I am crying in the metaphorical club right now because I'm rewatching the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for the 20th or so time and I just realized, Blondie doesn't begin showing compassion for those who are suffering, dead, or dying until he almost dies himself.

What if when he was recovering at the Mission of San Antonio he saw how the brothers treated the wounded soldiers regardless of the color of their uniform and it changed the way he looked at the world.

Because after, we get moments like these.

"Yeah, well, after lunch, there's nothing like a good cigar."

"Take a slug of this, Captain. And keep your ears open."

And the silent offer of his coat and cigarillo to the dying Confederate soldier.

Prior to Tuco's torture in the desert, Blondie was pretty much untouchable. He's The Good, after all. His cool confidence and subtle air of superiority give you the impression that he's been running schemes for quite some time, just long enough to start getting a little too comfortable with the unforgiving world and his place within it. Then Tuco comes along, and proves a much more dangerous adversary than he'd anticipated. In the desert, when he's forced to recognize his own mortality, his own HUMANITY for the first time, something changes in Blondie. And no matter how small, it's a change for the better.
