#and it's hard to find any scholarships online that are specific to my major so i'm running into the same shit again
Hello, sorry if you’ve already said this before, but where are you finding your folk songs? like a specific book or website? (i’m always looking to expand my collection and i have never heard of long lankin before)
thanks in advance :D
Hey!!
So originally I just got folk songs from ones I heard growing up, because my dad was fond of folk music & played me a number of bands I'm still fond of. A lot of ones I come across now are still basically from rabbit holes of songs I fell down with these.
However! If you're looking for more thorough catalogues of folk songs, the main ones you come across are:
Child Ballads -- These are only ballads. They were collected by Francis James Child in the 19th century, and they're all numbered, so if you've seen songs mentioned as like "Child 93" that's why, especially because a lot of these songs don't have consistent names. They're primarily collected in his 5 Volume book The English and Scottish Popular Ballads (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, Vol. 4, Vol. 5), linked there to where you can read it for free. The great thing about these is it will list all the variations of the songs he found as well as where he found them, with a little scholarly discussion of the song and its history on each. As someone that loves like. the process of transmission & the context of songs this is very appealing to me personally. It is old fashioned in its scholarship etc though.
Roud Folk Song Index -- This is a Much larger more modern index of songs: for comparison there are only 305 child ballads, whereas the Roud Index has nearly 25,000 songs (including all the Child ones). These also have numbers, so you'll often see something like "Child 93; Roud 6" where they overlap, or "Roud 2989" where they don't. Obviously because it's so big there's no book for them all, and likewise not as much commentary on individual songs. You can search them by number here, or by subject (!!!) here. The fact that this index exists is really cool, and especially that you can search it like that, although sometimes I find it a bit hard to get what I want, or have it layed out as clearly as in Child, I think just because it's so big.
This isn't really a major index like Child and Roud so you won't get it cited anywhere, but Mainly Norfolk is an index of folk songs mainly focusing on more modern recordings of the songs and their different variations. So for example you'll get a page for a songs and it'll tell you all the bands that have recorded it, and the differences in their lyrics, and what they said about the song on the back of the CD, etc. Which is fun for me particularly because I'm often accessing them through having listened to modern recordings and I'm curious about that.
You can also find various collections of broadsides and things (Roud includes a lot of broadsides I believe but if you want to look at them specifically), one of my favorites is the Bodleian Libraries online collection, which even has images of a lot of them I believe. This is fun if you like print sources.
And then a lot of these I'm just searching in Youtube as well, haha. You never know what old man recording a song he heard from his grandmother with 10 views and 2 likes you might find.
I hope this was helpful & answered the question! I will say I don't have any sort of expertise in this, it's entirely based on me just fooling around, so if anyone more knowledgeable than me has anything to add or any corrections to make feel free!

Any advice on resources for someone who wants to learn Japanese?
The best thing you can do is go to Japan and immerse yourself in the language. If you're a student, you have a few options.
1) JASSO Scholarship - this one is available to any student, regardless of your major and Japanese language level. They don't pay for you to get there, but I think they paid my tuition for the year and they definitely paid me a monthly allowance that was easily enough to live on. https://www.jasso.go.jp/en/ryugaku/scholarship_j/index.html
2) MEXT Scholarship - this one is provided by the Japanese government and it's more money than the JASSO, but it's also more restrictive. You have to be a Japanese major and you have to go to one of the schools they stipulate. They pay for your tickets to get there and a monthly allowance. https://www.chicago.us.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/mext.html#japanstudies
If you're not a student anymore, your best bet is the JET Program. It's open to any English speaker from any country and all you need is some kind of bachelor's degree (it doesn't even matter what it's in). They pay for your tickets to get there, train you, and help you find housing. https://jetprogramusa.org/
I've personally done all these programs so I can try to answer any specific questions you have about any of them.
If you're not ready to uproot your life and move to the other side of the world just yet, there are some books I wonder recommend.
Genki and Minna no Nihongo are typical textbooks used for beginners and are very highly reviewed.
You won't want to hear this, but kanji is an absolute necessity in learning Japanese and the best way to learn it is to do repetitive writing drills.
This book will help you learn kanji. Learning it sucks but I can't tell you how powerful you'll feel when you manage to memorize a new kanji. Or maybe that's just me lol
If you want good online dictionaries, this one is an old favorite of mine: http://rut.org/cgi-bin/j-e/dict you can only search in romaji, but you can look up words based on their beginning or even the ending of the word, which is quite helpful. The kanji lookup section is a bit clunky, but it has a lot of rare kanji that aren't easy to find in other resources.
Weblio has a great dictionary with lots of example sentences. The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no fuzzy search or looking up words based on their ending.
https://www.popjisyo.com/WebHint/Portal_e.aspx
This one is good for looking up kanji and adding popup hints to Japanese websites. It goes down a lot, but it's a great resource when it's working.
Basically just surround yourself with Japanese language as much as you can and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Japanese people really appreciate when you try to speak their language at all because they know it's hard, not like English speakers who expect you to be great at it. Feel free to ask me if you have any other questions and I'll do my best!

hello!
this isn’t the most timely of postings, but I want to make a series with stuff I wish I knew before applying for/getting into college. the series will be most helpful to lower-income american students, because that’s my experience! eventually I’ll have more stuff regarding STEM courses & tips for when you do start college. everything will be tagged #college help by raz. I’ll get a link for it up and running on my blog.
first off, probably the ugliest part of the process for me: filing the FAFSA, aka the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. I wouldn’t be able to go to college without it but the process literally brought me to tears.
if I save just one student some unnecessary frustration, then my job here is done! kal @promethes was my inspiration to do this, she’s running something with a similar purpose in a couple months so if you’re interested keep an eye out for that.
finally, if you’re trying to get into college/are just getting in and have any questions, don’t hesitate to send me an ask!
if you don’t want to open up the link above to a google doc, the text is available under the cut.
Things to know about the FAFSA:
It opens on October 1st every year. Be prepared to file it right when it opens, the aid is first come, first served.
If you’re going right into college after high school, that means you should apply on October 1st of your senior year.
If you missed the deadline, it’s open till June 30th the next year, but do not procrastinate this. Please trust me. Mark October 1st on your calendar, know it like your birthday. This is free money from the gov, don’t miss out.
You need to file for the FAFSA every year you’re in college, it’s not a one-and-done thing.
To file, you will need an FSA ID for you AND one of your parents (unless you’re not a dependent. If you’re living with a parent/legal guardian and they provide more than 50% of your financial support, you’re probably their dependent. That means they claim you on their taxes & get money back on their return). Make those FSA IDs here. Remember the passwords.
These are separate accounts that you’ll need to actually file the FAFSA. Also, if you have loans taken out they’ll show up here.
When you’re ready to do the FAFSA, use this official website. Other websites can charge you. They might not be secure and definitely won’t be any easier.
Sometimes, income is complicated or parents aren’t always on top of their taxes. Thankfully FAFSA wants documents from two years prior, i.e., for the 2020-21 school year they’re asking for 2018 taxes.
Try to check that those are filed away somewhere you can access before the Oct. 1 deadline. Make sure your parents know the government will pay for your schooling if you do this, and you usually won’t have to give that money back.
If your situation changed and you make a lot less than you did 2 years ago, contact your school’s financial aid office. Sometimes they can help with extra aid.
What documents will you need?
Your social security number
Your driver’s license, if you have one
W-2 forms from 2 years prior, and other records of money earned
Your (and/or your parents’) Federal income tax return from 2 years prior (form 1040, will be different if you’re in an American territory and not one of the states)
Any untaxed income records form 2 years prior, like payments to deferred pension & savings plans, tax exempt interest & child support
Records of taxable earnings from federal work-study from 2 years ago
Record of grants, scholarships, or fellowship aid that was included in you or your parent’s 2018 adjusted gross income
Any current bank statements
Any current business and investment mortgage info, business/farm records, stocks/bonds info
Documentation that you’re a permanent US resident or other eligible noncitizen
If you’re lucky, all these records will be filed in one spot or easily accessible. Try to access them early just in case.
If you have an idea what colleges you’re applying to, add them to the FAFSA when prompted. This will help you know exactly how much money they’re giving you sooner.
Because of the whole “parents not being on top of taxes” thing, I’ve always had to manually put things in instead of clicking the button that lets you manually import the info.
It’s frustrating and takes a while, but you will be able to do it. Thankfully the FAFSA has been getting better with the help available on the page (you can click an info button and it explains most things).
Still unsure what something means? Open a new tab on your browser and google it. You need to answer everything honestly, don’t take chances and take your time.
If you do get to auto-import, I suggest you go through the information manually to double check things if it lets you! I’ve used a similar tool with a tax-filing service and they can get some things wrong.
There are a couple “optional” sections. I fill them all out except for the section about assets, which I’ve consistently skipped. I always get max aid doing this, your mileage may vary.
When you finish, you’ll get a number for your EFC, or expected family contribution--how much they predict your family will have to pay for college. For example, if that number is 000, you’ll hopefully get maximum aid and your tuition will be paid for.
Sometimes, they can’t give it all in grants (money you don’t have to pay back), so some of the money will be made out to you as subsidized or unsubsidized loans. If you need them, take out the subsidized loans first, these will not gain interest until your grace period ends, typically 6 months after graduation.
I’ve literally never had success applying for random online scholarships and I applied to a lot of them. The FAFSA is so important if your family is low-income, those grants cover my entire tuition. The rest of my college, including room/board and a shitton of fees, is covered by merit scholarships directly from my school. I go to a large, in-state school, and suggest you stay in state if you can’t get into an out of state college that will 100% pay everything for you. Those colleges, not coincidentally, are also extremely hard to get into especially if you don’t have connections--think the Ivies, MIT, etc.
I recommend in-state because it’s almost always much cheaper than out of state tuition. Sometimes colleges have programs that will let you go to another state and pay in-state tuition at their partner school, if you’re desperate to move far look for those programs OR find a farther college in your state keeping in mind how good their program is for the major you’re looking at.
Also, fancy private schools might get you some connections or more famous speakers at events but the quality of your education won’t be much better, if at all.
Look for scholarships that come directly from the school you like.
Merit scholarships are money your school will give you for having good grades/test scores. How much money 100% depends on the school. Mine had a program where they had different levels of aid, and they calculated which level you fell into based on your high school GPA, ACT, and SAT scores. It’s worth trying to improve your scores on one of those tests if you know it’ll get you more money. These scholarships tend to renew every year/semester if you keep your GPA up in college.
For school-specific questions, contact the school’s financial aid office. For general questions, contact me! Send an ask to @razberrybi on tumblr.
Finally--if you manage to complete the FAFSA wholly or partially on your own, congratulations!! It’s not an easy feat. In my experience the FAFSA is literally harder and more frustrating than filing your taxes. Treat yourself for getting it done!

i’m literally at the point where i just feel like shutting down // idk if this will make you feel better or worse but I think that's completely understandable bc we're literally in the middle of a pandemic that has caused major disruption to our lives, and a lot of us have also either gotten sick or known people who have gotten sick or even passed away, and it's all unbelievably stressful. and so it's kinda messed up that society expects us all to function normally
like idk if hearing other people are in similar situations will help or not (I'm sorry if it doesn't, I'm ok at it but I'm not great with social stuff, I'm on the spectrum), but my life is a whole mess right now. I think I'm a couple of years older than you so we're similar ages (ish), and I'm also stuck at home with my parents right now, I'm almost entirely closeted and it's causing some issues atm, and don't even get me started on online classes 😭✋. I haven't even been logging in to half of them, I have a group project that I've not even began, I have a lot of extremely important exams in literally a month, and I have not done anything. I don't even know the content.
I went from being top of the class and getting As and A*s to being at the literal bottom of the class and getting Ds and Es during this pandemic. and it's looking extremely likely that I'll fail the year, which is like £10,000 down the drain that I can't afford, and will mean I'll have to change all of my future education/career plans and do something else instead. I haven't been replying to emails, I've been struggling with other mental health issues a lot, etc. I went from functioning before the pandemic to barely functioning at all. and I'm really dreading going back to physical classes next week. people on the spectrum have a hard time dealing with changes, especially major ones, but tbh, even a lot of NT people are feeling thrown off by all of these changes and stressed and having a hard time
so I think I can understand (sort of) how you feel, even though I don't know your specific situation and only you know exactly how you feel, and it just sucks the way that we all have to continue on like everything is normal. imo places of education and workplaces should be providing more mental health support and being a little more relaxed with deadlines and the amount of work expected, but we're in a capitalist hellhole, so 😞
the way I've been trying to get myself through it is just reminding myself that other people are struggling too bc sometimes you really do feel like it's just you and that everyone else is doing fine. and for me personally, it makes me feel comforted almost, knowing that there are other people who know how I'm feeling right now, at least to some extent.
and I just keep reminding myself that we're gonna get through this. like it's an actual nightmare, and it feels like it's going to last forever, but it won't. it's just a really rough period in our lives, but it won't last forever. it's going to settle down eventually, and then we can hopefully get back on track and try to find some sort of plan to move forward from any damage that's been caused.
and for me, I'm also trying to start putting a lot more time into studying by waking up earlier and making to do lists and daily plans, because right now I've been avoiding things for several weeks (if not months), but I'm trying to fight that instinct and work against it
I'm really sorry you're going through a difficult situation too, and I really really hope you feel better soon. I didn't know what to say really because I'm not good at this kind of stuff and sometimes accidentally make people feel worse (😭), but I am really rooting for you and for me and for everyone else that's finding things difficult at the moment, and I really do believe that we can all get through this. and at least there's a vaccine now and things are looking more hopeful on that end. good luck with everything and I hope things improve for you soon!
this will end, and it's completely ok and normal and understandable that we're finding this hard, but it won't last forever at least 🙏 that thought is the only thing keeping me (somewhat) together right now, but it's true, our situations aren't gonna last. everything is awful and a mess and really difficult at the moment, but we're gonna get through it! ❤️
thank you ❤️❤️ i’m sorry about your grades, mine have been slipping a little bit and one side of me is completely freaking out about it and the other side is really indifferent to it bc i’m so drained but that in itself stresses me out so it’s all a big mess that i really just want to get through. i’m not very keen on losing my 80+ average scholarship and disappointing my parents but we’ll see

Tips from my College Counsellor/Teachers
These are some handy-dandy tips from my college counsellor and teachers regarding medicine/science courses but can also be applied to more general majors/degrees:
Quick Disclaimer: Not all these facts may apply to you or your situation. It’s always best to directly ask your teacher and college counsellor whats best for you. This is just some food for thought.
1. It is competitive.
Medical school is highly competitive and often offer limited places, most colleges are like that as well. For entry to Oxford in 2019, around 23,000 people applied for around 3,300 undergraduate places. That meant Oxford received, on average, over 7 applications for each available place (https://www.ox.ac.uk/about/facts-and-figures/full-version-facts-and-figures#:~:text=Undergraduate%20admissions%20and%20access,applications%20for%20each%20available%20place.). You have to make sure you stand out, often grades were just the preliminary way of rejecting applications but in order to be more likely to receive the place you have to be an all-rounder (clubs, sports, cultural events, student leadership, community service, etc.). Remember: “Universities are always looking for a way to say no, not yes.”
https://www.ivycoach.com/2020-ivy-league-admissions-statistics/
2. Don’t be afraid to take a gap year
Travel, have experiences, volunteer at hospitals or doctors’ offices, take this time to beef up your resume, learn a language, learn a skill, take time to be sure that not only if college is the right choice for you but if the major you’re taking is truly the one for you, etc. Gap years are incredibly important if you personally don’t feel like you’re ready to jump into university. Not to mention it gives you time to mature and gain experience (referring to Point 1).
This incredible website has some more general ideas: https://www.oysterworldwide.com/news/gap-year-ideas/
These are specifically medical ideas: https://www.themedicportal.com/blog/5-things-to-do-on-your-gap-year-to-boost-your-med-school-application/
3. Finances can be tricky
Scholarships. Scholarships. Scholarships. There is no reason to start your adult and working life in debt, not to mention with a mediocre credit score. Besides financial aid, it’s always best to consider what you could do to lower your expenses when going to college (e.g. buying the textbooks second hand vs. brand new).
Oxford: https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/fees-funding/assistance
Cambridge: https://www.cambridgestudents.cam.ac.uk/cambridgebursary
Edinburgh: https://www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/financial-support/student-loans/usa/apply
etc.
You can always ask your college counsellor what scholarships are available/relevant to you, but often taking a look at the university sites gives you an idea of what they offer.
(some stats from Stanford: https://news.stanford.edu/2019/12/03/trustees-set-2020-21-tuition-expand-financial-aid-middle-income-families/)
4. Don’t always go for big universities like Oxford or Cambridge
Whilst I’m not encouraging in any way to not apply to these universities after all ‘you can never be admitted if you don’t apply’, I am saying keep in mind that you may be unsuccessful as admission rates are low and you should have several ‘backup’ options in case.
5. Hard work + extracurriculars all the way
Most top universities get thousands of applications each year, it is not only important to get good grades, but be a well-rounded individual. Clubs, Community Service, Jobs/Internships, Sport, Cultural, Student Leadership, etc. are all important things to have when applying for university.
6. Be organised but have fun!
Being organised is so important when it comes to applying to universities and attending class at university. Universities often appreciate those who are organised at all times, it also makes your life one thousand times easier! However, if you work too hard you could experience burn out! Don’t be afraid to take some time for yourself and relax.
9. Be careful of your online history
This may sound a little ominous, but be careful what you post online, it could come back to haunt you. This person:https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/nasa-intern-job-loss-twitter-homer-hickam-space-council-a8503241.html lost their internship at NASA because of a tweet, and this 17-year old: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-22083032 lost their job because of their tweets between the ages of 14-16. Take care what you post online, it may be the reason you lose your spot at a top university.
(This is Paris Brown in case you were wondering)
Thanks for reading! Please remember that these were just some general tidbits of advice given to me throughout my ongoing high school career and is food for thought. Everyone’s situation is different and it is always best to find out from a college counsellor/teacher what is best for you. Thank you!

Do you have any tips for incoming college freshman?
despite making it out alive, I’m not sure I’m totally qualified to give advice on college, but I’m gonna try anyway.
note: this is advice of an anthropology major (and creative writing minor, both of which I can get specific on) that used to dual major in history, so results may vary. science cores are VERY different than say, like, arts. no idea how those people coped. they seemed p chill, tho.
I also may be a little out of date. I graduated five years ago, so things may have changed idk.
- keep a map of the campus on you if you’re not purely online by the time school starts again. my school gave us a planner with one in it and I had that shit for all four and a half years I was there, even when I knew the campus better than my own neighborhood. you never know when you suddenly have a class relocated to one of the arts building and you’ve suddenly forgotten where tf that even is and class starts in 20 minutes.
- (god one time I was taking an astronomy class and the lab was out in the food forest and I was like THE WHAT NOW WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT WHERE THERE THE HELL IS IT and that was the night I learned we had a food forest after two whole ass years of going to the university)
- idk if this is great advice or not but 90% of the time when I had a class, I showed up early and sat in the hallway and went over whatever we were supposed to be learning that day. it helped me better pay attention than it would have if I had done it hours before, and I’ve never had a professor that waited for me to understand before moving on, because it’s expected that you understood before coming to class.
- AKA from my experience, you’re not going in there to learn, you’re going in there to review and ask questions on whatever your homework was. maybe you’ll learn a little more while in class, but most of college, for me at least, was teaching yourself via the readings and then gaining better understanding while in class. if you can, sit outside the class beforehand and brush up. it helps a LOT.
- take all the notes and see if you can’t find a method to take them well on YouTube. you’ll probably develop a method of minor encryption with shorthand if you’re anything like me and have professors that went super fast or readings that feel like a slow death, but, seriously. good notes mean everything.
- don’t worry about the other students, tbh. I worried a lot about the people around me for no reason, and, now that I’m out of there, literally none of it mattered in the end. college is a social thing, but don’t make it the priority over class.
- tho if they’re your partner for something and they don’t hold their weight, tattle that shit to the professor. if they’re a good professor, they’ll take the fact you’re pulling all the weight into the grading account, and hopefully help you.
- back up files in more than one place. trust me.
- email professors if you need help. it’s literally their job to help you understand what they’re teaching you. go to their office hours. I sure as fuck didn’t until I was a senior due to crippling anxiety and that was likely my biggest mistake I ever made. if they’re a bad professor and won’t help you, you have a chance to slam them in the end-of-class report thing they do.
- on that note, you probably will have a few bad professors. I certainly did. I even had to go straight to the dean after a mishap because I lost my scholarship due to a particularly bad one.
- PAY GOOD ATTENTION TO THOSE SYLLABI. highlight the fuck outta them. tack them to the wall where you’re see them everyday. also, probably, keep a planner. it’s probably the ADHD talking, but if I didn’t write things down in more than one place, I forgot about it. I learned this one the hard way, needless to say.
- if your school has a writing workshop place thing (like, where you can take your papers in and people will read them and help you fix them up) USE THAT SHIT LIKE YOU’RE GONNA BE KICKED OUT IF YOU DON’T. *especially* as a freshman, because you might think you know how to write a paper, but I can almost promise you for sure that you don’t know shit.
- enjoy yourself as much as you possibly can, especially as a freshman. you get a special n00b card when you’re a freshman, take advantage of that and get used to your new environment. go to the free things, eat as much free food as you possibly can. maybe skip drug parties, they’re kinda sketch. make friends, even if you might not keep them when you’re done. it might seem like hell while you’re in the middle of it, but I miss college so much, if only because I wasn’t the only one going through hell and the people around me knew that.
- good luck! you can always talk to me if you need to. I might not be the best help in any instance, but I’ll give it my best go.

Circular Glasses | Taehyung | Part 1
Genre: College!AU; So fluffy, I hate myself, but there’s also a lil angst
Pairing: Nerd!Taehyung x Popular.Foreign.Exchange.Student!Reader
Summary: You’re a foreign exchange student at University of Seoul in South Korea. When you arrived, you were immediately thrown into the popular and rich clique since you were an exchange student, and everyone wanted to talk to you. Your specific group of friends happen to be bullies, and have been bullying this nerd that you actually really like. You decide that it’s time to stop.
Warning: Mentions of Bullying; Mentions of a fight; Profanity; Ball grabbing???; Read with Caution~ <3
Word Count: 1,655
// Part 2 // Part 3 //
Author’s Note: Thanks for the request!! I am SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!! My heart hurts, ahhh. T-T SoooOOOooo, gonna be another parter, cause I have too many ideas. (: I hope you like it!! ^_^ @vincent-j-clint-renoir
Noticing people was something you had always done, you were pretty observant. When you moved to Seoul for college, people really liked you for god knows why, maybe because you were a foreigner? You were even considered the popular person that you see in movies, which was odd in itself, but what was more strange is the people you chose to hang out with.
Your best friend was… well… a bitch. Her boyfriend was a jock with a full ride scholarship, while the rest of your friends were just… well rude and kind of dumb…. You would never stand for their bullying, but you couldn’t stop it.
There was this boy that you saw pretty much all over campus. He was in a couple of your classes and you had talked to him for only a few seconds, finding out his name was Taehyung, but he seemed sweet. He had circular glasses that made his face look smaller, and blackish hair. He had a couple piercings in his ears and would occasionally wear a long, dangle chain earring. He wasn’t that bad looking, his glasses just immediately classified him as a nerd, which frustrated you.
You’d see him sitting in the courtyard with a couple of his friends laughing and smiling, which makes you smile. They’re all a bunch of, “nerds,” but they were all so very cute. Those three were also friends with a few popular kids, take the most handsome boy in school for example. He was a senior in culinary school, and he was drop dead gorgeous, everyone knew him, but he was really close with these guys. Another boy whose going into music, he could honestly be the president of a country one day, is also close with the boys, as well as a cold, distant boy whose also in the music school. You’ve never seen him smile until he’s with those three boys. The last one was a dance major, and Jesus his moves made you feel things you didn’t know existed. Again, everyone knew him and most people wanted to date him, so he was up in the social charts.
Since these four boys hung out with the nerds, however, they were also scrutinized by the rich and popular, which drove you nuts. Sure, they still had high popularity with the other cliques, but they were pretty much banished from the, “popular.”
You really started to notice the nerdy boy when he would work in the library.. The library is where you both really started to connect in some way. The first day you both sat in the library, you sat by yourself and he was just a couple tables from you, also alone. You found yourself occasionally looking at him, noticing the small details of his face. He was pretty attractive, and you could feel your heart flutter as you thought about him.
What you didn’t know was that Taehyung would be doing the same thing. He fantasized about dating you, he really liked you, but you would never go for a guy like him…. He was a nerd who liked to play video games in his free time, and studied all the time. He was a bit poorer than most people, his family were farmers, why would someone as popular as you want him…? But he certainly liked to admire you.
This continued, and you both found yourselves sitting near each other constantly. One day, Taehyung caught you staring, making your face flush in embarrassment as you quickly looked back to your computer, working for your online class.
Today was no different, you both sat in the noisier part of the library, where people could talk freely, and you sat only a table away from him. His two best friends, Jimin and Jungkook, who were also a bit nerdy, sat with him and they all enjoyed talking. Jimin had a pair of gold glasses with bright red hair, and Jungkook had circular, thin glasses with chestnut brown hair. You found yourself smiling at their conversations, it was about Overwatch, a video game.
“Hey, guys,” Namjoon said, walking over to the table and sitting down. You didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but you did anyway. You were fluent in Korean, for the obvious reasons of living there, but some people said your Korean was excellent.
“Hey, Joonie,” Jimin said, flashing a smile.
“Talking about overwatch again?” Hoseok asked, moonwalking to the table. You suppress a giggle as you force yourself back on your screen.
“Yeah,” Jungkook said, smiling shyly.
“How long did you three stay up last night?” Yoongi grumbled, walking over with Seokjin and plopping into a seat, head going onto the table and closing his eyes. The three hesitated, looking down.
“Till four…” Taehyung mumbled. You bit your lip in a smile.
“In the morning?” Seokjin asked, wide eyed. “Guys, come on, you need a good sleep!”
“We know, dad,” Jungkook grumbled, making Jimin snicker.
“Hey, Y/n!” Someone yelled, taking your attention away from the seven to see your best friend running over, smiling big. Her long black hair was trailing behind her, making her look stunning.
“Hey,” You replied, taking a sneak peek at the seven. They were watching you, a couple glaring while Taehyung looked sad.
“Why are you sitting over here?” She asked, eyeing the seven before looking at you. “Smells like a bunch of pigs!” She giggled, making you glare at her.
“More like the smell of a dog,” You mumbled, staring at your computer. “What do you want?”
“Ooh, someone’s feisty today,” Another girl said, walking over and sitting. The whole group was here, and you felt sick.
“Yeah, I’m trying to study, no distractions,” You replied, continuing to stare at your computer. The girl across from you shut it, taking it away from you as you stared in surprise.
“Hey!” You complained, staring hard.
“Come on, Y/n,” Your best friend said, flashing a smile. “Let’s go hang out! Have some fun, score some guys.”
“Did I hear guys,” Her boyfriend said, walking over and leaning down, kissing her.
“Come on, let’s move,” You heard Hoseok whisper, standing.
“Oh, hey there,” Her boyfriend said, smirking at them and walking to the seven boys. Looks like a couple of his friends followed, making me gulp and stare.
“Hey,” Seokjin replied, arms crossed. Yoongi was now staring them down, still seated, while the three nerds stared at the table, fear in their eyes.
“Why leave so soon?” The boyfriend asked. “We just got here.”
“Just back off,” Namjoon growled, crossing his own arms.
“What’d you say?” The larger man glared, making your heart sink. “Hey, you.” He pointed to Taehyung, forgetting about Namjoon, making him look at the jock with fear.
“Y-yes,” Taehyung stuttered, wide eyed and fearful.
“Come here,” He said. You took the chance to stand up, watching the scene unfold.
“Y/n? Sit down, enjoy the show,” Your best friend said, but you were too focused on the men before you.
Taehyung stood up slowly, making Hoseok grab his shoulder to stop him. The jock reached in between Seokjin and Namjoon, grabbing Taehyung by the shirt and pulling him forward. You immediately ran around the table, slipping under the jocks arm that held Taehyung so you were between them.
It happened with exceptional speed and once you were there, you placed your hand on the front of his jeans, gripping his balls hard, nails digging through his jeans, making him hiss in pain. You stepped forward, which made him step back. Everyone was stunned.
“I’m so fucking tired of you bullying these guys,” You growled. The jock tried to talk, but you squeezed tighter, taking your other hand and tangling it in his hair, pulled his head to the side as he whimpered. “Shut up! You talk when I tell you. I moved here not wanting any trouble, and I got the worst group in the bunch!”
“Y/n!” You best friend exclaimed, standing up.
“You’re a bitch,” You told her, before turning back to the man, bringing his head closer to you as you kept your other hand tightly placed on his balls. “I see you, or any of your friends, messing with these seven, I’ll kick your ass, got it?”
“Got it!” The jock exclaimed, pain in his features. You let him go, shoving him back. He tumbled backwards, laying on the floor as you stepped over him, looking him up and down.
“Looks like your ego is so big so it can make up for downstairs,” You said, looking to the front of his jeans than to his face. “cause honey, you do not have a lot going for you.”
You listened to a couple boys snicker behind you, turning around to see most of the boys still looking at you stunned. You ignored them, holding your hand for your laptop. The girl who took it gave it back fast. You grabbed your backpack, flinging it over your shoulder, when you heard the jock stand.
“What a cunt,” He growled, but it was a whisper. You sighed, turning around and walking over to him. You gave a bitter sweet smile at him before swinging your foot out and connecting in between his legs.
He gave a high pitched squeal, dropping to the ground and crying in pain. The seven behind you started saying ooh as if it hurt them too. The librarian walked over, stifling a laugh. Everyone knew these jerks.
“Miss Y/l/n! Leave this library!” She exclaimed, pointing to the door. Rules were rules, and you respected that.
“My pleasure,” You said, turned around and staring at your old group of friends. “I think it’s obvious, but in case it’s not, you all share similar fates if you try to talk to me, or these seven lovely men. Tootles!” You said, mockingly kicking your foot behind you and smiling, turning and walking out.

(HALE APPLEMAN. CISMALE. HE/HIM. THIRTY-ONE.) Hey, is that ALEXANDER TASH? I heard they’ve been in Salem for TWO YEARS and they’re working as a RADIO JOURNALIST. Last I spoke to ‘em they were pretty +INSIGHTFUL & PERSISTENT, but I hear they can be -PARANOID & SELF-CENTERED too. (tara, 28, she/her, est.)
CLOUDS OF CIGARETTE SMOKE; OBSERVATIONS SCRIBBLED ON SCRAPS OF PAPER; FINGERS RUNNING THROUGH TANGLED HAIR; A VOICE ECHOING IN A COLD, DARK ROOM; A WELL-WORN DECK OF TAROT CARDS
Hey, hi, hello! I’m Tara, and I’m so excited to be a part of this group. I don’t use fancy tags or too much formatting because I’m lazy -- but, like, what my posts lack in aesthetic charm I like to think that they make up for in at least passably decent substance? Here’s hoping!
Anyway, here’s my intro post for Alexander; some basic information can be found below the cut.
a pre-emptive TLDR; Alexander is an outwardly friendly man who likes talking to people (and, by extension, learning information and rumors), and he hosts a radio show every night under the pseudonym Asher Wilde to provide news and entertainment for the town. However, he’s a hard nut to crack in terms of actually getting to know him because he keeps his personal life to himself, and he finds it difficult to trust others’ good intentions. He practices witchcraft independently of any coven, for a mixture of purposes.
A lengthier explanation is below, if you want to read more details! I mostly wrote it out for my own benefit, lmao.
Background:
Alexander Tash was originally from a small town in Illinois. He was the youngest of six siblings and pretty much learned to keep his head down, especially because his parents were extremely conservative and he didn’t exactly fit their idea of an ideal midwestern son. He was too talkative and curious, and he was never the picture of heterosexual masculinity, which made him an easy target for ridicule, especially from his older brothers. The sibling nearest to him in age was close to him, but other than that, Alexander doesn’t keep in contact with his family.
He ditched town as soon as he earned a scholarship to study at a public university in Chicago. He majored in art history, but it was working a part time job at the school’s radio station that he really wound up enjoying, because he realized the power that an on-air microphone could provide. He didn’t bother changing majors at that point, but his voice became a nightly staple of the station, as well as at university events.
His popularity at university blossomed because of this, and Alexander ended up being pulled into a large circle of friends. He was swept up in this at first - but eventually learned that they were using him (and his radio platform) to promote their own self-interests. He finally realized that didn’t really matter - he got the best scoops of info from them that he could then turn around and investigate further to broadcast the next day.
After graduating, he worked a series of part-time jobs in downtown Chicago - a bartender, a personal shopper, a florist’s assistant - to pay the rent for his studio apartment while also doing part-time research for the art institute. It was absolutely miserable.
Alexander moved to Salem by a stroke of luck when their radio station sent an online call out for audition tapes from would-be broadcasters. When they offered him the job, he came to Massachusetts specifically for the chance to be on air again.
He lives in an old house that’s been converted into separate apartments, and he doesn’t have a car, so he either walks, bikes, or takes public transportation. You’ll usually find him out and about in town, except for in the evenings, when he works.
Profession:
He runs radio channel Salem 104.3 fm. The network management that owns this particular station has four or five other channels in town as well that all work in the same office building, and Alexander talked them into letting him do pretty much whatever he wants on 104.3.
He pre-sets a playlist of music for day and is only physically in the office from 5-10 p.m. He hosts a local news broadcast at 5 p.m. every day, followed by an informal talk show of sorts where he sometimes calls people to interview them, sometimes takes callers, and otherwise just finds interesting articles or bits of literature to read aloud during the breaks between songs.
He likes to find interesting news to report on, covering everything from local gossip to updates about town-wide news such as the murder. Whether or not the news is accurate is not really a concern of his, as long as it’s thought-provoking. He does try to provide all angles, though, and give as much information as possible, plus a healthy dose of speculation. (He wouldn’t consider himself a conspiracy theorist, but if the show fits...)
However: he didn’t want people in this town to try to manipulate him for their own interests, and he didn’t want people to censor themselves around him, either. So he disguises his voice on the radio (he speaks much more slowly and in a lower register) and broadcasts under a pseudonym (Asher Wilde), so unless someone listens very closely, they wouldn’t know that they’re the same person. Alexander doesn’t lie about his profession - if asked, he still says he works at the radio station, just in an administrative capacity instead of on air.
Witchcraft:
Alexander is a witch who is not part of either coven in town, though he’s heard that both of them exist, even if he doesn’t know all of the specifics. His magic style aligns more with the Witches of Requiem, to put him on the spectrum.
He started practicing tarot in high school (because why not?) and his interest was more of a casual hobby until he realized that it was always right, as long as he knew how to understand what the cards showed him. Then it became more of an obsession.
He’s met a few other witches to trade tricks and techniques but has never been part of a specific coven. His skills have grown, and he usually casts simple spells so he could be overlooked in public to hear better news, or spells intended to more easily allow him to gain others’ trust. He’s played around with casting protection spells on his listeners through the radio waves, but he has no idea if that works or not.
He has a vindictive streak against people who seem to wrong him; he’s successfully hexed four people before, non-lethally, and does not feel guilty about it in the slightest (two former hook-ups, an ex-boyfriend, and one customer, all of whom deserved it, in his opinion). But he’s not in the habit of using magic to harm others, otherwise.
He still trusts his tarot deck entirely, more-so than any human he’s ever met, and he’ll do tarot readings for people who have earned it, in his estimation.
Personality:
Alexander doesn’t share much about his personal life. He much prefers listening to others, and will always try to spin questions back on the asker rather than reveal information about himself.
He’s made himself quite well-known in the time he’s been in Salem, and he has never lacked for company. He has acquaintances he drinks with, people he parties with, etc, but he wouldn’t consider himself to have any “friends.”
That said, he’s also located at an odd intersection of isolation and vanity. He’s very self-centered, and he loves to be complimented, even if he doesn’t entirely trust sincerity.
Upon first meeting, he tends to seem self-assured and friendly. He’s not afraid to jump right in to conversation,
When you get to know him a little better, you realize that he’s much less of an extrovert than he would appear to be. If it weren’t for having to find news to report on, he would be perfectly pleased to hole up in his room. But ever by himself, he overthinks everything and doesn’t know the meaning of the word “relax.”
I can’t wait to start interacting with everyone else! I don’t use discord, but feel free to slide into my messages if you want plots, and we can work something out xoxo

{things that helped me as a c0mputer science major}
Hi! So I wanted to make a post sharing some of the stuff that helped me improve at computer science but some of this advice can be applied to any subject you're studying. Hopefully, these tips will help you if you're beginning your journey in CS at University/College.
*I'm still learning and I'm nowhere near perfect so there may be some things in here that you disagree with but that's okay because everyone has different learning styles. A lot of this advice stems from personal experience so I don't expect these tips to work for everyone. With that being said, feel free to reblog this post with your own tips :)*
"How do I even know if I want to do CS at University?"
Well, Comp-Sci is obviously not everyone's cup of tea but chances are if you are curious to learn more about the subject (either as a hobby or career) it's a good idea to take a couple of intro/beginner courses to see how you feel about it before you major in it. It may be discouraging to hear some of your peers changing their majors from Computer Science saying that it's either "too boring" or "too hard". Most likely they either majored in CS because of only the pay or because they thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. But have no fear! As long as you're passionate about learning this totally awesome subject and are persistent through the challenging areas, you'll do great!
*note: there is nothing wrong with changing your major if you find something that you love more and would rather dedicate more time to. Just don't feel like you have to change your major if you're not confident that you will be successful as a computer scientist due to your skill level because you will get better. I promise.*
1. [stay consistent when learning programming languages]
Imagine you want to learn a foreign language like French, Arabic, or Japanese. Do you pick up a book and read it once or twice a week and expect to be fluent in a couple of months? Of course not! You need to be consistent and set aside at least an hour every day to sit down and learn/practice your language of choice. The same applies to programming languages. You have to dedicate enough time outside of class to really develop your coding skills but make sure you leave enough time for your hobbies and to relax because you don't want to burn out. Consistency is the key. Remember, if you don't use it you lose it.
2. [ask a lot of questions in class!]
You won't believe how many times students have a question during a lecture but don't ask it, instead they tell themselves that they'll "google it when I get home." But the reality is that most of the time they'll be too tired or forget to look up their question on the web. Even if they remember, the answers they get on the web won't always fit their question. You may be doing this too often but are unaware of it. It's understandable if you have anxiety from speaking in the presence of a crowd or are too afraid that your question is too basic. Please don't feel this way! Most of the students in your class are in the same position as you, some are probably even more confused. When you ask your question in class you not only help yourself understand the concept better but you also allow the professor to explain the topic further which benefits the whole class.
*note: not all professors allow for questions in the middle of a lecture so take advantage of office hours to ask them questions you wrote in your notes.*
3. [make connections with your professors]
The reason why we're in college is to find something we love and make a career out of it, right? Well logically, one of the main steps of getting a career is to make connections with your professors! Businesses and organizations work with universities all the time; whether it's for on-campus events, internships for undergrads, or scholarships. Your professors know about these opportunities probably more than anyone else because they have to sit in meetings discussing them for hours and is why you should talk to them if you're interested in any of this stuff. Like I said before, take advantage of their office hours. Let them know you want to volunteer at events, apply for any internships, or apply for merit-based scholarships. Show them that you want to do more than just be a student and that you're ready to do more work for an impressive resume. I wouldn't have been able to get a fraction of the opportunities I did if it weren't for my professor's emailing me about them or writing letters of recommendation for me (which happened because I volunteered myself to work on projects even if it meant that sacrificing other responsibilities sometimes). In short: put yourself out there and get noticed.
4. [learn how to use online resources]
There's no avoiding staying up trying to work on a project that's completely boggling your mind. If you feel like you won't get it to work no matter what you do, don't worry because the internet is your best friend. It's no surprise the number of resources available on the internet is almost endless but what might surprise you is the number of solutions to the specific question you have. Yup, there are people out there struggling with the same problem as you and plenty of people offering different solutions. It's very important to remember that you shouldn't blindly copy/paste their solutions into your code if you don't how it works. You first need to identify what you did wrong and what their solution did right. This allows you to learn from your mistakes and prevents you from running into the same problems over and over again.
5. [learn how to use GitHub]
No explanation is needed, just please learn how to use it. You are welcome.
6. [avoid procrastinating!]
You already know this is a bad habit and if you don't do it, congratulations you can skip this part or you can continue reading. Procrastinating results in projects messily put together the hour before it's due (don't lie, you've been there) and professors notice it, don't think they don't. Procrastination is something we don't want to do but I'm not gonna sit here and say "stop procrastinating" because that won't work (it surely doesn't work for me), but I have some tips to avoid procrastinating.
a. Create fake deadlines for assignments that are actually earlier than the real due date! This tricks your brain to procrastinate according to the fake deadline but you'll still have time to fix and polish your assignment before the real due date. This works for me 100% of the time.
b. Work with your classmate(s) on assignments. We often procrastinate when we're working on projects alone because we are working at our own pace, which is usually avoiding doing it all week and cramming it the night before we turn it in. When you have a partner working on it with you it's required that you work at a steady pace in order to keep up with them and finish the assignment on time. You can either meet up with your partner after class or online. This tip works like a charm, it's motivated me to work on assignments that I've been neglecting when my classmates asked me "how did you do X in our assignment?" or "let's screenshare our code and work on it together!"
7. [explore different fields in computer science]
Computer Science is a very broad study that has many specific concentrations. Someone might have zero interest in machine learning but love cybersecurity and one who has no plans on learning how to create programs might have a passion for computer hardware. You need to explore different areas you feel like you might be interested in. Visit workshops on them or take a couple of classes at a local CC and see which you love the most.
Good luck with your endeavors in computer science! Hopefully, these tips help you and remind to never give up. You can do this! I’m sure I missed a bunch of stuff so share some stuff that helps you stay on track.
I want to make posts more often so please wait for them :)
also feel free to ask me anything you want to know and I'll answer it to the best of my ability <3

{Special} College!AU Irene
my other gg college aus: momo
major: literature
minor: korean history
clubs: edits the university webpage, part of a writing tutors club
sports: was a part of the gymnastics team, but left to focus on studying (the coach still wishes she’d join again)
irene has a nickname on campus, whether she’s aware of it or not - people don’t know, but everytime she walks by someone somewhere whispers to their friend “look, it’s the princess”
who gave her the nickname is unknown, wendy is sure it came up after someone anonymously posted a photo of irene in some online forum for the ‘top prettiest university students’
but irene tells her it doesn’t matter, she doesn’t like it anyway
especially not when she’s just trying to talk with a professor or one of her fellow tutors and someone mentions the nickname a little too loud
“isn’t it flattering though, people think you’re beautiful?” joy figures once, but irene just shrugs her shoulders
“i’d rather people respected me as a person, commented on my writing or on my work ethic. beauty isn’t everything.”
wendy watching her with wide eyes: oh my god everything you say sounds like a motivational quote. teach me your ways
but irene really does mean it,,,,she works hard - has been able to keep a scholarship even when her class load is over fifteen credits,,,,
she loves literature, and if people would take the time to know her,,,,they’d figure out she’s actually a bit of a nerd
loving everything from young adult fiction to hard korean classics
she knows waaaaaaaay too many historical facts off the top of her head, can name every district in every city of korea, and has specific planners for specific classes
all highlighted and neat, just like her personality
although her looks are known on campus, irene keeps to herself and her small group of friends
she’s interestingly enough friends with sehun - who has on many occasions had to walk her from one class to another because of nasty creeps who would try to talk to her
people like to rumor that they’re dating, but sehun and irene always laugh about it,,,,,sehun jokingly calls her a geek while she jabs back that he’s all face and nothing else
of course, as friends they’re just joking, but still - neither of them quite enjoys being the center of dumb college lies
unlike joy, who likes wearing fashionable clothing or wendy who has shown up to class several times in pajamas, irene has a comfy casual style
joy calls it “the gap mom” look
irene is perfectly fine with that, she likes her loose jeans and button downs
she has her own dorm room, which seulgi and yeri use as their own personaly therapist suite most of the time
but also irene has made it so cozy and comfy, lots of purple and fresh flowers. she’s an angel,,,,moving on
you’re one of those people whose kind of,,,unsure where you’re going in life,,,,
college is as much a learning experience for you as it is an adventure,,,,but adventures cost money so you find yourself needing some resume help
a friend of yours recommends a writing tutor they once had and you look down at the name they scribbled onto your notebook
“irene?” you pause, shifting your backpack over your shoulder “the princess?”
you vaguely know what she looks like, stoic and intimidatingly pretty
you wonder if it’s worth it to ask for her help ,,,,,,you could just submit your resume as is
but you decide to take the risk and head over to the library, surprised to see that irene is in fact there
even though she looks absolutely immersed in her work, you can see that there’s a group of annoying looking guys draped over their chairs just ogling her
some people walk by with their phones out, not even hiding their attempt to take photos
you cringe, thinking it must be hard for her to live like that
but again, she looks unfazed. a black curtain of hair falls elegantly across her shoulders and a laptop along with a neat pile of books keeps her distracted enough
trying to ignore all the things going on around her, you slip into the seat opposite her
“hi, are you tutoring right now?”
she finishes typing her sentence then looks, you see her look you over once - probably to figure out if you’re here for real or just to bother her
but then her gaze falls on the resume in your hands
“there’s a spelling error right there. i can even see it from upside down.”
she comments, one slender finger taps the part of your resume which reads “education”. you look down. you misspelled ‘currently’
shocked, you stare at it for a while more
irene continues typing, but then stops momentarily
“well, let me see the rest.”
you hand it over to her obediently, sweating a bit as you do.
pulling a pen out of her bag, she quickly gets to work
“mistake,,,,,,run on sentence,,,,,capitalize this,,,,,” she murmurs to herself as she works
you just silently observe, then look up to see that there are eyes on you know - it must be the consequence of sitting beside ‘the princess’
a good ten minutes later, irene has read over your resume twenty or so times, she hands it back
“edit it, then show it to me again.”
you gape at the amount of corrections one little resume has, but then turn to look at her again
she’s fallen back into her typing, flipping the pages of the open book beside her with ease
“i,,,,,,when are your tutoring hours?”
she motions to the schedule up at the front desk of the library
not once, did she hold your gaze for more than a minute,,,,
it’s mesmerizing
two days later, you’re back with your fixed resume. you don’t want to admit it, but you’ve chosen something nicer to wear and this time approach her with the intent that you’ll ask for help
but also,,,,try some small talk
unfortunately, all the staring and whispering gets to you before you can even sit down
irene, who just has her planner out, puts it away and takes your resume
she begins circling and correcting again, talking to herself
but when she hands it back - you stop her
“listen, i would like it if we could work on this together. but this place is ,,,,,,,,,,, stuffy. can we go somewhere else?”
irene looks taken aback, as if no one has ever asked her that
but then her eyes narrow suspiciously
“will we really only work on the resume?”
you realize that people have probably tried to pull things like this on her to get her into coming on dates
you redden in embarrassment, but nod,,,,,you don’t have any other intentions
so irene gathers her things, you two walk out of the library and you faintly hear someone go
“the princess took interest in someone? where are they going?”
you two decide on some place off campus, somewhere with less prying students
irene orders tea, without sugar and you get some coffee. you want to ask why her preference seems so,,,,,uncommon
but irene jumps quickly into explainging her corrections to you
surprisingly, her calm and clear voice make it all easy to understand
and after working together, you get a sense of what you were missing and what you should fix
irene takes a sip of her tea only after it’s gone cold, checks her watch and asks if you have anything else you need help with
under her eyes, a smoldering dark brown, you feel like there’s something hidden
she seems so automatic, so protected and alert
you feel kind of bad,,,,,,that she has to be so cautious because of the people around her
even here, where there are barely any kids from the university, random people - some twice her age - keep throwing looks her way
irene hyper focuses on you, refusing to meet their eyes
“i um,,,,,,,,im actually pretty bad at grammar -”
“i see that.”
you look at her, slightly hurt by the bluntness of her statement
she seems to read your expression and for the first time you see her face soften just a bit
“i mean, i see that it’s an area that needs work,,,,,,”
her voice gets a little more quiet “im sorry, i didn’t mean for it to come out that way.”
you pause, but then give her a warm smile
“it’s ok, i know it’s just the way you talk.”
she shifts, her hands neat in her lap
“what do you mean?”
you put your resume back into a folder in your backpack and shrug
“you always get right to the point. you don’t waste time. i think you’re always rushing to get things over with.”
irene’s face softens again, but this time you see her eyebrow twitch
she doesn’t look at you, just at the mug of coffee you’d finished
“if i waste time,,,,,,,,people get the wrong idea.”
it’s quiet between you two, the noise of other peoples conversations and the music in the cafe feels the weird empty void
you notice the details of irene’s plain shirt, the small silver necklace that rests on her collarbones - the slope of her nose and lips, perfectly aligned on her delicate face
then she gets up, nearly knocking over her tea, “if you need anymore help, the writing tutors have many different hours.”
she turns, heading toward the door to leave and you get the sense you’ve just been brushed off
“she’s scared she told me too much” you mumble, collecting your own things and getting up
on your way out, someone touches your shoulder and says “whose that girl you were with? is she an actress? an idol?”
you shake them off and can’t resist glaring, before you leave without a word
since your resume is done, you don’t have any reason to go to the library
but you can’t help it, you want to see irene
but you manage to keep away, long enough that it doesn’t seem creepy for you to stroll though the non fiction shelves
peeking over to see irene, helping another student with their work
but one afternoon, as you’re making your way to one of your club meetings - a familiar looking figure stops in your way
“so,,,,,,,i hear you’re messing around with the princess?”
wendy has her hands on her hips, a smug expression on her face
you shake your head “more like, she helped me with my resume and then told me to take a hike.”
wendy falls into step beside you and pokes your shoulder
“you’ve got it all wrong, do you know how shocked i was when i heard her say your name last night? she say it and asks if i know what you’re about, who are, blah bla-”
you stop immediately and wendy almost continues on without you, teetering backwards to ask what you’re doing
“she asked about me?”
wendy plays with the straps over her overalls and nods “crazy isn’t it? irene only cares about two things; her friends - which is me and three other girls and,,,,,,,,,,the history of the korean peninsula. yet,,,,”
her mischievous eyes flick up to meet yours with a grin “yet last night she was interested in you.”
with that, wendy turns on her heel and walks the opposite direction
she’s almost out of sight when you call out to her
“hey, do you know where -”
wendy smiles and cuts you off, “ill tell her to meet you outside the gym tonight at 8. don’t be late!”
in awe, you watch her actually disappear this time
,,,,,,,,,,did you just get yourself a date,,,,,,,,,,,,with the princess,,,,,,,,,
at ten before 8, you get to the gym - shocked to see irene already there
instead of her usual relaxed outfits, she’s wearing something slightly more feminine - an off the shoulder sweater and even small heels
she looks,,,,,,,,,,,beautiful under the lights of the gym and you almost run away because there is just,,,,,,,,,,,no way,,,,,,,,,,,you can even compare
but, you push yourself to meet her and when she looks up - you can’t believe it again - she looks,,,,,,,,,,shy
“wendy,,,,told me you wanted to see me here,,,,,,,”
you try to think of something cool to say, something to save your image but you just spill out “she told me you had asked about me,,,,,,”
now she really looks flustered, hiding her mouth with her small hand
you find it adorable,,,,,,,did she learn that in a movie????
it’s quiet again, but you don’t want it to be anymore - this is a once ina lifetime opportunity so you just go for it
“do you want to,,,,,,,,go out? on a date?”
irene has probably heard those words a million times before, but this time - she agrees
and you find yourself on cloud nine as you and her take the bus into the city
the only thing you can think of is a cliche movie, and you’re not sure if that’s going to be good enough - till the movie theater you pass is playing a documentary on the fifth reublic and irene’s eyes literally light up
“i’ve wanted to see this for so long! i just wrote a paper on this era!”
you see her clap her hands, asking for two tickets with such enthusiasm that you didn’t know she had
“i guess you like history?”
you ask as you two settle into your seats, the place practically empty due to the fact that it’s a documentary of all things
irene nods, a genuine smile on her face, “i love this country, so i devote my time to learning about it.”
she turns and you see that this irene is not the irene on campus
this irene,,,,,,is the real one,,,,,,the one who has passions and emotions and doesn’t have to put up some wall just some so creeps won’t ruin her day
the documentary is,,,,,boring for you - but you sit through it because irene keeps whispering facts to you and getting giddy, and her happiness is enough to sustain you
afterwords, the two of you eat at a local place - you notice that irene’s nails are even painted
small, fancy rings decorate her fingers and a golden pin keeps her hair from falling into her face
she,,,,,,,,,,,really did this for you
“can i ask you something?”
you say, and irene closes the menu, taking a drink of water and nodding
you completely forget what you wanted to order and lean a bit closer
“why did you ask wendy about me?”
she nearly chokes a bit on the water, setting it down and dabbing at her lips with the napkin
she doesn’t answer till she’s thought it over
“you said something, about how i don’t waste time and rush places.”
you nod, “and you said you did it because otherwise people would misunderstand.”
she seems nervous, hands playing with each other in her lap unlike usual
“what i meant was, if im nice and open people see that as an invitation,,,,,,for feelings. when im ,,,,, curt and blunt they just think im mean,,,,that im some,,,,,”
you finish the sentence for her - “princess?”
a weak smile falls over her graceful features and she agrees
“you’re someone,,,,,,,who figured it out. you’re right. im always rushing so people don’t have time to ,,,,,, feel anything toward me. or in any case, act on those feelings.”
you sit back,,,,,wondering then,,,,,,,,, “then what about this? this is,,,,a date after all. which means,,,,,,,,,,feelings at some point will be invovled.”
irene tells you that that’s true, but that’s ok,,,,,,,because this time she thinks she might have feelings too
“how,,,we’ve only met twice for my resume-”
irene shakes her head, “ive seen you around with wendy before. i know,,,,that you’re not all that interested in studying,,,,but that you like doing things your own way,,,,you have a freedom that i wish i had.”
the waiter arrives just in time to cut off the conversation at a good part
irene orders without hesitation, and you just say “whatever she’s having.”
irene laughs at this and you ask her why
“oh nothing, it’s just,,,,,you can be really forgetful can’t you?”
you don’t understand it then, but you and irene are two completely different people - your personality has parts that she wants and vice versa
walking back to campus from the bus stop that night, irene keeps her hands crossed across her chest, too scared to let the hang at her ides,,,,too scared that you might hold her hand
and not because she doesn’t want it,,,,but because she does
you say your goodbyes, and it ends without even a hug,,,,,,,
but to your surprise, the next morning as you’re walking to class - wendy beside you complaining about some homework
irene turns the corner and stops short when she sees you
before marching right up to you - determined look on her pretty face - and kissing you with the most passionate force you think she can muster
wendy’s dropped jaw makes irene smirk with some kind of victory as she takes your hand and pulls you away
“w--w--w---what w---w--was that for?!?!??!” you touch your lips and feel a burning sensation on your skin
irene shrugs, then after a while adds “to make sure wendy knows what’s going on.”
and finding about slightly jealous irene is how your relationship begins,,,,,and it’s wonderful because she only gets more interesting from there on
you see the real irene more often, nerdy girlfriend who reads ten books a week and can recite her favorite dialogues from memories
she laughs at her own inside literature jokes
her own history jokes
and you might not get them,,,,but you laugh along with her because it makes you so happy to see her happy
her walls don’t all come down in a moment though - there are a lot of late night talks on the steps of the library, near the river, or outside of her dorm
where slowly, but surely irene spills some of her best kept secrets to you and only you
sometimes you just sit beside her, keep your hands to yourself and respect her by listening
other times she moves her small frame into your amrs and you just hold her
she mumbles once that she has never known how comfortable the warmth of someone else could be,,,,,not until she met you
you stroke her hair, and she almost becomes a mess of a thin girl in your hands - delicate but still strong as she gets up and says something about studying for her finals
she is,,,,,literally the worrywart girlfriend you see in movies,,,,but in the cutest was possible
she always makes sure you have an extra sweater, bandages, water, etc.
“you need to drink at least 8 cups of water a day.”
“i need at least 8 kisses a day.”
“,,,,,,,,,,,,do you think that’s clever? go drink a cup of water.”
don’t think her courageous kiss in front of wendy is her usual means of pda
tbh,,,,she doesn’t like pda in the least. so the most you can do with others around is hold her hand under the table
just because irene thinks it’s the mannerly thing to do
this, of course, does not stop yeri from pestering you two to be more of a “couple” to “hug and kiss” till you both see stars
joy just aids the attack on you two by insisting that you guys start telling them all about your dates, her shrp eyes locking on yours as she mouths “you better remember your anniversary with her or i will GET YOU”
,,,,,,never before have you seen such a wild group of friends - you don’t understand how irene fits in
but seulgi gives you a big grin and goes “She’s the Mom.”
more than a chocolates and teddy bear person, irene is a new books and candles person
she once describes your smell as one of her favorites and you tease her about it until she pinches your cheek and tells you to cute it out - pink blush evident on her face
people think irene is gorgeous when she’s walking around, doing simple things
but people don’t know that irene is SUPER gorgeous asleep - it’s like watching a painting,,,,her long eyelashes on pretty skin - her cute parted lips
she once fell asleep on your lap after being up for three days on finals and you didn’t dare move an inch - you’d feel like you were disturbing an angel,,,,
not a fan of couple items, but did agree to get matching headbands at the amusement park, only to hide her face when you tried to take a photo together
you’ve heard the phrase “you’re the luckiest person on earth to be dating her” over a million times and guess what? you freaking agree
as she gets more comfortable with you and skinship, you notice she loves linking arms with you - which is cute and childish but makes you swoon either way
cooks for you, but gets nervous before you try it,,,,,,
and you make yourself eat everything, even if your full because you love her so god damn much
makes adorable little noises when you kiss behind her ear, then swats at you because “it’s ticklish!” but you know it’s because it gets her excited
you found it, one time after you guys were watching a sappy romance movie, that irene actually loves that kind of stuff - she literally cried during titanic
you guys will sometimes makeout, but irene insists the lights have to be off for even that ksdhfd
every now an then you leave flowers tapped to her dorm door, and you deny that it’s you but she ofc knows it’s you and it makes her smile every time
the amount of times you’ve tried to fight one of the creeps coming after her and irene has to hold you back while wendy is the one to tell them off has been,,,,too many to count
you know she doesn’t like being called “the princess” so you start calling her “the angel” instead and she still gets all fussy over it - but you can tell she likes it more
and she is an angel,,,,your angel
ill be doing more college!au ggs soon! also commissions are open~

Tips for getting through college w chronic illness?
Hey, friend!
Being in college as a spoonie is rough. Looking back, there are some things I would’ve done differently, but I made it through. Here are some tips (and followers, please feel free to add on!):
-Talk to your Office of Disabilities (ODS). You generally need to provide some sort of note from your doctor saying you require accommodations, but from there, you can discuss accommodations. If you’re undiagnosed, this can still be done—explain what symptoms concern you most to your doctor and they can write a note saying you need ‘x’ accommodation.
-Some helpful accommodations may include: an accessible dorm room (note that these may be single dorm rooms, but that may be a benefit if you need a lot of sleep/down time), early registration for classes (especially if your symptoms are worse at a certain time of day), extended time on exams, being able to sit when doing presentations (I’m prone to passing out if I stand too long, but if you think you’d use less energy standing, still can be helpful), having someone take notes for you (helpful if you have brain fog/chronic pain), take electronic forms of your books to class (especially if they’re super heavy books), etc.
-Talk with your professors. Some of them will want to meet about your accommodations so they understand your needs. Legally, you don’t have to tell them about your condition(s) if they ask. I was happy to educate them, but if that’s not you, just say ‘I’d rather not discuss it, thanks,’ or ‘I’m still figuring out my conditions myself.’
-In regards to your profs: if they challenge you about your accommodations, go to the Office of Disabilities. I had a professor ask me “how long CAN you stand???” It wasn’t her business, and she should have followed my access plan (list of accommodations) without questioning it. Baby Spoonie Emily was baffled and muttered something about only being able to stand for a minute or two without getting dizzy. I ended up sitting ON TOP OF A DESK in A DRESS because the prof insisted I need to look “natural.” This was BS and I should’ve gone to ODS. I will say this was the only prof who questioned me, thankfully, and you may not have this experience. Hold your ground.
-When you read, take notes. If you’re like me, I couldn’t remember details of what I’d read without it, which meant SO MANY NOTES as an English major.
-Socializing is part of college. I’m assuming you’re on-campus and doing things in person, so apologies if that’s not the case (though I’d suggest making sure you socialize as well if you’re online; volunteer, meet up with others online, etc.). A reason I mention this is because a) I had a single dorm room, which got me through college, but it meant I didn’t have a roommate and b) even when I lived off-campus, I couldn’t drive and relied on the bus, so I was limited in where I could go or what I could do. I isolated myself big time my sophomore year and got lowkey depressed. I had one extracurricular activity I did, and that was too much at times. If you’re lonely, reach out. Ask people to come to your place to watch a movie or TV show while you lie in bed, say you just want some company when folding laundry, or meet up when you’re eating lunch/dinner.
-On the other hand, don’t let others push you. Well-meaning friends have pushed me to go out, stay up late, and drink, and while I wanted to spend time with them, I knew my body would suffer. Though I do wish I had been able to do more in school, I graduated, and getting an education came first. Learning to listen to your body can be hard, especially when your able-bodied friends don’t always get it. Do your best to explain things to them (the Spoon Theory is very helpful in explaining chronic illness and my close friends will wish me spoons and it makes me want to cry)—you want to spend time with others, just not at the expense of your school work.
-Get a meal plan and/or if you’re off-campus, see if you can have your food delivered to your apartment. I had a meal plan throughout school, which was super helpful when I didn’t want to think about cooking, and but when I moved off-campus, I couldn’t eat every meal on-campus. There was a service that delivered groceries to you, and yeah, it was probably mostly for seniors or busy parents, but it helped me immensely.
-If you’re living off-campus, look at the proximity to stores (my apartment was a three minute drive to the grocery store, which helped until I couldn’t drive) and make sure a bus runs to your apartment complex/area! I befriended a bus driver and if he saw me on campus with my cane and knew I was headed to a stop, he’d honk and save me the steps to getting to that bus stop. He was the best. Maybe you can drive and will park on-campus (though this can be super expensive and parking is sometimes hard to find if you don’t have a placard, which is something I’d also recommend getting), but there will be days where you will want/need a bus service. Most big colleges have these, and if yours doesn’t, they may have buses specifically for disabled students. Look into your options.
-Look into scholarships and financial aid. There may be something for your major, and sometimes there are disability-related scholarships, too. This is something I wish I had done more of, even though it takes energy and time.
-Talk with a career counselor. I did this the semester before I graduated to ask about how to field questions if an employer had questions about why I had taken a break between graduation and getting a job. I graduated in May, spent time to focus on my health, and am looking for remote jobs now. The counselor was very reassuring and told me lots of people take breaks before applying for jobs, and saying you were spending time on yourself (without being specific about your health, which you don’t have to mention) and making sure you were prepared to work. Overall, this can just give you some peace of mind if you’re concerned or have any questions or just want some reassurance.
-Go at your own pace. You may not graduate in four years, you may have to take breaks, and all of that is okay. There is no “right” pace. You deserve to not sacrifice your health altogether for an education, and if that means taking a few extra semesters or years to graduate, that’s okay.
Best of luck! 💜

To JelloApocalypse, I love your content and I appreciate all the love and effort you and your team put in each video and podcast. I have a simple question to ask. Do you recommend going to art school to improve one's artistic ability? If yes, why? If not, what do you recommend instead?
Thanks!
If you go to a school for art you will most certainly improve your skills, probably by a pretty wide margin. I was a significantly worse artist coming out of high school than I was coming out of college, especially in regards to layout work and professionalism since my major was in Graphic Design. As a client now with an eye for these things, I can say that I absolutely would not have hired myself at the level I was after high school for pretty much anything. And my high school had a good art program, which I know is not true at all for the majority of American schools.
That being said, I don’t think higher education is by any means necessary for something like art or musical training, but it does offer a disciplined curriculum with hard deadlines to get artists used to work in the real world. Personally I am a very disciplined person and am always working on something, but I know that’s not the case for everyone, so that can have a lot of value for artists who have a harder time consistently practicing or outputting work.
It also teaches you better fundamentals, better techniques, how to critique, and most importantly gives you classmates and teachers who can give you honest feedback in real time. That’s not something you can often get outside of a classroom since most people either don’t have an eye for these things, don’t want to hurt an artist’s feelings, and/or have some level of bias towards you as a person before even seeing the work. Getting honest critique and learning how to take feedback and improve from it is one of the most important things you can learn in a classroom environment.
In regards to going to an art school specifically? ...Eh.
I have some mixed opinions on that. I can’t say for sure since I went to a regular university and majored in the Fine and Applied Arts, but from what I’ve heard from friends and colleagues, going to an art school specifically isn’t always a good idea.
Personally I think general studies are really important to keep up so you don’t become an idiot. Regular universities also offer supplementary courses that can really improve your chances at succeeding in the job market. For instance I took a business course Senior year that I’m shocked wasn’t mandatory. It was boring as hell, but it was a great subject to learn about in regards to freelancing, being a small business, and managing your own finances. That’s something a lot of artists I know are absolutely horrible with.
In addition to that, taking a wide variety of classes (marketing, psychology, business, history, etc) expands your horizons and not only gives you more things to consider in your work as an artist, but also makes you a MUCH more varied human and a better asset to a company or client.
For instance, my Graphic Design program had a lot of wiggle room for most projects. Almost every student had something else they were interested in that they were able to incorporate into their work. For me that was illustration, but I also had other classmates who were interested in the fields of photography, marketing, game design, computer science, UIUX, and way more. Because the university offered classes in ALL of those subjects they were able to improve their specific field of interests in a way that would’ve been much harder outside a general university. From what I’ve heard, most of my graduating class has secured pretty kick-ass jobs doing exactly what they always talked about doing! Myself included.
The other thing to worry about with a school that specializes only in artistic fields is that it’s not uncommon for students to be halfway through their sophomore year and go “...Y’know what? This isn’t for me.” If you’re at a school based in one study and you find out that you didn’t like that field? You’re BONED. You’ll have to hop around for awhile looking for other schools that are willing to transfer in the credits you’ve completed. That wastes time (and if you’re American a LOT of money). If you’re at a general university and that happens, hey, at least your credits can transfer over and maybe with a crunch semester you won’t even have to take another year.
That being said, there ARE reasons to go to art schools specifically. If you’re REALLY confident in your skills and you want to go to a high-ranking school to get into a high spot in the industry right away? Hey, go for it. From what I’ve been told that’s next-to-required for the Film and Animation industry. See: every single cartoon showrunner from the past 15 years graduating from CalArts. That’s only if you’re 100% certain though.
I also believe you can succeed without going to college at all for art, but you have to be damned disciplined and work constantly improving your own skills with no teachers. It’s far from impossible, but most artists I know simply don’t have the knack for that kind of self-discipline. You also won’t have the benefit of any education on your resume, but if you really fuckin’ gun it and produce a lot of quality content a good portfolio can still net you jobs.
tl;dr:
Going to any kind of university with a good arts program should vastly improve your skills, though it’ll often be very expensive.
Generally I think regular universities with art programs are better than going to an Arts College. I wouldn’t recommend an Arts College unless:
You got a REALLY nice scholarship.
You are absolutely 100% fully certain this is the career path you want to take in life.
The school you’re applying to is well-known school that feeds into the industry in a significant way like CalArts or the Rhode Island School of Design.
You don’t NEED to go to college to get better, especially with all the free resources nowadays that exist online, but you will need a very strong sense of self-discipline and initiative to succeed this way and it probably helps to be an extravert so you’re better at putting yourself out there to clients and getting jobs without the springboard of a university.
I think the best safe route for the average artist is going to a solid University with a well-known arts program while also using your free time to do the shit you love, like making stupid YouTube videos, because you’re never gonna get better at your favorite stuff unless you keep doing it, higher education or not.
Hope that helps!

hi i go to a shitty university. it isn't nationally ranked or anything and u know? it's just not great. not even average. i'm a journalism major. is it worth transferring for your senior year of college? how much does where you go matter on resumes and shit? because i feel like a huge loser. and i don't even know how to get an internship. i'm going to be a junior right now though.
Hey! I have a rather long answer for you, as knowing whether to transfer or not is a hard decision to make. But I also have a kind of quick summary of the main things to consider at the end my answer.
First of all, you’re not a loser for going to below-average university. There are so many factors that go into where everyone ends up for college. Many people didn’t have the chance to attend high quality high schools, aren’t in a good enough place with their mental health to perform well in school or on college applications, or lack resources to be involved in the kinds of extracurriculars that look good on college applications. People might not get the scholarships they need to go to better universities. Also, so many qualified people get their applications rejected from schools they would have thrived at all the time. So many people appIy to most colleges that who gets in and who doesn’t can often just come down to almost chance. I don’t know the reasons that you didn’t go to a different school, but I’m sure there were good ones. Also, academic success is not all the measure of a person’s worth!
Also. Where you go to college does not matter to most employers. All they care about is that you got a degree some *somewhere*. The only two exceptions to this are that employers tend to not want to hire people that went to for-profit colleges or exclusively online colleges. If you’re attending a for-profit college, transferring would almost definitely be worth it because they’re most likely charging you way too much money for an education that will be worth less than an education you could get for cheaper elsewhere. If you’re attending an exclusively online university, I would also consider transferring.
If your college isn’t for profit or an online university, I think it’s a harder decision to make. If you’re wanting to transfer purely because you’re worried your college will hurt your future employment opportunities, it almost definitely will not and I would just stick out these last two years. However, it sounds like you’re pretty unhappy there and might be considering transferring to get a better education for your own sake or to enjoy your college experience more.
Transferring senior year can be hard. Actually getting accepted as a transfer student to a better school than the one you’re currently attending should actually be fairly easy. As long as you have performed well in college, acceptance rates for transfer students are much higher. I think the biggest difficulty is actually that many colleges will not accept all of your credits from your old university. This might mean that you will have to take five instead of four years to graduate. If you rely on federal funding, you can’t get federal funding to pay for a 5th year of college, and most colleges stop offering aid after four years as well. If money is not an issue for you, great! If you’re unhappy, I would say transfer. However, even if money is an issue (as it is for most people trying to pay for college) there are ways to avoid this. I would really research the colleges you are thinking of transferring to because you can find colleges that have high rates of students who transfer to them & that are much more accepting of transfer credits. As long as you make sure and talk to people at your new college specifically about a four-year plan to graduate to insure that will be possible, you should be able to find places that you still graduate in four years. (And make sure to speak to people directly about this, or even better, get confirmation about which credits of yours they will accept via email. Do not rely solely on what their website etc. says because I know people who have run into problems with websites being misleading/their school not living up to what they say on the website.)
Another thing is that it can be hard socially to transfer as a senior. This isn’t to say that you won’t make friends (especially as most schools have an orientation for transfer students or include you in the orientation for freshmen, where you can meet people.) But if you have a solid friend group right now, this is something to consider.
Another thing to consider is taking a leave from your college if you are in the position to do so. (Just make sure that you won’t be penalized financially - I don’t know what the rules about when you can take a leave are for your college.) This way, you can apply to transfer elsewhere without having to worry about school on top of that, and you can spend two years instead of one at a university that is a better fit for you! Just keep in mind that transfer credits may still be a problem even if you’ve only complete two years of college, and so you may still want to be strategic about that when deciding where to apply to transfer.
In sum: If you attend a for-profit or exclusively online college, transferring is almost definitely your best option. If you don’t attend colleges like this & are merely worried that your college will affect your employment in the future, you most likely don’t need to transfer! If you’re really unhappy at your college and that’s why you want to transfer, it may be worth it, but you should insure that it’s a financially feasible option. If it’s not financially feasible, that sucks, but even though two years seems like forever I promise it’s really only a small part of your life & that you will get to do bigger & better things after college! If it is financially feasible, I would sit down and actually make a list of pros and cons of transferring just to insure that you’re making the right choice for yourself! It might also help to talk this over with an adult or a friend who knows you well and get their advice about the situation.
Also, about getting internships. It’s hard and overwhelming to try and get internships! But I have some advice. One thing is that most colleges have someone you can talk to that can give you guidance. I would look into that, as that could be a really helpful resource. However, if your school doesn’t have anyone like that, I have some basic advice.
I get really overwhelmed when applying for things, and that was something I had to overcome when applying for internships last year. To help with that, I did a few things. One, I set a small goal for myself, and said that I would only apply for three internships. (If you can apply for more, it would be good to because it raises your chances of getting one. Three is a very small goal, five is a reasonable one, more than five is great but not totally necessary. You know yourself best. Set a goal that is realistic for you and lowers your anxiety.) Next, I would schedule set times to look for/apply for internships. Then, it isn’t always this looming thing you have to do. If you start working on it early, do it in small chunks, and let yourself take frequent breaks, it’s so much better. I would actually write down a schedule once it gets to be around internship season. You can start over December break because some internships are already listed then and you don’t have school as well. But keep in mind that a lot of stuff gets posted around March or even later as well.
Since I was only applying for three internships, I made sure that the ones I did apply for were really good fits for my skills and experience, so I would make sure to hunt around a bit more if you apply to less like me.
Then - actually finding internships. There are a few ways to narrow down the vast amounts of internships you can find on the web. One easy thing to do is if you know which city or a few cities you would like to be in during the summer, you can search “journalism internship Chicago” or wherever and it will get you a lot less results than just wading through the millions of results you get for “journalism internship.” Also, if there’s an organization or a newspaper you really like, you can look on their specific web pages to see if they offer internships. (Again, look around December and again in March because they may not have anything posted now.) Also, if you have any teachers you like, they can be a GREAT resource for finding internships. I really recommend going into their office hours and just saying, “Hey, I really want a journalism internship this summer. Do you know about any you’d recommend me looking into?” Especially since you will most likely need to ask one or two of them for a recommendation letter anyway.
Also, don’t feel the need to limit yourself to a specifically journalism internship. You might find one that still focuses on writing skills, just in a slightly different way, etc. Employers don’t care if you have the *exact* experience. Any internship, really, will show that you have skills and that someone wanted to hire you!
A *lot* of people don’t get internships until the summer after junior year of college. And many people don’t get internships in college at all! They are great opportunities and you should definitely apply, but if you don’t end up getting any next summer, it really won’t be a huge deal. I have a friend who worked at Starbucks during the summers between college, and she’s doing something more related to her major now that she’s graduated!
Best of luck deciding what is best for you to do!Sophie

Why The Office Of Transformative Works is Amazing
I was playing around with the demographics on this account (because I do that when I’m bored) and I realized that some of you are really young.
Therefore, some of you may not know the utter hell that was fanfic and fan content before Archive of Our Own.
If you’ve never been on a livejournal account, I suggest heading to sapkowski-cafe which is an older site (about the Witcher books/games) that will give you just an idea of how unorganized live journals can be. It’s an unusually well done livejournal too, so keep that in mind.
And if you’ve never been on fanfiction.net I don’t know what to say to you. Try it. Just try.
If you’ve never been on either of those then I envy you. Truly I do.
Basically, this guide is for people who don’t know what “lemon” has to do with fanfic, because thanks to AO3 and the OTW, we don’t have to use that term anymore. Because it’s weird.
Terms to Know
OTW
The Organization for Transformative Works
A nonprofit organization run by and for fans to provide access to and preserve the history of fanworks and fan cultures.
AO3
Archive of Our Own
A nonprofit open source repository for fanfiction and other fanworks contributed by users. The site was created in 2008 by the Organization for Transformative Works and went into open beta in 2009. As of May 2020, Archive of Our Own hosted 6 million works in over 36,700 fandoms.
Fanlore
Also run by the OTW, fanlore.org is essentially wikipedia but for fandom. If you want to know about well known fanwork such as My Immortal or The Very Secret Diaries or terms like A/B/O or slash fic then fanlore is the place for you.
ff.net
Fanfiction.net
Basically, a really old site (that for some reason people still use???) for posting fanfiction.
Why are they important?
I use AO3 and OTW pretty interchangeably because, for those most part, they have the same goal: Protecting Fan Work
Although there are fewer today (I think), a lot of people used to be very much against the idea of fanfiction, thinking that it took away from the authors somehow. Just google “Anne Rice Fanfiction” for an idea of how one well known author tried to take all fanfiction down from the internet.
The OTW believes that fanwork (as long as it’s not for profit) is protected under the “Fair Use Doctrine” and they’ve lobbied the government to keep it that way. They’re a registered nonprofit and you can visit their “legal advocacy” page to read the official jargon.
It was actually started because of one livejournal post from 2007, written by the user Astolat (who would go on to found the AO3). They (and many others) were upset about a now defunct site called Fanlib, which was created by corporations who wanted to monetize fanwork. At the time, fanfic was still in something of a legal gray area, where no one was entirely sure if it was legal or not.
Astolat proposed that if fanfic creators didn’t band together to make their own site for fanfics, then it would be destroyed by corporate greed. They argued that it was, in fact legal to write fanfiction, and laid out the groundwork for a nonprofit that could host fanfics. That would become the AO3.
Overtime that project separated into five distinct parts:
The Archive of Our Own, which launched in an invite-only beta form on November 14, 2009, formally pledges “to serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture in its myriad forms. We believe that fanworks are transformative and that transformative works are legitimate.”
Fanlore, an open source wiki focused on preserving fandom history and collective knowledge
Transformative Works and Cultures, a peer-edited academic journal devoted to advancing fandom scholarship
Open Doors, a fanworks preservation project that identifies older fanfiction archives in danger of shuttering and being lost to time, then rescuing them by transferring their contents to AO3
Formalized legal advocacy for fanworks and other transformative works through the organization’s legal committee, which does things like filing and joining amicus briefs in cases impacting the fan community. The committee also educates fans on important laws and alerts them about changes to laws throughout the world that could impact fanwork practices.
AO3 Won a Hugo Award
(and why you should care)
You read that right.
I (and 4.7 million other fanfics) can officially say I won a Hugo Award. Will I put that on my resume? No.
AO3 founder Astolat had this to say about the award:
“All fanwork, from fanfic to vids to fanart to podfic, centers the idea that art happens not in isolation but in community. And that is true of the AO3 itself. All our hard work and contributions [as AO3 volunteers] would mean nothing without the work of the fan creators who share their work freely with other fans, and the fans who read their stories and … nourish the community in their turn.”
Fanfic Today
The way we think about fanfic today comes from the AO3. It’s turned from something marginalized, something that was assumed to be only for porn, terribly written, and tropey to something that has become a large part of mainstream culture.
Today fanfic is often seen as a home for marginalized people, where people can explore their sexuality, where new and upcoming authors can test their skills and receive feed back.
It’s also proof of who runs the world of online fandom. Remember, the AO3 was founded by primarily women who wanted a place to write non-heterosexual stories. It was women like Astolat who coded the site from scratch.
Something I think we should learn from today, in the time of Net Neutrality, is that the whole reason AO3 was created was because fans saw corporations trying to take their work, profit off it, or remove it from the internet.
Fun Facts
I’ve mentioned astolat several times in this post, would you believe that it’s the username of Naomi Novik, the NYT bestselling author?
I’ve published and read fanfiction on both ff.net and AO3, so when I tell you that AO3 is vastly superior, I know what I’m talking about.
The longest fanfic of all time is 3.5 million words long.
The term ‘fan fiction’ itself derives from the Greek fanaticum fictatas, which translates literally to ‘Writing yourself into Harry Potter’.
My Immortal (a Harry Potter fanfic) is often considered to be the worst thing ever written and you know what, they’re right.
One of these facts was a lie.
BUT HOW ARE LEMONS INVOLVED
(bonus round)
For those of you who read “this is for people who don’t know what Lemons have to do with fanfic” and thought “well I don’t know”: this is for you.
Lemon means sex.
Because fanfiction.net didn’t have a comprehensive tagging system, authors would include the world “lemon” in the summary of their fic so people could either find NSFW content or avoid it at their discretion.
One of the amazing things that AO3 has done is implement a sitewide tagging system with filters. That’s something that was unheard of in fanfiction before the AO3. Author’s often put trigger warnings, but you couldn’t remove anything from your search based on those warnings.
On AO3 you can simply “exclude” anything you like.
For example: there are 24055 works tagged as “the lord of the rings” but if I remove any listing that includes Frodo there’s only 20212 works (which tells me that everyone hates Frodo). Since AO3 gets new submissions everyday, those numbers will change by the time this is published.
That’s important because you can do more than just remove characters you don’t like. You can also remove any sort of tag you don’t like, from one of their official Archive Warnings (which is what they believe to be the most common types of triggering content posted to the site): are Rape/Non-Con, Graphic Violence, Major Character Death, or Underage. You can also remove literally anything else, including specific kinks you don’t enjoy like blood play or anal.
I’m using kinks just as examples because it’s what most people use the warnings for. You could also chose to remove “slice of life” or “no beta reader we die like men.”
None of that is something you could do on ff.net and it is SO AMAZING I CAN’T EVEN DESCRIBE IT.
