I think I might be a tsundere for MXTX romances because I keep saying I don't care for them and read her books for everything but the romance, but I'm also weirdly attached to all her canon pairings???
You may be! I have a weird relationship to all of them that basically goes:
Scum Villain: her earliest and IMO least polished work, features both my least favourite and favourite of her canon ships, would not recommend to anyone without a small list of warnings, my absolute favourite of her novels.
Heaven's Official Blessing: I genuinely think this is her best novel, and it features my favourite of her main couples by a significant margin. Takes up comparatively little space in my brain compared to the other two.
MDZS: neither her best work nor my favourite of her couples. I'm completely obsessed.

So I had a really crack short JFMxYZY idea for my MDZS AU set in 'The word is attempt' universe (with minor chengxian). Let's call it The word is...huh?
So basically this au is about the Jiang family working through their issues. I imagine that this becomes a fix-it. 'The word is attempt' is just about the family coming to terms with their faults and resolving to make it better. Both YZY and JFM are schooled by JYL. Anyway so in 'The word is...huh?' the Jiang family has gotten their shit together and are actively working on being better to each other. Since JFM is actually treating JC well now, his jealousy of WWX basically goes away. The insecurity is taking longer but it's healing.
In the original story WWX is, as in canon, a boy but for this crack spin-off sequel thing maybe I'd make wwx into a girl so we'd have fem!wwx who looks like CSSR even more than boy!wwx did.
Now Chengxian happens. I mean it's basically offscreen (or maybe if I'm up to it in another sequel-ish thing..maybe idk) but since JC's issues have been healing he's been a lot more pleasant/fun to be around and fem!wwx likes what she sees. The thing is, JC is also his father's son even though everyone thinks of him as just like his mother. So a wwx who likes what she sees becomes even flirtier than before and well basically seduces poor Jiang -JFM is actually my father- Cheng with all of her teasing and flirting.
They tried to keep it a secret because even though the Jiang parents were getting along better etc they were still afraid of how they'd react, after all Wwx was still a servant's kid and JC was the heir and would usually need to marry within his status etc. So they were pretty scared about being forcibly broken up so they tried their best to keep it a secret.
Unfortunately for them YZY and JFM come home early from a discussion conference and catch them cuddling and staring into each other's eyes all romantically when they went to check on JC that night.
They're all frozen, deer-in-the-headlights style for everyone... until JFM uncharacteristically wails and turns on Madam Yu all tragically.
JFM: My Lady, you never told me you were in love with Cangse Sanren!
YZY:
Tumblr media
JC and WWX:
Tumblr media
YZY: *narrowing her eyes* Jiang Fengmian, how much Lanling wine did you drink!?
JFM: I'm not drunk! I wouldn't have been able to fly home if I was. *pouts* Don't try to change the subject my lady, it's okay. I've figured it out. No wonder you were so mad when you thought WY was mine. CSSR made you fall in love with her, didn't she? Why did you never tell me? 🥺 I wouldn't have judged you.
YZY: *sputters* You..!
She was at a loss for words. How on earth did he come to that conclusion?
JFM: *patting her shoulder consolingly* Well it's okay my lady, she may be gone but we have each other now. Neither of us got to marry her but we have A-Cheng thanks to that. The next generation can do what we couldn't and marry for love.
YZY:
WWX & JC: *gulping cuz he reminded her of their existence*
YZY: Jiang Fengmian...do... do you think I was in love with CSSR bcuz A-Cheng likes WY? 😡
JFM: There's no need to be shy My Lady, it's okay to admit it. A-Cheng is so much like you. No wonder he fell for CSSR's daughter.
YZY: *exasperated* You... JFM... you do remember that he is your son too?
JFM: Of course, I remember the day we made him quite well. 😄 But what does that have to do with anything?
YZY: 😳 (but also 🤦‍♀️)
WWX & JC: *tries to sneak out of the room bcuz it suddenly got real uncomfortable in there*
idk where it goes from here yet but shenanigans and yzy and jfm's rship going from mere getting along to actual romance
----
Actually this concept is still hilarious even if it's not in my AU. Could be a dif AU where WWX & JC are together but this time the family did not have their heart to heart after a scolding from Yanli so YZY and JFM's rship is still contentious and her feelings about WWX have not changed.
JFM&YZY: *catches WWX&JC being intimate*
YZY: *ready to quarrel*
JFM: *fully convinced JC is nothing like him but is like YZY* My Lady, you were in love with CSSR? *surprised pikachu face*
YZY: *disc scratch* w..what?

(in other news check out my au.. currently working on the last chapter :3 )

What keeps stumping me is this: LWJ takes WWX to the Cloud Recesses to protect him from JC, then, when they leave with the arm, he keeps dragging him back when WWX tries to escape to, again, protect him from JC... But then, after the Xinglu Ridge, he lets him go and trusts that WWX will meet him back at the inn. Why? And anyway, what was he planning to do, drag WWX around all his life? He had duties, he couldn't have followed WWX himself to provide protection, so it would have been exactly [1/2]
that — dragging him around or leaving him shielded behind the walls of the Cloud Recesses. In theory, if "MXY" became a Lan disciple, JC couldn't have touched him... But LWJ knew who "MXY" was and that WWX would mostly refuse, like he did multiple times before. It's great that after WWX realizes LWJ doesn't intend to harm or punish him, he goes along willingly — but what if he didn't? What then? JC was still out there, after all. [2/2]
Hi anon,
I think it's a little bit of a stretch to imagine LWJ's plan was to just keep 'dragging' WWX along forever. They arrived in the CR, spent one night there, and the next day LWJ was busy with the arm which was of course a priority. What would have happened if the Lans had been able to suppress the resentful energy of the arm on that day, and LWJ had not felt the responsibility to leave to solve the mystery? It's hard to say. But now that they were in a place that was safe, and that there wouldn't have been another matter that would have taken priority, I don't think it's far fetched to believe that LWJ would have discussed things with WWX or put into place a way to bring him to a safe place outside of the CR if he did not want to stay. Considering his grief over his mother, and her situation, as well as his care for WWX’s welfare, I’m wary to believe his gameplan could ever be just ‘guess I’ll keep WWX in the CR, even if against his will, forever, bc jc is out there’.
I think it's important as well to remember that regardless of LWJ's motives, WWX does not choose to remain with him because of the protection LWJ can provide him, or simply because he suddenly decided to trust him out of a single demonstration of trustworthiness.
Even before they left the CR, WWX's words and actions revealed he was attached to and protective of LWJ--even as a crisis is occurring, his thoughts keep going back to LWJ, and whether he is okay:
When the bell of the watchtower started ringing on its own, it only meant one thing—that an accident happened to the people performing the summoning ritual inside. [...]
Seeing that Lan Wangji did not appear, Wei Wuxian had a foreboding feeling. If Lan Wangji were still in the Cloud Recesses, he would have hurried over immediately, as he heard the alarming chimes of the bell, unless…
Suddenly, the black door burst open with a bang. A white-clothed disciple rushed outside, staggering and stumbling.
[...]
Wei Wuxian grabbed his hand at once, speaking in a low voice, “Which being’s spirit are you summoning? Who else is inside? Where’s Hanguang-jun?!”
It seemed as if the disciple had trouble breathing, “Hanguang-jun told me to run away…”
[...]With the hastily created bamboo flute still by his waist, he went up the stairs in just a few strides. He kicked the door of the mingshi and commanded, “Open!”
WWX is the one who offers to go with LWJ, but of course we know it was because he thought it would be an opportunity to get away.
The few nodded, “Okay! Are you going to travel down the mountain?”
Lan Wangji gave a slight nod. Wei Wuxian had already stealthily shifted behind him, talking to himself in a loud, cheerful way, “Yes, yes, yes, we can finally get off this mountain and elope together!”
[...] Wei Wuxian originally wanted to sneak away during their expedition off the mountain. However, even though he attempted to run away multiple times, it always ended with Lan Wangji carrying him back with one hand holding the back of his collar. He changed his strategy, sticking to Lan Wangji as hard as he could. At night, especially, he would persistently climb into Lan Wangji’s bed, with the intention that Lan Wangji would become disgusted and use his sword to throw him away. Despite this, no matter how hard he messed around, Lan Wangji steadily stood his ground. Whenever Wei Wuxian wriggled into his blankets, he would use a light slap to make Wei Wuxian’s body rigid, and then stuff him into the other set of blankets in a proper position, where he would remain until daylight broke. Wei Wuxian suffered a ton of losses and complaint about his sore body after he woke up. He could not help but think: Now that he grew up, he also became less fun than before. In the past, he would become shy whenever he was teased, not to mention that he did it in quite an amusing way. But now, not only does he remain unmovable no matter what, he even learned how to counterattack. How can this be?!
However, in the same chapter, as they have spent more time together, WWX starts hating the idea of being separated from LWJ, although he cannot yet put into words why he feels this way:
After walking for some distance, Wei Wuxian unintentionally turned around and looked. Lan Wangji was behind him, still standing at the same place, staring toward his direction.
Wei Wuxian could not help but slow his footsteps.
He could not tell why, but he vaguely felt that he should not walk so fast, should not be leaving Lan Wangji behind like this.
We can also to a degree concur that WWX already feels safe enough around LWJ to seek him as a source of safety and comfort when faced with a dog, which happens a lot during the Xinglu Ridge arc, to the point that he unconsciously calls for him when JC sics Fairy on him while LWJ is away. WWX is also protective of LWJ in his own way even at that point:
Wei Wuxian immediately understood whose name he had unconsciously called out.
“It really is quite curious how far he went to protect you,” Jiang Cheng smiled menacingly, “back on Dafan Mountain.”
A moment later, he corrected himself, “No. You weren’t necessarily the one whom Lan Wangji was protecting. After all, the GusuLan Sect couldn’t have forgotten what you did with that loyal dog of yours. How could someone so celebrated for his righteousness tolerate the likes of you? Maybe he’s familiar with this body that you stole instead.”
His words were cruel and sinister. Every sentence seemed well-meaning on the surface, but was actually derogatory. Wei Wuxian could not bear with it any longer.
“Watch your language.”
“I’ve never cared for such things, don’t you remember?” Jiang Cheng responded,
“Oh, right.” Wei Wuxian mocked.
Although WWX tells LWJ that he would meet him back after they separated, he could have easily chosen not to do it. After all, compared to all the tricks he tried to flee before, it would have been nothing to go back on this 'promise'. He was in a forest, at night, where no one but JL knew he was. He could have left at any time. And when LWJ left, he knew this--that WWX would potentially not come back, hence why his expression is so shaken after having waited hours for WWX to return (now we can wonder how long he would have stayed on that bridge, waiting, hoping). But, again, solving the mystery of the arm took priority over ensuring WWX's safety (and, considering WWX managed to be discovered and taken by JC during these few hours, it's not like his fears were unfounded).
While WWX seems to realise that LWJ is on his side, there is no big moment of thinking "he doesn't want to punish/harm me". Likewise, there is no considerations of how JC could be looking for him after his escape and the dangers inherent in that. It seems almost like another unconscious decision.
He had always thought that Jiang Cheng would be on his side, and Lan Wangji on the side opposite to him. He could never have imagined that things would turn out so differently.
Wei Wuxian walked toward the rendezvous point where he and Lan Wangji were supposed to meet. Nobody walked among the sparse lights that flickered in the night. Without having to look around, a white-robed figure stood at the end of the street, standing motionless with his head hung low.
In conclusion, WWX would have never stayed alongside LWJ (or anyone else for that matter) simply for protection. As well, it is extremely unlikely that LWJ's thought process at this point of the narrative was 'I'll just drag WWX along for the rest of our lives''--but that the arm took priority over resolving the conundrum around WWX's safety, and that indeed, when the situation presented itself, he put first what I'll call his night hunting duties for a lack of a better term while taking the risk that WWX would decide to leave on his own. Is it the most 'healthy' way of approaching the situation? Honestly, I don't care. Instead I think it’s much more important to wonder: is it coherent with the characterisation, the characters' motivations and the unfolding of the plot?

The Untamed...
This is all based heavily upon the live action drama (spoilers). It’s where I draw up most of my thoughts but there a some novelization things I learned happen differently...
If you get through this, you’re awesome:
There’s always one thing in the live action I’ve wondered about the last battle. Why the fuck is everyone so obsessed with the Yin Iron/Stygian Tiger Amulet? My theory is that Jin GuangYao was spreading resentment somehow? Even in the early stages before he acquired a piece of the refined Yin Iron, because at first he was using an unrefined piece that Xue Yang had right, then they somehow refined it? Something he couldn’t control, well, because his temperament was already starkly different because of how he emotionally handled his traumatic experiences and honestly I think the Stygian Tiger Amulet responded to one true master. Sure, they had enough power to craft a second flute and play it , but Jin GuangYao also learned to manipulate the Lan Clan’s music..but why in the battle did everyone seem so obsessed with the Yin Iron? Was it the effect from the second flute? Not Wei Ying’s doing, obviously. The second flute not only created puppets but it too harmed everyone else’s resolve, amplifying the resentment? They all wanted a piece of it and then since WY is out in the open doing his thing he’s to blame?? I know the battles happen differently in the novel, so I learned from a couple review videos on Youtube. Something about it being only one battle. Lan Zhan gets punished for making a stand against 33 masters of his clan at the Burial Mounds. He is then grounded at Cloud Recesses by his Uncle, whipped 33 times and then while unable to do anything LZ hears about a battle led by Jiang Cheng with confirmation of Wei Ying’s death. No cliff scene, I think? Novel LZ was not there when Wei Ying died. He didn’t catch him. He didn’t see him fall from a cliff. He was left feeling helpless and probably even angrier he couldn’t be there to save him...
My theory as to why everyone is so obsessed with the Yin Iron? Everyone has a weak resolve and it was THEIR TEMPERAMENT being damaged. Somehow I think even Jiang Yanli was unaffected, after all she bounced back when she touched the flute; though I don’t think the spirits intention was to harm her, because Master would not like that...She also knew what was happening to him long before everyone else. Also, the Wen Clan must have mighty resolve [especially Wen Ning who ends up resolving his demonic cultivation/possession but yes he still loses himself] given the fact they’ve been around Wei Ying’s “dangerous practices” for how long? Jiang Cheng remained steady enough to not succumb and in turn that strength was passed onto his cultivators (also in the last battle Wei Ying was choosing to protect his brother and the Jiang Clan). Obviously, we know where the Lan Clan stands. They have the strongest resolve (maybe not all of them) against the effects of the Yin Iron given their disciplines and techniques. One of those calming techniques Wei Ying admitted using himself for three months when he refined the Yin Iron.
Want to know something else that always bothered me? In the end, when everything is coming down around Jin GuangYao? Well, we hear that he trapped Zewua Jun and temporarily drained him of spiritual core...then he shows up and strangles Wei Ying. Drama drama drama, LZ buckles up his core and then somehow the dumb ass lets LZ keep the sword? Huh. Sorry, if I were this villain, swords go bye bye. Then as we near the end of this shitshow… he fights with Jiang Cheng where honestly Jin GuangYao must’ve been shaking, because at first JC was kicking his ass. But he doesn’t and somehow we’ve come to this point where Mister Silly Hat decides to tie up people’s hands. Why the fuck you tie up Wei Ying’s hands? You said yourself in the beginning, “don't think about whistling.” Sooo much pride, right? Thinking he can still win? ME? If it were me. I’d tie up LZ’s hands...you think he won’t use that sword anyway? Sure, it’d probably be heavy as fuck (something I heard explained in the novel, Bichen is apparently heavy) but he’d do it. Didn’t he do it once because a stupid Su She unsheathed his sword? Okay, so I tie LZ’s hands and then I’d probably be the sneaky bitch who tells him to put the Silence Spell on Wei Ying, then for added measure tape Wei Ying’s mouth shut. His literal fighting method is his mouth, the fuck Jin GuangYao worried about his hands for? Also, Mister Silly Hat didn’t think that Zewua Jun would restore spiritual core so quickly? Did LZ too? Maybe not fully, but he was sure up and about, wielding Bichen strong enough to chop off the dude’s fucking arm (aka you think the buckle up core spell lasted that long? Hence, why the fuck didn’t you take his sword?)  Maybe everything was too heavily scripted in the end? If you catch my drift...so semantics? It’s just the details always bothered me because I keep thinking, Mister Silly Hat you’re setting yourself up for failure. Also, there’s the fact that NH made this into a trap but no one knows that and Mister Silly Hat is in all truthfulness fumbling. Also, the Netflix translation when they discover that Jin GuangYao broke into the Forbidden Chamber of the library to steal that piece of music...it translates Wei Ying saying something like, “he tore out this page to cover his tracks. But he has awfully good memory…” Why the fuq he tear out the page if the one thing he’s admired for is his apparently, in modern terms, his EIDETIC memory (photographic memory)? Wouldn’t it be better to just leave it there? They solved the mystery anyway through Wei Ying’s empathy with Blade Master so page or no page, what’s the point? Except to drive home that Zewua Jun is feeling very used and misguided...
Can I make this post longer and add in a small headcanon that no one can pry from me? That DOG was Jing GuangYao’s undoing. Almost ruined NH’s secret evil plans too (but it’s interesting how Fairy seemed keen on destroying Jin GuangYao’s intentions, but no warning about NH? Or was the warning at the Nie Clan’s burial grounds because it couldn’t enter to save JinLing?) But do you know why I think the dog was his undoing? The dog was gifted to JinLing, but who do I think also helped take care of it? Jiang Cheng. The name, right? Fairy. Truthfully, I think that wonder dog was very loyal to JC and it’s protectiveness of JinLing came from direct order of him. The dog did sorta listen to JinLing’s commands but if you notice in the end the dog just runs off towards danger and JL is chasing it, trying to command it back but it doesn’t ever work. Hell, if with one look LZ is able to tell the dog to eff off, did JL ever have control or was it him wandering into trouble then the dog being ordered by JC to follow? So in the end, JL is apprehended and of course the only place for the dog to run is back to JC. Before the end, what gets me is that this supposedly vicious wonder dog that attacked Su She wasn’t even baring its teeth when it chased after Mo/Wwx..when Fairy encountered him again, the dog simply laid down and barked at him to “out” his presence, but why not attack [Fairy never found this person dangerous unlike Su She who it relentlessly attacked]? NOT UNTIL JC figured out his true identity did Fairy become vicious towards WWX. Assuming the wonder dog is only mimicking JC’s anger because it senses a master is displeased with this particular person like a loyal protective pet. Incidentally, Jin GuangYao gifted something, in hopes, he could control the kid, but little did he know that gift also became too loyal to the other Uncle and in the end after receiving nasty information from the two women and now Fairy comes running back without JinLing, relentlessly barking at him, probably even nipping at his robes to drag him where he wants, you bet Jiang Cheng is coming in hot.
I would not care so much for this dog if it wasn’t for the fact that Jiang Cheng once had an obsession with dogs and I think he fell head over heels and took advantage of what he didn’t get to keep as a kid...I have a lot of JC feels the more I re-watch. Insert request: Still want that Jiang Cheng focused video to the song Believer by Imagine Dragons!! And I’ll end this post here by saying you’re amazing if you made it to the last sentence!!
