Margaret of Anjou’s visit to Coventry [in 1456], which was part of her dower and that of her son, Edward of Lancaster, was much more elaborate. It essentially reasserted Lancastrian power. The presence of Henry and the infant Edward was recognised in the pageantry. The ceremonial route between the Bablake gate and the commercial centre was short, skirting the area controlled by the cathedral priory, but it made up for its brevity with no fewer than fourteen pageants. Since Coventry had an established cycle of mystery plays, there were presumably enough local resources and experience to mount an impressive display; but one John Wetherby was summoned from Leicester to compose verses and stage the scenes. As at Margaret’s coronation the iconography was elaborate, though it built upon earlier developments.
Starting at Bablake gate, next to the Trinity Guild church of St. Michael, Bablake, the party was welcomed with a Tree of Jesse, set up on the gate itself, with the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah explaining the symbolism. Outside St. Michael’s church the party was greeted by Edward the Confessor and St. John the Evangelist; and proceeding to Smithford Street, they found on the conduit the four Cardinal Virtues—Righteousness (Justice?), Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude. In Cross Cheaping wine flowed freely, as in London, and angels stood on the cross, censing Margaret as she passed. Beyond the cross was pitched a series of pageants, each displaying one of the Nine Worthies, who offered to serve Margaret. Finally, the queen was shown a pageant of her patron saint, Margaret, slaying the dragon [which 'turned out to be strictly an intercessor on the queen's behalf', as Helen Maurer points out].
The meanings here are complex and have been variously interpreted. An initial reading of the programme found a message of messianic kingship: the Jesse tree equating royal genealogy with that of Christ had been used at the welcome for Henry VI on his return from Paris in 1432. A more recent, feminist view is that the symbolism is essentially Marian, and to be associated with Margaret both as queen and mother of the heir rather than Henry himself. The theme is shared sovereignty, with Margaret equal to her husband and son. Ideal kingship was symbolised by the presence of Edward the Confessor, but Margaret was the person to whom the speeches were specifically addressed and she, not Henry, was seen as the saviour of the house of Lancaster. This reading tips the balance too far the other way: the tableau of Edward the Confessor and St. John was a direct reference to the legend of the Ring and the Pilgrim, one of Henry III’s favourite stories, which was illustrated in Westminster Abbey, several of his houses, and in manuscript. It symbolised royal largesse, and its message at Coventry would certainly have encompassed the reigning king. Again, the presence of allegorical figures, first used for Henry, seems to acknowledge his presence. Yet, while the message of the Coventry pageants was directed at contemporary events it emphasised Margaret’s motherhood and duties as queen; and it was expressed as a traditional spiritual journey from the Old Testament, via the incarnation represented by the cross, to the final triumph over evil, with the help of the Virgin, allegory, and the Worthies. The only true thematic innovation was the commentary by the prophets.
[...] The messages of the pageants firmly reminded the royal women of their place as mothers and mediators, honoured but subordinate. Yet, if passive, these young women were not without significance. It is clear from the pageantry of 1392 and 1426 in London and 1456 in Coventry that when a crisis needed to be resolved, the queen (or regent’s wife) was accorded extra recognition. Her duty as mediator—or the good aspect of a misdirected man—suddenly became more than a pious wish. At Coventry, Margaret of Anjou was even presented as the rock upon which the monarchy rested. [However,] a crisis had to be sensed in order to provoke such emphasis [...]."
-Nicola Coldstream, "Roles of Women in Late Medieval Civic Pageantry," "Reassessing the Roles of Women as 'Makers' of Medieval Art and Culture"
#historicwomendaily#margaret of anjou#my post#henry vi#yeah I don't necessarily agree with Laynesmith's interpretation (that it was essentially Marian with an emphasis on shared sovereignty)#which she herself says is 'admittedly very speculative'#as this book points out that interpretation tips the balance too far on the other side and has a somewhat selective reading#It's also important to remember that this interpretation was not really reflected across wider Lancastrian propaganda at the time#which isn't really talked about - let alone emphasized - as much by historians but remained focused on the King#For example: look at the pro-Lancastrian poem 'The Ship of State' which hails Henry VI as a 'noble shyp made of good tree'#and emphasizes how he was widely supported and defended by many great Lancastrian lords and the crown prince#but not Margaret who was entirely absent#also look at the book 'Knyghthode and Bataile' (presented to Henry) and Fortescue's various pro-Lancastrian texts in the 1460s#even the recording of that Yorkist trial which was iirc reported in the 1459 attainder#all of these were entirely conventional and highlighted the presence and importance of the King. Margaret was not emphasized.#so either the Lancastrians were impossibly inconsistent about what message they actually wanted to convey about the role of their own queen#or the Coventry pageants were not actually meant to emphasize Margaret in the lieu of Laynesmith's interpretation#and would not have been viewed in such a manner by contemporaries#I think we should also keep in mind that we don't really know what Henry VI's condition was like at the time of MoA's entry to Coventry#we know he had been injured in St. Albans and had only just recovered from his second illness#this is especially important to consider since we know he had also arrived at Coventry before Margaret but much more discreetly#and was not welcomed by any pageants that we know of. This is VERY unusual and can be best explained if we consider the fact that he#may have simply not been in the right state (be it physical or state of mind) for it at the time#in which case the pageants for Margaret should be viewed as more of a improvisation/cover-up/temporary measure to bolster prestige#or Henry may have deliberately taken a more discreet role to emphasize the position of his heir - especially important after the long wait#imo I think Kipling's interpretation (ie: that they addressed Margaret but really referenced the prince & heir) makes a lot more sense:#'Coventry [...] regarded Margaret's entry as a kind of triumph-by-proxy: the Queen entered the city but Coventry received its Prince'#though I think he tends to view Margaret as more of a cipher (and has a very questionable view of Henry VI) which I also don't agree with.#The pageants very much DID focus on and reference her but they most prominently emphasized her 'motherhood and duties as queen'#ie: I think Kipling and Laynesmith tip too far on opposite sides and I think this interpretation takes the most realistic middle ground

The baseline of all my gender nonsense is that none of the angels really have A Gender in the way we’d define it? It’s just the best/closest lens to their experience to talk about their identity issues through For Me because I am a genderfucked freak.
Some of them pick up a more human aligned sense of it along the way (like Gabriel, again, having fun with his multitude of funny gender hats (though his internal experience of that is not one-to-one with genderfluidity? It’s weird. He’s weird. He likes his hats.)) The one with probably the most human connection to gender is obviously Anna, because. Well. *gestures at her*
(Trans woman Anna btw. It’s real. I see it. You see it. I should talk about her more.)

It’s easy enough to tell just how much something really got to Kaeya based on the air around him. He’s so carefully in control of his own emotions and Vision alike, his true feelings tend to go unnoticed or masked as something else. But if it really threw him or a loop or upset him in some way, a notable change in temperatures ( proportionate to how much he was affected ) is the surest sign, regardless of his poker face.
#hc; kaeya#//You know it's BAD bad if ice actively starts forming on himself/nearby without him noticing or in spite of him trying to keep calm#//But that usually only happened if something's truly threatening a loved one and he can't do a damn thing about it#//Or otherwise brought out of him by certain folks he's attached to. Like a certain claymore user for instance#//If Diluc ever tried to initiate reconciliation abruptly or even began to pry into his business; Kae is deffo bound to freeze something#//And he would sure hope Diluc wouldn't try to grab his shoulder or otherwise touch him unexpectedly; bc he'd give the man HELLA frostburn#//Pyro and Cryo do Not mix well; especially not if he was already stressed to begin with#//Anyone else trying to pry would get a chill in the air; whether bc of annoyance or rising stress#//Though Jean could also get him to freeze smth if she catches him off-guard a lot easier than most#//Especially if it flusters him--he would accidentally make a flurry burst of ice crystals the moment the feeling hits#//She and Diluc are the people he is/was most attached to; so ofc they're the ones who can get the strongest reactions out of him#//Diluc genuinely angry; whether at Kae or someone near; is also v likely to make him freeze the ground or smth he's holding#//Same with Jean; he assumes--he has yet to see her actually angry; but he genuinely Fears how it would go#//And the thought alone makes frost spread#//The traveler is depending on what exactly it is they do. Angry with him; it's a chill. Hurt; chill; maybe some frost depending#//Otherwise he's got a good handle on his emotions around them#//Y'know how in Frozen when Elsa froze her own room & then later in the prison when she froze her cell & shit started breaking?#//Yeah; that was what happened the first sleep after The Confrontation and during his stay at the Winery#//Both bc of Diluc lashing out and bc he was finally able to process Crepus' death#//Mans could not sleep Anywhere without the room ending up sealed in ice#//And only got worse each and every time Diluc's Vision flickered and dimmed#//He is thoroughly convinced the fact that he kept it on his person constantly is the reason he didn't get himself sick or worse#//He felt so awful for the staff and Adelinde especially if it got bad enough that she needed to get him to come out so it all could melt#//Or otherwise pull him out of his spiraling so he didn't actually compromise himself; the structure; or anyone else#//Would always act like she needed him to fetch her something; but he Knew. He Knew; and was mortified each and even time#//It got easier to control as the years went by; especially after/whenever Diluc replied to his letters#//But occasionally a particular nightmare would get him. Sometimes does in present day; but he's quicker to recover than back then#//When Jean got sick; her desk space had frost coating it while he worked. And when he heard she disappeared on Barbara?#//He froze and broke her inkwell; his coffee mug; and several pens#//All of which he replaced and swore Noelle to utmost secrecy

finally knocked The Monster Project off my watchlist and that was… disappointing?
#idk I feel like it just could’ve been done better. the whole haunted house-esque thing is fun enough but it has DEF been done better#like if I want that vibe I’ll just watch Hell House#OR UH. the one with the fuckin hole in the ground. that creatures come out of#GOD WHAT WAS THAT MOVIE ACTUALLY#DIGGING UP THE MARROW!!!!#that one rules actually#like idk the whole monster interview found footage film IS genuinely a cool idea but the satanist bit was boring and not set up very well#at all. so it just feels tacked on? bc why wouldn’t you have a satanist cult ig?#and I kept thinking Brian was gonna be a monster. THAT felt like it could’ve gone somewhere#he got out of rehab and its established he’s an addict but nothing else. two of the three monsters directly compare themselves to him.#like idk when you’ve got two of your main baddies going ‘ooo were so similar Brian’ AND he keeps splitting off from the rest of the group#like ‘let ME handle this’ idk maybe just have him be a GOOD monster. have it turn out he was in ‘rehab’ to better control his monster side#and the tattoos of initials on his leg were in memorial of friends he killed AS a monster#also the whole drug addict = same as monster thing is fucking overplayed bullshit#it’s one thing if you handle it well like ginger snaps 2 and you could’ve done sth like that here. multiple angles#the vampire gave in completely to her addiction (blood) vs Brian controlling it and finding a middle ground for himself#I like brian tho. I’m picking him up and plunking him in a better story bc he’s an interesting character he could’ve been really cool#ALSO IT FUCKING SUCKS HIW APPROPRIATIVE IT IS. THATS A WHOLE OTHER FUCKING THING#anyways 3.5/10 better movies have been made I like one character so I’m keeping him

I have to visit the great uncle (grand uncle technically but english kinship terms are weird that way) who doesn't like me (and once tried to convince me (a 25 year old) that a high-pitched sound has a low frequency) today so wish me luck I guess
#Like. it's fine to be annoyed by me I'm very annoying I admit#I even understand dislike when it's based on characters or behaviours I actually have or exhibit#But like. I don't really get why he doesn't like me when he likes my parents so much#I try to match his energy and sense of humour#and not to toot my own horn but I am good to him and his family I think or at least I try#Like. he has worse...nieflings? great nieflings?#My family is the only one from our branch who visits and doesn't make a nuisance of ourselves#And like. It's still cool to like hate me or whatever based on vibes alone but keep that shit to yourself#At least pretend to be civil#Not that he's hostile or anything but he keeps asking me like. 10th grade physics questions (and being wrong about the answers)#Or ignoring my contributions to the conversation#Like. dude we have so many common interests. we are both engineers. we both learned to play keyboard (very badly). we both sew.#we are both interested in diy#At least pretend to get along like my grandma who hates me does (other side of the family)#Personal#Sorry I keep using this site like a diary but I also think it is kind of funny that people hate me#Like if you met me irl you'd not even notice me I'm really a blend into the background kind of guy#I don't understand how I could even inspire such a strong reaction as hate like a mild dislike is fine but hate??#Except my grandma though. she hates me because she hates my mom and thinks she is an evil mastermind. I hope I was kidding#Also she thinks I am not as good as her other grandson who is much more successful. okay that's true but not grounds for hate lol#I kind of know why they hate me. but I kind of want to still give them the benefit of the doubt because I'm an idiot at heart

#rosey is the murderer and it’s brought on by a string of events that involve#the recovery cube disappearing for unknown reasons and that putting everyone on edge#rosey experiencing nightmares because of this#her stumbling upon an undiscovered entrance to the cave and finding a beautiful area inside it thats lit up by unknown crystals#bugs and plants etc#and finally her finding spraypaints knife on the ground#the first victim would be either hanger or limey or playdoh. or maybe she’d save him for last or something#and at first she’d think that record would be one of the easier kills but she tries it and in like a split second she sees a flash of purple#next thing she knows she’s slammed into the wall like on the other side of the room and she’s like Oh shit#and the whole time its a rush because rosey Knows the recovery cube is gonna be back eventually at any moment#and she Knows that it punishes contestants#pilly is the one who stresses out over trying to solve the murders#dependibg on how early limeys killed off that could be his main motivation#hanger if she isn’t killed for the majority of the thing would play the role of coiny but /p#OR peanut since he also has a relatively good relationship with rosey#it would also be way harder for rosey to actually do since the realm is a very open area#like if she went into a specific room to kill she’d still have to go through all the others to get back and go to the cave#also daddy long legs wouldn’t do anything i imagine. hes already intimated by small things in canon so i cant even imagine how he’d handle#something like this#but also rosey HAS to keep him alive bc if he dies then. its gonna be like hfj one all over again am i right guys#odiespeak#burner

The Half Life of Valery K by Natasha Pulley would be so good if it was good
#i'm gonna have to revive my goodreads account just to leave a bad review AND send 10 million ranting voice messages to my friend tomorrow#ok first the premise was good and based on true history about the ussr's secret nuclear testing facility City 40#the first half of the book had well-written mystery and the atmosphere was truly chilling it was a great cold war era thriller#unfortunately this book has too many flaws and just things that are straight up bad#such as: the mc is an uwuified scientist ex prisoner who GUESS WHAT worked directly under joseph mengele on human experiments???#and it's just like but uwu he was still young and had no choice#well the author had a choice and if you're gonna write something like that at least explore the topic properly????????#oh yeah and an entire prisoner train carriage of women gets raped by all the male prisoner except for valery our heroic mc#who couldn't do anything about it then until he laters kills all of those men with a bomb so he gets a traumatic AND a heroic backstory#and then the love interest: the kgb man with a wife and 4 kids he dearly loves but who conveniently get written off at the end#with no clear resolution as to what actually happened to his family after he defects abroad and he barely even mentions them afterwards????#oh yeah and our mc has some wildly anachronistic sjw-esque tumblr feminisms that the author forced in seemingly to make up for her#treatment of the actual female characters in the book???#the science was sound for the most part except the so-called scientist characters were being STUPID about it#they're like ohhh i wonder what are these weird mud geysers that keep popping off when we're not on volcanic ground#THAT'S THE GODDAMN HEAT FROM THE RADIOACTIVE WASTE AND I KNEW THAT FROM THE FIRST MENTION OF THESE GEYSERS#also the authir doesn't know how russian surnames work and wildly overestimates the amount of coffee that russians drink#and wildly underestimates the alcohol tolerance of 50+ year old bulky kgb officers and doesn't seem to know that the russian language#is gendered. like she writes a whole monologue for valery complaining about being called mister by the english because it's gendered????#also the whole resolution of the book is like a mediocre action thriller airport novel compared to the tense and atmospheric beginning#nah i'm going to sleep. good night
