im gonna say something that i know a lot of ppl dont wanna hear much less admit.

abusers can in fact be rehabilitated and make right and admit where they went wrong and how theyve hurt people without expecting forgiveness and simply working to be better going forward. we MUST recognize abusers as people not only capable of humanity but capable of starting as or ending up as "good people" and its so so so crucial to recognize the trauma and pain that made them become that way. otherwise we risk dehumanizing them and acting under the delusion that we are completely exempt from being abusive ourselves. and no, recognizing an abuser's pain and trauma is in no way excusing the hurt they've caused and to think that is so dangerously unnuanced. to think that abusers are their own totally separate category of person is dehumanizing and insanely dangerously unnuanced. recognize that the people who have hurt you are just as much human beings as yourself or i can PROMISE you will hurt others the same way. part of breaking the cycle of abuse is seeing your abusers for the flawed people they are rather than monsters to be demonized.

i havent really talked about it on my blog, i think its a bit too heavy for the vibe i generally try to maintain. but i see people!! i see which characters get wiggle room and which characters get none. i think the writing for her character made sense, her flaws and her mistakes were very realistic for the environment she grew up in. we see all of her behavior reinforced by various other people in her life. the writers had debbie make plenty of bad choices, just like pretty much every character on this tv show. but i think debbies biggest crime was that she turned into a teenage girl and behaved accordingly.
