Embarrassment - T.Nott
Summary - Because they stayed at Hogwarts this year, the Slytherin gang and their significant others spend time together in the common room as they exchange gifts and enjoy each other’s company. However, the two Italian speakers in the group quickly find out that they aren’t the only ones in the building.
Word Count - 920
Warnings - Italian Speaking!Reader, female reader, use of Y/N, swearing, Snape makes an appearance, Italian sentences but they all have the translation, not proofread
Author’s Note - Day Eighteen! One more week left! My Italian is very rusty so I did use Google translate for most of the sentences. I haven’t used Italian in a long time so I thought it was time to dust off and get back to using it. I hope you enjoy!

It was officially Christmas at Hogwarts, the Scottish Highlands coated with a blanket of white snow as more fell from the clouds above. It was a picture perfect Christmas morning, the Slytherin gang all getting up and meeting in the great hall for breakfast first before they started their gift exchanges. Theo’s girlfriend, Y/N, had been the last to join them at breakfast, rubbing sleep from her eyes as she sat down beside the aforementioned boy.
“Buongiorno amore, come hai dormito?” Theo greeted his girlfriend in Italian. (Good morning love, how did you sleep?)
“Buongiorno tesoro, bene, tu?” She yawned as she leaned into his side. (Good morning treasure/darling, good, you?)
“Enough Italian you two, we would like to understand you too you know?” Pansy teased the couple, earning a flip of a certain finger on his hand.
“Bene. Mangi(you eat) amore. Happy Christmas,” The boy whispered to his girlfriend before planting a kiss on her forehead.
“Happy Christmas, Theo.” She kissed his cheek before eating her breakfast consisting of pancakes and eggs. As the ending of breakfast came, the group made their way back to the common room where they agreed to exchange their gifts. They gave their friends gifts first before significant others, Y/N running up to her dorm to get Theo’s gift. As she came back down to the common room with a wide grin, she held out the gift for him. “Per il mio principe,”(For my prince) She smiled, pecking his lips as he grabbed it from her.
“Grazie principessa,”(Thank you princess) He thanked her before tearing the gift open. She had gifted him a watch that he had been eyeing up the last time they went to Hogsmede together. “I love it, grazie bellissima." He kissed her gently before hugging her tightly. As they pulled away from the hug, he handed her his gift.
She tore it open to reveal not only a gorgeous golden necklace with a diamond encrusted crescent moon but also a photo of them on their first date that someone had sneakily taken. “Chi ha scattato la foto? Lo adoro, Theo! Grazie, grazie, grazie!” (Who took the photo? I love it, Theo! Thank you, thank you, thank you!) She asked her boyfriend as she threw her arms around his neck to pull him into a loving embrace.
“Draco preso(took it). Sono felice che ti piaccia, amore(I’m glad you like it, love),” Theo replied before connecting their lips again. They only pulled away because their friends were fake gagging.
“I heard my name and I would like to know why,” Draco insisted.
“The picture, Dray, thank you for taking it,” Y/N assured the boy before letting go of her boyfriend to hug her friend.
“In that case, you’re welcome, I’m glad I was able to take it without you noticing.” She giggled as she kissed both his cheeks in thanks once again. She made her way back to her boyfriend as they began to chat in Italian.
Much to their friends’ dismay, they continued to speak Italian back and forth. Their friends had given up telling them to try and speak English so they could all talk together. Pansy found it sweet that her best friend had found a guy with the same native language as her and a guy that treated her well. Blaise on the other hand was practically sick because Theo was constantly talking about his girlfriend when they weren’t together. Deep down he loved seeing his friend so happy but he would rather be mad at Theo for his constant rambling.
The couple had switched back to English as they were readying themselves to talk with the whole group rather than just each other. They got teased by their friends for the switch but it was all in good fun. The rest of the day was spent with their friends, joking and fooling around, playing some games and exchanging embarrassing stories about each other. The Slytherin common room might have been nearly vacant but it was more lively than ever as the friends mucked about. They had only quieted down after Snape had stormed in to tell them that some of their housemates had complained about their volume.
“Cazzo in culo(cock up your ass)!” Y/N swore, causing Theo to burst out into laughter.
“Posso parlare anche italiano(I also speak Italian), Miss Y/L/N. Detention for a week once the term begins, same for you Mr. Nott. Happy Christmas,” Snape spoke before exiting the common room.
“What did you say to piss him off?” Draco asked with a chuckle.
“Cock up your ass,” Y/N muttered.
“What was that?” Pansy asked, not hearing her friend.
“Cock up your ass. I didn’t know he spoke Italian! Sono così imbarazzato(I’m so embarrassed), Teddy!” She whined to her boyfriend.
“I know you’re embarrassed, principessa, but you should probably watch your mouth around professors. I do have to say that was the funniest thing I have ever witnessed in my life,” Theo teased her. She let out a groan as she hid her face in his warm chest, their friends laughing along with him in agreement. Y/N joining in sooner rather than later, the embarrassment going away quickly.
Although their Christmas was spent at Hogwarts away from family, the Slytherin gang had enjoyed spending it with each other. Having fun with no responsibilities for a couple weeks and having nearly the whole Slytherin common room and dorms to themselves. It was the best Christmas any of them had ever had.

Part one of "Some interesting devil fruit abilities for reader to have in the pirate au" (from someone who's never seen one piece so bear with me)
I'm not a native English speaker so these may have some mistakes in them, sorry!
Also, this particular pirate au was created by @mega-punani! Thank you for creating characters I can rotate in my head like popcorn in a microwave xx
I present to you: Pocket docter!!
Devil fruit: Tiny fruit
Reader can get tiny at will!
Thats it.
:)
...Well, okay, they have some outfits that shrink with them, and possibly some jewelry and stuff they keep on them at all times, like a little healing kit! Outfits that don't fit or they don't consider theirs wont shrink or grow with them. Embarrassing!
Probably a little salty that they gave up their ability to swim in the ocean for this... regardless of having had a choice in the matter. Its not a flashy cool power but it sure can be useful!
They can make really specialized tiny tools, get very specific parts of plants and other remedies for illnesses, and they can treat delicate wounds with extreme precision if needed! The tiniest needle and thread known to man is at their disposal.
This power could have reader in fight scenes but in someones pocket, passed around to heal during battle (a little risky but that's fun!) or captured by an enemy and then suddenly be gone (if there's no sea prism stones used ofc).
Not to mention some interesting interactions with the boys!
Sans put his hat on your head while you were tiny and laughed his head off-- its a pretty goofy sight and you're struggling to keep it near you against the wind. You still insist it looked better on you than it does on him and he kind of agrees.
You end up sewing teeny tiny little things into his hat whenever you end up trapped under there. Little stars and shapes, puns, messages... You've assured him you can easily remove them but he loves it. At some point he offers it as a makeshift bed for you if you ever need it, having added a tiny pillow and letting you use the scarf as a blanket. The sight of you asleep in his hat on his nightstand endears him to no end.
Dang hes already tall but Papyrus really dwarfs you huh? He will encourage you to not feel bad or less than others for being absolutely tiny!! --even if your normal form is about average or even tall. Everyone is small compared to him and he's truly nice about it so you forgive him for it.
I feel like he might accidentally forget you in the crows nest and then frantically get the crew looking for you while you're just chilling up there. He didn't forget to put your safety first up there so you've got a lovely view to enjoy!
(Hes no longer the shortest let's GOOOOO-)
Alright so Blue is the most dangerous man to be around out of all of them. Not out of malice of course! Hes just very strong and very energetic, and where Papyrus might punctuate his extravagant poses with acrobatics, Blue does so with his unbridled strength! Which meaaaans he might grip you just a little tight when picking you up, or that he'll forget you're near him while moves around, sweeping your feet out from under you. He definitely learns with time, but you're having much more fun being carried around while at your normal size.
You've pranked Stretch by pretending to be a rat a couple of times, scuttling from under a table or jumping at him suddenly because you are very funny! And also because he was trying to ignore your presence on the ship at first. What better ways to get along than to prank and bother him relentlessly until he talks to you? Unfortunately for his pride, it works, and the pranking turns into lighthearted inside jokes instead. He wont admit it, but hes much less jumpy at the sight of wandering mice and rats now...
I also think Stretch has some of the softest clothes on the ship, and that on some cold days, you can snooze in his hood/scarf while he plays some gentle tunes. Its a very relaxing time for both of you.
Red thinks you're so, so cute... now how can he convey this to you without sounding condescending?
Through trial and error of course! You can yell at him that hes being mean and he'll think its hot, but he will genuinely tweak his approach to you a bit. He'll call you kitten, but if you say you feel he's not taking you seriously when you're small he'll only say it when you're regular sized. Hell he'll call you boss or sir/lady if that's the only thing you can tolerate. And also because that's funny as hell.
You asked to help him with hard to reach nooks and crannies on the ship and its really bonding for you both. He will always check/clean whatever spot you need to reach a bit before you climb in (like a gentlemonster) and then he'll stare at your ass when you're reaching for whatever is inside (like a perv!).
Someone makes mother hen and chickadee joke.
Someone gets tossed off the ship.
It might not be the worst analogy though: Edge is quite protective of you when you're that small, and you can always turn to him when you're 'getting bullied' by the rest of the crew. Hide in his coat and stick your tongue out while he chides them, that'll show 'm!
Edge is probably one of the people who suggested creating a little room for you to do tiny crafts in so he doesn't accidentally blow your materials away when he walks past in a hurry. He has places to be! Its definitely not because he thinks you're cute and distracting nope--
He does kind of regret it sometimes when he hasn't seen you all day. Show him you thought of him by gifting him a tiny craft, yeah?
Reader might help Razz get super specialized tiny equipment to draw with, like incredibly sharp edged pencils or brushes with materials that you know will still draw well at that size. It could make his detailed works even better!!
...ifffff he lets you watch while he works of course. It'll help you get a better understanding of what he needs! Besides, its very easy to forget that there's a cute little human on your shoulder when you're concentrating that hard. Surely you wouldn't surprise-attack kiss him on the cheek will you? ;)
You get stolen/kidnapped by Cash often, for 'ransom' (food or favors from the others), 'evil purposes' (pranks) or 'for funsies' (attention). Depending on your tolerance/love for pranks he could be an awesome pranking buddy, or a bit of a nightmare.
He might scam people by selling you as a fairy in a cage and then stealing you back immediately, or by trying to convince you to help him cheat at games with a drunk bunch in a pub.
Of course, your ability to grow back to normal size ensures there's always some form of consent to these japes. If you've had enough, grow back to size on his shoulder or in his hand, that'll show him!! He's to lanky to keep his balance, even if he sees it coming.
Bear loves feeding you things when you're small, since most foods are tough to eat when your head is the size of a grape. For example, eating crackers forces you to nibble like a mouse would which is adorable to him. He also tries to make tiny sized dishes for you for a few reasons: one, it hides the before mentioned intentions of watching you eat behind just making you food, two, he's bored and tiny dishes are genuinely challenging, and three: it gets him genuine compliments and interactions with you, resulting in a lovely blushy skeleton.
Also the teaspoon thing would be so funny in this context lmao. You can buy or carve a pretty one to make him feel better about it if you want, and he would find it hilarious if you made and showed him tiny sized food utensils.
You pull Cinnamon around ratatouille-style on occasion. Or at least he definitely lets you lead him around the place while chatting excitedly about everything and nothing. He loves having you so close, and you've built up enough trust for him to know you wont embarrass or prank him. Not that you could pull off a prank anyway: his ability to see auras makes him the only person on the ship who rarely overlooks you when you're tiny.
You've both decided he doesn't tell the others where you are when you need some time alone, but he does feel better knowing you're safe on the ship somewhere, so you do give him a little wave when you spot him.
Then for some extra little tidbits:
If Blue or Red are being annoying while training with reader (as in using reader like a weight for training), reader will suddenly shrink to throw them off balance.
If you're the kind of person to avoid confrontation when you're in trouble then congrats! You can now blip out of place during any uncomfy conversation. This leads to things like the following:
If you nervously leave a lot of conversations by shrinking and leaving when Edge is grilling you, he might take the hint that he's being more harsh then you can handle and he'll treat you with a different tone of voice (to the best of his ability of course). He might use some excuse about his loud voice impacting your tiny tiny eardrums or something but we all know you're just a softy Edge <3
And if you're a trouble-maker like some of the gang, you might actually get on bears nerves enough for him to chase you! And as that usually ends with you shrinking to avoid getting hit with a teaspoon ladle, he just picks you up and puts you in his chest pocket. You are now officially in time-out, and you can either stay there and watch him cook or grow big again and get hit (or at least, thats the implied threat. You both know he wouldn't). He says you'll stay an hour, for punishment, but it only ends up being like ten minutes before he gives mercy. Unless you get all sleepy in his pocket of course...
If the crew would ever need to find and/or rescue you, they would send Cinnamon and Edge or Sans on the case: Cinnamon can find you with his aura vision, and Edge and Sans are respectively the most focused on the task at hand and able to pull you out of whatever place you're in without hurting you.
When the crew plays card games and you're to tired to play yourself, you'll sit on someones shoulder to give advice. Is it good advice? Possibly. Are you cheating by checking in on others? Maybe. Do you use your powers for good? If whoever you're sitting with has been nice, sure :) !
You're either considered a lucky charm or a menace, its up to you ;)

Hi, this is my first time posting fanfiction. Please keep in mind that I am not a native English speaker and be kind enough to excuse any mistakes.
This short fic was inspired by these two lovely pieces of art by @helloanthy and @biruesque:
Ship: Utena Tenjou x Anthy Himemiya
Contains: one shot, post-canon, reunion, Anthy is a badass now, Utena doesn't remember Ohtori but experiences lesbian feelings nonetheless
~~~~~~~~
Utena was waiting outside the store that she worked at, with her backpack slung over one shoulder. The setting sun gilded the usually dull and grey concrete of the parking lot.
"It's getting colder, I guess autumn is coming soon..." she thought absent-mindedly, casually stretching her arms one after the other. When she had mentioned that she is looking for an apartment during a conversation with her colleague Kokomi the day before, she hadn't expected that an opportunity would present itself so soon. Her friend had instantly lit up and started rambling on about some girl that she knew, who was apparently looking for a roomate right now.
Utena glanced at her phone screen. Half past six.
The girl was supposed to pick her up after work - so about 15 minutes ago - so she could see the apartment. And although Utena had assured that it's unnecessary and she is perfectly capable of getting there on her own, Kokomi replied that the roomate-to-be presented the idea herself and would gladly give Utena a ride.
"She'd better hurry up, it's gonna start getting dark soon..." she sighed to herself.
Suddenly, a pink motorcycle pulled into the parking lot and stopped just a few meters in front of her. The person driving the vehicle took of their helmet.
"Tenjou Utena, right?" they said, giving her a warm smile. For a moment, Utena forgot how to speak. The girl standing before her had skin of deep brown, glistening emerald eyes and tumbling purple curls, tied into a high ponytail revealing her undercut. There was a Hindu red dot between her eyebrows, which Utena recalled was called 'bindi'. She wore a truly punk outfit - ripped jeans and a leather sleeveless vest with lots of pins, in her ears and on on her face glistened various silver piercings.
"This is the girl?!" thought Utena, shocked and quite intimidated."Just what kind of people does Kokomi hang out with?!"
"U-uh, yeah, that would be me... Kokomi said you're looking for a roomate...?" she managed to choke out awkwardly, scratching the back of her neck with a nervous smile.
The girl nodded, unbuckling a second helmet from the seat and handing it to her. Utena suddenly realized in what way they were supposed to get to the apartment.
"I-I've never ridden a motorcycle before...To be honest, I was expecting a car " Utena explained, a bit embarrassed.
"Don't worry." replied the girl kindly. "Just sit behind me and you'll be alright."
This openly and assuredly tender, affectionate way she was looking at her made Utena feel bashful.
She let out a small breath and put on the helmet. She expected a longer conversation, some questions at least... Maybe the girl wanted them to discuss the details on the spot? Then again, the quiet between them didn't feel uncomfortable, somehow.
As she was getting on the vehicle, Utena realized how close to the girl she would actually be sitting and suddenly felt her cheeks burn. She also smelled a nice, distinctive, floral smell which enveloped the mysterious stranger. Despite how shy and flustered she felt for some reason, there was something that drew Utena to her. And not just because the girl was plain gorgeous, but also due to a strange feeling of comfort and familiarity that the girl induced in her, as if they had known each other for a very long time.
"I could use something to hold onto" Utena thought, considering grabbing the seat, if only to do something with her hands.
As if she was reading her thoughts, the girl spoke calmly:
"It's okay, just put your arm around my waist."
"Ah."
Utena complied carefully, trying very hard not to be too weird about it and ignore the pounding of her agitated heart. And suddenly there was that strange deja vu sensation again - as if she had embraced her this was a hundred of times before. Utena felt like she was forgetting something. Had they maybe...met in the past..?
"I'm sorry, but I don't think I caught your name" said Utena, suddenly realizing that.
The girl was silent for a short moment.
"Anthy" she said, quietly. Was her voice a bit sad, or did Utena just imagine it? "My name is Himemiya Anthy".
And she started the engine.
~~~~~
By the time they got there, it had gotten dark. The apartment was situated on the third floor of a nice-looking building, in a bit isolated area of the city. As Utena followed Anthy up the stairs, listening to the clink of keys in the girl's hand, she couldn't do anything else but wonder how she might have known her. Something in the back of her mind told her Anthy was important to her - so why was her mind blank whenever she tried to remember?
"Make yourself at home," Anthy said, letting her inside. Removing her shoes, Utena looked around the apartment. Apart from the short hallway, there were two pairs of doors, probably leading to a bedroom and a bathroom, and a living room with a small, open kitchen. The main room was decorated very nicely, in a way Utena had to admit she couldn't arrange herself. It was full of pots of plants, cute pieces of furniture and all sorts of knick-knacks that made it feel more cramped than it actually was, but in a cozy way.
"Say hello to Chuchu" said Anthy, picking up something small from the table in the center of the room. She uncurled her fingers, revealing to Utena a tiny, 4-inches tall, purple monkey, with big ears and a curled tail, which appeared to be in the middle of attempting to smallow a chocolate bar whole.
"Um...Hi, Chuchu" said Utena, extending her index finger towards the creature so he could shake it. It was so adorably small and goofy Utena couldn't help but smile.
"He's very cute. Is he your friend?"
Anthy looked at Chuchu with fondness.
"The best of all that I have."
She kissed him on his little forehead and placed him gently on the countertop of one of the cupboards, then walked over to the counter in the kitchen.
"Tea?"
"Um, sure. Thanks."
Utena sat at the table. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a terrarium standing by the wall. It took her a moment to realize that several other living creatures were also moving freely around the apartment.
"Who is this?" Utena asked, a bit surprised, pointing to one of them.
"Oh, my hen, Miss Milly."
"And these?" Utena pointed to another ones.
"Just my kitties, Theodore and Wolfgang."
"And this?"
"My dearest mongoose, Sweet Biscuit Jr."
"I suppose all the ants probably have names as well, huh?"
Anthy smiled at her softly.
"Would my animals be a problem for you, Utena?"
"No, I just... didn't think you were that kind of girl" she said, before thinking.
Anthy turned towards her, intrigued.
"That kind?" she asked, more curious than offended.
"It's just, because of the way you dress, I thought you were one of these, hardcore ones, not the type to care about animals and stuff" said Utena nervously, wanting to explain her poor choice of words, but realized that she just made it worse. "B-But for some reason, it feels right, you know?" She added quickly. "It makes sense. If anything, I think it makes you...even cooler..."
"Ah, a pretty, totally badass girl brings you to her house and the first thing you do is embarrass yourself!" she scolded herself in her thoughts, but the only thing Anthy did was chuckle softly and say "Thanks", before geting back to preparing tea for them.
For a moment a calm, comfortable silence fell upon the room. For some reason, sitting at that table filled Utena with a warm, nostalgic feeling inside, almost as if... she had finally come home. What a silly thought. Utena was an orphan, she didn't have any family that she knew of, there was no home waiting for her. And yet...
"Himemiya" Utena said suddenly, which she noticed made Anthy flinch. "This may sound weird, but have we....met before?"
The girl turned around to face her, with the warm smile back on. Utena expected an answer, but Anthy kept quiet.
"I'm thinking we may have gone to school together or something" explained Utena hurriedly, thinking Anthy didn't understand. "Like, maybe we were in different classes...I suffered an injury in middle school, I admit I don't remember much of that time."
Anthy stared at her in silence for a moment, her expression unchanging. Utena guessed she may be lost in thought, trying to recall something. But when she finally spoke, it was just a question, in a perfectly calm, although a bit deeper voice:
"Are you a forgetful person, Utena?"
This startled her.
"Uh...."
She didn't have a clue what to say to that. But she had a gnawing feeling that it was important, somehow.
".....Anyway" said Anthy, suddenly cheerful again, as if the previous interaction hadn't taken place. "Would you like some cookies as well? I just baked them yesterday."
"Sure..."
Utena followed Anthy with her eyes for a bit, puzzled, as the girl pulled out the cookies from one of the cabinets.
"She's avoiding the subject" she thought. "I guess I shouldn't be pushy, if she doesn't want to talk about it..."
She sighed and looked through the window. The moon was shining unusually brightly, the night sky was unclouded and full of stars. She noticed that the apartment had a balcony, and on it, through the glass, she saw....
"Are those roses?" asked Utena, standing up suddenly, something pulling her towards the balcony doors. She opened them and stepped outside, feeling the refreshing, chilly air against her skin. The balcony was, indeed, packed with pots and pots of beautiful, pink roses, which barely left any room for a person to stand comfortably.
"So this is where the floral smell comes from..."
As she was standing there, in awe of the sight before her, she heard Anthy step outside too and close the door.
"Are all of them yours?" asked Utena, smiling wide, genuinely impressed. "They probably need a lot of care... You must really love roses, huh?"
Anthy returned the smile, but there was something pained in her voice when she responded with a short, quiet:
"...Yes."
Looking into the girl's eyes, under the starry sky, she couldn't shake off the feeling that there's something she should say, something she should do, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't figure out what. Her throat tightened, some weird, intense feeling was building up inside of her, under her skin, she couldn't stand it-
"We should probably get back inside, it's getting cold" she turned around quickly, too quickly, and stumbled on one of the pots.
In a split second, Anthy lunged forward and caught her by the waist, her other hand gripping Utena's, bringing them close.
In that moment, a wave of memories washed over her, and she remembered everything. The academy. The crushing weight of the swords. The struggles they had faced together, the fights she had fought for her, the illusions, the cruel, cruel lies... All the suffering and the horror...And through all of that, Anthy's hand in hers, time and time again. The love.
"Someday, together..."
Overwhelmed, she felt her eyes fill up with tears. Upon seeing this, Anthy's face softened in understanding. She let out half a chuckle, half a sob.
"Utena" she said, her voice trembling with emotion, but so, so loving. "At last...we meet."
"You escaped. You got out of there."
"I wanted to find you."
Utena couldn't bring herself to say anything else, there was no need to. No words could ever describe what had happened between them, the feelings they had for each other. Instead, she intertwined their fingers together, and the act of it felt like putting together two halfes of a broken heart.
A loud, unpleasant whistling sound filled the air.
Anthy let out a small breath and smiled in amusement, lowering her gaze.
"The tea..."
There they were, sitting at a table again, with two cups, a plate of cookies, and ChuChu sleeping peacefully beside them. Anthy took both of Utena's hands in hers, and squeezed them gently. Right now, neither of them felt like drinking. No words were spoken that night. Just tears of pure joy spilled, and knowing, tender smiles exchanged. It wasn't a happy ending, it was hardly an ending at all. The next day, there were other hardships for them to face. But in that moment, none of that mattered, because these two girls found each other, and at last - were free. Finally, together, shining brighter than the stars in the sky.

why you should watch hamilton: an american musical
okay so hi i love this musical so much and even though i def see criticism about it (just like in everything), i genuinely think everyone, and i mean EVERYONE should watch it and here’s why
it is beautifully written. like really, lin manuel miranda spent 6 years writing it i think? and you honestly get it while watching it, the symbolism and the lyricism is sooo beautiful, the songs and the motifs reference each other so well
the songs are catchy and melodically great! i really love the instrumentals, especially those with violins and string instruments. the original broadway cast is also incredibly talented at rapping and singing. a lot of people don’t like lin manuel miranda’s voice (which i get, i’d say it’s an acquired taste for most people) but i assure you you won’t regret getting over that
the dances are great, the lighting as well, and everything about watching it! what i love is you always notice something new in the background which changes a bit your watching experience
if you like history and/or politics, especially american, this definitely will interest you! as a french teenager i had no idea about anything that was happening at first but i still really liked it!! the story is interesting even if you don’t like these topics (plus now that i have us history classes it comes in handy)
it also really makes you think about representation of minorities and the commemoration of historical figures. i’d say people have different opinions on these topics regarding the musical (i’d be happy to hear yours!), but even if you end up disagreeing with the choices made, in my opinion it’s a good way to make you think about these topics
also if you aren’t a native english speaker, it might be difficult to understand at first (i think there might be subtitles available in several languages), but it’s a really good way to improve your level! the vocabulary is sometimes complex or there are idiomatic expressions used which is great
also for people who don’t generally like musicals, this one is different from most because the story is almost entirely told by rapping and singing, which kind of removes the whole "randomly breaking into song is unrealistic" part that people usually don’t like about musicals. my sister used to dislike musicals and her 5 most listened to songs this year were from hamilton lol
so yeah i think that’s all (a really big rant about a musical that’s already well known but if some people discover hamilton through this post and enjoy it i’ll be glad!!)

Recently someone told me that it must be ‘so hard [writing stories in a secondary language]’ and I burst into tears. Of gratitude.
Not that I don’t value compliments and assurances, but sometimes all I want is for someone to understand and acknowledge how hard it is.
I write with several dictionaries open. More often than not, I ponder over short phrases for hours not because I don’t know how to express a thing, but because I don’t know how to translate a thing. It’s there, in my head, expressed and formed, and yet I struggle to write it down. I know thousands of idioms and proverbs, they’re always at the ready, but there’s a stretch of time between remembering one and actually using it; time spent on forums, reading up, asking, in order to make sure that there’s a corresponding one in English that does not have any other nuances or hidden meanings. I hear that something is a dead metaphor in English — yet it’s a combination of new and exciting words to me. Oops. I like a word and start using it extensively — then accidentally learn that it’s a no-no or, for instance, a filler word. Oops! I had been writing for years before switching languages, I had a style already formed and cemented. I had the cultural context and an audience. Favorite expressions, jokes, mannerisms, etc. And then ... Then I had to start all over. Items gone, levels gone; look at this dork in the starting zone, with a wooden sword and a flimsy chain shirt pulled off a dead paladin, and being pummeled by a kobold.
Paired with my brokey brain (who the heck promoted dysfunction to executive?!) it’s hard. Aside from a few initial lessons, I had no teachers but the internet.
I often see praises directed at people who do this, praises in the vein of ‘whenever I see a fanfic preceded by words ‘sorry not my native language’ I know that it’s gonna be superb’. Again, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with compliments, it’s just— I always feel an urge to inquire of the native speaker who offers this compliment: you do understand why, though, right? And why they’re apologizing, why that faux-warning is there? Because of perpetual doubt; it’s nearly impossible to assess yourself in a secondary language. Because of fear and shame; ‘they will notice each bump, and I notice none’ and ‘they all probably speak it so much better than I do’. And because of perfectionism; brought on, in part and sometimes subconsciously, by what could be called the immigrant effect — ‘my otherness means that I have to work twice as hard’. Compliments are awesome. Assuring a person that they have nothing to be worried about? Awesome.
Saying ‘holy forking shirtballs, that must be hard as heck’, though? God tier validation. Makes a person feel so heard and seen.
Of course I’m not complaining; it was my own choice. Moreover, choosing English over a ‘native’ 🤮 language that was forcibly imposed on me and has nothing to do with my ethnicity, culture, and upbringing, was an act of defiance on my part. Whatever anyone would say, however anyone would mock me for ‘trading an imperialist for an imperialist’ (not my words), I’m proud of myself for doing this. It’s like healing from an abusive relationship, step by tiny step (but healing is hard). I will always choose to see the positive side of English, to only perceive it as a unifying factor that brings people together. What Esperanto should have been. Kaj jes, jes, kompreneble I would have wanted Esperanto to win instead 😁but the world doesn’t work like that, alas.
Either way, no, please don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. Just saying that it’s really really friggin’ hard, and it’s very very very nice to have the hard acknowledged.
And hey, you. Yes, you, the person writing in a secondary language. I understand how you feel. I know how hard it is. I understand your fear and pain and doubt. You’re awesome and you’re a fighter.

So the option with the most votes was the hidden third option!!!
This was suggested by I don’t speak English. And same. This language is bonkers. Even as a native speaker, I mess up all the time.
But anyways, this one will be different from what you are used to. How so? Well, I guess you will have to read and see for yourself!
Nagito sighed as he shut his car door, clicking a button to make sure it locked behind him. Then began the slow trudging up the staircase and into his home with an armful of groceries. He usually had his supplies and groceries delivered, but the company wasn’t sending drivers out today. Something about a company party that everyone needed to attend. He supposed that was fine, as he didn’t need all too much. But he did prefer not having to carry the heavy items in himself. He wasn’t a very strong individual.
He first made sure his meds were in their proper places. That was the most important. Especially now that a certain someone would fuss at him if he wasn’t routinely taking them as prescribed. A perk of having someone who cared about him in his life, he supposed.
And speaking of that someone, he was curious as to what his current location was. So after putting the other groceries away, he pulled his phone out to look at his home security system. He flipped through the cameras, trying to find his target. And then he found him.
“In the pool, hmmm? Guess he wanted to swim. I guess I’ll go surprise him then,” he muttered to himself, tucking the phone into his pocket and heading in that direction.
He knew he was lucky in being financially stable. Well, much more than financially stable. This fact made itself obvious to him as he traversed through his mansion of a home. His parents had left him quite an insane amount of money in their will. It was unfortunate that they had to tragically perish for him to acquire such fortune. He didn’t know them very well, as they had hardly come home from their trips around the world for both business and pleasure. But he supposed he still felt bad that they were gone. He had no family left in the world.
But he was lucky again, as he wasn’t alone anymore. His house companion was a sure sign of that.
He opened the doors to the pool, the very faint smell of chlorine filling his lungs. Not a lot though, as his companion preferred water with less chemicals in it. Something he was able to provide, even in his enormous pool.
He carefully stepped over to the edge of the pool, looking down into the water. And at the bottom, he was able to see a long brown shape curled up. There he was. Now to alert him to his presence.
Kneeling down, he tapped his fingers on the water’s surface a few times, causing some ripples to spread across the entirety of the pool. Then he stood back up and stepped back, far enough away that he was safe from getting splashed.
With a crash, the water’s surface broke and a large shape breached. Two hands grabbed onto the ladder and pulled the human torso up. And a long brown snake tail followed, over 25 feet in length. Part of the tail was still in the water even after the creature had successfully grabbed his towel. Once his hair was dry enough, he turned to the homeowner. “Welcome back. Did you find everything you needed on your list?”
Nagito smiled. “I did. And did you enjoy your time alone? How long were you under?”
Broad shoulders shrugged. “An hour or two. Didn’t keep count. Just stayed under as long as I wanted.”
Nagito found his companion endlessly fascinating. Hajime, a northern water snake naga with brown scales and an affinity for aquatics. Despite appearing as a venomous snake like the copperhead, he was actually non-venomous. He tended to be huffy about this, but Nagito always assured him he was wonderful just as he was.
Hajime began slithering closer once he deemed his body dry. His scales didn’t need much attention since the water seemed to glide off. It was very convenient for them both and ensured he wouldn’t leave a wet trail behind when he left the pool.
But when he got close enough, the forked tongue darted out and Hajime got an annoyed expression. “You are trying to hide your cold, aren’t you? You are flushed and you smell slightly different. So don’t try to deny it.”
Nagito laughed. “I should have known I wouldn’t get past you. But I assure you that I am fine. No need for concern.”
Hajime frowned even more, slithering right up to him. “Nope. We are not doing this again. You are getting bed rest and I’ll be the one to enforce it.”
Hajime immediately scooped him up bridal style, slithering out of the pool and through the wide halls. Nagito couldn’t help the blush as he was held. Hajime was very much still shirtless and was an extremely attractive individual. It was enough to keep him quiet as the naga transported them to the kitchen.
“Okay. Take some medicine and drink some water. I’m not taking no for an answer,” Hajime stated as he set the human back down on the floor. Nagito, still in a state of surprise, did as told. He swallowed a few pills and drank a glass of water to wash them down. Once the glass was empty and placed in the sink, he was picked up again. Hajime again surprised him by taking them to the living room where a giant nest of pillows was. And before he knew it, he was in the nest and trapped by the brown coils. “There. Now you can’t go anywhere. You have to rest.”
Nagito wiggled his body, testing his mobility. But the coils squeezed him tight, not allowing much movement. He sighed as he threw his head back against a pillow. “Was this necessary?” he asked in a tired voice.
“Yes. We have done this song and dance before. Where you keep going until you collapse with a fever. You know your health isn’t the greatest. So you need to take it easy,” Hajime responded as he grabbed a pillow and rested his arms on top of it, staring down at the trapped human.
Nagito starred up into those reptilian hazel eyes. He knew that snakes eyes had no mystical abilities, but he did often feel hypnotized when looking into them. “You are so considerate. It’s too bad your kind words and actions are wasted on someone like me. A worthless human who can’t do-”
Hajime put his hand over his mouth with an irritated look. “Nagito. We talked about this. No self degradation.” He removed it after a few seconds, continuing his words. “And no, that’s wrong. You are worth a lot to me. You took me in after finding me. Others would have shot me or tried to catch me to put on display. I know how the world views my kind. As rare treasures. And while some do try and preserve, there are much more that would try to steal and tarnish. I’ve seen first hand how cruel humankind can be. I thank every star in the sky that he’s doing okay now. Because I honestly wasn’t sure in the beginning.” Hajime shook his head, as if clearing the sadness away. “But anyways, you provide for me and give me all I could ever require and want. So at least let me try and help you when you need it.”
Ah yes, he remembered when they first met. He had been hurt and alone, not a good combination. He had luckily been close to the edge of the woods to notice the giant home and the unlocked glass patio door. Nagito had been surprised to say the least when he found a naga curled up at his fireplace in the middle of winter with no warning. Some part of him, the lonely part, desperately wanted to help this creature recover and stay with him while doing so. So he offered his home and food to the naga, assuring that he wanted nothing in return other than company. And the naga had agreed, which led up to this day.
“You do more for me than I deserve. I still think I am the selfish one in this situation, but I shall let it go for now. Don’t want you to get grumpy again,” he teased, earning a glare.
“I do not get grumpy! Name one time that I have been grumpy,” Hajime challenged.
Nagito smirked. “Last week the store didn’t have your favorite kind of mochi and substituted it with the kind you hate. I recall you being in a sour mood after that. And a month ago, when the pool needed to be closed to be worked on and you couldn’t swim. Or how about whenever you shed? The days leading up before it, you aren’t exactly the happiest. I could go on. Shall I list more examples?”
The coils squeezed him a bit harder. “No. Stop. Why and how do you remember all of these!?” he whined, face scarlet with embarrassment.
Nagito laughed, which turned into some coughs. Hajime quickly recovered in order to shift his tail to help the human sit up. “You okay? Take deep breaths.” He loosened his hold so that the human’s chest and arms were now free. But he did keep a tight grip on the legs, ensuring that he wasn’t letting him get away. He also moved so that the largest section of the tail was positioned behind Nagito, propping him up.
“Your control of your tail is simply amazing,” Nagito commented as he got comfortable with his new position. He was now also able to reach into his pocket and grab his phone. “I suppose I am on bed rest for a while? May I use my cellular device, my dear nurse?” he asked cheekily.
Hajime rolled his eyes, but nodded. “So long as you aren’t up and wearing yourself out, I see no problems with you having your phone. But do try and nap at some point. That’s your requirement for being released.” He then relaxed onto the pillows under him, resting beside Nagito.
The white haired man couldn’t help but smile and reach over to pet the brown hair. “I understand. With how warm you are, it probably won’t take long.”
For the next few minutes, he checked his messages while stroking the brown hair. It was nice and quiet, the temperature beginning to make him drowsy. So once he shut his phone off and set it aside, he too found himself closing his eyes. His hand on the other’s hair stilled as he drifted off.
Being sick wasn’t fun. He had a lot of experience with feeling ill all throughout his life. But having someone there to care for and about him made it much easier. And with that comforting thought, he fell asleep.

I also have weird/dumb spelling differentiators for:
break/brake - affect/effect - capitol/capital - weather/whether - assure/insure/ensure - advise/advice - compliment(ary)/complement(ary) - emigrate/immigrate - loose/lose - stationary/stationery - elicit/illicit - passed/past - addition/edition - access/excess - base/bass - desert/dessert - peak/peek/pique - envelop/envelope - hoard/horde - hurtle/hurdle - moral/morale - plane/plain/plein - right/rite/write - pole/poll - prey/pray - waist/waste - wander/wonder - wrack/rack/wreck
this is not all of them, just the ones I thought of off the top of my head that I often seen in fics. (and I have plenty of others that I get wrong all the time)
The point is that I am a well educated native speaker with insanely high scores on vocab and reading. I am a writer and an author and a professional. English is freaking weird, y'all.
If you're not a native speaker and you write in this bastard of a language? You're amazing, I love you, and when I see words flipped in your writing, I smile! Because look at you! Using this complex language! and all you got wrong was one of the weird things I have to remember by going 'people IMmigrate INto the country'??
You're freaking amazing. Keep it up. You're doing better than lots of native speakers.

Oh, thank you for the voice descriptions btw. I do not have problems with hearing, but English is not my first language and seeing so many option made me confused a bit. Had some trouble understanding the differences between the adjectives, so I sat here looking them up in the dictionary lol. It's definitely not as big of a deal as for the other anon ofc, but still I appreciate it! ❤️
//I really like that we can choose Z's voice too, it's a nice detail I think ^^
Referring to this post.
Oh, my pleasure! And interesting, yeah I'll keep that in mind too in the future.
Also—as a native English speaker—let me assure you, I don't know the difference between them most of the time lol. I feel like irl people use most of these somewhat interchangeably. So, these are my interpretations of them, but however you imagine them is the correct way.

The Naruto 20th annivesary happened and it changed me.
Oh my God. I need to rant about this because I AM NOT CAPABLE OF BEING NORMAL ABOUT IT.
I know, I know. Everyone who has seen the 20 year anniversary special in SP’s youtube channel is overwhelmed with nostalgia right now and I can assure you I’m no different. But what makes me feel so over the fucking moon is that the reanimated moments are mostly between Naruto and Sasuke.
Again, I know Kishimoto has already stated that Naruto is about Naruto (of course) and Sasuke, progressing as a “pair”. Now even though I love SasuNaru and believe that “pair” might have a certain innuendo to it, the beauty of their relationship is that you can interpret it in more ways than just a romantic one. Platonic, maybe? Sure go ahead, each one of us has a POV and that’s okay. However, this 10 minute video makes it perfeclty clear that they’re each other’s most treasured/beloved/important person. YOU CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT THIS.
Sasuke and Naruto might not have many moments sharing the same page or screen time during Shippuuden, and yet you can still feel how much they influence each other without even trying. When “Sign” by Flow began to play I swear to god I almost fucking lost it because I LOVE THIS ARC SO MUCH FOR SO MANY REASONS - Naruto finally being recognized by this village, his fucking epic entrance, Minato finally appearing are a few examples that come to mind. But the main reason is the fact that during this arc, Naruto finally begins to understand Sasuke’s motives and why he feels the way he does. Which leads us to the whole Romeo and Juliet speech about “shouldering the burden of your hatred and dying with you”.
Tumblr media
I don’t care if you ship SNS, NH, SS (actually I do care if you ship those two but that’s a whole different issue) or whatever YOU CANNOT CONVINCE THAT THEY AREN’T EACH OTHER’S MOST IMPORTANT PERSON (or their “one and only” as Sasuke said lol).
My only complaint is that I wish “Diver” was added. The whole opening sequence, lyrics and the way it fits into Sasuke and Naruto’s relationship is just so perfect  *chef’s kiss* but I guess since this masterpiece was wasted on a filler arc, maybe it wouldn’t make sense.
I’m sorry this rant is a mess and might have butchered english language as I’m not a native speaker but as you can see I CAN’T BE NORMAL ABOUT THEM. My boys deserve so much better than that thing named Boruto.
TL;DR: SNS is my religion. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

From 進撃の巨人 to Attack on Titan - The Story of Title Mistranslation
Tumblr media
Shingeki no Kyojin. This name might sound foreign to some of you, I was one myself. Attack on Titan, however, is well known as the main title of the series.
During online discussions, I come to realize that the English title is a major mistranslation! Or is it?
Literal Translation
via Wikitionary
進撃 [shìńgékí]
(1) an advance, charge on an enemy
(2) to advance and attack, charge
の [no]
の is often seen translated as either the preposition "of" or the possessive (-'s), as a marker of possession.
巨人 [kyòjíń]
(1) (mythology) a human of very great size, titan
(2) a very tall person
(3) a person of extraordinary strength or power, bodily or intellectual
From the literal standpoint, the title becomes Advance of the Giant.
Why Attack on Titan then?
Sometimes I look at the English title and I cringe. The phrase is simply incorrect; however, I could see why this error would be kept and remain unchanged.
The rule of (wrongly, yet) Cool
For the better or worse, Attack on Titan does roll of the tongue well, even though it's blatantly wrong.
English as Second Language (or a case of machine translation gone wrong)
As seen from the original volume 1, the English title has always been "Attack on Titan", most definitely set by the author himself, his editor and the publisher.
As someone who's not a native speaker, I can assure you that these types of mistakes are usually everywhere; prepositions get misused, and we end up with "on" instead of "of".
However, I personally don't agree with some of these explanations. As if some localizers and/or publishers don't have a good, competent translator for one title. Entering...
Attack "on" titan
A Case of Misdirection (also gone wrong)
As you, yes you, the one who read through all of this wall of texts, would know about this series, Attack of Titan is a story of plot twists and shocking revelations, one after the other, sometime next to each other! So, believe me as I say, "Let's go conspiracy mode on this bitch". (Spoilers btw)
Tumblr media
Attack "of" titan
The author led us to believe that this is the stories about humanity's fight against titans, as seen in volume one of the manga, though I would guess the author use "Attack on" as same as "Attack against" (Japanese grammar?)
Tumblr media
Now we've come to realize that humanity has a chance; humanity has Eren as the titan shifter. I would bet that the author would change the English title in the later volume. However, that didn't happen.
As explained by Eren Kruger later on, every incarnation of Eren's titan always fights, all pushing for freedom. Again, this should be the title change, starting from this reveal, but it hasn't.
"The Attack Titan"
Tumblr media
Have you noticed that the Japanese title, Shingeki no Kyojin, has multiple meanings and reveal another interpretation without ever changing a thing? I'm willing to bet that the story goes like this:
"The Advancing Titan"
Tumblr media
THE ENGLISH TITLE'S NEVER CHANGED TO REFLECT THIS EARTH SHATTERING TWISTED OF THE STORIES AT ALL!
(1) The author set up some Japanese title for his "giant fighting protagonist" story, realized that it's has multiple interpretation and think that it would be an "in your face" kind of plot twist.
(2) He wrote that in; the story and the title (the Japanese title) was integrated such that each reveal makes a reader look at the cover and goes "OHHH", for 3 times! such revelations, many twists.
(3) English title is nothing to concern about, so he does some translation and put it in, to be cool. The twist could still be happening if he cares enough to change the English title to reflect that. But for what? His Japanese audiences could not care less about the English title (some alphabets below the title) being grammatically corrected or got changed later down the line.
(4) Later on, the manga got some clout and the anime boosted it to mainstream status. The title is set, so localizers would just translate the contents, thinking of that funny title yet never did anything to it.
And there we have it, the title that just good enough for marketing and referring to, and I guess that changing the name just for some plot twists is unprecedented and making the series more confusing when selling it to western audiences.
Refer to Eren's titan ability as we've witnessed Eren explanation; to see future events through its future inheritor or may I say, "To see the future in advance" is the titan true ability.
(Looking at you, Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3: The first part)

Then you have your opinion and I have mine but I just think that certain people opinions about his relationship and how he should be and act a bit parasocial ? If you get what I mean ? Saying things like decisions hurt or touch or even writing a whole paragraph from that anon overanalysing things just because he wasn’t very keen to take a pic for once even tho he took a lot of other pics in Lisbon feels very parasocial/intrusive ? That’s all but the essential and most important point I was talking about is maybe not overreact if he is trying to “disappear” a bit and maybe not appear as much as before considering he probably now understood that lost of people know him and “track” him ? Maybe he genuinely tries to finally set boundaries as he didn’t do before even when lots of people were crossing the line with him ? Sorry for the ranting
When I said touched, it's not like it was a parent who did something that was redhibitory. 😂 But yes, I think some fans may have been hurt when he unfollowed that Palestian account (even if it was connected to Ferrari). Touched that as a French person, he's not interested in who he dates and that she has ideas that I consider abject as a concerned person. And racist ideas. It's his problem and his life, and fortunately so.
My whole life isn't ruled by Charles' life, his career or him. Just writing that makes me very uncomfortable... 🙃 Yes, that would be really parasocial and very unhealthy.
I'm shutting down the blog and quietly getting on with my life, with my worries and my joys. I assure you that even in the world of gossips, I find some very problematic stuff, but I'll keep quiet.
I love F1, I'm a fan of drivers, I just want to know a bit more and really question myself about the person behind it and their personal evolution.
At the moment, I think Charles' fans, even if many of them keep quiet and you don't read it, are confused about the turn he's taking and his evolution. Everyone has their own way of expressing it, and I know it's a lot to read several opinions. I know that the accumulation effect quickly wears you down, and it gives a feeling of too much and exaggeration.
But I think it's also complicated for many people to express themselves in native english, when many of us aren't native either. The number of synonyms I want to use, and particular turns of phrase specific to my language, are often impossible in English. So you keep it simple, and it quickly loses the essence of what you wanted to say in the first place. Anyway, don't forget that too. I'm talking about gossip with native speakers, of my language, it doesn't sound the same at all. And that's just blabla.
Talking in another language put quickly a very neutral filter, too neutral perhaps. It also sounds immediately dramatic.
So, as I said, I can understand your point of view. I've seen more parasocial behavior coming from "purists", from kids and from people bashing on gossips than people interested in gossips. I think it’s more this kind of people who took the disrespect to ring at his door. Not people into gossips honestly.
As I said, gossips are both negative and positive at the moment, and are a good reflection of the networks at the end.
They put the human side of drivers back into perspective, and put an end to this very creepy idealization. And yes, I admit that some behaviors are too much. As with everything, in the end.
We use parasocial for everything and nothing I find, I think in the end each fan has a kind of parasocial relationship on a tiny scale, in the sense of a fan relationship that is created. It's still parasocial whether you like it or not. You're a fan of someone who doesn't know you at all. 😂 And the completely enlightened and creepy parasocial, where there you get into dark places. Often called erotomania, I think. Anyway another topic, another debate. I'm not a psychologist so well. 💀
Charles does what he wants obviously, but it's simply all these contradictory behaviors that raise questions. And as a fan I wonder, the person I've come to appreciate over the years just seems into something I don't really understand or support. After all, it's his life. Whether people bounce back or not is another matter.

The best ways to enhance your spoken English, broken down into 8 steps
Almost every single language learner's response to the question "what are your goals for learning this language?" is "to improve my speaking." When you're studying a foreign language, you'll have conversations with a wide variety of native speakers, including your instructor, servers at restaurants, taxi drivers, and even your landlord, so it's important that you feel at ease when you do so. There are strategies that may be used to enhance your spoken English in a targeted manner, just like there are strategies that can be used to improve your writing, listening, or any other skill. The following are eight of our top picks:

1. Speak, speak, and speak some more.
Let's get one thing out of the way first: there is no silver bullet for improving one's public speaking skills. That seems like it would be too simple, doesn't it? Simply put, the best approach to improve your speaking is to, well, practice your speaking! Make it a priority to engage in regular practice and to do so with a diverse range of individuals. Do you already call a foreign country home or attend school there? Utilize the thousands of people who are native speakers in your nearby community, such as your friends, their families, your workplace, your students, and personnel at places like coffee shops, supermarkets, post offices, and other places you go frequently. If you are learning in your own country, you can boost the amount of time you spend practicing by getting together with your classmates after class, finding a language exchange partner, or joining an online community of people who are also learning the language.
2. Give some thought to the conversations you've had.
Take some time to think on what you talked about after the conversation has ended. How did things turn out? How much do you believe you actually comprehended? In what ways did you feel comfortable talking about that topic matter? Have you come across any words that you are unfamiliar with? Simply putting it in this frame of mind can boost your self-assurance for the next time you have to talk (and provide you with specific areas to improve, such as words that you didn't fully comprehend the first time around). ielts coaching centre in faridabad
3. Read and pay attention.
Do you agree that in order to communicate, you need to use words? Learning vocabulary in class is beneficial, but there are additional opportunities for you to expand your knowledge, including the following: Listen to music, watch movies, and subscribe to podcasts to pass the time. Take the time to read some books, magazines, and blogs. When you are listening to and reading, be on the lookout for new and unusual expressions, slang terminology, and synonyms. Jot down this new information, and look up anything that you aren't already familiar with. You will have more "meat" to work with the next time you practice because of all of this information.
4. Compile a list of shortcuts.
The sensation that one is at a loss for words is a common contributor to the anxiety felt before giving a speech. Prepare a cheat sheet as a defense mechanism against this. Are you planning on visiting a physician today? Do some research on the terminology associated with your ailment as well as some frequent terms that you will probably require before your consultation. You can put this strategy to use before going to pay a bill, eating at a restaurant, interviewing for a job, making a complaint, or engaging in any other activity that has the potential to make you uneasy.
5. Pick up the phone and call them.
The vast majority of people believe that conversing over phone is very difficult. Why? Because we are unable to see the other person's body language or watch their mouth move while conversing with them over the phone, which are both important elements that aid in communicating. Beginning with simple phone interactions with close friends is a great way to build up your self-assurance before moving on to more difficult tasks like scheduling appointments or asking questions over the phone. (Now would be a perfect time to put tip number four to use and compile a list of questions and words that would be helpful to you when you are on the phone!)
6. Make a recording of your voice.
Although we are well aware that the vast majority of individuals find it uncomfortable to hear their own voice on a recording, it is a proven fact that doing so is an excellent approach to enhance your public speaking skills. Hearing oneself on tape reveals aspects of your personality that you might not be aware of, such as the fact that you tend to speak quickly when you're frightened, that you mumble, or that you swallow your "s's." On the other side, you can be pleasantly pleased to find out that people perceive your speaking ability to be significantly higher than you do. Take your recording to your instructor or to a friend who is a native speaker and ask them for feedback on how well you did. This will earn you bonus points.
7. Focus on learning complete sentences rather than individual words
Speaking in a range of phrases rather than utilizing individual words is yet another strategy that might help you boost your fluency. (You most likely do this very frequently in the language that you were raised in.) Change up your greeting by switching from the standard "Hello, how are you today?" to a more conversational "What's up, man?" "Hey, man!" or "How are you doing, mate?" are common greetings. (However, you should be aware that certain expressions will be quite colloquial and may not be appropriate in some circumstances!)
8. Have a good time
Let's not try to hide it. When you're having a good time, it's a lot simpler to take in new information. Introduce some lightheartedness into your public speaking practice by talking to yourself when you're by yourself, singing along with popular songs in English, doing tongue twisters (Try our top tongue twisters), or performing one-minute "impromptu speeches" on randomly-chosen topics (such as snakes, coffee, India, or subjects such as "If I ruled the world, I would...", "Three surprising facts about me," or "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"). Excellent preparation and excellent, hilarious fun.
