LBTE: Jared (175)
We did it, everyone! We made it to the end. I had no idea what I was getting into over six years(!)ago, and I probably would have balked if I had, so it’s for the best I didn’t.
This is — tough. These two have been constant companions for over half a decade, and in that time I thought about them, without exaggeration, every single day. It’s really difficult to leave that behind. But it’s the right place to leave them, and it’s time.
The LBTE answers some questions re: timeline and the like. I haven't tackled any asks yet since I didn't want to accidentally spoil anyone, and that worked out, because a lot of the asks are answered below.
Okay. Part 175.
Here's the series page one last time, for those following along. Scroll all the way to the end.
Brian’s the one who gives them the news.
Brian does not have to give them this news, frankly it should be Dave, but Brian finds out and he’s so excited(!) he calls Bryce right away. In case you’re wondering if Brian is still the best GM.
He doesn’t know what it takes to be untouchable, but he’s pretty sure trading a Conn Smythe winner with a sweetheart deal would get Brian run out of Vancouver.
The Cup win is a year before the epilogue takes place. Yes, Eastern teams are getting kind of pissed off about this run of Western Conference winners I have going on. Especially because the Scouts are still in the wings, being an annoying as hell dynasty.
Bryce signed an 8x8 in the summer following the end of IJ(aoe). 64 million dollars is obviously nothing to scoff at, but he could have made 9+ on the open market, easy.
Jared’s was 2.5x4. Which is MORE than he’d get open market, especially regarding term, but like, did you just see the hometown discount Marcus gave them? His husband being there is kind of a condition.
Okay, so maybe Jared isn’t exactly calm, because he doesn’t think running through negative scenarios is calm, exactly, but it does calm him just enough that he isn’t plastering himself to Bryce in an attempt to eavesdrop.
Maybe not plastering himself, but he is inching closer and closer as this conversation goes on.
“Yeah, he’s sitting right beside me,” Bryce says. “He hasn’t ripped the phone out of my hand yet, but he’s definitely considering it.”
And glaring. Oh, the glaring Bryce is on the receiving end of right now.
“I’m up for the King Clancy,” Bryce says.
A leadership and humanitarian award, though the Mark Messier Leadership Award (HAH) is defacto now more straight team leadership, and the King Clancy has mostly become charitable impact in local community. Though it does tend to go to players in leadership roles (captains, alternates), it isn’t exclusive to them.
"Wouldn’t I just be a distraction?” Jared asks.
Bruh. You think Bryce would go to the Awards without you? Like, for any award, but the one for starting a charity that he never would have been in the mental place to start were it not for his relationship with you?
If he’d thought for even a millisecond before opening his mouth he would not have said this. Some things have not changed in the Marcus Matheson household.
“Us doesn’t take things away from me,” Bryce says. “I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t met you.”
“I know, but—“
“No, seriously, J,” Bryce says. “That’s not — you think the guy you met would have done like, any of this? I couldn’t even think about shit without needing to climb out of my head.”
So like — if IJ(aoe) was the traditional storyline following a hero’s ups and downs, the hero pretty clearly would be Bryce. And when the hero’s struggling and lashing out and pretending to be someone he’s not, and hating both himself and the person he’s pretending to be, he gets assigned community service and he meets the most beautiful person he’s ever seen.
And now he has to face those parts of himself he’s trying to bury, because those parts are loudly telling him he needs to be around this person every single second of every single day.
And this person doesn’t like the persona the hero’s put on. He likes the person the hero is, which is sensitive, and empathetic, and emotional, all those things the hero’s been told he can’t be, shouldn’t be, that’s what the love interest wants him to be. Exactly who he is.
Bryce wouldn’t have had the guts to take off the mask if, every step of the way, Jared wasn’t letting him know, with word and deed, that guy under the mask was the person he was in love with.
And that’s not even getting into the fact that, from the beginning, Jared is much more comfortable with his sexuality, and people knowing about his sexuality, than Bryce is.
Bryce kisses him quiet, and Jared’s grateful, because he wanted to take the words back as soon as they left his mouth, stomach twisting just saying them. He suddenly felt this visceral, totally illogical anger toward someone who doesn’t actually exist, or like, exists somewhere, not knowing there’s this huge hole in his life because Bryce Marcus isn’t in it. Fuck that guy, though. Better him than Jared.
Jared doesn’t fight but he’ll make an exception for that guy.
“You’ll come?” Bryce asks.
“Yeah,” Jared says. “I’ll come. Of course I’ll come.”
An echo of all of one part ago! Of course. Jared’s answer to Bryce’s question is of course. Even if it’s a ride in an obnoxiously showy convertible or a trip to Las Vegas in June.
Or any other month, he supposes, though the league’s getting pretty deep into talks to make it an expansion team, so that may change.
I still haven’t decided vis a vis expansion teams (and certainly haven't decided when that would take effect) but I’ve realised I can yoink players from other teams and then put them on one team TOGETHER, like one big summer camp, and that sounds chaotic and fun.
Bryce squeezes his knee, like he knows he’s thinking angry thoughts. Probably not hard to guess. They pass a building’s display flipping from the time to the temperature. 106. That’s a life-threatening fever. They’re in a life-threatening fever.
I checked the temperature in late June over the course of four years so this would be accurate, and accuracy is a high grade fever. If it’s 106 inside, go to the hospital. Outside, you’re in Vegas in late June.
“Did you know it’s forty-one degrees out?” Jared demands.
Bryce squeezes his knee again.
“I know,” Jared mutters.
Look at Bryce handling him without a word.
snapping a picture of the view from their window for the group chat, captioning it with Man’s hubris, then changing for dinner.
Jared Matheson, everyone.
He’s halfway through a reply when the elevator doors open, which means he doesn’t realise he’s sharing the elevator with Brandon Simcoe until the doors have already closed behind him, and now he’s trapped with him for the next 23 floors. Unless he hits the button for the next floor, but that’s showing weakness, right? Jared’s pretty sure that’s the opposite of what you’re supposed to do when faced with an apex predator. What’s he supposed to do, though, ignore him? Play dead?
He’s such a drama queen. Shithead’s harmless.
(This is not true even a little; it’s fun that the first real view anyone got of Shithead was Joey’s, because Shithead IS harmless to Joey. He loves Joey! Then you’ve got Holden getting cross-checked black and blue by him even though Shithead likes him in COTT. Bryce? Not his friend. Not harmless.
“Yeah,” Jared says. What’s he going to do, disavow his own husband to save his skin? It clearly wouldn’t even work. “That’s — yeah, I am.”
Got to love Jared’s moral calculus does take into account whether going ‘Bryce Marcus who?’ would save his skin, and only rejecting that option because Shithead clearly wouldn’t believe him.
“Cool,” Simcoe says. “You know, my best buddy back on the Scouts is gay. Fucking love that guy.”
Joey: Bud you gotta stop telling everybody that.
Shithead: That you’re gay?
Joey: That I’m your best buddy.
“What, that I love him?” Simcoe says. “Oh man, I didn’t mean that way, he’s got a fiancé. And I’m not gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. Obviously. You know.”
;-; Brandon
Anyway, no ScratchnMoney marriage yet. We haven't gotten THAT far into the future.
“We’re not like—“ Jared says. “You know we don’t all like…talk, right? We don’t have a gay player group chat or anything.”
“You should, it’d be sick,” Simcoe says.
I’m with Shithead on this. Get on it, Marc.
The elevator doors open, and Simcoe claps him on the back so hard Jared has to put a foot forward so he doesn’t careen right into the elevator wall, says, “Love is love, man, love is love,” then walks away.
Your periodic reminder that Shithead is the Bruins’ YCP rep.
He sums things up to the group chat while he waits for his heart rate to slow, his knees to cooperate again. He’s just finished when Bryce walks out of the restaurant across the lobby, beelining for him like he’s got a Jared-dar.
I spelled that so many ways before I settled on Jared-dar. Jaredar. Jared-Dar. Jare-dar. Nothing feels right.
Anyway, Bryce definitely has one of those installed.
“You’re sure you’re good?” Bryce asks, fingers in Jared’s hair now, like he’s feeling for bumps and bruises.
Jared laughs. “Oh my god, the most violent thing he did was pat me on the back a little too hard.”
Bryce starts patting down Jared’s back.
Both of them reacting like Jared just got out of a tiger enclosure is great.
Summers, thankfully, doesn’t take Bryce ditching him over an elevator conversation as an insult. He thinks it’s hilarious, in fact, and it ends up being the nicest dinner Jared’s had with both of them. Which isn’t saying much, really, but it is something.
‘My husband was stuck in an elevator with a dude I’ve punched in the face like half a dozen different times’ is delightful to Dave. Emergency accepted.
Anyway, Bryce and Dave aren’t suddenly David and Dave, they still tend to get under each other’s skin, sometimes accidentally, sometimes not, but they’re both getting better.
Elaine and her boyfriend arrive from Vancouver not long after they wrap it up, and Bryce shakes his hand and says his name without scowling once, which is also a first.
Never mind the reams of paper I could have written about the road to the Cup, and the Cup, and Raf’s wedding, and Chaz’s wedding — this right here could have been an arc in itself.
He’s definitely had help. From Elaine, of course, but Jared suspects Ash’s involvement too, along with possibly Erin’s — ‘my beloved sister’ certainly sounds like her doing. He wouldn’t even be surprised if PR Grace took a swipe at it — some of it has that PR gloss to it, though not so much that it feels over-polished.
All have had a hand in this speech, yes. Also Stephen and Gabe. (Bryce used Stephen as a stand-in for Jared in the ‘make sure this isn’t too cheesy’ aspect.)
“Really,” Jared says. “You can probably cut the stuff about me by half, though. Possibly three quarters. Just leave it at, I don’t know, ‘shoutout to my husband Jared’ and move right on?”
It’s cute you think that’s even worth the effort of saying.
Jared’s in a custom tailored suit made with ‘summer fabric’, whatever that is, other than cooler than the usual suit fabric, thank fuck.
It’s just linen. Jared tends to tune out immediately where any of this is involved because he knows Bryce has it handled.
He’d originally protested that he could just wear the suit he wore at Raf’s wedding, because Bryce was practically obsessed with him in it at the time
That suit was tailored to perfection. Bryce wants to know the name of Raf’s guy.
Anyway, not so subtle implication minimum two years have passed since the end of IJ(aoe) as Raf’s wedding was a year out from the end, and Jared isn’t talking about Raf’s wedding like it was a week ago.
Also summer fabric’s not a bad thing, considering he’s got four weddings to go to in the next three months, including Gabe and Stephen’s. Canucks just can’t stop proposing. It’s frankly gotten ridiculous.
Okay, another ask I got: was the Stanley Cup recent or older. The epilogue is a year after they win the Cup — most of those proposals took place in the weeks following the Cup, and now, a year later, the weddings are happening.
Including Gabe and Stephen’s, and yes: the original just city hall with immediate family ceremony is no longer canon because the sad eyes Gabe would get from his entire team. Why does he not want them there. etc. (Gabe’s mom is so happy I changed this.)
Right now he’s grateful for his suit, because as hot as he is — and he is disgustingly hot — at least he isn’t wearing wool like the poor kid in front of him. He looks miserable. Also about twelve years old, but then, he’s there for the Calder. He isn’t going to win it — there’s a very clear front runner and it’s not him — and Jared feels kind of bad that he’s not only a loser, but a loser in a hot as fuck suit, who’s too young to legally do anything Vegas was built for.
Have been asked a few times who this is. No one who’s been established in the ‘verse, but I fucking feel for this dude. Him and the Calder winner should totally hook up later. For tradition’s sake.
Jared may as well go over to the group, sign some autographs and take a few selfies while he waits for Bryce and Elaine to catch up. He plans on taking his time, but one of the girls asks Jared to marry her, and then asks him to sign her chest.
Jared misses anonymity.
“I said no,” Bryce assures him.
“I wasn’t worried,” Jared says. “You being gay is kind of why we’re here.”
“It was a guy,” Bryce says.
“Still not worried,” Jared says.
“You don’t ever have to be,” Bryce says, very seriously, and thankfully Elaine pats Bryce’s arm so Jared doesn’t have to. Like he said: not worried.
Jared has absolutely zero concerns about Bryce straying. Less than zero.
Jared would protest that it’s just a nervous habit, but that would directly contradict him telling Bryce he wasn’t nervous right before the red carpet, and Bryce clearly knows it.
Why must you call Jared on his lies, Bryce?
“I feel like I’m at the draft again,” Jared says, wiping his palms on his slacks, even though the AC is so high he’s actually a little chilly. They must have it cranked to the max in a war with the swelter outside.
It's fun to send Jared to Vegas in June after he bitched so much about Tampa in June. Boy does not handle heat with grace.
"I've mentioned that I'm proud of you, right?" Jared asks.
"I know you are," Bryce says, which is a very nice way of saying no.
Another call back to last part! Because Jared is his father’s son whether he likes it or not.
"I know, babe," Bryce says. "You telling Ash and Grace and Erin their partners are losers who've never even been nominated for anything was kind of a sign. Which like, you remember Julius won the Calder, right? Because Erin definitely does."
This didn’t make it into the final bit, but Jared receives this immediately after Bryce wins the King Clancy:
"Okay phew Bryce won so I can send this: I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU THAT UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE (your wonderful husband that you do not deserve) JULIUS HALLA WON AN AWARD IN THE VERY 1ST YEAR OF HIS NHL CAREER AND MOREOVER WAS NOMINATED…" She would have sent it anyway, Jared's pretty sure, she just would have waited until tomorrow.
"Fuck," Jared repeats. He wasn't one of the top finalists, because the Oilers sucked hard even with all he did for them, but still, he was. "Erin's going to be on me about this forever."
Deservedly. How dare you forget Julius’ Calder.
“If they don’t give you the award I don’t know what I’ll do,” Jared says. Maybe burn the theatre down, though he’d probably die of heat stroke before he pulled it off.
Jared turns to arson quicker and quicker as this series goes on.
“Hey man, good to see you again,” Simcoe says, then looks at Bryce, mouth flattening. Bryce looks back, mouth just as flat as Simcoe’s. They hold eye contact for long enough that Simcoe’s date coughs, giving Jared an awkward smile.
I knew what the people needed: more Shithead.
“I can’t see past his head,” Bryce complains.
“Not my fault you’re short, bro,” Simcoe says, without turning around.
Shithead’s a monster. Like, physically, as well as everything else.
“Be the bigger man than him,” Jared murmurs to him. “Proverbially, if not literally.”
Bryce scowls, foot coming up in position dangerously close to seat kicking.
I think repeatedly kicking the seat in front of you may lose some points on the leadership aspect of the award, but also, the committee might make an exception because it’s Shithead.
“Do not,” Jared says.
“Or what,” Bryce says.
“I’ll switch spots with Elaine,” Jared says. “Hang out with her boyfriend for the rest of the show. Do some nice bonding.”
Bryce makes a furious noise, but lowers his foot to the ground from its current ‘in preparation to kick’ position, so Jared considers it a win.
As you can see here, Bryce is taking Elaine dating with tremendous maturity and dignity.
The show itself is excruciating, a mix of bad jokes, a rock-ish country-ish band Jared’s pretty sure he’s obligated to like as a born and raised Albertan, but refuses to due to the fact they suck, and a distribution of all the awards everyone already knew the winner of.
I’m not vagueblogging about Nickelback or anything, just describing a significant number of bands from Alberta.
Bryce mutely holds out his hand, and Jared takes it, squeezing when Bryce gives him a slightly sickly smile. He looks nervous as hell now, and any other time Jared would point that out, but not right now, not today.
The smile Jared gives Bryce is just as sickly, for the record.
but when Bryce stands up, he does too. Has to, considering how tightly he’s holding his hand.
Literally one unit.
“Can I kiss you right now,” Bryce says. They may be out, but they haven’t, not in public. Even when they won the Cup they settled for hugs until the cameras were put away.
Bryce wholly intended to just hug Jared this time too (or else they would have discussed this before like, that second) but he just — really wants to kiss Jared right now.
“Please,” Bryce says, and Jared’s barely nodded before Bryce is hauling him in.
Needs to, really.
And objectively, it’s a shitty kiss. Has to be one of the worst they’ve ever shared, and neither of them can stop smiling long enough to fix it even a little. But with Bryce’s hands cradling his head, Bryce’s grin splitting his face it’s so fucking wide, Jared can’t bring himself to mind.
And like their engagement, and their wedding, and Bryce doing all the machinations to get himself to Vancouver, the kiss fucking sucks. Because, once again, they’re both grinning too hard to kiss each other properly, but they can’t stop smiling long enough kiss each other properly, and they refuse to stop kissing.
And yeah. In the traditional story, the hero goes from the talented but angry, terrified, self-hating player walking into a hockey camp for community service because it’s that or probation. And then, around decade later, he’s kissing his husband on a nationally televised show, after accepting an award for working with LGBTQ youth athletes, with the frankly too hot for him love interest supporting and pushing him the whole way.
If you’d have told a 20 year old Bryce that was coming, he’d have probably punched you (Oilers fan was a time traveller: confirmed). But he’s done so much growing up — not just from who I thought he was, or Jared thought he was (neither of us gave him nearly enough credit at the start), but from who he thought he was, or had the potential to be.
I wrote the as sort of a summary of the final part about a year ago, an encapsulation of the entire series in one sentence, to keep in mind as I finished the series.
The biggest goal for Bryce, along the way, is being seen and accepted for who he actually is. Bryce wants that for others too. Jared just wants it for Bryce.
The hero of the story doesn’t narrate this one, but the narrator is, without a doubt, his biggest fan.
(He is aware he shares this title with Elaine.)

Notes about The Diana Award
Hi Skippy & Friends-This year’s Legacy Award marks the start of The Diana Award’s 25th Anniversary year –20 exceptional young people, from across the world, were acknowledged. Taking place every two years, The Legacy Award is the most prestigious accolade a young person can receive for their social action or humanitarian work.
All the Legacy Award recipients – who come from the UK, USA, Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, UAE, Oman, Romania, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Australia - have had a huge impact on society. Independent judging panel was chaired by Baroness Doreen Lawrence- the title sponsor, Gilead Sciences Alex Kalomparis, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs.
My thoughts after taking a peek, is the award winners have been actually WORKING hard in the trenches of their societies to help very impoverished woman, children and families. They are doing serious heavy lifting, unlike the ones who strut on stages spouting word salad, wearing designer outfits (trying to at least) acting all so regal and intelligent. She would not last one hour with any of these winners IMHO.  Check out The Diana Award site and read all about them-they are the ones to know about!
By the way, we watched the latest Canadian/Dev Patel produced award winning documentary film called “To Kill a Tiger” which is incredible! It is the real-life story, filmed as it happened, (without them there covering this families awful legal battle it would not have made international news) fighting for justice for the gang rape of their 13-year-old daughter-the first time EVER in India a father has demanded a judgement??! It is riveting and you will be amazed at how fast it engages you…we were shouting at the screen from the get-go, at the insanity of what they had to deal with! The community, the legal system, the brutal beliefs, all make real life drama that had us on the edge of our “sofa” rooting for this very loving, intelligent father, who said this would be like trying to kill a tiger.
So, I hope this type of work by young, bright people will begin to help transform archaic behavior and reduce human suffering. I think the Joker Prince showing up on the screen as if they were at a local bar/pub, calling them “guys” sounding terribly sophomoric…was a downer to the importance of their awards. The real prince had left the building. Over and out for now. Pilgrim
Thank you dear Pilgrim!  Great post!❤️

The Kremlin uses state funding and appointment of loyalists to the Russian Red Cross (RRC) to mold it into a propaganda tool while violating its core principles of neutrality and independence, a joint investigation by a team of journalists published on Vsquare on Feb. 27 reveals.
The insights into the RRC's operations come as part of the "Kremlin leaks," a media investigation into secret documents of a Russian presidential administration official, Sergey Kiriyenko. The Red Cross investigation was co-authored by journalists from Delfi Estonia, Vsquare, Meduza, Expressen, and Paper Trail Media.
Russia allocated some 6.7 million euros ($7.3 million) to the RRC in 2024. According to the investigation, the funding is aimed at expanding the organization's activities in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
This is a clear violation of its rules, as only the International Committee of the Red Cross is allowed to operate in war zones. National branches of the Red Cross can work in other countries only with the permission of the hosting state, and Ukraine has not extended such permission to the RRC.
Russia's operations in Ukraine also include setting up controlled organizations under the Red Cross' name, such as the unrecognized "Donetsk Red Cross" or the "Luhansk Red Cross." ICRC has collaborated with the "Luhansk Red Cross" on humanitarian issues since 2014, the journalists said, citing an ICRC representative.
Russian state-controlled media then publicized these "humanitarian" activities to paint the occupation in a positive light.
"The Donetsk Red Cross organization replaces the runaway Committee!" Ekaterina Suhachova, a supposed representative of the "Donetsk Red Cross," said in a video published by the state-controlled TASS news agency.
According to a Ukrainian fighter who was released from Russian captivity, supposed RRC employees who had access to Ukrainian prisoners of war have insulted and abused the POWs, calling them "pigs," Meduza reported.
Under the leadership of Pavel Savchuk, a Kremlin loyalist who held a position in the pro-Vladimir Putin All-Russia People's Front (ONF) political group, the RRC has reportedly cooperated with sanctioned organizations involved in raising funds for the Russian military.
The RRC has also handed out awards for "humanitarian contributions" to companies creating weapons used against Ukraine. For example, the Avangard factory, which produces S-300 and S-400 missiles, was reportedly awarded by the RRC for increasing blood donations from its workers.
The RRC's staff have made public statements in support of Russia's war, promoting Russian propaganda narratives.
"How can we talk about some kind of peace negotiations when Ukrainian Nazis are committing war crimes before our eyes," Nikolay Dobylev, the head of the RRC's Tver branch, said in a comment for local media.
"Let us wish them (Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine) courage, perseverance, and God's help! Victory, victory, victory on all fronts," wrote Irina Levina, who heads the RRC's Sverdlovsk department, in her public New Year's greeting.
The loyal RRC leadership also helps Russia to expand its influence abroad, namely within the international Red Cross network.
Savchuk was elected to the governing board of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in the summer of 2022, allowing him to travel to Geneva headquarters.
The leaked documents reveal that Savchuk's role is to expand not only Russia's influence but also the use of the Russian language in the Red Cross documents. This is meant to bolster the status of the language in the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the investigation reveals.
Ukraine has sanctioned the RRC and Savchuk for their activities, the only country to do so to date. Ukraine's Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, appealed to the ICRC to expel the RRC after the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka in 2022.

The article:
Over the past few weeks, many people around the world joined me in celebrating my career firsts — from winning my first Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and Independent Spirit Award to earning my first Oscar (for actress in a leading role). While I am grateful for this unforgettable moment in my professional life, I want to redirect that global spotlight to an issue that is very personal to me and warrants the world’s attention.
My life changed eight years ago when one moment shook my outlook on the world.
It was April 25, 2015, and I was in Nepal with my partner, Jean Todt, visiting local organizations. Suddenly, I felt the earth begin to tremble violently. Outside the doors of the low-rise building I was in, a deadly earthquake ravaged the country. I’ve never felt the type of fear and panic I felt that day, when the ground beneath me shook so powerfully, I couldn’t stand on my feet. I had to crawl to try to make it to the door to escape. When we emerged, we had to stay outside for hours, unsure which buildings were strong enough or safe enough to return to.
I was fortunate to make it through that day unscathed, but not untouched. The experience was terrifying. Its effects linger with me still. Our hotel was damaged during the earthquake and was no longer safe to enter, so we made our way straight to the airport, where we spent two nights before being evacuated by plane. As we got on the road, I saw the ruins and destruction all around me. I couldn’t shake the thought of how unfair it was that I had a home to go to, unlike the thousands of families whose entire lives were suddenly reduced to rubble.
Disasters of such magnitude cause irreparable damage to the lives of those who already have so little. I witnessed this when I returned to Nepal to help with relief efforts three weeks after the earthquake and then again a year later, when I returned as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program.
I thought again of Nepal when I watched the coverage of the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria last month. Even before the earthquake struck, the socioeconomic conditions in Syria were dire, with approximately 90 percent of the population living in poverty and millions in need of humanitarian assistance. Many are now homeless and lack the means to rebuild their lives or keep their families safe.
Crises aren’t just moments of catastrophe: They expose deep existing inequalities. Those living in poverty, especially women and girls, bear the brunt. In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, lack of sanitation, health facilities and safety disproportionately affect women. In my time as a goodwill ambassador, I have seen up close how women and girls are often the last to go back to school and the last to get basic services like clean water, vaccines, identity cards and counseling. They are typically the last to get jobs and loans.
In Syria the United Nations anticipates some 40,000 women will give birth in the coming months without access to sanitary conditions. When women have to sleep out in the open — often the case when buildings have collapsed or are unsafe — or in group shelters without adequate privacy or protection, they are at increased risk of sexual violence and assault, which skyrocket in the aftermath of a disaster.
To fully recover from a disaster and be prepared for the next one, the specific needs of women and girls must be factored into the humanitarian response.
Women must also play leadership roles in the recovery process. But women are woefully underrepresented in the decision making that affects their prospects of survival in times of crisis. This gap has a dangerous effect: Studies have shown that women are hit hardest in disasters. Women and girls are often at a disadvantage when it comes to rescue efforts, and women are more likely than men to suffer from hunger.
We know women sustain their communities. Their voices, leadership and full participation are key to an inclusive, successful and sustainable recovery. This means considering women’s needs, priorities and safety when rebuilding neighborhoods and constructing schools and marketplaces. It means ensuring women have equal access to information, job opportunities and skills training, as well as loans and insurance mechanisms, which are all crucial to regain financial stability.
We know having more women in positions of power and as decision makers at community, national and institutional levels leads to more inclusive policies, laws and practices that protect and contribute to gender equality at all levels. It means striving for zero tolerance for gender-based violence at home, at work, online or anywhere else. And it also means investing in women’s education to ensure their voices are represented at the highest levels of government and society.
We live in a world plagued by recurrent pandemic, war and disaster and are struggling with climate change. It can feel insurmountable. But we also live during a time of incredible technological advancements. Information and communication technologies are our most powerful allies in battling these crises. Technology keeps essential social services running, improves crisis response, strengthens communities and boosts economic recovery.
And yet the digital world is also a place of inequality. Globally, 2.7 billion people are excluded from digital connectivity, more of them women. As a result, according to the World Bank, women face barriers in getting access to information and resources in all spheres of their lives, including how to adequately prepare for, respond to and cope with a disaster.
Reducing the digital divide is critical in changing deeply ingrained gender social norms and ensuring that women’s voices and leadership are embedded at the highest levels before, during and after a disaster. Furthermore, we must make measurable investments in women’s education that promote digital literacy and STEM fields.
This year we are halfway toward the 2030 target date to achieve what the United Nations calls Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint for a shared global vision of a world without poverty or inequality. What I have learned through my work with U.N.D.P. is that realizing these global goals will be possible only if we achieve true gender equality, everywhere, and in all aspects of life — especially in times of crisis — and in anticipation of the next disaster.
I’m 60 years old, and I just won my first Oscar. I know something about perseverance, and I am all too aware of what society expects of women. I’m also well aware that my experience can’t compare at all with that of the women heroes I met who are on the front lines of crises. But if I can do one thing with this moment of my professional joy, it would be to point the spotlight on those who all too often go unacknowledged, the women who are rebuilding their communities, taking care of children and older people and putting food on the table. Let’s make sure they are not missing from the room when decisions are being made that affect them the most.

Robert Flaherty’s 1948 film Louisiana Story is set entirely in the bayous of South Louisiana. Local residents were hired as actors, and the plot revolves around a boy’s family that has allowed an oil company to drill in the inlet that runs behind their house. There is no resistance to the oil seekers, and as the film progresses, the company completes its operation and leaves behind an untouched, pristine environment—and a wealthy, content family.
Louisiana Story received widespread acclaim when it was released, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Music (still the only film score to do so) and an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing in a Motion Picture Story. The Library of Congress also added the film to the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The film was, in fact, culturally significant—but not in all the ways inclusion in the registry may have implied.
In a New York Times review from September 1948, a critic writes: “the intrusion—of an oil-drilling derrick, in this case—only briefly disturbs the serenity of a Louisiana bayou and of a small boy’s life. But, at least, it is recognition that the machine can be a useful friend of man, no more rapacious, in some way, than primitive man or nature themselves.”
In this glowing view of the machine, the critic seems to contribute to the intended purpose of the film: to sway public opinion in favor of the oil industry. The film portrays the industry in a humanitarian light because the project was funded by the Standard Oil Company to promote its drilling ventures in Louisiana’s waterways.

Link soup, with a dash of nightshade
A random sampling of things I'm reading and thinking about today...
From Venture Beat by way of Boing Boing: AI-poisoning tool Nightshade now available for artists to use | VentureBeat
"Developed by computer scientists on the Glaze Project at the University of Chicago under Professor Ben Zhao, [Nightshade] essentially works by turning AI against AI. It makes use of the popular open-source machine learning framework PyTorch to identify what’s in a given image, then applies a tag that subtly alters the image at the pixel level so other AI programs see something totally different than what’s actually there."
While the headline promises more than the article delivers, at first glance it does look like there's more meat to the NYT lawsuit against OpenAI than similar suits brought by authors : A New York Times copyright lawsuit could kill OpenAI - Vox
Speaking of AI *spits on the floor*, from the great Kayleigh Donaldson at Pajiba: Nobody Wants to Read AI Generated Articles (pajiba.com)
"I’m reminded of every bad-faith tech bozo on Twitter who claims that AI art made from sites like Midjourney is ‘democratizing’ the process of who can paint or draw or direct. That’s bullsh*t.... True democratizing of creativity would be fighting for fair wages so that entry to the cultural sector isn’t dependent on your parents or net worth. It would be acknowledging unions and making an effort to diversify your newsroom beyond legacy hires. It would be encouraging investment in schools from governments who cut arts funding the moment they claim we all need to tighten our belts."
Pluto is in Aquarius... and apparently, that's a big deal: Pluto In Aquarius Is Here (refinery29.com). I follow my horoscope with the same discipline and intensity as I follow the NFL, which is to say I have a vague awareness of the signs and their meaning (apparently, I'm a Scorpio Rising, which means on a given day, I have the potential to be either a very charming dinner companion or a very problematic serial killer or both):
"The movement of Pluto into Aquarius is set to have a significant impact on technology, space exploration, scientific progress, and society. This shift will usher in a new era of connectivity, prompting us to explore ways to engage with our neighbours and local communities. On a broader scale, we may find ourselves drawn to humanitarian pursuits that align with our personal values and goals. "

KStew is at Sundance to promote a couple of films and pick up a Visionary Award:
Kristen Stewart dresses casually for the premieres of Love Lies Bleeding and Love Me at Sundance (laineygossip.com)
Deadline describes KStew's Love Lies Bleeding "a snapshot of America. Saturated with guns, marked by bloodshed and characterized by lawlessness" centred on KStew and Katy O'Brien as a "toxic, uhaul duo of star-crossed psychos in love". Okay, then... ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ Review: Kristen Stewart In Psychological Thriller
Total Film/Games Radar has a round up of pull quotes from various reviews, here: First reactions to new Kristen Stewart movie from Saint Maud director call it "brutal, brilliant, and bloody"
I'm tentatively excited for Love Lies Bleeding but this is the exact sort of film that does great in the hothouse environment of a film festival, then withers and dies when exposed to the less forgiving climate of the local multiplex...
Finally, Asajj Ventress has hair now...?

PNG to Investigate Corruption Claims in Australia-Funded Refugee Program
Allegations of widespread corruption and mismanagement within the Australia-funded refugee support program in Papua New Guinea will be formally investigated by the Port Moresby government.
After allegations from a whistleblower inside PNG’s immigration authority that millions of dollars had potentially been misused, PNG’s deputy prime minister, also the minister for immigration, John Rosso, has ordered an audit into where the money has gone.
“The serious allegations by the whistleblower, separate complaints raised by other parties, the local and international media coverage on it, and the undertaking by the Australian government to investigate the program, requires our government to carry out our own audit into the arrangement,” Rosso said.
He said he had written to PNG’s chief migration officer Stanis Hulahau, demanding a report on the secretive Australian-funded refugee support scheme – the details of which both Port Moresby and Canberra have consistently refused to reveal publicly.
“I directed that the report should cover the current management of the program,” Rosso said, “the bilateral funding involved, and the process involved in the management of the funds with a list of all the service providers.”
In an interview with the Guardian a week ago, Hulahau said the allegations of corruption were false and motivated by malice.
“What is being said is not true,” he said. “These allegations are false, and there has been no evidence provided.
“The moneys have not been corrupted or misused, the money has been used by the service providers who have provided those services. They were used legitimately. There is no element of corruption.”
Australia funded PNG’s humanitarian program through a contract signed in 2021 by the then Morrison government, which was kept secret at the time and the details of which the Albanese government still refuses to reveal.
The agreement was to provide accommodation, health and other support services for refugees exiled to PNG by Australia as part of the offshore detention regime formerly run on Manus Island, before that centre was ordered shut by the PNG supreme court.
Most of the 64 remaining refugees and asylum seekers – the final cohort from the Manus detention centre – have been held in PNG for a decade and are in poor physical and mental health.
Money for the support program came from Australia’s $303m irregular maritime arrival “offshore management” budget and was sent to PNG’s immigration and citizenship authority, which paid PNG private contractors to provide accommodation, groceries, medical care and transport to refugees and asylum seekers.
But with slower-than-expected resettlement – in part due to Covid travel restrictions – the Australian money has essentially run out and the services required to support the refugees and asylum seekers have been cut or drastically reduced.
Some refugees have been threatened with eviction from their accommodation. Several PNG businesses, including motels where refugees are housed, transport companies and security firms, are owed millions of dollars. One Port Moresby hospital is owed nearly $40m.
In a letter sent to Rosso, the whistleblower alleged widespread corruption within the program – particularly surrounding the hiring of cars.
He claimed private vehicles were “cross-hired” so as to disguise the beneficiaries of contracts, and relatives of senior officials were allowing their private vehicles to be hired through a front company, then claiming a personal benefit.
The whistleblower also alleged that contracts were improperly awarded, without an open tender process, and given to companies with no experience providing the services required.
And he said PNG police’s fraud and anti-corruption directorate had started investigations into six complaints made against the PNG immigration authority but that these had been discontinued under political pressure.
A source with knowledge of the program said while the political attention on the allegations was welcome, “I have serious concern that investigations into the whistleblower’s complaint will be suppressed.”
And he said the refugees remained stranded, facing an indefinite, uncertain future. “Time is running out for the remaining refugees – nobody knows what will happen.”
Hulahau has said PNG plans for the majority of refugees – about 40 – to be resettled in New Zealand, while 16, who are dangerously unwell and in need of high-level medical care – will be flown to Australian for treatment. About 10 of the refugees and asylum seekers have expressed a desire to stay in PNG – most of these because they have married PNG nationals and have families.

The Gnanam Foundation
Tumblr media
Allirajah Subaskaran founded the Gnanam Foundation with his wife, Prema Subaskaran, and mother, Gnanambikai Allirajah, in 2010. The foundation is named after Allirajah Subashkaran’s mother. This article will take a closer look at the foundation and its mission to consign poverty to history, helping individuals, families and communities to achieve stability and financial independence.
The Gnanam Foundation provides vital funding for the poorest areas of the world and those in the greatest need of help. Headquartered in London, the Gnanam Foundation is a registered charity and NGO created with the mission of improving lives for people around the world on an individual, family and community-wide basis.
The Gnanam Foundation projects are based on a ‘teach a man to fish’ model that prioritises long-time stability over temporary improvements. The Gnanam Foundation achieves this by working closely with communities and helping them to gain their independence by providing medical care, shelter and safety, as well as inspiring and supporting people in developing their skills.
Education is an olive branch that enables communities to modernise, ultimately encouraging people to break the cycle of poverty. The Gnanam Foundation acutely appreciates that numeracy, literacy and skills-based learning is critical for future generations, helping to build bridges and save lives in impoverished communities and helping families that may otherwise remain trapped to escape the cyclic nature of poverty.
For those in dire need, accessing clean water and basic medical services can make all the difference in terms of preventing the atrocities that steal childhoods and devastate families. Despite a clear need for clean water and quality healthcare around the world today, it is sadly the case that the number of people globally missing out on these basic amenities is actually growing, with adults and children in countries all over the world missing out on medication that not only saves lives but transforms whole communities.
A home is much more than merely a roof over a family’s head, providing shelter from the unrelenting elements. Rather, the Gnanam Foundation appreciates that the home provides a place of emotional and physical safety. The Gnanam Foundation focusses on establishing local frameworks to ensure safe communities, providing support to enable those communities to maintain themselves while inspiring pride and the prospect of a brighter future.
In 2016, the Gnanam Foundation was recognised with the title Greatest Humanitarian Organisation of the World at the Global Officials of Dignity Awards, which were hosted by We Care for Humanity.
The announcement was made by Princess Maria Amor, We Care for Humanity’s president and founder. Speaking at the 2016 Global Officials of Dignity Awards as the honourees were unveiled, the Princess explained that the Global Officials of Dignity Awards Committee was amazed by the amount of humanitarianism that the Gnanam Foundation had accomplished over the years, pointing out that its works were evident everywhere, especially in the livelihood programmes provided to unfortunate families and women.
Her Highness acknowledged that under the leadership of Mr Subaskaran the Gnanam Foundation had all the qualities of the Greatest Humanitarian Organisation, highlighting his business acumen and philanthropic spirit to bring the foundation ahead of the game. In addition, Princess Maria Amor also paid testament to the heart of Allirajah Subaskaran’s mother and co-founder, Gnanambikai Allirajah, adding that the world had ‘a great ally in helping humanity’ in Mrs Allirajah.
When the American President John F. Kennedy was sworn into office in January 1961, he stood before the crowd at his inauguration, highlighting in his speech the power of man to ‘abolish all forms of human poverty’. The Gnanam Foundation was launched with this sentiment first and foremost, one that has been echoed by thought leaders and activists for decades since, from globally renowned musicians like Bono to Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa.
Headquartered in London with offices in the Sri Lankan capital, Columbo, the Gnanam Foundation was launched to take steps towards realising this responsibility, declaring that the time is up on poverty, starting today. Allirajah Subaskaran, his wife Prema Subaskaran and his mother Gnanambikai Allirajah launched the foundation with the mission of improving lives around the world by helping communities to achieve independence for themselves. The Gnanam Foundation facilitates this by providing shelter, safety and medical skills, as well as an opportunity for local people to develop their skills, helping them to improve their household income and with it their quality of life.
In addition to the Gnanam Foundation’s focus on improving healthcare, education, livelihoods and living conditions, the charity also responds to emergency appeals as and when they arise. The Gnanam Foundation currently has a presence in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Philippines, Romania, Sudan and Tanzania. Allirajah Subaskaran, Prema Subaskaran, Gnanambikai Allirajah and the Lyca Group family are committed to growing the Gnanam Foundation in the coming years, deepening its global impact and providing help wherever it is needed.

Frank Haskell, 93, co-founder of Barbara’s Friends to support children with cancer, passed away on Wednesday, July 19. For the past 28 years, Haskell worked tirelessly to help local children win their battles with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Through his efforts, Barbara’s Friends raised $25 million to support more than 10,000 children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Without Frank Haskell, the achievements we’ve made to advance pediatric cancer care in Southwest Florida would not be possible,” said Dr. Emad Salman, VP and Chief Physician Executive – Children’s Services. “Frank was committed from the moment I met him to making a difference. He has saved the lives of thousands of children, forever impacting their families and our community. His passion and tenacity and humor will be missed. Frank was a true champion and friend to all children.” Haskell retired in 1987 and relocated to Southwest Florida after a successful career at Burroughs Corporation in Boston, where he was the youngest vice president in company history, and Moore Business Systems in Dallas. He was invited to join the development board for the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in 1991.Haskell founded the cancer fund with his late wife Betty in 1995, naming the fund in memory of their daughter Barbara, who died at age 36 after a battle with cancer. Before Barbara died, she asked her parents to do more to help children fighting cancer, so they didn’t have to suffer. The original goal was to raise about $100,000 with the fund in her name. “Today, to have this wonderful facility is the greatest thrill of my life,” Frank Haskell once said from the Cypress Cove apartment where he lived since 2011 overlooking Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Losing a child of your own before you go is a devastating thing to have happened. This has kept her life ongoing. I think of her every single day.” The Barbara’s Friends Medical Library was established at HealthPark Medical Center in 1998. Barbara’s Friends Pediatric Hematology Oncology Center on the fifth floor of HealthPark opened in 1999 to serve children until Golisano Children’s Hospital was built in 2017. The Barbara’s Friends permanent endowment was established in 2002. Through a strong personal relationship, Haskell and former Boston Red Sox president John Harrington also founded the golf tournament in 1994 that has raised $15 million to date for programs at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Haskell’s ties to the Red Sox started in 1993 when he was hired by the team to operate the scoreboard at the Red Sox former spring training home at City of Palms Park. He was honored by the Red Sox at Fenway Park on his 80th birthday. In recognition of his service to the community, Haskell was named The News-Press Luminary in 2015. In 2016, Lee Health Foundation established The Frank Haskell Humanitarian Award in his honor to recognize outstanding leadership in the advancement of quality health care for the citizens of Southwest Florida. Haskell helped establish Barbara’s Friends scholarships in 2020 that are awarded annually to high school students who are childhood cancer or blood disorder survivors. So far, seven students have received scholarships. Barbara’s Friends funding also helped create Palmer the Turtle stuffed animals, coloring books and medical books, designed to entertain, comfort and educate cancer patients and their families. In March, the Haskell family donated the Haskell Total Immersion Room in Frank’s honor at the Naples pediatric hematology oncology clinic, the only one in the country, offering children receiving chemotherapy and infusions a totally immersive virtual reality escape during treatment. In Haskell’s honor, Barbara’s Friends will continue to advocate for children with cancer in Southwest Florida, by raising funds to support exceptional care at Golisano Children’s Hospital. #FlashbackFriday - Murder Among Friends (Charlie Kingsley Mysteries) by Michele Pariza Wacek #Review / #Giveaway @MichelePW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review when they were first released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.
Tumblr media
Murder Among Friends (Charlie Kingsley Mysteries) Cozy Mystery 4th in Series Setting - Wisconsin Love-Based Publishing (August 4, 2022) Paperback ‏ : ‎ 309 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1945363460 ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1945363467 Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B09VG4F9DL
Tumblr media
Five friends went into the woods. Only four came back. If something ails you, Charlie Kingsley likely has a tea to fix it. So, when Charlie witnesses a young woman faint on the side of the road, she has no choice but to offer her services. (Along with a cup of her famous tea, of course.) In no time at all, the young woman is back to normal, which is good news, as she's about to go camping with her friends. Charlie thinks that will be the last of it … so imagine her surprise when she gets a phone call that one of the friends is missing. Is the friend simply lost? Or did something more disturbing happen? Luckily, Charlie is not only on the case but fueled with tea, as this will prove to be one of her most puzzling crimes to date. Meet Charlie. Better known as “Aunt Charlie” from the award-winning Secrets of Redemption series. She's back, making teas and solving cases in this funny, twisty, cozy mystery series set in the 1990s in Redemption, Wisconsin. Dollycas's Thoughts Charlie met five friends when one fainted and she helped her. Then those five friends went into the woods. Only four came back. Much to the regret of the local law Charlie inserts herself right into the middle of these people's lives and their investigation.  Redemption Wisconsin is a unique town with an eerie history that draws people into its web usually with negative results. An old legend has brought  Naomi, Lynette, Raymond, Mace, and Sloan to Redemption and their lives will never be the same. The residents of Redemption are used to tourists exploring their community which is why Charlie Kingsley is so at ease helping a young woman who has fainted practically right in front of her. Some of her special tea is just the thing the woman needs. The author has set up the perfect situation to get her protagonist into the lives of these new characters. Charlie is independent and stubborn and no matter how many times Officer Brandon Wyle advises her that she could be putting herself in unnecessary danger she still forges ahead. The relationship between Charlie and Wyle is complicated. You can cut the romantic tension with a knife. The young adults we meet in this story are an interesting group. They are out on their last adventure before they enter the adult portions of their lives. Finding work and doing humanitarian efforts but their relationships are not normal. Lynette is the ring leader and she has a peculiar involvement with each member of the group. With secrets abound these characters evolve over the course of the entire story. The mystery this time revolves around the lore of Fire Cottage which seems to be cursed. Those that find it are never seen again. What a fantastic hook! I would expect no less from the town of Redemption and Ms. Wacek. But there is so much more to this story. It is like a great onion, with so many layers to be peeled away. One of the best things about this series of books is that the author has written them in a way that each one can truly be read all on their own. Yes, the core character's lives move forward but she doesn't spoil any of the previous mysteries. They may be mentioned but nothing is given away. So you can pick up this one and go back and read any of the others anytime you wish. They all deserve your time and I recommend them all but you can jump into this series anywhere to give them a try, and then you will want to read the rest and probably the Secrets of Redemption series where Charlie was introduced although those stories are edgier and not cozy mysteries.  Murder Among Friends is a fantastic story full of twists and turns. It was a book that was very hard to put down. I don't know how I got behind on this series but I hope to rectify that soon. Red Hot Murder, the sixth book in the series will be released on April 25, 2023.

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to declare Kogi a State of National Disaster, following the ravaging effect of flood in the state and environs. Bello made the appeal to President Buhari in his Independence Day address on Saturday in Lokoja, stressing that a lasting solution must be proffered to the yearly menace Bello said that such an emergency declaration would help to unlock the nation’s latent capabilities to respond more aggressively with more men, money and materials to the harrowing situation. “The President may wish to recall that he made such a declaration in response to the 2018 flooding – and the floods this year are projected to be much worse than anything we saw in 2018. “Thus, while thanking His Excellency for what the Federal agencies are already doing, I implore him to give us the help our people so desperately need at this time,” Bello said. Bello said the natural disaster had affected the nine local government areas of the state which were along the Rivers Niger and Benue, namely, Lokoja, Kogi-Koto, Ajaokuta, Ofu, Igalamela-Odolu, Bassa, Idah, Ibaji and Omala. He also noted that Ibaji LGA was almost 100 per cent under water, while the rest ranged from 30 per cent up and other inland LGAs also had some degree of flooding from smaller rivers and tributaries. While he acknowledged that the state had a serious and humanitarian tragedy to attend to, the governor assured every person, family and community who had been affected that they were not alone and that help was around the corner. He stated that even before the flood, his government had activated its early response systems to make sure that succour reached those affected in a timely manner. He narrated that flooding in Kogi happened annually which unfortunately the people had gotten used to the ritual of devastation followed by inadequate palliatives, if any. “As a leader, it is clear to me that I must make an attempt to break this vicious cycle, if not for all, then for as many victims as I can and I am making proposals for permanent solutions,” Bello added. Reeling out the numerous efforts which according to him have yielded varying degrees of success, he revealed that the most common sense and humane option left now is to clear human habitations and businesses from the banks of the Rivers Niger and Benue where possible. He added that his government would embark on clearing the lowlands along the entire flood-plains in the flood endemic LGAs which would allow the rivers unimpeded flow during their annual flooding. “In Lokoja, road shoulders along the banks of the River Niger from the entrance of the city in Natako will be widened to establish a sufficient buffer zone between the city and the river. “Ganaja junction to Ganaja Village road has also been recently re-awarded to a more efficient contractor and we will see to it that when work commences, efforts will be made to raise the road above the water levels mentioned,” he said. The governor also noted that lowland communities affected by the planned clearance would be relocated to higher grounds and structures which fall into the designated work areas would have to make way. Bello, however, assured that the government would ensure proper resettlement and rehabilitation of those who would be affected. He added that despite the huge burdens it would place of the already strained government’s resources would be money well-spent if it brought peace of mind to the people. He, however, noted that although such decision would have its own effects, but anything was preferable to the annual loss of lives and livelihood while assuring that his administration would continue to work for the wellbeing of the people and posterity in the state. [Music Video] Cry For Hope - Michael W. Smith
Tumblr media
This week, award-winning singer and songwriter Michael W. Smith has officially announced the release of his latest, instrumental single, “Cry For Hope.” The song was written when Smith was moved to bless Ukraine after witnessing the death and destruction that began unfolding with the Russian invasion. He has partnered with CityServe, an international humanitarian organization, in creating the music video to bring awareness to the plight of Ukrainians, along with highlighting local church efforts that are providing emergency relief. “I saw some images and video of what was taking place in Ukraine, and the casualties, and the women and children, and it broke my heart… it just wiped me out,” says Smith. “I found myself at the grand piano at my house and this melody fell out of the sky.” “It’s my heartache, my cry for hope song for the people of Ukraine,” Smith went on to say. “The need is great, it’s going to be there for a long, long time. And I appreciate the work that CityServe is doing, stepping up to the plate, and alleviating the pain.” “I think the whole prayer thing has got to go up about ten notches,” Smith added, reflecting on what the church can do to help moving forward. The full video of his performance, and his testimony about what led to the song, is available below. “We are moved by Michael’s deep compassion for the people of Ukraine, and for allowing CityServe to use his inspired ‘Cry for Hope’ song for our efforts to help these people in need,” said CityServe co-founder and CEO, Dave Donaldson. “It is our hope that this beautiful song will move us all to heed Michael’s challenge to increase our prayers ten-fold and to financially support this historic opportunity to share the Gospel in both word and deed through the local churches to the Ukrainian people.” CityServe International collaborates with churches around the world to provide emergency relief, and they launched CityServe Europe in response to the Russian attacks in Ukraine. They work alongside more than 6,700 churches in Eastern Europe and have helped thousands of Ukrainian refugees receive life-saving assistance since the war began.
