I Miss You, I Love You
Tumblr media
Summary: Ever since Bucky woke up from his cryogenic sleep in Wakanda, you decided to let him have space to recover despite your eagerness to see him. While your relationship is undefined thus far, you tried to find ways to let him know he is being loved.
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: Fluff all around. A hangry and aggressive goat.
Word count: 5k-ish
Notes: Hi, I’m back with a Bucky story! This one has nothing to do with the universe I created for my other Bucky/ Steve AU stories. If you haven’t checked it out, I written A Lot Like Love not long ago. Check out my masterlist too! 😘

———————————————————————
It had been almost five months after the civil war between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. You were one of the enhanced individuals that came out to help Steve but mainly, Bucky to clear his name.
Before the fight, you had kept your powers on the down low even while you were an agent with SHIELD. You still remember when you were kidnapped by HYDRA, specifically Brock Rumlow, a fellow agent that you thought was your ally and friend.
Brock and you had trained in the academy together and were even partners for awhile before Fury pulled you out to support Phil Coulson. Brock always had his suspicions about you when you had to managed to survive life-threatening situations.
Once, you managed to save him from the impact of an explosion only a few feet away. Both of you would not have survived it but the two of you survived unscathed. When Brock tried to search for your information on SHIELD database, it was mysteriously kept confidential and only accessible by Director Fury.
Brock relayed this to HYDRA who seemed to keep an eye on you. During the fall of SHIELD, you had been brought to their base forcefully and that’s when you met Bucky for the first time.
You recognised him immediately but you were forced to kept silence by Alexander Pierce who was hell bent on making sure Bucky had no recollection of who he was. You would have been silenced on the spot when you called out his name but Pierce kept you alive for your value as an enhanced.
Long story short, Bucky came back for you when HYDRA was momentarily defeated by Steve Rogers and his group. After pulling Steve out of the water, Bucky killed everyone remaining in the base and freed you. The both of you made plans to escape the country together.
In the two years he tried to hide from the world and regain understanding of himself, you were there by his side. The two of you developed a close bond that was hard to be placed into a specific category.
You were the only one he trusted and he was the one you wanted to protect. For those two years, the two of you enjoyed each other’s company and fell into domestic bliss. At first, you two lived off the savings that you had while living a simple life in Romania
Soon, he tried to earn a living by doing laborious work while you worked at a local café. The two of you were happy and even though nothing special had happened between the two of you, you were still content.
It’s hard to say if you two were even toeing the lines of relationship but you knew you were at least friends.
Then one day, news of the UN bombing happened. Bucky was on his day off and went to the market to buy groceries for the two of you. He then discovered himself in deep waters when he was framed for a crime he did not commit.
You were still working at the café at the moment it happened. You took your apron off and dashed out of the café when you saw the news on TV. However, by the time you reached, you had arrived at a bust-up home.
Grabbing your passport, you hopped on the next available flight to Germany. Your heart was racing wildly when you saw that Bucky escaped from CIA custody and you wondered where he could have gone.
Once you landed, you received a call on your burner phone and heaved a sigh of relief when you realised Bucky was on the other line. He told you of his plans and asked you to stay low.
“I can’t drag you into this, Y/N. Not after all you have done for me.” He reasoned, almost pleading as he really didn’t want to involve you into his mess. You uprooted your whole life back home and abandoned it so that you could help him.
Bucky didn’t want to take anything more from you. You deserved to live a carefree life without constantly worrying about watching your back all the time.
“I don’t want to leave you, Bucky.” Your voice came out shaking at his request. Several times had he brought up the idea of leaving so that you can return to your previous life, but you pleaded for him to stay.
The two of you had gone through so much together, how could he easily thought of leaving you?
Your ears perked up when you heard the faint sound of an announcement that sounded similar to where you were at. You then realised he was here at the airport.
The airport staff asked for mass evacuation and you made to escape from the crowd. As you hid in a spot trying to figure your next move, you then heard the sound of crashing and explosion. You let your feet bring you to the runway where the fight happened.
Your appearance was one of the many surprises when you came between Bucky and someone who you came to know as the Black Panther. Bucky was shocked to see you while you chided him if he really thought you would abandon him.
Bucky allowed himself to have a feel-good moment amidst the chaos as he thought of how lucky he was to have you by his side. You persuaded Bucky to leave you and continue his plans of going after Zemo. He begrudgingly obliged when he saw how you had fiercely fought to protect him.
Along with the rest, you were brought into a maximum centre in the middle of the ocean for your war crimes. Added that you are an unregistered enhanced individual that popped up from nowhere and aided in the fugitive escape of Steve and Bucky, you were considered a criminal too.
Everything seemed like it was going downhill until Steve Rogers broke you out and had everyone brought to Wakanda to seek refuge. You barely reunited with Bucky when he told you that he wants to go into cryogenic sleep.
He didn’t believe he was safe until that was a solution to the brainwashing that HYDRA had subjected him to. Bucky regretted the decision the moment he saw the tears welling up in your eyes.
Even with only one arm left, he made sure to hold you tight in his arms to comfort you.
“Wait for me, Y/N. I want to come back as better man.” He spoke while he rested his chin on the crook of your neck.
“You’re already the best man to me, Bucky.”
Your words made Bucky’s heart soar and swore you were the best thing that could have happened to him after 70 years of pain and suffering. As he pulled away to take in your face for one last look, he then leaned in to place a gentle kiss on your forehead.
After you got over your emotions, you reassured him that you will be fine. You wanted the best for him even if it means he could not be with you for awhile. In the two years you spent together, Bucky had confided in you that he was most afraid of not being in control of himself ever again. HYDRA robbed him of his own person and Zemo took advantage of that too.
You wanted Bucky to have the chance to be free again so you let him go. As he walked over to the machine, he threw you one last longing look and a nod to Steve before he stepped in.
Once the machine closed around him and reality sunk in, you let yourself fall to the ground and let out a deep exhale. Steve Rogers had learnt about you as Bucky talked about you while they were on the jet to Siberia.
Steve was grateful that his pal had found someone like you. Steve bent down to your level and patted your back to soothe your pain. You returned a smile to Steve in kindred spirit, knowing that you weren’t the only one who was affected.
Before he decided to leave, Steve had asked you to stay in Wakanda as he wished that you do not join his group on the run as fugitives. He did not say this to you but he also hoped that you will be here once Bucky wakes up too.
You gladly accepted his request and soon found yourself enjoying Wakandan hospitality.
———————————————————————
As a guest, King T’Challa welcomed you like a friend and you had grown to learn more about the beautiful country and its culture.
You had alternated your time in between hanging out with Shuri in the labs and teaching in the villages. You had the honour to become an assistant teacher and grown to love your newfound life.
Shuri had been giving you updates on her progress with Bucky and you had made several trips to see him while he was in a state of sleep. However, it only served to pain you and those trips had lessened once you found yourself busy with your students.
When Shuri finally informed you she had managed to fix Bucky, you were thrilled. She told you of her plans to move him out of the lab and into one of the villages to recuperate for his own mental well-being.
She asked if you wanted to visit him but you suddenly found yourself hesitant to do so. You thought that perhaps, it is best for Bucky to have time to himself. After all, he deserved it after all he has been through.
Maybe, you should keep out of his way for now.
“I seriously don’t understand, why would you avoid him if you like him?” Shuri shook her head when she heard your explanation.
“Boyfriends are so complicated, I am never getting one.” She added on while fiddling with her tech.
“He’s not my boyfriend! He’s just a friend.” The pitch in your voice increased in response to her statement. Bucky was not your boyfriend at all, although you wished-
Shuri stopped what she was doing and looked at you like she did not believe a word you had said. “Sure and I am not a genius then.” Rolling her eyes, Shuri shook her head in disbelief before going back to her screen.
As you made to leave, Shuri stopped you to tell you that Bucky was currently residing in a village twenty minutes from you. He was given his own hut and asked to live a simple life of farming.
You couldn’t have imagine Bucky and farming together. Gathering your courage, you made your way to the village.
You were surprised to see two of your students, learning that this was where they lived. Trying to be discreet, you thought of a way to ask for directions to Bucky’s hut without making it obvious.
As one of your students stared at you fumbling to come up with right words, one of them took you by the hand and dragged you to follow him. The other one fell in steps behind you and soon, a single hut located on a low-lying field came into view.
There was a large space next to the hut dedicated for a fencing space for what seemed like farm animals. You spotted a few chickens, several goats and recognised another one of students from your class sitting casually on a branch of a big tree.
Your brows when you realised there was no one else until you felt your student patting your arm for your attention. You could feel your breath hitched when someone came into your line of sight from the corner of the hut.
Eyes blinking fast and heart racing wildly, you realised who it was. Taking long heavy strides, you could him leaning his weight on his right side as carried a heavy sack.
At a moment’s glance, you could see that his hair had grown longer and his beard had grown thicker. He had a brown scarf tied around his shoulder to his neck to cover where his metal arm once was.
He looks slightly tired but he no longer bore a shadow over his face. Even while standing far away, you could tell he looked happy and your heart warmed at the sight of a smile forming on his face when a small goat came over to him.
The goat was prodding at the sack that Bucky was carrying as if to tell him he was hungry and Bucky chuckled at how impatient the goat was acting like a small child.
How could he even have looked more beautiful than he already was?
“White Wolf! White Wolf!” Your two students started exclaiming as they ran down to where he was. During your time in Wakanda, you managed to pick up a bit of their language. You wondered why were they calling him that?
Your students gathered in front of him excitedly and Bucky’s face formed a confused look at their sudden enthusiasm. When you saw one of your students pointed in your direction, you panicked and started backing up.
You quickly turned your back and made a run for it, hoping Bucky have not spotted you. You were not ready to see him yet. What would you even say? How would you even react?
Quickly making you way back to your own hut, you threw yourself on your bed and groaned with frustration. You felt like an absolute idiot.
The next school day when you entered class, your students asked why you left early and you came up with an excuse that something came up at home.
Kids being kids, they didn’t think much of it and continued talking to you. As you listened, you learnt that Bucky had moved to their village for nearly two months and described him as a quiet but kind man who lets them hang out at his place whenever they want.
Given the two of you are the only ‘foreigners’ that they knew, they had hoped to introduce you two. You chuckled at their sweet intentions, not knowing the two of you already knew each other.
After school session was over, you had made your way to the nearby marketplace and spotted something that caught your eyes.
As a guest, you were not required to pay but you insisted on paying the merchant with the allowance you were provided by the royal family. Grabbing the paper bag, you made your way back to the village where Bucky lived.
Your students hopped in joy when they saw you coming and ran up to you. Giving them hugs, you said your hellos. You then asked them if they could do something for you.
The eight-year olds nodded enthusiastically and you took out some plums you had gotten. You gave them one each and then shook the bag with the remaining ones before speaking.
“White Wolf.” You recalled their nickname for Bucky and tried to enunciate their native language to the best of your abilities. Before they sprinted off, you held their shoulders and brought a finger to your lips, making a shush sound.
You tried to explain to them that you did not want Bucky to know the plums came from you. Nodding their heads, you took it as sign as they understood before letting them go.
You hoped that it would have made him happy. When you meet your students again, they told you of how Bucky was happy with the plums. They claimed he finished one in two bites and mimicked how large he opened his mouth like a wolf.
You laughed at their dramatics and felt pleased with yourself. You then asked them if they knew Bucky goes to the market and they shook their heads. They then explain he does farm work most of the time and he cooks food that their mums or neighbours send him.
You processed the information and you came up with a plan. Requesting for an oven from Shuri (to which she threw a strange look your way upon the request), you decided to make and send Bucky some baked goods with the aid of your trusted little helpers.
It was your way of showing your care for him and you hoped he finds comfort in them. You always made sure to have your students come up with excuses to pass them to him, explaining that they learnt this during school and wanted to share with him some.
Yes, that should sound believable enough to not rouse suspicions.
You had your students sending food over twice a week for three weeks now. They helped you on the account that they adored you as their teacher and that they could help themselves to your treats.
You always looked forward to the next day when they would tell you how Bucky reacted and grinned foolishly when they told you Bucky always received your gifts with a smile.
You were simply content with this fact.
———————————————————————
Bucky Barnes had ever felt more at peace in a long time. He was eternally grateful to Princess Shuri who had ingeniously came up with a way to deprogram the brainwashing that HYDRA had ingrained in him.
When he first woke up, he was met with the wide smiles of Shuri and T’Challa who eagerly awaited his recovery. Following a few more tests, he was then cleared medically and T’Challa discussed with him on his next plans.
With Shuri and several Wakandan medical professionals’ input, they decided Bucky should have some time to unwind in a quieter village. He was accepting of the idea. When Shuri caught Bucky often looking around for something, she asked what’s wrong.
He asked for you. Shuri told him that what you were doing and he felt pleased at what you had been doing. He was glad you were safe and happy. When Bucky asked if you were coming to visit, Shuri had said that you wished Bucky would have some time to himself first.
Hearing Shuri said that, Bucky’s disappointed face mirror that of a wounded puppy. Bucky didn’t press on further. He knew you wanted the best for him and took it with an open-mind.
Shuri was bewildered at the entire situation. Aren’t the two of you suppose to run back into each other’s arms in some grand romantic gesture? Why were the two for you even acting this way?
Love was confusing and she was glad her love was only for science as it would not make her act all weird like the two of you.
When Bucky slowly settled into his new life, he asked for some farming supplies so that he focus his energy and attention into something productive.
His day revolved around the mundane tasks of tending of his animals, chopping wood for the local villagers and growing his own food produce. However, Bucky could say that he was finally happy.
Although there was something that would make him happier…. Bucky sometimes wondered what you were doing from time to time.
He could imagine you with your infectious smiles and energy, you were doing good with children. You deserved to be happy while he believed he shouldn’t. Although gradually lesser, Bucky sometimes still woke up to the horrors of his past actions. Bucky felt that he was not deserving of you.
As Bucky tried to distract himself of such thoughts, the sounds of children’s laughter and feet running made him looked up. In their excitement, the village children’s words came out as gibberish and he was having a hard time to understand what they were saying.
When one of them stretched their hand to point towards the slope, he saw a wave of dress fabric whisk by. Bucky was still trying to pick up the language and learn what the children were trying to say.
All he heard was a single word that he had yet to learnt.
“Teacher! Teacher!” The children kept on repeating while jumping up and down.
The next following day, Bucky was trying to brush off a nosy goat (who was the brunt of its litter) that kept on bothering as he went on to do his chores. He had named the goat Steve after it reminded him of his long-time pal.
His ears perked up when he heard the nickname that the village children had gave him. White Wolf, he learned from Shuri.
All of them had a fruit in one of their hands while one had carried an extra paper bag. The child pushed it towards his hands and he opened it up to see- plums.
The fruits brought him back to his memory of that very day. While it was a sad memory, he got over it and thanked the children. Bucky went on to ask where they got it from.
The children looked at him for a moment before shrugging their shoulders and running off to play. He brushed it off as a small kind gesture and took a big bite into the fruit. He didn’t know how a simple plum could have made his day.
The following days and weeks, the children returned back to his home bearing gifts. He was surprised to see familiar food from home such as bread, brownie and cookies.
His curiosity was peaked as these foods were not normally part of Wakanda’s culture and he wondered where the children had gotten it from. He tried to question the children the first few times and they had only returned sheepish grins before going off to play.
After the third time, one of the children said school and Bucky grew an even more confused. They got this from school? Or did they learn how to make this from school? There was something familiar about the baked goods that he received and he wondered when he had seen them.
———————————————————————
You woke up this morning with another plan. You had decided to bake bread loaves and have them delivered to Bucky. You were in your kitchens since this morning and the bread had been ready well after lunch time.
Wrapping them up, you made your way to the village and greeted several people you knew. One of your students immediately ran towards you when he saw what you carried in your hand.
You passed him the bread you made which he delightfully passed onto his mother who gave you a grateful smile. When you passed him a second bag, he immediately knew what you wanted him to do and headed off.
Normally, you would have turned and walked back home. However, curiosity had gotten the better of you. After hearing from your students how Bucky was delighted with your gifts, you were eager to see him in person.
Your eyes caught your student walking not far from you and you decided to follow behind. Soon, you saw him making his way down the gentle slope leading towards Bucky’s hut.
Bucky’s head tilted when he heard your student calling for him. You made sure to hide behind a nearby tree and peeked cautiously to take a look at Bucky.
Bucky can be seen with a toothy grin as he accepted the bag and patted their student’s head affectionately in thanks. Your heart leaped at the sight and a sense of satisfaction overcame you, leaving you in absolute glee.
What you did not expect while you were in self-bliss was a certain animal creeping up on you from behind. You jerked when a tug was felt from your side and you turned to see a small white goat nibbling at your bag. It must want the bread that you made but you could not it have it. Were goats even allowed to eat bread?
You tried to tug it from his bite but you realised he was very persistent and that you were having a hard time. It’s like it could do this all day as it became an apparent tug of war.
“Hey!” You involuntarily let out a scream as the animal start bleating aggressively. Weren’t goats supposed to be cute and friendly?
When you managed to have the final tug out of the goat’s mouth, you could not even rest for a moment as you saw the goat heading towards for you.
You instinctively ran in circles to throw the goat off your trail but it was pretty persistent. Boy, did it ran really fast too?
You wished you had super speed instead and start flailing as the goat bleated angrily while chasing you.
Your screams attracted the attention of Bucky who wondered what had happened. A woman’s scream was rarely heard in his part of the area and Bucky went to find the source of the sound.
Of all the scenarios that he could have imagined, Bucky had least expected you to see you running and screaming for what it seemed like your dear life. His eyes moved to see that Steve, his annoying runt of a goat was chasing you vehemently with a passion.
Bucky wanted to stop and laugh out loud at how terrified you look of Steve who barely stood at your waist level. When your eyes finally meet, you sped up and jumped onto Bucky who luckily was able to hold you steady even with one arm.
Circling your legs around his waist so that the goat would not be able to reach you, you made sure you wouldn’t fall by securing your arms around Bucky’s neck.
“Save me from this demon, Bucky!” You pouted and pleaded. Hearing the goat’s bleating coming nearer, you tightened your grip onto Bucky and looked over Bucky’s shoulder to see its beady eyes staring intently at the bag in your hands.
Bucky did not want to make of the situation as his senses first alerted him of how close you were to him. The two of you were chest to chest and he could your heart beating fast. Bucky breathed in your familiar scent that he didn’t knew he missed until now.
When he heard your whine once more, he was brought back to reality and started to catch up with how funny the scene was.
“You mean Steve?” Bucky chuckled in response to your previous statement.
“You name him, Steve?! Why would you do that? Steve is so sweet-” Pulling your face away from the crook of his neck, you came face to face with Bucky. You were nearly shocked by the little distance that lied between your faces and you recalled how much you missed his beautiful cerulean eyes.
Taking a nervous gulp, you also started blinking fast when you realise you were so close to Bucky that you could feel each other’s breath. Bucky locked you in hard stare as he didn’t speak, only using his eyes to communicate.
Your eyes broke contact with his and fleet to his pink lips for a moment. What were you doing? Bucky caught what you were doing and gulped nervously on his own. The tension between the two of you could be cut with a knife.
Your staring match was then cut off once again by Steve’s excessive bleating.
“Can he eat bread?” You asked him but Bucky was not out of his reverie of you and you had to ask once more to get his attention.
“Does Goat Steve eat bread?!”
“He eats anything-” Before Bucky could finish, you removed the hand that held the bag and threw it far from where you were. Goat Steve’s gaze followed to where the bag landed and he ran for it. With ease, he managed to prod his head into the bag and dragged the loaf of bread out. To start digging in
Seeing that your near-death crisis was over, you hesitantly push away from Bucky and he reluctantly let you down onto the ground. There was a moment of silence between the two of you as neither one of you knew what to say.
Standing awkwardly and looking anyway at each other, the both of you were frantically trying to come up with something to say.
“How are you?” The both of you spoke up at the same time. Your impeccable timing caused the both of you to laugh awkwardly before looking back at each other.
“I’m good.” The two of you answered at the same time once more and you two laughed at the sheer ridiculousness of the situation. Bucky nodded towards you to signal you to speak first.
“I see you are a farmer now.” Mentally slapping yourself, you couldn’t believe that was the first thing you had said to Bucky after he woke up from his cryogenic sleep.
“And I heard you are a teacher now.” Bucky followed in response before widening his eyes in a sudden realization.
“The bread, the other baked stuff, it’s you. The children say they brought it from school. You’re a teacher so-” Putting the pieces together, Bucky realised you were the one who has been sending food to him.
“Were the plums from you too?“
You looked down sheepishly in embarrassment, hand reaching to rub the back of your neck as you tried to come up with an explanation.
“Well, I just want to give you something and they say giving food is an act of love- I mean well not love but you know I want to make you happy so-”
“Why didn’t you give it to me yourself?” Bucky cut into your nervous rambling. You raised your head up to look at him and you swore you caught both hints of anticipation and disappointment lingering on his face.
“I didn’t want to disturb you. You should have some space to recuperate and I didn’t want to intrude-”
“Y/N, I don’t need space! I need you! You have no idea how much I wanted to see you after I woke up.” Bucky laughed at your explanation and stalked closer to you till you were chest to chest again.
You couldn’t believe what Bucky had said. You fidgeted nervously as you asked for confirmation once more. “You do?”
“Of course, doll. You are my everything.” Bucky raised his hand to caress the side of your face tenderly as he spoke.
A mix of emotions started to overwhelm you. You were moved by Bucky’s words but you suddenly felt immense guilt for making him think you abandoned him. A single tear cascaded down your cheeks as you willed yourself to look at him.
“I’m sorry, I never wanted you to feel that way. I missed you so much, I’m glad you’re back.” A smile formed on Bucky’s face when he heard your words. There had been so much longing between the two of you, so much unspoken feelings.
Now or never, you were ready to cross the line of this. Bringing both your hands up to cradle Bucky’s face gently, you smiled lovingly before you pushed your feet up to meet his lips.
Bucky suddenly wished he had his other arm back so that he can engulf you entirely; holding you so close that you would never leave. You took the kiss slow and gently, you wanted to savour this moment to the fullest after holding back for so long.
You pulled back from Bucky reluctantly and you steadied your heart before letting the words out.
“I love you, Bucky.”
The corner of his lips curved up at your confession. You loved him, you really did.
“I love you too, doll.” He spoke with such gentleness and sincerity that it had you smiling in equal enthusiasm. Bucky leaned in to kiss you once more, this time with longing and insatiable hunger.
You returned his fervour as your hands found their way from his chest to his neck and then to the sides of his face. The two of you pulled away to catch your breath and leaned your foreheads against each other’s.
Both of you mirrored each other with beaming wide smiles.
“Blehhhhhhh.” The two of you turned to see Goat Steve looking at the both of you with what it seems like a happy expression.
“Is he actually smiling?” You laughed as Goat Steve let out a happy sounding bleat.
“He’s a punk.” Bucky remarked with a laugh before turning back to looking at your laughing face fondly.
He was happy to have found you, his love.

Like Real People Do Ch 6: The Stain
Tumblr media
Taglist: @p3nny4urth0ught5, @kissofvenom922,
Author’s note: Considering Sam’s TT, it’s very common in the South to give relatives nicknames, especially in the African American community(Just in case anyone was confused during the episode)
Winnie flops down on the couch and sighs.
“Penny for your thoughts.”
“Sam, this whole thing is fucked up.” Winnie rubs her temples.
“Well once this is all over, I’ll leave you and Buck alone.”
“No reason to. He hates me.”
“Huh?”
“ At Sharon’s place. I confronted him and he brushed me off. I mean it was stupid to think that.”
“Wait, you think Buck hates you because he wouldn’t open up to you.”
“Exactly, we’ve talked about stuff before.”
“Stuff like feelings?”
“No. I’m pretty sure we’re just going to stuff those down and then one day, we die.”
“That’s not healthy.”
“Did you imagine us to have a healthy way of coping with our shit?”
“No, but once everything is over, try therapy.”
“I’d screw it up.”
“There’s nothing to screw up.”
“I’d screw up the therapist. There’s a lot, Sam, none of it is great.”
Zemo walks out of the shower with a towel wrapped around his waist and Bucky walks through the front door.
“Well the Wakandans are here. They want Zemo. Bought us some more time.”
“Were you followed?”
“No.”
“How can you be so sure?”
Winnie sits up from the couch.
“Because I know when I’m being followed.”
“It was sweet of you to defend me at least.”
“Hey, you shut it. No one’s defending you.You killed Nagel”
“Don’t put too much stock in it.” Winnie warns. “You mean to an end.”
“You’d be bored without me.” Zemo says to Winnie then adds “ Do we really have to litigate what may or may not have happened.”
“There’s nothing to litigate. You straight shot a man.”
“Point blank.” Winnie adds.
“Sam.”
“What?”
“Karli bombed a GRC supply depot.”
“What? What’s the damage?”
“Eleven injured, three dead. They have a list of demands and are promising more attacks if those demands aren’t met.”
“She’s getting worse.”
“Take it from the man that bombed the UN to know what worse is.” Winnie muses.
“I accept the assistance but I can handle these two.” Zemo pours himself a cup of tea. “I have the will to complete this mission. Do the three of you?”
“She’s just a kid.”
“You’re seeing something in her that isn’t there. You’re clouded by it.”
“Sam, she is a kid, but she’s making some adult moves.” Winnie adds. “But she has done more for the displaced than the GRC ever did.”
“She’s a supremacist. The very concept of a Super Soldier will always trouble people. It’s that warped association that led to Nazis, to Ultron, to the Avengers.”
“You’re talking about our friends.”
“The avengers, not the nazis.”
“So, Karli is radicalized, but there has to be a peaceful way to stop her.”
“It would have to be in some neutral location. I don’t want any surprise attacks. Sam, you’d be the best choice.”
“The desire to become a superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals. Anyone with that serum is inherently on that path. She will not stop. She will escalate until you kill her.Or she kills you.”
“Maybe you’re wrong Zemo. The serum never corrupted Steve.”
“Touche. But there has never been another Steve Rogers, has there?”
“One of a kind, a good man trained to be a soldier.”
“Well, maybe we should give him to the Wakandans right now.”
“And you’ll give up your tour guide.”
“Yes.”
“From my understanding Donya is like a pillar of the community, right? So when I was a kid my TT passed away.”
“Your TT?”
“Yeah, my TT, yeah.”
“Who is your TT?”
“Fine, when I was a kid,my aunt passed away, and the entire neighborhood got together for a ceremony. It was like a week long. Maybe they’re doing the same thing for Donya.”
“We’re not crashing a memorial.”
“Worth a shot.”
“Your TT would be proud of you.” Zemo tosses a piece of candy towards Sam “ Turkish Delight.”
He gestures towards Winnie.
“No thank you. I’ve read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, too many times to be taken in by perfume candy.”
“Shame what’s become of this place. When I was young, we used to come here for fabulous dinners and parties.I know nothing of the politics of the time, of course. But I remember it being beautiful.”
“I’ll play you a song from the smallest violin, later, what we need is information.” Winnie says from behind him.
“I’m gonna take a look upstairs.See what you can find down here. Keep an eye on him.”Sam says leaving the group.
“I’ll stay out of your way.”
Winnie looks around seeing small groups of children playing. She softly smiles.
“You like children?” Zemo asks softly.
“Yeah so.”
“Follow my lead.”
Winnie rolls her eyes but takes Zemo’s outstretched hand.
“Baa baa black sheep have you any wool.”
Winnie sings with him.
“Yes sir, yes, sir, three bags full. One for my master, One for the dame.” Zemo pulls out a bag of the same candy he had offered them, Turkish Delight.
“One for the little girl who lives down the lane.” He sets up a table and pours out the candy.
“Turkish Delight. It was always my son’s favorite.”
Winnie kneels down so she’s at the kids level.
“My old friend Donya passed away. Did you know her?”
“Yes.”
“I would like to pay my last respects. Do you know where her funeral will be?”
Zemo motions for the child to whisper to him the location. She whispers then turns towards him again.
“Is there something else?” He asks.
“Your wife is pretty.” She points towards Winnie.
Winnie smiles, keeping up the appearance.
Sam comes down and stands by Bucky.
“It’s starting to feel like a dead end.”
“The hell are they doing?”
“Do you see these men there?” Zemo asks the child softly.
“Zemo, darling.” Winnie adds putting a hand on his shoulder.
“They are very bad, not to be trusted.” Zemo adds to the children. “Donya is our little secret, okay.”
Zemo and Winnie walk back to the two.
“Cute kids.”
“Ass.”
“Darling, there’s children present.”
“I don’t like them, together.” Bucky breaks the silence.
“I know Buck. I know.”
“Well I got nothing. No one is talking about Donya.”
“Yeah, it’s because Karli is the only one fighting for them.”
Winnie turns to Zemo.
“And she’s not wrong.”
“What do you mean?”
“For five years, people have been welcomed into countries that have kept them out using barbed wire. There were houses and jobs. Folks were happy to have people around to help them rebuild. It wasn’t just one community coming together. It was the entire world coming together. And then boom. Just like that, it goes right back to the way it used to be. To them at least Karli is doing something.”
“You really think her ends justify her means. Then she’s no different than him, or anybody else we’ve fought.
“She’s different. She’s not motivated by the same things.”
Zemo is making cherry blossom tea and brings it over.
“That little girl. What’d she tell you?”
“The funeral is this afternoon.”
“You know the Dora’s coming for you any minute. In fact they are probably lurking outside right now.Keep talking.”
“Leaving you to turn on me, once we get to Karli. I prefer to keep my leverage.”
Bucky stands up and walks over to him. He grabs the tea pot and throws it against the wall.
“You wanna see what someone can do with leverage.”
“Take it easy, don’t engage him. He’s just going to extort you and do that stupid little head tilt thing.”
Zemo straightens.
“Let me make a call.”
“Do you want some cherry blossom tea?
“No you go ahead.”
Zemo turns towards Winnie.
“Uh sure, I’d love some.”
Once Bucky leaves the room Winnie looks at Zemo.
“It’s rude to stare.”
“Infuriating Bucky isn’t going to help you in the long run.”
“You care a lot for him. Pity.”
“Why?”
“Because he will always throw himself into the fight. He will never settle down, or help himself, because not so deep down, he knows he’ll never lose the Winter Soldier side. You saw how easily he went back into it.He believes that he’s not worth the effort. What is that they say about old habits. Ah, they die hard.”
“Pissing me off isn’t helpful to you, either.”
“Why does the truth anger you so?”
“Because I believe that Buck is stronger than everything he’s been through.”
“You have great expectations for James.”
“I do.”
“You think he is worth the effort.”
“Yes.”
“So tell him.”
“Why would I trust you? Two seconds ago you were being a dick. Now I’m supposed to take your relationship advice.”
“So you do want a relationship with him.”
“I’m not talking to you, anymore.”
“How sweet the silence will be.” Zemo gives her a cup of tea.
“Fuck you.”
“Karli Morgenthau is too dangerous for you guys to be pulling this shit.” John and Lemar jog up to where the four are.
“What happened to tracking John?” Sam asks Winnie.
“Someone must have disabled it, it was working before.”
“Ah! How’d you find us now?”
“Come on. You really think two Avengers can walk around Latvia without drawing attention?”
“No more keeping us in the dark.”
“It was nice while it lasted.” Winnie adds to Sam.
“And you..” John walks up to Winnie,” Stop messing with my suit and my shield.”
“Doesn’t feel too good to get tracked by your own stuff, huh.”
“You are interfering with the United States Government.”
“What are you gonna do, kill me.”
“Don’t.” Bucky grabs Winnie’s arm and pulls her back.
“You could start by telling us why you broke him out of prison.”
“He did that himself, technically.”
“This better be an unbelievable explanation.”
“Take it easy before it gets weird.”
“Too late.”
“I know where Karli is.”
“Well, where?” John stops Zemo with a hand on his chest.
“All we know is, it’s a memorial. So we’re going to intercept her there.”
“I still don’t like the idea that we’re crashing a memorial.” Winnie adds.
“That means civilians. High risk of casualties.” Lemar adds.
“Which means we need discretion, you two aren’t exactly subtle.” Winnie gestures between John and Lemar.
“All right, we’ll move in fast. Take her by surprise.” John says.
“Did he not hear me?” Winnie asks outloud.
“I want to talk to her alone.” Sam nods at Winnie.
“I’m not losing her again.”
“You won’t, if you let Sam talk to her. This is his bread and butter.”
“Look the person closest to her died, she’s vulnerable. Now is the best time to reason with her.”
“No wait stop! Hold on! I think we’re way past reasoning with her, unless you forgot that she blew up a building with people still in it.”
“So did Zemo, and he’s here.”
“Winifred, if you really lov…” Zemo starts and is muffled by Winnie’s hand.
“Sam if you walk in there cold, she could kill you.” Lemar reasons with Sam.
“If I go in hot and the op goes wrong, more people will die.”
“You’ll let him do this. You’re gonna let your partner walk into a room with a Super Soldier alone.”
“He’s dealt with worse, and he’s not my partner.”
“I used to counsel soldiers dealing with trauma, okay. This is in my wheelhouse, like Winnie said.”
“I know. And I know those soldiers, which is why I know this a bad idea.”
“Wait John, if he can talk her down, it might be worth a try.” Lemar reasons with John.
“We’ll deal with you later.” John says to Zemo.
“I’m sure it will come to an agreeable conclusion. My associate is just up ahead.”
Zemo leads the way to the small girl he was talking to earlier.
“Hello my friend.” Zemo gives her money,” This is for your family. Can you show us the way?”
The child motions for Zemo and the group to follow her.
“What the hell?”
“Language.” Winnie warns. “ Come on John, there’s a kid.”
The child leads them to the building.
“Karli is in there.”
“All right.” Sam goes in alone.
Zemo is handcuffed to a pipe.
“Hey, you got ten minutes.
“Really?”
“Then we’re doing things my way.”
“Aggressive.” Zemo comments. “ But I get it.”
“John, you okay?” Winnie asks as she watches him begin to pace.
“No, I’m not okay. I wasn’t expecting to see Sam and Bucky, two avengers, an ex member of Shield, and a terrorist that bombed the UN.”
“Okay, and neither did I when Bucky and I came out here. But we’ve done a pretty good job so far.”
“A pretty good job? Really?”
“Yeah, actually with less resources than you have.”
John waits and readjusts his cowl across his nose.
“John.”
“Whatever it is Winnie, I’m not in the mood.”
“I’m not trying to antagonize you, but you really don’t seem okay. Take a few breaths. Sam’s a good man and he knows how these things go.”
Bucky looks up watching Winnie.
“I also know that you want to be a good man. You want to be the best Captain America, you can. And to do that you need a clear head, and some good people around, and a big ass heart.”
“A big ass heart isn’t going to help.”
“I think it helped Steve.”
“Well I’m not Steve.”
“I know. No one is asking you to be Steve, John.”
“She’s right.” Zemo adds.
“Good call, the terrorist agrees with you, Winnie.”
“I’m trying to genuinely help you. Don’t be a dick.”
“You could have helped more by joining us. That tracker you put on my shield is still being dissected. Your modifications on old shield tech is incredible.”
“Governments have agendas and blind spots. I’m not getting back in just to be told it’s happening again.”
“So what’s next then, for you?” John asks.
“I don’t know, but I’m sticking with Sam and Buck until the end of the line.”
“Don’t ever say that again!” Bucky snaps.
Winnie recoils hurt from his words and the silence grows.
She looks over when John begins pacing and talking to himself.
“Nope No, this is a bad plan.”
“It hasn’t been ten minutes. Just sit tight.”
“Don’t do that. Don’t patronize me.”
“He knows what he’s doing.”
“I’m going in.” John walks up to Bucky. He stops John.
“This is all real easy for you, isn’t it? All that serum runnin through your veins. Barnes, your partner needs backup in there.”
“Lemar.” Winnie nudges him and gestures to John,” Has he always been this intense?”
“He’s got a lot on his plate.”
“Lemar no bullshitting me, is John okay?”
“Yeah, he’ll be okay.”
“Care to make a wager?”
“Sure. what’s the bet?”
“If John snaps, you owe me, Bucky and Sam:Juicy Lucys, fries and malts once we’re stateside.”
“If he doesn’t, you owe us a steak dinner. The works.”
“Deal.” Winnie puts out her hand for Lemar.
“Deal.” Lemar shakes her hand.
“What about me?” Zemo asks.
“Malts aren’t for terrorists.” Winnie answers.
“Neither are steak dinners.”
“Karli Morgenthau, you’re under arrest.” John calls out.
“This is what that was.”
“No, wait.”
“Tricking me until help came.”
“We had enough time to talk.”
“Nazi”
“Why don’t you.”
Karli shoves John and the shield against the table.
Winnie helps John back up, he shoves off of her.
Bucky goes after Karli as does Lamar.
Sam helps Winnie up and the two run through trying to find Karli.
“Shit.”
“I lost her.”
“So did we, and John’s a dick.”
“This place is a maze.”
“Pretty smart move though. We need to find Karli before John or Zemo do.”
Zemo finds Karli and shoots at her following her through the pipe room. He shoots twice more. To avoid him, Karli vaults over a table, her pouch of the serum vials falling to the floor with her. The blue vials litter the floor. Karli starts to crawl towards it but Zemo shoots once more. She finds cover behind the table.
“Is this what I think it is.” Zemo asks. He picks one up.
“No no no.” Karli starts.
He throws it to the ground, the glass vial shattering. Zemo stomps on them. Karli runs out seeing that Zemo is busy. The shield flies out of the air and knocks him out.
Sam, Bucky and Winnie run in to see John.
“You found Zemo, good.” Winnie says.
“What did we miss?”
Back in Zemo’s home he rests on the couch with a wash cloth on his head.
“Anything new from Sharon.”
“No, just keep an eye on John.”
“Were you ever offered it?” Zemo asks Sam.
“What?”
“The serum.”
“No.”
“If you had been, hypothetically, that is, would you have taken it?”
“No.”
“No hesitation. That’s impressive.”
“Sam, you can’t hold out hope for Karli. No matter what you saw in her, she’s gone. And we cannot allow that she and her acolytes become yet another faction of gods amongst real people. Super soldiers cannot be allowed to exist.”
“Isn’t that how gods talk?”
“And if that’s how you feel, what about Bucky.”
“He never chose anything.” Winnie asks.
Sam takes Zemo’s silence for a chance to continue.
“Blood isn’t always the solution.”
Bucky comes back in.
“Somethings not right about Walker.”
“Clocked that a mile away. I made a bet with Lemar.”
“ What kind of bet?”
“I think John is unstable. He’s gonna snap at someone. And when he does we get cheeseburgers and malts.”
“You can’t make a bet like that. It’s wrong.”
“Lemar knows John better than I do. And he has faith in John. That should make us feel a little better.”
“What does he get if John doesn’t crack?”
“Him and John get a steak dinner.”
“Steak dinner vs cheese burgers, the classic American battle.” Zemo adds.
“Well get ready to eat a burger, Sam, I know a crazy when I see one. Because I am crazy.”
“Can’t argue with that.”
“Shouldn’t have given him the shield.”
“I didn’t give it.”
“Well Steve definitely didn't.”
“All right. That’s it. Let’s go. I’m now ordering you to turn him over.”
“Hey, slow your roll.”
“Shield or no shield, the only thing here you’re running is your mouth. Now I have Katli and you overstepped. He’s actually proven himself useful today. We’re going to need all hands on deck for whatever’s comin’ next.”
“How do you want the rest of this conversation to go, huh. Should I put down the shield, make it fair?”
“Malts here we come.” Winnie adds sending a smirk over to Lemar.
John puts down the shield and a woman dressed in crimson, and gold armor throws a spear.
“Woah.” Winnie looks from the woman, to Sam, to Bucky as if to ask if they saw that too.
More women in armor with spears come into the room.
“Are they the Dora Milaje?” Winnie asks Bucky.
He nods.
The lead woman speaks to Bucky in a language Winnie has never heard before. Even she knew that whatever they were here for wouldn’t end well for Zemo.
“Release him to us now.” The woman says.
“Hi, John Walker, Captain America.” John introduces himself. “Well let’s put down the pointy sticks and we can talk this though huh. “
“Now he wants peace.” Winnie mocks.
“Not the time.” Sam says shaking his head. “John, take it easy, You might want to fight Bucky before you tangle with the Dora Milaje.”
“They don’t have jurisdiction here.”
“The Dora Milaje have jurisdiction wherever the Dora Milaje find themselves to be.”
“Okay. Look I think we got off on the wrong foot.” John claps her on the shoulder.
The woman looks at John’s arm and then him. She hits him with a spear multiple times then kicks him away, hitting the spear in the wall and back to the ground. He uses the shield to deflect a spear aiming for him and continues fighting the women.
Zemo continues drinking his cocktail.
“We should do something.”
“Yeah.” Winnie pulls out a bag of popcorn from her backpack. She offers some to Sam. He takes a handful.
“Looking strong, John.”
“Bucky.” Sam warns.
“So the Dora Milaje is the Wakandan army?” Winnie asks the two guys as they watch the fight.
Bucky nods.
“The spears look beautifully made.”
“Ayo.” Bucky grabs the spear in the hands of one woman. “ Let’s talk about this.”
Sam and Bucky enter the struggle.
“ Guys!” Winnie yells.
“We’re a little busy!” Sam yells back to Winnie.
Winnie chases Zemo, but he gets the door and locks it.
“You’re a rat! You know that!” Winnie is banging on the door trying to break it.
Ayo taps Bucky’s arm in a few places and it falls off. She walks off towards where Zemo locked the door.
“He’s gone. Leave it.” She tells another warrior holding the shield.
“Did you know they could do that?” Sam asks.
“No.” Bucky puts back on his arm and rotates it. The vibranium shifts and hums as it moves back to place.
“You all right, man.” Lemar asks helping John up.
“They weren’t even super soldiers.” John gets up.
“I can’t believe he pulled an El Chapo.”
“I can, come on.”
“She said what? Hold on Hold on, I know. Listen pack an overnight bag and take the boys.”
“What happened?”
“Karli called Sarah. She threatened my nephews.” Sam turns back to his phone,”Okay. Go somewhere safe. Only pay in cash. All right? Let me know when you get there.”
“Damn.” Winnie’s expression grows serious. “ She can’t keep this up.”
“I know. I love you. I’ll never let anything happen to these boys.Okay, bye.”
“Karli wants to meet. She left a contact number. She said just me and Winnie.”
“Me?” Winnie asks. “ Why?”
“I didn’t ask.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“Karli!” Sam yells out.
Winnie walks with him, rocket boots and other weapons up her sleeves ready.
Bucky follows.
“You called my sister. That’s how we’re gonna play this.”
“I would never hurt her. I wanted to understand you better. I see you two didn’t come alone.”
“You have to end this now.”
“Karli there’s nothing good that can come from this. Just stop this from escalating. Just stop.” Winnie says.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You don’t have to hurt anyone.”
“Sam, you’re just a tool in the regimes. I want to destroy. You’re not hiding behind a shield. If I were to kill you it’d be meaningless. I was going to ask you to join me.And you, Winnie, you’re not a tool, you’re a free agent. You could join us. I saw the gadgets the first time we fought. Also you were the closest to downloading all of our mugshots before we started erasing our trail. We could use you.”
“I can’t do that Karli.” Winnie shakes her head.
“Hey Sam,” Sharon’s voice says through Sam’s gear. “ Looks like new Cap is moving. Looks like he found them or maybe they found him.”
“It’s Walker.”
Sam and Bucky jump down colliding with Karli.
“ I’ll send you the location. Go!”
Bucky runs off in search of John.
Winnie kicks on her rocket boots and takes a running leap off the building following Sam.
Sam comes in through the ceiling, Winnie follows through the large hole.
He and Winnie watch as John bends a metal pipe.
“What’d you do?
“They’ve got Lemar.”
Sam and Winnie follow John.
Two super soldiers drop down from the ceiling. One takes on Sam, the other John.
John tosses the shield and hits one in the back and Sam lets his wings take the action.
“What’s with all the knives?”
“Guns are hard to get in Europe. Knives are stylish.” Winnie shoots one in the leg.
Bucky runs in and catches a knife.
Sam now has two super soldiers on him.
Bucky punches one
“You’re welcome.”
An electrified whip hits the other one and knocks them out.
“Sup.” Winnie nods.
Karli, armed with a knife, sees her moment to kill John. She takes it and then is grappled by Lemar dropping her to the ground. They get up and Karli punches him into a pillar in the middle of the room.
John goes over to Lemar.
“Hey. Hey. Hey.” John pats his face. “Lemar. Lemar. Lemar.”
“Shit.” Winnie says softly.
The Flag smashers and Karli flee.
Sam, Bucky, Winnie run after Karlie.
John jumps out of a window and slams onto the street below.
“Where is she?!?” John yells running after the one of the flag smashers.
John knocks the man down beside cement stairs and hits him with the shield. People begin to watch.
“It wasn’t me.” The man pleads. “It wasn’t me!”
John lifts his shield and brings it down several times. Onlookers take videos and scream.
Winnie leans her head on Bucky’s shoulder closing her eyes, away from what just took place in broad daylight, in front of people.
“He snapped.” Winnie whispers with tears in her eyes.

Can I request a Steve one-shot, where he falls in love with Bucky's twin sister and vice versa? P.S. The reader gets taken by Hydra as well, and brainwashed into a lethal assassin.
“Steve...” a voice came from behind the captain. Bucky was stood hunched over, his hair pushed across his face. His stance was weaker, more frightened than he usually looked.
“Hey, Buck, is everything okay? You slept it longer than usual,” Steve asked, in a concerned manner.
“Um, no actually. I-er...” Bucky paused, unable to look Steve in the eye.
“You can tell me, Buck,” Steve carefully placed an arm on his shoulder, squeezing it lightly.
Bucky cleated his throat, glancing up at his friend timidly. “Well, I’m starting to recall more of my memories-”
“That’s great, Buck!” Steve interrupted. “I’m glad to hea-”
“Steve, that’s not a good thing. It’s not something to celebrate - just hear me out,” Bucky’s tone came out harsher than he meant. Steve nodded in acknowledgment, refraining from speaking another word. “I remember more about my time with Hydra,” Bucky continued, gulping, “my sister, Y/N, she was captured too. I only remember snippets of her but I know she was trained too - as an assassin. If I refused to comply they’d force me to watch her be beaten up or brain washed. Which makes me think she’s still there now.”
“Oh, Bucky,” Steve breathed, his heart pounding inside his chest. You were Bucky’s twin sister - you Steve and Bucky has grown up together on the streets of Brooklyn. During the war, you and Bucky had joined - and Steve soon after. You had worked as an undercover agent but had been reported captured shortly after Bucky had supposedly died. Steve had to accept both yours and your brother’s deaths but this news shocked every bone in his body.
Steve had always loved you. His feelings, after all these years, had never changed. Growing up, he had asked you out but you had always turned him down. Deep down you loved him in the same way he loved you but Bucky had always stopped you from expressing it. He forced you to keep your feelings to yourself and told you if you and Steve were ever to break up then things would never be the same between you all - at a young age, this was your worst nightmare.
“Are you sure you’re not just mixing up your distance past with your more recent one?” Steve asked, longing for this to not be true. Of course, he hoped you were alive but wished that you hadn’t been tortured like Bucky had for all these years.
“I know what I saw Steve!” Bucky grew angrier, utterly convinced he was right. Steve nodded silently, understanding his friends pain and anger. “How could I forget about her?! My own sister! I’m a monster...” he cried, letting his tears fall freely.
“Buck, don’t say that. You’re not a monster - it’s not your fault they brainwashed you and forced you to forget your past.”
“That’s not an excuse!” Bucky shouted, now sobbing quietly. “I left her there and I didn’t even realise.”
Steve brought Bucky to his side, embracing him tightly. “Don’t worry, Buck,” he assured him. “We’ll get her back. I promise you.”
—————————————————————
Bucky’s nerves were all over the place - he was never this anxious before a mission. He told himself that this was just like any other mission he’d been on. But he couldn’t escape the knowledge that it wasn’t true. He sat alone, beside the quinjet.
“Buck,” Steve called from the ship. “You ready, pal?”
Bucky couldn’t bring himself to look at his friend, his eyes fixed on the cold, hard floor before him.
Steve leaned on the metal pole that connected the floor of the ship to the ground. His muscles were tense, adrenaline already coasting through them. The muscles in his back twitched slightly; no matter how hard he tried to calm his nerves, it was useless.
Then, with a start, Bucky got up, pacing over to the ship. Steve stepped back to let the determined man through. They both settled on the ship, preparing for take off.
Accompanying the two super-soldiers was Natasha Romanoff and Sam Wilson - the two people they trusted the most. Steve felt that if they told Tony or anyone else about their goal in this mission they would be stopped - or worse, they might get you back safely but then might get arrested by government officials. They couldn’t risk that happening. And so the mission was kept a secret.
Months ago, Tony had tracked down the Hydra base where Bucky had been kept - the suspected place where you would be held. Tony had refused to give anyone else the location of the base after the accords took place but Natasha uncovered them. Nothing escaped Natasha’s knowledge.
As the team landed at the location, they devised a strategy plan: how they would enter, which areas they would cover - nothing they weren’t used to. They planned throughly, not leaving any gaps or possible faults. They couldn’t jeopardise this mission - Bucky and Steve would never be able to forgive themselves if they did.
However, entering the building without being caught was easier than Steve had thought. He assumed that the place would be heavily guarded but, to his surprise, it wasn’t. Natasha suggested that they lacked security to keep a low-profile. To hide in plane sight.
The team split up, covering each part of the building, across many empty floors. Steve wandered through the dark halls of the - what seemed to be - abandoned building, his memories of you circling his mind. These memories caused his focus to become skewered. He needed his mind clear but was utterly unable to allow it to be.
“Don’t worry, Stevie,” your past words echoed in his mind. “I’m sure you’ll eventually join the army...anyway you don’t have to be a soldier to prove your worth. I recognise your value even if others don’t.” Steve recalled that memory vividly - the first time he ever tried to sign up for the US Army. You had been there to comfort him when he was down. He still remembered the blue dress you were wearing. Your y/h/c hair tied in a neat bun. The smell of your calming perfume-
“Two agents are on my floor. I repeat: two agents on floor -1,” the voice of Natasha brought Steve away from his thoughts.
“Floor -1?! There’s a basement?” Sam came through Steve’s ear piece.
“I’m glad to see you did your homework on the place, Wilson. Next time pay more attention, okay?” Natasha mocked.
“Romanoff, do you need backup?” Steve questioned, making his way to the nearest staircase.
“Relax, Rogers. I’m a big girl - I can handle myself,” she mumbled, continued by some grunting and smacking sounds. “See?” she breathed, a couple of seconds later, “they’re no longer a problem. Moments later shouts in Russian sounded through Steve’s earpiece.
“Romanoff, what was that?” Steve demanded, now running for the exist to the staircase.
“Okay, now might be a good time to ask for backup,” she gave in, continuing with grunts and sounds of physical contact.
“I’m on my way too,” Bucky responded.
“Me too,” Sam agreed.
As the three men reached Natasha, they witnessed before them a pile of about 10 unconscious bodies that lay circling her.
“Right on time,” she sighed, catching her breath.
“At least they’re not a problem now,” Sam raised his eyebrows.
“These ones aren’t a problem but I heard them contacting others. We’ll have company soon enough,” Natasha pushed past the men and swung the door open to one of the staircases. “Come on, boys, we don’t have all day.” The men followed her, like helpless children.
As they made their way down the staircase, Bucky’s mind began to flash with thoughts, ideas, memories. “S-steve,” he breathed, supporting himself against a wall, in shock.
“What is it, Bucky?” Steve rushed to his friends side, concern in his eyes.
“I remember this staircase - I-I was retrained on it once. I-I attacked a bunch of agents and-oh god. She was there...we-we fought together...” his eyes searched across the stairs, searching for more memories. “I think I know where she is. Where she was always held. They never changed her holding place...maybe they still haven’t.”
Steve’s eyes changed from a look of concern to one of pride and relief. “Show us.”
Without another thought, Bucky charged down the stairs. The others followed, struggling to keep up with the sudden adrenaline pumped through the super-soldier. Finally, reaching the -4th floor, Bucky swung the entrance door open and paced down the hall to the suspected room. At this point, he didn’t care if anyone heard him - he only wished to see his sister.
He stopped, suddenly, at the door before him. Unable to make the next move. Steve approached him, staying close to his side. Without a word exchanged between them, Steve pressed down the door handle which opened into the daunting room. Both men stepped in, taking in their surroundings with caution. The room was empty. Not a soul in sight. The team stepped further into the room, unable to make a sound.
After what felt like an eternity, Bucky spoke, “where else would she be?” He sounded defeated, utterly hopeless.
Suddenly, a horrendous sound came from behind Sam as he was knocked unconscious against the cold, concrete floor. Natasha was the first to swerve around, her wrist blocking the contact of someone’s fist. Looking beyond the block, she saw an emotionless, brooding women standing before her.
“Y/N,” Steve and Bucky gasped together.
Your eyes snapped up at the sound of this. For a moment, there was a look of confusion in your features as though that name was familiar to you. Then, you shook the feeling away and forced your other fist towards Natasha’s head. Natasha ducked, sliding to sweep her feet under yours. However, her plan backfired as you dodged her by jumping over them, coming crashing down on top of Natasha’s body.
“Y/N, stop this!” Steve shouted, grabbing your body and pulling you from Natasha. You surprised him by grabbing his neck from behind you and flipping yourself from his grasp. Steve stood speechless, uncertain how to stop you. “Y/N,” Steve said, quietly. “You need to calm down - we just want to talk, okay? That’s all we came to do. I promise.”
Something inside you clicked. Every time you heard that name, your body tensed up and you stopped in your tracks. “W-what?” you spluttered, your left eye twitching.
“Y/N,” this time Bucky spoke, slowly stepping towards you. “It’s me, Bucky. I’m your brother, remember?” Your eyes went wide, blinking furiously. “You’re Y/N Barnes. You were born in Brooklyn, New York. This is Steve Rogers - you remember him? Us three were best friends but he was so much more. You loved him,” Bucky nodded, stepping further forward. Steve’s heart pounded at Bucky’s words. He never would have dreamed you had feelings for him.
“No,” you replied, shaking your head.
“It’s true, I promise. Except, Steve looks completely different than he used to. You probably remember him as a small skinny kid, huh?” Bucky’s voice was calm, he masked his desperation and nerves perfectly.
“No, no, no,” you repeated, unable to accept this truth.
“Y/N,” Steve began approaching you, dispute the potential violence you could commit. “Y/N, it’s me. I’ve missed you so much, doll.” Your mouth parted at his nickname for you. He had always called you that. Always. “Please,” tears began to form in his eyes, “please understand that it’s us. We’re not here to hurt you. We’re here to rescue you.” At this point, Steve was directly in front of you. You allowed him to reach you, a familiar feeling accepting his approach to you.
“S-steve?” you finally replied, stepping forward.
“Hey, doll,” he laughed, a tear rolling down his cheek. “You remember me?”
“Y-yes, I do,” tears were forming in your own eyes now. “B-Bucky?” you looked to your brother.
“Oh, Y/N!” Bucky gleamed, rushing over to your side and embracing you in a hug. You returned the gesture, memories beginning to floor back.
After Bucky let go of you, Steve places his arms around you. He brought you to his chest, clutching you tight. His lips forcefully kissed the top of your head as his warm tears ran down your forehead.
“I thought I’d lost you forever,” he mumbled. “I never got to tell you how much I love you.”
Your heart, after about 70 years, finally felt that familiar warmth in your chest. You had always loved Steve with your whole heart and soul. Knowing the feeling was mutual was what you had been searching for all these years.
“I love you so much Steve,” you mumbled into his chest, as he held you in his arms for the first time in decades.
