Face to a Name
Tumblr media
It was a calm and sunny day, despite the chill in the air nipping at her cheeks, it was pleasant to feel the sun on her skin. Standing in the Jeweled Crozier, Valeria paused and rose her chin, bicolored eyes closing as she took in the crisp air and the mild warmth to her flesh. Not far off she could smell the freshly baked bread and aroma of the coffee nearby – little bakeries had always been her favorite but today was not the day to doddle. Self-indulgence would have to wait, she had a purpose for being in the market today.
In a swath of heavy silks and a furlined cloak, Valeria made her way down the cobbled street again with Bruce not too far off from her side. He maintained just enough respectable distance to give Valeria her privacy but also being a few strides from being at her side had she required it.
Jewelry?
Too personal, she didn’t want to scare him off with too much of a lavish and expensive gift.
She didn’t know the first thing about buying for a man outside of liquor and cigars. Well, at least that is what her father seemed to enjoy. The very thought of Adrian Cress had Valeria pinching her cloak under her chin and her nose wrinkled slightly.
No, any old gift wouldn’t do. It had to be something meaningful and practical.
A light twitch came to her unpainted lips and she stepped into one of the stalls looking over several books they had available ranging from poetry, children’s stories, short stories, and even historical tomes though it hadn’t been any titles Valeria herself wasn’t familiar with. Her mind then drifted and in silence she looked over her shoulder while lost in thought. A vein of an idea dropped into her head and she looked to the shop keep, “A large tome. A blank on if you have it please?”
He had brought up a box where several large tomes were settled inside, each handcrafted with quality leather and silver bindings, ornate designs on the front and in a variety of different colors. It was the dark purple and ebony-washed leathered book that caught Valeria’s attention and she slowly pulled it free, “This one.” she spoke, knowing that the pull to this one specifically had to mean it was a good choice….or….so she was hoping.
The pair exchanged item and gil and pleased with her purchase, Valeria turned from the stall, fingers idly looking through the bare, tawny pages. It was a beautiful tome, the quality seemed sturdy enough.
There were reasons why most individuals visited the Jeweled Cozier and then there were reasons why Ricard often found himself wandering the stalls of the Jeweled Cozier - none of which applied on this particular afternoon. There was no informant to meet, no target to watch, no information to be gathered. If anything, most of the information that had crossed his desk over the last several months had been…positively tame.
No, he was wandering the stalls at his father’s behest, because he’d been given the option - deal with his mother’s fiery temper once again, or allow his father to hold her off while he did the leg work of finding an appropriate anniversary gift. He’d chosen the leg work.
After all - one could only be lectured about how he’d failed to save his betrothal so many times before he said something that got him into trouble…again.
Ricard turned his lighter between his fingers as he pursued the stalls, tucking the item into his jacket as he spotted a familiar Roegadyn figure.
Bruce. Where Bruce was, there was a Cress nearby. The question was simply…which one.
It took him a moment to spot her, and another to make his way through the small crowd towards her. He was careful to clear his throat as he approached - not wanting to startle her, if he could help it. “It’s good to see you awake, Lady Cress.”
With full-blown eyes, Valeria looked up from the large book in hand. Not quite startled but a little surprised, “Oh! – I, oh yes. I…” she paused, “ – I suppose the whole city knew of that huh?” she had nearly forgotten how much a city like Ishgard loved to gossip.
“Apologies, you must know my sister then.”
He blinked slowly, the implication taking a moment to register. “I do know your sister…but I don’t believe the whole of the city knew of what occurred. Your sister has always been quite fond of playing her cards quite close to the vest.”
There was a pause as he adjusted the sleeves of his coat - a habit, perhaps, something to keep his hands busy as he’d tucked away his lighter moments before. He looked up with an easy, charming smile, hands clasped behind his back, “...perhaps an introduction would be appropriate here. I’m Ricard Blythe - as I said…it’s lovely to see you up and awake, my lady.”
The woman before him looked a little stunned, the expression she wore was one of mild confusion but she was lively and animated plenty, "Ricard?" She asked, musing on the name until it hit her.
"Oh!" She bowed her head briefly, "Apologies. I know of you, yes. I haven't put the name to a face yet but I suppose today is a good a day as any." Gazing down to the tome in hand, Valeria hugged it closer to her person, embarrassment hitting her as she tucked some hair behind her ear. She hadn't quite expected her once betrothed to be so young, closer to her own age, kind, polite and…handsome.
“No need for apologies.” He watched her actions, his eyes bright - curious…inquisitive. The charming grin shifted to an easy smile. “I don’t suppose there would have been much of an opportunity to put a face to the name - well, prior to now. But you said you knew of me…I admit, I’m generally insatiably curious, but I do find myself being especially so now…”
He tilted his head to the side, noting the tome for a moment, “How have you been…since waking up?”
A twitch formed on her lips and they pinched towards her cheek anxiously, “I’ve been well. Seeing my physicians regularly now.” for a moment she looked up, spotting Bruce not too far off but he didn’t seem too concerned with who Valeria had been talking to. His demeanor was enough to feel her shoulders relax slightly.
“That is good to hear.”
“I must confess, Mr. Blythe, I do not remember you in the slightest. What I know of you is what my sister has revealed to me. I certainly hope you are not disappointed with how things have played out. I am genuinely sorry for the time you might have felt you wasted. All that expended energy you might not get back. You seem like a very kind gentleman.”
Ricard hummed thoughtfully, releasing his hands from behind his back and slipping them into his pockets. He’d assumed, based on her initial response, that she may not remember him…but confirmation was a totally different thing. If he caught the shift in her gaze, he didn’t seem bothered by it. “Ricard…you may call me Ricard.”
He exhaled slowly through his nose, glancing back at the stall for a moment. “Once again, there’s no need to apologize. The time wasn’t wasted - even if I’m the only one who can recall what time was spent together.” He looked back to her, the smile reassuring, “What occurred was the fault of only the attacker, and they alone bear the blame.”
His throat was cleared gently, “As I said, I’m a curious man, and I suppose there will always be a part that wonders what might have been had things played out differently - but they did not, and we all must play the cards we’re dealt.” One shoulder shrugged easily. “So here we are…but if you’ve any questions…about before, I could answer them, if you like.”
Her mouth opened and the woman looked caught with her words, wondrous bi-colored eyes blinking as if someone had just stilled her tongue. Guilt sat heavily in her ribcage as she watched Ricard before her, “I’m sorry.” that was all she could offer and still – for the stranger – she didn’t feel like it gave or offered enough, “I…well, I would like to know you. You seem like a gentle soul and kind, we must have been on good terms with one another?” she asked curiously.
Ricard paused for a moment. Kind and gentle were not typically words associated with him, but knowing what he did of Valeria - even if he hadn’t been informed of what she’d been going through the last several months, the last thing he wanted to do was to add to the woman’s stress. No reason to mislead her.
“I like to think we were, given the circumstances we were in, the demands that were placed on us. Six months to get to know one another is not a tremendous amount of time and I think we were making the best of what we were given.”
“I see. You’re right, six months isn’t a lot of time but that is quite normal for families like ours, no?” she looked down to the snow between them briefly and then back up. Adjusting the book in her arms, she lifted one hand out towards Ricard, “Well, I suppose now is a good time as any to reintroduce myself. I’m Valeria, you already know my sister. It’s a pleasure to meet you Ser Blythe.”
There was a low chuckle as he reached out and took the offered hand, giving it a firm (but not too firm - he didn’t want to hurt her) shake. “It’s lovely to meet you as well…You really can call me Ricard. Ser Blythe sounds like one is talking to my father.” He released her hand slowly. “My parents were very fond of you - my mother in particular was very upset when things were called off.”
“You should give her my apologies and well wishes next you see her. I do apologize profusely for that never came to light and what is more, wasting the time of others.” Valeria gave a small smile and her bi-colored eyes took a gaze around the market, “Are you here for anything special today?”
“You don’t have anything to apologize for.  You didn’t waste anyone’s time, and you certainly aren’t responsible for the way things played out. It was out of your hands just as much as it was out of mine.” He reached up and ran a hand through his hair as he glanced back at the stalls with a huff. “I am in fact, here for a particular reason…and that’s to search for a gift for my mother, on behalf of my father.”
Ricard waved a hand vaguely in the direction of the stalls. “It’s their anniversary, or close to it, and my father is terrible at choosing gifts. I tend to be a bit more…observant so he said he’d run interference with my mother for me if I’d come choose a gift for him. It seemed a fair trade. And so here I am, trying to determine what might make for an appropriate gift for a pair of individuals who have been together for thirty years. And you? What brought you out to the Cozier?”
“Thirty years is a long time.” Valeria smiled and briefly her attention shifted down the collective stalls, “I too was here for a gift. Ah, a tome actually for a friend. I’m not quite sure if it’s an interest your mother might have but the leathered tomes just down the way are exceptionally well made.”
“It is…They do know each other quite well at this point.” He slipped his hands back into his pockets for a moment. “I’ll have to keep that in mind - though there’s an artist just down the way. I was thinking of stopping by his stall to see what he had available today, there might be something there that’d be of interest to her….”
She stepped to the side and also gave Bruce a small glance in which he seemed to lift a hand, beckoning her in silence. They had already spent enough time from the estate and the evening hours were upon them, the sun already beginning to skirt the sky to eventual slumber, “I hope to run into you again soon, Ricard. For all else, I could use a friendly face in the city. I haven’t much of those these days – friends that is.”
“Well, should you wish to speak again…I do believe Bruce,” he waved over his shoulder at the man with a cheeky grin, “-knows where my estate is…not my parents, mine - the Milner estate…you’re welcome to come by at any time.” He bowed, giving a quick wink as he straightened up. “But I won’t keep you from the rest of your afternoon…take care, Valeria…and it is good to see you awake again.”
Ricard was met with a firm nod but one filled with some measure of hope and acceptance, “I’ll be sure to do just that, my Lord. Perhaps I’ll bring something for you to bring to your mother. A peace offering in a sense.” once more her smile turned awkward and she stepped off towards Bruce. The two parted and she left Ricard to his devices of having to find his mother a gift and she had plenty to work off of with a gift of her own that she had come seeking.
With Bruce beside her, the Cress sister walked abc to the Cress estate with the large tome hugged into her person. She couldn’t wait to see the expression on Damien’s face.

In the Shadows of the Spotlights – Kuromyu 2015
First of all, thank you, @rmglawliet for your interest and prompt for analyses. Thank you @lambsthroat, @inarislair and @downthebitterrabbithole for your interest and compliments. As my blog is dedicated to only Furukawa-era Kuromyus, I shall start with the first Yunbastian musical: The Lycoris that Blazes the Earth 2015
Tumblr media
Details in the Shadows of the Spotlights
The main differences between the manga and the musical are brought by the result of different possibilities that come with different media type.
Unlike in manga, stage portrayals allow for what can be called a simultaneous panelling. With manga, as pages and panels are limited in both size and number, a mangaka must often choose to sacrifice certain things for the sake of aesthetics. Just imagine every single panel to be drawn in panorama featuring every single character’s reaction just because the mangaka is indecisive. Nope, not pretty. On stage however, the opposite is true; even if the centre of attention might only be on one character, whoever is present also on stage –however far in the background – cannot be ‘out of view’. This is where skilled performers and concrete character interpretation become essential to a good production. The most memorable examples in my opinion are brought by Sebastian and Madam Red.
1. Hints in the Background
The first scene for analysis is when Ciel first meets up with Madam and Lau in the London town house. When we meet Lau, he behaves like nothing but an utter and complete airhead. He gives nobody reason to suspect he is not the ‘dumb foreigner’ as dictated by Chinese stereotype. In this rendition, ‘nobody’ seemed to include Madam Red and Grell as well. Though I personally think Araki laid emphasis on the clown aspect of Lau a bit too thick, he does fit in with the goofy half of the Lycoris musical. While I would have loved to see how Lau would function as a more subtle bridge between the musical’s starkly contrasted serious-vs-goofy tone, he is what he is. The only problem is that I personally find it hard to believe how this Lau could have survived this well in 19th century supremacist England as a foreigner, let alone made his way through the ranks to becoming branch leader of a crime syndicate… but that’s just me perhaps.
♪The air is filled with darkness and a beast-like stench, unlike anything you have ever seen. You could hold your breath and desperately try to keep your calm. But once you set foot in there, all that is left is being consumed by madness ♪
Lau joins a comic song where he enjoys gossiping and taunting Grell together with Madam, and Madam seems to enjoy his company, until Lau suddenly displays a sudden hint of intellect and wit previously invisible in him. At this, Madam who was originally sitting to the side of the table springs up in seeming paranoia.
She appears to try to assess Lau from closer up and subtly shifts towards the man. The second Madam gets up, Sebas already takes notice and makes to collect the empty cups. Sebas’ action here gives us a hint that he has been paying a very close eye to the duo and is constantly on alert. This is perhaps the first indication that Sebas already knows something is wrong with Madam and her butler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grell meanwhile, notices the increasing distress in her mistress and approaches her, convincing her to remain calm and sit down. A very small but telling detail is when Madam is about to sit down again, she waves a gesturing hand to assure Grell that everything will be alright. This small gesture is easily overlooked, and yet is a powerful detail in storytelling. To spectators who are already familiar with the story, it adds layer to the characters and is almost a spoiler to cracking the case. To unfamiliar spectators, it is subtle enough to not spoil the outcome, but does give them a glimpse of the deep bond in this master-servant relationship.
Tumblr media
2. Not ineffective, just nasty
The second scene that can serve as splendid example is Sebastian’s passive aggressive upside-down reading previously mentioned in this post. Here however, I shall go into more analytical detail.
Another hint we are given that Sebastian knows more than he lets on is the scene where Ciel and Madam play chess. Sebastian has been ordered to go through the list of suspects over and over again, because Ciel remained dissatisfied about his report that “other than the Viscount of Druitt, none of the humans present at the party could have committed the crimes.”
「ドルイット子爵以外の人間には不可能です」 “Druitt shishaku igai no ningen ni wa fukanou desu”
Although translated to English, ‘none of the humans’ sounds like such a blatant give-away that people might even doubt Ciel’s intelligence, in Japanese this phrase is art itself. ‘Ningen’ means ‘human kind’ as well as ‘people’. In Japanese however, though the word explicitly stresses the type of species, to average listeners, nothing about the phrase would sound out of the way. (If there’s something similar in a language that you know, please share! I’d love to know how this ‘hint’ would best be translated in other languages.) Sebas could have opted for equally natural alternatives such as 人 hito, meaning simply ‘persons’, or 容疑者, yougisha, meaning ‘suspects’, of course. But why would he? This specific wording is a very subtle way of Sebastian to hint at his master that he is headed in an altogether wrong direction, without giving the boy the satisfaction of getting the answer presented to him on a silver platter. Sebastian cares little that his sense of humour would come at the expense of more human lives. What the demon does mind is that his master would make him put up with more of the boring paperwork, again.
This annoyance was not explicit because no lines were given to Sebas in either manga or musical script. Though Sebastian remained graceful, his true sentiments probably boiled down to a simple ‘bitch, please’. In the shadows, Yunbastian would display his irritation with the attitude of a five year old in the most elegant fashion ever to be seen in theatre.
In an interview, Furukawa shared with us that his Sebas would obey his master’s instructions, so reading is what he would do. But he would not hesitate to let his master know just how foolish these instructions were. Passive-aggressive loud turnings of the pages and upside-down reading are what were due. Sadly the loud turning of the pages is inaudible in a grand theatre, but the upside-down reading can be witnessed in its full glory. No, it was not a coincidence, and I can assure you. Even if it was just so that the stack of paper was wrongly sorted, nobody besides Furukawa could have seen that the words were upside down. So why would Yunbastian bother? Turning paper with gloved hands is tricky! (Seriously, you try it yourself).
Tumblr media
This seemingly small gesture is more important to the entire flow of the story and the characterisation of Sebas’ character than one may suspect at first. Sebastian is designed as a demon butler to whom the even most herculean of tasks seem like a doddle. The way that it has been revealed in the manga that Sebas had always known whose tail his master should have been after seemed a bit of out of the blue. In the musical version however, thanks to this ‘simultaneous panelling’ I mentioned before, the revelation was turned into an inevitable result of a gradual development in time. The manga left me personally wondering why Sebas didn’t help Ciel solve the Ripper case sooner. The obvious reasoning is that he simply couldn’t, be it because of order restraints or even personal incompetence. As it turns out in the musical however, Sebas was not ineffective, he’s just nasty.
The small hints in the backgrounds did not only show us how savvy Sebas had been, but also function as a warning that behind the elegant façade, a nasty jester hides. This is perhaps the first example we get of Yana-sensei’s claim that ‘she was beaten to the punch by Yunbastian.’ Glimpses have been shown, but we did not get any explicit confirmation that Sebastian is a nasty demon with an even nastier sense of humour until 2018 in chapter 138. During the run of Lycoris back in 2015, we already see that Furukawa foresaw how petty and tempestuous Sebas truly is behind his concocted beauty.
3. That Demon, Still Butler
The third and final scene I selected for analysis is the one with Undertaker after Madam’s funeral.
After the funeral, Undertaker brutally taunts the boy about the loss of his aunt, but Ciel buffs up and lies: “I prioritised catching Jack the Ripper over saving her life. I left her to her fate… with knowledge. Even my own blood relative.”
Tumblr media
In the manga, Sebastian’s reaction ⇈ to Ciel during and after the funeral had mostly been a stoic and disapproving one. This is to be expected, as without Sebastian, Ciel would simply have been useless at his own job in this case. It had been Sebas who had given all the puzzle pieces to his master, and it was also he who had to lay all the pieces into its frame. Ciel was only there to see that the job be done the way he wanted it to be done, but otherwise only served to slow the case down. Sebastian’s attitude? If you see fit to waste my time I would happily waste yours too, my Lord.
Tumblr media
Yunbastian too has grown rather spiteful by the end of this arc, but he is sassier than Sebas in the manga. While Sebastian in the manga seems to merely disapprove, Yunbastian raises a very judgemental eyebrow. He said nothing, but the eyebrow may as well have been knitted into a frown spelling ‘oh-really-now?’
Tumblr media
Then, although Undertaker was hardly a threat at that point of the manga, when he grabbed the boy by his collar in a somewhat aggressive manner, Yunbastian turned immediately and stays on alert from that point on. However subtle this gesture, we are once again reminded of the sole reason Sebastian is on Earth. He is still bound by the terms of his contract, and is therefore first and foremost Ciel’s mother butler.
Tumblr media
All in all, I think that both Akane Live and Furukawa Yuuta made very significant contributions to their characters that Yana herself admitted to have failed to portray in the manga (I shall add the source when I find it again). Although the Jack the Ripper arc is very interesting and beautiful, I do wish the manga could have been fleshed out a bit more. I personally found the solemn-vs-goofy balance a bit askew in the Lycoris musical, but the actors really did give the characters so much more depth and layers.
Thank you all for your interest and compliments, and also for reading this long fan-ramble disguised as an in-depth analysis!

The Assignment - {8}
{7} | Master List
Tumblr media
By the time Alex made it out to her designated car, she was more than ready to just go back to sleep.  She was excited for the job, but with everything else happening, she just wanted to be alone. More than that, she wanted the whole threat against her life thing to be over. It had only been a few days, but she was more than over it.
“Ah, I see you've made it with two minutes to spare. Luckily Changkyun came early! We can head out now.” Minhyuk said, ever present smile still there.
“You got a gun?” Alex asked the man she assumed to be Changkyun.
“Uh...yes ma'am” he agreed hesitantly.
“Good to know.” Alex said.
“I'd keep it under watch.” Alex heard Wonho say. “She's a shifty one.”
“Am not. It was just a question.” Alex defended.
“Uh huh. It's only 8am. It's too early for threats and gun slinging don't you think Miss Alex?” Wonho asked.
“I didn't realize there was an inappropriate time for either. You part of the detail going with me today?”
“Yes ma'am. We've got a busy schedule so we should go.”
Changkyun got into the driver's seat of the SUV, while Wonho sat next to him in the passenger seat.  That left Alex in the back with minhyuk.
“Yeah...nope. Can't do it. Wonho, switch seats with Minhyuk.” Alex said.
“Don't be a grumpy gills. It'll be great!” Minhyuk said as he climbed into the backseat.
Alex shot a pleading look towards Wonho who only laughed and closed his door.
“I have a question.” Alex asked as she got situated in the backseat.
“What's that?” Minhyuk asked.
“Not for you.”
“Wonho, if I have such a busy schedule...and an assistant...why didn't Shownu tell me about it last night when he was rambling about all that other shit?” Alex asked.
“From what I understand, you zoned out about eight seconds into his information dump. I'd assume he'd have told you more had you actually been engaged in the conversation.”
“Hey! I lasted at least fifteen seconds. But his voice is so monotone and I just...wanted him to shut up"
“Wow. Your honesty never ceases to amaze me. How about from now on instead of coming to you rambling, I'll text you information you need.” Wonho said.
“Yeah that'll work. The less I actually have to see of you all the better.” Alex had meant it as a joke, but her tone gave way to how bitter she still was.
Wonho gave a forced laugh and prompted Minhyuk to start explaining her schedule.
“Right! So we'll meet with Hyungwon at 9 when we get to the Embassy. At 10:30 you'll have a video chat with Kihyun. He's essentially your counterpart at the Korean Embassy in D.C. You'll be communicating with him on a daily basis so introductions will happen today. After that you'll have lunch and then at 2 you’re set to meet with a stylist. If you're done there before 5 you'll return to your office until 6. If you're not done by then you're free to go home after and come back to the Embassy in the morning at 9.”
“Jesus. Did you breathe at all through that monologue?” Alex asked Minhyuk.
“Alex. Please tell me you heard what he said?” Wonho asked.
“Course I did. Hyungwon, Kihyun, lunch, stylist, home.” You reiterated.
“Simplified version, but essentially yes.”
“And where do you fit into this whole scenario?” Alex asked Minhyuk.
“Oh, I'll be by your side the whole time.”
It took everything in Alex's power not to verbalize her dislike for that comment. It wasn't any easier when she heard Wonho laugh from the front seat.
Alex walked into the Embassy letting the feeling of familiarity wash over her.  It had been a few years since she stepped foot into the place, but it was as warm and inviting as she remembered it to be. Usually those two things weren't synonymous with an Embassy, but some of Alex's most fond childhood memories were here.
“Ah Miss Kensington! Good morning.” Alex looked over to see Mable sitting dutifully at her desk just inside the entrance.
“Mable!” Alex said as she all but ran to the middle aged woman, throwing her arms around her.
“I'm sorry. This is so unprofessional but I missed you.” Alex said.
“It's okay sweetie. They'll just have to let it slide this once.” Mable laughed as she hugged Alex tightly.
“Sorry Alex but we have to get to a meeting. Mustn't doddle.” Minhyuk said.
“I'm not doddling.” Alex groaned.
“On the plus side, I'll get to see you a lot now Mable. Let's have lunch together soon.”
Alex let Minhyuk drag her away, though she loathed it immensely.
“Good morning Miss Kensington. Let's get right to business shall we?” The man Alex assumed to be Hyungwon said.
“I'm Chae Hyungwon, the director of Foreign Correspondence. You came very highly recommended from both your teachers and current Embassy staff.”
“That's good to know. I'm happy to be here.”
“Good to hear. You’ll start off just translating incoming information from Kihyun if necessary, or outgoing information. The two of you can work that out. You'll be the translator on hand for meetings also until you get accustomed to the job and while you're learning your other duties.”
“That's reasonable.” Alex said.
“There will be paperwork such as NDA’s and such you'll have to sign. Since your father was the previous Ambassador, I assume you know that these things are confidential?”
“Yes sir. It won't be a problem at all.”
“There is one other thing.” Hyungwon said seriously.
“While myself and the Ambassador know of your current situation, no one else is to be let in on that information.”
“That won't be a problem at all. I'd like it if there were no situation at all, but I can guarantee my silence in the matter.” Alex assured him.
“That means with Kihyun as well.”
“Kihyun? What does he have to do with this sir?” Alex asked.
“Kihyun sends pertinent information here to the Embassy before going to other government officials, as will you to him. Now since the man you know as Ramsey is an American living here illegally, he's on both our radar and theirs. There may be information coming through to you about him and you need to stay professional and detached the best you can. I know it's not ideal, but it's what needs to be done.  In staying completely transparent with you, we contemplated rescinding the job offer.”
“Can I ask why?”
“There was no threat against you when you were offered the job. We thought it may hinder your performance. But we also didn't feel right taking it away because of a situation you have no control over. But just know, if they do become too much and it interferes with your job, you will be asked to resign.” Hyungwon said.
“I appreciate the honesty and understand completely. Thank you.”
“Now. Minhyuk will show you to your office. You have about an hour to get familiar with your schedule and review some files to make sure translations are accurate. Your video chat with Kihyun will begin at 10:30. If there's anything you need my office is at the end of the hall from yours. Have a good day.”
And with that Hyungwon was gone.
Alex had been taken aback by his abrasive way of speaking, but appreciated his full disclosure and honesty. She could definitely get used to him.
“Alright! Let's show you to your office now!” Alex heard from the doorway.
“You.” She said pointing to Minhyuk.
“You’re going to be harder to get used to. Much harder.”

— ✗ THE SAME. — ✗ Time Period: Late June, 2011. — ✗ TW: Mentions of severe illness, depression, cancer. Things weren’t the same. People keep telling her they were. They told her that her room was the same – her home was exactly like it’d been when she left it aside from a few changes. She was told that her life could go on as normal. She would take extra studies with her tutors to catch up on what she had missed and she would be Queen. That was the plan they told her. They told her she was the same girl she’d been. They told her that her life wouldn’t be changed by what she’d gone through. But it wasn’t true. Her life wasn’t the same. It would never be the same. She couldn’t forget what she’d spent the last seven years fighting. She couldn’t forget the months at a time in the hospital, couldn’t forget the fact that she’d gone so long without sleeping in her own bed. Hospitals had been her home, not this empty place that had once been meant for a nine year old with hopes, dreams and stars in her eyes. Her mind couldn’t erase the painful treatments. She wouldn’t forget getting the biopsies, or the x-rays or the scans done. She wouldn’t forget the bone marrow tests, the pain and bruises that still affected her hips. The memories of looking down at her thin and fragile body and seeing the bruises, scars and affected areas from the tests they’d done, or the procedures they’d had to perform. The look of her freshly healing scar up on her upper chest from where they’d removed her port. So much time had been lost. She had been wasting away in a hospital for years. Every day, every week, every month and every year. She had watched friends leave or die, had watched the sadness on her family’s face when they’d heard bad news, even the hint of relief because they didn’t have to keep going through it anymore. Sometimes, when she’d been lying in her bed in the hospital and one of those doctors said that things weren’t looking good, she almost wished that it would all be over. She craved the end of the pain and the tests and the treatments. She didn’t want to be sick anymore. She didn’t want to hurt and look at her broken body. She didn’t want to be the cancer girl, she just wanted it over. She’d never told anyone that part. Ana knew full well that hearing such a thing would break her family’s hearts. Even now, sometimes, sitting in her room at home that had been made and designed for a nine year old, she thought about it. She wondered if it would have been easier if she’d just succumbed to her illness, if she had just left the world in peace one night. She pondered if it would be better than staring at the pink walls. If it would be preferable to having everyone watch her like she might drop, like she’d waste away. If she didn’t have to wait to sleep every night until they were done their regular three checks to make sure her illness hadn’t randomly occurred in the matter of hours and taken her away in her sleep. If it would be preferable to catching the sight of herself in the mirror – her red hair growing in rough patches atop her most bald head, her thin looking body covered in scars, her face sunken, her green eyes lifeless and dark circles under her eyes – and wondering if she’d ever be beautiful again. She went to her classes to appease her parents, met with the private tutors that taught her things about royalty that she should have been learning seven years ago. The only thing she was grateful for was that she’d been still been taking classes in the hospital for her regular programmed courses up until she’d been fourteen. It’d only put her two years behind the others her ages. Her parents told her she’d catch up, that they’d do a fast track program so she could do her university schooling at the same time other people her age would. But it wasn’t enough. She knew even if they did that, that even if she managed to catch up, or have her body filled in and her hair grow back, she’d never be the girl they wanted her to be again. She’d never be able to wear the crown and not think about whoever had donated the bone marrow that had saved her life when she’d gotten her remission. She’d never be able to rule over a Kingdom without thinking about where she would be if she hadn’t had the resources she did. Things were not the same. As usual, Ana was sitting in her room, on her bed. Her classes with her tutor had ended for the day, finishing about an hour after supper hour, and she’d be left to her own devices for a while before her parents came and plagued her about needing to eat more. Or tried to get her down to the seamstress to get her fitted for more gowns. None of the ones in her closet fit her anymore. Not only were they for a nine year old, but they carried the aura much different than the one she held. Most of them wouldn’t cover the scar on her chest from where her port had been either. She knew her parents wouldn’t admit it but she was certain that the seamstress would have had special orders to make sure that all scars were tastefully hidden by material. She figured she’d try to take her time alone to read. It was a habit she’d developed in the hospital. Before, she’d spent most of her time scouring history books, learning about the best rulers of their nation and the worse to decide who she wanted to be. She studied the laws to decide what she could improve, learn about the troubles of her people. It was all part of being the future Queen she had wanted to be. She had lost the taste for it rather quickly though. Now it was fiction she preferred. It was an escape, even if it was temporary. It gave her something to mull over, a topic that wouldn’t lead to the ultimate questioning of where her future would go, who she could be now that who she’d been destined to be wasn’t likely. For a while, it was like she was in another world, where people came back from awful things in the same shape they’d entered them in. She thought about it sometimes, if she could just be exactly who she was, forgetting about the years before. But, she knew she couldn’t. She wasn’t a powerful book heroine, she was just Ana. Flipping through her book, she scanned the words carefully, taking them in and letting them paint the pictures in her mind. She thought about the world, how it looked through the character’s eyes. It was like she could be there. Could sink into those pages and never return to who she’d been before. It was better than the alternative – returning to a cold and empty life that didn’t call to her anymore. She didn’t get to immerse her in the world for long. Soon, a knock on the door disturbed her and she looked up from the pages rather quickly. “Come on in,” she said quickly, knowing if she didn’t speak up immediately her parents would likely be paged and a field of doctors would be raining down on her before she even had the chance to say she was fine she just hadn’t felt like company. The doorknob twisted from her side and she watched as one of her guards stepped in. He was the only one who’d been around since she was a kid. To her and Ashton he was more like an older brother than anything. “Princess Anastasia, I’m here to escort your parent’s parlor,” he told her. Though he was all professional, she could see the hint of the smile on his face. It wasn’t the same as it’d been when she was a child though. This one was sad almost. She tried to smile a little, but she knew what he meant. He meant he was escorting her to go sit with her parent’s while they sat through a second supper and barely ate a bite as an excuse to get her to try and eat more. “Right on time,” she said, though her voice was monotone, she knew he could sense her reluctance. Anyone who was around her knew that she hated her parent’s attempts to reshape her into who she had used to be, that she hated their hovering. She got off the bed, using her hands to push off the bed and stand up. She ignored the way her head spun and walked quickly enough so her guard wouldn’t be able to tell but she wouldn’t be making it worse. God forbid she tipped or even succumbed to the dizziness she felt. She knew any sign of weakness would have her mother submitting to her another hundred tests to make sure the cancer wasn’t coming back. “Thank you Princess,” her guard nodded and turned. He knew better than to try and help her. As grateful as she was for the help, and the kindness. It felt more like pity, like she was being treated like a porcelain doll. When her head stopped spinning, she headed off after him at an even pace. She knew the way, but things had changed. Where her brother could be summoned and go to the place where he wanted, she was always escorted. Just another overprotective measure. As much as she hated to admit it, in some ways it might have been helpful. Seven years was a long time to be barely home. Her parents had wanted her kept at the hospital, even when she had been feeling better. The doctor’s telling them that with her immune system weak and to be careful was enough for them to keep her in at all times. When she wasn’t at the hospital, she’d been in some sort of rehabilitation place. During the duration of her illness, she hadn’t spent much time there. But afterwards, when she’d achieved remission, her mother had sent her there for a few months to make sure she was really okay before being sent home. They told her it was because they wanted her to build her strength, but she knew they were just waiting for the cancer to come back like it had any other time it looked like things were getting better. As much as she’d craved being home, she’d forgotten things she had used to know. She’d forgotten what her room looked like, how the intricate hallways interconnected. The only thing she was grateful for when it came to the hovering was that she didn’t have to spend hours wandering to try and get where she wanted to go. Whoever was escorting her always led the way. Soon, she was there. It was unsurprising. Her escorts were never ones to doddle. Even if there were a hundred ways to get somewhere, they took the quickest. It was the way her parents wanted it. Less chance of tiring her out. Even if she’d been working for a while at rebuilding her strength when she was being rehabilitated. Arriving, she saw the doors were closed and knew it likely meant her parents were still in a meeting. They usually left the doors open, and she could always smell the elaborately planned dinners that were laid out inside the room. She was certain it was meant to convince her to go on in. But most times it didn’t. It only reminded her of every morning on the rounds of chemotherapy that had her vomiting up her breakfast. “Shall I wait with you?” Her guard asked her. She wasn’t surprised. By the way her parents stressed it, she didn’t doubt he probably thought that left to her own devices for a moment she’d pass out or something worse. “No, that’s alright Johnathan, you’re dismissed,” she said softly, trying to hide that little bit of irritation in her voice. It was so uncharacteristic for her. But even in the hospital she hadn’t dealt with this much hovering. Dealing with it here made it feel as if her head might explode. She could see the reluctance on her face but he thankfully turned around and left. When he was down the hallway, she turned to face the door and went to open it. She had hoped it would please her parents, if she showed interest in whatever meeting they were having. When she was younger they’d had her sit in on them. Maybe repeating such behaviors might convince them to drop some of their restrictions on her. If they thought she wanted to be part of the meetings again and was taking interest in royal life, maybe they’d let her do more things. As soon as the door opened, she could hear the voices of those inside. They had her stopping dead in her tracks. The meeting wasn’t about politics. Not about laws or the finances or any approvals. This meeting wasn’t between some diplomat or representative of her family and her parents. It was her parents and her tutor. And they were talking about her. She stopped pushing the door before it was even more than a crack open and quickly froze in spot, trying to be as quiet as possible. Whatever was going on, she wanted to hear it. Especially if it was about her. “Your majesties, with all due respect,” her tutor trailed off, as if considering if she should say it or not. “Your daughter is very depressed.” “That’s ridiculous, she’s a walking miracle, and she knows how lucky she is. We see how happy she is to be home,” her father’s accented words dismissed any idea that she might not be happy. She could already hear the anger in his tone, the strain that carried in his voice when he was trying to hold back strong emotions. “I don’t think she is. She comes to class, she goes through the motions. She’s like a robot. I’ve never seen her smile once. I’ve never seen her try to do anything besides sit in her room and read. She’s a zombie, and I can see the lifelessness in her eyes every time she comes to the library,” she could hear the soft tone, but could also sense the strain. Unsurprising considering that the tutor was likely facing a harsh wrap on the knuckles for speaking on such things. “That’s it. You’re fir-,” her father’s voice was booming, but he was cut off by her mother’s soft voice. “Are you sure about this? Maybe she’s just adjusting to being home. She’s confused, she just needs to get back to her life,” denial of course. But at least more rational than her father’s immediate attempt to fire the woman. “If I wasn’t I wouldn’t be putting my job on the line to tell you,” her tutor said. Ana held her breath, not sure how much she liked the conversation. Sure, her tutor was right in many ways. But her parents finding out? She wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Her father started talking. She heard her mother shushing him softly, the way she often had with Ana when she was a child and had scraped her knee. “What do you recommend then? What can we do to make her happy?” “Well, there’s something I had in mind,” the tutor trailed off, definitely unsure of what she was about to say, or perhaps unsure of who she was about to say it to. “Go on then,” her father’s voice was rough, still angry that he was being lectured on his child. “There’s a trip coming up. A couple of kids her age, royals, are going on a trip to China. It’s part of a program to help them connect with other countries and make potential alliances. I was thinking that perhaps Princess Ana might like it,” her voice was barely a mumble. She was definitely scared. Ana couldn’t be bother to notice it though. She was immediately somewhere else. Something filled her, excitement. She wanted to be somewhere else, anywhere else but here. Every moment she was there, every moment her mother wouldn’t let her leave the grounds, she found herself suffering more. Nothing was the same, and every day spent staring at the same walls and walking the same courtyards was only making that more apparent. The chance to go on a trip, especially somewhere she might not be hovered over. “Absolutely not,” it was both her parents in unison that time. Disagreeing on approach or not, they were set in this opinion. She could already tell. “Your majesties, you must consider what is best for your daughter. If she keeps living like this I fear -,” once again, she was cut off by her father and his voice was warning. A back and forth started. Between her parents and the tutor. She let it go on for five minutes, only because she was already thinking about the potential of such a trip. Gaining what was left of her courage and trying to put aside the attitude of bow her head and do exactly as they wanted, she pushed the door open and all but stumbled into the room. “Mom, dad,” she addressed them quickly. “Anastasia,” her mother said, though both of her parents seemed surprised to see her. They’d probably expected her to take longer. Her guards were supposed to take their sweet time bringing her anywhere. “Please,” she said, not bothering with anymore pleasantries, or any fake surprise or interest in eating the food they had been planning on giving her. “Please let me go,” she didn’t even bother making it seem any less like she was begging. She needed to go. “Anastasia, you’re not ready. You’re not strong enough,” her mother said, her voice soft. She gave her the same expression she’d given her since she was sick. The same one she got every time she was told she wasn’t going home, or couldn’t go out like she wanted. That pitiful, “I’m so sorry,” look. “I am though. I am strong enough. I want to go. I want to be with the other people my age. I feel well enough to go. Please,” she blurted it out, unable to eloquently and politely get the words out. All that mattered was she made them consider it. “I’ll take frequent breaks, the guards can escort me anywhere you want. Just let me go, please,” she let some more calculated words slip through, hoping it would tell them what they wanted to hear. “Please.” ~~ It was nothing less than a miracle that it was actually happening. It had taken a few weeks for her to convince her parents to actually let her go. She’d spent those few weeks doing everything to a perfection to make sure her parents though she was well enough to go. She convinced them that it was more about the politics and settling back into her position than about getting out of there for a little while. And finally, they’d given the approval – stipulations attached of course. She’d spent every day after waiting for them to find an excuse to cancel. Whether it was them waiting on the latest test results from her doctors, or them finding an activity the group was doing that’d be too dangerous for her to be doing. For a while they even tried to convince her they needed to go too. She’d worn them down and finally got them to stop fighting it though. Even as she drove to the airport, she had waited for them to tell the driver to turn around, that she needed to be home. When they’d arrived, and her bags were taken by one of the attendants, she waited for them to tell them to stop, that they’d changed their minds. And finally, when she was giving her goodbye hugs, she waited for this dream to be snatched away from her. But it wasn’t. Even in the air she half expected her parents to have the jet turned around. Yet, it wasn’t. And she’d gotten to China with the other group safely. Everything was different. Beautiful, but much different than what she was used to. She already had liked it from the moment she’d stepped off the plane. Even if the wig her parents had suggested she wear was uncomfortable, even if the guards followed her everywhere and she was supposed to stop and rest at least once an hour, even if she was forced to eat every little bite of her food that was given to her, even if there was a clear divide between her and the other royals, it was better than the same walls and halls and views at the Palace. It was day three into her trip, and the group was going to the markets on an excursion led by the royal family hosting them. She couldn’t have been more grateful to get to do such a thing. Better yet, her guards were being used back at China’s palace for some training session, and she had guards who didn’t necessarily know about her special needs. It was almost like before, at least in the way that she wasn’t worrying about having someone following her every footstep. She had been friendly to the other royals, but they saw her differently. Some looked at her with pity. Even with the clothes that covered her scars, the very convincing wig and the carefully applied makeup, she was still too thin, too pale. It was easy to tell they didn’t think much of her. Others looked at her with a predatory sorts. Probably thinking she might have been an easy target to try and get a foothold in Russia’s monarchy. There was only one or two who interacted like her like she was normal. Most time was spent with them. They were busy with a conversation they were holding with one of the street vendors though. Kind or not, they were still royals. And she knew from an early age they were all taught to size up the competition. Talking to the people of another country was a good way to do that. She didn’t want to interrupt, or play the usual royal games. There would be plenty of time to waste on that when she was home. This trip was about getting out. So she’d taken advantage of her lax guards and wandered deeper into the market. She looked about, taking in the different stands. There was food, clothes, embroidered cloth pieces like blankets, jewelry, there was even a few people selling things like pottery. It took her a while to get the courage to approach the stands at first. She was nervous about the people, if they would think the same things of her that other’s thought. But, eventually, she worked up the courage to go to the jewelry stand. She thought she could get something for her brother. Her parents wouldn’t care for it, but she thought a wrist band for her brother would be appreciated. He had been busy with other things and hadn’t gone on the trip. Waiting for the customer ahead of her to finish up, she carefully checked out the selection. When it was her turn, she walked up to the vendor. “Excuse me,” she said in Chinese. She’d learned the more basic phrases at a young age. She hadn’t gotten the chance to learn more in school, but she’d been working on it since she’d arrived. The vendor smiled at her attempt. “Wrist band,” the words were choppy, and by no means perfect, but she hoped she’d gotten the translation correct. Just in case she hadn’t, she wrapped her fingers around her wrist. The vendor nodded and lifted a tray from beneath the counter onto the ledge of the stand. She motioned to it and Ana tilted her head down to get a better look at the options. There was one with an interesting woven pattern that she liked. She picked it up. “This one, please,” a genuine smile played on her lips. “For you?” The vendor, a woman replied in English. She had heard it was common for vendors to know a bit of that language. It was more likely than them being able to know Russian. Clearly her attempt at speaking to the woman wasn’t going well. Thankfully, she had been fluent in English. “No, it’s for my brother,” Ana replied. She hoped Ashton would like it. He had changed a great deal since they were kids, she just hoped he would accept the gift. “We have things for you too,” the woman said rather quickly. She reached down and brought up two different trays. One with necklaces and one with rings. Anastasia hadn’t really been planning on getting anything for herself, but she thought she might as well, after all, this would likely help the woman out in some way. Ana scanned over a few things, eventually settling on a couple of the rings and a necklace with a unique little stone on it. The woman put all the trinkets in a little pouch bag, pulling it tight. Ana paid her, tipping her extra for her service and setting her pouch of trinkets in with her purse she’d brought out with her. After that, she visited nearly every stand, buying something from everyone. She even tried some of the food, within reason of the vegetarian diet she’d adopted. She tried the unique fruit. Some of it she’d tried before, and while she was sure it could have been brought in somehow to her home, she hadn’t tried it in a while. It was the first time she’d enjoyed any sort of outing, the first time she’d enjoyed eating. By the time she got back to the palace, her pockets were fully, she was carrying bags of things she’d bought and she couldn’t help but smile. She was so pleased with herself that she even let the guards handle the bags when she got in instead of fighting with them to do it herself – something she’d done back home just for the chance to get a little bit of variety in her life. Heading back into her room, she decided she’d take a look at some of the things she bought before she was expected to attend dinner. She set all of her things out on her bed, looking through the different trinkets, bobbles and foods until she eventually came about the pouch given to her by the woman at the first stand she’d visited. Opening it up, she took out the necklace. It wasn’t by any means fancy. Definitely not within the price range of what she was used to spending. But it had a charm to it. In its simplicity maybe. Or perhaps in the little green gem. Heading over to the mirror, she glanced at her reflection carefully. She still looked sickly and thin. And she knew her wig was just a bit too well done to possibly look real. It didn’t match her body, or her thin face. She pulled the necklace over her head and let it rest on her chest. It suited her she thought. She couldn’t help but think the wig still didn’t. It didn’t take long before she decided to tug it off. Her hair wasn’t patchy anymore. But it was still short, and she had something that resembled peach fuzz. But it was better than the heavy, itchy and far too warm wig she’d been sporting. She ran her hands over her head, scratching a little at her scalp. She felt far better than she had with it on. It was freeing to be free of it. Even if she looked sickly, for the first time in months, she thought she might be okay with it. Things wouldn’t be the same, that was true. But at least for the first time in a long time she was looking at a face she actually recognized. One with hope.

7 Ways To Wear Camo, The Menswear Trend Hidden In Plain Sight

7 Ways To Wear Camo, The Menswear Trend Hidden In Plain Sight
Camouflage is one of menswear’s greatest ironies. For a print that was designed to let members of the military go incognito, it’s pretty damn conspicuous everywhere else.
It’s this brick-through-a-window level of obviousness which has made camouflage an unappealing sartorial prospect for many men. In camo you’re pretty much a walking target for judgement, admiring or otherwise.
That said, much like all your other menswear favourites pilfered from the war cabinet camouflage is a stone cold style classic provided that you do it right. That’s where we come in. Here are our seven foolproof ways to don camouflage, which is trending (again) this season. It’s military precision, wardrobe style.
The Camo Jacket
It’s indisputable that the camo field jacket is one of the safest ways to wear the military’s so called ‘invisible’ print. Evidence of this is offered by the fact that it’s been worn by both menswear icons and street subcultures alike – the ultimate crowd pleaser.
“There are a range of interesting camouflage bomber jackets out there which can easily be dressed down and grounded by wearing tones such as black or grey to complete the rest of your look,” says menswear stylist Nas Abraham who has worked with the likes of Mr Porter, Barbour and Gap. “If you’re feeling bold and want to stand out rather than blend in, avoid the bomber and field jacket altogether and instead try a camouflage anorak or longer line outerwear.”
The beauty of camouflage jackets is that they’re foolproof. Anything that could be considered a wardrobe staple will have no trouble getting along with your military-inspired outer layer. A camo parka jacket, for example, will work wonders thrown over a navy suit, while at the weekend, a camo bomber can easily be recruited alongside a T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.
Zara
The Camo T-Shirt
Unless yours is emblazoned with some criminally unfunny tagline, it’s pretty hard to mess up wearing a T-shirt. True to form, a camouflage T-shirt is a doddle to parachute into your wardrobe and is one of the most accessible ways to get to grips with this perennial pattern.
First things first: you’ll need to go logo-free in a T-shirt because camo’s got enough action going on without throwing bold branding into the mix. As for fit, you can either take the classic route: a slim, fitted design, rolled gently at each sleeve. Or, if you want to make things feel more modern try an oversized design to join the streetwear platoon. Though to avoid accusations of being in the throes of a mid-life crisis, take stock of the number of birthdays you’ve clocked up before you attempt this.
Completing the rest of your look is quite literally black and white: a pair of straight-cut black or white jeans (never blue) will do a heroic job of soothing camo’s attention-grabbing nature. Slide into a pair of grey suede sneakers and you’re doing camo without making a big deal out of it.
Pull & Bear
Camo Trousers
Camouflage trousers last enjoyed mass popularity in the mid 90s when it was statistically impossible to find a boyband without at least one member sporting a pair. Since then, they’ve stepped back into their lane and rarely make an appearance outside of war zones.
“Camouflage trousers may not be as easy to slide into your wardrobe as a camo jacket, but this doesn’t mean they are untouchable,” says Suzie Street, a London-based menswear stylist who has worked with the likes of Rafferty Law and Tinie Tempah. “Traditionally, camo trousers most often feature a looser fit but I would advise against this shape: a slimmer, tailored fit will not only be more flattering but it will also be a lot easier to wear without looking like you’ve just exited a 90s rave. Also, be wary of unnecessary embellishment such as zips or pockets as this could be overkill.”
Unlike up top where you’ve got a bit more freedom to play around, you’ll need to be mindful of your camo’s colour too says Street. “Stick with a darker camo print for trousers and pair with a simple white or grey T-shirt, a slick white leather trainer or black Converse for a considered look.”
Zara
Camouflage Accessories
For those closet camo admirers who would rather chew off their own arm than go fully under cover, there’s hope yet. You can try the patchwork print with a judiciously placed accessory.
The beauty of camo accessories is that they work well with practically every kind of ‘fit you can think of. They are a streetwear kid’s best friend: a cross-body bag, cap or backpack offers a hit of urban realness to an otherwise simple (no doubt eye-wateringly expensive) all-black look.
More surprising is the fact that camo accessories are ripe for the picking for white collar workers too. A camo tote is just the thing for sprucing up an uneventful navy suit, while more creative types stand to gain serious swag from adding this hand-held hero to their fallback Oxford shirt, chino and sneakers set-up.
Espionage
Colourful Camo
No matter the season, the lion’s share of camo menswear has stuck to army-fatigue colours: khakis, desert sands and occasionally darker black-ops colour schemes. Until now that is. Spearheaded by luxury Italian design house, Valentino, the print has started trying new colours on for size and the result sits somewhere between camo as we know it and a lurid paint palette. Discretion definitely isn’t the objective here.
With all those colours and shapes on one garment, colourful camo is not the kind of thing you can pick up off the floor and run out of the house in without taking fire (usually from your mates). Extreme caution is necessary. Swerve colourful camo on your legs unless you’re opting for shorts as we’ve yet to see trousers work IRL. Instead, choose a camo outer layer such as a jacket or overshirt which you can slip on over a white T-shirt and blue jeans without feeling completely and utterly ridiculous.
Want something a little more adventurous? Try bright camo outerwear over a classic navy suit for a streetwise (but still smart) wardrobe switch up.
J.Crew
Camo Shorts
Any man who has survived puberty will have worn camo shorts at some point, but it’s a mission that rarely goes well. Camo shorts are a hard look to pull off without looking like that drunk guy at a music festival who’s lost all his friends.
The first things to bear in mind are how much fabric and how many details you’re looking at. If you go in for all those bells and whistles (voluminous pockets, zips) then you give off nutty-survivalist vibes. Tailored camo shorts are a much safer option, again letting the loud and proud print do all the talking. Add a pair of penny loafers and a white T-shirt or knit and you’ve successfully avoided crap camo.
That’s not to say you can’t go for a more battle-ready pair though: just be wary of how much detail is on offer. By choosing large pockets, zips or drawstring hems (but never all three) you can nod to this garment’s heritage without going full squaddie.
Zara
The Camo Shirt
As well as Vietnam veterans, the camo shirt seems to be standard-issue for rebellious teenagers. But wear it without that humblebrag band T-shirt and those scruffy skate shoes and you’ve got a thoroughly grown-up wardrobe addition.
“When thinking of the camouflage shirt, the mind often conjures up images of G.I Joe, but it’s actually much more wearable than you’d think,” says Street. “It can be used as a good layering tool to break up a potentially safe (possibly boring) look. Wear yours open, with a grey or black tee underneath, a simple pair of jeans down below and a lightweight parka on top. It’ll make for a classic yet interesting day outfit.”
In the colder months you’ll need to seek out a thicker overshirt, while warmer weather calls for a lighter cotton design. Not all camo shirts are created equal though, and Street recommends cherry picking from a few select brands. “Carhartt, Dickies and Levi’s always produce a good staple camo shirt, while high-end designer brands such as Valentino and Off-White are championing this print at the moment if you’re feeling flusher.”

2019 Audi A4 Allroad Release Date, Changes, Interior, Prices
2019 Audi A4 Allroad Release Date, Changes, Interior, Prices – Once the previous-generation 2019 Audi A4 Allroad changed the actual 2019 Audi A4 Avant in the U.S. design array for your 2013 product calendar year, revenue improved by 50 %. Yes, hard-core Audi enthusiasts went ballistic about the lack of a regular A4 wagon-or A4 Avant in Audi-talk-but understand that an ordinary station wagon isn’t what the Us car-getting public buys. While many individuals, such as us, would prefer the low, sportier wagon it provides within Europe, Audi can also be in the industry of marketing automobiles and create profit. So, once the latest, B9-technology 2019 Audi A4 range introduced previously this year, it had been a fairly easy decision for U.S. item manager Anthony Garbis to neglect the regular wagon and go right for the Allroad, now having the A4 moniker too.
This particular 2019 Audi A4 Allroad comes after the method that delivered two predecessors, the 2019 Audi A6 Allroad and also the B8-generation 2019 Audi A4-based Allroad to our shores: Elevate a wagon, put in the long-term side of roof rails, as well as a strike on some chunky entire body cladding. That’s oversimplifying the job but is not entirely away bottom. The modest 1.3-” raise arises from equally for a longer time springs and dampers (.9 “) as well as a bit bigger all-time of year Continental ProContact TX radials (.4 “). The roof rails are aluminum and stout adequate that they might work as tow hooks. That cladding provides no size for that of a regular A4, even though it seems as though it can. Better still, the add-ons aren’t just unprocessed plastic. Garbis, having a hint of pride within his speech, confirms that this two-sculpt Allroad’s tack-on parts are decorated matte black color, an expensive method, we are informed. Those that dislike the 2-tone look can get the plastic-type decorated to fit the body color for $1575. The conventional panoramic sunroof’s punctured sunshade is among very few interior oversights-it does not effectively block out the sun.
2019 Audi A4 Allroad Interior
Smaller compared to the 2019 Audi A6 Allroad (clearly), the 2019 Audi A4 continues to maintains that estate ability which will make it a doddle to ferry about a tiny loved ones. Loading altitudes are more genial, and smashing via urban potholes is fine once you have the meat to the coupe. When it compared to the Audi A4 Avant that no bigger, it merely feels more useable.

(The monotone option itself expenses $1000 but exists just with metallic paints that add $575 to the sticker label.)
2019 Audi A4 Allroad Exterior
Those familiar with Audi’s most current decorations will feel relaxed within the Allroad. Sound black color can be obtained, but the two-strengthen interiors are specifically full of look and truly feel. In the $44,950 High-quality trim design, analog gauges fill up the binnacle right behind a nice and well-contoured steering wheel. Those that want the 12.3-in ., complete-color Digital Cockpit with its configurable gauges and also motorist-focused screen will have to choose the High-quality Additionally to trim ($3000) along with its Technologies package ($3250), which also includes navigation, an 8.3-in. Middle screen, and sightless-spot tracking. Other Premium also improvements include a 19-presenter, 755-watt Bang, And Olufsen audio system, front and rear parking detectors, distance-crucial access, LED headlights, and 4G LTE connection and its connected in-car Wi-Fi.
2019 Audi A4 Allroad Specs
All of the 2.-liter turbo-4 remains to be the simply engine selection for the brand new Allroad, and it also sets specifically using a seven-pace dual-clutch system transmitting. The A4 Allroad’s brought up suspension indicates it is situated 1.3 inches higher above the ground than the standard A4 sedan, and contains an “Offroad” traveling function; we continue to would not encourage taking it on the Rubicon pathway.
Raising the car a bit more than a single win . Does not do a lot to erode all of the driving a car dynamics from the previously skillful A4. As opposed to the bit sloppy on-middle wobble we found in the 2019 Audi A4 sedan’s directing, the Allroad’s keeps track of directly and true, no matter what Travel Select options is involved, then the braking systems deliver inspired opinions with out so much as being a touch of sponginess. Between Comfort and ease, Auto, Vibrant, and Personal settings, we discovered Auto to do everything nicely. The steering will go excessively lighting in Convenience function, although selecting Powerful cranks the actual firmness from the adaptive dampers past what a pseudo SUV requires. Auto is the “just right” porridge for this backwoods carry.
See Also : 2019 Audi S4 Manual Transmission
The sole function the Allroad delivers that is not in the 2019 Audi A4 quiver is Offroad. Whenever picked, directing effort is lowered, and Quattro engages the driveshaft on a regular basis (with many clutch system falling when turning to avoid driveline binding). Offroad mode additionally changes all of the flexible dumplings and disables all of the forwards-crash warning and impact treatment in order never to inadvertently cease all of the cars through hitting a plant you weren’t going to hit anyway. We all drove the Allroad lower 90 mls of Wyoming logging roadways and involved Offroad a few of the time. As had been true on paved streets, the Auto mode did work just as well as the Offroad setting. You may see a better advantage to Offroad function in deep snow or on specifically icy roadways.
2019 Audi A4 Allroad Release date and Prices
The 2019 Audi A4 Allroad’s starting price rises $1300 to $44,950 for the base High-quality cut degree. That attacks us as sensible, due to the brand new Allroad’s larger dimensions and its up-graded 2.-liter turbo four-tube that creates 252 horse power, 32 hp more than its predecessor. Regular equipment consists of adaptive dampers, leather seating, a spectacular sunroof, energy front side seating, forward crash caution, Apple company CarPlay and Android os Auto, and automatic environment control. Far better-prepared $47,950 Premium Additionally and $52,350 Status clip levels are also available.
