How do I ask for a raise and also how much of a raise is appropriate
#I make $14 an hour but minimum wage is $7.25 but I DO live in one of the poorest areas of America#however other similar jobs in my area pay $15-25#I’ve been here almost a year#also I’ve been doing so much shit outside of my job duties. I’m not even talking about learning the other departments or helping them.#I mean like. floor machine repair. training new employees. training the goddamn reps for shits sake#I think a $1.00 isn’t too much to ask for and honestly I think $2.00 isn’t either. but#found out that a co worker who’s been at my job for SEVEN years and knows the goddamn store by HEART is only making 50c more than me#I guess they are a cashier and I’m a warehouse worker so for some reason it’s fair#I would give them a 25% raise at LEAST if I was in charge though#idk :/ I don’t wanna piss of my bosses lol. I have been doing badly about being on time lately too#but that’s cos health stuff so it’s not like I DONT care#and it doesn’t negate the fact that i do so much more than I’m supposed to do for $14 an hour#so far my strategy is: stop doing all the little stressful shit that no one notices anyways#it’s been so fun to do that for the past few days#I just watch a problem grow and grow and grow until it’s a big problem and then management deals with it#which I hate because management is also underpaid. but. so am I. and it’s not my job to take care of another department’s hazardous waste.#or to answer the phone for other departments. or to train reps. or care about the floor machine getting clogged.#i ignore problems now and then they get too big to ignore#and they take WAY more effort to fix than if I had taken care of them to start with#but goddamn we are so understaffed. I’m already being 2-3 people. I can’t be a manager too. as much as I’ve been trying to help. I gotta#stop because no one notices and I don’t get paid for that shit#sorenhoots#but I wanna take care of the stuff 3: I just need to get paid for it

Hi hello since the states are gonna get blasted with cold soon I figured I'd shave some Helpful Cold Survival Advice I've absorbed as someone who lives in an area that hits -50C/-58F temperatures periodically
-Starting with a somewhat obvious one, but HOLY SHIT DO NOT BRING BARBECUES, GENERATORS, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF OUTDOOR HEAT SOURCE INSIDE FOR WARMTH. CO poisoning WILL kill you if you don't accidentally start a fire in the process.
-If you wanna stay in your car and turn the heat up for warmth DO NOT do it in the garage. Again. CO poisoning.
-You can turn up your stove/ oven and crack the oven door open in an emergency if you have zero other heat sources available, but only if its electric (Gas stoves will generate carbon mono...yeah you get it already), and even then its going to be much less energy efficient than a normal space heater, and you're gonna want to stay nearby while it's on to make sure you don't start a fire.
-Don't plug a space heater into a power bar or extention cord unless you're 100% sure it has a high quality cord. They need an absurd amount of power to run, and most extention cords in particular aren't insulated enough to handle those levels of power without becoming a fire hazard. And for the love of God, don't run multiple heaters on one power bar.
-Candles don't actually do much to generate heat unless you're ina very small area, but they ARE an excellent light source should power go out
- tragically, the best way to keep warm in the absence of home heating is through boring ol layering, especially on your feet and head. Avoid jeans, as they're somehow terrible at heat retention despite how thick they are, and throw on a pair of long underwear/leggings if you have some. Also feel free to pile as many blankets as you own on top of yourself, you deserve it.
-Youre gonna want to stay well fed, too. Keeping your body temperature up in the cold is pretty calorically demanding, AND the digestive process tends to heat your body up as well. Its a win/win.
-Also unfortunate: another excellent way to stay warm is through your enemy and mine, physical activity. Every half hour or so, pace around your living space to get the ol blood pumping a bit.
-If you get wet outside while it's substantially cold out, get inside as soon as possible bc that WILL suck the heat from your body. This goes for sweat too, so layer responsibly if you're out shoveling
-Electric blankets are a scam, don't buy them.
-heating pads and heated mattress covers are less of a scam, but don't fall asleep with them on bc once again, fire hazard.
-If you have any faucets in your house that don't see a lot of use/you live somewhere that doesn't usually see cold weather, keep all your faucets on just a bit so your pipes don't freeze and/or explode. This WILL cost thousands of dollars to fix.
-Likewise, if you're traveling for the holidays see if you can have someone come by to turn the faucets on every day or two so you don't come home to find your house sunk into the ground
-ALSO if you're traveling and think "hm, I think I'll turn off the heat while I'm out to save some money that is the devil speaking, do NOT listen. (Heating helps keep the pipes warm and unfrozen)
-Fill your bathtub up with water and/or stock up on bottled water if you're gonna be getting unusually cold temperatures in case your pipes DO freeze, since you're probably not gonna want to hit up the store should this occur
-Stay off the roads if you can help it. Turbocold weather makes cars periodically fail to start, and also the second snow touches the ground people somehow forget how to drive.
-IMO If it's below -38C before windchill, you have a substantial commute, and you have any PTO/can afford to miss a shift at work, don't bother going in. Just lie and say your car wouldn't start.
-If you absolutely need to go to work/go out for whatever reason, take public transit if possible. If thats not possible, keep some blankets, food, candles, and a lighter in your car in case the battery dies on the road so you can stay toasty and Alive until help arrives.
Probably gonna add more as I remember it, but thems the basics! Stay warm!

capitalism is truly shit.
this year i bought some gumboots. i live in what is essentially a town on top of a swamp, so boots are important.
they broke.
after SIX months.
those boots cost 30 bucks.
a few months ago i found some old boots in a dumpster. theyre made of water proof leather, have metal spikes for grips, and are decades old. they are in wonderful condition. they will probably last at least another few decades. these are high quality hiking boots. my old boots were absurdly expensive and absolutely shit.
i also have a lot of old clothes i got at secondhand stores. they are high quality fabric with no holes. some of these clothes are from the 50s. thats 70 years old. my modern clothes barely last a year.
not only is the material strong, its also really comfy. my 40s trousers are rough on the outside but have a soft inner layer. even though they are double layered i can wear them in the middle of summer.
it is literally more cost effective and comfortable to dress like Victor Creel from stranger things all the time.
and the sweaters. theyre actually warm. and soft. and they dont shed microplastics everywhere. so its also better for the environment.
i also found a handmade suede jacket. im not sure what animal its from but it might be kangaroo leather. thats one of the best leathers. its soft, almost fluffy on the underside when its suede. its thin but strong.
it cost me ONE dollar. in american dollars that around 50c.
clothes arent made like that anymore. these days we just get paper thin woven plastic shedding microplastics all over the place made by underpaid wage slaves.
capitalism only cares about making money, so only gives us shit thats cheap to make. its ridiculously expensive and has to be replaced often, meaning we spend absurd amounts of money just on clothing. one of my modern shirts cost 30 bucks. i can get quality 90s shirts for around 5 dollars at a second hand store.
this quantity over quality bullshit is a tool of capitalism

Hello! Wanted to ask about Ream. You said that you set your tiers a long time ago, and with current horrors of Patreon and such will you add some tiers to Ream so that once-a-month payers on Patreon could find a tier with same price on Ream and would be comfortable moving? Thanks!
Hi anon!
So this is something I've been thinking over for months actually.
At first I was like 'yes of course' and then a very good friend sat me down and I realised that...actually maybe not.
Here's the reason (tl;dr I haven't increased my income in 10 years and actually cost of living has gone up in that period of time and I need to eat too):
Those prices haven't changed in a decade. I haven't had a 'wage increase' on that front in a decade. You can't change tier prices once they're made, they're locked in place forever (until you delete or retire the tier).
Not only that, but I offer about...3-4 times as much as I used to.
In the end, I increased my prices on Ream (a semi-midway point between charging once and charging twice) because of inflation and cost of living.
I know that everyone reading this is impacted by that too, and that might mean some people can't subscribe to Ream (or can't subscribe on the same tier) for a few dollars more because it's just too much, but I am now drastically undercharging compared to so many other authors on the market who do subscription.
Where I charge $5 USD for base early access, most charge between $10-20. I settled on $9 USD on Ream. Some authors have tiers of like... $100-200 per month, and I couldn't ever dream of doing that. But this is my career, and it's the money I use to pay for food, bills, etc. I don't make a minimum wage with the hours I work, and the idea of just hitting the country's average yearly income feels like a distant dream.
Granted, some of that could be down to my marketing options (like maybe I'd make more if I took all my writing offline and made people pay for all of it, but I don't want to do that, I like the model I do now, but it's dependent on those who can comfortably afford to support it... supporting it - if they want!!)
When I set up Ream, and set up the new tiers, I set them up with how much the cost of living has changed in a decade and how much other authors are charging on the whole. And I thought about it and came to the conclusion that I have 10 years behind me, I'm offering 3-4 times as much as I used to and am only charging about 50-80% more, cost of living has changed, and since I don't rely on book royalties (I love Perth Shifters but royalties work out to about $30 every 3 months), subscription is where the changes need to happen.
I'm not super happy about that, like, obviously I don't want people to feel hard done by, but all I can do is remind myself - and remind you and others anon - that unlike 99% of other authors in subscription, almost all of my writing becomes freely available if folks just have patience. That's something I know for a fact some other authors think I'm stupid for doing, lol, but I prefer doing it this way because it feels fandom and community friendly in a different way.
So even if folks can't afford a few dollars more to subscribe on Ream (you can become a follower though and still get email notifications - no one needs to pay to follow me on Ream, that's completely free), you just need to be patient. Like I get it, that few dollars is the difference sometimes between a bill getting paid and not getting paid - I feel and live that myself. I'm so angry at the Patreon situation, because honestly, if my account goes tomorrow and I get banned there, I may have to quit writing if Ream can't pick up fast. I cannot work for like... 50c an hour.
And I need to make some posts about this on Patreon obviously, but the stress of it is so overwhelming, because it's like staring down the barrel of a potentially career-ending policy decision.
Anyway, re: tier prices, the one exception to not changing / offering half-priced or lower-priced tiers is the merch tier, where I have thought about approaching Ream with getting an ongoing discount code, since I calculated sending merch on the merch tier at the $25 USD rate with the awareness that some people would be paying twice as much, and the leap there is the most significant one. That's a place where I'm willing to compromise if I can work that out, and Ream is typically very accommodating.
Folks who can't afford it still get access to nearly everything eventually - and not in a year, but like...in a few months, or even just a handful of weeks.
Folks who don't think my writing is worth a modest increase can choose to bow out whenever they want (or sign up to a lower tier and still get access to nearly everything eventually)!
I am grateful to any and all folks who choose to support my writing whether it's financially or not, and I do get that like, sometimes the budget just does not allow for an increase of any kind. Or maybe you only signed up this year and don't believe in paying more than what you do already, and so it doesn't matter that my prices have been the same for a decade. Most artists / creators / writers have put up their book prices / art prices / etc. Ream is the first time I've ever done it.
Anyway on the matter of the merch tier, I'll talk to Ream about organising some kind of perma-discount and offering it specifically in that tier. For the rest, I'll keep thinking about it, and maybe talk to Ream to see what they suggest too.
fdsalkfkdjsa
Anyway, I'm just... I am sorry anon, in a perfect world, I would have been able to incrementally increase my tier prices all along with a lot of warning in advance. And I'm also like, extremely and intensely hoping that I can just stay on Patreon, but that seems less and less likely with their new policy changes. I'm not uprooting, I will keep posting on Patreon until the lights metaphorically go out. It's just, they could kick me in an hour and I'd have no recourse and there'd be no point in appealing. Or they could kick me in 5 years, or 10.
In some ways this isn't a problem until Patreon makes it a problem for all of us, but yeah, that's where I'm at. A friend basically reminded me that it's okay for me to value my writing and my 10 years of experience and my track record and my stories a bit more, and I took their advice to heart, and then have felt terribly guilty ever since, lol. I'll keep thinking about my options here, and what I can do, because I obviously don't want to leave a lot of people behind, either.

Hey all you know tuberculosis right? That old timey disease. When was the last time you heard of someone dying from it? What if I told you that 30,000 people died of Tuberculosis LAST WEEK.
Now tuberculosis is curable. A key drug in the treatment of TB is Bedaquiline which Johnson & Johnson owns the patent for. It cost about $1.50 (USD) per pill. It is was created in 2003 and the patent is due to expire this month. After this generic version of the drug can be made lower the cost to 50c per pill. Which is vital in poorer nations as we can see from the comment posted below. HOWEVER in 2007 the filed a secondary patent. Meaning the drug will
To put it simply I am not happy about this. The secondary patent is an addition to the first and does not make major changes to the drug. The need to enforce this patent is purely motivated by greed. Which is not right. Johnson & Johnson is big company so it is hard to avoid but I want it to be know that decisions the company is making is going to have an impact on the world today.
People will get sick and die. It is estimated that if the patent was allowed to expire over 6 million lives would be saved over the next 4 years due to increase access.
So I just ask that you keep this in your minds and spread awareness of this decision made by Johnson & Johnson and if you have the time let them know you are unhappy with this decision.

My friend @eaglehorn has asked me to help her make some already-awesome game pieces even more exciting! We'll be painting this tray of minis together and I figured I'd take the opportunity to post a step-by-step of the process for anybody who wants to personalize their own board game minis for the first time. We'll keep everything beginner-friendly and bring all these models to a tabletop standard with lots of photos along the way. I'll tag all the posts in this series #KP2023SCY to make them easy to find, and I'll create an Index post that links to all of the others when the series concludes. If there's a part of the process you'd like to see specifically, hit me up in the comments and I'll do my best to cover that topic!
Preparing to Paint
Tumblr media
These are from Scythe, and look at all those rivets! These are beautifully sculpted and molded figures with no obvious mold lines, so we can skip the step where we use an old hobby knife or sandpaper to grind away the extra plastic that we don't want.
The packaging also protected them well during shipping, so the deformations are few and slight. We could straighten out any badly bent parts if we needed by applying some heat. I use some hot water - about 50C (100F) is hot enough to soften the plastic but not so hot as to burn the skin. Hold the bent part in the water for 20-30 seconds, then bend it just slightly past where you want it. I find most minis spring back slightly over the first few days after this treatment. You'll need to hold the part in place as it cools, and this bit can be made faster with some cold water if you like.
Next, I give all the figures a bath in cool soapy water followed by a rinse in clean water and a light scrub with some isopropyl alcohol. I use dishwashing soap because it gives a very clean rinse. We're making sure we get any hand oils, dirt, plastic dust, and left over manufacturing residues off of the surface. This helps the paint to stick better and keeps the finished minis looking amazing for much longer.

Over your headcanons about allowance... I have a hard time believing Edd gets real pences every mouth or that he's a penny-pincher. I could see this scenary, but regarding his paperboy chore in Read all About Ed, seems unlikely. And he probably takes part on the scams bc he enjoys having fun with his friends and improving his constructions skills, he don't care about them getting money or not. Also, I believe he don't mind about his parents giving him allowance or not, he just wants affection and attention from them... and about his parents, I believe they just give nickels in very situational moments, when they see him somewhat sad, disappointed and feel the obligation ''do something as parents'' (just like the special lunch in ''Too Smart for his Ed'').
Either way, I feel Edd's ''allowance'' is very situational (hence your books on the disease episode) and otherwise he don't care about money at all.
About Ed case, I also have a hard time believing he gets allowance, due to how neglected he is and how his parents favor Sarah. But there is the question from knowing where he got all his movies and comics... maybe he just got any pennies once a year, in his birthday day, and he will immediately spent on comics and movies (or grave like in All Eds are Off). (I believe Eddy's family is actually just avaricious, and he never gets allowance at all. Greed runs on the family).
well they're headcanons after all so they are by definition not canon. that post wasn't me telling anyone what to believe lol. if you thought that was bad you should hear my other headcanons.
but you make a fair point, maybe edd knew they were gonna have a sale so he asked his parents for money. but he did have 50c in every which way but ed, as a very young child. the newspaper thing, i mean the electron microscope was like $20k so he probably figured he needed to supplement his income if he was going to get it before he turned 25 lmao.
with ed i can see what you mean but he has things he likes, like his comics and his model kits that must come from somewhere. either his parents buy them or he buys them with an allowance. if they're willing to buy him those things, then it's not that crazy to think he'd get an allowance. someone suggested they might be handed down from his father which is possible! but some of them must be current cuz he was able to order those jawbreakers in ed or tails.
eddy's parents (specifically his dad) are undoubtedly greedy but he is spoiled rotten. their spoiling does come in other forms though, outside of money. like not requiring him to do any chores whatsoever. and i like the idea that he pulled a regina george and made them trade him bedrooms so he has the biggest one in the house... but that's besides the point. it's very possible that be doesn't get an allowance, hence the scams. i just put together a silly little backstory that i thought was fun.
it's possible that none of them get allowance. you're allowed to believe whatever you want, i can't stop you. nor would i want to.
one of the great things about the show is how ambiguous a lot of things are, and that continuity is far from its main concern. so we fans can kinda go buck wild.

*No spoilers here*
I finally got to see the last episodes of Disenchantment and oh, boy, was I sad to see the end of it. Not sure how much love this show got, certainly didn't get much promotion as far as I could see, but I loved it and even if the ending wasn't perfect (imo), I was grateful they gave us an extra-long episode to say goodbye.
The show was fun and it had great moments, and I loved that you could spot totally unrelated hilarious posters and signs in the background if you paid enough attention (or simply froze the video and looked for the next crazy sign at the back).
A few examples under the cut (cropped from screencaps of s3, but no spoilers at all)

"How much do you trust wicker?"

"Spit in the face of God"

I know this is a long shot, but I need help.
I’m 22 years old and I live in a rural town of Ohio with an elderly dog that requires special food as he cannot chew and swallow properly-he needs his teeth pulled.
I recently lost my job due to budget cuts. Employers do not want to hire me as I will be finished with schooling in the next three weeks so I will be qualified to work in healthcare and will inevitably quit that job. It is also hard for me to find jobs that would hire me for this small period of time because I have ankylosing spondylitis and cannot do heavy physical work.
I’ve lived on my own for two years and I live in a decently cheap apartment, but I am running out of money to buy food. Because I have a gluten allergy food is incredibly expensive where I live and bread is over $7 for 9 slices.
I only need a small amount of money, literally anything helps-50c will buy me a potato to eat. I will delete this post after I get my first paycheck from my healthcare position.
Thank you for any and all support even if it’s just a share.

Some little old ladies were in who were very angry about a charity shop selling hand knit baby cardigans for €12, when something like €5 would be "much more fair."
Madam. Let's assume that the person who knit them is incredibly fast and finished a full cardigan in 5 hours and used one 100 g ball of acrylic DK for each cardigan, at a cost of €3.25 a ball. Minus the price of materials, you are valuing their labour at less than 50c an hour.
I understand that the cardigans were donated to the charity shop and the knitter isn't getting any money at all for them, but even still, charity shops do often price things to reflect their value, and probable cost first-hand, when they are aware of it (e.g. charging more for second-hand designer clothes than second-hand fast fashion). Basically... you are wrong.
