Going off of this post, which has so many good points: I think two other things are also happening with Stede, in addition to everything else, and they have to do with his understanding of what love is.

We know that Stede's fairly intellectual and often retreats into fantasies. But he also just reads a lot, and most of his experience and understanding of love would likely be filtered through what he has read. While, yes, there was gay porn in the 18th century, and Stede would likely know about Greek attitudes to sex between men, sodomy itself was illegal and very likely, as @teeny-tiny-revenge points out, never treated as part of love or romance, but as an act (we see this in Calico Jack’s discussion of buggery). So Stede is very unlikely to associate the act of gay sex as anything to do with love.

But Stede does know about the concept of love as transcendent and courtly. We know he reads Shakespeare and fairy tales; he’s likely to read Donne, Milton, and Pope, Greek epics, and medieval romances. The point being that love, in his worldview, would be something high and passionate, something almost not of this world, and even possibly disconnected from sex entirely—which would, for him, relate to his lack of sexual desire for his wife or for women generally. I think Stede's desire to marry for love is not really about sexual desire at all, because he's not quite aware that he can feel sexual desire for men and he knows he doesn't feel it for women. It's about finding the more transcendent, courtly love that he reads about.

When he meets Ed, Stede does develop feelings. They have an immediate kinship. But Stede has also never had a close friend. What he’s experiencing with Ed, initially, is not the high-flown emotions he’d associate with literary depictions of romantic love, but something simpler—he and Ed are friends, they like being around each other, they care for each other. When Ed leaves, Stede is jealous and devastated, and he's overjoyed when Ed comes back. But none of those feelings click as romantic love until Mary tells him what love really feels like.

The other element are the two times Stede and Ed kiss, or nearly do—first on the deck in the moonlight, and then on the beach. The kiss on deck is something that doesn’t actually happen, just nearly does, and we have no scene afterwards with either of them to further parse out their emotions. Certainly Ed and Stede see it as a memorable moment in their relationship later, after both are aware of their love for each other, but at the time it's a step not taken. This seems to be more of a “love that dare not speak its name” moment, that neither of them are yet willing or able to put a label on. However it’s of note that when Stede remembers it, he doesn’t remember the near kiss—he remembers putting the silk in Ed’s pocket. And that act is one that he would understand as deeply intimate, a chaste physical touch (and exchanged of a beloved object) that could be associated with courtly love.

The kiss on the beach is the start of Stede’s awakening to his sexuality. But again, there is a small move there between friendship and romantic love, and the kiss is not expressive of intense passions. What both Ed and Stede are able to articulate is simple happiness. One could even argue that neither of them are fully aware of the depth of their romantic and sexual feelings at that point—Ed because he’s felt sexual attraction but never really paired that with love, Stede because he’s never felt either.

So I don't think that Stede is fully aware of his sexuality as sexuality, not until Mary puts it into clearer terms for him—his love for Ed may be friendship, it may be more chaste, transcendent love, but he's not yet tied those feelings to the reality that he can desire Ed.

bops along to songs on the side most of the time but when she gets a solo she is FRONT !! and CENTRE !!

literally this girl- insane. whenever one of the other members is sick she’ll joke about filling in for them just because she’s talented enough to actually do it (except ning, cause that girl cannot play drums for the life of her, something about hand eye coordination in front of a drum kit fucks her up)

you’re one of her fans, always milling around the side of the stage to snatch up the set list when they finish 😭

one time she kisses the set list and you now have it tacked up on your wall, lipstick smooch for you to wake up to (you've tried kissing over it yourself, ya freak)

definitely teases you about that after she found out

anyway, jimin being jimin ends up chucking you her pick and some other personal items from her sets (see: water bottle, hair clip, ect.) but realises she’s thrown you one too many things and finds you after the set to ask for her lucky pick back

she sorta understands that you’re her biggest fan and ends up asking you back to the greenroom (literally just a glorified storage room) for a chat

you think she’s pulling a groupie x band member hanky panky thing on you, and ofc you’re down for the ride

turns out she seriously just wanted to talk??? (you gain [phone] respect for her)

keeps talking to you after performances cause shes seriously interested in the things you talk about

eventually just has the gall to ask you out on a date - “can we take this further?” or “are you doing anything after this?” type shit

loves going to the arcade with you to play ddr and table hockey, then takes you by other gigs on the way home - she especially likes jazz bars and drags aeri along with y’all to watch (aeri doesn’t mind being a 3rd wheel to you two)

she entertains groupies, but you both know that jimin only has room in her heart to love you

often you join in with her antics, teasing her fans and pulling pranks on them

whenever you pick her up from band practice she lets you play her bass, teaching you how to play your favourite songs (and all her simpler ones too)

really she’s just choosing the bass note of a chord and maybe a third or a fifth to play so it's super easy for you and you won’t get frustrated and quit

not to be absolutely biased but you love it when she gets little parts to sing - mostly its minjeong and ning singing with her and aeri pulling through with backup vocals when needed, but in some songs she has a couple lines of her own

always sings like she’s being held at gunpoint, raw emotion, full power, you have to beg her to ask for a song where she’s the main vocalist - apparently its in the works so you’re happy

she thinks you’re cute so she asks for your number before she leaves and you do NOT give it to her

she literally comes back weekly just to play annoying songs and ask you out

one time she kept playing the among us imposter theme whenever you walked by and you literally had to yank the guitar out of her hands and push her out of the store

by now you practically seethe in anger whenever she comes in (ning smile sparkles in response)

you would have banned her long ago, but you never work shifts with your manager so they don’t even see this bullshittery happening 

one week she doesn’t come, and you weirdly miss her presence, like who else is gonna make your shifts interesting?? surely not johnny in the back who smokes half his shift and is high asf the rest.

the next week she apologised for missing your shift, and shows you that her band has a gig coming up!!

she desperately wants you to come and see her playing an instrument she’s actually good at, so she drops a flier (or 20) on the counter as she leaves (after fucking up the solo in freebird, naturally)

for some reason you go?? it’s not like you have anything better to do that night, plus you’re always down to see and support local bands, you work in a music shop, duh

ngl you think it’s gonna be shit, you’ve never actually seen ning play drums, only shoddy guitar riffs, so you’re 110% confused when she’s not holding a guitar on stage and instead sits at the back with a drum kit surrounding her. 

and ning pulls out ALL the stops for you, twirling her sticks when she has the chance, adding in a couple half-time breakdowns and extra fills where there shouldn’t be, quite literally winking at you after a solo. 

let’s just say you’re entranced

this little shit who comes into your shop to annoy you with the most basic and overplayed guitar songs, is so hot when she’s behind a drum kit. 

when ning finds you after the concert, she asks for your number again and you finally give it to her

when you start dating, she gifts you a set of earplugs so you’re definitely completely and utterly safe from ear damage around her (you consider wearing them even when she’s not playing her drums)

since she’s gotta take her whole kit with her to some of her gigs, she asks you to help her transport it - your car is basically her personal hauler, toting both your gf and her kit from place to place

you don’t mind since its just more time you get to spend with her

teaches you basic drum patterns by letting you sit in her lap, her hands on yours, giggling in your ear whenever you mess up. 

none of her groupies ever catch her attention when she has you, she literally ignores everyone whenever you’re in the room, even the other members

they beg and plead for ning to count them in, it’s her job being the drummer and all, but she’s too busy trying to get you to give her a good luck kiss before the song starts 

goes out on double dates with rina and her gf, dragging you along to the arcade to win you a stuffie from a claw machine

when you stay overnight and she’s bugging to practise she makes sure to use her electric drum set so that you can sleep better, plugging in her headphones and making as little noise as possible (you still have trouble sleeping since she always gets in a zone and forgets being quiet but its the thought that counts right?)

has this cute little habit of using parts of your body as a kit when you’re cuddling and listening to music

basically just a hyperactive gf who LOOOOOOOOOVES you

note: i think the idea of ning playing the drums is fucking hilarious, especially with that one video of them trying to set up a kit with anderson paak, open the music schools!!!

A Grand(ish) Theory of What the Heck

I love the utterly unhinged, super detailed theories about what's going on in Good Omens, especially in season 2. I hope one or more of them turn out to be true, as some kind of glorious puzzle-box-hidden-code monstrosity. And also I think that there has to be a simpler explanation for things, for the people who are at least Somewhat Normal (tm) about this show. (... I assume such people do exist somewhere...) This is what I have been pondering recently.

The thing that started me thinking about this was this post, containing some promotional materials for season 2 that feature main characters with scenes in their heads. Like this:

Seeing this created a very similar situation in my own head, but with a nice shiny lightbulb.

All the weirdness: the car, the sideburns, the clock, the behavior of the folks of Soho, the vanishing storefront signs. The absence of God. I think this is all because everything we see is in their heads.

I don't mean it's made up. At least not entirely. Memory is already a plot point. Why not explore it on a deeper level? I've read theories emphasizing the minisodes' stories being retold by Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the whole season is like that.

You know that sort of conventional-wisdom-fact-concept that you can only dream faces of people you've seen before (or variations therein), because your brain can't make new faces up? So it just fills in what it thinks is close enough? I think that idea, applied to remembering or recollecting things, could explain so many things that are wonky in this show.

Wonky Things

Crowley parking in an impossible London location? He definitely remembers it was in London, so his brain just stuck some obvious London landmarks in there.

Awkward clattering happening when Crowley throws the stacks of books he's inexplicably carrying around the bookshop? He wouldn't actually throw Aziraphale's books! But he'd like to think he's cool and nonchalant enough to do that, and if he did it would definitely make Some Kind of Noise.

Jim walking toward the bookshop from somewhere mysterious? Maggie and Nina saw him first, and he came from that direction, so he must've walked all that way. They don't know about the elevator in the Donkey.

Aziraphale remembers tartan hills and the Loch Ness monster because he was having a jolly time driving through Scotland, so obviously the scenery must've been whimsical Scottish things.

Nina put the Honolulu roast sign up, so she remembers its presence, but perhaps the occult/ethereal visitors to her shop do not.

Maggie really did text Aziraphale about the rent, but a note through the mail slot is a much more dignified way for a scholarly angel to imagine he received a message.

On the Fallibility of Recall

This season is loaded with unrealistic inclusions. The colors are turned up to 11. Some of the scenes are more caricature than believable interaction. Remembering things never copies or reproduces them with what one might call high fidelity.

Scenes recalled by separate memories will inherently vary. One person's hefty jigger might be another person's dash. Who knows for sure where the sun was that day? You and I might recall an event having different lighting or a different color palette, sort of like viewing something with different lens filters.

According to Neil, Crowley is an unreliable narrator of the story of his Fall. He labels the variations in clock times as a continuity error in a show where Everything Is Meant, but he doesn't say whose continuity error it is. He insists that the Bentley is the same through the whole season; maybe it was the same, but remembered differently. Maybe this is part of why there's more CGI but it's harder to spot.

So What?

Is this all there is to it? I sure hope not. I like my Good Omens with enough layers to put to shame an onion wrapped in a cake and covered in a parfait.

Is this possibly the fancy footwork that's distracting from the real magic trick? I wouldn't put it past Our Gaiman. There are a lot of things one could hide in the narrative of unreliable memory.

Is this going to stop me from rewatching and repondering and remaking theories for the next couple years? Not even at gunpoint.

I know a lot of people find it boring how much Halsin talks about nature, and I do get it- it is repetitive. However, I also find that if you break some of his statements down into what he's implying, you end up with something a lot more interesting. (ESPECIALLY because a lot of these support the "Halsin is autistic" interpretation.)

Take, for example, Halsin talking about his place in the world, specifically relating to relationships:

Halsin: I still have hot blood in my veins. Nature gifted us our desires, and the means to act on them. But we muddied its beautiful simplicity with rules, social strictures... clothes. So, I am not bound to nature. I am unbound in nature.

Halsin: Relationship? Such terms belong to civilisation - a little unfamiliar to my lips. You know what we share is more fluid, more founded in the principles of nature.

Implications: Halsin finds society too complicated. He enjoys nature because its rules are simpler and more sensical; rather than social rules and structures that are beyond him (especially when you take into account the autistic Halsin interpretation), he feels comforted by nature, which is complex in a way that he understands.

There's also Halsin's friendship with Thaniel.

Halsin: I had a friend when I was young, long ago. He played with me in the forests where I grew up... but eventually, I realised no one else had heard of him. It was Thaniel, of course. Nature was my very first friend. I get older, but he hasn't changed a day. I knew then that I had to be more than a companion to him. I had to be a protector.

Implications: Nature, by being Halsin's first friend, has always been what Halsin is comforted by. It has been a steady and comforting presence for him, something he can rely in, in contrast to other people who are unpredictable. Nature is consistent and comforting for him.

Halsin, infamously, is not happy in the city of Baldur's Gate.

Halsin: Too much noise, too many lanterns kept burning... nature's rhythm is ignored here.

Implications: Halsin is overstimulated easily by excessive noise and other sensory inputs. Nature provides him somewhere quiet.

Halsin: I wish... I wish there was a better way. I wish everyone could see the sun, have a full belly, and know nature as a friend. There is a balance that is yet to be found.

Implications: Again, Halsin sees nature- not just Thaniel, but all of nature- as a friend. A source of comfort and companionship.

Halsin: I think on [politics and high art] also. But nothing matches the splendour of an ancient tree.

Implications: Halsin loves the beauty of the natural world as much as anything else. Rather than art or music (which he can appreciate), what he prefers is something that grew rather than being made.

Halsin: I am... less anxious to find myself in a city. So removed from nature's power - I do not know how I will fare.

Implications: Not only does Halsin prefer not to be in the city, but he is actually, to some extent, frightened of it (likely due to how overstimulating it is for him), in contrast with his feeling of being right at home in nature.

There's other things to note as well. If a Dark Urge player embraces Bhaal and then tells Halsin to bow, Halsin has this to say:

Halsin: Nature bows to none. It will fight on and survive, no matter what madness your god has inspired you to undertake.

Implications: Halsin views nature as strength, and admires that very much. He draws a lot of his tougher qualities from this aspect of the natural world.

Or a line where Wyll gently points out that he talks about nature a lot:

Halsin: When you care about something deeply enough, it consumes every thought and word.

Implications: Halsin isn't thinking of little else besides nature because he's "boring"; it's because it's important to him. (A special interest, one might say.) And when something is deeply important to a person, they think of everything else in relation to that thing; think of a sports fan who constantly uses sports metaphors to understand the world around them.

There's another party banter with Wyll that is telling when combined with what he has to say about the city, too.

Halsin: It is most unfair to pour such scorn on rats - they have their place in nature, same as you or I. 

Halsin: I thought cities were supposed to welcome folk of all walks of life. Clearly I was mistaken.

Implications: Halsin feels everyone has a place in the natural world, yet that the city shuns those it deems different. As someone who has struggled greatly with fitting in/finding a place he "belongs", Halsin feels more sympathetic to nature, where all living things belong, than anywhere else.

I think that when you break up Halsin's love of nature into all the little things it implies, it paints a much more interesting picture of him, personally. It also supports the "Halsin is autistic" interpretation, which makes him even MORE interesting.

They're taking you on a walk, wherever you want to go

Cracks up when (acting on dog instincts) you pee on a nice patch of grass and immediately afterwards give him the most embarrassed look because you did it without thinking

Faust thinks it's fantastic. She's plopping herself on your back, and the chase the two of you lead Asra on through the crowded marketplace on the way to Selasi's booth is legendary

After you turn back, they keep commenting on what your ears/tail would be doing while you talk

This is all to cover for the fact that she's not very familiar with the care and keeping of dogs. She doesn't know what dogs need or how to provide it and she hates to admit it

She's terrified of losing track of you in the hustle and bustle of the Palace or of you getting crushed behind a heavy door, so she's carrying you down to the kitchens wrapped in silk and satin

She ends up taking most of her meetings out in the Gardens, where you're free to scamper and sniff and occasionally attempt to weigh in on state affairs (with limited success)

So, so very relieved when you turn back to normal

When he saw you, he wasn't surprised, just disappointed

Never before have you been so deeply grateful to Pepi's retained ability to speak. It saves you and Portia so much trouble and panic

Portia, thankfully, is the type of person who gets told the words "unexpected magic" and somehow hears "cool adventure time"

But first, daily tasks. She can put off work, but she can't sit still, so you're going to help her in the garden

That's right! She points at a spot, and you dig!

What follows is one of the most enjoyable mornings of your life. Dirt flies everywhere, Portia plants three new rows of carrots, and Pepi naps on the roof of the nearby shed

The bath afterwards is ... less enjoyable. The full-body scrub you get is delightful, but shivering under the weight of wet fur is not

You have never been scritched behind the ears like this and you never will again. You also doubt it would feel nearly as good in a human body, but why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Getting thoroughly brushed is Not Fun

Portia does go out of her way to find you a meal that is dog-safe and still appealing to human tastebuds, though, and she may or may not have tried eating without her hands to see what it's like

Lucio

He doesn't know what happened. He doesn't know until the end of the day when you poof back

What he does know is that right after you disappeared and he started to really panic, a perfectly adorable puppy appeared to keep him and Mercedes and Melchior company

He'll adopt you for the day while he looks for you

Mercedes and Melchior, thankfully, are quick to catch on to what happened and do a marvelous (if rambunctious) job of making sure you only get the best treatment

And oh, what amazing treatment it is. Lucio knows dogs like he knows the back of his hand

The ear scritches? Heavenly. The belly rubs? Mind blowing. Those suddenly appealing treats he hides in his pockets? Incredible

He can take one look at you and know exactly what your puppy body needs, in between his worried shrieks of your name

Mercedes and Melchior are eager to introduce you to the delights of being a dog. You learn how to fetch, chase, sniff, howl, play fight, chew shoes, and run off with Lucio's lunch!

Lucio will ask if you liked his natural musk when you switch back

Non-Red vs Blue fans guess the fake fact: results!

Alright time to finally review the results! Correct answer is at the bottom of this post for those not interested in all of the results and explanations!

So the most highly voted option at 23% was Elijah Wood which I’m sorry to say is incorrect! Elijah Wood was a voice actor in the series. He played the role of Sigma! What this big name actor is doing in a random web series I have no idea but it’s still one of the wildest things to me.

Now the aspirin overdose comes in with 17.3% and got mentioned a lot in the notes and it is also incorrect. However I will admit to some poor wording on my part because it was actually an allergic reaction not an overdose. That’s a genuine oopsies on my part 😅

Florida sinking into the ocean gets a 10.1% and is also incorrect! The state of Florida does in fact sink into the ocean and it’s implied this was to cover up the disappearance of Agent Florida (who is also the guy who dies from the aspirin)

The gay guy, who’s name is Donut btw, becoming Jesus comes in with 8.3% and is in fact very real. He even walks on water. It was wild and tbh I barely remember it cause it’s from a season I dislike but it was too wild not to include.

With 7.2% I can say for sure that the giant killer robot is indeed dressed up in cute hats! Specifically a sombrero! Also the robots name is Freckles.

CPR for a bullet wound in the head gets 6.7% and is in fact considered effective medical care. Now I will say this later gets retconned and it turns out the guy didn’t actually get shot in the head the bullet just grazed him and his armor locked up making them all think he was dying- hence the choice of word being considered. The characters fully believe it but the CPR did not actually save him cause he wasn’t even hurt to begin with.

The crazy love triangle comes in with 4.7% and is also very canon and is exactly as it’s said. There’s literally just this insane love triangle for like two seasons- honestly the only love triangle plot I ever enjoyed.

With a solid 4% I can say that there is in fact canon mpreg! Hurray? Idk man this one’s exactly as it sounds. Dude got knocked up by an alien.

In last place with 2.5% of votes is the main character dying repeatedly. This is also incorrect. First off this guy is named Church which very funny on its own. Secondly it’s actually one of the first running jokes in the series how much this dude dies. Until it’s not a joke 🫠 also a few people pointed out RvB doesn’t have a main character and while I agree I felt it was simpler just to call Church the main character for this poll since it’s designed for people who haven’t seen RvB and I would argue that the majority of the narrative centers around Church even when he’s not there.

And now for the correct answer, coming in at third place with 16.1% is Caboose is god!

Now I will fully confess to being sneaky with this one. This is actually a joke made within the series but it is not true at all. Caboose is not actually god and the platypus is just that fucked up. I knew nothing I could come up with would be able to match the absurdity of this series so I decided to twist a few words so that way everything seemed equally fucked up.

the self-fulfilling prophecy and the power of the spoken word

hellour again! i’m free these days, so i’d thought i’d make another long post; this time about the self-fulfilling prophecy and how Florence Scovel Shinn writes about a similar concept in her book The Game of Life and How to Play it. specifically, in the third chapter.

i really like Scovel Shinn’s works, especially because she was one of the pioneers of the New Thought school at the time, even before Neville. it’s clear that she was a very wise metaphysical author, and more people should give her some credit!

i love my major, and i love manifestation. so any chance i have to correlate both is one i will take!

remember the academic book i got this information from is Social Psychology 11th Edition authored by Kassin, Fein and, H.R. Markus. i’ll try to condense the information to make it less convoluted and understandable.

what is the self-fulfilling prophecy?

according to sociologist Robert Merton, the self-fulfilling prophecy is a process by which one’s expectation about someone will eventually lead to that person behaving in ways that confirm those expectations. in other words, the perceiver's (person who takes note of another) expectation can actually lead to its own fulfillment, a self fulfilling prophecy.

this hypothesis actually lay dormant until Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson, published the results of their research in a book titled Pygmalion in the Classroom.

what did this study consist of? well, these researchers noticed that teachers had higher expectations for students who performed better in the classroom and they wondered whether these expectations influenced student performance rather than the other way around.

to address the question, they told teachers in a San Francisco elementary school that certain pupils were on the verge of an intellectual growth spurt. the results of an IQ test were cited, but in fact, the pupils had been randomly selected. eight months later, when real tests were administered, the "late bloomers" exhibited an increase in their IQ scores compared with children assigned to a control group. they were also evaluated more favorably by their classroom teachers (Kassin 144).

why should we be careful about what we say?

we can transform our expectations of others into reality using a three-step process:

- first, a perceiver forms an impression of a target person, which may be based on interactions with the target or on other information.

- second, the perceiver behaves in a manner that is consistent with that first impression.

- third, the target person unwittingly adjusts his or her behavior to the perceiver's actions. The net result is behavioral confirmation of the first impression.

in simpler terms, what we think is what we project onto others. that process is called the confirmation bias. this is nothing more than the perceiver asking the target person questions that confirm their beliefs. for example, if we assume that a person is in a varsity team because of the jacket they’re wearing, we will ask them things that either confirm or deny that assumption. small things like these that we do unconsciously:

“are you on the basketball team?”

“do you go to blank university?”

we can also apply this to ourselves:

Florence Scovel Shinn, The Game of Life and How to Play It

chapter III, The Power of the Word

“By thy words shalt be justified, and by thy words shalt be condemned.”

what does Scovel Shinn say about the spoken word?

in her first book The Game of Life and How to Play It, she mentions a saying that reads: “man only dares use his words for three purposes: to heal, bless or prosper.” she also mentions that what man says of others will be said of him, and what he wishes for another, he is wishing for himself (Scovel 24).

“Curses, like chickens, come home to roost.”

what does this mean? well, like we saw in the bit about the self-fulfilling prophecy, what we say about others is what we attract for ourselves. for example, if we wish ill on—say—another tumblr user, we are sure to receive it as well. on the other hand, if we are kind to one another and support our journeys with manifestation, we will be able to reach our own success.

edward art mentions this too. but he calls it something more simple. love.

Scovel Shinn mentions in this chapter that when the subconscious is flooded with good things, or words in this case, the superconscious (God or imagination) and man are one.

“It is safe to say that all sickness and happiness come from the violation of the Law of Love.”

in this story she mentions an actress with a terrible skin disease:

as we can see in this story, any problems in the outside world indicate a deeper issue in the mind.

“As the within, so the without.”

why do i say that Florence Scovel Shinn’s beliefs coincide with the self-fulfilling prophecy?

we know that the self fulfilling prophecy implies that the way we perceive others is the way they will reflect on the outside. this is what the good-will Scovel Shinn mentions is about.

"But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which spitefully use you and persecute you."

conclusion

sometimes we get jealous of others' journeys. we read a success story and wonder “what am i doing wrong? maybe if i do what this person did i will manifest all my desires.” but remember we’re all different. what works for another might not work for us, and that’s okay :)

the beauty about spirituality is that we all have our own paths to follow, each with their unique experiences. trying out techniques you don’t like because you saw them in a “this is the fastest way to manifest” video will not fulfill you. and what doesn’t fulfill you will only make you give up.

i’ve seen this thrown around loablr and shiftblr, but i’ll reiterate in this post. please don’t police others on their journey. the only thing that will do is set you back.

next time you see a success story around the community, be happy for them! if anything, it’s a great thing to see on your dash because it's proof that the law always works in your favor. every time. so let’s wish each other well, practice gratitude, and focus on ourselves!

i think that eren and mikasa’s ‘ackerbond’ dynamic is an exact mirror of, and the more immature version of eruri, but it is not more unhealthy at its core.

arguably the main theme aot examines is what it means to be a slave and what it means to be in love, and straddling that line. for instance: eren went out of his way for mikasa to become independent and to keep from having to protect him. whether that was for mikasa’s freedom, or to preserve his pride and freedom is up to interpretation - and equally likely, when you don’t understand their bond. is mikasa choosing to protect eren anyway slave behavior or the behavior of someone in love?

mutually, levi continues to trust in and believe in erwin after he learns erwin leads the survey corps for selfish reasons, prioritizing freedom/the world outside/the debt he feels he owes to his father over others’ lives. is levi concluding, “it is what it is; i’ll still help you” the behavior of a slave or the behavior of someone in love?

here is where the immature vs mature distinction comes.

for eren and mikasa it’s simpler; mikasa promised carla she and eren would stay alive, they knew each other as kids through a traumatizing event, and at the end of the day mikasa wants to be by eren’s side with them both alive.

but naturally as two adult men, particularly with levi in particular maturing into an “adult” when he was still a child, their relationship is more mature. trust between two children is unashamed and even inherent, but in the first place levi was determined to kill erwin, and erwin saw levi as an object to further his goals. eruri’s bond of mutual trust is not “healthier” than eremika’s because it was more challenging to have happen, but it is more mature.

the one true marker of immaturity between the ackermans is their willingness to free their respective halves from the dream they were enslaved to. levi came to that decision much much much much “easier” than mikasa would; even during the battle of heaven and earth, annie tells her to focus on something else until eremika’s relationship climaxes like eruri’s did with their final conversation.

…this is more up to opinion, but eren’s actions ****towards mikasa**** was no more cruel than erwin was towards levi, but eren was much more immature at handling the conflict between them. erwin wouldn’t recognize levi’s devotion as the pure, unadulterated force it was; the greatest insult of all perhaps being the remark erwin made in his head that everything levi has done is a result of erwin having tricked him. on the other hand, eren would lie to mikasa in a final resort to push her away (note the trend) by telling her he had always hated her.

eruri don’t have this trend; they’ve always had the “mutual bond of equal trust”. it’s the world’s cruelty, creating a devil out of erwin, fueling his guilt, that would sew their entire personal conflict. for eren, it’s ingrained in him - to be “free” in every positive and every negative meaning, including being stubborn, and including running away to live with mikasa.

so again, eremika’s dynamic is technically more immature/simple, but not any more unhealthy. if you want to pick and choose, then technically their lifelong bond is better than eruri’s, but in fact their individual circumstances and differences create a respective relationship that’s just as secure and intense. immature, “innocent”, but not unhealthier.

levi and mikasa love their person because of who they are, not what they do, no matter what. is that slavery or love? you decide.

Author's Notes: Do you know I was just thinking about doing headcanons for this champion?!

Just when I returned from my studies (And from uploading the previous post), I came up with a character to make Yandere. I guess the universe sent me a sign juju.

Chances of your loved ones being killed.

Well, this type of Yandere is simpler. Like Raiden, he will not kill unless it threatens his life or the life of his loved one.

We are told a phrase in the comic that, for me, greatly influences understanding the character (I clarify that they are not the exact words but rather the ones I remember) “Master Kusho sat me in front of a tree with cobwebs. The beetles that remained there could escape, due to their structure, unlike the moths, which suffered from the web until the spider came and devoured them. (...), then the teacher asked me 'How many moths did you save during the time you saw the web?' 'None' I answered, because I had killed the spider from the first day."

This phrase makes it clear to us that he will not attack or harm unless necessary.

(I know that the phrase from the comic has nothing to do with here, but I wanted to add it because I really liked what they wanted to capture with that phrase)

First impressions

You met Zed when he was a small farmer; You were a student of Kusho, your parents sending you there because they had been friends with the man for a long time. And, due to the constant trips you made with others, you were always intrigued by the fact that he was white-haired, since you were not used to seeing people with that hair color.

Sometimes you watched him from afar when you traveled with Shen, he used to joke about you going up to him one day and asking him to marry you, child jokes, you know?

It's not until Shen fights him that you notice something in his gaze, something in his eyes that makes you feel a connection with him; determination. Even when he fell again and again, whenever you noticed that glow you felt like he was different, like you had found a jewel in the desert.

When he was accepted by Kusho, you were the first to welcome him as a friend; You talked to him when he was resting due to the injuries he sustained after the confrontation with Shen, and although he barely responded to you, you assumed that you were getting along well.

He barely managed to recover, you accompanied him in his initial training; Kusho always assigned you to guide the beginners, since you were quite friendly and patient with other people, and your age made them gain more trust in you.

Together with Shen, they quickly became best friends, the three of them always together. Even though you were not particularly good at both physical and theoretical training, you always tried to stay average.

Falling in love

When they traveled in search of Jhin, Kusho decided to take you along with the two of them; It was not because of your talent or your incredible intelligence (Which was not exceptional in you), but because you were going to be a great emotional support for the two boys you accompanied.

Your parents, even though they flatly refused, ended up giving in to you going, this was thanks to the manipulation that Kusho exercised over them, since you would be indispensable in this mission.

The name of the “golden dragon” always sounded strange to you, especially when he saw firsthand the death and blood that had been spilled on the ground because of him.

You felt nauseous at the sight of dead bodies, or people suffering due to the traumas Jhin had left them with. Both the anger and hatred that was born in your soul at just hearing the golden dragon's nickname grew like a tree spreading its branches during spring.

You saw how Zed suffered for damaged people, how his mind was subjected to incessant agony as he struggled between the life and death of people other than him. You were the first to go and console him and give him the word that he was doing things right, that he was doing his best to save the lives of innocent people.

You tried to support Shen as well, but he was a little less susceptible to your words, since he rarely showed as much emotion as Zed did with you.

(Yes, I know that Zed has another name instead of this one, but I forgot it when I wrote it, I'll write it better later)

Your unconditional support for him along with your important help in catching Jhin ended up causing a certain crush on you.

Even when he claimed to love a woman, you always crossed his mind, as if he had clung to you in some way.

Beginning of Yanderism

The moment you noticed that the great demon misnamed golden dragon was nothing more than a man, you uselessly thought that you could face him alone. Your stubbornness ended up putting you in such danger that it put you between life and death. And neither of your two best friends could handle the fact that you were in danger.

They barely managed when you recovered, you had to be taken to the emergency room, the idea that you were going to die because of a man crazy enough to harm you and make you suffer for his pure amusement caused Zed's contempt for Jhin to increase drastically.

When Jhin was caught, Zed wished to kill him, but when he was denied that fact, he erupted in a rage worse than what appears in canon.

At that time, a blade passed close to Jhin's face, visibly damaging his mask, at the same time that your best friend longed to damage him and kill him once and for all.

No one would hurt his best friend, not now knowing that he was in love with (name).

First murder or Yandere act

Zed stayed by your side throughout your stay at the medic, since his fear of your death was something that remained in his mind for days on end.

When you managed to recover, the worst happened; the Noxian invasion. You were too weak to fight, so you could only watch from afar as Zed and Shen fought for their nation.

They both visited you regularly, but Zed more regularly than Shen. Him being particularly protective of you, but now with tiny things.

He insisted that you not go out, that you not trust certain people, saying that he could take care of you, etc..., basically without letting you do things on your own.

Even when you tried to stop these insistences, you eventually gave in because you thought he was just doing it as an innocent act of affection between friends.

You thought that when the war was over, these attitudes would stop.

Relationship or kidnapping

He ends up abandoning the Kinkou, mostly because of the war. You stop seeing him for a while, and when you see him again, it was when they had already told you what he had done.

At first you refused to believe that he would be capable of doing something like that, since he was someone with a good heart, someone incapable of seeking evil. It's a shame they put a contrary idea in your head.

You ended up hating him, the knowledge that he had killed someone as important as Kusho had damaged your psyche.

It wasn't until he saw you again that he noticed that he was late, too late to be able to talk to you.

You yelled at him, you said a lot of things that you had suppressed deep in your heart since you found out about his actions, and although he tried to explain the truth to you, you refused to listen to him.

Even since he abandoned the Kinkou, he never stopped thinking about you. Never on those days when he wasn't with you did he stop thinking about you, who you were and what you meant to him.

He left after the argument, waiting for you to calm down so he could talk to you peacefully.

But Jhin was following him, he was precisely looking to reach that person.

And he took you away from him, he took you to be part of a play against your will.

And that finally ended up unleashing that more twisted side in the white-haired man's mind. Even though he himself was desperate to stop Jhin, he was even more desperate at the thought of him bringing you to the brink of death once again.

As soon as they managed to catch Jhin, Zed went to look for you, finding you alive. Let's say you were a little hurt, but you were alive.

And he decided... to take drastic measures, if you understand correctly.

In case of kidnapping, where would he take you?

To the temple, obviously.

He exclusively takes you to a part far away from his students, mostly because he doesn't completely trust them.

Coexistence.

Very strict, unlike others he does implement the punishment system; More than anything soft hits or threats, he usually denies privileges such as going out or socializing with other members of your environment due to your disobedience or lack of respect towards him.

Marriage and family

He is not very comfortable with marriage, however, if you agree, there can be at least engagement rings between the two of you.

If it can, children?

I assume he'll agree, but that's a half-assumption.

At most 1 child or 2.

Bad ending

You managed to escape, for some reason, you had managed to escape from where he was holding you prisoner. And when he finds out, he loses his mind.

He searches for you in the heavens and lands of all of Ionia if necessary, and when he does, he doesn't react well at all.

He drags you back to the temple, he doesn't care if Shen or all of Ionia tries to stop him, he will have you back in his arms.

When he arrives at the temple, he ends up making an extremely drastic decision; he breaks the bones in your legs, specifically, your knees.

No matter if you cry or beg, he won't let you escape again.

From now on, your only remaining option is to accept your destiny and... love him.

Reasons to be a Yandere

-The comic tell us that he is quite emotionally unstable, especially after the Noxian invasion.

-The shadows, his voices try to tell him that he has to keep safe the only thing that he considers precious, the only thing that he feels gives stability to his life.

-I have the idea that after the first time they caught Jhin, he is left with consequences, some especially strong ones that damage his mind as the days go by.

Additional data.

-Actually, it was Kusho who told Jhin your whereabouts, who to be sure followed Zed to where you were.

-Kayn has deep respect for you; You are the most important person for his teacher, so we can say that he contributes a lot to not letting you go out.

-After your kidnapping, Shen constantly thinks about your condition, knowing that you could be in danger.

-Zed sometimes thinks about the “mistake” he made by not being able to save you from Jhin the first time he took you, since he constantly blames himself for the damage you suffered that day.

yuma is a unicorn, mostly because mystery labyrinths require him to be able to hold a sword and talk at the same time. in addition to his memories, he lost his cutie mark in the pact, so everyone who sees him is like "damn you're an amnesiac AND a blank flank? pick a struggle". he doesn't have any accessories by default, but he probably gets a little hat in the rain + his cape in the mystery labyrinth. he was the first pony i drew, so his face looks a little janky. i struggled with drawing the ponies from any angle other than a perfect sideview, and the snouts/mouths were the hardest parts by far. the front view i did for yuma was a bit easier than the 3/4 view i did for most of the cast, but it was still tougher than i expected. pony artists who mimic the style of the show have all of my respect.

shinigami's spirit form was changed a little bit, although it was already so abstracted compared to a real human that i didn't feel i needed to change much in order to make her fit into the pony universe. i just swapped her horns out for wings and gave her a horn. i also removed her thumbs and made her colors closer to her human (er, pony) form. she's no longer a "death god" in the traditional sense, now being the "princess of death" in the same way twilight is the princess of friendship or cadence is the princess of love. she was sealed away because she was shit at her job (just killed a fuckton of people for no reason) but anypony who stumbled across the book she was sealed in can make a contract w her just like in rain code canon. obvi this is a little dark for the actual mlp universe, they wouldn't be putting a trigger-happy murder princess in their rated y cartoon, but this is the same fanbase that made fuckin. cupcakes and rainbow factory and a whole slew of others that make the main characters of mlp infinitely more fucked up than canon shinigami ever was. so i feel like we can have a little suspension of disbelief here.

shinigami's true form is an alicorn, obvi. she's a god princess, she's gonna be an alicorn. i tried to refrain from giving the characters too many accessories to better mimic the simpler mane 6 designs, but shinigami looked so naked with just the crown. so she also got her flower and little necklace. i didn't even attempt to put her hair in braids, since drawing her face at that angle was such a challenge already. upon posting this, i also realize i forgot to give her a tail. just imagine any tail you want on her. pin the tail on the shinigami. her cutie mark has the same dark void effect as nightmare moon's, although i can't remember if luna also has it as well. regardless, it's a visual tie-in to nightmare moon, who has a similar "princess banished to an inanimate object" thing going on. the actual cutie mark itself is two bones, representing death in a cutesy cartoony fashion. i was gonna do a skull and crossbones but then i realized. no one knows what a human skull looks like. there's no people. and i am NOT about to draw a fucking horse skull. so, bones it is.

yakou is probably the one i'm proudest of! i feel like i really captured the essence of the background pony in him. i feel like i could see him hanging out with lyra heartstrings and dr. whooves and i wouldn't bat an eyelash. his hair is a little longer than in the original design but i think it looks cute so it's fine. his cutie mark is an umbrella because his calling as a detective leads him to protect others like an umbrella protects you from the rain, plus kanai ward has its whole Thing. and he can be kind of a gloomy person at times, very pessimistic. he's an earth pony because he's just a normal guy, no forte in canon and stuff like that.

makoto was probably the trickiest to actually design. the element of mystery is super important in the original character design, but he was able to still have some skin exposed since almost all of the character designs in that game have a skintone of "homestuck white". in mlp, where coat colors can be any color of the rainbow (and the colors outside of the rainbow), makoto would lose that element of mystery. so, while i generally try to avoid putting the ponies in clothes, makoto kind of needed them. he's got his full suit and a set of gloves and white shoes for his hooves. instead of being a sort of "paper plate" mask, he's got a rubber halloween mask that extends past his neck instead. don't ask how the mane comes out of the mask. we don't ask how canon makoto's mask stays on with no straps, so don't ask about this one. the mask goes over his horn, so it blocks out most powerful magic, but basic spells like levitation are still possible with a bit of effort. the pants of his suit hide his cutie mark, and when asked about what it is, he gives a different answer each time.

kurumi isn't a super complicated or in-depth design. just a cute lil earth pony with a cutie mark of a speech bubble, since she does a lot of information gathering via talking to others. in hindsight, i should've given her freckles in the same color as her body outline. imagine she has freckles please. thank you.

fubuki is the design where i actually got the courage to attempt a braid. no idea if it looks good, i didn't use a reference and my hair is too short to braid it myself. i wanted an earth pony in the core group of nda members, and i was sort of torn between her and desuhiko. however, i'm a personal believer in the "all ponies can use magic on some level" theory, and that theory posits that earth ponies have a tendency to be able to use the intrinsic magic of their planet in subtle ways. applejack can enhance her physical strength without really doing anything consciously, and most importantly, pinkie pie can bend the laws of reality for The Bit. i think time travel is kinda like bending the laws of reality for The Bit. plus, desuhiko's disguise ability is kinda like an illusion, which feels like more of a unicorn ability. her cutie mark is a clock. because. uh. you know.

desuhiko is a unicorn for reasons i mentioned in fubuki's notes. his backpack is worn like a saddle, but he can still use it to disguise himself like in rain code canon. his cutie mark is the bag with a star on it, hinting that there's a superstar (him) in the bag. not much to say about him other than that.

vivia is a pegasus. since his forte allows him to fly, it makes sense for him to be able to fly in his base form as well - he'd get used to the flight powers inherent to his ability a lot quicker if he could already do it. he's definitely more of a fluttershy than a rainbow dash in terms of how he uses his ability to fly. he prefers to walk, but if his legs get tired, he'll switch to flying for a little bit. but then both his legs and his wings get tired and he takes a little nap. that's what the pose is meant to be, altho it does look a bit like he's flying. his cutie mark is a disappearing flash shape, as his spirit form is invisible and he tends to disappear into the background in general. someone in the rain coat server told me he looks like stoney pony and i haven't been able to get that out of my mind.

halara was the last pony i drew, because i love them and wanted to get as much pony-drawing experience as i could before turning them into an equine. can't have my pookie bear looking like shit! they are also a pegasus, but not for forte reasons like vivia. rather, they just do impressive feats of athleticism on the reg, and i feel like they would be a great flyer as a result. imagine the scene where yuma calls for help while being detained by seth and the peacekeepers. a blue and purple bursts onto the scene from the fucking clouds and halara is divebombing the peacekeepers. that'd be sick as fuck. their cutie mark is an eye, because postcognition is all about sight.

but that's the challenge. learning how to love small, imperfect things. it's not about writing. it's about revising.

here's another analogy:

visualize yourself in a factory. this factory has a number of machines, and each one helps take a raw material and turn it into a finished product. you have to run all the machines. you know in theory how to create the product; it's a product you use so frequently that you're intimately familiar with it. and you want to make a big, intricate, beautiful version of this product, just like the kind you buy. the problem is that when you walk inside the factory, all the lights are off. you don't know how big the space is or how many machines there are.

you stumble around and find the first light switch. you approach the first machine. you have the raw material in your hand and you put it into the machine and turn the machine on. you want this thing to be enormous, so you shove a whole lot of the raw material into it. it takes forever, and the machine doesn't do a great job. like the first batch of pancakes, you have to throw it out. so you try it again and maybe this time the machine more or less does its job.

before you can find the next machine, you have to find the light switch. it takes a while, and you get tired quickly from carrying this huge amount of not-quite-raw material around, but you do and you put the material from the first machine into the second. the second machine mangles it. you have to start over. but that's not a huge deal, because you've already found the light switch. you return to the first machine, and this time you know not to use so much raw material because you don't know how the second machine is going to work. the third thing comes out even better, and when you return to the second machine--much more easily!--it does an okay job. okay enough to look around for the light switch over the third machine.

but you're so eager to make the thing that it never occurs to you to stumble around for an excessively long time finding *all* the switches. that seems like a waste of time when you're making so much progress with this machine right here, and anyway, knowing all that work you have ahead of you might freak you out, and so it's best for all that to stay in the dark until you get to it. and that's fine. god knows that's what i did.

there's one machine that just won't work. you need to fix it but you don't know how. so you leave the factory. maybe in your frustration, you burn it down. you find a new one. in this factory, you know from the previous factory to find the first three light switches before you begin, and make sure that weirdo machine from before is working fine. you also know to use a smaller amount of raw material so you can get through it faster and waste less in the long run.

do you see what i'm saying? when writers tell me they're disappointed in themselves for not finishing a novel-length project when they haven't even taken something shorter and simpler through the revision process, i just imagine them in a dark factory in front of the first machine, shoving in tons of raw material, not knowing how many machines there are or what they do or how to fix them when they break. you swear you'll take it through the whole factory on the first try by feel alone. some people think they can skip right to the final machine.

the light switches are important, because once they're on, they're on forever. that's what it feels like when you're ready to write a novel. you can see the full process lit in front of you. and even with all the lights on, it won't go perfectly, but you've worked with broken machine #4 before and you know how to fix it, or maybe you call in a repairman (editor) to take a look at it and give you some advice.

i've been writing for ten years, i have 1.5 graduate degrees in writing, i teach writing, i've been published and i've earned more accolades than i ever thought i would. and i still don't have all my lights on. i'm still taking raw material through the machines i'm familiar with, and i have enough lights on that starting all the way at machine #1 with new raw material, knowing how many machines there are and how long it takes, has become more daunting than it used to be.

i've gotten to the point where i'm happy with the product that comes out of my lit-up machines. i'm even happy giving it to others. but i'm missing that final machine that will turn it into a product that can be sold. a lot of writers think that last machine in the dark is overrated, and i'm inclined to agree. you don't need it, you know? it's more fun and satisfying taking new raw material through the process than it is to light up that last machine and put in an agonizing amount of work, when you don't even know if the product will sell. but here i am, getting closer and closer to finding the last light switch.

perfectionists know they're in a factory, but they don't know how big it is. they don't know what's ahead of them, and instead of turning on the lights and playing around with the next machine, finding out what works and what doesn't, throwing away raw material because they believe it's precious, they move into a new factory hoping that this one only has one really good machine, an intuitive one that they already know how to use, so they can turn on the light, shove in all the raw material, and the product will come out perfectly.

He's an incredibly busy man as we all know by now. So it already means a lot to you whenever he takes time off just for you, knowing he'll have to be working late at night to compensate for the missed hours he spent with you. Honestly though, Ayato couldn't care less because you're totally worth all his attention and far more than that.

Whenever he can't take time off which does happen from time to time, he'll send you small reminders on just how much he loves and adores you, whether it's sending you a bouquet of freshly picked flowers with a tiny note that has 'I miss you' on it or simply a handwritten letter about how much he misses spending time with you and how he's counting the days until the both of you meet again. Ayato would honestly spoil you rotten.

Though not to forget to mention, when it comes to actually deliver said things to you, he'll always give them to Thoma because he obviously trusts him a ton and knows that if he gives it to him, you'll get it for sure. Nothing was too expensive or impossible when it came to you because he wanted you, and nothing had ever made him happier in his life than when he saw the depth of your emotion in your eyes and lived through the consuming intensity with which he expressed his love to you.

To be completely honest, it never really occurred to him to actually show you how helplessly in love he fell with you. Since he thinks it's more obvious than anything. Though even Heizou has times where he wants to show you his sensual and romantic side, just adding something different than his usual troublemaker personality that he is aware of gets on your nerves all the damn time.

Taking that into consideration, he 100% will invite you to a nice day out somewhere, maybe prepare a picnic for the both of you to enjoy under the sunlight and search for the perfect little location with the most amazing and breathtaking view.

Sometimes it's watatsumi island (he'll sneak the both of you in in no time) or a warm little space outside inazuma city. Finally, after having you all to himself in front of a mesmerizing view, he'll tell you those three simple words we all know too well.

˖˚˳⊹ 𝗭𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗟𝗜

Zhongli shows his affection towards you in a simpler way than you might imagine. For him it's more about physical touch than material things. Though he would spoil you from time to time (don't ask him where he got the money for the presents he gifts you from) it's more the way he touches you that makes him truly express all his feelings to you. And with touch I don't mean it in a sexual way at all.

He would simply take your hand in his much larger one and put it on his chest, right over his heart. It may sound silly to many or way too cliche, but for Zhongli it's the perfect way to express the feelings he holds towards you.

The way his heart picks up on its beating whenever you're around him, your heated cheeks whenever he takes your hand in his to hold it or merely the sight of your being. Zhongli will never understand that after all the suffering he had caused, that he was blessed with something so beautiful like the relationship he had with you.

˖˚˳⊹ 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗘

You'd think he would spoil the living hell out of you, and archons, he would. But that wasn't something that makes Childe truly show his complete raw love towards you. It can be quite hard to date him and he knows. He's always on the go, always working and rarely home. So, while also buying you a lot of goodies from each region he had to visit for a mission, something he will always include is a hand written letter, precisely like the ones he sends his family.

With this little gesture, Childe doesn't only want to keep you on track on what he's been up to but also show you that you're basically family to him and he would protect you just like he protects his family. What's a given and included in the small letters, is how much he misses being with you and that he's counting the days until he's able to see you again.

Though, something Childe will never include is anything work related. Sure, he'll tell you what places he's visiting because of work but he'll never actually talk about why he's there or what he's doing. Ajax knows the risks that come with being in the fatui or even just being affiliated with them, so of course he would never get you into any danger whatsoever. He promised himself that and we all know how much he values those.

˖˚˳⊹ 𝗞𝗔𝗭𝗨𝗛𝗔

It‘s save to say that Kazuha is quite a romantic - or maybe he‘s just helplessly in love with you. But it wasn’t always like that, after the death of his friend he has been reluctant to let another person into his life, not to mention to love again. Let me see if I can make sense of this for you, Kazuha for one, has been fighting very hard to keep his feelings in check so as not to scare you away, but as time went on, he himself wasn‘t able to hide his feelings anymore and so he did the only right thing in a situation like this, he told you.

Time went on and the both of you grew into a deeply emotional and beautiful relationship. There was passion and a deep longing he innately understood only you were able to fill. The growing desire to see you welling up in him was palpable. If Kazuha was travelling he‘d always send you hand-written letters, telling you everything about his current journey. Though once he‘s actually home where you‘re waiting for him all eagerly, he‘ll pick out a place outside Inazuma city, where the both of you were alone and undisturbed.

Once you’ve found a place to talk to each other you’ll release the heartache the both of you had been holding in and were filled with unencumbered love, melting into each other as you had the first time he told you how he felt, but now neither of you held any secrets anymore, and neither needed to maintain control in front of each other.

˖˚˳⊹ 𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗢

We know his pride will not let him express his true feelings, but still he has taken it better, far better, than you ever expected when you first gave it a shot with Itto. Though, he was scared at first since he wasn‘t able to understand his feelings. Why was he so drawn to you, that‘s what kept running through his mind but once he actually talked to Shinobu about you, he figured - this was way more than mere passion, rather a visceral need that threatened to overwhelm him if he wouldn‘t tell you how he felt.

He could understand nothing, think of nothing and feel nothing, except passionate love for you, love such as he thought he had never felt till that moment. Your heart was in everything he did, and you loved him back with both tenderness and time. Of course he could be a real pain in the ass, we all know. But exactly that was what made you drawn to him in the first place, his dorky personality but also the immense kindness he had in his heart, it always surprised you on how kind he really was despite him being an outcast.

So even though Itto is a proud individual and has far too much energy, he‘ll make sure to show you how much he loves you. Though be warned, it‘s probably not what you think. In the beginning of your relationship he‘d name his beetles after you, he said it‘s the act of love that made him do it. So imagine him chanting your name at the streets while beetle fighting random children. Although as time went on, he did try to do some considered "normal" gestures of love but you‘ll always assure him that he doesn‘t have to change and the way he shows his love towards you, couldn‘t make you happier!

[ELDEN RING GRAND THEORY REVISION 2.1- SUBJECT TO INQUIRIES AND FURTHER REVISION]

*Ever since i started putting the narrative of the game through the lens of Alchemy, it's started to make a lot of sense to me. this will be my personal grand theory for the DLC. Basically, the world of Elden Ring is affected in every aspect by Messmer and he is talked about in a way through the game and in interviews that doesnt really allow someone to actually throw a wrench into it, thus far*-------

The Narrator in the newest trailer opens with the line, "Pure and Radiant, he wields love to shrive clean the hearts of men.. There is nothing more terrifying." and frankly every aspect of Miquella's role in the Golden Order is terrifying from his perspective. He had to pass judgement in blessing others, which alone can be enough to break someone. It is from here that we may see part of Miquella's original reason in creating the Haligtree. At some point, Miquella became St. Trina to guide followers to the Haligtree. Knowing Miquella is St. Trina, it is possible to extrapolate on Messmer's identity when applying the concepts of Alchemy and how it translates to a classical understanding of Analytical Psychology. a lot of this speculation also ties back to extensively studying the world of the game, as well as a bit of real world religion, history, and even learning to cross-reference in-game crests and murals:--

We must first establish that literally anything not understood in a binary in Elden Ring actually confounds and terrifies followers of the Golden Order. It in fact worries Corhyn so deeply that he refuses to believe Goldmask as he grovels in the ashes of the Erdtree-- One of the biggest revelations in the entire game is premised around breaking a binary that was never proven to be a binary at all. In other words, the entire Golden Order is based in dichotomies and binaries and there is a fundamental flaw in that regard; it disregards the individual and non-binary aspects of the World to force them into a simpler mold that was going to fall with time, regardless.- Much like with Gwyn's plight in Dark Souls; it was never about the people of the land with him, it was about preventing a coming age and clinging onto whatever control found in preserving the current one forever.

At the basis, St. Trina and Miquella may have shared one body but two identities because of having been born of a single-bodied Rebis, or at least as the Golden Order sees Marika/Radagon, a God. this is an ability only demonstrated by Marika that Malenia seems incapable of. I believe her bestowment from the outer god of Rot is the reason for her lack of other personal identities; she does not have any others to project other than what she is, due to societal perception of her bestowment/affliction and her choice to let miquella ascend to the role she could also be in. In the current age, all she has been doing is dreaming (note: st. trina) and awakens promptly when we arrive; likely to the only movement of air she's felt in ages

I think Miquella is the entity of purity while St. Trina is a Lunar Reflection; the Albedo, or an Animus in Jungian Psychology, which has heavy ties to alchemy. She's the hero and protector of the people thar Miquella often envisions within. Messmer, residing in the shadow realm, represents a deep seated truth within Miquella- a sort of "Cognitive Rubedo" if you will, or a "Truth in the Mind" that he hates as much as others fear, and that nobody wants to be found. part of this truth must be Marika's fault, and it has left Miquella with a personal guilt that has torn at him so badly that eventually, a Shadow of himself tore away and became its own monster from Within.

Imagine it like this; if St. Trina is Miquella's image of theirself as a blessed, pure caretaker and a sort of christ-like figure, then Messmer is the part of him that represents "The Sins of The Father." Marika's own rise to power and established order themselves are what shaped a young Miquella. It was with time and between his noted brilliance and ability to "compel affection," that he found a way to break free of his fated identity which meant breaking free of the Order itself.

Applying the Realm of Shadows to this "Within," having been physically separated from the lands between by Marika's own mischievous deeds, it is likely that the shadow realm now acts as a cognitive realm of Marika's, of sorts, which could absolutely contain the perception or persona of another person within it. (think Mementos from Persona 5, lol)

So.. Without the current Elden Ring there would be no Order, but the current Order hides a serpent at the central intersection, which seems to represent Messmer. this is the same concept as how a pentagram represents a human, and humanity, while being inverted it represents a goat, or in many cases, Baphomet. Baphomet is labeled as half-human, half-animal, male and female, good and evil.. he is referred to as a man but is essentially every binary and every dichotomy that arises from them. He is even seen as both a deity and a demon. I believe Miquella and Radagon's work on discovering the Law of Causality is the main hint toward Messmer's presence, which ties into the rest of the alchemy involved. He is a pagan cult deity who represents balance and neutrality, and is almost always depicted doing a gesture signifying "as above; so below" which is a condensed version of the Law of Causality, already known to be associated with Miquella and Radagon, well before the Shattering; "Causality is an influence by which one event, process, state, or object contributes to the production of another event, process, state, or object where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause."

For clarity's sake, because i figure i'll be asked if not addressed: It's not impossible for Messmer and Miquella+Malenia to have all been the first child of Radagon/Marika with this Theory. Malenia was a twin born at the same time as Miquella, so she would be a first child with Miquella. If Messmer is a diety representing neutrality or, as I expect, a product of the Law of Causality, then he would be a product of Miquella as much as Miquella is of him. this idea lends to the possibility of Miquella actually being the remainder that was left over from a splitting where Messmer's counterparts (possibly both Miquella and Malenia, given their twin nature) are representative of his own aspects.. it does is beg a sort of "chicken or egg" paradox, but before we had a realistic answer to that, many would reply- and almost sarcastically, if not for the fact that it was the best answer we had- that the first thing to appear was "the Universe." The modern answer is, in fact, that the egg came first. (whether any of this analogy alludes to the actual lore or not is something i think we'd just have to wait for the expansion to know)

Marika herself had this Shadow hidden away, and this presents rather well because we know that there was a long period of time after the Night of Black Knives that Marika was still active but becoming more distraught, preceding the Shattering. on top of this, more proof resides in that, within Jungian psychology, it is that one's Anima/Animus comes to them in dreams, much like St. Trina came to people in theirs (who, as an Animus herself, was probably motivated by helping malenia look for her Anima, which perhaps never existed). It is also true that a Shadow Persona is borne of conflict tearing at one's conscious until it becomes its own entity, which i've already presumed of Messmer above.

'i loved everything about you that hurt' to me feels like an admission. the persona loved the way her muse kept her tethered to the lie she was living. she loves the thing she hates about him. and even though the facade is falling apart, and it hurts to keep it in place, this is what's familiar ('the prince of any failing empire knows that everybody wants/to drive on through the night if its the drive back home' the prince in this case is our persona, a butch lesbian who has recently ended a relationship with a boy that she kept alive out of comphet). things arent the same anymore. shes a different person, or maybe the same person she always was, just openly. she wears his clothes and acts his part, and she know shes not supposed to look like this, be like this, but maybe this is her way of doing what shes told (its a strange way of saying that i know i'm supposed to love you). and maybe she yearns for the comfortable cage she knew, because freedom is unfamiliar, its unlike anything shes known before, and shes tries to go back to what she knows (ive already given up on myself twice/third time is the charm/threw caution to the wind but ive got a lousy arm). and she takes the memory of the boy she made herself love, and she imagines herself playing the part she was always told she had to, even if it doesnt fit, because denial is an intoxicating thing, oblivion is often bliss. (figured on not figuring myself out). and its not like the relationship was loveless. the persona loved him. he saved her life. but every kiss lingers, and not necessarily in a good way.

i want to take a moment to note the difference in prechorus lyrics. at first its "some nights they get so bad/you almost pick up the phone" and "some nights they get so bad/i almost pick up the phone" theres a lot of ways to interpret these lines, whos calling who, whos phone is ringing, but i think my favourite interpretation is that both the persona and her ex are considering making a call. some nights it gets so bad he almost calls her, in a bid to love someone who wont love him. some nights it gets so bad she almost calls him, in a bid to go back to a simpler time.

Honestly this page was a lot of fun, I love recreating areas in gaming a lot, so this was a lot of fun with the whole playing around with multiple universes in smash to give the idea that the Inkling girl just can't hit a shot.

Of note:

I like to think that Inkling Girl's first mistake was skipping Sheldon's explanation. Like, I get it, but his bios do give you a hint of how the thing is supposed to work. Just because you're familiar with a thing it doesn't mean you should skip the manual.

I could have straight up taken a picture of Mementos, but I instead re-drew the whole bit (if anything I just reused a re-draw of the main mementos map which I have done in a previous drawing project). I honestly do not skip steps, if I can recreate a thing for the shot, I'll go out of my way to do it. It makes things look more seamless and in-line with the drawings as a whole if I do everything from scratch, though I'm not above re-using previous drawing assets if I can get away with it (since the mementos map never really changes, I can just reuse that isolated re-draw I have).

Oh, by the by, I kinda based Joker's render off his appearence in Tactica since that had been recently released by the time I was doing the drawing. I do like the tactica renders so I may base the persona characters off that to simplify them a bit style-wise.

I know WarioWare being used for Samus is a bit of an odd choice, but I figured I could just do a simpler area rather than going with either Norfair (all that lava would get in the way of the ORANGE paint), Brinstar (same, but Yellow) or Frigate Orpheon (I didn't really need the parasite queen in the background). Adding Pikachu in was a later idea just to highlight how much she's missing the shot.

Dedede and a Pikmin laying down was funny enough already, but here's a bit of hilarity I thought about (and I know that explaining the joke ruins it, but you know, this is supposed to be a commentary): this is flat zone, it's entirely 2D, the inkling girl somehow missed the shot even when you only needed to aim left or right.

I like Minecraft a lot, but when DRAWING the universe its a bit dull if everything is just cubes. So while I totally can do that I just choose to make a stylized version that is semi-cubey for most everything. Though Alex I prefer to go full proportions.

Alex being more human proportioned does bring some challenges since I do want her to look like a country bumpkin of sorts, so this comic helped me finalize how I would do it. Honestly its kind of based on how artist Peargor does it. Though I'm gonna go with a longer braid and some freckles.

I do largely prefer Alex over Steve though, so you'll likely see her whenever I involve minecraft on my drawings. If I were to draw steve though? I'd likely make him buff. I tend to think of Alex as the builder/farmer (which is my playstyle) whereas Steve is the adventurer (how my friends play the game).

I didn't actually borrow any textures from Minecraft, they were self made. Which is kind of why they're kind of shit.

Honestly drawing the regular Charger was a bit of a thing. The Splatoon weaponry can be very complex in its detailing so for the first few panels it was kind of traced. Over time I just did it on my own for later panels.

Tracing isn't a bad practice, just as long as you don't pass an entirely traced work as your own. Trace responsibly kids, it helps learn how to do a thing.

NOTE 1: First stanza was the most awkward to make and probably still is the most awkward in general. But I couldnt think of an alternative thats without even more awkward sentence structure. And I think it works out in terms of Luka uncomfortably dogpiling Mizi with compliments, while also calling her “The light and sun, my star.”

NOTE 2: Sad vs. saddened has an odd difference in nuance in my mind but using a synonym for sad felt more jarring and excessive. Left it as is because it does get the point across, and maybe its just me overthinking it, lol.

NOTE 3: Ive considered changing “I don’t believe. You’re a liar.” to something like “Dont believe it,” or “Dont believe you,” but I try not to change lyrics that are already in English. I also think the awkwardness serves to portray Mizi’s state (of struggling to sing) in Round 5 very well and that there may be some intentional play on words of taking the “You” from “You’re” to finish the first phrase, so it works out.

NOTE 4: The original translation of “The endless walls / A fall with no ground” is actually pretty interesting to ponder about and I encourage others to do so about Luka’s character!

At first, I personally interpreted it as walls being obstacles to a goal, in which, no matter how much you overcome, there is another to face. And then the fall part is simpler to understand and just illustrates the hopelessness and despair of such a situation.

Thinking more, I considered joining the two lines and perceiving the walls' “endlessness” in terms of “height,” which would be why the fall would be perceive as "with no ground." Even if you were to overcome and stand at the top of such a wall (potentially referring to Luka’s position as a winner of Alien Stage), the situation is terrifying. And of course, falling from such a height (dying) is terrifying too. So this lyric could refer to how Luka views life as terrible either way (theres no winning) and/or that, despite his “advantageous position,” he’ll never be able to properly overcome his circumstances as a human pet.

Anyways! *kicks my feet* I translated the wall line as ambiguous to either interpretation because the ambiguity is likely the intention and I think theres value in all those takes.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 9 and 27): “When our darkness overlaps onto each other” You have to pause on the “o” in “overlap,” which is a bit awkward. The current lyric works out well since the syllable that needs to be paused on is a single word (“starts”). This line rhythmically was probably the most difficult to tackle, haha.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 14 and 32): “Your beauty is forever.” As someone who prefers not deviating from a translation as much as possible, to be frank, that just sounds bad, imo, lol. But if you prefer that option, go for it, I guess!

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 21 and 22): “I will lose all my sense / I will go blind and deaf” I enjoyed the first half implying that one’s losing their “mental” sense (mind), but felt that it deviated from original meaning too much.
