Got past that Beau & Nott convo in E85, have three (3) whole thoughts.
1. Beau’s little confession, omg, I genuinely did not expect this for my fave ship, not even interest on her side. (it’s nOT A THING, she says, like a liar). Now I’m going to be satisfied regardless of how it all ultimately turns out. Because if it does happen, this is some genuine slow burn in canon. And if it doesn’t happen, we get the wonderfully iddy sadness of Beau’s unrequited pining to roll around in, and I will enjoy that too.
....It is canon that she’s fantasized about helping a lost Jester find her way, I am still in disbelief.
2. I think the best part of Beau and Nott’s Accidental Deep Conversations™ is that their coping strategies for hiding shit are actually very similar, though how conscious they are of said strategy differs. In essence, they throw out the surface level summary of who they are early on, with little of that hidden from the group. Nott’s an alcoholic goblin who hates goblins. Beau loudly broadcasts that she has issues with her dad and also that she’s into half the women she meets.
These aren’t exactly comfortable covers for the others to be around, so it doesn’t serve that purpose, but it does serve the purpose of making people back off on the questions for a bit. After all, it seems about right, and you don’t really want to dig into that abrasive layer. (It’s distinct, I think, from Fjord’s tight-lippedness, Jester’s utter truthfulness about the facts of her life if not the feelings or Caleb’s eagerness to spill once he decides to.)
Everyone was taken aback by the Veth reveal, and it also looks like none of the others anticipated Beau’s crush.
3. It has been fucking hilarious to watch this fandom try to react “correctly” to who Nott is, and to have Nott constantly confound those attempts. From Nott’s early strategy of calling herself a little girl to lessen how threatening she seems in disguise (”DON’T SHIP NOTT WITH ANYONE HDU!!”) to the unfurling of how much she hates being a goblin to the story of Yeza and Luke and finally now, to this attraction to Caleb too.
I kind of love that muddledness. She was attracted to Caleb when she first met him, clearly kind of still is, and that can very much co-exist with her happy marriage, with her self-described parental protectiveness over Caleb, with all the other complicated, contradictory bits that make up Nott.
