atla crack au where zuko and azula burn the palace down as kids (like 12 and 10, respectively, pre-banishment but post-grandpacide), run away to avoid consequences, and somehow end up "discreetly" living in the abandoned fire nation ship in the south pole ("discreetly" is a word which here means "all the adults know they're there bc they have massive arguments every other day, and when hakoda's nearby he "drops" things that might be useful")
ozai ends up blaming the palace fire on iroh and banishes him. he must capture the children to regain his honor (translator's note: this is adult speak for "get their asses back here so i can ground them for the rest of their lives")

Take that I just found out exists: "If Azula kept a secret for once then Ursa wouldn't have to interfere and Ozai wouldn't have banished her."
To the people who actually believe this stupidity, you do realize that would mean Zuko would be dead in canon, right? RIGHT?

I think that modern AUs miss out on Zuko's honor complex by not having him become a judge out of spite just so that he gets called "Your Honor." 🤡☠
I've read lots of cool fanfics, but never one that addresses this. I should probably write on myself to scratch that itch. OMG imagine the potential.
And we could even have a badass origin story like Zuko originally wanting to be a corporate lawyer like Ozai, but after witnessing how scummy smarmy corrupt he is, Zuko gets kicked out and/or the scar and he decides that he'd rather be a good lawyer and later on eventually becomes a judge while healing under Iroh's tutelage. Iroh could be anything from a retired seasoned General (and Ozai's complex of inferiority could be because he somehow failed to get into the army ?? ) To a formerly brilliant corp lawyer who was even more ruthless than Ozai before realizing after the loss of his son (not necessarily in a war, maybe just an epiphany as he finally empahizes with oppressed/poor people who lose their kids everyday be it through direct attacks, lack of access to basic services like healthcare, OR criminal rings) and quits to open a tea shop and chill.
He uncovers Ozai's smuggling rings or whatever crimes he has committed through the help of FBI-like (minus the overall bad rep IRL) agents as well as independent investigators with various motivations (i.e: Maybe Katara and Sokka's mom was tragically linked to a hate crime or was silenced as a witness or sth, but anyway cue the Gaang and Zuzu finally joining forces), and BAMF, team Ozai falls from grace (idk what we should do with Zhao? Have him killed by Ozai ?).
Azula is a tricky one though. She could get redeemed, already be redeemed by the start of the story, or be a villain. My own little take would be that she'd act a little bit like Franziska von Karma. I don't recall if she directly addressed Manfred's monstrosity, but there were hints in the games I played (I didn't play all of them) that she didn't want to follow his footsteps.
She'd be very entertaining and chaotic regardless of which side she is on. 🤣

a version of dream of the red chamber set in the world of atla - how would it even look like? the mere concept itself is fascinating
omfg lmfao are you reading my texts somehow bc I was literally saying this just the other day:
Tumblr media
now obviously even though ba sing se is inspired by qing dynasty china, it’s also modeled off of beijing, whereas the jias live in nanjing (with the exception of yuanchun). and other regions in the earth kingdom obviously do not map onto qing dynasty china. gaoling/the beifong estate is distinctly tang dynasty, and other locations in the ek are inspired by korean, vietnamese, etc. cultures (no, the ek doesn’t just = imperial china lmfao). but mapping this novel thematically does not necessarily require mapping it geographically.
honglou meng pertains very specifically to its setting and how class factors into the nature of its world as well as the dynamics among its teeming ensemble. so even if you replicated it among the beifongs in their tang dynasty furnishings, or among the fn royal family in their…distinct cultural mishmash, it would still necessarily be located within an aristocratic mansion. the act of “leaving the garden” (to borrow andrew plak’s phrase) is a universal one (and I do intend to someday write a larger piece on the space of the garden as a site of illusion in hlm, paradise lost, and utena!), but the specific disillusionment and fall from grace that cao so painfully and personally describes implies a certain myopic, delusional grandeur to begin with. it is a novel fundamentally concerned with illusion and the hollow trappings of power, which is why there is something so distinctly shocking about when the lius come to visit (one of my favorite episodes), as well as, of course, the entire tragic denouement as each beauty of jinling fades. so to map it onto atla requires focalizing a class that is distinctly unheroic within atla’s ideological framework, whether it be the cloistered and excising upper ring, the shallow and stifling beifong mansion, or of course, the perfidious evil of the fire nation royal family.
i’ve said before that baby zuko is just kind of swagless baoyu. baoyu if he had no rizz and the only girls he knew were his sister’s friends. the relationship w his father is similar, although ursa doesn’t carry the same power and respect that his grandmother does, so his situation is obviously more dire. like, at one point baoyu’s father beats him so badly that he cannot walk for a not insignificant period of time, not to mention that time his brother literally poured hot wax on his eye lmfao. but obviously zuko was born with the opposite of a jade in his mouth, he was always dismissed as worthless from birth. he would write an elegy for his lost childhood though. he would.
i see azula as a sort of combination of xifeng and tanchun, who are of course both quite similar figures, but have enough distinct differences that it would feel somewhat reductive not to combine them. each is poised, subtle, sharp, devious, and exacting. however, while xifeng is overbold, azula is obedient to a fault. azula is, fundamentally, ruled by fear. and tanchun’s status as having to prove herself due to the circumstances of her birth as well as living up to xifeng’s skill managing the household makes her more poised and refined in her position of authority. xifeng, for all her brilliance, is illiterate. she is incredible, but her refusal to submit begets enemies. yes, azula’s hubris is also her downfall, but it is a hubris of ideology, not of ego. she is fiery yet subdued, ruthless yet obedient. she is mindful of the rules, and succeeds within them. even as she enjoys wielding power, she knows her limits. it is unclear whether xifeng, for all her ingratiating social savvy, ever truly does.
now, as for mai and ty lee, the parallels between daiyu and baochai should be evident. daiyu is certainly more outspoken than mai, but the similarities in their dynamic are nonetheless clear to us, especially in terms of how both ty lee and baochai navigate their social roles through a very deliberate performance of constant acquiescence and pleasantness. a lot of my friends find baochai quite loathsome, but in fact i think that she is one of the most underrated characters in the novel, her social savvy almost frightening at times. i suppose you could also claim that ty lee is quite like xiren, then, as a highly savvy social climber, but that also depends on how you read ty lee’s class background. regardless, i find their respective modes of self-expression and interplay as perceived opposites (especially wrt daiyu and baochai, who literally form a triangle with baoyu) fascinating. not to mention that if mai ever overheard baoyu’s elegy to his lost childhood, she would also ruthlessly lambast his word choices in the guise of being helpful.
toph is shi xiangyun. no explanation needed there. yue also has major daiyu energy. i can’t think of any other aristocrats. but even beyond devising these fun 1:1 (or 1:2) analogues, how the themes of illusion map across both texts is very interesting to consider. the greatest illusion in atla is the illusion of separation and domination, whereas the great illusion of hlm is that of an eternal, idealized state of grandeur, as well as the perfect innocence of childhood friendship and freedom from the solemn constraints of adult life. so while both texts do intentionally shatter these illusions, atla’s shattering is a victory against the logic of imperialism, whereas hlm’s shattering is a tragic elegy to an idealized past. hence why i position zuko as baoyu, as he is fundamentally motivated by a nostalgia to reclaim the life he has since lost. then again, aang (known swagful 12 year old babychad, in possession of much rizz) is similarly motivated by a (far more potent, imo) nostalgic desire for reclamation of the past, and with it, his place in the world, so he has equal, if not more, claim to functioning as a baoyu analogue. (and i guess you could also read katara as a sort of daiyu figure, although far more assertive and powerful.) the land of illusion is manifold and deep; it contains room for everyone.
also, i am now just realizing that you may have just been implying “what if the jia family had bending” instead of whatever this long, stream of consciousness, pointless ramble was. well in that case they’d obviously be earthbenders, although daiyu would be a firebender and baochai would be a nonbender (obviously). but like. swagever.

The thing is. The thing is. Azula and Zuko DO get along when they get along. They clearly know each other backwards and forwards. They walk right into each others rooms and keep secrets from their parents and in The Beach azula goes and gets zuko when he’s in their family’s old house says come down to the beach with me. This place is depressing. They are not like…..irredeemably always hating each other since day 1. In an abusive family dynamic different kids not only react differently, but they’re treated differently. Zuko has always been the scapegoat, and Azula was encouraged by her father to treat him that way AND encouraged by her mother to resent him just by the fact that she has eyes and witnessed the way their parents treated each of them respectively. It’s just like. More azula and zuko sibling content! When she’s not trying to kill him they don’t NOT get along, they simply have a contentious sibling relationship which is in fact, a very normal type of sibling relationship to have!!!!!

“Undeserved Kindness” and ATLA
There are many characters in ATLA who show kindness to others who have done nothing to “deserve” or “show they earned it,” to even their own deadly enemies. Sometimes this kindness has great personal costs.  Often this kindness fails to achieve its objectives, and it rarely leads to the “undeserving” recipient changing their behavior for the better. However, it always serves to illuminate the character of the giver of kindness, to demonstrate what kind of person they are.
Let us take Aang’s treatment of Zuko, for example.  Aang saves Zuko in “The Blue Spirit,” even though Zuko has spent the past half-season trying to capture him. This doesn't earn Aang any rewards. In the short term, what this gets Aang is Zuko trying to burn his face off, and it unclears how much, if at all, this episode of kindness plays in Zuko eventually switching sides. But do you what? Even if this action had brought no long-term rewards, even if Zuko had never switched sides or if he had died somewhere in a ditch in the Earth Kingdom, Aang saving Zuko would still demonstrate Aang’s kindness and compassion.
Let’s turn to Aang saving Zuko in “The Siege of the North.” This doesn’t lead to Zuko changing his behavior. As far as we see, he never even acknowledges the Gaang had saved him, and he not only attempts to capture Aang at least once after this but straight up tries to kill the entire Gaang in Book 3.  But again, Aang demanding that they save Zuko, despite everything Zuko has done to him, demonstrates what sort of person Aang is.
We can turn to Zuko offering to save Zhao in the same episode, which I think might be Zuko’s most compassionate moment in the show. Zhao is an awful person and just tried to kill Zuko, and likely would again if given the chance.  He doesn’t take Zuko’s hand, and it’s doubtful that Zuko could have saved him anyways. Yet Zuko offering and Zuko trying to save even a mortal enemy says something fundamental about Zuko, just like Zhao refusing Zuko’s offer says something about Zhao.
We can say much the same about Katara offering to heal Zuko’s scar.  Zuko has done nothing to deserve this kindness and has repeatedly done awful things to Katara and her friends, but Katara still feels empathy for him and acts compassionately toward him. Does this lead to any sort of positive result for her? No, and I don’t think scene played any real role in Zuko switching sides. Does this scene still say volumes about Katara? Hell yes.
We can turn to Azula apologizing to Ty Lee in “The Beach.” Azula manages to accomplish her short term objective of making Ty Lee feel better, but this doesn't fix her relationship with her friend or solve the toxic dynamics underlying it. Nor does this net Azula any long-term benefit. Still, this scene says a lot about who Azula is.
And the same can be said for Ty Lee’s decision to of her own volition volunteer to help Azula learn how to flirt. Does this fix her relationship with her friend? No. Does it even end up netting Azula a boyfriend in the short term? No. But it still says a lot about who Ty Lee is as a person.
Finally, we can turn to Azula generally being kind to Zuko in “The Beach”(although there are moments when she’s a bit of a jerk to him, she’s generally pretty nice). Does this fix Azula’s relationship with her brother? No. Does it lead to Zuko showing the slightest shed of kindness to her? No.  Does this prevent Zuko from taking actions which have strong negative impacts on her? No. Does it say volumes on who Azula is as a person, her relationship with her brother, and how she wants her relationship with her brother to be? Yes.
And now we turn to Iroh’s treatment of Azula. Many people claim that he was totally justified to hate her because she was a threat to Zuko, or claim that he couldn’t have “saved her” anyways. That misses the point. Iroh not demonstrating the slightest shed of empathy or compassion toward (and it would have been so easy for the writers to imply that he did) his abused child soldier 14 year old niece says volumes about him. Iroh not demonstrating any regret about what had happened to her says volumes about him(and the show very clearly showed that he felt a lot of regret on how bad his relationship with Ozai had gotten).

Fic-to-Art #24: Sokka holds Azula before the destroyed Bloodlust Spear
As some of you may have noticed, my patrons are a little bit wild and they just thrive in angst :'D This month's prompt for the artwork was "cliffhanger", and the winning option in the poll was the cliffhanger from chapter 226: Azula had taken the most dangerous wound she'd sustained in the entire story. Even then, she managed to destroy the Bloodlust Spear. The corruption of the spear affected her once the weapon was broken... and the consequences were almost deadly.
Things have certainly been really hard for our girl ever since that day... but at least she has recovered to a degree from this very serious wound. The specific cliffhanger for that chapter, though, is the moment when Sokka holds Azula in desperation, not knowing what to do and how to save her in the middle of this life-or-death situation she's in.
This artwork isn't a 1:1 depiction of what I saw in my mind when I wrote that scene, but honestly? It's surprisingly close to that. And I don't say that lightly x'D things just fell into place, and as much as it hurts to draw my girl hurting, and to draw my boy suffering for her fate, I really hope I conveyed both how fragileAzula she was in these circumstances, and how anguished Sokka was, too. Expressiveness in art is difficult, it really is...
If you want to be part of the creative process behind these pieces, a $1 pledge on Patreon will allow you to participate in it by suggesting prompts and voting on the monthly poll, as well as reading early snippets for each upcoming chapter!
