Fun fan challenge: redesign Asra keeping base concepts in mind like character archetype and general backstory, but like with consideration and understanding of how the depiction will make Muslim fans feel. No you can't please everyone that's why I suppose hopefully said Muslim fans would be able to contribute multiple designs or viewpoints or like collaborations for non artists teaming up to create a design maybe since there are only so many fan artist and even fewer who will have any interest in the design aspect of a character.
Is there a way to make it work or is the concept flawed at the core due to magic? The character trait of eating weird things comes from a history of starvation and desperate, how can this be expressed without having him explicitly eating the wrong foods? A habit of very small portions? Food hoarding? Perhaps binging habits born out of a "eat it before they take it away mentality" have his favourite food be something appropriate to eat but like really cheap. Like the equivalent to happy toast or something equally heart destroying. Or the only dish he remembers clearly from when his parents were there. There are surely ways to express most of Asra's key features respectfully, taking liberties only in like... it's a fantasy alternate universe where the concept of magic is fundamentally different and with proper consideration for how said different magic and world history would effect or change cultural perspective. But that is some sensitive fine-tuning that I am not capable of understanding with the proper degree of nuance to make it compelling or accurate. Like what does the existence of the arcana mean in respect to other religions? Was Asra poached by the magician? Man that's fucked up. Idk, it's just like the fans are fans because there's something in the game they like. Can it be improved with the inclusion of Muslim coding at least and the core concept involving magic and the arcana and stuff. Cause I dont think the dev's are gonna invest enough money into fixing things so much. At this point fans are gonna have to make content to support each other. And I think it would be really great to hear opinions on how to adapt things not from a "what's easiest to fix" but from like "what is flawed in this concept, and then also the execution of this concept"

How VR porn can change the way we masturbate for the better
Tumblr media
May is National Masturbation Month, and we're celebrating with Feeling Yourself, a series exploring the finer points of self-pleasure.
When VR was tech's pie in the sky years ago, people's minds ran wild imagining all the new ways it could get us off. But then VR actually came, and largely, there wasn't all that much to cum about.
Instead of opening us up to new, previously unimaginable forms of self-pleasure, for the most part its nascent existence has been little more than an extension of the clichés we've come to expect from Tube sites. Whether it's the rote 360 3D VR porn made most accessible through sites like Pornhub, or the more interactive adult VR games about customizing your own virtual sex doll — many criticize VR porn for being even more limited to the cis, heteronormative male gaze than regular porn.
But that's finally beginning to change.
youtube
"In the early days there was a concern that, if there's only a handful of people making content, they'll only make content that appeals to them or who they envision their consumers to be," said Ela Darling, a pioneer in the VR porn space as a performer as well as CMO of adult-only VR platform PVR and its IRIS headset. "But now there are more and more newcomers making diverse content, because the tech's finally making it more accessible to create."
As it turns out, there are untold, untapped possibilities for VR to transform the way we masturbate. And while the same problems from years ago remain, a new swath of VR porn is delivering on the medium's greatest promises, allowing for more intimacy between player and porn viewer, embodied experiences, better storytelling, and virtual explorations of kink.
From the impressive furry VR game Yiffalicious or innovatively kinky Dominatrix Simulator, some of the most popular virtual reality adult games are being made by small teams of indie designers sustained through niche, yet dedicated, Patreon communities. In the realm of live-action performances, PVR is about to launch a novel series of ASMR VR porn, with a gender-neutral design focused on sensorial experiences.
"What's most important to creating engaging adult content in VR is not a perfect pair of boobs you can play with. It's about erotica, creating experiences through storytelling," said Ana Valens, a game designer and Daily Dot columnist covering trans experiences, sexuality, and VR porn. (Note: The author of this article knows Valens socially.)
VR porn needs to move past the infantile stage of pure gimmick or odd sex toy to become relevant.
"And that's the direction the industry seems to be heading towards as people realize, OK, this isn't enough," she said.
The virtual reality porn gap
The current issues keeping VR porn from reaching more innovative, varied, and inclusive heights are reflective of the regular porn industry it grew from. But in VR porn, the issues of inclusivity are only exacerbated by the additional gatekeepers of tech, cost, and access.
Most mainstream VR porn is exclusively heteronormative and cis-gendered, assuming the user is male and excluding trans identities. This is likely driven by who has the resources, not only to have VR but to also make it. While the diversity of audiences is increasing through niche communities, the prevailing consumer base remains cis men.
Tumblr media
VR can be more than a virtual sex doll for men.

"Many VR porn creators seem less focused on exploration and possibly self-discovery, and more on simply getting off. That's fine. It's just not what we're all about," said Devilish Domina, who is the mind and voice behind the Dominatrix Simulator. "It seems like developers in this space are more opportunistic than seeing it as an art form. And because it tends to be a more taboo area, it likely doesn't attract as many experienced developers."
How the indie scene can save VR porn
While the norms of regular porn define the offerings of bigger, more traditional VR porn publishers like Naughty America, creators like Dominatrix Simulator's Deviant Tech are carving out their own space with their own growing audience.
Unlike many other VR games (erotic or otherwise) that assume you're male, Dominatrix Simulator gives you the option between two genders — and is currently working on adding non-binary options due to fan requests.
Tumblr media
Worship her — or just take the headset off if it becomes too much.

But that's not all that makes Dominatrix Simulator a beacon of innovation and sexual exploration in VR porn games.
In the game, a femme-dom (who comes in four different varieties) tells you what to do. While you get some dialogue options to communicate consent, the idea is that the dominatrix basically inhabits the role of the player, while the person wearing the headset becomes her game as a submissive, flipping the traditional adult video script of the player being in control. She knows whether or not you've obeyed, too, since the motion controls can detect whether you're kneeling like she commanded, for example.
SEE ALSO: Naughty America is betting big on VR porn at SXSW
"It's no longer just about your alone time at night getting off," Valens said. "It allows you to explore what it means to be a submissive, or in a BDSM relationship. What does it mean to play an adult game when you are not the one in charge? VR is perfect for that kind of question because BDSM is such an embodied experience."
While Dominatrix Simulator delivers an immersive BDSM simulation, it's also a tool for dipping your toes in BDSM rather than trying it first IRL.
"One of the things we've been most excited about with creating a VR submission experience for players is how safe it can be for new people to delve into kinky experiences, experiment being controlled in a really safe way, and enjoy themselves in the privacy of their own homes," said Devilish Domina. "Submitting isn't always easy. Being kinky or queer isn't always easy."
But in VR porn, you can let loose in ways you wouldn't imagine doing in real life. Also, unlike healthy BDSM relationships IRL, you can quit the virtual session whenever you want without needing to go through the usual steps with a partner, like aftercare (the term used for the check in stage after the roleplay is done).
"With our game, people are gaining confidence in their bodies and their interests. Many of them are taking risks and talking on our server, asking the 'newbie' questions, and venturing out to find others in the real world," said Devilish Domina. "And we hope to keep offering this kind of sex-positive space."
Much like a dominatrix, the simulator, "gives players the chance to experiment with letting go, giving in, and, ultimately, giving themselves permission to enjoy their bodies and their pleasure," she said. "We tell players to get naked. To show off. To touch themselves. To orgasm. We give them permission to let go."
As with many indie adult VR games of its kind, the Patreon community around Dominatrix Simulator is not only integral to funding their work but also to creating the diversity of content that VR porn deserves.
Tumblr media
Who knows, maybe you're into being a furry? No harm in trying.
Image: Yiffalicious,  Craket
"The fan community is absolutely critical for the indie and non-mainstream VR porn scene," said Devilish Domina, pointing to others like Yiffalicious and Virt-a-mate. "Fans with VR rigs know how small the market is to them for games, let alone VR porn, so they are a generous bunch who want to help fund new projects."
Aside from exploration, though, there's also an educational element to the best kind of VR porn.
Darling saw the potential for adult-themed VR as a form of social learning. She helped create a VR dating simulator of sorts, set in a rainy cafe where the viewer would get to talk to a holographic capture of herself and other performers.
There wasn't any actual porn involved, but if the player handled the situation well, they could get more forward and sexual with her. Their ability to broach the topic, though, was reliant on an invisible point system that accounted for whether the player chose to first engage in polite conversation rather than immediately jump into inappropriate or even mean behavior.
"If you said anything like that before you had established a rapport with this holographic person, she'd be like, 'You know what, I'm going to go.' We even put in a functionality where it would detect where your gaze was focused, so if you're staring at my tits my holograph would be like, 'Excuse me, my eyes are up here," she said.
The erotica of embodiment, environment, and intimacy
For a long time, Darling dominated the camgirl VR scene because she emphasized intimacy with the viewer.
"What works best in VR isn't these, you know, Olympic-style sexual scenes of extreme, graphic aggression. It's the ones that feel the most intimate and personal," Darling said.

New job, who dis? I’m officially the Chief Marketing Officer of PVR, an awesome adult VR headset/technology company!
A post shared by Ela Darling (@eladarling) on Jul 26, 2018 at 9:37am PDT
When it came to the new ASMR series, establishing that relationship was the central direction director Anna Lee gave all their performers. ASMR is already intimate itself, but VR brings a whole new level of closeness. "Incorporating the really cerebral aspects of ASMR with the visceral VR experience deepens and heightens that connection," said Darling..
That's true for the more game-ified adult VR experiences as well, though obviously in a more fantastical context.
"World-building is really important to creating arousing experiences. Mainstream porn has set a low bar for what is possible," Devilish Domina said. "But with this kind of immersive playground, we can make all fantasies into realities. We can let our players be someone they are not, like how people swap genders in games all the time ... We have had so many requests for experiences players just cannot have in real life."
And for sex columnist Ana Valens those possibilities are also in a way what makes VR potentially so valuable to the queer community.
While the world of VR is still severely lacking in queer content, some queer women have taken to adult games like Honey Select, which allows them to customize every minute detail of a virtual woman. But it still assumes the player is male, and that both participants are cis.
vimeo
"One thing that's bummed me out a lot about these adult VR games is that there's just no bodies like mine. It's just not there. I'm not gonna find it. It's just not what the priority is because, again, VR porn is mostly made for men," Valens said.
That's a particular shame, too, since VR as a medium is defined by its capacity to let you inhabit other bodies. That's an invaluable experience for someone who has never felt at home in their real-life body.
VR porn has come a long way since its earliest days of being just Tube porn on a Google Cardboard headset. But somehow, we're more ready to explore hardcore fantastical furry sex before approaching experiences grounded in the actual realities of trans people's embodied experiences.
"I don't know when we're going to see more queer VR games," Valens lamented. "We do see some, but adult queer VR probably won't happen for a while."
The good, the bad, and the future of getting off in VR
VR porn is far from having reached the height of its potential, with too many practical issues (like availability) to address before it possibly ever could. But some creators and a willing audience seem equally invested in seeing its freak flag fly. It feels like we've never felt closer to watching adult-themed VR flourish into something great.
The Deviant Tech team is already looking into how to implement remote controlled toys tied to Dominatrix Simulator's game controls ("think buttplug.io," Devilish Domina said.)
"We hope that our game kicks off a whole new niche in VR of self-loving, self-empowering porn — where, in the privacy of their own mind, people can experience their fantasies and explore new ones," she said.
But she is also cautious of certain aspects of VR porn, particularly its incredible power to allow users to lose themselves in those fantasies.
"The more immersive and realistic a game is — the more it makes a player feel — and the more addicting it can become. Porn is already a very addicting medium and many people find their relationships challenged when one partner is compulsive in their porn usage," she cautioned.
Similarly, Valens notes that VR porn will be defined by the ethics of the people wielding that tool.
"As the technology gets better, it becomes a tool, and a tool can be good and a tool can be bad. Tools that enter the hands of bigots or people that hate women are going to be used horribly," she said. As an example, she pointed to Studio FOW, a notorious hyper-realistic form of animated porn known for its extremely brutal, horrifyingly graphic, and unbelievably popular content.
There's another worry, too, that this burgeoning indie adult VR game scene will be squeezed out by big developers who limit the tech.
"Inevitably, VR porn will mainstream VR in general. And then VR companies will want to move to a closed garden format, like Android or iPhone," said Valens. "That would mean that the kind of resources needed to make VR porn would stay in the hands of these really privileged developers rather than being shared with marginalized people."
Tumblr media
A towering, giant VR Dominatrix shows VR porn's potential.
Image: deviant tech
But Darling is confident in VR porn's mainstay power among fans, who seem more than willing to pay to ensure it addresses various kinks and desires.
At its worst, VR porn can be just more of the same — if not even worse at objectifying women by turning them into literal objects to be manipulated and controlled by presumably male players. But at its best, VR porn is beginning to open doors to an endless possibility of new and progressive spank bank material.
"The world is changing. People want bodily autonomy. Sexual autonomy. And we want to see VR porn and adult experiences encourage this," said Devilish Domina. "There is so much potential for educating people about their bodies, letting them try different relationship styles, be different people, and give them the chance to discover more about themselves in a safe, non-judgmental environment."

A Mini-Disseration on Fanfiction
So I’ve been reflecting a lot recently about why people write fanfiction and make fanworks, and I think I’ve kinda sorted it in to a couple of categories. I’m positive I am not the first, but I still wanted to put my thoughts down somewhere.
My subcategories:
Canon was cut off abruptly
Canon is lacking something
Canon is one genre, but the core ideas would be interesting to explore in another
I know this doesn’t seem like many categories, but the more I tried to add, the more I realized they all fit somewhere under these three. I’ll start with the first one
#1. Canon was cut off abruptly.
This is a fanfiction classic. Your show was cancelled, the author of the book gave up on the series or died, there was a cliffhanger for something that was never finished, networks screwed up, so on and so forth. Often times, these works try to stay as true to canon as possible, because the core material cuts off and therefore the works are trying to fill in the missing, vitally important finale/info. (There is also an interesting subcategory of fics written following other unfinished fics. Very cool phenomenon.)
Notable fandom examples:
Unfinished book/book series (Game of Thrones, Dune, anything with a suuuper long hiatus)
Cancelled tv shows (The Society, Sanditon, I Am Not Okay With This, The Get Down, Sense8, Agent Carter, Firefly, Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Angel)
#2. Canon is lacking something.
This category covers a variety of sins. It’s important to note that this isn’t the same as #1 because the source material has been concluded, and the body of work is finished. There can be some blurred lines, especially with shows like Sense8, where they were cancelled and then had a special to round off what was supposed to be another few seasons, or original source material where the story technically didn’t end on a cliffhanger, it just ended when there was supposed to be more originally, but primarily this is for shows/material that had the amount of run time they wanted and were purposefully ended, or at least not against the will of the creators. So, this category includes a number of the most popular branches of fanworks including the following headcanons or au’s: more LGBTQ+ characters, more characters of color, more neurodivergent or mentally ill characters, scenes that could’ve been really cool if they had been included and/or not skipped over, scenes that never happened but fans think they should have, characters meeting that never did, crossovers, alternate universes where one thing changes (ie. canon divergences), different endings/retcons (happy ending or not), explicit content, and so the list goes on. A lot of my favorite types of fanworks are included in here.
Notable fandom examples:
Any and all non-canon LGBTQ+ relationships (John/Sherlock, Dean/Cas, Rizzoli/Isles, Remus/Sirius, Harry/Draco, Stiles/Derek, Xena/Gabrielle, Poe/Finn, Steve/Bucky or Steve/Tony or literally any combination of those characters)
Most Homestuck fanfiction
Any popular canon relationship that ended (HIMYM, most of Grey’s Anatomy, all of Glee)
Any show with a horrible ending/unpopular recent episodes (Sherlock, Game of Thrones, DW, Star Wars)
Any work with a popular character that died (Torchwood, Grey’s Anatomy again, Game of Thrones again, Buffy, OITNB, The 100, The Hunger Games, the entirety of Harry Potter, TFIOS)
And, finally
#3. Canon is one genre, but the core ideas would be interesting to explore in another.
Now, once again, I feel the need to specify why this category is separate from the last. So, I think the biggest difference between categories 2 and 3, is that while #2 expresses a lack of satisfaction with the original work, #3 is all about a deep adoration and love for the content that inspires a re-make or an au with canon events most intact, if not twisted to fit the new genre. Again, I can see the lines blurring somewhat. After all, there is content that I deeply adore, yet also feel like changing certain aspects of it. And to be clear, I think you can have fics that fall into multiple categories, if not all. But this sub-characterization relates specifically to honoring and reshaping the core content and ideas of the original work without major changes to the characters or messaging. And by this I absolutely do not mean headcanons about character ethnicity, race, culture, sexuality, or gender. I am specifically referring to someone taking a character like, say Frodo in LOTR, and rewriting the story with him as a wizard. A surface level change at first, however it changes the entire foundation of his character, which is that he goes on a journey from a humble, small, overlooked character to become a hero, proving the value of the everyman, and the quiet strength of peaceful people. Now, if someone wrote a fic where Frodo was thrown into a superhero au, where one day he gets superpowers by chance, that would fall under category #3. The first example would fuel an idea of what the story would be like if Frodo was immensely powerful, while the second maintains the character’s foundation, simply placing them into a new genre or setting in which those characteristics and themes can play out. This includes au’s that maintain canon events/character backstories even in slightly modified au’s.
Notable fandom examples:
Hogwarts au’s (not HP crossovers)
Coffeshop au’s
Historical au’s
Tattoo/Bookstore/Florist au’s
*provided all these examples purposefully maintain key elements of canon*
So, what’s the point?
There isn’t really a single point, I’m an academic weirdo who likes categorizing media and understanding the impulse that drives me and so many other people to consume and create fancontent, specifically fanfic. But, what I will say is that all three categories of work fulfill some need of a fan/consumer, and they can all be incredibly cathartic and/or a continuation of a deeply beloved original work. #1 appeals to those mourning the incomplete and premature ending of a show/book that they thought had a lot of potential. #2 appeals to people mourning the incompleteness of a finished work that could’ve had a lot more potential with some minor (or major) tweaks. #3 appeals to people who are mourning the ending of something they feel has the potential to be explored more, even if it was already explored well in the first place. This is how you get people writing novel length and longer fics, because they’re driven by dissatisfaction, even if they loved whatever the work is based on. I completely understand angrily rewriting an ending or a character, incorporating personal details or making a character more similar to oneself through the inclusion of various non-canonical identities. And, by no means am I implying one category contains better works than any other, but the creators who exist within the third category truly blow my mind at times, because this is often where you get people re-writing an entire series or movie from a different characters perspective, or people who write 300,000+ word coffee shop au’s or hogwarts au’s or spy au’s. This level of dedication honestly inspires me, because to go through the effort of re-intepreting and altering slightly an original work purely out of love and with little intent to directly contradict canon requires a level of devotion I can only aspire to.
TL;DR
And, finally, I want to say that I see all fancontent in any of these three categories as truly beautiful, because they are expressions of the human inclination to see the best in everything, and moreover, to try and leave things better than we found them. So yeah. That’s my word vomit for the moment. Happy writing.

Everything You Need to Know About WordPress: A 5-Minute Crash Course
If you want to build your own website, you can’t go wrong with WordPress. This flexible, powerful Content Management System (CMS) powers more than 37% of all sites on the internet, making it a leading platform.
However, like a TSA agent, it can be intimidating at first glance.
Fortunately, WordPress is much easier to understand than the airport’s ever-changing security protocol. With just a brief introduction, you’ll quickly find yourself able to create a stunning website in about five minutes. Plus, you can customize it to meet your exact needs and goals.
And you don’t even have to take your shoes off!
This article is a quick WordPress crash course, explaining what the platform is and why it’s so special. I’ll also give you an idea of what this CMS can be used for, then show you how to get started with DreamHost.
To the boarding gate!
Power Your Site with Managed WordPress Hosting
Hassle-free, high-performance WordPress hosting can help you grow your business. Plans start at $16.95/mo.
Choose Your Plan
What Is WordPress?
If you’re looking to build your first website, WordPress is an excellent solution.
WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS), a platform you can use to build and maintain a website without any knowledge of coding. This software enables you to customize just about every aspect of your site.
The first version of WordPress was created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. It began as a simple platform designed for people who wanted to create basic blogs and host them on the internet. Over time, however, it’s grown into a flexible, powerful tool for creating almost any type of site.
Before moving on, it’s important to make sure we’re on the same page. There are differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. The former is a website builder where you can create and host a site for free. It’s simple to use but also limited in what it can do. WordPress.org is a more powerful platform, so we’ll be focusing on it for the rest of this article.
What Makes WordPress Unique?
Many developers, designers, and other people contribute to making WordPress better every day.
The first thing you need to understand about WordPress is that it is open-source software. If you aren’t familiar with the term, it means the platform isn’t restricted under copyright or trademark, and is freely available for anyone to download and modify (under what is called the GNU General Public License).
What’s more, it means the WordPress Core is developed and maintained by a dedicated community.
This is great news for you as a user for a variety of reasons:
The platform is (and always will be) free to use.
Many free and low-cost tools are created for use with WordPress (more on this in a moment).
WordPress is designed by its community to be user-friendly and to have the features most needed by website creators.
You have a lot of freedom in how you choose to use and interact with the software and can modify it in any way you’d like via coding and other tools.
The fact that WordPress is open-source has enabled it to develop a strong, diverse community of contributors and enthusiasts, who regularly gather at WordCamps around the globe.
Remember that 37-percent-of-websites stat I threw at you earlier?
It’s not a stretch to say WordPress is an incredibly popular platform, and that makes getting help when you need it easy. You can find plenty of online documentation, forums, WordPress-focused blogs, dedicated courses and resources (including our own DreamHost Academy) and much more. No matter what you’re trying to do, chances are someone else has done it before and can help you out.
Of course, WordPress isn’t just for beginners!
The beauty of the CMS is that it’s able to scale alongside its users. As you learn about the platform and acquire new technical knowledge and skills, you’ll be able to do more and more with WordPress. You can create and run a simple blog, but you can also design large, complex websites for businesses and online stores. With WordPress, the sky’s the limit!
What Can You Do With WordPress?
The WordPress dashboard makes it easy to manage everything about your site from one location.
WordPress began as a small, blogging-focused platform. This means it has a lot of features that lend themselves to blogs, and it’s perhaps the best solution you can find for that type of site. There’s an easy-to-use editor for creating posts, robust comments functionality, and much more.
However, WordPress is no longer just for your personal blog. In fact, you can use it to create just about any type of site you can imagine. Here is just a small selection of the types of sites WordPress is ideal for:
Online portfolios: With the right WordPress theme, it’s easy to set up an online portfolio to showcase your achievements and skills, display your work and past projects, and (most importantly) to reel in new clients.
Affiliate websites: If you want to create an affiliate marketing website (or monetize your site in some other way), the WordPress community offers lots of dedicated solutions.
News sites: WordPress’ blog format works well for news articles, and many of the same features lend themselves to both blogging and news sites.
E-commerce stores: If you’re running a store online (or planning to), there are lots of WordPress tools, such as the WooCommerce plugin, to make the job simple (be sure to check out our WooCommerce Hosting package to get started).
Community hubs: You can easily create forums, fan sites, knowledge bases, wikis, or any other place for like-minded people to gather online.
Business sites: Whether your business is large or small, you can share information, provide contact details, incorporate your branding, and build a strong online presence.

If you aren’t sure what type of site you want to create yet, you can always start small and scale up over time. It isn’t hard to begin with a simple blog, and turn it into a news or affiliate site whenever you’d like. You can also create a site that fulfills various roles — for example, a business website with an accompanying company blog, as well as a connected storefront to sell your products or services.
While many of the sites listed above are made possible thanks to WordPress themes, plugins, and other tools, we’d be remiss not to mention the many features the platform offers out of the box that are useful to all types of sites.
Chief among these is the central, user-friendly WordPress dashboard. This is a private admin area you log into, where you can control all aspects of your site from one place.
The dashboard is also home to a flexible, easy-to-use editor that makes content creation a breeze. You get access to plenty of settings and customization options so you can make the site your own. Plus, WordPress is designed with performance, security, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in mind — crucial elements for practically every site regardless of its size or focus.
Last but not least, WordPress offers a wealth of themes and plugins to personalize your experience.

How Do You Customize WordPress?
The WordPress Plugin Directory offers tools that can add nearly any feature imaginable to your site.
On its own, WordPress is a powerful but fairly basic website solution. You can make some changes to the way your site looks and acts, and if you’re comfortable with HTML and CSS, you can make just about any alterations you’d like. If you don’t have that level of technical proficiency, however, you can use themes and plugins to customize it to your exact needs.
Themes are pieces of software you can download and install on your WordPress website, which change the way it looks. Using a theme, you can alter your site’s layout and appearance and even make some changes to its functionality.
Some themes are general-purpose, making it possible for you to personalize your site to match your own style and branding. Others are specific to a particular type of website — so you can find themes perfect for blogs, online stores, portfolios, and just about anything else. Either way, themes usually provide access to a lot of pre-made elements you can mix and match to create a unique look, whether or not you’re a designer.
Choosing a theme can be a difficult decision. Our WP Website Builder makes this task easier, providing over 200 top-quality options to choose from. It only takes a single click to install your favorite. Once you’ve installed your theme, you’ll be able to use the builder’s drag-and-drop tools to fully customize your website. There’s no coding or design skills needed!
Related: How to Pick the Right WordPress Theme for Your Website
In contrast to themes, plugins enable you to add new features and functionality to your site. You can find simple plugins that add only one new feature, such as a contact form or image gallery, or comprehensive options to make radical changes to the way your site functions.
Using plugins, you can build a storefront, enhance security, optimize your site for search engines, create a forum or wiki, and much more. Whatever you’d like your site to do, chances are you can find a plugin to make it possible. To prove it, we’ve written many a plugin tutorial over the years:

There are a lot of places to find WordPress plugins and themes online. If you’re new to the platform, we’d recommend starting with the official Theme Directory and Plugin Directory. A few minutes spent browsing through these pages should give you a clearer idea for what WordPress is capable of with just a few modifications.
How Should You Get Started With WordPress?
youtube
Hopefully, by this point we’ve convinced you that WordPress is well worth trying out. Now what?
Since WordPress is a self-hosted platform, there are a few steps involved in creating your first site. But don’t worry! The process isn’t that hard. For a birds-eye view of the process, check out the quick-start video above, then read through the steps below for a complete walkthrough.
1. Sign up for a Hosting Plan
You’ll need access to a web server — a place where your site’s data and files are saved, which can transmit information across the web to anyone who visits your domain name. This means purchasing a hosting plan.
There are many types of plans available, depending on your particular needs and the kind of site you’re creating. One of the best choices you can make is to pick a quality, WordPress-specific hosting plan.
Consider our own DreamPress plans, for example. We pre-install WordPress for you, so you can get your site up and running fast. These plans are also managed, which means we’ll take care of ensuring that your site performs well and runs securely — so you can focus on designing your content.
If you choose the DreamPress Plus or Pro plans, you’ll also get Jetpack Professional. This is a comprehensive plugin that provides SEO and security features for free.
If you’re on a tight budget, you could consider our Shared hosting plans. Starting at just $2.59/mo, these plans give you everything you need to get a site up and running without investing too much up front. As your site grows, you can always upgrade to a more robust DreamPress plan down the line.
Whichever plan you choose, we’re happy to help you get set up and answer any questions you might still have about WordPress and web hosting. We have plenty of WordPress experts you can contact through a variety of channels, day or night.
Once you’ve decided which hosting plan is right for you, add it to your cart and begin the checkout process. We recommend that you opt to have us install WordPress and enable WP Website Builder during registration (it makes building your site quickly much easier).
Once you’ve paid for your plan, you’ll receive an email confirmation that includes the information you’ll need to get started.

2. Explore Your Control Panel
Once you’ve signed up for a hosting plan, you’ll want to get familiar with your control panel. You can start by logging in from the DreamHost user panel login page and having a look around. This control panel is where you’ll find all the tools you need to manage your website.
There are a couple of administrative tasks you’ll want to take care of right away. You’ll need to register a domain (if you didn’t do so during the checkout process) and make sure WordPress is installed. Later, you’ll also use this control panel to configure your website mail, add new users, and access your MySQL databases.
3. Register a Domain
This is the unique web address where your site will be hosted. Try to choose a domain that is unique and catchy but simple enough for visitors to easily remember. You can check to see if your desired domain is available (and buy it) from a domain registrar or a web hosting company.
Once you have a domain and a hosting plan, it’s time to start building a site!
If you opted to have us pre-install WordPress for you during your account registration, move on to step 4. If you didn’t, you can install WordPress manually, although many hosting providers will offer an easier solution. WordPress-specific hosts (like us!) often offer a one-click installation option.
4. Access and Customize Your Site
Now it’s time to actually build that website you’ve been dreaming about!
WP Website Builder’s “getting started” wizard will be ready and waiting for you the first time you log in to your WordPress dashboard. This wizard, which was built by our friends at BoldGrid, will guide you through everything you need to do to get your site published and ready for visitors.
First, you’ll pick out your theme using the Inspirations library. This is a massive collection of themes organized by industry. Each theme includes gorgeous demo content, which you can swap out for your own original content as needed.
Once you’ve picked your favorite theme (and don’t worry, you can always change your mind later) you’ll choose which pages are installed and whether or not you want a blog on your site. You can keep it simple, or go with the ‘kitchen sink’ option to install all of the available pages. You can also check the responsiveness of your theme, to make sure it looks right on every device.
Finally, you can give the wizard some information that it can use to fill out other areas of your site, such as your social media profiles. This section is optional, but it will save you a lot of time later on.
After exiting the wizard, you’ll see your site’s pages on your WordPress dashboard. From there, you can further customize your pages using the drag-and-drop editing tools and pre-built design blocks.
With the WP Website Builder, you’ll see your edits in real time, so you won’t have to blindly guess at what you’re changing. You’ll use these same tools to add content to your blog.
If you feel like your website is missing features, you can start exploring plugins you may want to add. It’s okay to start small with this step. We recommend looking for a quality theme first, and then choosing a couple of plugins to add the features you want.
You can always install more plugins over time as you need them. If you aren’t sure where to start, there are a handful of popular plugins that are a smart choice for almost any website.
5. Start Creating Content
There are two main types of content in WordPress: posts and pages (although some themes and plugins add more options). Both use the same beginner-friendly editor, so you’ll find that putting together your first few pieces of content is a breeze.
Don’t forget to include a contact page so visitors can get in touch! If you entered your contact information during the setup process, the WP Website Builder will automatically add it to your contact page.
As you add content to your site, you’ll use the same drag-and-drop tools that made building your pages so simple. Plus, WP Website Builder will give you Search Engine Optimization (SEO) suggestions right on the page. This will help get more traffic to your beautifully-designed website!

WordPress Course Complete
WordPress is popular largely because it’s a perfect solution for a wide variety of applications. Both beginners and seasoned developers can use it to create small blogs, booming e-commerce sites, and everything in between.
What’s more, it is surprisingly simple to get started with!
To create your first WordPress site, you’ll need to select a domain name and sign up for a hosting plan (we recommend DreamPress). Then you can install the platform and start customizing your site. With the WP Website Builder, this process is fast and easy. Choose a unique theme, add your pages, do some quick customization, and you’re ready to publish!

NADEL PARIS PERFORMANCE
Better Live Music Performance Tips
Hip-hop is not only about audio. Hiphop is all about party, craft, appearance, ache, love, bias, sexism, cracked people, hard-times, beating hardship and the search for God. It is a vocabulary, a way of living, a lifestyle, a style, a set of ideals, and a unique viewpoint. Hip-hop is about currently trying to live the American dream out in the bottom-up.
Hip hop culture is a trend that is unique since it affect and does combine a wide variety of civilizations, ages. In the 1970is the unnamed tradition identified nowadays as hip hop was forming in the ghettos in Nyc. Each element in this tradition had its history and language adding to the progress of the cultural activity. The tradition was determined within the 1980is when Afrika Bambaataa called the vibrant downtown motion, hip hop. Since that time hiphop contains advanced into a tradition having its own terminology, style of attire and mindset and has supported as being a strong voice and form of phrase for small black people. The hip hop culture envelops not merely trend but also music and dancing.
Ms. Nadel Rome can be an artist, musician, audio maker, songwriter, dancer creator, screenwriter, and her music is just a mix between different styles: Party, EDM, Place, Urban etc.
Nadel Paris has a voice which everybody remembers when they notice it! She has an audio that is really distinct that is hot.
What makes the evolution of hip hop may be flavor's selection the lifestyle has to offer and what hip-hop heads succeed on is personality and creativity, which is never more obvious than in hiphop fashion. In reality, hip hop trend is among the leading clothing companies in the world today. It is claimed to possess begun while in the African American group but has spread quickly into being a really widespread model for folks of sexes and all ethnicities plus a lynchpin of rap lifestyle.
Culture will be the item of the recent reality. the function and thought of people creates the personality of a culture. It is the expression of component or the school of a particular school and it is reflective of a selected time. The draw of Hiphop tradition as an organizing system has developed mostly since there is no existing governmental apparatus that sufficiently addresses the needs of inadequate and working class communities or young adults and/; in a political machine. Tradition, for the key of how folks state their beliefs, ideals and traditions, reductions like a standard issue. Hiphop lifestyle is the noisy and many noticeable representative business of its identification.
Hiphop dancing is developing in many various recommendations nowadays, heavily inspired by the advancement of its own recognition and hip-hop audio in press, surrounded by hot arguments on authenticity and background. Birth was given by modern hip hop music to new styles of hiphop dancing partly encouraged from the old-school variations. Nearly all of these models focused instead of breakdance which can be better known because of its flooring-oriented motions on dance that was vertical. To express the imaginative talent of one, hip-hop dance is perhaps the best way where words and thoughts result from the spirit.
Audio has usually performed with a vital role in shaping attitudes and minds. Rap music sheds light on contemporary politics, heritage and battle. The societal influence hiphop music is wearing the rap societal motion contains activities of other aspects, linked jargon, manner and dance. Hip-hop music involves dancing, visual art, the written phrase and rhythmic model with complex beats. Music has no limitations and no restrictions; something worthwhile should be accessible through audio, particularly spirituality and faith. There is about the hip hop individuality a huge affect its music that is redeeming.
Distributed by Tony Bucher and Universal Audio, Two of her beats Oh Lalala and Funk It-Up characteristic rapper extraordinaire Jagged I has created an enormous with around 1.2 million landscapes blended.
The word easy listening has been used being a draw for popular music's style that's simple on the hearing; comfortable, lovely, light music for decades. It advanced into move music and big-band and first appeared at the center of the 20th-century. Easy listening music's ease is that it draws laid's romance rhythmic tunes, popular with couples throughout the earth. Anything can be included by the type from groups and place singers, exotica painters, right through to critical varieties often played on violins, organs etc. The genre is to what is named lounge music extremely similar. Nevertheless, lounge music is more determined by musical improvisation and jazz orientated. Easy listening orchestrated and is usually fixed in place of improvised, which will be possibly why it's easy listening.
Another subject fond of easy listening is elevator or raise music. This is usually called muzak, and typically known in a way that was derogatory. I am sure we've all been stuck in a raise, being forced therefore there's no question muzak is considered in a way that is derogatory to endure the continual drone of noise falling from the speakers. However, as Muzak is really a company which production, provides and programs this easy-listening audio, it isnot actually a style by itself in any way.
The term easy listening is really a comparatively broad one for the reason that it is also usedto explain genres for example easy jazz new age audio and soft-rock, though it isnot proper to incorporate these while in the brand at all and many more. not a lot of US would place them in this genre of music, although afterall, actually Metallica have songs on the softer aspect that may be called easy-listening.
Modern music will be the perfect complement to yoga meditation, stress reading and management. The melodies are similar and comforting and frequently incorporate a drum-beat to provide a hypnotic effect. And even though there are rarely lines in new-age music, they could include harmonies and chants.
Easy jazz is just a sub-style of jazz that is affected by R&T, funk, steel and place. Contemporary derivatives of the type are broadcast radio's new adult contemporary structure. Nonetheless, 2007 has Nadel Paris Performance been ceased since by clean jazz's reputation and in the usa it was abandoned by several visible radio stations, although history income and smooth jazz shows still proceed to show fan service.
Comfortable rock, additionally labeled cool, simple or gentle rock, employs the tactics of rock n move to construct a gentler, more toned sound that is down that is easier around the ears and heartrate. Soft-rock tracks tend to be depending on interactions and existence and love and tend to include pianos, acoustic instruments and synths. Electric guitars are toned-down to offer a noise that was softer.
The American newspaper Billboard featured an easy listening singles data while in the 1960is an easy listening audio top40. This morphed into an adult contemporary information in 1979 and proceeds even today. Music that is wonderful or nostalgia; a subset of easy-listening music, had very rigid requirements for instrumentation only a limited number of words might be enjoyed in a hour and when enjoyed about no saxophones or the stereo few may be enjoyed. Generally, well known address designs of the 60's and 70is were re arranged and customized during its top in popularity into crucial melodies for that radio format.
It really is fairly significant that each one music's varying forms should retain their very own personality rather than be set under this quite simple to-use easy listening brand. You will find lots of varieties of music it'd be convenient to material to the, let us experience it, typically boring, easy-listening package which have their very own very unique nuances and deserve to have their own label.
Nadel Paris is a recording artist, musician, music producer, Screenwriter, dancer songwriter, and her music is just a mixture between various styles: Party, EDM, Place, Downtown etc.
She's likewise an actor, an mentor, a movie/ TV producer as well as the proprietor of the best behaving establishment in particular development for kids. For year Nadel and her team have now been the component towards particular progress for kids.
For many proven D.J.'s, meaning those individuals who have been D.J.'ing for a time whether it is in the membership or while in their room, audio production may be the move. Because D.J.'s play with a wide variety of kinds of music they locate large amount of defeats and looks. This inspires some D.J.is to sample those sounds and beats and make their own melodies up.
Music production involves making the music from damage and audio design entails therefore it sounds great, blending the various devices together.
Here is the music production stage's beginning. There are 3 phases Nadel London considers, to audio production: preproduction, audio production and postproduction.
Level 1 pre production
The music production period may be the crafting of the new track. It is the pre- stage because you are just trying out music. Where music in the history or mp3 is felt utilizing a sampler or drummachine such as an Akai MPC this really is. But one which just sample and produce audio you have to be sure your equipment is properly related:
To be able to taste you've to make sure you choose the phono option on my music device. After testing the sounds change to the CD choice on music model so you can notice the play in the drum machine. Once you've rescued your entire function and concluded your musical arrangement and you're content with it you could transfer to the element two of the preproduction section.
During this phase if you generate designers to perform on, is you observe. Where you commence to arrange audio or the course you created with the artists, that is. This venture interval allows you as well as the performers to generate alterations that are small towards the words along with the audio. You may even increase or take-away areas of the course including introducing strings or additional drums. The performers may practice their song using your monitor. Once this is quite tight you move to the studio to lay the words along with the audio on separate recording songs. Exactly why you wish to exercise before you get to the studio is really because facility time is quite expensive and you also don't need to waste time exercising in. That's where you have to focus your entire period making sure the music and vocals are saved precisely without leaps and clicks.
Level 2 Music Production
The mixing the main music creation phase is done within the studio where all of vocal songs and the music tracks are combined together to offer that which you hear on your own CD.
Oral track and each drum is blended and adjusted using what's called a mixing board like software-based mixing console-like Protools or my Akai DPS24 solely larger.
Where the audio engineer comes into play if you arrive at the studio this really is. This individual is responsible for making certain you all audio looks excellent. These people have years of experience. Some D.J./ since they know how they need their audio to sound, Producers also likes to manufacture their particular music. The audio engineer basically facilitates the D.J, if here is the situation then. With mixing the audio and utilizing the studio equipment.
Level 3 Postproduction
The process starts, following the mixing is performed. To what is named a Mastering Facility where particular gear is employed to bring out the perfect sound, the ultimate combination is taken. While this process is accomplished the final link between the melody distributed to the customer and are then pressed on CD or vinyl.

Random Musings: Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2017
©Sana Takeda
I didn’t actually realize it until I started writing up my random musings for the 2017 Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF), but this year was actually my five-year TCAF anniversary! For the first two years I coordinated the trip with a friend (a different one each year), but for the last three years my TCAF adventures have been combined with a Toronto family vacation. 2017’s TCAF trip leaned a little more heavily towards family activities than in years past, but I still found the opportunity to enjoy what the festival had to offer. And seriously, TCAF has a tremendous amount to offer. It’s the only comics-related event that I currently attend, and it’s absolutely worth challenging my social anxiety and general awkwardness.
Although there are TCAF-related events throughout May, the festival-proper usually takes place on Mother’s Day weekend which was May 13th and 14th this year. As mentioned, much of the emphasis of my trip this year was on family vacationing. We made a long weekend of it, leaving on Thursday and returning on Sunday. On Thursday, after treating ourselves to breakfast at a favorite local restaurant and taking the young one to a weekly language development play group (which I hadn’t actually had the opportunity to visit before since I’m usually working when the class is held), the four of us (three adults and a toddler) piled into the car on headed out.
If we were to drive straight through from where we live in Michigan to Toronto, it would take about four and a half hours but we arrived a little over six hours after we left. Things always seem to take a bit longer when kids are involved, not to mention the fact that we also happened to stop for a leisurely picnic lunch once we were in Canada and well on our way. I don’t remember exactly what time we finally pulled into Toronto, but it was late enough that I missed the book launch party for Jane Mai and An Nguyen’s newest collaboration So Pretty / Very Rotten: Comics and Essays on Lolita Fashion and Culture which I had hoped to attend. Instead, we all took our time settling into the room for our stay and then ordered tasty takeout from a place that was a surprising combination of pizzeria and Asian fusion.
On Friday, the whole family spent most of the day at the Ontario Science Centre, which was fantastic. We mainly focused on the interactive areas geared towards younger ages and so certainly didn’t see everything there was to see; I would like to go back sometime and explore even more of the centre because we all had a great time. After resting up in our room for a bit, we eventually made our way down to The Distillery Historic District for dinner, drinks, and other diversions. In the past, Friday night would have been the night that I would take off for the Sparkler Monthly mixer, but this year that party was held on Saturday evening instead. (Sadly, this also meant Sparkler’s party conflicted with the annual queer mixer.)
After spending most of Thursday and Friday with the family, I was mostly off on my own on Saturday enjoying the first day of TCAF. As in years past, I started my morning off wandering the exhibitor areas before they got super crowded. I mostly explored the Toronto Reference Library,  which had three floors of exhibitors this year, but eventually made my way to the exhibitors situated in the Masonic Temple as well. I wasn’t quite as social as I have been at previous festivals, but I did make a point to at least say hello to the creator’s that I recently supported through Kickstarter who were at the festival. I spent a fair amount of time going through all of the exhibitor’s online portfolios before arriving in Toronto, making notes to myself of the tables that I wanted to be sure to stop by, but in the end I really did try to see everything there was to see. One of the things I love about TCAF is the wide variety of comics at the event, but I especially appreciate the number of queer creators and the amount of queer content present.
Exploring the rainforest at the Ontario Science Centre
In addition to all of the phenomenal exhibitors, TCAF also has a strong lineup of panels, workshops, and creator spotlights. As usual, it was a tremendous challenge deciding which events I wanted to go to, especially as so many of the conflict with one another. In the end I settled on six, all but one of which were held on Saturday. There were definitely others that I wanted to attend, too, but for one reason or another (such as waking up with a migraine on Sunday morning or a cranky toddler) I wasn’t ultimately able to fit them all into my schedule.
Since I’m a musician on top of being a huge fan of comics, one of the panels that immediately caught my interest was “Sounds and Vision: Music in Comics,” moderated by Phillipe Leblanc, which explored how artists portray and convey music and sound in a visual medium. Although I haven’t actually read any of their comics (yet), I did recognize the panelists by name–Dave Chisholm, Nick Craine, Anya Davidson, Sandrine Revel, and Eric Kostiuk Williams. All of the creators on the panel had at least some musical background, formal or otherwise (Chisholm even has a doctorate in jazz trumpet), and consider music to be one of their passions. In some ways the two artforms, music and comics, are incompatible since each one requires so much time to master as an artist, but they can still be brought together. If nothing else, creators’ experiences as musicians can inform and influence the stories they want to tell. Effectively incorporating music into a comic requires more than just putting music notes on a page. As Chisholm pointed out, musical notation isn’t really music either–it’s simply ink on paper, a visual shorthand (much like comics themselves). In order to convey the intended feeling of the music, comic creators must instead rely on page and panel design to capture a sense of tempo, movement, and flow. Creative use of typography can also be effective, especially when lyrics are involved, and imaginative onomatopoeiae can serve as a device to form a visual soundscape. Often a literal representation of music isn’t what is demanded by a narrative, it’s the emotional resonance and impact of that music that needs to be seen, whether it’s the focus of a comic or simply being used as a background element to help set a scene.
After spending a little more time browsing the exhibitor areas, the next panel that I attended was simply titled “Sports!” which included Michael Nybrandt, Ngozi Ukazu, Sonam Wangyal, and Jarrett Williams as panelists and RJ Casey as a moderator. While in Japan sports comics have been immensely successful, the subgenre hasn’t thrived in the same way in the North American comics industry. Although there have been some independent sports comics with impressive followings, such as Ukazu’s Check, Please!, in general sports comics continue to be a hard sell for many major publishers. In the 1990s there were some unsuccessful mainstream attempts that basically tried to turn sports comics into superhero narratives rather than focusing on the underlying human story, something that didn’t work well at the time. There’s also the question of audience since there is a lingering and inaccurate stereotype that “nerds don’t like sports.” (Ukazu commented that it might actually be more difficult to sell sports comics to sports fans than to comics fans.) Sports stories provide ready-made and easily understood narratives which allow the incorporation and exploration of other subjects such as politics, religion, and performance of gender, making those issues more acceptable or palatable for readers. Emotional highs and lows are inherent to the stories, often directly tied to the athletes’ successes and failures in competition. Sports comics can risk becoming repetitive since the most basic story arc is the often same–someone will win and someone will lose–but while the ending may be already be determined, how the comic arrives at that ending is not. Changing the implications of winning and losing can introduce new dynamics and not all the conflict and drama has to happen within the context of the sport itself.
TCAF Haul 2017! (minus a t-shirt and poster)
While the first two panels I went to were both held at the Stealth Lounge at The Pilot, my next three panels were located at another of TCAF’s primary event locations, the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville Hotel which allows for larger gatherings. It’s a good thing, too. Glen Downey, who was moderating “Creating While Depressed,” noted that it was one of the most well-attended TCAF panels with which he has been involved. The subject matter being discussed appeared to strike a very personal chord with many of the people in the audience, myself included. The panelists–Meredith Gran, Tara Ogaick, Meredith Park, and Shivana Sookdeo–were all very candid and open, sharing their own experiences as creators who have to carefully balance their mental health with their creative work. They talked about how damaging the idealized stereotype of the “tortured artist” is and how the romanticized portrayal of depression found in popular culture is often vastly different from actual experience. In reality, people with depression are creating despite depression rather than because of it. For them, comics can be an outlet for expression and a way to alleviate some of the symptoms of depression, but at their lowest points it may be impossible for them to produce any work at all. It is at those times when communication and honesty are particularly crucial in order to clearly delineate limitations and establish realistic expectations not only for themselves but for the people with whom they might be working. The panelists also emphasized the importance of finding a supportive, close-knit community. Although they were specifically speaking as artistic creators with depression, I found that their experiences strongly resonated with my own and could be more broadly relatable.
My fourth panel of the day was “21st Century Webcomics,” featuring Michael DeForge, Blue Delliquanti, Priya Huq, Matt Lubchansky, and moderated by Tom Spurgeon. I don’t actually follow as many comics online as I used to–I find reading digital content difficult and/or frustrating for a wide variety of reasons–but I am still a huge supporter of webcomics, frequently buying print editions if they exist. As with any medium, webcomics have evolved over time especially as advances in the creation of digital artwork have also been made. Likewise, the relationship between webcomics and print comics have changed and there is less of a sense that they are at war these days. Instead, webcomics are often used to support their print equivalents. Because they are online, webcomics are inherently more discoverable and more widely accessible which helps to build an audience and further promote a creator’s work. Webcomics can also give a creator the opportunity to experiment with new methods and formats of expression that simply aren’t realistically feasible or even possible in print, such as the use of infinite canvass, animation techniques, or interactive elements. Creators have a tremendous amount of freedom when it comes to webcomics, allowing personal or experimental works to be produced and distributed that more traditional or mainstream comic publishers might initially be reluctant to take a risk on. However, while it was hoped that the Internet would allow creators to more directly deliver their content to readers and flatten out publishing hierarchies (which to some extent has occurred), the reality is that there has been a rise in intermediaries. More and more, creators find they frequently have to rely on multiple external systems and platforms like Kickstarter, Patreon, and social media to sustain their work.
“LGBTQ Comics Abroad,” moderated by Justin Hall, was the one panel that I wanted to be sure to make it to above all others not just because the subject matter had to do with queer comics but because Gengoroh Tagame was participating. (Even if someone isn’t a fan of Tagame’s works, his immense historical knowledge and experience as a gay comics creator makes his panels well-worth seeking out.) The other panelists included A.C. Esguerra, Molly Ostertag, Tommi Parrish, and Martina Schradi. Anne Ishii was also there, technically to assist with interpretation for Tagame, but she also had her own thoughts and experiences to bring to the discussion. The panelists talked about their work and the state of queer comics within their own countries (Japan, United States, Australia, and Germany) but also the challenges presented when considering international audiences. Queer identities are formed differently from culture to culture, and some of the nuances of those differences can be difficult to convey or translate, however there are still some shared and common experiences that are not limited by borders; social mores and contexts will often vary, but universal themes can still be found. The online environment has presented an opportunity for queer comics to be successful in ways that are currently difficult through traditional publishing, although the mainstream comics industry has been slowly making progress. The Internet allows for an unprecedented ease of global access to and distribution of queer content; it has been possible for numerous communities and support networks to be established which aren’t limited by geographic boundaries. But along with the good, there is also the bad–the piracy, scanlations, and extreme levels of fan entitlement present online can be hugely damaging.

As mentioned, Saturday night I went to the Sparkler TCAF Mixer. I brought the little one along with me to allow the family’s other two adults to have a child-free dinner date. A good time was had by all and I had the chance to catch up with not only the Chromatic Press/Sparkler Monthly folks but some of Seven Seas’ people as well. There’s a bit of an overlap between the two groups even though the demographics of each company’s audience are currently the inverse of each other. (Interesting tidbit: According to a recent Sparkler Monthly survey, while women form the core readership, at present Chromatic Press has more nonbinary readers than male readers.) Expect some really great things and exciting announcements to come from both publishers in the near future.
Sunday ended up being a much shorter day than was originally planned (I was really hoping to attend the So Pretty / Very Rotten discussion on Lolita culture at the Japan Foundation, for one). However, I and one of my partners were able to at least make it to The Pilot for the panel “Looks Good Enough to Eat: Comics and Food” before we all headed back to Michigan. We sadly missed out 2016’s food comics panel, so we were particularly happy to be there this year. Perhaps unsurprisingly considering my well-known love of food comics, I was already familiar with the work of most of the panelists: Sarah Becan, Emily Forster, Robin Ha, Jade Feng Lee, and Kat Verhoeven. Along with moderator Lauren Jorden, the group discussed what appealed to them about creating and reading comics that prominently feature or incorporate food. The subgenre of food comics is actually quite diverse, including comics explicitly about food (recipe comics, autobiographical works, or journalistic reviews) as well as comics that use food as a theme or aesthetic. Everyone has to eat, which can make food comics particularly accessible; it’s a shared experience that can serve as a gateway into comics. Food is a multisensory experience, so it can be challenging when working in a medium that primarily relies on one. However, an important part of eating is the visual experience, so to that extent comics are a natural fit. Comics can evoke a feeling or mood that can’t be captured in the same way with photography or other visual artforms. Often there is a strong emotional component to food comics. Even when the subject matter is specifically about food, food itself isn’t just food–it’s history, community, culture, relationships, and personal expression. And comics can be all of those things, too.
And with that,  and after one last tour through the exhibitor areas, the whole family prepared to depart for home. Though I didn’t end up doing everything that I had originally planned or hoped to do,  but I still had a fantastic trip. Toronto is a terrific city and TCAF is a phenomenal festival. However inadequately, I’ve tried to convey some of that greatness here by highlighting a little of what I learned and experienced. However, there’s so much more that I could have (and perhaps should have) written about because there’s so much more to the festival. I definitely plan on attending TCAF for the foreseeable future.

71 Reasons Universal Should Build Their Own Avatar Land
New Post has been published on https://twentysomethinginorlando.com/universal-needs-avatar/
71 Reasons Universal Should Build Their Own Avatar Land
I have long said that Nickelodeon must not like money, because they had a potential gold mine on their hands with the Avatar: the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra series. I know from experience that Universal likes money, so they should pounce on said potential gold mine and build an Avatar Land of their own. I have a list of 71 reasons why.
It would make Disney and their Pandora: the World of Avatar and blue people very angry. Has anyone noticed the logo has almost the same font used on all the episode titles?
Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have HUGE fan bases. The original series premiered in 2005, Korra concluded in 2014 and the fandom is still going strong.
When the Nucleus Art Gallery held a show dedicated to art from shows, the line wrapped around the building for hours with people camping over night for limited edition art prints. I was out there for four hours before we got in.
The vast majority of people waiting for said art show were in full cosplay, so events like the Harry Potter Celebration could be possible.
Republic City would fit in perfectly as a new island in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. It could easily replace the outdated Lost Continent or Toon Lagoon.
Universal has had many partnerships with Nickelodeon in the past. Spongebob and Dora the Explorer currently appear as characters in the parks and in the parade even though they do not have rides.
Universal’s greatest success has been The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Nothing is going to top that, but bringing in another outside, in depth world, could do almost as well.
Legend of Korra’s poor ratings were due to Nickelodeon constantly moving the show’s timeslot around, poor marketing (they literally aired season three with about a weeks notice), and general mishandling of the show. Once it went to digital, the numbers skyrocketed.
Avatar: the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra appeal to all ages. The original series was aimed at boys seven-ten, and I was a thirteen year old girl when I started watching. I was a member of several online fan sites, and I had in depth discussions with people twice my age. I had a professor in college that watched both series with her sons!
This would be Nick’s opportunity to make up for the travesty of the Last Failbender.
Universal needs something with a vast source to pull from for a new land or ride, with opportunities for fans to find their favorite things that were never available before.
Incorporating the Republic City Spirit Portal could also allow guests to step into the Spirit World either on a ride or as part of the land itself.
Universal would have much more creative control and be able to branch out more than they did with the Wizarding World because they would not need the creators’ sign off on every little detail.
As stated previously, Nickelodeon clearly does not like money, so Universal could probably get the rights pretty cheaply.
By focusing on just one area of the Avatar world there would be plenty of material into future expansion if Universal wanted to incorporate it into whatever they’re doing with all that land they purchased. Much like the two Wizarding World lands, there could be a Republic City land and a land dedicated to the original series.
Despite being off the air, there is still new content being created. There are comics coming, slowly but surely, so the fandom can keep growing but they are not dependent on movie sequels.
All of Avatar: the Last Airbender and the first three seasons of Legend of Korra are on Amazon Prime video for easy viewing both for Universal’s research purposes and for people to become acquainted with the world.
My mother has only seen a handful of the episodes start to finish, and she would understand a theme park land based around it with no explanation. I guarantee there are more parents who can do the same.
At one point, a Nickelodeon executive even said Avatar could become their Harry Potter! I agree with you! WHY DID YOU RUIN IT WITH THAT AWFUL MOVIE??
There are already theme park rides that have been built based on the series. One is the central ride to Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall of America called Avatar Airbender and another similar ride exists at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in England. Kings Island previously had one as well before removing all of their Nickelodeon rides.
Nickelodeon Universe. Photo from Theme Park Review.
Fun fact: Avatar: the Last Airbender was the first show to beat Spongebob for the Kids’ Choice Awards for best cartoon in TEN YEARS. It was never nominated again and is the only show to beat the demonic yellow cube.
This would be the one thing that would get me to renew my annual pass with Universal, or get a new one I guess since mine has been expired so long. I think it would do the same for other people.
The best thing about Universal’s Diagon Alley is that you truly step into another world. The high buildings of Republic City would allow for that same effect once again.
Universal clearly wants to continue to grow. New intellectual properties is what they do best. I love Skull Island: Reign of Kong, but it’s a D Ticket attraction at best. Mummy is the only Universal branded ride I would consider an E ticket in addition to Hulk, Forbidden Journey and Escape from Gringotts. Maybe Ripsaw. Maybe.
Avatar and Korra actually have more villains to pull from than Harry Potter does. Rather than having the dementors show up LITERALLY EVERYWHERE you could have Equalist chi blockers, Evil Spirits, Firebender soldiers, the Red Lotus members, Fire Lord Ozai, Azula, Kuvira and her metalbenders, or the Colossus.
For anyone who hasn’t seen the shows, all you need is a preshow for one of the rides that states the opening narration from either series and you perfectly have enough of an understanding to enjoy the ride.
Instead of Houses, people would have elements to choose from, prompting a variety of different apparel options to sell.
Guests could also choose merchandise representing their favorite pro-bending teams.
Instead of interactive wands, there could be interactive gloves or bracelets that would allow guests to set off bending effects instead of spell effects.
There is a wide variety of original creatures to make plush versions of. When The Legend of Korra plush were originally released, they sold out almost immediately and were extremely hard to track down.
Kids could get temporary airbender tattoos or Kyoshi Warrior face paint.
Toy versions of Aang’s staff, Korra’s staff, Zuko’s swords, Jet’s swords, Sokka’s sword, Suki’s fans and Asami’s glove would sell incredibly well.
Once Upon a Tee, TeeFury, Ript Apparel, and other similar sites frequently release shirts based on both series and they sell incredibly well.
Searching “Korra” on Etsy brings up 939 results, searching “Avatar: the Last Airbender” brings up 1,300 results. Clearly there is a market, and that’s just handmade stuff.
Distant Horizon has been hosting an Avatar pumpkin carving contest for TWELVE YEARS.
A merchandise line of toys would do well. The only reason the original Avatar toys sold badly was mistakes made on Matel’s part. They refused to release any of the female characters, and instead chose to focus on alternate versions of male characters in outfits that were never in the show, or on minor characters that appeared only once.
They could sell bending scrolls.
Getting your name written in traditional Chinese characters would be a great souvenir.
They could sell pai sho sets.
A pro-bending stunt show could easily become a new, updated combination of The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad Stunt Show and Poseidon’s Fury.
A Spider-man style ride could take guests through Republic City with Team Avatar chasing down Equalists from Book One or dodging spirits and vines, and trying to stop the Colossus from Book Four.
The series style of blending 2D and 3D animation would work perfectly for simulator 3D rides, which is Universal’s wheelhouse.
They could literally make any ride they wanted and present it as Varrick’s newest invention and guests are test piloting it. “ZHU LI, DO THE THING!”
Using the technology of the Raptor Encounter, a flying bison encounter or even a dragon would be possible.
A flying bison aerial carousel, think like Dumbo, would make a terrific family friendly, all ages ride. Islands of Adventure is badly in need of rides without height requirements.
Germany’s Movie Park has a different style of hang gliding attraction.
Movie Land. Photo from Theme Parks of England.
The Aang statue would make a nice addition to the Universal sky line.
Many of the voice actors from both series frequently attend fan events and would be able to reprise their roles.
Unlike the Wizarding World, the aging of the actors would have little effect on the ability to produce more content since it would be all animation.
They could do a metalbending zip line attraction and charge for it as an upgraded experience.
The Jasmine Dragon would make an excellent new restaurant and tea shop.
The score is amazing and would lend itself very well to a theme park environment, and the Track Team would probably return to produce new music.
Omashu slides, anyone?
Penguin sledding flume ride.
Ember Island Players stage show. I’m just saying.
Superman style roller coaster with airbender gliders.
Korra was the first non-heterosexual main character in western animation, as the series concludes with her forming a relationship with Asami. That forward thinking and representation is something the world needs. There was nothing explicit or outright stated about it, and there wouldn’t have to be in a theme park either, but it would be a great first step.
Avatar_Mom is submitting the Avatar Fan Panel to San Diego Comic Con for 2017, for a show that’s been off the air for almost ten years. Fans still show up, at the price of missing other cool SDCC things.
An Avatar Fan Convention has been discussed online and is rumored to be in the works.
The cast and crew behind the show still care and want to be involved. At the Nucleus Art Gallery show, only the creators were confirmed to be there. I encountered Seychelle Gabriel, the voice of Asami, Dee Bradley Baker, the voice of Tarrlok and all the animals on the show, Cora Baker, Dee’s daughter and the voice of young Korra, and Giancarlo Volpe, one of the series directors. So that would eliminate the problem they’ve had with Harry Potter actors not wanting to return.
I have cosplayed Korra at Disney on multiple occasions and Universal on one, each time I have been recognized by Cast Members/Team Members and guests, and have been asked for photos. People recognize the character and get excited. Even people who have never seen the show know it’s Avatar.
I have interacted in character with Disney characters and they got it, and it was pretty much the greatest thing ever.
Unlike blue people Avatar, Korra and Avatar: the Last Airbender have had a lasting presence in pop culture. Even Failbender is better remembered for how terrible it was. “Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked,” is more quoted than anything from that movie.
Verrickland!
Avatar has its own canonical holiday that could be celebrated, Avatar Day is on April 28th as established by the air date of the episode “Avatar Day”.
There are a total of five artbooks with in depth world information to draw from.
Steampunk is all the rage right now and Republic City’s steampunk elements would attract people for photography opportunities.
Avatar: the Last Airbender featured a main character who used her disability to become one of the most powerful benders in the world, and featured a recurring character in a wheelchair.
The Legend of Korra also showed a main character getting critically injured and seeing the character recover from that.
An overturned cabbage cart would be a spectacular photo opportunity.
At the very least, it would have a bigger fan base than Jimmy Fallon.

Disclaimer- If the blog reads poorly, please note I’m dyslexic and struggle with writing. Please take this into consideration.
Research
There are plenty of opportune roles within the video games industry. These include Narrative design, level designers, artistic roles and audio ones. The links show examples of required ability within the specific fields. The artistic roles rely on a strong ability to model and create environmental pieces of work.
Portfolio development is a vital process to getting a good job within the industry. For the premise of artistic designers it is important for the people making the assets to present them in such a manner that shows off the asset without becoming too over exaggerated or too difficult to view. More often than not it is the simplicity to the layout that provides the visual appeal. In terms of a level design placed portfolio, it is more dependent on things like videos and fly through’s that provide visual based evidence. This is a lot more heavy into game design principles and elements that talk about programming and planing. Of course in both of these cases it is still good to show off other work types to show some form of variety.
There are plenty of designers that use engaging portfolios in order to present their work in such a manner. These people all have many different roles within a game like the game designers or the environmental artists. The main ideas behind a level designer include elements regarding level layout and basic features. They essentially are somewhat responsible for fleshing out a level and making it become more recognizable as a game. On the other hand a environment artist is solely in charge of the visual quality to a environment. More often than not the environment artist is responsible for creating in depth art of a level but having almost no effect to any game play elements introduced within the game its self.
My personal job role would be a create role either within the aspect of level design or some form of level editor. Because of the wide variety given to roles like level designer it is hard to substantially say what role exactly I would like. However I do lean more towards the side of narrative level design because of its story aspects to the game. I also have a great love for the story of things and how they can develop into nice and interesting ideas. These ideas can be utilized for developing the story indirectly by making it more fun and exciting to the individual that is playing it.
There are many examples of portfolio design that can be deemed effective or good example either through its design or through the effectiveness of it. http://www.davidshaver.net/. This is a professional game designer who is talking about his work within the video games industry. He is quite well experienced and able to show plenty of examples from AAA games that he has worked on. Although this isn’t the best sort of portfolio it is fairly good and displays many examples of AAA titles. This portfolio is in of its self quite useful as it shows a good example of a distinguished designs portfolio rather than that of a fresh person looking for there first or second job. This portfolio should not really be what I base my initial one around as it is too post junior to be able to realistically compare to my own work.
No the other hand there are also some terrible pieces of portfolios that can pop up around the web. For example http://gustavdahl.net/ is a poorly implemented portfolio in my opinion. It looks very similar to BBC Bite-size, which although a nice website, doesn’t suit the style for a portfolio. The portfolio is quite bland in appearance and doesn’t really look very nice. The layout needs more colour in order to look more appealing and possibly have a easier to access interface. The overall portfolio is quite poor however it does have some nice features like a wide variety of work, including old and new. Although this can have the opposite effect of making the portfolio littered with weak work.
Alternatively there is also a good portfolio that uses plenty of good portfolio development features. For instance comparatively the layout is miles better compared to the bad portfolio. It also has lots of work of which all of them have a nice screenshot.
When I was looking for good examples of narrative games design I came across the game SOMA. This is a horror experience which uses a good use of narrative to make the game an exciting experience. The narrative was quite strong and left the player wanting to understand what exactly was going on. This narrative was a good example of incorporating a linear story into a game. The game although was linear was good as it offered small choices to the player which reminded them of the fact that it is a game and that it is the experience of the player. The progression of the game slowly revealed elements of the story to the player which meant that the players were inclined to complete the game to a finish as they want to learn the story completely.
On an alternate path I have a great deal of respect for games that also have great use of “game design” features for use within them. For example looking at the skill of level design, a great example can be found within the Dark souls games. These games have a great level of design when you consider the amount of looping paths that the creators have. For instance when a player completes one section of the game they more often than not find themselves unable to reach certain areas which appear locked off. However these areas soon become open once the area is completed to allow player to transverse the areas very quickly. This use of game space is very admirable as it makes full use of all the available space. This means that players will often find them selves exploring earlier areas of a level that they weren't able to reach originally.
Another example of purely great game design stands with Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor. This is solely because of the invention of its Nemesis system. This system is system within game that monitors your player characters actions against all other characters within game. For example this system will remember when someone kills you and will remember when you killed them, or if you let them go, or if they let you go etc. This makes the player feel solely responsible for their actions within game. On top of this the player can build a reputation against certain character with both of them exchanging in clashes and fights making the name sake of the nemesis system apparent. This creates such satisfying conflicts between the character and their nemesis resulting in a strange love to hate sensation.
A final type of game that uses both great game design and great narrative design is the game Skyrim. First off Skyrim is an incredibly in depth game with a long amount of play time. Skyrim is a game that gives the player so much content to do that they often will easily muster 100 hours having barely even touched the main story. Certainly from a personal experience I found Skyrim to have so much content that I only completed 2 missions of the main story. On top of this amount of content Skyrim also had 2 full DLC’s released that could add another 50 hours to game giving the player access to new abilities, weapons, quests and even a whole new area to explore. This level of content gives the game a great level of replay ability making someone feel satisfied for the amount of content that they paid for. Skyrim also has a really strong story to present the player with. The contrasting point between initially giving someone enough story to feel intrigued by it whilst also at the same time giving a strong story to the majority of its side quests makes the overall balance of the game worthwhile. On the whole why Skyrim appeals to me is its overall contrast of well balancing of all the features within game. Even the elements of the game that feel weaker, for instance semi repetitive combat, all are done well enough that it still feels genuine as a game and is strong nevertheless.
There are a good few examples of video game designers and the products that they make. One good Designer is Todd Howard, who is known for making the Modern Fallout game series and the Elder scrolls titles. The Fallout series is incredibly popular among fans and Todd Howard did this when he first created Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is often considered a masterpiece among developers as a top quality game, Skyrim as well is also a top quality game that has award winning quality’s. These games are both excellent examples of games that I would love to work on because they are excellent and extensive games.
Good design can also be achieved by Companies that strive to try and create interesting games. For example Nintendo are a very good games company that are highly successful company responsible for so many great different games. They have made games like Zelda and Mario, which are both cult classics of games design. The Mario icon is one of the most well know franchises on the planet. The Mario games all use great iconic characters like Toad, peach, Luigi and Mario himself. The success of Nintendo should be definitely noted, as they have made many successful games that all have good design choices either through elements of game play or story. Particularly with older Mario titles that use simple game play in an effective way.
