Eclipse told himself many lies. He knew some of the deceptions he fed himself were merely made for comfort, considered a coping mechanism to those more emotionally intelligent than he was. Lunar mentioned it offhand a few times, and Sun gave him looks that suggested his own agreement, but he never truly took those words into serious consideration. It felt burdening, to mull over the extent of his life and all that he’s done over the course of it. It reminded him of things he tires himself trying to avoid.

But sometimes, he gets caught up in those thoughts. Those aching reminders that float from one side of his head to another, always able to find the right spot to take all his focus at the worst time possible. Certain days, those sometimes become all times, constantly battling against him as he struggles to keep his composure against the incessant plague that haunts his mind. It’s utterly exhausting.

On those days, Moon always manages to find him somehow. May it be by chance or badly hidden worried intent, Moon always finds him.

Today is a bad day. A day filled with memories and reminders that sting at every wound he’s ever had, the ache in his chest becoming worse the more he lays, his own mind threatening to consume him.

Blood Moon isn’t here, currently, having gotten Eclipse’s word that he would still be there when they returned from their hunt. At first, he thought nothing of it- Blood Moon had their own things to do, he understood that. Respected it, even. However, once his head managed to get it’s grubby hands on whatever coherence he had, he instantly regretted letting them go.

And now, here he lays: under the blankets, trembling so much that the mere thought of standing makes him dizzy and nauseous. Despite his inherent weakness, his claws clutch vainly at the bed sheets, grasping so hard that they run holes into the fabric.

Oh, how his mind drags him on, teaching him the steps to a dance he already knows, but loathes all the same.

“KC!”

Eclipse stiffens for the hundredth time today, eyes growing wider the deeper he falls into the memory.

“KC! YOU CAN’T LET THEM DO THIS!!”

His systems begin to overheat, vents coming in quick, short intervals that do nothing to prevent his impending panic.

“IT WASN’T MY FAULT!”

He doesn’t hear the door click softly open, doesn’t hear the footsteps that approach him.

A hand reaches out to him, hesitating to touch his shaking shoulder.

“LET HIM GO!”

Eclipse jolts backwards, his hand flying up to grasp Moon’s wrist even so. The tips of his claws dig into the soft sleeves of Moon’s outfit, cutting holes into the pristine fabric.

“Eclipse! It’s just me!” Moon shouts, taking a step back after Eclipse registers who it is and that he doesn’t intend to bring any harm, thusly releasing Moon in the process. He shifts further out of Moon’s reach, pressing his back to the wall his bed sits against as Moon gives him a cautious glare.

“What’s your problem?” He snaps after a moment of pause, earning a tired look from Eclipse that almost makes Moon pity him.

“Nothing. Leave.” Eclipse retorts almost immediately, his gaze sharpening into a glare as he forces the exhaustion out of his expression. Moon looks dubious.

“You…can talk to me, you know. I won’t think any less of you, or whatever.”

Moon’s words strike a chord within Eclipse that seems to steal all the words from his mouth, since, for the next few moments, all he can do is stare. It makes no sense. How could he be so careless with his concern? Hasn’t Eclipse hurt him enough?

“Didn’t I tell you to leave?” He says instead, forcing down the nicer reply that festers in his voice box like an open wound. He can tell that his reaction only makes Moon more interested, red eyes focused on Eclipse’s own expression, waiting for the slightest shift or change, like a predator seeking weakness from it’s prey. Eclipse loathed that look. Especially when it was directed at him.

“Yes. And I’m choosing not to listen.” Moon responds in the most curt, sly way possible. Eclipse opens his mouth to change his demand into a threat, but he freezes as Moon steps further into the room, sitting quietly on the edge of the bed.

Eclipse grits his teeth. Why does Moon insist upon testing his patience like this? Doesn’t he understand how hard it is for Eclipse to control his temper? He’s not making his whole ‘redemption’ any easier.

“You have that thinking look on your face.”

Eclipse lifts his gaze, narrowing his eyes at Moon’s statement.

“Maybe because I’m thinking.” He snaps back, shifting further away from the other animatronic. Moon tilts his head the slightest bit.

“About?” He prompts, earning a snarl from Eclipse.

“What is it with you and getting into my business?”

Moon doesn’t seem as intimidated as Eclipse hoped he would be by the former-villains biting tone. Instead, Moon moves closer, agitating Eclipse the moment be begins to stir.

“Get out! Leave me alone! Don’t you know that-“

Eclipse’s words fall short, dying in his voice box with a soft crackle. Moon’s hand rests softly on top of Eclipse’s own- a gentle touch that, for some reason, breaks some of Eclipse’s walls down. He finds himself struggling to find another demand amongst the rubble his anger leaves behind.

“I may not be all that great with emotions and such, but I can tell you’re distressed. I have been told I play a good therapist, so…lay it on me, if you wish.”

Eclipse stares dumbly at him, at a complete loss for words as he analyses Moon’s expression, looking for any hint of mockery. When he sees nothing but sympathy, he finds himself beginning to tear up, of all things, in front of Moon.

“What are you doing? Why are you doing this?” He croaks, reminiscent of a time when he’d been in denial that Moon decided to save him. When the younger animatronic let him lean into the warmth his body no longer produced- when he felt that flicker of safety in the arms of someone he used to consider an enemy.

“It’s alright, Eclipse. It’s okay. I won’t let them hurt you again.”

He breaks down. Before Moon can supply an answer, Eclipse grabs him and pulls him into a hug, sobbing openly into his shoulder as Moon sits in stunned silence, wondering how to comfort him- if he should comfort him, or if he needed these tears to heal something much deeper than he ever could with his words alone.

The words stick like glue to Eclipse’s psyche, the comforting tone of the beast playing on repeat in his head.

But Moon would never know that tone. He only knows the sinister, devilish grin painted on the face of a murderer he thinks has only been seen in his head. What would he do if he knew that KC had a body of its own?

Would he go after it?

The thought only makes him cry harder, gritting his teeth together in an effort to stifle his sobs.

“When is this going to get easier?” Eclipse finds himself asking, shaking hands curling into the fabric of Moon’s shirt. The other animatronic stays silent for a moment, still stunned by Eclipse’s display of vulnerability, though he finds his voice before the situation can further escalate.

“When is what going to get easier?” Moon asks, voice quiet- subdued.

“This! All of this! The emotions, the self-hatred, the constant contradictions that bite back at me for every thought I have- just…just all of it!” Eclipse finds himself saying, words spilling from his mouth before he can even think to stop them. His despair morphs into a familiar type of anger that forces his hands to release Moon, pulling away in favor of vigorously wiping the tears from his face.

Stupid, stupid, stupid…he must think so lowly of you now- all these tears, this sadness, a useless venture in front of others! The judgement will be well earned!

Moon’s reply lacks the disgust that Eclipse expected to hear behind his words, slowly lifting his gaze to focus back on the night-themed jester at his side. His expression is conflicted- not with disdain or frustration, but with empathy and respect. It’s as if this show of emotion from Eclipse offered Moon a different perspective on the other that he hadn’t quite considered before.

The thought brings a slight bit of confusion to Eclipse’s face.

“But…all these changes since you first started to work towards being better…it shows that you’re trying. Personally, I think you’ve really improved since then. Those contradictions and self-hatred show that you regret what you did before. Which means you’re better. Being emotional comes with change, and this is a big change for you. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m…” Moon pauses at that, carefully contemplating before carrying on; “I’m sorry that your mind is retaliating in a way that hurts you. You don’t deserve that. But…you aren’t alone. I find myself lost in the same concepts that you’re struggling with- maybe even for the same reasons, as well. I used to have the same sort of ideals that you did, and it was a long and hard process of breaking those habits. Some of them are still there to this day. Even so, I’ve found that the one true consolation that I have changed is that…people love me. The others listen- they care about what I have to say. Just like I’m sitting here listening to you. You have changed, Eclipse. Your mind may tell you differently, but…it knows you in a different way than I do. You view yourself differently than everyone else does. I’m not saying that you should try and change the way you see yourself, I’m just saying that…it’s okay. You’re okay.”

Eclipse listens in silence, his entire body stiff as a statue. He keeps thinking that Moon will stop and shrug off what he’s saying- make some crude remark to lighten the mood in the darkest way possible, but…he doesn’t. Instead, he just keeps going. With each added word, the tension in his chest eases more.

By the end of Moon’s speech, Eclipse finds himself almost smiling again. The slightest upturn to his mouth, carrying a whisper of hope that doesn’t quite play in his voice box, but touches his core nonetheless.

And, for the first time all day, his mind is at ease. No stretch of gratitude that he could offer would truly encompass the relief he feels at that realization.

“You know…I’d almost assume you think fondly of me after all that.” Eclipse jests, earning a soft, sarcastic sounding chuckle from Moon. But Eclipse can tell it isn’t quite fake- the amusement in Moon’s eyes proves that so.

“Don’t push your luck.” Moon drawls.

When Blood Moon does return later in the day, apologizing profusely for taking as long as they did, they find both Moon and their dad curled up against one another, sleeping soundly in the comfortable silence of the room. The twins can’t help the small, fond smile that rises onto their face as they clamber up onto the bed themselves, snuggling up against Eclipse, stirring their father the slightest bit in doing so.

Reflections of a student Occupational Therapist

Immersing oneself in such environments promotes a greater capacity for empathy, which transcends mere sympathy from a distance. To be present and take action in delivering healthcare services to all community members has proven to play a significant role in uplifting individuals within their community.  

Prior to engaging in community service, recommendations were formulated with limited information regarding their feasibility within the individual's environment. Currently, we possess the capacity to offer more practical and informed recommendations, thanks to the opportunity granted to us for deeper exploration of the environments of those under our care. Throughout the course of community service, my proficiency as an Occupational Therapist (OT) has significantly improved, enabling me to not only suggest recommendations but also actively participate in their implementation. These recommendations have gained a heightened sense of realism, as we are granted access to the genuine experiences and challenges faced by individuals in the communities. As participants in their lives, we bear witness to the injustices they endure, including those rooted in racial inequalities and the enduring consequences of historical disadvantages.

In a professional context, it has become evident that challenges are an inherent part of one's journey, and the true measure of one's strength lies in their positive response to these challenges. I have been actively working on improving my weaknesses, progressively discovering the extent of my capabilities. One significant challenge I have confronted and continue to refine is my fear of public speaking in formal settings. Above is an image of a parent and teacher workshop that I presented at. Many concerns from teachers that we have interacted with are that parents are not involved in their children’s scholastic development. This reminds one that it takes a village to raise a child. Community members such as neighbours, and even better-performing peers can always be of assistance in the development of a child.

An ethical principle  from the hpcsa is beneficence. This has prompted me to not turn anyone back who is looking to be served. I have always been motivated to  listen to what they have to say and intervene or provide advice where I can. One has had to learn to not be consumed by compassion fatigue. I realised that it is important to ensure that my mental and physical health is intact so that I can provide services effectively for those in need of health promotion.  To continue to benefit all people from all walks of life one has to make comprehensive and easily accessible handovers for those that will follow. As well as recommendations with specific guidelines. This will ensure that there is no duplication of services and there is progress to be of benefit to the individuals and community at large.

The way forward is acknowledging that I am a lifelong learner, and this is not the end, it is just the beginning. Learning does not only come from written resources  but also from people, the  people we treat, community members and the communities we work with. The key is to not discard of those academic, practical and life lessons, we should still be able to look back and use them in times of need.

This work examines the childhood obesity epidemic, its foundations, and strategies for reducing its prevalence.  There is currently a plethora of information, opinions and sometimes contradictory data surrounding the subject.  Although overweight and obesity has existed presumably since the dawn of mankind, it has been relatively uncommon in most societies.  Historically, only the wealthy have had the ability to overindulge.

However, in the last several decades the incidence of obesity has increased substantially among adults and children.  Thus, it is clear that something(s) about our society creates an environment in which obesity is commonplace.  But what and to what extent is not as clear.  Consequently, this review seeks to consolidate the literature by addressing the causes and effective treatments for childhood obesity prevention in a way that provides an accurate informational resource for stakeholders who may include health professionals, parents and community members with a commitment to engage this challenge.  We need to find solutions for childhood obesity.

Is Childhood Obesity an Epidemic?

Obesity is a condition in which an individual suffers from an excess of body fat and associated health disparities. Since its prevalence is becoming continuously more frequent in the developed world, it raises concern. Consequently, in the United States childhood obesity statistics are quite appalling.  16.9% for children. Perhaps this is little surprise given that 34.9% of adults are obese. Thus, the World Health Organization defines it as a global epidemic. 1, 2, 3

Becoming obese is easier than ever, particularly for children.  Activity levels in general have been declining for decades and foods high in sugar and fat are more common than ever before. 4 In fact, the rate of obesity among children in the United States in 1963 was a mere 4.2%.  It then grew to 15.3% by the turn of the century.  It is not only a significant cause of disease and ultimately death in the United States, but is also very costly.  At the present time, healthcare expenditures corresponding to obesity are $190 billion annually in the United States. 5  Childhood obesity is of particular interest as children that are overweight are as much as 6.5 times more likely to remain so in their adulthood years. 6

A Thorough Review of the Available Literature

Consequently, a review of the literature reveals three general factors which contribute to childhood obesity.  Specifically, they are genetics (including the phenotypic manifestation resulting from environmental factors) , overeating and limited exercise.  Research also suggests that, although not a simple task, managing each is practical given the proper resources and support.

The Causes  - Is Childhood Obesity the Parent's Fault?

Not surprisingly, genetics play a role in obesity and determine the level of predisposition that one possesses for the disease. Humans have a natural propensity to store fat for use as energy, but in the modern world it is much easier to consume many more calories than can be (or are) expended, thus promoting fat storage. 7  This feature of the human race is clearly more prominent in some individuals than others, but only rare cases of hormonal imbalances virtually guarantee the afflicted will suffer from obesity. 8

Familial Studies and What They Show About Obese Kids

Furthermore, multiple studies of twins, siblings and adoptees, indicate that genetics contributes from 40%-70% of inter-individual variation with respect to obesity.  Thus, the obese phenotype clearly runs in families with some family units that tend to struggle with weight problems and others that do not.    While there is no doubt that genetics contribute to weight loss, it is still not clear what genes are involved and to what extent.  The genes that probably affect obesity only contribute a very small amount toward the actual disease, approximately 0.17kg/m2 according to one study.  So far 42 genes have been identified as “likely” being associated with BMI and more are expected to be discovered. 9

How Dopamine Affects a Child's Weight

Additionally, the influence that genetics have on BMI can be seen through one study that found a correlation between dopamine release and obesity.  Those with a greater genetic tendency to activate the “reward circuitry” of the brain through the release of dopamine tended to have a higher BMI than those whose stimulation-level was lower. 10  Another study suggests that levels of leptin release, the hormone that determines fat storage levels and is ultimately controlled by genetic factors, plays a role as well.  Consequently, children born with abnormal leptin levels quickly gain weight.  And although the condition can be treated by injections, those who suffer from leptin deficiency experience hyperphagia (abnormally large appetite), impaired satiety (feeling of fullness) and fat deposition.  These effects of course lead to an increased intake in calories and fat storage and result in childhood and later adult obesity. 3(p.37)

Accordingly, what is known for certain is that genetics is a contributing factor in childhood obesity.  Precisely which genes play a role and to what extent still remains somewhat unclear.  Surely further studies will tell. 11

Sedentary Lifestyles Contribute Immensely To the Childhood Obesity Epidemic in America

Many children overeat, whether they have a genetic tendency toward obesity or not.  A commonly sedentary lifestyle only provokes the circumstances and society additionally provides many temptations. For instance, these may include fast food, high-fat, low nutrient school lunches , vending machines full of treats and soda in schools and unhealthy snacks at home. 12 The CDC reports in a 2013 study that poor eating practices that are thought to promote obesity such as drinking soda, avoiding fruits and vegetables and skipping breakfast are common among today’s youth. 13   Furthermore, research has linked this mode of lifestyle to an increase in calories and fat and a corresponding decrease in the consumption of fruits and vegetables.  This pattern seems to be established prior to adolescence. 12, 14 Such frequent exposure to so many unhealthy, but appetizing options establishes an environment that makes the battle against childhood obesity difficult to win.

Kids that are Obese are Almost Never Getting Much Exercise

Correspondingly, the third risk factor for childhood obesity is lack of exercise.  The activity–level of children has been declining since the 1970’s and currently only about one-third of children are ‘at play’ for at least 60 minutes.  Not surprisingly, the children of today illustrate this perpetual deterioration quite well.   In fact, a recent study in which the aerobic capability and endurance level of youngsters was tested illustrates this.  Researchers discovered that their young subjects took 90 seconds longer to run one mile than they did in the 1970’s. 15

A poor emphasis on physical activity in school and at home are major contributing factors to this trend as well as a decrease in “grass roots” sports and time spent in physical activity during and after school. 16   In fact, the CDC reported on a survey of high school students and found that 14% are obese.  Yet more than half did not attend a physical education class in a typical week and fewer than 50% played on at least one sports team throughout the school year. 13

Television Watching Contributes to a Sedentary Lifestyle and Lack of Exercise

Additionally, television has been a major contributor to the childhood obesity epidemic.  It promotes a sedentary lifestyle that often continues into adulthood and also leads to an increased risk of smoking and high cholesterol.  According to the Kaiser Family Foundation report of 2010, children watch an enormous 10.45 hours of media per day, 50.4% higher than in 1999.17

The level of inactivity associated with television viewing for greater than two hours per day during childhood and adolescence is attributable to approximately 17% of the overweight problems.  It also accounts for 15% of the poor fitness, 17% of the smoking and 15% of high cholesterol among 26-year olds, according to a study done by Hancox et al 18.  Other studies have shown that children who watch television for more than five hour per day are at a risk of obesity as much as five times greater than those that watch two hours or less per day. 3

Advertising in Television Targets Children

While not all studies find a strong positive correlation between television viewing and childhood obesity, advertising may explain this relationship.  Since children and adolescents see the obesity-promoting food and drinks through advertiements, they ultimately obtain and consume them.  Thus  the problem is perpetuated  beyond the simple sedentarianism associated with television viewing 19, 20(p.123).  This theory is further bolstered by a 2012 study that involved 12,600 children in grades 5-10 that found that kids who watched the most TV tended to have the worst eating habits.  Of course this does not prove that TV causes poor eating, but rather that a strong correlation exists between the two.  However, this is a figurative one-two punch since television watching by its nature is a sedentary activity, therefore promoting obesity.  But poor eating habits associated with watching television also fosters even further weight gain. 20(p.123), 21

Who Has More of an Obesity Problem, Boys or Girls?

Black and Hispanic children are also more likely to get less sleep than white children. Not every rhyme and meter worked — recall that GPT has never heard a sound but inferred these concepts from predicting words in sentences — but it clearly endeavored to construct iambic pentameter and follow the appropriate rhyme scheme. It stayed on topic. It was written poetically.

Compelling cognitive abilities

In my limited search, I couldn’t find any prior usage of “dreams were loud” as a metaphor (only people complaining about being woken by their dreams). It’s an obvious metaphor, relatively shallow as they go, but it’s genuine.

We can point to the many poems that fed GPT-3 and question what is truly novel in its output. But if the building blocks are known, the intersections are unique and new. And putting known building blocks together into novel patterns is a compelling cognitive ability.

Although the training data volumes involved are massive, the regularities were all discovered by these networks — the rules of sonnets and limericks, the linguistic quirks of pirate-ese. Programmers did not carefully generate training sets for each task. The models found the rules independently.

Where does GPT-3 lack? The above stanza is adequate as poetry but doesn’t surprise or challenge us. When it imitates a pirate, it doesn’t add new nuance to the role. GPT-3 was trained on approximating the most probable words in sentences. We can push it towards more random outputs — not the most likely but the 5th most likely — but it strongly follows the trail of what’s been said repeatedly.

It can explain known tasks well but struggles to give novel suggestions and solutions. It lacks goals, its own impetus. It lacks a meaningful distinction between what’s true versus a likely thing to be said. It has no long-term memory: Generating an article is possible, but a book does not fit in its context.

More nuanced language understanding

At each new scaling factor of language models and each research paper hot off the press, we observe a more nuanced understanding of language. Its outputs get more varied, and its abilities more extensive. It uses language in increasingly obscure and technical domains. But the limitations and the tendency towards banality persist.

I have become increasingly convinced of how powerful self-attention is as a neural network concept for finding patterns in a complex world. On the flip side, the gaps in the computer’s understanding become clearer in comparison to the rapid improvement in so many areas.

Looking at GPT’s understanding of pronouns in semantically ambiguous situations, its sense of humor, or its complex sentence structures, I’d surmise that even the current version is sufficient for general language understanding. But there’s some other algorithm as yet un-invented, or at least a particular combination of existing algorithms and training tasks that are needed to approach actual intelligence.

Understanding language: Identifying meaningful patterns

To return to the initial prompt: Whether it’s the unscientific wonder at seeing a Shakespearean sonnet arise from the dust of simple word prediction tasks, or the steady erosion of the human gap in myriad tasks to plumb the depth of artificial understanding of language, the language models in use today are not just a parlor trick. These processes do not just parrot human language but find the meaningful patterns within it — be it syntactic, semantic, or pragmatic.

Yet, there’s something more going on in our head, even if it’s just the same techniques self-applied at another level of abstraction. Without some clever new technique, we’ll continue banging our heads on the limitations of our otherwise impressive tools. And who can say when the bolt of inspiration will strike there?

So no, true AIs have not yet arrived. But we’re significantly closer than we were before, and I predict when it does, some variation of self-attention and contrastive learning will be a significant portion of that solution.
