "You try on calling me baby like trying on clothes" // Unclear if it's because this line sort of kind of has a fashun reference and so I'm biased but I've always loved this line because it's such a Taylor-ism to combine two common turns of phrase and smush them together to create a new meaning. In this case I just think it's such a soft and novel way to describe the beginning stages of a relationship. Like those first few weeks/months where you're feeling Feelings but it's not The Time to say those three words yet so you're like "I ... Care? About you? A lot? A Lot. Haha. But only if you care a lot too I mean whatever it's fine ... But wait do you care about me a lot also? Pls tell me okthanksbye."

But otherwise I thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and being willing to do so. It's hard to put yourself on the line - esp when they are thoughts you're sure that the recipient will probably disagree with ;) I hope it's a testament to this space that you felt open enough to share and I'm grateful you did!

dude believe me i only just thought up 90% 9f this while doing my math homework last night so yea this is very barebones and this is very very new have very little to offer but um imma try to explain a bit more fjdjdc SO ANYWAYS GRADE 11

Warning: this is very long and I am very sorry aaAAAA also i only just thought of this last night and a while ago while attending class so um yea it's chaotic.

the songs i've mentioned so far in the tag ramble aren't um consecutive so yeah there are a lot of blank spaces in between fjsjsj and yea I haven't figured out the other leads and their arcs yet (probably 5-6 leads). for now um the planned songs feature 3 of the leads:

Kate - basically answers the question of What If Eva Sanchez Was The Protagonist and What If Eva Sanchez Saw The Hell That Is Don't Even (in this show, this song is called "Anakpota?" or "The Fuck?"); she's a transferee and is having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the new school environment; her reasons for transferring run a bit deeper than just "humanities is a lot more interesting than stem or business shits"; i guess her main character themes are burnout, the want for childlike wonder again and overcoming the fear that comes with chasing what you really want and no i am definitely not self projecting what are you guys talking about smh rhhdhs /hj (altho i admit that this is loosely based on my own experience with deciding to transfer schools) and yea she's a very closeted lesbian that slowly starts to comes out to others and to herself more throughout the course of the show. and also she gets a girlfriend YAY

Noel - rn i don't have that much planned out for him cause u know barebones plot but so far um i guess he's the chill dude, overall good guy, rantaro amami from danganronpa v3 vibes, and he's initially framed as the "love interest" for Kate esp in the song "Ikaw Ba Ay..." or "Are You..." (i wanted that to be a play on the typical Filipino Teen Hetero Romance CAUSE THAT SHIT IS IN EVERYWHERE JFJSJD I AM GONNA MAKE A WHOLEASS RANT ON THAT SOON AND NOBODY CAN STOP ME) but surprise motherfucker BOTH OF THEM ARE GAY AND BOTH BOND OVER IT AND BECOME BEST FRIENDS YAY WOOOO i kinda want him to be like the typical "Filipino Teen Heartthrob" star student with the twist being that he's gay and not make that a throwaway joke cause um yea that's a throwaway joke here that someone who is real catch for the heteros but is actually gay is "sayang" or "worthless" here.

Ella - ngl she is probably gonna end up as the main lead here fjdjd i'd say she has riley+chess vibes aka The School's Hotshot Achiever and Student Leader That Is Very Intimidating But Is Actually Really Freaking Kind and i guess with a dash of Kate Dalton-ish snark. Like i said the plot is barebones rn so i dunno anything but i do imagine them being the one that drives the plot forward due to her outspokenness. I also imagine her to be the one (along with Noel) that makes Kate a lil bit more comfortable with her sexuality and yup you guessed it Ella is gay too (bi to be specific oh and she uses she/they pronouns) and altho still a bit closeted, they're a bit more comfy with it. also they become Kate's gf yay!

those are the leads that i have kinda planned out so far but yea i still gotta expound kna lot of atuff and make up more leads for this but then again i just started conceptualizing this last night so ANYWAYS HERE ARE THE OTHERS SONGS THAT I LITERALLY JUST THOUGHT UP LAST NIGHT (aside from the ones already mentioned)

+ "Nakakapanibago" or "Well This Is New" - Ella and Kate work together on a school project aaand gay panic ensues. both of them take turns in addressing the audience and panicking over each other in um er an "Oh My God She's Very Fucking Cute What The Fuck" way. it kinda has What Is This Feeling from Wicked vibes if you remove the aggression and antagonization jdjsd and i kinda emphasize on how overwhelmed they are cause for Kate, everything - from the school to the subjects to the people - is new and her attraction to Ella is like a cherry bomb on top of a chaos cake while for Ella, who has studied in the school since kindergarten which is why nothing about the school fazes her anymore, Kate is a literal breath of fresh air and the spontaneity scares them and excites them at the same time. The number is comedic (and is chance for me to add a shit ton of wordplay cause yAY WORDPLAY) but i guess also hints at their fears which will definitely come into play later.

+ "Mabuting Laban" or "Good Fight" - a group number led by Ella, this is the first song in the musical that isn't mostly comedic. like um the musical so far (before this song) is mostly somewhat of a parody-just-for-laughs-don't-take-this-seriously piece but with this, the show finally hints to something a lot more serious and insightful. so basically ella tells kate (this scene comes right after the Nakakapanibago sequence) that they have noticed that the latter is um very very shocked at the blatant show of LGBTQ+ stuff. Kate mentions that altho many students have since then spoke up for LGBTQ+ acceptance, things were a lot more conservative back in her former school (once again wooo definitely not self projection /hj) so like seeing all this is very new to her. Ella then mentions that things weren't always like that - a lot of fighting had to be done in order to get to that point. and because most of the students already were branded with a rebellious reputation (for a lot of delinquent behavior), they really didn't give a fuck anymore if they were being controversial or not. What mattered was that they would make the school environment a lot more welcoming for themselves and for others. That sentiment is also shared by other leads singing along as they go out of their way to ensure a much better environment for everyone (in terms of lgbtq+ rights, undoing the stigmatization of mental health matters, student activism yadda yadda)

(oh and also this kinda serves as something that bridges the prejudices between the two schools since Ella's school is famous for a lot of student delinquency while Kate's former school is famous for being known as the "Best School In The Region With The Best Students" (which is why Ella understands why the students in Kate's school are a bit more hesitant to speak up because Kate's former schoolmates got way too much to lose) and the rivalry those schools have with each other cause students from ella's school think those from kate's school are pompous little shits while those from kate's school think that ella's schoolmates are delinquents and yes this is commentary on the dynamic my former school'scstudents and my current school's students share) (i should probably give this its own song)

+ "Ayoko" or " I Don't Want It" - (this does not come right after Mabuting Laban fjsjd i honestly dunno where to put this) this comes right after a conversation regarding her reputation in her former school and yea this is Kate poking fun at the "I Want" song musical trope. Like um she addresses the audience saying something along the lines of "oooohh wow complicated backstory exposition! you are probably expecting a song rn ala "How Far I'll Go" from Moana but guess what bitches fuck you all cause i'm gonna sing a song about the things I don't want just to fucking annoy you." it starts off as incredibly satirical and um Kate Dalton-vibes all throughout the scene with lots of pettiness which will then gradually transition to her singing about how she threw all the opportunities presented to her by the former school just because she really didn't want to do them and was tired of saying "yes" just to be enough for them. She then starts singing about her taking control of her own narrative by finally leaving the school. She still laments about those lost opportunities and admits that she still kinda wants to pursue those, but if she has to sacrifice rest for greatness, then she doesn't want it. The song ends with a verse akin to most I Want songs as she finally admits what she really wants the most: rest and wonder.

also here's a verse i made up just a while ago

+ "Halos Lagi Nalang"or "Almost Always The Same" - if this sounds familiar yes i rambled about this before gjdjdjd I started conceptualizing this song even before i even started conceptualizing the musical. So yea this is in Act 2 the song starts with mentioning the exhaustion that comes with being an LGBTQ+ teen in the philippines cause yup same old conservative religious bullshit same old same old shit and despite many a lot of people advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, nothing ever changes around here because well conservative religious bullshit. so yea this is kind of an extension of "Good Fight" but make it more about the burnout felt by a lot of teens that want something better than whatever we have right now. Then it will also apply to the other causes that the leads fight for (activism,destigmatization of mental health stuffs, etc). I'd say it's a combination of Before the Breakdown + Move On musically speaking (yea PMA has influenced me by a LOT). eventually this becomes one of the star numbers fo the show cause yea all the leads will do a shit ton of singing and harmonizing (but for here i'd say Noel and Kate have a tiny bit more of the spotlight since for now they are the ones with the very LGBTQ+ based plotlines). I really REEAAALLY want this song to work aaaa i've been playing around with the melody a lot recently and if i can't write the whole musical, then i'll be content with at the very least writing this song

+ "Try Lang Natin" or "Let's Try It Out" - this is a very barebones sequence atm but basically it's a scene where both Kate and Ella come to terms with their fears related to uncertainty and go "fuck it we don't know jackshit about the future anyway so why not ondulge a bit and ejoy what we have today" and decide to start going out with each other YAYYYYY and also this is like one of the few scenes here were Ella is much more visibly nervous compared to everyone else in the scene so yay for helping each other come to terms with their own vulnerabilities WOOOOO (also paige i remember you saying once that kate and eva could've had a Forever reprise duet right? And correct me if i'm wrong but i think u said it could be about eva assuring kate that she won't go anywhere? WELP I'M STEALING THAT JFJSJJDF /lh /hj AND YUP KATE AND ELLA ARE BASICALLY UM KINDA KATEVA IF YOU SQUINT SO THANK YOU PAIGE FOR THAT IDEAAAA)

Hi anons! Here is everything you wanted to know about nazarenos and more.

What are nazarenos?

Each day of the Holy Week includes special processions. During these somber processions, the streets of Spain are filled with parade floats, candles, crosses, and the sound of beating drums. A sacred Easter song, or saeta, is also sung during the procession. It's sung acapella into the open air, which creates a sound that echoes throughout the town and can be quite moving.

On the floats, you may see grand statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary or representations of Jesus' crucifixion. These floats are quite heavy, but they are not carried through town on trailers as you may be imagining. Instead, costaleros carry them on their shoulders. These men are usually hidden behind draped fabric as they carry the floats, yet they are expected to do so with grace and steadiness. Because they are not able to see, they listen to el capataz, whose job it is to guide the float.

Alongside the floats walk los nazarenos who dress in long robes and cone-shaped hoods. Los nazarenos wear a veil to cover their faces, keeping the participants anonymous and humble. Sometimes, to remind them of Jesus' suffering, nazarenos will march barefoot or with chains around their ankles. Female participants wear a traditional black veil called a mantilla to hide their face, and march with their heads bowed through the procession.

Most participants are members of a Christian brotherhood. In the past, women were not allowed into the brotherhoods, but it is becoming more acceptable today. During the Holy Week, each brotherhood wears the colors of their group and organizes a procession with their own special theme. Some of these processions can carry on for hours and even late into the night.

Why would it be controversial to feature nazarenos in Amira's season?

Nazarenos, costaleros, saetas, the women with the mantillas, imagery of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the crucifixion are all sacred traditions and images of the Spanish Catholic church. Idk if you've noticed, but the Catholic church is quite powerful. It's not a coincidence that the most Catholic countries (Belgium, Spain, Italy) that had Skam remakes all did away with the religion storyline in Isak's season.

For a TV show to take this imagery and feature it in a season dealing with Islam, esp if it was meant to equate Amira's faith and devotion with the nazarenos' faith and devotion, would be nothing short of heretical for the Spanish Catholic church. (On the other hand, see other anons for why it would be iconic.) It would incite a shitstorm in Spanish mass media that would make the pan drama look like a bunch of old ladies playing a game of bridge.

Why would it make English speakers angry?

The clothes and hats that the nazarenos wear have been around since as far back as the 16th and 17th century. The problem? In the 20th century (starting with the movie The Birth of a Nation), the KKK stole ~the lewk~ from the nazarenos, much like the Nazis did with the Hindu swastika. So, to people who have never seen a nazareno in their life, they look like KKK members. Hell, even I, as I'm typing this, want to reassure people that nazarenos have nothing to do with the KKK or racism or antiblack violence. They literally just walk around carrying a float with a Jesus or a Virgin Mary statue.

Red Desert - OOF harmonies okay I see you !! Intro is hella soulful don’t tell me I’m about to cry ALREADY guys… okay that bass in the bg is thicccc and I’m living for it OOF AND THEN THE CHORUS HITS AND THOSE DRUMS BITCH THIS SONG IS SO GOOD ON JUST THE FIRST LISTEN Y’ALL AHHHHH and then that TRANSITION from chorus to second verse my mans ashton did not disappoint !! Guys I’m really feeling this song holy shit it’s so good. Bitch this RED in the bridge is rly TEASING ME like bitch KEEP GOING!!!!!!!!!! Low key this song sounds like it’s 90% saying “red desert” over and over but I’m not complaining issa bop and a half !!! AHHH THAT ENDING AND THEY REALLY WENT TO A LOWER NOTE THAT WAS SO GOOD if that ain’t my fave song on the album i’ll be hella shook. Rating: 10/10 obviously

No Shame - I’ve liked this song since the very first time I heard it it’s actually such a bop. I can’t wait to drive around with this song blasting in my car. I LOVE when Luke says “Go on and plaAaAaAce me” it’s so pretty!!! Rating: 9/10 I just wish the bridge had something different I’m not a big fan of sos ALWAYS doing slowed down choruses for bridges and once you notice it it’s hard to stop lol

Old Me - I wasn’t a huge fan of this song the first time I heard it and genuinely didn’t think it’d grow on me AT ALL, but even after the second listen I really liked it, and I’ve really come to appreciate, like, the fan service message behind it? And that music video just made me love it more. The thing I didn’t like initially and still am not a huge fan of is how autotune-y the song sounds. I know everyone uses autotune, but imo it’s way too noticeable in the song to the point where it sounds a little unpleasant once you catch it. Rating: 8/10

Easier - Okay to be honest, I hate this song LMAO like one time I was crying in the shower while I was listening to my music on shuffle and this song came on and I literally stopped crying to change the song and then went back to crying daskjfkaljl Honestly the verses are really catchy and I like the prechorus but god I DETEST the chorus so fucking much it’s so fucking annoying and that’s low key like most of the song,,, I don’t even wanna finish the song but imma force myself to lmaooooo Rating: 3/10

Teeth - I love the bass at the beginning I’m such a slut for thicccc basses. I also like how crisp? Luke’s voice sound initially idk if that’s like a weird thing to say lol. I also hate the chorus here but not as much as Easier and the other parts of the song def make up for it. Rating: 6.5/10

Wildflower - This song was also like Old Me to me where I didn’t really love it at first but really liked it the second time. It’s definitely not gonna be a favorite of the album or a song I’m probs gonna remember forever but I bet it’s gonna be a BOP at concerts which is always appreciated. PLUS I love that Calum is singing he has a very unique voice I think. Also side note I justopened the livestream and it’s a hot mess lmaooo Ash rly fucking fucked up and needed to move it onto Cal lmaoo here I thought I was in sync with everyone smh. Rating: 7.5/10 with room to grow with more listens i’m assuming

Best Years - Anyways moving on from the livestream mess from these kids who don’t know technology,,, oof first impressions: sounds like same vibes as ghost of you?? I love the line “I’ll build a house out of the mess” or whatever. The part where he sings “best yeeaaarrs” is uhhh kinda weird? I thought that when Luke sang this on live but I thought it might sound better on the track but lmao nah I still think it sounds awkward tbh. But the verses are cute. Lover of Mine - Okay acoustic song of the album icu icu “Butterfly lies chase them away” interesting I like that “dance around the living room” 👀 oof this pre-chorus is really good I’m such a slut for good prechoruses !! Luke’s voice sounds so soothing and smooth but the drums in the background in the second half are a little? Much? I don’t know maybe they’ll grow on me… I really like the lyrics of this song, I didn’t focus completely on everything but,, dare I say,,,, it might be some of their strongest writing yet??!? Omg I love love love these instrumentals near the end esp the piano sounds so beautiful and kind of reminded me of the interlude after San Francisco. Overall I think this song was honestly very beautiful. Rating: 8/10

Thin White Lies - more bass yessss it sounds so good,, are these lyrics about depression? Ehhh not feeling this chorus at all, too much going on and it’s just not a bop and that’s my only criteria for liking songs lmaoo. This song is giving me Empty Wallets + Babylon vibes kind of? Which isn’t rly my favorite vibe in songs tbh it’s just not for me, I don’t think it’s a bad song, though. “I don’t really like me anymore” :((((( mood Rating: 6/10

Lonely Heart - That one two three was so hot ngl,,, ANOTHER acoustic song?? Okay okay interesting. WOAH WHEN THEY CAME IN together god I love that and this OH OH OH part sooo catchy yesss okay also smth I’ve noticed 5sos doing a lot: quiet beginning (or quiet verses) and loud/bop-y choruses… that’s like half the album look me in the eyes and tell me I’m wrong !! It’s the equivalent of YB being mostly normal guitar verses and then instrumental pre-choruses lmao at least this I like a lot more WOAH THAT BRIDGE???????? WHO IS SINGING THAT IS THAT MICHAEL? I literally don’t recognize whose voice that is has it been that long since I heard his voice am I tripping?? But either way that was really cool. The song overall was pretty? Plain but not at all bad and it’ll definitely grow on me with more listens. Rating: 7/10

High - last song im so sad ahhh oof that sound it sounded like Michael? And it was umm very ear orgasmic lmao weird to put two songs that start like that one after the other tho but whatever. Woah the way Luke sang “highly” was so angelic !!! This is very acoustic-y too, but it seems like it’s truly mostly the same vibe throughout. Oof Calum’s harmonies sound so good. I also like the background “Ah”s this song sounds very angelic and pretty. I really like the way he sings the lyrics like “I hope you think of me high… think of me highly” and the part after that kind of mirrors that line. Not a huge fan of the lyric saying your friends just want you to yourself oof friends don’t like imma be honest that line was kinda cringy lmaoo But this song was very pretty, though honestly I doubt I’ll listen to it much or remember it just cause slow songs aren’t my cup of tea, but I can really appreciate the song for what it is and it was enjoyable to listen to. Rating: 8/10

Unrelated: I like that the album isn’t crazy long like every other album of theirs. I much prefer concentrating on 12 great songs than making 16-20 and then inevitably them hating/ignoring a few of them cause they’re like,, way worse than the rest of the album

Average rating: Okay technically 7.1/10 BUT if you take out Easier, then it’s a solid 7.5/10

I liked a lot of the songs and I’m sure I’ll like them even more with more listens, but the only ones I really LOVED were Red Desert and No Shame. It’s honestly a fantastic album, I just don’t think it fits my personal vibe. I’m very proud of the boys!! I really think it’s some of their best work. (Besides Easier,,, she can choke 💀💀)

It certainly didn’t bother me on her first few albums.

IN CONCLUSION:

My feelings are everywhere. Some songs disappointed me but some blew me away - soon you’ll get better is basically the new Never Grow Up for me which is saying a lot. Everything is catchy a hell though even the songs I didn’t like as much. Ultimately i would have liked more songs about varying subject matter esp. self love but as it is, it is still somehow so all over the place. It really just shows how many emotions and phases can be contained within one relationship (i mean I’m assuming every song about a relationship is about joe). I really think that the song about her mom maybe should have been placed somewhere else...I don’t know where I would have put it but that shit is HEAVY. I am so honored that she and her family would share that with us though. I have a million question about how Andrea is doing and if my theory on why tour hasn’t been announced is correct...maybe she will explain more in the interviews/secret session audio we’re getting in the next couple days. I think my favorite song is Lover but that may change. I don’t think any song on here tops my current all time favorite Taylor song though which is CIWYW. That’s a little disappointing but not every song or album has to be my fave! And this album will probably grow on me esp as i hear Taylor’s explanations of it. Rep did. I really did nooott feel good about most of rep at first, it took a few days.

yes I'm on hiatus, yes I need to talk abt this album in depth bc I'm going fucking insane

Persona: this fucking song ok it pays homage to their old hip hop sound whilst still sounding like the ‘current bts’, namjoon’s flow is amazing and works really well with the beat of the song, which is also just... fun and bouncy.... the song just makes me wanna bounce in my chair. the beat is just rlly fun and good and the chorus is catchy and fun and just honestly one of my favourite songs on the album

Boy With Luv: I'm not gonna lie it’s better than what I expected but still.... manages to be the most Okay song on this album. like its not bad I can’t really pick out anything that I specifically don’t like it’s just that there’s also very little that I can pick out that I really like. but what I will say is... yoongi and namjoon’s raps!!! r so sexy!! the rap breaks up the rhythm of the song nicely and is a little unexpected (esp yoongi’s) also whilst I don't dislike halsey’s part she didn’t bring anything new/interesting to the song and I personally find her ad-libs rlly annoying esp her ‘I want it’ (and esp on the non-mv ver bc they’re on Every Chorus) but I do think her effort is commendable singing in a new language/learning a dance is hard and she did ok. the mv was also just generally cute and the dance seems like a lot of fun!

Mikrokosmos: i like this song! it’s gets a tad too repetitive for me by the end but the beat is rlly funky esp when u listen w good quality headphones u can hear a lot of nice little quirks of the synth that it’s harder to pick up w normal quality headphones/out loud. it’s the kinda song that needs ur full attention to be able to appreciate it. I like the chorus even tho it’s quite simple it’s effective at getting the feeling of the song across and the melodies r all so prettyalso the vmin (?) harmonies are so pretty!! the raps are nothing special but they fit the vibe of the song rlly well and add the perfect little change. but my favourite bit is at around 2:40 when the beat drops out and there’s this dreamy synth under the vocals..... that’s the SHIT but the build up afterwards is kinda meh... if they’d finished the song there it would’ve rlly been something special the last bit just doesn’t bring anything new to the song. I just like..... idk I rlly want to like this song!! I really really want to like this song a lot but it’s just an amazing first half that fizzles out by the end...... I still like it tho I would definitely recommend listening to this song w nice headphones!!

Make It Right: ok this song fucking sounds like an ed sheeran song I could fucking tell this song was ed was soon as I heard it. personally this is my least favourite song on the album but there’s still a lot of good things about it. I like the synth initially and hoseok’s singing!!!! (maybe the hoseok stan just jumped out) but generally this is probably the most forgettable song..... dare I even say aggressively mediocre...... the synth motif gets rlly old quite fast like by the end I just don't wanna hear it anymore!! it gets old waaay too fast bc it’s so simple n repetitive and nothing new happens in the song after the first chorus...... it’s just the same.... idk again not bad just quite...... boring....... there’s just no development at all. the vocals during the pre-chorus r also just so breathy although it feels like a creative choice..... I just don’t particularly like it (again personal preference) I feel like this song will b popular w the gp bc again it sounds like an ed sheeran song skdjfh (maybe it gave me flashbacks to when I was 11 ok don't @ me)

HOME: oh yes..... as soon as namjoon starts the song u know it’s gonna b sexy. I like jimin’s voice!! in this song!! like they don’t force him to strain and it sounds good!!! however the autotune kinda makes vocal line all sound like jimin which is just a bit...... weird....... but in general jimin’s parts rlly shine in this song!! all of rap line’s verses are really good!!! it’s just groovy!! ngl the part of this song that gets me the most is the lyrics. but I feel like the song ends weirdly.... it finishes w the bridge and so sounds like it should lead to something else..... it feels unfinished and also bc it’s a bridge it doesn’t musically resolve so furthering the kinda unfinished feel (general pet peeve tho pop artists just fucking resolve ur songs its not that hard!! resolve it!! ur not cool for not resolving at the end of ur song!!)

Jamais Vu: ugh jin starting it off...... big sexy...... ngl hoseok’s first verse is sexy as well and the synth piano is nice the way it goes minor all of a sudden big fuckin sexy but then u know whats the real fucker in this song when jungkook fucking KEY CHANGE all of a fucking sudden like I practically had a heart attack when I heard it for the first time i feel like it’s a perfect musical representation of what jamais vu feels like. just this kinda musical experimentation is what I'm fucking here for!! u used to get a lot of crazy key changes in like early 2010′s kpop but recently ppl r being v safe and western but like BAM this I just love it ok ksdjhfksdj it manages to be jarring but also fit perfectly with the rest of the song like I just love it. I LOVE hoseok’s 2nd verse as well the deep synth brass(??) sounds it’s just sexy ok like this song is sad sexy and I'm fucking here for it. ugh and he layering of hoseok’s sing/rap over the vocals at the end just..... so good. it doesn’t feel messy it’s clean and effective and again matching w theme of jamais vu and kinda gives it a conversational feel. jin and jungkook both sound so good and the song actually builds on previous musical ideas and doesn’t just repeat them over and over again blindly, it feels nice and more experimental (they still didn’t resolve the song but this time I feel like it fits w the idea of jamais vu) the more I listen to this song the more I love it, it might actually be my favourite

Dionysus: holy fuck yes this was by far my favourite song in the album on the first listen like it perfectly manages to fuse the old school hiphop sound bts used to have with rock and I fucking LOVE it like it starts off as a hiphop song and the rock elements enter completely flawlessly. it’s one of the few times I really really like the super over auto-tuned voice like it feels purposeful and it fits so well with the song. also just all of hoseok’s high-pitched nasal rap/ad-libs just fits so well!! yoongi’s rap allows the best to quiet down a little and build up again w out having to have a ‘beat drop’ neccesarily. this song gets me so much more hype than a lot of their other ‘hype’ songs!! the high note/scream as well.... just wow!! it feels like there’s a lot happening but it manages to still sound rlly cohesive and just!! how the fuck did they even think of this idea I'm just in AWE. also hoseok wrote this song like I'm so fucking proud ksjdhf

overall: I was rlly surprised by this album! like genuinely rlly surprised! they managed to create an album that spans so many genres from hiphop to pop to edm to rock, some of the songs on here (mainly jamais vu and dionysus) work both conceptually and just as music. there r some songs that I felt like could’ve been executed better (coughmikrokosmoscough) and had the potential to be really amazing. bts has started being a lot more experimental w their music recently in terms of incorporating elements of other genres into their songs but this album especially feels like they’re pushing the boundaries a lot more. it’s interesting and doesn’t always work but it rlly worked here! I think esp as they’re becoming so much more popular they can kinda afford to experiment more w their music and I'm excited for more stuff like this in the future! generally the album is rlly good, some songs I like less but none that I actively dislike and a lot of interesting music!!

I got tagged by the lovely @onlyoongi to share 10 songs! thanks pal :o) (sorry it’s a few days late though ;____;) so here are 10 songs I’ve been enjoying recently:

“That Girl” by Jung Yong Hwa: this came up in my new music mix last week and let me just say Thank God bc idk if I would’ve found it otherwise, and damn is it a good song. that chorus will be the death of me, between the chirpy keyboard riff and the heavy bass and the catchy-as-hell melody. add a feature from Loco, who’s one of my favorite K-rappers, and you’ve got a real jam. also Yonghwa’s voice is soooo nice (it reminds me of Jun. K’s!), and the little bit of choreo is so cute.

“I Like It” by CLC: I’m loooving CLC’s newest comeback—the title track is so gauzy and soft and beautiful?? I wanted to share this b-side though because even though it goes so many places, they all really work for me, and I can’t stop listening to it because of that. there’s the Hyuna-flavored rap parts, the candy-pink first verse and pre-chorus that feel very CLC to me (with a little bit of “I Got A Boy”-era SNSD), and then the chorus, which has hints of f(x) to me? and it’s got this overall sheen of “Mr.Mr.”-era SNSD. ugh it’s just all so good; CLC never disappoint. the rest of the mini is great too, 100% recommended.

“Difficult” by ONF: ONF are one of my fave debuts this year!!! their title track is so fresh and sweet and catchy, but again, I wanted to share this b-side because I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. this song is so bright and bouncy, especially the horns at the end of the chorus. this track just feels like… a cold grapefuit-flavored pop after a long summer day?? lol that’s very specific, but it’s that kind of refreshing to me.

“Fly High” by Dreamcatcher (I had to link to the dance version bc that choreo!!): another home run from these girls!!! god, I will never get tired of their adrenaline-rush-guitar-heavy-anime-intro vibe. I love the dark, whispery pre-chorus, the soar of the chorus itself, and the lightness of the bridge… it’s all just so good. this totally needs to be the opener for a show about girls who ditch their various after school clubs to save the world by fighting demons.

“Only U” by Laboum (another dance version bc this choreo is so cute): listen, I could go on forever about how fun this song is (Yulhee’s rap?? the horns?? the “baby I baby, baby I like it”?? the “dance time!” before the bridge??), and I could go on even longer about Laboum in general, but I’m just gonna quit while I’m ahead and say that my girls have done it again!! the queens of joyful bops, and the new queens of summer.

“ABC (Middle of the Night)” by VAV: VAV are soooo good. their other comebacks from this year, “Dance With Me” and “Flower,” are also great (esp “Dance With Me”), but “ABC” is the one that’s been stuck in my head recently. so happy and charming, especially the chorus, which just feels so euphoric. and it reminds me of “Baby” by ASTRO, which is another one of my favorite comebacks of 2017, so that’s a nice bonus :o)

“Jelly” by HOTSHOT: Hotshot were one of my initial favorite groups when I got into kpop a couple of years ago, so I feel like I’ve been waiting ages for this comeback, and man did Hotshot deliver. that choreo should be illegal, and the chorus? unreal, and should be illegal as well. baby please don’t gooooooooooo

“I’m Here” by HALO: more people need to be talking about this song!!! and about Halo in general. imo they’ve never had a bad single, and this song is no exception. their cute concepts are great, but I love that they did something a little more mature this time! the horns are so good (lol can u tell I’m a fan of horns in a song), the rap is great, and overall I just love how the song feels kinda slinky and “come hither”? it’s kinda saucy and I’m into it. also the choreo is gr8 (this version shows it so well!)

“Boys” by Charli XCX: I’d heard about this song bc I saw gifs of Khalid and Jay Park in the video, so I finally checked it out and I like it a lot!! the song is so pretty and pinky and dreamy and the music video is the same, and I do love how the mv pokes at the male gaze and puts the guys in the place of most music video girls; it’s a delight to see soft boys for a change. I also love how diverse the guys in the video are!! they’re not all skinny white boys, which is so nice to see. and all the boys are so pretty :—)

“Aaja (feat. Ali Sethi)” by Swet Shop Boys: I actually found them through the Charli XCX video! I was watching it and at this part I was like “ooh who’s that cute guy on the right with Riz Ahmed?” I do some digging and find out that he’s in a group called Swet Shop Boys, and then when I look up their music I’m like “that’s?? Riz Ahmed rapping??? hell YEAH.” not only is their music great (I love the way they blend the sounds of hip-hop with more traditional Indian instruments), but their lyrics are razor sharp—they tend to deal with racism and how Heems and Riz experience that as South Asian men (for example “T5” is about racial profiling at the airport and it’s Brutal). godddd they’re so good, I’m in love. also I love how heavy Riz’s British accent when he raps! it’s fun to listen to.

also honorable mention to “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend” by Weki Meki which I’m not including bc I literally just checked out the mv and I already had this post written up so I didn’t want to change it lol but the song is so. good.
