Studying had become a chore, I was in real need of inspiration, motivation and a positive influence 3. Do you have any other blogs besides your studyblr? Grading Super Bowl XLII

What was the final score?

New York 17, New England 14

How much of the game was close? What was the “edge of your seat factor” like? (20 points)

The entire game was close. The largest lead either team had all day was four points. (New England led 7-3 and 14-10.) In the final three minutes of the game, each team scored a touchdown that looked likely to make them the Super Bowl champion.

The game-winning drive was one of the most dramatic sequences in Super Bowl history. Down four points late in the fourth quarter against an undefeated team that was favored by nearly two touchdowns, the Giants went 83 yards in 12 plays to take a 17-14 lead. On that final drive, Brandon Jacobs converted a 4th and 1 from the Giants’ 37, pounding the ball through the line for two yards. A few plays later, Eli Manning and David Tyree combined for one of the most amazing plays you’ll ever see. Facing a ferocious Patriots pass rush on 3rd and 5, Manning somehow escaped from a near-certain sack and chucked the ball deep downfield. David Tyree, who was almost exclusively a special teams player, went up in the air and caught the ball by pinning it to his helmet as Patriots DB Rodney Harrison attempted to knock it away.

Four plays later, with less than 40 seconds left in the game, Manning found a wide open Plaxico Burress in the end zone for the Super Bowl winning touchdown. This was, at the time, the closest Super Bowl of all time. It may still be - I still have ten more games to watch - but I can’t imagine how it would be possible for a closer, more dramatic game. (Score: 20 out of 20)

Was there any kind of comeback? Was there ever any indication that the team which was trailing had a chance to come from behind and win? (15 points)

There were two lead changes in the final three minutes of the game. It was so tight that neither team had an opportunity to put together a comeback as it’s normally defined. Those two clutch touchdown drives, though, were both exciting, impressive sequences that ended in a fourth quarter lead change. It doesn’t get much better than that, even if neither team ever had a substantial lead. (Score: 14 out of 15)

Did the great players come through with great performances? (15 points)

Not quite great, for the most part, but great-adjacent. Tom Brady completed more than 60% of his passes for 266 yards, a touchdown, and zero interceptions. I’ll give him extra credit for putting up that kind of performance against the best pass rush in football. The 2007 Giants’ defensive line had future Hall of Famer Michael Strahan (9 sacks), Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora (13 sacks), and Justin Tuck (10 sacks). With those three in his face all day, Brady was able to find receivers, complete passes, and avoid turning the ball over.

Speaking of the Giants’ defensive line, New York’s pass rush was awesome. Unofficially, the Giants had five sacks, knocked Brady down eight more times, hurried five passes, and knocked down two throws. They dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the game, and it seemed as if nearly any quarterback not named Tom Brady would have capitulated in the face of that sort of pressure.

Patriots receiver Randy Moss, an obvious future Hall of Famer, was a non-factor for the first three quarters of the game (one catch) but showed flashes of brilliance in the fourth. Moss caught three passes on New England’s fourth quarter scoring drive including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:45 left on the clock. He finished the game with five catches for 62 yards and a score.

Wes Welker did exactly what you’d expect him to do. He tied the single game Super Bowl record with 11 receptions, most of them coming underneath and/or across the middle for ten yards or so. Welker was never a gamebreaker like Jerry Rice or Randy Moss, but he was as good a slot receiver as there has ever been. He was irritating to the opposing teams, the football equivalent of a pebble in your shoe. Welker was never going to destroy you by himself, but he was constantly bothersome, slowly and consistently doing damage.

With the possible exception of the Giants’ defensive line, the star players in Super Bowl XLII were good but not great. The Giants’ d-line was excellent. (Score: 11 out of 15)

Were the teams historically great? (10 points)

The Patriots were, of course.

The 2007 Giants were not. They went 10-6 and made the playoffs as a Wild Card team, outscoring their opponents by a bit more than a point per game. In 2006, the Giants somehow earned a Wild Card playoff appearance despite having lost eight games and having been outscored by their opponents. After this Super Bowl win, the Giants had a strong 2008 season, winning the NFC East with a 12-4 record, before missing the playoffs in six of the next seven years. It’s clear that this Giants team was talented, mostly healthy, and playing well in the postseason. It’s just as clear they didn’t have a sustained period of greatness.

I’m being a bit kind grading this category, mostly because the Patriots team was (and still is) so ridiculously great. (Score: 9 out of 10)

Were there memorable moments that will be talked about for decades? (10 points)

The Helmet Catch.

There aren’t a ton of plays in football that are known by a specific name. The Catch. Red Right 88. Wide Right. The Fumble. (Come to think of it, as a Bills fan who grew up in a Browns household in Northeast Ohio, most of these make me wince to think about.) The Immaculate Reception.

David Tyree’s helmet catch late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII is one of those plays that you can describe with just a few words and have everybody immediately know what you’re talking about. If it’s not the single most memorable play in Super Bowl history, it’s at least in the conversation. (Score: 10 out of 10)

How was the quality of play? Were there a lot of penalties, punts, and turnovers? (15 points)

Good to very good. It was clear what each team was attempting to do on each side of the ball, and they mostly succeeded.

The Giants offense worked to control the ball and control the clock, slowing the game down and keeping New England’s offense off the field for huge chunks of the game. The Giants defense wanted to make Tom Brady’s life miserable, knocking him down and forcing hurried throws. The Patriots offense wanted to pass the ball, largely eschewing the run game in favor of short high-percentage passes intended to get the ball to quick players with room to work. The Patriots defense seemed to want to shut down New York’s running game, forcing passes and presumably making possessions shorter in order to get the ball back quickly.

Of those four groups, perhaps the Patriots defense was the one that least successfully accomplished its goal. That said, they were pretty solid, allowing only 3.5 yards per carry for the game and giving up only three points in the first three quarters of the game.

There were only two turnovers, weren’t a ton of penalties, and relatively few punts. (Score: 12 out of 15)

Are there any other factors that add to the greatness the game? This covers things like weather, story line, rivalry matchup, legacy franchises, unexpected results, etc. (15 points)

Yes. Goodness, yes. This is one of the first Super Bowl games you’d think of when you consider intangible factors that make some games better than others.

Where to begin? I guess I’ll start with the Patriots attempting to be the first NFL team in 35 years to roll through the entire regular season and postseason without losing a game. They failed, of course, which if anything makes this game more memorable.

The Patriots weren’t just favorites to win this game, they were prohibitive favorites. New England was favored by 12.5 points, one of the largest point spreads ever seen in a Super Bowl. That huge point spread and the final score add up to a huge upset.

New England head coach Bill Belichick was one of the longest-serving assistant coaches in New York Giants history before leaving the Giants to become a head coach. His defensive gameplan to shut down the Bills in Super Bowl XXV is rightfully considered a masterpiece, and is one of the biggest reasons that Giants team got a ring and 15-year-old me got a sad. It was not lost on observers at the time that the Giants were facing someone with a long and successful history inside their organization.

Apart from perhaps Super Bowl III, this was the Super Bowl with the most off-field factors adding to its greatness.

How does the game grade overall? (sum of all previous categories, 100 points)

91 out of 100. The greatest Super Bowl of all time, at least when it was played. It had everything: Great players playing well, comebacks, clutch scoring drives, an outcome that came down to the final minute of play, a legendary team attempting to accomplish something (19-0) that had never before been done, a huge upset, and a great head coach facing the team where he first came to prominence.

It’s entirely possible that I’ll see a better Super Bowl before this project is over, but I don’t expect it to happen.
