Oh it's not actually that deep!

I get bad migraines so I can't read and I don't watch a lot of movies & audiobooks don't do it for me, so I just have to make sure I have a few poems knocking about in my head to get through the Bad Days. (boredom is my enemy) I also listen to sports podcasts because they're low stakes, low intensity, often male (lower pitched) voices which means they are pretty good for killing time. The marriage between the two was mostly an accident.

I like doing this though, it's chill & people have been very nice about indulging me despite the fact that it is objectively insane.

Hiiii, I just wanted to let you know that I’m writing my own Aki-centric AU and I find your dedication toward writing so many stories about her to be very inspiring! Unfortunately I decided I had to wait to read your stuff until I’m done with mine, because I didn’t want to accidentally yank ideas from it. :(

Well hello! And thank you, that’s very sweet. I love Aki very much and the story ideas I had for her kinda ended up snowballing, haha. So I just kinda buckled down and decided to see the whole journey through.

I’m happy to hear you’re also intending to give Aki some attention, though! In my opinion, she deserves all the spotlight she can get. And awww, I’m lowkey sorry to hear that? Like, don’t get me wrong, I’m flattered that you want to read my stuff first, but I’d never want to inhibit a fellow fanfic author in their storytelling. And I really wouldn’t want to act like I’ve got a monopoly on Aki-centric stories—in fact, I’m pretty sure there are things about my stories that might not work for every Aki fan, either. Like I know that not everyone’s into faithshipping the way I am, and that having that mixed in with Aki’s character development might not be everyone’s cup of tea, or that not everyone might enjoy the worldbuilding I’ve added to the Arcadia Movement. So I’m absolutely all for people adding their own takes and writing whatever character progression they might wish Aki had had. I wouldn’t even mind people giving their own takes on ideas I’ve already used—granted, I’d appreciate if someone asked if they planned to lift an idea 1:1 from one of my stories first. But at the end of the day, we’re all here to have fun and get creative. It’s genuinely very considerate that you’re mindful enough not to want to copy my ideas, but please, no need to drive yourself crazy about it. I hope you have a lot of fun writing your own Aki fic (or fics). And at worst, if you ever did notice anything to be super similar, it wouldn’t take more than shooting me a message about it to clear it up and likely get the thumbs up to just write the same idea in your own way anyway.

If you really intend to wait, then, if it’s any consolation, I can tell you that there are, including my current WIP, only two “major” fics in my Aki arc left. (As in, fics that use original ideas and add my own elements to canon that weren’t there before; I do have more Aki story ideas than that, but the rest would either be slight rewrites of canon duels or just small things placed in entirely different spots on the timeline to fill in gaps.)

At any rate, I wish you the best of luck! (And I’m glad if you like my writing, thank you!)

The best piece of advice I ever got was not meant as advice, but as an edict. If I was going to threaten people as a joke, it had to be so far out of proportion with what happened that it would be obvious I was joking. This changed how I expressed frustration with others. It then changed how I expressed frustration with myself.

Not “I’m going to hit you” but “I am going to buy a tuna sub from the gas station and hide it under the seat of your car”

Not “I’m going to kill myself” but “I am going to walk into the desert and let the scarabs take me”

The other side then happened. When I mess something up, instead of saying it’s bad and perpetuating negative thoughts, swing hard the other way.

Not “this art is terrible” but “this shall be framed and mounted on the wall in my museum exhibition as testament to the suffering I had to overcome”

Have been doing this since high school. It was my drama teacher who asked me to please stop scaring the actors. The other half of the edict was that I had to say it in a polite tone, and end it with either please or thank you.

hbomberguy’s latest video on plagiarism has made me completely rethink literature and writing. I have never once so much as considered intentionally plagiarizing anyone or anything, but I think there’s something more that has come out of this: the names of the people who created the works Somerton (and others) ripped off.

Plagiarism isn’t only bad because it is lazy and disrespectful, it’s bad because it buries the truth. If you can’t find a source, the conversation is over. Somerton’s sources are fairly easy to find by simply searching his plagiarized lines, but that isn’t true in most cases. Most of the time, the line from statement to source is a lot less clear.

Today, I was writing a report on English Ivy, which is an invasive species here in the US. I wanted to know when it was introduced and I at last found a source claiming it was introduced to the Americas “as early as 1727” on a .net website that seems quite reputable (it has multiple major universities credited in its home page), but there is no citation for where this date came from. I dug deeper and found a pamphlet created by a city government in Virginia that made the same claim, only to discover the first source linked in their bibliography. Another website (a botanical garden’s page) gave the same date with the same source hyperlinked. Of course, I have classes to attend and things to do and probably not enough time to follow the lines back to where this 1727 date came from, but if I had not just watched this video, I wouldn’t have given that date a second thought.

Of course, it doesn’t matter in the long run exactly what year hedera helix was introduced to the Americas, but it makes you wonder how many facts have been so vaguely attributed that it becomes completely impossible to figure out where they originated (and further, whether or not they’re true at all).
