Fictional Men Ranked Least to Most Likely to Eat Pussy
When I’m bored my powers turn to evil. Happy to announce that @earlymodernlesbian is not only is an enabler but wrote a gay companion piece which you can and should read here!!!!
10. Mr. Rochester — Jane Eyre
No chance of oral here. Sorry, I don’t think he puts Jane first once in this book. She’s too busy being a ministering angel to ever consider anything above and beyond her wifely duty and I don’t think Rochester ever really stops being a narcissist long enough to consider her desires or even, you know, her life. I bet his french mistress asked him to do it once and he was like “ew, no”
9. Rhett Butler — Gone With the Wind
Rhett says shit like “you ought to be kissed and by someone who knows how,” and then I bet would go down on you one time just to show you what you were missing out on, and then he’d tease you about how much you liked it for months afterwards and refuse to do it again. Imagine how much more normal Scarlett might have been if she was getting regular oral.
8. Konstantin Levin — Anna Karenina
Definitely knows about eating pussy and can’t stop thinking about it. I think he might even shamefully obsess about it in conjunction with his dirty peasant laborer fantasies. However, he also has the ascetic monk thing going on so I bet he hardcore represses his desires to actually do it. That being said, I think if he ever got over himself he’d be way into it.
7. Mr Darcy — Pride and Prejudice
I’m not convinced Mr. Darcy even knows going down on girls is a thing, but once Bingley had filled him in I bet he would try it. Elizabeth I’m sure would not object but I can’t see this happening more than once or twice.
6. Oliver Mellors — Lady Chatterley’s Lover
Mellors has the distinct advantage and disadvantage of being the only character from a book that actually describes sex acts. If it was based solely on what he said (being turned on by getting women off, not shutting up about Connie’s ass, talking about how much he wants a “real” woman with a “real” body), I’d say absolutely he wants to get down there and would use the cringiest words possible to describe it. However, they textually do almost everything else so I feel like if he ate her out DH Lawrence would have told us 😔
EDIT: he goes down on her in the most recent movie!!! vindicated
5. Jonathan Harker — Dracula
Jonathan is obsessed with Mina (rightfully) and loves her to the end of the earth, so of course he’d do anything for her, including eat her out. However, there’s so much putting women on goddess pedestals in Dracula that he might just like, repeatedly kiss her between her legs and and be like, “am I doing this right?” and Mina would be like “I love you so much Jonathan” but she wouldn’t actually get off, you know?
4. Heathcliff — Wuthering Heights
Someone who is willing to dig up your grave would definitely be down to lick your pussy. Cathy and Heathcliff are so rabid about each other I bet oral is like, one of the least weird things they would have done to each others bodies if they had the chance
3. Gabriel Oak — Far from the Madding Crowd
Not intimidated by Bathsheba’s independence and position of power. Could take care of her and spoil her if she ever let him and they both know it. Plus, not afraid to get down and dirty and do farm work for her. If a man cures your sheep and saves your hay before a storm, what else will he do for you? 👀
2. Mr. Knightley — Emma
Mr. Knightly is the definition of a service top. 100% confident in his masculinity and completely comfortable putting Emma’s needs and wants first, but not gonna let her get away with being high and mighty. Excellent combination of obsessed with her but still in charge. ;) She would get neurotic about it and he would tell her to chill out and he’d be right.
1. George Emerson — A Room with a View
George chugs his respect women juice and is so turned on by the idea of women as individuals with unique desires he can’t stand to see Lucy betray herself by marrying a robot. “I want you to have your own thoughts even when I hold you in my arms” ?!? “The desire to govern a woman lies very deep, and men and women must fight it together before they shall enter the Garden” !! What’s not to love about a pro-Eve humanist who enjoys swimming naked and is constantly telling everyone to be less embarrassed about desire and the body? No question George is going to be eating Lucy out every day of their lives and getting off on it himself.
Bonus:
Marius Pontmercy — Les Misérables
Shy, but also French. Not sure which one wins out here.

“To you, with love.”
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: You and Tom do the interview with puppies, and at the end of it, a truth is revealed.
“Tickle, tickle, tickle.”
“Get in there, guys.”
“Hello beautiful.”
“You can go to sleep and come to live with (Y/N) and I to our apartment. Darling, there is no other option but to get married and adopt these puppies.” Tom teases you, winking at you as he plays with the puppies in front of him.
You look away after a while of looking at him, but every minute, every second your heart is ahead of you and makes you think and wonder what is that exciting feeling that you have every time you look into his eyes full of love.
The stage is set for you two as you sit in front of the cameras, in a pink background.
“Hello everyone, my name is (Y/N) (Y/L/N) and I play Avery in Spiderman: no way home and Anna in the film adaptation of the book Anna and the French kiss.”
"I love those." Tom says and shoots you a flirtatious look, making you laugh as he points in your direction before saying the next words, full of pride. “Hi, I'm Tom Holland, I’m her boyfriend and we are going to get married to adopt these puppies."
"Stop it." You say shyly, holding back a smile, although if you and Tom Holland could choose your favorite place in the world, to live in an eternity, it would be next to each other, no matter where you two were, but, as best friends, as everyone in the world knows you two for.
“I play Peter Parker and Étienne St. Clair and we're here with Buzzfeed Celeb to play with these puppies while answering questions, so let’s get started and please bring the puppies!"
What is the best part of playing Avery and Peter?
“Well… For me one of the best parts was to work with…” You leave the answer half-hearted as Tom raises his eyebrows playing with the puppies, sweetly waiting for you to say his name and not that of another great actor or actress with whom you had the opportunity to share screen during that time. "Tom Holland of course.”
"Yes!" Tom sings victory when he hears his name, and he smiles beautifully, because Tom has the most beautiful smile you have ever seen, with those autumn-colored eyes and semi-long hair that make him look like an angel or a dream that you would never want to wake up from, and in that moment, you wonder how he is still a silent and unattainable love even when you had him by your side, so close, yet, so unreachable. "She loves me very much."
"I could say other great names, but... well." You feign seriousness as he shoots you a doubtful look, making you laugh when he looks hurt for a second as you hold a puppy. “The best thing about playing Avery is that we see how her personality evolves throughout these three movies, her starting out as someone closed and tough to someone you can trust with your life because you know she will protect you, because she learned to trust in those who showed her sincerity, like Peter.”
"Yeah, you're right, I mean... for me the best thing was seeing these two characters grow." Tom says, following the thread of the conversation. “I loved the fight sequences that we had that we got to do ourselves. We both trained hard to be able to play the characters that we dream of at some point in our lives so that's great. And I think what makes it so special is that there was real chemistry between us, which is why you can see Peter and Avery so close in the movie. The same with Anna and Étienne."
Is it true that on the poster for Spider-man: No Way Home, isn't that Tom Holland?
"I'm not." Tom laughs.
"It's definitely not, that's not his body."
"Aw, look at her how she knows my body so well." Tom wags his eyebrows at the camera, earning a smack on the arm from you making him laugh. “But no, it's not really me. Also, when have you seen me do that pose on camera? It's strange!"
"Now I'm curious to know who is the person behind that pose. Right, baby?" You say to the puppy in your arms.
“Right, darling.” Tom answer.
Wasn't it strange to have kissed several times in the movies considering that they are best friends?
You and Tom look at each other for a moment, your cheeks turning pink from the question you both silently asked yourselves.
“We try to be as professional as possible.” Tom says, scratching the belly of another puppy. “I think the kisses we gave each other came out naturally because of the love we have for each other. It wasn't uncomfortable at all."
In a certain part it was true. You've known each other since you were kids, but your feelings for him got in the way every time you had to do a romantic scene, yet you were as professional as possible.
If you could be in any other series or movie, what would it be?
“I would like to participate in temptation. (Y/N) is doing super well there and it's a great story. I would like to be a part or at least do a cameo.”
"I can make some calls." You laugh, though you're also serious if it means having him around for months again.
If you weren't a movie star, what profession would you have chosen?
"Tom would definitely have been a carpenter." You joke.
"I think so." He laughs. “I'm not good at math but I'm good at putting things together. I think (Y/N) would have been a doctor or a vet, she loves animals. That's why she doesn't eat meat, although she doesn't know what she's missing."
Could it be possible that there is a relationship between you not told to the public?
You and Tom laugh awkwardly.
“We've been friends pretty much since we were born,” says Tom. “Our moms have been best friends since college and when they both got pregnant the same year it was like: our kids have to be best friends too. But with us it happened naturally, we grew up together, we like the same things and we are united. (Y/N) knows that I love her with all my heart.”
With a puppy in his arms, Tom lies in your lap and gives the camera a sweet smile.
Do you know that fans ship you two together?
“I've seen a lot of that online." You reply. “We have seen a lot of fan art about us, we have seen requests for us to participate together in different book-to-film adaptations because they say we would do a great job together. I think it's lucky that the fans like us so much.”
Have you practiced kissing scenes in private or is it something that comes naturally?
Tom chuckles.
“I will leave that question to the public imagination. Since we even won an MTV award for best kiss, 2 times, I'll leave the fans curious."
As the interview flows, you innocently play and flirt a little from time to time, just to soothe that pain of not being able to be together, although neither of you knows exactly why.
Sometimes, life happens in a second, and for Tom Holland and you, falling in love, too.
And even if you don't know it, Tom hates that you're his best friend in the world, because under the starry nights when you can't sleep and you sneak into each other's room to talk, wherever you two are, or just to exist in each other's company. You look like an angel, his angel, his darling as he usually calls you with the appropriate tone of best friend, because no one can know about his love for you. Except everyone knows, that's for sure, except you, but that's fine as long as you don't discover the secret that lies deep in his heart where his love for you will last forever. Tom is selfish, he knows it, because he went out with some girls to try to erase all traces of you, because he knows that one day soon you will fall in love with someone other than him, and even though that hurts his soul.
Tom secretly hates his love for you, but the secret of his hate is for your beauty, for the way you see the world through your eyes, as beautiful and deep as the uncharted ocean itself, for your free heart when you do things so that everyone is happy, for your tender smile that you give to everyone equally without thinking about their weak and fragile heart, and for that blessed dimple that forms on your left cheek when you smile and your eyes do too.
As you two both reach the limo that will take them back to your hotel, you both smile at each other now that the adrenaline has passed and only calm remains in the solitude of the car.
"I think we did great, didn't we, darling?"
"I think so." You say with a certain sadness, because sometimes, you do want to be his darling, but you know that everything had a limit, but you know too that one day you would cross the line that divided friendship from love, and that day, with the force with which you lied saying that there was nothing between you, you decide to tell the truth. "Oh, by the way, I'm going to adopt one of the puppies so we can get married and live happily ever after."
Tom looks at you in astonishment, but his stupor only lasts a few seconds, because for he, brave this time and armed only with the truth of the love he felt for you for half his life, leans down to kiss you softly on the lips before talk.
"I can not wait."

An example of the book's fascinating studies: as I said before, the chapter about Sleeping Beauty notices how fin-de-siècle authors, when "perverting" the tale, focused on the fairies around the baby's cradle - and Jean de Palacio notices that the names chosen for these fairies are very revealing of this "perversion".
Indeed, some authors in their twist-take on Sleeping Beauty, decided to name the group of fairies around the cradle. Anatole France, in his take on the Sleeping Beauty story in 1909, listed eight fairies: Titania, Mab, Viviane, Mélusine, Urgèle, Anna de Bretagne, Mourgue. Catulle Mendès, in 1888, had evoked in his work a total of 12 fairies - Oriane, Urgande, Urgèle, Alcine, Viviane, Holda, Mélusine, Mélandre, Arie, Mab, Titania, Habonde. Jean Lorrain did this list twice - once in 1883 including Habonde, Viviane, Tiphaine, Oriane, Mélusine, Urgèle, Morgane ; and another in 1897, simply removing Urgèle. As for Joséphin Péladan, he also did a double list: one in 1893, Mélusine, Morgane, Viviane, Mourgue, Alcine ; and another in 1895 to which he removed Mourgue to add Urgèle, Nicneven and Abonde.
These names can be taken as just random famous fairy names - but Jean de Palacio highlights that... They are not just chosen randomly, and all denote a way to discredit the fairies or to highlight their ambiguous if not negative nature. Of the recurring names four are taken from the matter of Britain, Arthurian and medieval legends: Viviane, Melusine, Anna de Bretagne (a variation of Anne of Britanny, an actual queen of France) and Mourgue/Morgane. Famous characters, right... But who is present here, around this baby's cradle to deliver gifts? Morgan le Fay, half-main villain of the Arthuriana half-healer of Avalon. Viviane, the good lady of the lake, oh yes... but also a shameless seductress who used Merlin's lust and love to steal his secrets and get rid of him. And Melusine - a national treasure, one of France's beloved legends... And a snake-woman with a strong demonic aura and devilish reputation. Viviane, Melusine and Morgan are all manifestations of the "femme fatale", of the deadly though seductive woman.
There is also a British influence at work here, since we have Titania and Mab, the two famous Shakespearian fairy queens. But Titania's reputation had already been soiled in Shakespeare's play by her mad love for a donkey - sorry, an ass ; as for Mab, in the minds of fin-de-siècle century, she is still strongly associated with the "materialistic atheism" of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Queen Mab". Not perfect example of "godmothers"...
But let's return to Mourgue/Morgue briefly. Yes, she is the Franco-British Arthurian character of Morgan le Fay... But she is also part of the Italian literary tradition thanks to the Orlando Furioso, where she is Morgana, the incest-born sister of the enchantress Alcina who... Oh look! She is there too! Alcina in French is "Alcine" and in the lists you find... Alcuine. Once again, a new discredit over the fairies, as you have two wicked enchantresses dedicated to the dark art - including a lustful old hag so vain she hides her true appearance under a glamour of youth and beauty.
Of the various fairies presented in this list, only Urgèle seems to be free of any same, flaw or negative side - but that's because she is the most "recent" of them all, and not an old literary heritage or cultural figure, but rather a fresh creation. Urgèle was created by Voltaire in 1764 for a short tale/fairytale of his, "Ce qui plait aux dames", "What pleases the ladies", and immediately taken back for an "opéra-comique" adaptation by Favart in 1764, "La Fée Urgèle, ou Ce qui plaît aux dames". And while Théodore de Banville made her a good fairy victim of a wicked enchanter in his comedy "Le Baiser", "The Kiss" ; it didn't refrain Michel Carré and Paul Collin to make her the wicked fairy of Sleeping Beauty in their theatrical-opera adaptation of the fairytale in 1904...
[As a personal note, if you are interest in the other fairy names, Habonde is a variation of Abonde - la fée Abonde was a figure of popular folklore and superstitious beliefs in medieval France, an embodiment of abundance and prosperity fought off by the Church and who was tied to the rite of leaving "meals for the fairies" on special nights such as Christmas or the Epiphany. Holda is of course the same as Frau Holda/Frau Holle of Germanic mythology ; Arie is a reference to "Tante Arie", a Christmas gift-giver of eastern France, and Nicneven is a variation of Nicnevin/Nicnevan of Scottish folklore. I have to admit I do not know about the origins of Mélandre or Tiphaine.]

Beware of the Ides of March
Tumblr media
Quadruple Trouble at the Shelby Mansion...
Tumblr media
TW - Blood, Murder, Death
The two couples entered together, devious smirks all around.  Their host would have no inkling of the actual motivation behind their attendance. Had he, he might have considered revoking the gold leaf edged invitations that he'd had hand delivered to the ladies that were now entering his mother's mansion on the arm of a demon and an angel.
Instead his hubris had overpowered all and he'd sent the invitations.  Seeing them both now, a wide grin spread across his face.  Those that doubted him would soon come to understand that he could come to run the family business just as well as any of them.  He would show them, he would show the all!  And with those two ladies on his side, no one would doubt that he could pull in contacts and associates that would form an empire.
Jasper and Adriel knew they had little to worry about from the mortals milling about.  In fact, the mortals should be fearing them.  Only slightly less lethal were the women they walked in with, the witch and the grigori.  So, there was no fear that anything would happen as they momentarily left the beauties to obtain drinks from their host's bar.
With the latest bauble that Jasper had gifted her, a blood red ruby, around her neck, Eva was damn near untouchable, and Anna was a power immortal in her own right. Eva and Anna were the perfect juxtaposition of dark to light in almost all ways - magic, complexion, business dealings. They could both be ruthless and devious when the need arose, and it most certainly had this night.
For the next few hours, liquor would flow, conversations would as well, dances would be shared, and food enjoyed.  The end goal would never leave the mind or sight of the foursome, but they would allow themselves some enjoyment before the pinnacle of the night.
There was supposed to be an announcement at midnight.  One about the usurping of the throne of the Shelby dynasty. However, that announcement never would come.
At a quarter til, Anna lured their host into his office with seduction she had honed over the years of having to distract beings in New Orleans.  The men were in the room, but kept to the shadows, they were mere observers in this endeavor.  Once the door was closed, and privacy ensured, Anna pulled their host very, very close.
“Michael, you really never should have double crossed Tommy, cher. I'm afraid you have to die now.  And then you can rot in Caligo.” Anna whispered it in his ear and then pulled back just in time to see his eyes go wide as Eva slipped her blade slowly between his ribs to embed it in his heart.
Both women then moved to the side, joining hands as they watched the life drain from Michael Gray.  A large crimson stain growing on the beige oriental rug beneath him.  Jasper and Adriel came to stand on either side of the two women. The quadruple being the last thing Michael saw as he slipped into the hereafter.
“Right then,” Jasper quipped with a devious smirk.  “Time to take this bastard down to Caligo.  Arioch is so looking forward to a new play toy.  He has a new cerberus puppy, you know, needs a chew toy.”  He winked and kissed Eva on the cheek before ripping Michael’s soul free from his body with a *pop*.  “Be right back, love.  Don’t want to keep the Demon of Revenge waiting, he gets testy, you know.”  With a wink, the demon was gone.
“He does enjoy doing that.”  Adriel chuckled as he waved his hand.  All fingerprints and memories of the foursome were removed from the entire party.  When Michael’s body was found, there would be nothing to tie them to it, and therefore, nothing to tie Tommy to it either.  Jean Pierre’s attorney was getting him released from jail presently on the trumped up charges Michael had orchestrated with the Bowery Boys from London.  They’d also brought over a few friends from the French Quarter to help him get some payback for that.
“He promised to take me to see the puppy tomorrow, I’ll have to give our regards to Michael again.  It was such a nice ending to the party.”  Eva smirked and winked.  The surprise on Michael’s face had been quite delicious.
“Want to join us for dinner?  We’re going to myst down to Tuscany for some authentic Italian.  I know an amazing cook down there that is over a century old and has some tricks up her sleeve.  You and Jasper are more than welcome to join.”  Anna smiled.  She was glad her friend had found a woman that complimented him so.  “There’s also a siren down there that needs a talking to, so we’re going to take a dip in the Mediterranean.  Always a fun time.  We like to do it naked.”  She winked at Eva.
“Now, how could I turn down an offer like that?”  Eva grinned deviously.  Naked fun with her demon was always a good time and if that siren looked at him wrong..well, accidents did happen and she knew Anna was always amused when Adriel had to fix things.  She and the other woman did get along so well.   Yes, this was turning out to be a very good night.

Being drunk in a club making out with a stranger was exactly how I saw myself this summer. Grace and I wanted a vacation unlike any that we have ever had before. Most people we know wanted to stay in the states and go to LA or NYC. We wanted to be different. We wanted a picturesque vacation in the French Riviera with a rich nightlife. We stumbled upon Monaco. We had found the cheapest hotel, bought our plane tickets, and set our eyes high.
On our first night in this country we dressed in our best clothes and got ready to go to a club. We found one online and ubered there. When we entered the club it was around 12:00 at night. We beelined our way to the bar and ordered some of the cheapest drinks.
“The drinks are so expensive here,” I whispered. She laughs and nods her head in agreement.
“That’s because we’re in Monaco, Anna.”
I shove her playfully. We finish our drinks at the bar and request one more. After we finish the round we head out to the dance floor. At first we dance with each other until two guys approach us.  “Bonjour,” they say. Both are tall, one is taller than the other. Brown haired, green eyed, distinctively French. “Bonjour,” we say back.
“Vous parlez Français?” One asks, the hotter one. Grace looks over at me confused. I smile at her and then turn toward our new friends.
“Je parle un peu,” I say. Pointing to Grace I say, “Elle ne parle pas Français.”
“Oh okay,” the other says.
“Let’s dance,” Grace says. With all of us in agreement I break towards the guy I found attractive. He breaks towards me as well. Over the course of the night dancing turned into grinding which turned into making out.
With this guy the whole world faded away. The music only spurs us on. My fingers are in his hair, his are on my ass gently digging into it. The moment is euphoric, almost too euphoric for this world. I move my hands to his hips pulling him close. He moves his hands to my hair pulling my head up closer to his. Someone bumps into us and we break apart with a laugh. We go back to making out. I can’t help but to thank my previous boyfriends for the previous experience.
Breaking us out of our moment, someone taps on my shoulder. I pull away from the hottest man I have ever seen with a small smile on my face. The man’s hands fall from my hair to my hips. I turn to look at who tapped me. It’s Grace, her face is flushed and her lips swollen. Grace shouts, “Anna we need to go back, it's 2 am.” He gently squeezes my hips. I look back up to him. He smiles back at me.
“Ok, give me a second,” I shout back at her. Turning back to the stranger, I lean in closer. I breathlessly say, “I haven’t gotten your name.” His hands caress my back. He kisses me again.
“Charles,” he says, “my name is Charles.”
“That’s a beautiful name,” I say as I go and kiss him. Charles kisses me back and pulls me in closer.
“What’s your name, ma belle,” Charles asks.
“Anna,” I whisper.
“Anna?”
 “Oui?”
“I want to see you again.”
“I do too,” I say. Reaching into my handbag, i grab my phone. I open up my contacts and pass my phone to Charles. He puts his number into my phone as cha. With one last kiss I say, “Au revoir,” and make my way through the club holding Grace’s hand. As we stumble our way back to our hotel laughing and talking about our night one thing has been made clear; this will be the best summer of our lives. As we take turns showering I text cha.
Tumblr media
After I plug my phone in and hop in the shower. My thoughts are laced with Charles and what could or could not be. I go to sleep with a smile for my day to come.

godly, illegal, versed — gene and renée drabble
for an ask from @xxluckystrike || request an edit/drabble || i contemplated briefly writing this entirely in french and offering a translation, but figured that i wanted to go a different route, lmao. plus, renée is too wonderful to have to withstand my rusty french lol. there still is french in here and it’s all mine, so if there are fuck-ups that’s why asdfghjkl
When she closed her eyes, she always saw the windows.
Her mother had had a painting like that, years ago, when she was a child. People clustered around a shop window glowing orange with comfort, holding sweets or clothes or toys inside.
“Tout Paris brille ainsi.” She’d murmur, holding her close, pressing a kiss to her hair. “Nous irons là-bas et nous danserons dans cette lumière.”
“Quand?” Renée had asked, her breath shaky, running a finger across the texture of the canvas, wondering how man could make something so godly.
That didn’t much matter, now.
The windows of the Bastogne church did not glow, nor shine, and she did not dance under their light.
((Once, during an artillery barrage, a fire had lit against the bodies of those lined up beside the church. It had cast its deadly light every which way, not so much guidance as a flickering omnipresence.
She had stared at that light's reflections, watched it dance in pools of blood. The man she held, keeping one hand on the side of his face and the other across his collarbones, a poor facsimile of a hug, gasped under her. Une plaie par aspiration thoracique. A sucking chest wound. There was nothing she could do.))
“Mes frères me manquent,” Anna told her once, as they hid in the looming shelter of the church, breaking chocolate in between them. “Mais je ne pense pas que je pourrais partir d'ici.”
Renée had closed her eyes, just briefly, a facsimile of rest. She thought of her mother, her sister. “Oui.” She’d murmured.
Both of them would probably leave, in a moment. With blood on their hands, light gone from their eyes, in their hearts knowing that to leave these screaming boys was to be worse than the devil, worse than god. More illegal than murdering a man in cold blood and leaving him to rot in his lover's bed. But it was better to pretend they had a choice in what they’d chosen than not.
Everything was the same and different; a limbo of the church. Soldiers that were tired and sick and hurting. She wondered if she’d be better at helping them if she wasn’t also.
The boy was new.
She sat with him, on the crumbling bench, unwrapping chocolate. It tasted like ash. Everything did.
He was silent, after commenting on her hands. She wondered if she gave the wrong answer. I never want to see a wounded man again.
She had to think carefully about her words, next, and broke off another square of chocolate to distract herself.
“My mother was a nurse in the Great War.” She told the chocolate wrapper. The boy shifted next to her. Eugène, he said. His name. She’d had an uncle named Eugène. “I wanted to… to help, like her.” Eugène was quiet next to her.
“You are helping.” He said, voice low. He didn’t look at her, either. “More than most.”
No one who would notice will live. She thought, and did not say. The silence stretched between them like silk.
“My grand-père fought in the same war.” Eugène said. “But he killed people. Hurt them.”
“So you are not like him?”
Eugène huffed. “I think I might be.” He murmured to the snow trodden ground. Renée hummed. She thought of her mother. Of her sister.
“Stay safe, yes?” She told Eugène. “Run between the fire.”
Eugène nodded, eyes on the ground. “You too.” He said. Renée nodded back.
“Il y a un garçon qui n'a pas plus de dix-sept ans à l'intérieur.” Anna told her, later that night. The front of her clothes were stained with blood. Renée wrapped her fingers around her wrist and squeezed gently, just to know she was still there. “J'ai besoin d'aide pour le garder immobile.”
Renée let go of her to look briefly over her shoulder. The boy had gone back to his soldiers on the last van. She hoped he wouldn’t have to come back with another, screaming and bloody and calling him Gene, asking him to please help.
“Chirurgie?” She asked. Anna sighed, nodded to the back. A well versed dance.
“Bras.” Was all she said. Renée scrubbed a hand down her face. It left the coppery-taste of blood and chocolate in her mouth.
“Ma mère aimait danser.” She told Eugène. The surgeon called her down but didn’t need her help for long. She searched through torn up bedsheets and everything else for what the boy could bring back to his soldiers. “Elle a toujours voulu aller à Paris et danser sous ses lumières.”
Eugène hummed. His face was lined with exhaustion. She could see blood under his fingernails when he picked up a roll of fabric she’d torn from a dead boy’s bedsheets. “Si jamais vous voulez visiter Paris aussi,” He said, “Je pourrais venir avec vous.”
Renée nodded to him. She was mostly just tired. She doubted she could ever dance again without feeling it in her bones.
She didn’t hurt. The plywood was like a blanket.
She imagined she could feel her mothers lips press to her hair, her arms holding her. Her warmth.
“Ma petite fille forte.” Her mother whispered. “Viens danser à Paris avec moi.”
When she closed her eyes, she saw the windows.

Nine Books
Thanks for the tag, @cricketnationrise! My methodology for narrowing down my nine favorite books was basically to just list nine books I like a lot, as quickly as possible, while trying not to overthink the whole thing. This is not necessarily my nine absolute favorite books, and it's obviously far from exhaustive when it comes to my favorite books overall. Also, I followed cricket's lead in considering series to count for one slot each. Here goes:
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
Queen's Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner
Boyfriend Material duology by Alexis Hall
Protector of the Small Quartet by Tamora Pierce
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
May the Best Man Win by Z.R. Ellor
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
Tagging @sadkazoosolo, @doggernaut, @jonsaremembers, @polestarneighbor, @newtsoftheworldunite, @khashanakalashtar, and @the-knights-who-say-book, plus whoever feels like playing!

Hello hello! Hope you're well 💜
Popping into your ask for nice ask day to ask you this because tis the season even tho it's still September: what do you think the 126 (plus Carlos and Grace) would dress up for this Halloween? Is there someone who adamantly refuses to put on a costume? Someone who goes all out every year cosplay style? What are your thoughts 🤔
Hi there!
This was hard because I'm not a huge Halloween person myself (I'm more of a Christmas person) but here's what I've come up with:
TK dresses up as Steve Irwin and proceeds to make Carlos take dozens of photos of him and Lou II.
Carlos strikes me as a big bookworm so I can see him dressing up as Hercule Poirot. He looks ridiculous with the fake mustache and TK can't wait to kiss him so hard it falls off.
Judd and Grace have been watching Frozen on repeat so of course they're Kristoff and Anna respectively and Charlie is Olaf.
Mateo and Nancy are doing a couples costume and have made the executive decision to be the Mayor of Townsville and Miss Bellum. Mateo goes the campy route, Nancy goes the sexy route and he can't keep his eyes off of her the whole evening.
Marjan would be Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet and would look ridiculously good and make everyone else look they didn't try at all. I like to think she'd wear a brown hijab under her hat, her way of doing Captain Amelia's hair.
I feel like Paul would do something very punny and dress up like a french kiss, and when you see him, he's a mime holding a fake baguette and has his make up done like the way the band KISS does their make up.
Tommy would be Jessica Pearson from Suits. Everyone's been telling her that she looks just like the actress who plays her, but Tommy doesn't see it. (I also just want an excuse to see Jessica Pearson again.)
Owen definitely would go as Don Draper from Mad Men and would subject everyone to this new voice he's putting on. Everyone would say he's just a guy wearing a suit and would then be subjected to why Don Draper is not just a "guy wearing a suit".

fellow period-piece swooners, I have a movie rec for you and I am downright flexing my hand about it. and I am sorry, so sorry, that you cannot watch it right now- because I attended the world premiere at TIFF last night and apparently it's still seeking distribution which means unfortunately there are no gifs yet for me to reblog - but this is your notice to keep a weather eye:
the movie is the Widow Clicquot. the plot is champagne!
...not the celebratory spritz and spray of it all, but the dedication and innovation and passion and knowing-your-taste-and-insisting-on-it of getting bubbles to be just the right size and fuck Napoleon's embargos actually...
also, the people expressing opinions about Napoleon are a British cast pretending to be French - which I guess appeals to the piece of my soul that is Les Mis.
it's beautifully filmed in a way I specifically associate with Pride & Prejudice 2005... which makes sense given the director, Thomas Napper, directed the second camera unit on P&P 2005 & Atonement & Anna Karenina & etc. Joe Wright, who directed those, is a producer here (and was on stage last night & I had no idea who he was whoops).
there's a scene of exploding champagne bottles that may haunt me forever the way the floating cotton in North & South 2004 does. that & the vines.
to quote Taylor Swift, "it's giving cinematography."
the Widow Clicquot herself is played by Haley Bennett (who has been in many things I haven't seen...yes I had to imdb Haley while sitting in the row right behind her but) who I have seen before in Music & Lyrics! As Cora Corman! "Way Back Into Love"! & "Buddha's Delight"- I believe in karma (la, la, la)
anyway she's great in this - the Q&A host after called her performance "transcendant", not wrong - she had a SAG-AFTRA waiver to be there, and thankfully because this was very apparently a passion project throw-everything-you-are-into-it role for her. And her post-movie quotes speaking both about the character's passion and her own- "do something that makes you feel like a goddess!"; "do what you love and let it kill you"- made me a fan.
the Widow Clicquot's dead husband? Tom Sturridge, The Sandman himself and playing just as much a dream as Dream (note: I do not promise "dreamy" I promise "dream" which can also have adjectives like "wild" and "fever" applied). You need a good voice when leaning on some voiceover from letters/memory for a character; he sure has it.
but. Sam Riley. aka Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and Maleficent's hot raven (and looks even better in this imho)- his character is Louis Bohne, Veuve Clicquot's wine merchant, and as much as the Widow herself, his character made me go, "I need to read the book" to learn how much was history v fiction there.
the character dynamic was: damn, of course you're cool with your husband's libertine BFF/possibly-lover, you're secure and he's such fun company.... your husband's tragically gone but his friend helps you out & appreciates your true love of the vineyard without overstepping... well. get yourself a friend you can both giggle with over how hot the new foreman is (Leo Suter filling a historical-eye-candy role) ... AND hook up with yourself. you go girl, & bless your hot bisexual heart fictionalized Louis Bohne.
(hottest kiss in cinema off the top of my head is always the Timothy Olyphant & Jennifer Garner first kiss in Catch & Release. But some scenes here flirt with that level, & it was the Widow/Louis scenes for me).
the sound alone made this one worth seeing in theaters; sounds were so well used (maybe when a movie is so much about taste, & you can't convey taste through a screen, you double down on the senses you can) and it was scored by Bryce Dessner from The National (whose brother has been collaborating on Taylor Swift's recent best tunes)-
the Widow's name is Barbe-Nicole and not to make a Champagne Barbie reference but this hit in the spot Barbie also reached for, in a subtle way, with the effortlessly close relationship she has with her maid (Lizzie from Peaky Blinders! thanks imdb, knew I knew that face) and the woman in a man's world of it all - obviously one who created a successful dynasty of champagne and how did I never know how instrumental women have been in creating champagne as we know it, about to jump down a historical rabbit hole here-
+ also. grief. "you don't understand. he wasn't just someone's first love". an early line + the one that stuck with me.
anyway. not to say I think it's a perfect movie (there were a few "wait I need more information" beats that left me feeling like I *need* and not just want to read the book)... and it didn't make me think "this better be up for an Oscar" (One Life, with Johnny Flynn & Anthony Hopkins which I saw Saturday: made me cry & should be)- though I think it could be for sound!... and I don't know if I'd say it's the movie I enjoyed the most (Flora & Son, out Sept 29) or learned the most from (Paul Simon documentary, all 209 minutes of it, probably takes that of the 4 films I saw)-
But it's the one I'm writing this post about. & I'm going to get the book. It made me want a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne. & to go to the champagne region. & to see gifs of it on my dash, immediately. & I would read fan fic if there was some- it built the characters and its own movie world enough for that, with enough space left to wonder- and when a movie can do that, it thrills me.
anyway Tumblr, or at least the side I always land on. I think you'd like it. I think it's your kind of movie too. and it's filled with a lot of love from people who clearly loved making it. here's to independent productions and the unions fighting for fair deals to make a living doing what they love, here's to feeling like a goddess, here's to gorgeous period pieces and gif makers of scenes to come, here's to the author in the audience who got to see her book on screen- and the movie star who got it made and all of us still working on making our own art into something that can be seen someday. Here's to the passion of creativity in whatever shape it takes, pour the champagne 🍾🥂

Any book recs? I’m struggling to find new books so I’ve just been rereading all my favourites over the past few months.
I like YA fantasy, romance, sci-fi and dystopian, but I’m open to anything. My all time favourite series is the Lunar Chronicles. But I also adore novels such as the Selection, Partials, Anna and the French Kiss etc. 😊  And ofc Percy Jackson ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

omg omg 1 2 3 4 7 and 18 for book asks (I got excited sue me)
1. book you’ve reread the most times? it's gotta be the truth about forever by sarah dessen. not for any particularly deep reason, just it was one of three books that i imprinted on when i was maybe 13ish, and that ended up coinciding with some of the most anxious and insomnia-ridden years of my life thus far, and i'd sit up all night riding waves of panic and re-reading it, because, idk, it was comforting and predictable and i liked it. <3
2. top 5 books of all time? already answered so i'm gonna do the next 5 that pop into my brain. there can never be too many top books.
braiding sweetgrass (i haven't FINISHED it but i just. can tell)
the raven cycle (the entire series)(is this cheating? maybe. whatever.)
they call me güero
the brown sisters series
....anna and the french kiss...... (look u guys can drag me for this but. baby me thought this shit was peak romance and i do re-read for the nostalgia occasionally. i also do sometimes still repeat the name etienne to myself. it's FUN TO SAY. and the group dynamics were top tier i wanted a friend group just like this sorry not sorry.)
3. what is your favorite genre? i WILL bitch about amatonormativity all day but i fucking love a well-written contemporary romance (although i generally stick with YA or new-ish adult), ESPECIALLY IF IT'S QUEER. what can i say. i contain multitudes. and then i also love middle-grade contemporary with hints of mystery and adventure.
4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse? i primarily browse YA but i occasionally drift into poetry or cookbooks. <3 (i can't justify purchasing cookbooks since i hardly ever actually use them but GOD i love the pictures.)
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading? just answered this one and the answer hasn't necessarily changed but! i'm gonna have to give a shoutout to my underfunded hometown library bc those tattered copies of the saddle club really gripped me and wouldn't let me go. also. did anyone else read sammy keyes? singlehandedly destroyed my ability to spell the word "keys" for years but goddamn it was worth it.
18. do you like historical books? which time period? i won't seek them out but i wouldn't turn them down either, which means i also don't have a time period in mind. like, i'll kinda read anything as long as it scratches my brain in the right way.

Two by Jacques Feyder
Tumblr media
Cécile Guyon, Françoise Rosay, and Jean Forest in Gribiche (Jacques Feyder, 1926)
Tumblr media
Carnival in Flanders (Jacques Feyder, 1935)
Belgian-born director Jacques Feyder established his career in France during the silent era, and went to work for MGM in Hollywood in 1929 to direct Greta Garbo in her last silent movie, The Kiss. But Hollywood was more interested in having him direct foreign-language versions of movies after talkies came in: Before dubbing became a common practice, films were often made in two versions, one in English for the American and British markets, others in various languages for overseas audiences. So Feyder was tasked with making a German-language version of Garbo's first talkie, Anna Christie (1931), though he also made two movies starring Ramon Novarro, Daybreak (1931) and Son of India (1931). Disillusionment with Hollywood sent him back to France, where he made his most famous film, Carnival in Flanders, in 1935. The rise of the Nazis, who banned that film after they invaded France in 1940, caused Feyder and his wife, Françoise Rosay, who starred in many of his movies, to move to Switzerland, where his career stalled and he died, only 62, in 1948. After the New Wave filmmakers began to dominate French film, Feyder's reputation began to wane: François Truffaut said of Carnival in Flanders that it represented a tendency to make everything "pleasant and perfect," As a result, David Thomson has said, "Feyder may be unfairly neglected today just as once he was injudiciously acclaimed."
Gribiche (Jacques Feyder, 1926)
Cast: Jean Forest, Rolla Norman, Françoise Rosay, Cécile Guyon, Alice Tissot. Screenplay: Jacques Feyder, based on a novel by Frédéric Boutet. Cinematography:  Maurice Desfassiaux, Maurice Forster. Production design: Lazare Meerson.
The young actor Jean Forest had been discovered by Feyder and his wife, Françoise Rosay, and he starred in three films for the director, of which this was the last. It's a peculiar fable about charity. Forest plays Antoine Belot, nicknamed "Gribiche," who sees a rich woman, Edith Maranet (Rosay), drop her purse in a department store and returns it to her, spurning a reward. Edith is a do-gooder full of theories about "social hygiene." Impressed by the boy's honesty, Edith goes to his home, a small flat above some shops, where he lives with his widowed mother, Anna (Cécile Guyon), and proposes that she adopt Gribiche and educate him. Anna is reluctant to give up the boy, but Gribiche, knowing that Anna is being courted by Phillippe Gavary (Rolla Norman), and believing that he stands in the way of their marriage, agrees to the deal. When her rich friends ask about how she found Gribiche, Edith tells increasingly sentimental and self-serving stories -- dramatized by Feyder -- about the poverty in which she found him and his mother. But the boy is unhappy with the cold, sterile environment of Edith's mansion and the regimented approach to his education, and on Bastille Day, when the common folk of Paris are celebrating in what Edith regards as "unhygienic" ways, he finds his way back to his mother's home. Edith is furious, but eventually is persuaded to see reality and agrees to let him live with Anna and Phillippe, who have married, while she pays for his education. The whole thing is implausible, but the performances of Forest and Rosay, and especially the production design by Lazare Meerson, make it watchable and occasionally quite charming. Carnival in Flanders (Jacques Feyder, 1935)
Cast: Françoise Rosay, André Alerme, Jean Murat, Louis Jouvet, Micheline Chierel, Lyne Clevers Bernard Lancret. Screenplay: Bernard Zimmer, Jacques Feyder, based on a story by Charles Spaak. Cinematography: Harry Stradling Sr. Production design: Lazare Meerson. Film editing: Jacques Brillouin. Music: Louis Beydts.
Feyder's best-known film is something of a feminist fable, a kind of inversion of Lysistrata, in which the women of Boom, a village in 17th century Flanders that is occupied by the Spanish save the town from the pillage and plunder that the men of the village expect. Françoise Rosay plays the wife of the burgomaster (André Alerme), who holes up in his house, pretending to have died. The other officials of the town likewise sequester themselves. But the merry wives of Boom decide to wine, dine, and otherwise entertain the occupying Spaniards. It's all quite saucily entertaining, though undercut by a tiresome subplot (suspiciously reminiscent of that in Shakespeare's own play about merry wives) involving the burgomaster's daughter (Micheline Chierel) and her love for the young painter Julien Brueghel (Bernard Lancret), of whom the burgomaster disapproves. Again, Rosay's performance is a standout, as is Lazare Meerson's design: The village, with its evocation of the paintings of the Flemish masters, was created in a Paris suburb, with meticulous attention to detail, including the men's unflattering period costumes, designed by Georges K. Benda. The cinematography is by the American Harry Stradling Sr., who built his reputation in Europe before returning to Hollywood.
