I really don't like how people are quick to jump on the Beth hate train when she does something wrong especially when Rio is involved. They have both done some not so nice things to each other but most of the hate goes to Beth I don't get it...

hey there anon! i agree with you…. to an extent.

i think this fandom has a tendency to jump on beth the moment she does anything wrong without taking into account the fact that she is an amateur, she’s new to this world, she doesn’t really know what she’s doing but she’s trying to put her best face forward. i don’t think it’s right for people to immediately go on the offensive where she’s concerned and forget that at the end of the day, she’s only human, and she makes mistakes, and that’s okay.

and to your point about rio - i think he’s become such a fan favorite, that sometimes people see him as being unable to do any wrong, and that’s not right either. rio is easy for us to love, and the chemistry between the two of them is what i think keeps a lot of people watching ( will they, won’t they, ooh la la! )… but rio is still a violent criminal, he’s still dealing in drugs and counterfeit money and is willing to “handle” a single mom for shorting him 100 grand. he thinks of shooting a man almost in the heart as an even trade for getting him locked up, and that sending body parts in the mail is an effective way to drag someone back after being shut out. he’s not really a Good Person™, despite the fact that he’s seemingly a good dad and clearly has a soft side.

but the thing is - beth isn’t really a Good Person™ either

i like to think back to the conversation between stan and ruby in the beginning of S2 when he’s making the couch up and says “normal people, good people, they don’t do what you did”. and don’t get me wrong, i do think ruby is a good person, i think she got kind of coerced into the life of crime thing, we see her protesting it around every corner, but she had the most desperate reason to rob that store ——the life of her child.

i think beth and annie fall solidly in the gray. and that’s okay ! i love that about them. they are not the most morally sound people, but they’ve been thrown into some pretty sticky situations in their lives, and have had to cope. sometimes that kind of thing changes a person. beth has spent so much time taking care of other people, i think she deserves to be selfish sometimes - and she is, and that’s also okay.

but you’re right in that it feels a little lopsided for people to always come to rio’s defense and yet always dump hate on beth when they both have a history of treating the other badly. the thing is that i don’t think either of them really understand how to navigate this thing going on between them ( obviously ) and so they’re both mucking it up pretty badly. but then they both deserve a part of the blame.

I watched By Any Means (six months after it aired) so you don't have to.

Here's what happened...

This post is for you @xbleeple and all of the other Major Crimes fans that couldn't bring themselves to watching the series finale. I'm making this recap for you so that you don't have to waste your time watching. Even Sharon Raydor alive couldn’t save this terrible excuse of an ending. Along with a huge side of salt to keep you entertained.

Provenza threatens to kill Stroh about five times per episode. To anyone that will listen including Mason. Despite that Mason still lets Provenza and Co. chase the case until the bitter end. How's that for objectivity?

Stroh has a partner a Hacker, who is a British version of Rusty. Seriously this could be Graham P. Martin's twin in a look alike contest. When people told Duff that Rusty was annoying he said hold my beer: I've written you someone that is about a million times worse.

They end up setting up shop in Brenda's old house and spy on the MC squad via a virus they sent to their cell phones. British Rusty Hacker Boy spends the majority of the four episodes spying on the squad while making hilarious comments like he’s at the movies. And eating popcorn...I really wish I was kidding about that...

What’s a movie without popcorn?

Emma Rios reappears for the sole purpose of being killed by Stroh. And @blossom--of--snow wonderfully pointed out that Emma is killed in the exact same way as the victim in her very first case. Wow what a cool thing to kill another major female character (who i know hasn't been on the show in years but still) and have that death be just as needless.

Provenza realizes that only he can keep Rusty safe (spoiler alert no he can't) because Emma's guards fucked up and let her be killed in her own swimming pool. So he becomes Rusty's guard and that comes into play later.

The squad think that Stroh came back to kill everyone connected to him because he was dying. Turns out that was complete bullshit and Stroh only wanted money. His mother who had Alzheimers or Dementia. Which means that power of attorney for her fell to her step son and he decided to cut off Stroh's mega supply of money. So in the end, Stroh's main motivation to kill everyone who was ever involved with him is solely about money. Money that he could just as easily stolen from somewhere else. Also he had no real reason to actually kill any of these people except for his step brother who was the one to cut him off. Talk about being dumb and letting everyone on a trail straight to you!

The squad learns that Stroh was always a psycho and his mother helped him cover up his first murder. The squad hears about this from Mrs Stroh who has dementia or Alzheimer's (I really can't remember which) and suddenly remembers everything that happened in her past just long enough for them the hear about this. We learn more about Stroh's past than we do Sharon Raydor's. And her monolithic monologue descends into a campy flashback that rivals American Horror Story at it's worst.

The squad feels sorry for Stroh because his mom was the only person he trusted ended up betraying him in the end. Also it's the reason why he hates women so much is because his mom betrayed him. Even though her continued relationship with him destroyed her marriage. Even though she helped him cover up multiple murders. And even though she betrayed him years after his first murder (who was a girl he liked).

Stroh kills some people including his stepbrother (but not his mother) and his own partner's partner (who is a prostitute because Rusty parallels).

Threatens that Rusty is next but never actually comes after Rusty. I honestly don't think that he ever really intended to come after Rusty. Rusty has nothing to do with his money and that was his main motivation.

Rusty tracks down a Stroh lead because both Rusty and Ricky (who make breaks in their case) are better cops than the elite detectives who have had decades of experience under their belts. You know realism bro! Provenza chases the lead and lets Rusty and Gus go with him and of course it leads them to Stroh.

Provenza goes alone to visit Stroh on some boat behind the house, while Buzz calls in a dead body they find. Leaving Rusty and Gus all alone, unattended so that Stroh or anyone else can find them and kill them. Great protecting Provenza!

Rusty sneaks away onto the boat because no one is babysitting him. Meanwhile Provenza finds Stroh. He is suddenly overcome with some common sense and decides against killing him. But then common sense leaves him and his dumb ass throws his hand cuffs to Stroh so that Stroh will willingly handcuff himself.

You know instead of calling for reinforcements and just waiting it out with a gun trained on Stroh.

Suddenly Rusty pops out of nowhere from some hiding spot. Because he got that that area before Stroh and Provenza. Because he knew where Stroh would be before Stroh knew. He shoots Stroh five times with no provocation what so ever. There is zero conversation between Rusty and Stroh. The reason why Rusty killed Stroh? Because he doesn't want anyone to know he was a prostitute.

Provenza does the 'right' thing (just like Stroh's mother did for him) and pretends that he shot Stroh. Even though Stroh was not killed with Provenza's gun. Even though Rusty has GSR on his hands and Provenza doesn't. Even though Provenza is a buck shot and would kill him with one bullet. Remember that Provenza killed Wade Weller from a few hundred feet away from him right between the fucking eyes. Oh and hey it's all okay because it turns out that Stroh had a knife in his boot. Because justification.

I.A. clears Provenza (no way in hell). Everyone *wink wink nod nod's* to Rusty that they know he was the one who killed Stroh and they are all totally cool with it. From Fritz to Julio. Totally cool you killed someone today, we're proud of you! Keep up that good work!

Andy is the only one who didn't pick up on Rusty having killed Stroh. And no one tells him that his step son is a killer. Maybe one day Andy will be killed by Rusty. I don't know what is worse. Living with a person that you don't know is a killer who may one day snap from trauma like that because shit like that doesn't leave a person. Or knowing that you couldn't keep your wife's son save from himself. Even though her last dying wish was for her kids to be taken care of.

Now time for everyone's happy endings. Provenza starts his tenure as (Lieutenant) in charge of Major Crimes as a criminal. You know trying to keep the world safe from all of those pesky criminals. Rusty starts his law career as a killer. He really made sure to make Sharon proud of him for being an adult who takes responsibility for his own actions.

Rusty and Gus get back together after Gus heedlessly harassing Rusty who wants nothing to do with him romantically. There is zero resolution (no conversation of a reconciliation or forgiveness) in their relationship. I mean hey, Gus as a cheater isn't that bad when you compare him with Rusty who is a killer. Also Andy is totally cool with them sleeping together, Gus asked him. And hey, their relationship is totally not toxic or anything. And they aren't bound to breakup about five times before they die but hey what is true love but dis-functionality?

Julio left them all behind for another squad because he doesn't want Mark to grow up without a father. Buzz became a real cop, but not because it was what he wanted. But because it's what Provenza said so. Wes and Cami are maybe a couple. Amy is as disgusted as I am about them in the deleted scene. Where they flirt over comparing serial killers to cereal. That leaves me scratching my head with: WTF happened to the writing?

Mike, Amy and Andrea got forgotten about and had no ending. Andy became the angry bitter widdower that Julio was and even takes over his desk because being right next to where his wife died is just too fucking painful. Oh and Ricky is actually Sharon's first born not Emily, Sharon said so.

Not to mention that Sharon was replaced by a vase of roses that everyone stares at.

Tsubaki figuring out Furuta's plan and so one night she snuggles up with him in his bed and keeps repeating something like "I don't want you to die" and he has a //realization// like "holy shit she really really cares about me". Lots of crying and cuddling on both side? If you don't mind writing the prompt, of course!

*Clutches my heart and my soul.*

Furuta has good word that Urie and Kuriowa will be appearing in his office tomorrow. Rio and Roma will be ready, and so shall he.

But tonight, sleep.

If all goes well, this will be his last sleep.

Furuta snuggles into bed, clutching the rubber ducky Tsubaki gave him “for good luck” before he left the garden. He curls up in a fetal position and drifts asleep. He dreams Tsuneyoshi recognizes him, and when he awakens at 3 am, for some reason he’s crying.

“Soutaaaaaaaaa,” whispers a voice.

“What?” Furuta shrieks and bolts upright.

“Bro!” His little sister - tonight of all nights - tackles him. “Souta.”

“I’m Kichimura now,” he protests.

“No, you’re still Souta to me. And to yourself.” Tsubaki snuggles beside him. “I need you.”

“You’re strong enough.”

“Am I?” Tsubaki’s eyes widen. “But you’re going to leave me. I don’t want you to die.”

Furuta squirms. “I’m not gonna die, kid. I’m Director of the CCG. I’ve got plenty of guards.”

“You want to die,” she accuses. “Don’t deny it! I’ve heard all your stupid plans with your clowny friends.”

“No you haven’t!” Furuta gasps.

“You taught me how to spy on people. Please.” Tsubaki starts crying. “I love you. I don’t want you to die. I didn’t have a father or a mother. I need my brother.”

“Tsubaki, everything will be okay.” If you die, you can be cured, you know.

“Not if you die.” Tsubaki pokes his nose. “I don’t want you to hurt people. I don’t want you to hurt yourself. Or incite people to hurt yourself, which is your plan. I want you to be happy.” Her voice cracks. “Why can’t I make you happy?”

Furuta looks stricken. “I …”

“Don’t lie, for once, Souta!” Tsubaki wails. “You think you’re all alone, but I don’t want you to be! I will care if you die. I love you.”

“Dad didn’t! Dad didn’t even recognize me!” Furuta yells back. A tear slips down his cheek, and he rubs it away.

“I’m not Dad!” Tsubaki shakes him. “Not everyone is Dad. Not everyone will hurt you. If you go, right now, to CCG and bow down and say I am a ghoul, the world needs help, I promise you many will curse you, but many more will help you. You could have been friends with almost all of them. You still can.”

Furuta narrows his eyes. “You stole that from somewhere.”

“Crime and Punishment,” she admits glibly. “But I’m your Sonja.”

“Tsubaki, Raskalnikov marries Sonja.”

His sister rolls her eyes. “Because she loves him. And he loves her. I love you, and you love me, although we have familial instead of sexual love.”

“You’re to young to know about sex!” Furuta shouts.

“Souta-chan, I read a lot.” Tsubaki nods. “You have to stay alive, or I’ll read all the worst things.”

“You will whether I die or not, and you know it.” Furuta pouts.

“Don’t die,” she pleads, crying again.

She wraps her arms around him, and Furuta allows himself, for one moment, to feel recognized. To feel loved.

Holy shit.

He’s done too much. He’s broken. He’s so broken. There is only death for him.

There’s only death for everyone, right? Furuta squeezes his arms around her and begins to cry. “What am I gonna do?”

“Hug me,” she responds.

It’s a start.

But like an ember, the possibility of a future begins to burn in his mind. By morning, he’s ready to face Urie and Kuriowa - and ask for help.

Part 1 First, thank you so so so much for your great insight!! Second, I actually really like S3 (so far) and I would love to hear your thoughts! Regarding BRIO, they are in a very volatile relationship and both are very stubborn and competitive and don't trust each other--of course they aren't jumping into heartfelt conversations. So, im fine with the show making us feel frustrated and like there isn't any progress. I agree that there is a flaw in not showing the effects of 2.13 on Beth's

Part 2 mental health and I would love to see that, but I'm actually ok with that also bc I want Beth to boss up and quite frankly, women are notorious for being too apologetic (although shooting someone might require an apology lmao). I suppose I also find it empowering that she isn’t divorcing Dean (sorry if sensitive topic) bc she is using the marriage to feed her fake image and in turn feed her true desire for crime. In addition, she is keeping Dean in the dark and taking care of their, just

Part 3: as he did in S1. I believe that staying in the marriage and using it for her purposes is actually pretty savvy. I guess I’m saying that while I want to see a more emotional beth for the sake of BRIO, I almost appreciate a female character who isn’t apologetic and letting emotions overcome her, but instead focusing on her business and what she really cares for—money and agency!! That being said, I recognize that it would be even more empowering if she could be emotional and be a boss.

I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to get to this ask, anon! It’s just been a crazy couple of months (well, year, haha). It’s great that you enjoyed the season so much! I actually did too, and like every season of Good Girls, have only enjoyed it more on re-watching. I think it’s definitely a show that benefits from being binge-watched, and while the weekly installments are fun, it can also tend to sometimes make it seem like not much happens, when really so much happens.

As for your ask overall, I agree with a lot of what you’ve said! I’ve broken my reply out into sections (I hope that’s okay).

Beth and Rio’s lack of communication in Season 3

Funnily enough, I actually think they communicated a lot in s3 – they just never had an honest conversation about what happened in s2. They didn’t talk about their intimacy, their break up, Beth’s arrest, the kidnapping or the shooting. It’s not really out of character for them – like you said, they’re stubborn, volatile and they don’t trust each other. They’ve also never had emotionally frank conversations with one another. The closest we’ve ever gotten was the fight over the dubby in 2.07 and the scene at the bar at the start of 3.04 (and even that one was founded on the lie that Beth had ever been pregnant at all).

That said, I actually do think it was building up to some sort of honesty. The fact that the season wouldn’t quite let go of Beth and Rio’s history, the hitman storyline, then them getting back into business together again as the FBI case re-opened - - something was going to happen, and I feel like we were building to a breaking point. Beth’s lack of emotional response to shooting Rio

This is a tricky one. I definitely would’ve liked to have seen a bit more from her, but I do love the moments we got – particularly both scenes with Beth in Paper Porcupine in 3.01. The breakneck speed this show moves at means that so much of that emotion was rapidly overwhelmed by her fear and then anger at Rio (which I talked about in this post) that we didn’t really get the chance to breathe (and frankly, neither did Beth).

Again, I do actually feel like we were building to a breaking point, and I don’t think the show was letting go of the events of 2.13 (I mean, gosh, Rio even brought it up again in 3.11). One of the things this show can do really well is bring things back in unexpected ways (although it can also let things go in ways I wish it didn’t). I am inclined to think though that the shooting was going to be the former and not the latter though, and that something was going to happen in the last five episodes of the season. And again, fingers crossed for us to see that in s4!

D-I-V-O-R-C-E

It’s such an interesting take to view Beth choosing to stay with Dean as something empowering, anon! Particularly because so many people actively view it as the exact opposite, haha. I’m kind of in two-minds about it? I agree that Beth’s more and more using Dean as both a cover and a chess piece to play, but I also think that that’s still being born out of the reality that Beth still needs Dean to survive. No part of her life is stable enough currently to support four children on her own, and I think that married with Beth and Dean’s long, complex history makes their stories hard ones to disentangle.

That said, I do think the story arc with Boland Bubbles is shaping up to move us in that direction narratively (which I talked about a lot in this post), and I also think the way Beth’s using him now is more deliberate. I mean, compare it to Season 1? Dean was back in the house because he was using and manipulating Beth through the cancer lie. Now, Beth holds a lot more of the cards, and is certainly exerting more control and power over Dean than vice versa, even if Dean also continues to be an unsupportive and philandering husband.

Beth ‘Boss Bitch’ Boland

Yes! I agree, anon! I love that Beth is unapologetic and ruthlessly committed to setting up her business too. She’s such a textured, complicated character, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing her evolve over the three seasons. I think some of the frustration around her character in season 3 though was how few touchstone moments we had with her. In s2, we got scenes that were a lot more revealing of the tumultuous emotions she was feeling – like her furiously stripping her bed after having sex with Rio in 2.09 and her spluttering debate with Ruby and Annie while they sort through pills in 2.06, or her destroying all her baking in 2.10.

We got less of those sorts of moments in s3, and I think more of those touchstones would’ve helped to root us better in her journey overall.
