The Hug

Blades of grass tickled her legs. She closed her eyes and breathed in the summer air and the whisper of leaves. A tentative nudge against her thigh forced a sidelong glance at the culprit. She sighed and flopped to the ground, hooking her hands behind her head as she watched the ball of darkness squirm under her gaze.

He retreated and compressed himself against a tree. She smiled at him, enjoying his bashfulness.

The silence was deafening, but she’d be damned if she broke it first.

She crossed a leg over the other and enjoyed the sun on her face. It has been such a long time since she could enjoy her idleness.

“You didn’t need to be so…thorough, you know,” a sonorous voice bounced around her.

She smiled. “Of course, I did. He besmirched your honor!” She sat up and held her hand expectantly.

The orb of darkness quivered with wisps reaching towards her before it shook and retreated once more.

She sighed. “No one shall insult you in my presence, alright? You are a delight, and everyone should treat you as such!” She arched an eyebrow. “Now come here, sir. My arms are getting tired.”

The pool of night wiggled in glee and bounced toward her. “If you insist,” the velvet soft voice echoed before she wrapped her arms around darkness. It purred with contentment and everything was right in their corner of the world. Just for a moment.

It's totally normal and valid to be cursing out your best friend at 12:30am for writing something so beautiful and aching and angsty, even though you've read it too many times to count over the 7 years since she wrote it, especially when you pulled up the story specifically because you wanted someone angsty and painful.
