The sight of your tears is one that Eddie Munson will never get used to. The way his heart squeezes to see you sad, and breaks when tears flow down your cheek.

You felt bad to make him worry about you but you weren’t sure how long you could sit in the driveway, drowning in your music, head on your steering wheel as tears dripped onto the old leather. 

You knew he would be in your shared apartment, waiting for you to get home and soon he would be calling, or searching so you had to go in. You swallow back a sob as you grab your bag, holding your jacket tight to your body.

Your hands shake as you fumble with the keys in your pocket, taking longer to open the lock as you normally would from the shaking. As soon as you close the door behind you, you drop your bag and jacket with a thud, loud enough to alert Eddie of your presence.

“Hey honey,” he called from the living room, nonchalantly. He was in an entire different world than yours at the moment, not that you faulted him for it. In fact, you’d rather him stay in his happy bliss.

You say nothing in response, scared your voice would break and give your emotion away. Yet your silence was a big enough clue, as you walked down the hallway.

“y/n?” Eddie called out from across the house, but you closed and locked the door behind you.

You slid down against the door, feeling the cool tiles beneath you. You pull you knees up to your chest, burying your face in your shaking arms. Tears ran down your cheeks as you let yourself unfold in the privacy of the bathroom.

A soft knock on the door echoed through the room “y/n, is everything alright…?”

“Go away,” you murmur, running your face along your arm with a sniffle.

You heard a small thud and the slight clink of his metal chain on the floor which signaled he was sitting on the other side. 

You sit together in silence for a few minutes until the slight vibrate of your phone reminds you of its presence. You debate whether or not to answer but curiosity wins as you pull it out of your pocket. It was a text from Eddie; no words, only a gif. It was from the video nearly 13 years ago, when she sang "You Belong With Me.” It was a simple, short looping video of Taylor Swift holding a notepad with the text “you okay?” written in black sharpie.

You couldn’t help but let out a laugh, even in the worst of times Eddie was there trying to cheer you up, even when you told him to go away.

You hear him stand, leaving for just a minute before you hear him slump against the door again. Out of the corner of your eye you see a slip of white paper being stuffed underneath the door along with a black marker.

Want food? It read.

You smile down at the paper, grabbing the marker.

What kind? You slide the paper back underneath the door waiting for a reply.

The paper came back to you with the word Pizza. 

Yes, you reply.

Well that’s good cause I already ordered it. 

You laugh as he slides a chocolate bar underneath the door, with another piece of paper that reads Peace Offering.

You stand, opening the door slowly revealing Eddie sitting up against the wall. He looked up at you with large brown eyes, showered with concern and eyebrows sad. He stood immediately, wrapping his arms around you tightly. His strong grip helped steady you as you crumbled in his embrace.

Tears fell off your cheeks and dissolved into the fabric of his long sleeved shirt. His dark hair tickled your face as he bent down to kiss the top of your head. 

His arms guided you to the couch, sitting you down on the cushion. He ran his fingers through your hair, pulling it back out of your face while you sobbed into his chest. He said nothing but just sat with you, running his hand along the length of your back.

You opened the wrapper of the chocolate, it crinkled softly.

“Are you… are you eating chocolate while crying?” he asked with an eyebrow raised, pulling back to look at you.

“Yes,” you pout, putting a small square of it in your mouth.

He giggled burying his face into your hair again, showering the top of your head with kisses. You let the chocolate melt on your tongue while he laughed, a sound you couldn’t resist as it lightened the feeling in your chest. 

“You are-” he had a deep, content sigh in between his sentence “so beautiful” the words rolled off his tongue and into you.

You snuggled into him, curling your legs up into him and leaning your head against his chest taking refuge in his beating heart. You took a piece of chocolate holding it up to his lips he gingerly takes it, smiling down at you with a charming grin as he bites down.

“Don’t ruin your appetite for pizza,” he mumbled into you, making his chest rumble against you.

He pulled the soft, fluffy blanket off of the back of the couch, pulling it over you both creating a wonderful safe warmth. He ran his hand along your back in the way you loved that he frequently did to put you to sleep. 

You spent the rest of the night curled up together beneath the tv playing your favourite comfort movies and shows. He spent the entire night by your side, only leaving a moment for when the pizza came. Even then, he returned quickly to wrap his arms around you and hold up the slices for you to bite into. Even when you went to the bathroom he sat outside the door, patiently waiting for you to return with an innocent look in his eyes.

“I love you,” he whispered into your ear as the evening turned to night.

“I love you too,” you whispered back.

Although you knew this wouldn’t be your last day of frustration and sorrow you knew he would be there for every single one. Always.

Ooof. Maybe spuffy? That met me at a very formative time of my life, and I didn't expect it to become so canon (as opposed to like under a spell etc) and I think that experience really reshaped my brain 🤯🤯🤯 but fundamentally faves questions are immoral thus this is a very rude question.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I hope I'll finish all of them, and do intend to! I'm not sure I'll ever write the hilarious abortion fic tho.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Mm, a love of language/interesting prose. A love of brevity/somewhat chiselled sentences. A love of editing/willingness to improve. Interesting stories. Dialogue, tho brio get little bc theyre annoying. Characterisation!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Well I violently dislike plot. I don't feel super strong on creating original characters. I'm slow! I'd rather let things be confusing than beat readers over the head with info, which I think can be detrimental. I wouldnt say my descriptions are super strong, though I think they've improved a lil. Sometimes there's too much internal monologue at a go which breaks up the pacing of an eg dialogue scene (though again think that's improved somewhat). My love of planning and love of pantsing are at constant war lol, I get grumpiest abt stuff not having been established earlier and thus needing to state things which couldve been well demonstrated. Blocking, sometimes. I love short stories and oneshots but I'm apparently prone to writing long fics & continuing things into series which I consider a real weakness, lol.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'm not against it in principle, I've read a lot of books which contain a lot of eg French or Spanish (often untranslated). We've got access to Google translate or w/e right? I do appreciate it when translations are provided bc lazy (and I think Ao3 does poss let you do hyperlinked superscript?). I feel the same way abt it in fic as in other media I think -- if you're happy for it to be a bonus to those that understand and everyone else needs to work to figure it out, I concur. If you think it needs to be understood, then providing translations (even if just as notes @ the end) makes sense.

But I also think pls don't write it via Google translate... If u don't speak the language/don't have someone who can help u translate it, don't write dodgy shite Spanish or w/e 🙈 not everything needs to be literal dialogue u can just say 'he explained to his grandmother abt the change in plans' or w/e I swear

...o wait I'm guessing the q meant me as a writer not reader 🤦 I don't think I've done much of it? Altho I do always seem to imply that every character speaks French, a language I don't really speak so who the hell knows 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

2022 End of the Year Fic Review

The wonderful @underragingwaves tagged me, thank you love! (I put the longest part under a cut)

1. What is your AO3 account? for the vikings fandom it's my pseud vikingstrash.

2. How many words did you write total in 2022? 117.233 *whistles* not too bad if one considers what a year it's been.

3. How many fics did you publish in 2022? How many multichapters vs oneshots? 39 one shots and 2 multichapter. All Hail the One-shots!

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic? Longest was Kings of Kattegat with 39,878 words and the shortest Story as old as Time with 119 words.

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic? Most popular (going by subscriptions, hits, comments, kudos and bookmarks) has to be my VBB entry Kings of Kattegat. Personally, the most self-indulgent fic I ever wrote.

Least popular is Sweat. I guess it would be a lot more popular if it wasn't hidden behind the AO3 log in. And also if it had full on smut and not just teasing, but oh well, I like it and in the end, that's all that matters xD

6. What fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would? Huh, that's a weird thing to think of, I never really give it much thought if my writing is going to be popular or not so that thought of a fic not "perfoming well" is kinda...absurd to me. Anyway, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Greedy Gods? While it does have a lot of hits and a couple kudos, it's weird to me that for a fandom with so many people claiming they want more fic about the female characters and how much they love Aslaug, there was not as much love for it as I would assume. Must be a me-problem.

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would? Basically anything I wrote for D. P. - Deserter Pursuit. I didn't think there would be enough people in said fandom to read, kudo and comment, but was positively surprised.

8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022? For Vikings: Valhalla, Daughter of the Fearless. I loved giving Altöra more background story and this glimpse of her relationship to Freydis. It was fun to write.

For Vikings, Strung up, Tongue-Tied. I mean....sub!Hvitserk restrained and dom!Amma playing with him? Ubbe observing, just being present without doing anything besides kissing Amma? Yeah, I loved that one. It's full of tension.

For D. P. - Deserter Pursuit, Pity. My dumb ass actually made it a published WIP because there was more to tell and I liked it a lot. Only the Gods know if I will actually write more though xD

9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022? Well, for someone who couldn't be paid to read other people's fics, I managed to read quite a lot in 2022 for free. Mind boggling, I know. But here go my favs:

Gotta start with Not A Fairytale by underragingwaves, because...have you read that fic? It's really a fun read (for those who like crime stuff which is basically exactly what I love) and promising a bigger universe underneath that small treat she wrote.

Will totally never stop making hearteyes at Twice Now by ritual-unions. Love how Kara (heh) is so clumsy and unable to function in the real world and the way Ubbe basically just watches and smiles to himself, before his eye-roll moment that will make him intervene. I also love myself some good hurt and gosh, this is gonna hurt so damn bad at the end and I will love every second of it.

There were a couple to pick from and it was hard to choose, but when someone can make me read an Ivar fic, then it says a lot about that persons writing skill. The Mental Tyrant by grimeundglow deserves so much more love than it has been given.

Reactions Of Your Kind by Ulfrsmal was my fav of him in 2022, but only because I didn't really get to read the rest of his fics xD I'm sure there are more gems in his list, but this one stood out to me because...Hvitty and Ubbe 🥺

A Prize of Battle by Mercurygray, is absolute Emma/Canute goodness and Idk what else to say, because this womans writing skills are beyond anything I could muster, so hearteyes from afar will have to do for now.

For Mince Pie by emma-ofnormandy, another author that captures Emma and Canute's relationship so well and it's so fluffy, I wanna hold it really tightly against my chest.

And last but not least The Queen of Kattegat by northernxstories! I will remain deeply impressed by how effortlessly she managed to pull me into her story and made me read it in one go, even though it's 12k of words xD It was such a new way of approaching the characters and it's brilliantly written. An absolute treat in 2022.

1. Do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike?

hmmm i'd say probably a healthy mix of the two? i have to plot/outline something (even just a pwp oneshot) before i dive in, i am definitely not the kind of person who can fly by the seat of their pants. however i also really like striking while the iron is hot, bc i feel like the words usually flow the fastest when an idea is fresh. so i'll at least try to ride the wave of dopamine and outline an idea in full as soon as i get it 😂 writing the actual thing usually takes much longer!

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

honestly i don't even know half the time 💀 sometimes a friend will say something to me and my brain just zooms, sometimes it's partially based off my own life, sometimes it's based off something i read or watched or heard in a song. i just have a very overactive imagination lmao!!

6. What’s the last line you wrote? & 7. Post a snippet from a wip.

i'm combining these two together bc the last two lines i wrote are funny and not really a spoiler for anything so here u go:

The whole night gets fuzzy around the edges when Matthew storms into the kitchen and abruptly changes the music to Bad Bunny before making everyone do a round of tequila shots for seemingly no reason at all. For a while you lose Tiffany to the magnetic power of his body rolls, and you can’t exactly blame her.

13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

not while i write, no, but music is a huge part of my inspiration process! i just can't focus while listening to anything with lyrics (even if they're in a language i don't understand lol). but here are some songs on the LDOMLT ch 11 playlist 👀

18. Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?

i do, though sometimes i can get WAY too carried away with it for something that truly no one will give a fuck about lmao. LDOMLT has definitely had the most research put into it - on the music industry, on the grammys, on los angeles and seoul, on visas 😵‍💫 so much lmao

21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

oneshots for sure! i've loved writing my series but it's certainly a labor of love. it's a much deeper commitment required!! and i'm a commitment-phobe 😅

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

i'd say 9/10 times i have a working title while i'm writing the fic, and that usually ends up becoming the title, tho sometimes i change them last minute (it's sweet was almost called that's life, for example 👀) - and i usually steal my titles from songs, tho not necessarily always songs that inspired the work in question (for example it's sweet is a liz phair song but it.... is very off-brand for that fic 😂)

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

i always joke with my friends that i like everything about it except writing, lmfao. i LOVE outlining, plotting, brainstorming, and i LOVE editing and polishing. but i fucking hate drafting so much 👹 WHY CAN'T THE WORDS JUST PUT THEMSELVES ON THE PAGE

35. What’s your favorite fic you’ve posted?

it might be the shape of your body 🥺 i'm really proud of that one!

43. Is there a trope or idea that you’d really like to write but haven’t yet? - already answered this one!

49. What fic of yours would you say is the best introduction to you as a writer?

honestly two in one is a good candidate lmao. like consensual but filthy sex, a reader who asks for what she wants, some queer-adjacent shit, member characterizations that i hope you might find accurate 🙆‍♀️ and a smidge of dumb humor. let's go with that one!

i'm gonna cop out and say check out my fic rec friday tag 💜 i read and review stuff once a week! and don't feel like doing it right now 😂

78. What motivates you during the writing process?

honestly, i'm not always motivated 🤷‍♀️ but i try to show up anyway, regardless of how i feel. the hardest part for me is always getting started, so i do my best to push through that initial block and try to get words down anyway. worst case scenario, if i go back and truly hate them, i can delete them. but i don't think that's ever happened!

you. you right there are Exactly why i felt the need to write of princes and princesses. people like us who never get to see ourselves in fic and get so thrilled when we do, it's just so important. thank you so much for reading, and you're welcome.

as for your request, i think you may have misunderstood my offer ^^; im not opening requests for new fics, but simply to rewrite that of princes and princesses specifically for other identities since the story itself is about being queer and being seen. if that's still what you want, i could rework it, but it might take me some time since im quite busy with work and writing takes a lot of my energy- but if you're requesting something new/different, i will have to politely decline.

that being said, as far as genderfluid readers go, ill definitely be writing more of them in the future as i am genderfluid myself! i just chose to make the opap mc a binary trans man because it was easier to tell that kind of story that way, especially in a oneshot. my mc in my main series what goes on in neverland - im on mobile rn at work so cant rly grab the link but my masterlist is pinned - features a masc-leaning genderfluid mc, although he's yet to have a chance to talk abt the intricacies of his genderfluidity bc it simply hasn't been relevant to the plot so it's more just transmasc nonbinary. but i am in the process of planning one monster of a longfic with an explicitly genderfluid mc who travels between dimensions and changes genders in each one, from body types to pronouns and labels, so stay tuned for that! it'll probably take a while to get there though.

as far as ace/aro readers are concerned, im sorry to say i probably won't be writing any, as i primarily enjoy writing romance and sexual relationships, so without that it's just not really the kinda story i write. sorry to disappoint ^^; that being said, i am developing a concept of asexual taehyun in that genderfluid mc longfic - it'll be multifandom - who's sex-positive and enjoys bdsm for non-sexual reasons but still engages in sexual acts. that's probably the best you're gonna get unless i decide to make a side character ace or aro, but yeah, sorry.

I do have a few WIPs and I will give little summaries of each under the cut!! They are in order of when I will most likely finish them)

 Under the Northern Lights post-canon PWP oneshot - I’ve had all kinds of little snippets pop into my head of Inuyasha and Kagome’s lives together within the UTNL universe, and I always write them down. Most of them are smutty because I can’t seem to help myself hahahaha. This one is the most fully-formed idea that I had a few months ago, and wrote down a whole rough draft in my phone. It actually takes place on New Year’s Eve, which is why I was hoping to have finished UTNL well before the end of the year so that I could have posted this follow up oneshot on/around NYE, but OH WELL. It’s mostly just porn anyways, but includes a tiny hint of plot that actually ties in with the epilogue! (you will see a reference to “New Year’s” in the epilogue, so just know that you will eventually be getting to read the whole story 😉)

The First and Last - Modern AU that could either be a long oneshot or a multi-chapter depending on how long it ends up being. Currently it's only about 4.5k words, but still super rough so it could definitely end up being multi-chapter. I'm so excited about this one because childhood-best-friends-to-lovers is one of my all-time favorite tropes (Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable were my first ship before I even knew what shipping was...), and now I'm FINALLY going to have a story of my own using that premise! This story is inspired by the summers I spent as a kid at my grandparent's cottage in Maine. It was in a very tiny coastal town, and was on a quiet street with a few other summer homes, so I would see the same kids every year and we would all hang out. And I may have had a smol crush on one of the boys that I would see each summer😏. So this story is InuKag in a very similar situation!! I love this one and can't wait to share once I go back and fill in all of the middle parts 🥰

Sometime Around Midnight - Modern AU multi-chapter based on  a song of the same name by The Airborne Toxic Event. I actually came up with this as my first multi-chapter AU back in January/February before UTNL randomly forced its way into my brain and took up my entire life for the rest of the year. I'm still really excited about this one, and have a whole elaborate backstory planned out, but am actually really stuck on how I want the plot to go past the initial couple of chapters (which starts off as pretty much just a retelling of the lyrics of the song). It won’t be super long, probably only 3 - 5 chapters, but I really can't decide on an interesting enough way to end it 😆.  I'll figure it out eventually, though!

The Girl at the Rock Show -  Modern AU enemies-to-lovers fic that I wrote for @goshinote’s birthday back in October! I was only able to get it to the point of being a super rough draft (that was still over 6k) by the time of her birthday, but I promised to get back and finish it eventually, which I still plan to do! I debated whether to publish it, since it’s very much written for Jane and her interests with lots of inside jokes/references lol , but I figure I might as well share it because someone else might enjoy too! The basic premise is that Inuyasha and Kagome are both working at a concert venue and do not get along at first. But....✨sexual tension✨is there and so begins a FWB type of situation that of course turns into something more...

A couple of canon-based very short oneshots - I have ideas for little missing scenes I would’ve loved to see in canon every so often, and have a couple of rough drafts written. One is my version of a little follow-up to the almost kiss in TFA episode 18, and the other is a post-canon idea of how InuKag’s first kiss might have happened based on the manga where they never kissed inside the jewel! Both are short and sweet and very fluffy. I started off with most of my ideas being canon-based, so I like to return to that as kind of my bread and butter after writing a lot of AU. I just love love love Inuyasha and Kagome’s dynamic in canon, and I consider it a fun challenge to write within that world and keep them as in character as possible!

Apart and Together (very tentative title, pls ignore lol) - This is actually the first fic I ever started writing after finishing the series! It is basically just my ideas of what might’ve happened during the 3 year separation, and how their reunion would have gone. It’s actually already like 20k words hahaha, but I started it so long ago when I knew nothing about writing, and have shifted my views on certain things, so it will require a lot of editing/restructuring to get it finished. Eventually!

Untitled Multi-Chapter epic-style long fic based on Darling in the Franxx - Post-apocalypse AU where demons (led by Naraku) have taken over the world and humans are forced to live in small areas under constant attack. Inuyasha and Kagome (and others) are paired up on a mission to gather fragments of the Shikon Jewel, in an effort to stop Naraku from getting them first. They don’t get along at all at first, but learn to trust and rely on each other over time, although they grew up as part of a selection of kids that were raised to be soldiers so they don’t know much about humanity/love/etc. Also there is a twist! The premise is loosely based on the anime Darling in the Franxx, minus the sexual robot stuff hahaha. This will probably take me forever to write tbh. I have a loose idea of the plot, but nothing really written so far. I want to write the entire thing before posting, so it might not end up getting posted next year but we'll see!

That is ALL of my WIPs that have actually been fleshed out into full story ideas! I have a handful of random scenes jotted down in my phone that could potentially become stories if I thought about them a little more, but I don’t like to have too many open WIPs at once, so I’ll try and get a few of those out before trying to come up with anything else.

TTM Discussion and Questions:

When Rayllum had that big fight at night on the rock, my heart broke into a million pieces. Specifically because i felt terrible for Callum. My precious boy tried so hard to be supportive, despite having his own grief to process. When he said “i know how you feel” and Rayla lashed out with “do you?!” I thought to my self ~oh no Ray dont go there~ and then she did, negleting his pain and deeming it less important just because he knew what happened to his parrents. In his case i would argue it’s worse knowing that the father of the one you love is responsible for one of their deaths, and i think Callum had every right to bring it up. Personally i think she crossed a line and it was surprising because it felt out of character. Especially because Rayla is usually really kind, loving gentle, carring, considerste and aware of his feelings in theese type of situations. It’s not like i dont understand why it happend, nor do i expect either of them to allways act perfectly, that would make their relationship superficial. Strong relationships need honesty. She was sleep deprived and there was some truth to what she was saying, so maybe it slipped out. My issue is that it got ressolved too quickly. The next morning they both apologised and everything was fine for some reason.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you agree? Do you disagree? With what and why? And could you please tell me everything is gonna be ok because ive been a mess ever since i read the graphic novel🥺

It’s almost funny, because when @thosefiveadoraburrs and I would talk about the events we felt preluded our fic “if time is money,” a prequel oneshot we talked about a lot was the idea of the fight Rayllum would get into over how/when to go after the coins before the start of the fic. We never wrote it — and probably won’t now with TTM out — but our discussions hit upon two key things.

1) We actually predicted the “you don’t understand” exchange. We figured it was something more along the lines of Rayla snapping “You don’t understand” her desperation and grief, and Callum firing back “Oh, I don’t understand what it’s like to loose three parents?”  

2) We also figured the overall argument would hit upon another main theme TTM has, of Rayla wanting to rush into something and be self sacrificial and Callum — who at this point in the fic universe was already her fiancé — being beyond frustrated with it, because didn’t she get it that they were in this together?

I’ll get to why we predicted both of those things later.

As for the fight on the rocks, it’s painful yes, but in my opinion? Completely in character. When Rayla lashes out, it’s not the first time she’s done so on this specific subject. Nor is the first time Callum has used commiseration and empathy to try and sit with Rayla in it.

Rayla has always had a hard time dealing with her negative emotions — specifically in relation to her own pain — in a healthy way. At first, she would just try and keep them completely bottled up and lashes out at attempts to get her to open up, usually to try and get the asker — Callum — to back off, even when she needs to talk about something (1x06, 3x04). By TTM, she’s much better at being open and opening up about most of her emotions, and simultaneously never tells Callum explicitly about her nightmares.

And now perhaps onto the more delicate reading of TTM, which is to say: in TTM, Rayla is operating from a deeply traumatized perspective. This is not to excuse any of her behaviour — I also think that Callum, honestly, does absolutely everything he could to support her in TTM and his “One of the people you’re so worried about killed my stepfather” is his one singular slip up; Rayla, comparatively, has many more. Like the final panel lie, or the times she lashes out. Callum also has his own trauma (I’ve been waiting for them to address his own self loathing tendencies and abandonment issues for a while was saddened but unsurprised to see them come back in TTM.) 

But Rayla shows signs of PTSD that Callum does not, and I think they’re worth examining. Namely, in this case, one of the most PTSD symptoms being bursts of irritability. Callum does his best to be reassuring that Rayla is safe — Viren is dead — and that he understands her grief. He’s trying to empathize. But Rayla is too caught up in the differences and in her own head to be able to engage with that. That’s not Callum’s fault, and Rayla’s healing is her responsibility, but quick escalation and deescalation of irritability and anger is a symptom of PTSD.

It reminded me a lot of “The Southern Raiders” from ATLA, when Katara lashes out at Aang and her brother: “I knew you wouldn’t understand” and “Then you didn’t love her the way I did!” even though Aang can understand Katara’s loss (in many ways, she can’t understand his) and it’s in regards to Sokka’s mother, too. But Katara can’t — or won’t — see that they’re only coming from a perspective of concern of her overall wellbeing, because they’re telling her things — that maybe hunting down the man who killed her parent (sound familiar, now?) to get revenge isn’t the best idea — that she doesn’t want to hear.

And Callum — like Aang ( “I do understand. You’re feeling unbelievable pain and range. How do you think I felt about the sandbenders when I found out they stole Appa? How do you think I felt when I found out what happened to my people?” — always tries to empathize.

Especially when he’s arguing, like in the screencap above, for her life, or trying to get her to open up. But again, Rayla doesn’t take too kindly to those sorts of things. 1x09, 3x03, and 3x08 are the only times in show where Rayla really opens up with zero prompting or external factors pushing her to do so. The below is her more normal (in show).

Which again, shows the marked improvement in TTM with her opening up readily, continually, about so much of how she feels, like when Callum asks her about staying up late again, or sits with her on the rocks at night, or in the final conversation they share in TTM. Rayla’s determined nature to be independent and the one risking her life for Callum or others rather than the other way around (1x03, 1x05, 2x07, 3x01, etc.) is why @thosefiveadoraburrs and I predicted this would eventually come back with a vengeance, because her self sacrificial nature and hardship with opening up stem from the same desire/fear, which is the “need” Rayla has to be self sufficient on her own. Even though she’s really not, most of the time, and even when she is fine on her own, she doesn’t have to be. 

But she hasn’t learned that yet in full, and I’ve written a lot of metas (found on My Meta page) and 20k+ fanfiction of how she could learn that lesson and why she inevitably will. TTM does not portray her self sacrificial nature or her lie in a good light. It’s recognized as a character flaw. It’s a plot / emotional conflict I’ve been waiting for since 2x07 (much like how I was waiting for 3x04’s since 1x06), it was always an issue I knew she and Callum would have to overcome, it’s been naturally baked into their arcs from the beginning, so yeah, they’re gonna be just fine. I’ve talked about their patterns in conflict resolution that TTM’s conflict easily falls under, I’ve talked about the parallels it has to past conflicts between them and how those were also resolved. I can’t offer much more than that.

I will, however, contradict that Rayla is always sensitive and caring for Callum’s feelings. She is, 99% of the time, just like he is 99% of the time for her. But the parental aspect is both something they struggle with. One reason I figured Rayla would snap “You don’t understand” at Callum even back in January 2020 was because of 1x05, from a rather throwaway line. 

Rayla says she wishes her parents were dead because they’re cowards... to a boy she knows has already lost at least one parent. And Callum is already an orphan, soon to be twice over (once he learns about Harrow). But what does Callum say in response to this pretty harsh, somewhat insensitive statement?

He just asks to understand better. Which is also reflective of their first meeting in 1x02, where Rayla declares that humans attacked the Dragon King unprovoked. Now, Rayla is wrong — they attacked because of Sarai’s death — but Callum doesn’t correct her. He very much could! But he doesn’t. He just counters her points and introduces a new angle instead.

TTM’s conflict on the rocks is basically a combination of 3x04 and 3x08. Callum has also never been someone who needs direct apologies, and Rayla isn’t someone who outright apologizes very often. 3x08 is also resolved in a similar manner. Both of them say some pretty nasty  things to each other — “Honour? ‘Redemption’? It’s just pride!” and Rayla’s own statement above — and neither of them apologize. Rayla isn’t defensive when he approaches her again, Callum is very calm and even if she thinks what he’s saying must be impossible, Rayla hears him out and Callum knows exactly how to reassure her that what he’s saying is real.

I actually think 3x08’s conflict is way more unfair to Callum — again, he’s arguing why she shouldn’t stay at the Spire and basically needlessly die at age 15 for her parents’ mistakes — than their fight in TTM. (I don’t mean ‘unfair’ in that Callum’s opinion is wrong or isn’t validated by the narrative; it very much is — but I’m always impressed he doesn’t lose his shit more on her in that scene, tbh.)

And I think the “quick” resolution speaks to the fact that Callum and Rayla are so far past the usual steps of conflict resolution because they’ve been through so much together. They always know, at this point, that they love each other and that they have each other’s best interests at heart. 

In the aftermath of their fight, they’ve both resolved to do better. Callum broaches things first, making it clear that he has both an issue with her behaviour and is also trying to open the floor for discussion: “So, uh, I didn’t see you this morning” which is what tipped him off in the morning that he’s “really messed up.” 

Rayla immediately apologizes, making it clear that he didn’t mess up nearly as badly as he thinks. She explains where she went instead, then navigates the awkwardness after mentioning Runaan all on her own. She talks about Allen, lightening the mood, and then asks after Callum. When he mentions magic, she expresses interest, “Oh? More research?” because she knows he loves moon magic and learning. She has no idea at this point that it has anything to do with their fight or that he did it to try and help her.

And in the following conversation, Callum extends the compassion he momentarily lost sight of, by offering, “I hope you find out about your parents. And Runaan,” being the one to broach that subject after Rayla just talks about Viren. And Rayla accepts it.

After they’ve both expressed yet again that they’re precious to each other: “I’m not going to risk both of us” and “The second it looks like you’re in danger I’m jumping in after you.”

I’ve also talked before about how in s1-s3, Callum and Rayla love each other more unconditionally than they’ve ever been loved before in their lives, in some ways — as well as their awareness of it (“It doesn’t matter what you did before, I just want you to be okay again” and “I don’t care if you’re crying, I’m here with you [...] I know that, and you should know that”). 

And if anyone can understand what it’s like to say something nasty you don’t mean when your temper gets the better of you, it’s Callum. They’ve earned a certain amount of bygones and silently understood apologies and makeups.

2021 Year End Fic Review

for my answers, i’m only going to count posted stories as being truly complete. for example, my monk x medium crossover and my spideychelle medium!au are technically finished, too, but because they aren’t posted, i won’t be including them (although if i wasn’t sick, maybe they would’ve made it 😭)

way more. keep in mind that the above word count doesn’t include the roughly 50k of unposted fics i have also written this year, lmao. i was super productive over the summer bc i worked an office job where absolutely nothing happened, allowing me to spend the entire time writing! everyone thank the universe for my 2021 levels of productivity bc besties it’s never happening again

What’s your own favorite story of this year?

close tie between If I’m What You Choose, my spideyflash fic, and you do what you can (until it’s not enough) bc i really love betty&liz 🥺😭. If I’m What You Choose was just plain fun to write bc i was able to indulge in all my flash-centric headcanons + his and peter’s dynamic is a JOY to play with, but you do what you can (until it’s not enough) is really special to me because female friendships are horrendously disregarded by fandom and sometimes you just gotta make the content you want to see!

What is your most under appreciated story of the year?

To Mrs. M.A. Before Absence, and that’s bc it’s a ficlet based off a poem from like 1650 lol

by hits? where you belong, a so-called sambucky fic that’s actually just me propagating my “wilson family speaks louisiana french” headcanon 😌

by kudos? how’s your lip?, a super quick sambucky oneshot i wrote after ep 4 (?) of tfatws based on some rizzoli & isles dialogue lol. it was really just an excuse for me to write sarcastic banter 😂

Biggest fanfic related disappointment of 2021?

probably the relatively low feedback for impulse, my “flash gets the venom symbiote” ficlet. all the comments i got on the story from the spooder-man discord were WONDERFUL!! what was disappointing was that there was another venom!flash story that kind of replicated what i did in my ficlet in a less effective way, but it got considerably more hits/kudos/etc. than mine. now, don’t think im angry or that they plagiarized me lmao, bc it’s not that at all! like i said, im just disappointed in general with the lack of response toward the fic. but i do also recognize it’s a super niche idea re the mcu fandom 😂

Biggest fanfic related surprise of 2021?

SARAHMAY AGENDA R I S E!! when i came up with sarahmay as a ship, i expected to only write a few oneshots, which yeah, i did. but i also wrote Is This Love?, a 40k sarahmay + sambucky fic (that’s 55/45 in sarahmay’s favor)! it got way more positive feedback than i expected bc sure, sambucky is fairly popular, but the mcu fandom is horrible at acknowledging sapphic pairings, especially sapphic pairings with women of color. needless to say, i am delighted with how many people i managed to get onboard the sarahmay ship via that fic 😌✨

SO MANY THINGS!! my spideychelle medium!au, part 4 of why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? (my flash-centric series), some ml ideas that have been brewing ever since i caught up with s4, a venom!flash multichap, possibly more acadec friendship fics, a katara-centric oneshot (shorter than broken pieces still belong, lmao), and m o r e. i have too many ideas and not enough time, as per usual
