If you’re comfortable answering, I’m just curious as to how Callie is doing? Any news with her labwork?

she's got a lot wrong with her, if she responds well to treatment she could still stick around for a little while longer though. it's genuinely a very uncertain time right now. she has hyperthyroidism that suddenly progressed rapidly and it was taking her heart, kidney, and liver along with it. she's on two twice-daily meds right now, as well as an as needed pain medicine and today is actually the first day she got subcutaneous fluids done at home, alana did them. she has to have them every other day for a few weeks and then twice weekly for some time after that. we had to get a little standing desk and iv pole to be able to administer them properly. it's not really clear how bad the damage her thyroid caused is, but she was definitely not doing well before her episode and we misattributed it to her age and arthritis. if what's happening to callie is a lesson for anyone other than us, don't ignore any signs even if they seem like it's just your cat getting older. callie went from showing subtle signs and hiding her sickness well to barely being able to walk very quickly, it was scary and the biggest regret is that we didn't know the subtle signs were signs at all. all we can do now is treat her and hope she recovers well enough to live awhile longer. I was reading stories from other people who's cats were diagnosed exactly the same way she was and theirs' ended up living another two or three years in some cases. we just have to enjoy the time we have with her and hope the medicine helps her feel better and hopefully heal, if nothing else this is giving me time to cope with her eventual death because I struggle a lot with loss. sorry for not posting an update sooner, I'm not doing great right now given all of this and a lot of other stressful things happening with our lives. thank you for checking in and I'll update again whenever we know more, plus i'll try to post pictures of her more frequently.

Ok, again, I liked Shadow and I should probably do my bullet point thoughts on the whole book before this but

literally what are they doing with Mothwing?

After River, I thought “ooh hoo hoo! Wouldn’t it be delicious if Mothwing became leader?” but it was mostly for fun (especially since I don’t love having another old leader, especially after Mistystar, and now especially if Squirrelflight hopefully survives to be made leader). But then after Sky it looked more like they were actually going for it with the “choose an unlikely cat” thing

But now in Shadow...Mothwing is a background cat, even more background than other formerly background characters? Despite being, by about halfway through the book, the only cat in RiverClan with any actual authority that doesn’t come from Tigerstar?? And she says and does almost nothing. She barely even does any healer work, off screen apparently suggests not even going to the Moonpool meetings anymore, she doesn’t even really fight with Frostpaw - she’s just kind of terse with her, she’s right about telling Tigerstar the truth causing problems, she snarks about Jayfeather, and attends Gatherings but says very little, despite essentially speaking for RiverClan in the two previous books. Otherwise it seems like she went from an incredibly chaotic experience having everyone in the clan look to her...to somehow having a lot of free time, and very little to say, despite losing her apprentice.

And I love getting to see more interpersonal drama in RiverClan and seeing Icewing and Harelight get more character development and the reveal of Splashtail’s machinations, but it’s bizarre how much should bring to mind Mothwing for the characters but instead she fades to the back and I genuinely don’t know if this is on purpose or not.

multiple characters bring up Tigerstar I and directly callout Tigerheartstar for also taking over RiverClan

the book ends with the tension of one Tigerstar descendant deciding to do the right thing and willingly give up power, while the writing on the wall is that another will soon be fighting to keep his

if nothing else, shouldn’t RiverClan/Mothwing be deeply concerned now about the lack of Medicine Cat apprentices? I know they have a lot going on, but that just proves how much they need a med cat. Mothwing ain’t getting any younger (unless she gets 9 lives), there are no kits in the nursery, and Leafbare is around the corner. And also something terrible keeps happening to RiverClan leadership lol Mothwing should have a lot to say and do in the main plot, and she just doesn’t for some reason this book

I know people bash on spottedleaf for telling leafpool to follow her heart and then getting mad at her later but what I find interesting about the follow your heart scene is how spottedleaf says it. Because she doesn't just say "follow your heart" she also says "Deep inside, you know what is right, and you must follow your heart" and then reiterates the you know what is right part again when leafpool thinks that she was getting spottedleafs blessing to run away. yeah you can still interpret that as spottedleaf telling her to run off with crowfeather but you could also say that spottedleaf didn't say that at all and told leafpool to do what was right
