It's like they are given the most blatant answer to a character romantic orientation and they actively ignore it. all the while all it takes is subtext for people to speak as if it is fact for a character to be any other sexuality.

(i hope this goes without saying that literally headcanon what you want: i'm criticizing the people who talk shit and can't accept other's people's headcanons. that's who i think is boring and annoying. there's complexity in Mizu's character in a lot of ways. I really cannot see how this headcanon is erasing any part of her identity. Please do feel free to correct me on this.)

I feel like ppl who hate on ppl who hc mizu as genderfluid are 1) boring, and 2) annoying. But most of all, they always use that dialogue between her n mikio, where she says she had to be one to enact her revenge.

Mizu is a person who is in an extremely sexist country, also being targeted for being mixed. In a way, being a boy was necessary. I also think that Mizu has found some comfort in being a man, in living like one. He prefers, in some ways, how a man is treated and is very comfortable being one not only out of necessity, but also because he likes it.

Now, just because he likes being a man, doesn't mean she also doesn't love being a woman. During the mikio arc, we all saw she was comfortable being a woman, she liked some parts of it even: being someone who deserves protection, who doesn't know how to throw a knife or fight for her life, who takes care of horses n cooks not just for herself; for her, being a woman means not doing what she has to as a man, which is fight for herself and enact revenge and live alone n all that.

At the same time, they're not totally a woman, nor a man. Because Mizu is not only about their gender, either man or woman: Mizu is a person who revels in both being masculine n feminine, but if they had the choice they would be both. They're part of both worlds (male n female) of edo Japan, and just as much as both worlds bring them immense amounts of pain, there's also a great deal of euphoria that they both give Mizu, and a mix of both is what gives them total peace.

I always think abt how effortlessly Mizu fought with mikio, since she was completely unrestrained and free there: both of her worlds were colliding and she fought in a way we dont rly see any other time in the series. Not only cuz she wasn't wearing her binder, but because all of her truth was revealed at the time, n she didn't have to hide any part of her then.

So yh anyways. Mizu genderfluid. And bisexual. And polyamorous.

lol aot has a lot of writing issues imo and some of the politics i find very messy and i think u can always come for it about the execution as well as how certain elements are integrated but i personally was always pretty ??? at some of the more extreme allegations i hear thrown at it in terms of its thematic core because it is hilariously and almost embarrassingly unsubtle about a lot of its messages. i also think people who try to read it as a 1:1 direct allegory for any conflict instead of something fictional that burrows elements from all over history (for better or worse) to convey its themes are gonna run into a lot of contradictions. and even the author was legitimately shocked at some of those interpretations (like early on the one claiming that the text was endorsing japanese militarisation while the titans represented china and north and south korea)

i think it should be engaged with critically and i think it fails at many things but im just glad that the 100% fascist chad eren dicksucker part of its fanbase was completely alienated by an ending that accentuated just how pathetic and childish he is

It’s always very weird to me how much hate IDW OP gets in comparison to characters that are as bad or worse. Like, if hate for IDW OP was just “he’s an asshole and does xyz things,” I would get that, but the vast majority of the hate I see for him is just calling him an asshole with no particular explanation as to why. More puzzlingly, I see “IDW OP is an asshole” coming from the mouths of people who simultaneously stan characters like Pr/owl (also a cop, committed war crimes, constantly manipulates and uses people) and Mega/tron (genocidal dictator, racist against organics, generally violent and fucked up) so like???

It doesn’t seem like the problem is that IDW OP is an asshole, it seems to me like the problem is very specifically that it’s Optimus. For some reason people are just absolutely allergic to the idea of Optimus being morally gray to match a morally gray continuity. Somehow Optimus and Optimus alone is a horrible asshole who doesn’t ever deserve to be acknowledged even though the same people have no problems liking characters from the same comics who are as bad or worse? And it’s quite disappointing because it seems like in that case, it’s less about IDW OP being an asshole and more about the fact that people haven’t actually read the story and don’t care about the context/reasoning for IDW OP’s actions.

That or they just want every Optimus to be a happy silly dad or a depressed uwu dad (but only depressed in a cute and palatable way, never depressed in a way that leads to lashing out and bad decisions and social isolation), so they hate IDW OP for not being the cardboard cutout they want him to be. i think desc is such an interesting world to explore in terms of how it can force a character’s complicity. in that it is quite literally canon that an entire world turned their backs on a population - whether eagerly, willingly, or unwillingly due to lack of power, influence, understanding, or plain indifference. like i think if theres a universe to dive into this, it’s desc. because if one were to create a verse or write characters from it and make it divergent so that they never supported the isle, or broke away from the kingdom of auradon, it . wouldn’t work. simply because doing so is kinda lowkey impossible in terms of the lore and also heavily reduces the damage that’s been done towards the isle residents, taking away the ugly realities of their struggles.
