#this is not a hot take #white supremacy and imperialist history frames race and chattel slavery as universal and normal #and natural #by characterizing non-roman forms of slavery as though they were identical to chattel slavery #and of course by pretending as though european constructions of race were widely accepted everywhere even prior to colonialism #and this is directly connected to the framing of slavery as well #the idea that all slavery fits the pattersonian definition #and all slavery was racialized #and racialized in the same way chattel slavery was racialized #i.e. that all cultures or several cultures enslaved black people (so africans) exclusively #their favorite to do this with is the indian ocean slave trade #or as white historians call it: the ‘islamic slave trade’ #(despite the fact that slavery in the middle east predates islam) #the indian ocean slave trade does take shape after the rise of islam and the establishment of muslim empire but largely due to imperial #expansion #and slaves are taken from the periphery of the empire #so east and north africa eastern europe and central asia #(central asian slaves would then go on and establish from of the early sultanates in south asia and these were called the slave dynasties #the first was qutb al din aibak #but anyway #yes by the 18th and 19th century slaves in the middle east were mostly black #(i wonder what might have spurred this!) #but before they were explicitly brought in from the outer realm of the empire #and early texts do not feature a focus on constructing a racialized class of slaves #(later texts do feature racial hositility after the slave trade zeroes in on africans) #and what purpose does this serve? #well first it establishes the idea of africans as an ideal slave population as widely accepted #which makes it seem as though there is something innate and natural about us that predisposes us for servitude and subjugation #that everyone can recognize #second it makes the villains of slavery into europe’s number 1 enemy: the middle east and islam

I thought you might like these moss-filled pawprints in concrete which I saw earlier. :-)

ID: a row of medium sized pawprints, most likely a dog's, dried into the concrete of a pavement kerb. Time and rain has filled the pawprints in with green moss or lichen. The pavement is glowing in the sunlight and you can see the sitting shadow of a dog beside me.
