Not far from Steve’s house, there’s a makeshift swing. He found it when he was out in the woods in his backyard but never knew for sure who put it there. It was a long rope tied to a sturdy tree limb with a piece of wood used as the seat. Ever since that day, Steve would go out and swing when he wanted to be alone. Especially on days that were harder than others.
He never told anyone about the swing. He was close with telling Nancy, but she broke up with him before he ever told her. After their breakup, the swing is where he found himself. Sometimes he would just sit as the wind would gently rock him back and forth, other times he’d pull the swing up the small hill to get enough momentum that he could actually swing. It was a good place to clear his head. As he’d jump onto it he’d scream and let himself loose, enjoying the breeze in his face. He never even told Robin about it. This swing was his. It was a thing for him to do alone.
The first person to find out about the swing was Eddie. Steve had been going through one of his depressive episodes and no one had heard from him in days. Eddie went to the house to check on him, to find he wasn’t there even though his car was. He was worried, so he started searching for him. He looked around the whole house, in the front and backyard, and eventually made his way into the woods.
He eventually found Steve, sitting alone on his swing with his head down.
“Shit dude! You had us worried sick!” Eddie ran up to him to make sure he wasn’t hurt, Steve jerked his head up at Eddie’s voice, causing him to sway back and forth on the swing. Eddie reached for him to make sure he was stable and didn’t fall off.
“I’m fine.”
Eddie looked around before facing Steve again, “Is this where you go when you disappear?”
Steve offered a small smile and pushed his feet off the ground so he could swing back and forth as they talked, “Yeah. I guess it’s just a good way to clear my head.”
“You make this?”
Steve shook his head no, “I found it a few years ago, no idea where it came from.”
Eddie chuckled softly and folded his arms as he watched Steve swing, “You sure it’s safe?”
“Despite my many injuries over the years, I’ve yet to get hurt from it.” Steve giggled softly, eventually he put his feet down to stop himself and got off, holding it still. He pointed to it, “Wanna try it?”
Eddie walked over to where Steve was standing and grabbed the rope, Steve did his best to help Eddie get on and gave him a push before moving out of the way. Despite his hair flying everywhere, Eddie looked back at Steve and gave him a big grin. They spent the next hour trading off and pushing each other, both falling into comfortable laughter.
After Eddie’s final turn, he looked at Steve, “I get why you do it. It’s- nice.”
Steve returned his gaze, “Almost freeing right? ‘S nice to just- not think.”
Eddie smiled and nudged Steve’s shoulder as they made the walk back to his house and he ended up staying as they watched a movie together.
The swing was now Steve and Eddie’s thing. A few weeks later they shared their first kiss there. Had they not moved out of Hawkins, Steve probably would have proposed there too. However, they’d always make sure to visit the swing when they were back in town, even as they grew older.

went down the rabbit hole on YouTube of other black ppl who are aromantics, virgins, never dated, etc. and I’m sitting here cheesing so hard bc I’ve never felt so validated. Like it’s not something I’ve ever felt ashamed or bad about and I’ve never had the desire to lose the ‘v card’ or be in a relationship but I feel like sometimes it’s hard to talk to other people about who aren’t and it’s just reaaaally nice to see other people that look like you sharing the same experience.

Do y’all think the Lord of the Flies characters ever had gay thoughts and blamed it on the long hair? Like they think one of the other characters is pretty or something and they’re just like “I’m not gay you just look like a girl”. Or is it just me

cast a spell on my heart
Posted on ao3: read here!
Standing in front of the town’s record shop, now fully redecorated to appear as though it’s a magic shop, Pearl has started to feel just a bit too out of her element.
She cranes her head awkwardly to the side to read the sign out front, which displays the words ‘The Crystal Cliffs Emporium’. Apparently, it’s where she’s supposed to go to find the next key item for her quest— collect three magical stones to unlock the seal on something called…a Rune Blade…?
So, Pearl might not be the best person to LARP with.
— — —
(In which Pearl is absolutely clueless on how to pretend as a Queen and discovers that flirting works just as well as actually roleplaying. — For @mcyt-yuri-week Valentines day 2: Royalty/Knight)

Season one - Mike and Joyce looking for Will. We are clearly following them because of their specific connections to Will, that are different than the other characters we see in the show.
Season two - Mike scared for his best friend, staying by his side and trying to fix the situation. Staying close to Will, even when he’s possessed and in the lab and people are dying.
Season three - Mike and El having relationship problems. Mike trying to fix it, but failing. Fighting with Will. Being scared for Will and trying to protect Will and El for the rest of the season.
Season four - Mike and El having relationship problems. Will and Mike fighting, but resolving most of their issues. Development of Mike and Will’s relationship.
Michael Wheeler simply does not have an arc that doesn’t revolve around Will. Every season of Stranger Things has an emphasis on the importance of Mike and Will’s relationship.
To reiterate and emphasize, s1- Will, s2- Will, s3 - relationship problems with El and fighting with Will, s4 - relationship problems with El and fighting with Will.
Stranger Things has always been about Will. And it’s always shown us the people who love Will, like Joyce and Jonathan and his friends. Even Nancy in season three, when she saw what was happening her first thought was to call Jonathan and ask if Will was safe.
In season four, one of my favourite lines is when Dustin says, “God, we need Will” because it says so much. They do need Will, because of plot reasons and Vecna and the Upside Down, but also because he’s an irreplaceable part of the party. Will isn’t even there in season four with the Hawkins crew, and he comes up multiple times. Talking about Max’s drawing, talking about communicating with the lights, talking about Mike whining about not being able to reach him over the phone: Will has always been important.
Stranger Things has always been about Will. And the reason that Mike and Joyce and El are always important and are always our narrators is because of Will’s relationship to them. It’s always been about the importance of and the love in those relationships.
Stranger Things has always been about a single mother trying to protect her kids. It’s always been about Joyce’s unconditional love for Will and Jonathan and El.
Stranger Things has always been about the connection between Will and El. About their similarities and their bond. And how they parallel each other and how they’re siblings.
And,
Stranger Things has always been about Mike Wheeler being in love with Will Byers.
How he’s scared of losing him, and forced conformity, and how much he cares for Will- in season one and two and even in season three and four when he fucks up but tries to fix it immediately.
Mike’s character hasn’t been the leader of the party since season one. He’s even stopped DM’ing by the time season three roles around. But in season four, Will gives him the painting and reminds him of who he is. He’s the leader of the party. He’s the heart.
He’s the kid who called Lucas and said he was worried about Will. Who called his little sister ‘baby Holly.’ Who was kind to El, who was scared and would barely even talk in season one, when his friends wanted to get rid of her. Who stood up to Troy. Who was the first to believe that Will was in danger. Who told Dustin that they were all his best friends. Who stayed up all night waiting for Will to wake up.
That’s Mike.
But, “forced conformity is what’s killing the kids”, and “if you like her so much then why don’t you marry her” and “you see what happens?” and Troy and the whole set up from season one to four. It leads us to, “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” and “we’re friends” and “You can’t even write it Mike” and “I love you.”
Season three was rock bottom for Mike. In terms of his character, and losing himself, season three was the season where he tried to conform to what everyone else thought. Him and Lucas spent so much time trying to figure out Mike and El’s relationship. And then he was fighting with Will. And at the end of season three, El kissed him and told him she loved him and he looked so lost. And then Will and El were gone.
Season four, while a rock bottom for nearly everyone else, is the beginning of an upwards slant. Mike’s playing D&D again, he’s wearing different clothes, his hair is different, he’s stopped trying to fit in. When he gets to Lenora, he goes back to season three, and at Rink O’ Mania it’s a repeat of Mike and Will’s fight, and El is miserable as well. But after that, there’s a switch. Mike starts trying to fix things. With El first, he tries to talk to her, he doesn’t apologize, but he’s not being an asshole like he was the night before. They fight, but it’s not unnecessary. It isn’t El dumping him at the mall, it’s a conversation a long time coming.
And then Mike talks to Will. And they’re not yelling at each other in the rain, they’re having conversations in the sunlight in Will’s room, and on top of cars, and in moments where they’re free to talk. It’s similar to how they talked to each other in season two, and some what similar situations albeit reversed. Instead of Mike comforting Will and trying to fix the Mind Flayer situation and failing, it’s Will trying to comfort Mike and fix his relationship and failing.
I guess what I’m thinking here is that season five is going to be the final trek back to season one Mike. He’s going to be the heart of the party because he’s going to be honest about where his heart is leading him. And he’s going to keep them all together because he’s going to have to. Dustin and Lucas and Will are all in terrible places. Eddie’s dead, Max might die, Will’s back in Hawkins and he can feel Henry again.
Someone’s got to step up and keep them all together. It’s going to be Mike because he’s the DM, the leader, the heart. Despite his recent actions, he is still the heart of the party. In season three Will yells, “you’re ruining our party” at Mike, because that’s the reason it’s falling apart. Mike is supposed to keep them all together. But he can’t do that if he’s not being honest with them, with himself.
Mike has always orbited around Will. His character through the seasons has warped drastically from one of the most selfless character to one of the most selfish because of everything that happened in season one and who he was told he was supposed to be. Mike is in the trifecta of “we love Will in different but equally important ways” and thus is narrating the story. We’ve gone from seeing nearly all of his thought process in season one, to seeing barley anything in season four. But Mike’s character art is more like a dip. Downhill and crashing into the line at season three, but curving itself upwards in season four.
“Friends don’t lie.” Mike is going to be honest in season five. He’s going to relearn how to care for the people around him and how to be kind. He’s going to let himself love Will Byers, and he’s going to figure out how to bring the party back together.
He’s the god damn heart.
He just needs to get his shit together.
But he’s not going to be doing it alone. He’s got Will, and Dustin, and Lucas, and El. He just needs to bring them together again. And to do that, he needs to tell apologize, and be honest.
Hopper tells him that he’s really grown when he sees him at the cabin. And he has.
My last point here, is that Mike has had a reputation as a liar and an asshole since the beginning of season two: With Max, and stealing from Nancy, and lying to El. But in season one he wasn’t either of those things. But we do see the tracks starting to be laid down with him yelling at El and fighting with Lucas. Those directly relate to why Mike is a liar and and asshole in later seasons: forced conformity and homophobia. And the set up for those is in season one as well.
The full circle moment is directly tied to Will and how Mike feels about Will. Season one we have homophobia from nearly all sides in the forms of peer pressure and bullying and overall societal pressure to conform. Mike’s experiences in season one are about Troy’s homophobic comments and Will. And more so, since the beginning of the show, Mike and Will have both been increasingly miserable. Everything thrown their way has been to break them. Mike’s character becoming rude and an asshole is a direct result of this. And a direct result of season one.
Mike is written as a character that is experiencing many terrible things and reacts to those. We see him fall, but now we’re going to see him get back up.
Mike’s arc is only going to be complete when there is resolution from the events in season one.
That means that Mike’s arc is complete when he accepts that he’s in love with Will.
And when him and Will get a happy ending.
