Said I was gonna do it so here’s a brief, not at all complete/exhaustive, list of the ways Holmes adapted his lifestyle and behaviours to accomodate Watson’s disablities etc

Watson’s shoulder injury means he cannot lift his arm above his head at all. This is not usually an issue, as he can still use his other arm to reach things, but the moment Holmes realised this was something he had learned to work around, he thought “oh shit the shelves are too high” and wordlessly had Watson’s shelves, bookcase and wardrobe renovated/moved to be more accesible for said arm. This is not something they have ever spoken about but Watson felt a surge of exasperated fondness regardless 

While it’s true that Watson has nightmares, those are only part of his PTSD. He also has certain triggers, like sudden explosives, hence why Holmes or Mrs Hudson always let him know when a chemical experiment is happening. Over the years this specific ‘trigger’ has dialed back significantly but the habit of telling him of the experiments has never stopped. Holmes is also careful when putting rosin on his bow, as Watson once told him that it reminded him of hacksaws, and there are days when he simply cannot deal with large noisy crowds. Should he get overwhelmed by such noise, Holmes will quietly (and subtly!) lead him someplace quieter to catch his breath

Holmes is the one who brought Watson the cane sword. In fact, Watson doesn’t use it as often as one might expect when they’re together, because Holmes always has their arms linked anyway. While this first started as a way to support his friend when the wound caused Watson’s leg to get stiff and painful, it has simply become an everyday part of Holmes’ usual tactile affection

Watson has always had a bad reaction to people dying under his care. During the following days, he is prone to “black moods” and dissociation. Holmes has learned that the best way to deal with this is to be a silent nearby presence, offering the odd murmur or reassurance. Once Watson reacts to his presence, Holmes will quietly ask things like “what do you see?” “where are you right now?” etc and work from there based on the answers

One of the reasons Holmes makes so much noise in their flat is because Watson warned both himself and Mrs Hudson that should they sneak up on him without warning, he has a natural ‘fight’ response and may accidentally lash out at them. Holmes almost got himself a black eye because of this once (he did trip onto his arse as well which added some levity) and has endeavoured to always make his presence known whenever possible

Related to the above: the one and only time Watson ever took the lead on a case ended with him reactively throat punching someone. Luckily it happened to be the criminal they were after but they both agreed it would probably be better for Holmes to take the lead from then on

Watson always feels most at ease when he has his revolver on him or within reach of himself. This is the reason Holmes tells him to bring it on cases. Another unspoken thing between them

He keeps tabs on the weather more studiously than he used to, so that he is always prepared when Watson’s injuries/chronic pain act up. He keeps Watson’s preferred brand of tea well stocked, is always sure they have coal for the fire, and, if need be, assists his friend in getting out of his coat/into his dressing gown etc without making any kind of fuss

Makes certain to bring blankets and a flask of brandy when doing long stakeouts as Watson is more prone to shivering. Also ensures that they always have a warm room to stay in when taking cases outside of London

While Holmes does eat more frequently thanks to Watson’s “medical nagging” the other reason he eats more is because Watson is also prone to forgetting about his meals and Holmes has found that eating together is simply more productive, mostly because it bolsters Watson’s mood considerably and his bright moods are rather infectious
