Book recs

Literally just every book I reference in Rose and Rot as I remember them. I'm linking to goodreads, for you, please enjoy! :D

The Complete Brother’s Grimm. (obviously) Has its fingerprints all over this story. I go into detail on certain chapters when I borrow something directly from Grimm. The beauty of these stories is that they are in the public domain, so have fun reading them for free!!

East of the Sun, West of the Moon Title of chapter eighteen, it’s the name of a fairytale I like. And that phrase has been stuck in my head since June whenever I think about this story. It's where the forest is located in my brain!

Aarne-Thompson-Uther Folklore Index For tale-types and tropes. I consulted various indexes online a lot.

Argumentum Ornithologicum - Jorge Luis Borges The title of chapter 2 comes from this story.

The Library of Babel - Jorge Luis Borges Goro finds a part of Borges’ library at the end of chapter eighteen.

The Word for World is Forest - Ursula K LeGuin Title of chapter five, I'm always going to recommend reading at least a little Le Guin at some point in your life.

Exhalations - Ted Chiang Mentions obliquely in chapter twelve. Ren finds a book in Goro’s abandoned apartment and it is implied to be this.

Stories of Your Life and Others - Ted Chiang Goro mentions reading this in chapter thirteen.

The City in the Middle of the Night - Charlie Jane Anders Goro quotes one of my favorite lines of all time ‘ 'these things go from being "moments that I need to survive right now" to "things that will always have happened to me.'’ in chapter sixteen. I think about it a lot.

Hell is the Absence of God - Ted Chiang A quote is a future chapter title. Guess which quote! I love this story so much, you all have no idea.

Invisible Cities - Italo Calvino At the end of chapter eighteen Goro thinks of finding Calvino’s invisible cities on the other side of the ocean.

Piranesi - Susannah Clarke Just a big influence on the story. If you remember Goro’s hall of statues, that’s a direct line from Piranesi to my brain. My favorite quote is reserved as a future chapter title.

Goblin Market - Christina Rossetti Not mentioned but the influence is there!

House of Leaves - Mark Z Danielewski Goro mentions reading this in chapter thirteen. A quote ‘’You might try then, as I did, to find a sky so full of stars it will blind you again” is a discarded chapter title for chapter twenty-four.

Walden - Henry David Thoureau Goro mentions reading this, and a quote is the title of chapter twenty-three.

Ursula K LeGuin - Various works Mention in chapter 13 I think the entirety of the Hainish Cycle, with an emphasis on ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’ and ‘The Dispossessed’. I will also toss in Earthsea, specifically The Tombs of Atuan.

🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?

My favorite has gotta be the moment in At Your Service when Goro and Ren realize they accidentally synched their surprise sexy outfits. When I first thought of that idea, I cackled out loud at the image of them just standing there, staring at each other in full butler/maid getups. Also I just love putting Goro in humiliating situations.

💖 What made you start writing?

I’ve been writing forever, as long as I can remember. It’s just always been an innate hobby of mine. I didn’t start writing fanfic though until I discovered Shuake. I had considered writing fic before, but no other ship compelled me to write as strongly as this one did. There were just so many interesting ways their relationship could develop and I had such a clear idea in my mind of what I wanted to see from them.

❌ What's a trope you will never write?

Love triangles, the bane of my existence!!! Maybe I’m biased because I am an extremely monogamous person, but love triangles that cause conflict just frustrate me. Now, irrationally jealous characters? Hell yeah, I’m in. It just has to be jealousy because of a perceived threat, not an actual one.

As the faithful butler of Kobayashi mansion went out to check up the residence’s entrance in the late morning of his young mistress’s birthday, there he was greeted by a certain man in his sixties.

“Good morning, sir. Perhaps you are Mr. Eguchi, I take it?”

With a formal smile on his face and the neat dark-colored suit he wore, Goro Eguchi could ultimately guess that this man before him was maybe someone from the similar profession.

“The name is ‘Chishio’ —Just a mere assistant of Mr. Fuyugami from Nara Division. And I came here today to sent their birthday gifts and blessings to the young lady Shinomiya.”

He then handed him the two boxes tidily wrapped in the furoshiki-style piece of clothes.

“This one in the box is a nightlight chosen by Mr. Kanata, while this one are confectioneries from Mr. Tomoharu… Even if they look just like some beautiful stones, they’re edible and are called ‘Kohakutou’ , the crystal candies mainly made from agar-agar and sugar. Hope lady Shinomiya doesn’t really mind some sweets.”

After explaining the details of the present from his young master’s team, in that sudden, both of them heard a strange voice from below.

“Meowwwrrr”

The butler looked down to find the source of voice and found a little kitten with a black collar coiling around Chishio’s legs while making a loud meow as if she wanted some attention from him.

Also noticing what had been sneakily following him all the way here to Shinagawa, the older man sighed.

“Ha… Mr. Eguchi, please pardon me for my early leave soon. As you can see, the children at my young master’s place have recently decided to keep a cat with them and sometimes this little one loves to follow me and her caretaker around to other divisions. Maybe it is now the time for her snacks, so I’ve to take her home. Mr. Kanata must be worried sick about her already.”

“Of course, I wish you both a safe trip, farewell.” Goro nodded and gave a small bow to the other man and closed the door as he left. Turning around, he was immediately greeted by the sight of the birthday girl standing behind him and while any other person would’ve screamed or jumped in fright, the butler merely gave a soft smile, not at all frightened and honestly more amused than anything. “Ah, Miss Sumire, impeccable timing, these gifts came in just from you, they’re from-“

“Nara Division.” Sumire cut him off, looking at the gifts with peculiar eyes. “Yeah, I know. I saw everything from the cameras, that was a cute cat by the way.” The anarchist held her hands out and the butler graciously placed the gifts in her hands, “Thank you, Goro.” She smiled and the older man smiled back, placing a hand above his heart and bowing. “Of course, young Miss.”

Sumire popped a piece of Kohakutou in her mouth and hummed delighted at the taste as she made her way down to the basement, she had a feeling that Malphas would like the nightlight while Aiko would devour the sweets.

Juliet Butler: Had a stint as a famous wrestler, put up with both artemis' and the twins' (miles and Beckett) criminal and fairy shenanigans, could kill you with her pinky

Goro Takemura:

It's literally his job. He's the personal bodyguard of the Emperor of Japan... You don't get that kind of position by being bad at what you do. Takemura is the best of the best, extremely competent and a powerful fighter. He's also EXTREMELY loyal, to the point it might be called unhealthy. His job is his purpose in life and he would do anything to do it well.

It's kinda fucked up because Saburo Arasaka is vaguely evil? But you'll never convince Takemura of that. No matter what happens in the game, Takemura stays loyal to Arasaka.

You could argue that techically Saburo does get murdered at the start of the game. To that I say, NAY! THAT'S NOT TAKEMURA'S FAULT. If you order your bodyguard to leave the room even after he protests, in order to have a private conversation with your son, you cannot then blame aforementioned bodyguard when your son murders you. That's on you, buddy.

Anyway, Takemura spends the rest of the game seeking revenge for this, being loyal even after Saburo's death.

The average man after encountering a woman like Goromi would have immediately stood and asked for a refund! To add insult to injury, Goromi herself was particularly peculiar, with a dominant and brash personality. Any man who decides to stay for a chat with such a woman would ask for a refund even if they had even a bit of interest. Despite this, Kazuma Kiryu seems to frequent this location.

He’s a man that doesn’t seem like he would go into these cabaret clubs in the first place. He had looks that could kill, and not in a good way. If not for being paid many of the girls wouldn’t even dare to be paired up with him simply based on his angry demeanor and his shy, dull personality. However, he walked in for the 2nd time this week and opened his wallet.

“Good evening, Kiryu-san” a young man bowed and stood up straight after Kiryu addressed him “Our nightly fee is 3,300 yen. Additional costs will be added” Kiryu nodded and handed over the initial 3,300. The man took it and placed it in the cash register.

“If I may, will you be seeing Goromi tonight?” The man asked. Kiryu nodded defeatedly. Kiryu had an apparent dislike for said butler, Kiryu was sure the man was required to ask who a regular would be seeing, but he could help but feel as though his privacy was being invaded. However he didn’t even have to say anything, that must’ve been the only good thing about such an exchange. He didn’t have to open his mouth and shyly request for Goromi. Sooner rather than later, He was escorted to the back of a comfortable secluded part of the club.

“She will be here shortly” the butler bowed and stepped away. Kiryu exhaled a “thanks” and raised his hand politely to send him off. Once alone he spread his legs and leaned back against the chair comfortably. He crossed his arms and waited, he felt like he had been waiting quite a while at this point, so he opened his eyes and saw none other than Goromi.

“Kiryu-Chan~! Were you sleeping? Why don’t you rest your head?” She pouted and sat down and patted her thigh. Kiryu made a ‘tch’ sound (scoffed) and leaned forward on his knees “Really?”

After she had finished shopping and had bought herself a beautiful dress, she was driven to her final destination: the Chōten mansion, where the man himself, Tomi Chōten, waited. Wearing an attractive emerald-colored tuxedo, he bowed graciously to the lady waiting.

"A pleasure as always, Lady Kobayashi," Tomi stated, as he gently kiss her outward hand. "I hope this day was filled with bliss for you."

He gently took her hand as he led her to his Rolls Royce, which was waiting for the two of them.

"And it is not over yet, milady."

From then on, Tomi took the CEO to a variety of places: a theater show, a casino, and finally a rooftop restaurant. Miho was not surprised in the least to say that the restaurant was empty, save for them and a couple of chefs and some musicians who were playing classical music.

As the two finished eating, Tomi called for two glasses of wine, both already filled. Clinking their glasses together, the two downed their drinks, but Miho stopped as felt something in her glass. Looking at it, her eyes couldn't believe that it was a ring. Looking up at Tomi, she noticed he wasn't there, but was now beneath her on one knee...

Now...

"Miho Kobayashi, you are truly a woman that I would love to spend this life and the next with. I am truly fortunate to know you. And it is for that reason I have to ask you this..."

Reaching into his coat pocket, Tomi pulled out a jewel box and opened it, which contained perhaps the largest and most expensive diamond ring in the world.

"...Miho Kobayashi, would you please do me the honor of being my lawfully-wedded wife?"
