writing hera on and off for like 10 years but only now learning what she ACTUALLY likes and not what she *says* she likes ajdbrhai

Here are some new discoveries!

Fav color - copper pink (she was Def surprised to know she likes pink lol) before she would say her fav color is black. I think she'd struggle with this a lot! Mainly bc bailey's favorite color is pink, so she'd think she likes it bc bailey likes it! But she'll figure it out!

She likes learning - never rly given the chance to continue her education and considering herself a "failure" rly poisoned learning for hera. But with encouragement (and money) she'd find she'd love learning new things! After getting her GED she'd get her college degree. She'd definitely be changing her major A LOT but eventually would settle on art history. She'd find herself really drawn to art and expression, but even more in history and she always wanted to be that person who can look at a piece, and tell you the story beneath its surface (like herself!) Without encouragement though, hera would be really defiant to learning. She just thinks of herself as stupid and it's a wall she's built and is really just hurting herself with really.

sketching and poetry. she'll really enjoy them and finds that she's actually pretty good at both! (Sketching would be a big surprise talent for her tbh)

Culinary Art - this one I kinda knew! But especially more knowing how much she will love art and creating something beautiful. She already loves to cook, but now she feels she gets to tell a story and draw a picture on a plate

Hosting and party planning - this plays a little on her control issues lol but she loves to be in control! She can't help it! Let her boss ppl around and plan the perfect party or something. It's also kinda still a service for someone bc she'll work so hard for the happiness of someone else. But she'd truly enjoy it

Reading - this also kinda goes with her learning thing. She never picked it up as a hobby due to convincing herself shes not smart enough to be a book person (wtf kind of thought is that hera? but whatever...i just write her ok lol) but she also hasnt rly tried to read for enjoyment before (kids bookd? Ofc). She'd love crime mysteries, Gothic classics and rly steamy romance novels lol

(I did the same in high school on a smaller scale.) Ironically, I think my theatre degree involved more writing than my creative writing degree.

Dream job? I do not dream of labor. jk jk lol. but i've been actively evaluating how my concept of work and jobs and how it's so very directly attached to who you know or are adjacent to because there's so many niche industries and abilities and how versatile humans are and anyone can do anything if they want to and invest their time/effort/energy. (like who you know + your specific experiences, not in a Networking way, but just. a not knowing what you don't know way.) i want to do anything/everything which is my primary strugglebus re: Future Thoughts. Horse stance. THIS BITCH DESERVES THE TOP SPOT SO HERE GOES. I somehow did not make this connection until like I’m almost all the way through the book, but 扎马步 (zhā mǎ bù) or if you take the literal meaning of characters “poke horse step” is literally so well known it’s insane. I’m talking one of the first training/fighting stance that comes to a Chinese person’s mind when u mention kung fu/combat training in general well known so I rly dunno how it slipped my mind for an entire book

this particular stance is always a lil funny to me bc of the way it’s phrased in Chinese; with the 扎 “poke”, the intention is to convey a planting & sinking, steadying of the stance that’s just also funny af to me

so imagine sth u find a lil silly & funny fully becoming a flirtatious & romantic code specific to the main characters of the story? hilarity ensued; rip my friend who had to listen to my scream-laughing

Jianzhu, the architect, his name is literally pinyin for building (建筑 jiàn zhù); imagine naming ur kid Building Smith. No wonder he’s such an uptight type A

the name of Jesa’s (Kyoshi’s mom) sky bison, Longyan / 龙眼 (lóng yǎn), while directly translates to “dragon eye”, also happens to be the Chinese word for Longan fruit (which like Lychee, has cloudy, white/clear-ish flesh surrounding a dark, round pit)

Rangi’s name in the Chinese translation of the book is 燃姬 (rán jī), which itself is a basic sound translation, but these characters mean “lady on fire” or “burning lady” this is kinda cute as heck 4 me for some reason????? lil furnace lady Rangi makes me soft

…that brings us to Rangi’s mom Hei-Ran, someone who we know can be cold and calloused in getting sh*t done with some shady days in the academy, & her name may reflect that. her name could be these two characters 黑燃 (hēi rán), which translates to “black burn” or “dark burn”. talk abt obvious characteristic here; nothing more obvious than ur name amirite???

…then again it could also be 黑兰 (hēi lán, “Black Orchid”) which tbh I kinda like better bc it’s more likely to be used as a name; AGAIN, no one wants to name their kid “black burn” it really doesn’t sound as cool as you’d think

SO! After clues from the comments (thank u @taare-writes!) and help I outsourced from TikTok — Hei-Ran’s name actually could be 혜란 in Korean !! also when I put this in the translator I used, the corresponding Mandarin it gave me was 蕙兰 (hùi lán), which is a specific type of orchid (boat orchid I believe?) and SUCH A PRETTY NAME oh my

the term used for the outlaws daofei, is literally just 盗匪 (dào fěi) “thieves/bandits”; this especially tickles my friend (who’s also reading these novels) so I gotta include it for her ;))))

the daofei’s secret gathering spot next to a lake in the mountains, Hujiang, could be 湖江 (hú jiāng) “lake river” or 湖将 (hú jiāng) which if u squint at it could mean “just by the lake”. this is fun bc it’s possible the author just flipped the saying 江湖 (jiāng hú), which while directly translates to “river lake”, has a much broader & meaningful use often in 武侠 (wǔ xiá, if u know u know, but if u don’t you can think of it as samurai or traveling knight but CHINESE) lore: it is used to refer to the world of action, thrills, and adventure walked by these warriors. It’s p cool to me lmao

oh and the Lei Tai the daofei’s fight on? Just 擂台 (lèi tái) “fighting stage”, same thing as the ring in boxing but doesn’t only reference one specific type of fight

Yun’s name is p simple & straight forward, probably just 云 (yún, “cloud”); it’s also an actual last name and I know someone from Highschool with this last name :)))

While Kyoshi obviously has Japanese origins, the kanji corresponding to きょし is 虚子. Japanese kanji have their origins in Chinese characters, and in this case these two kanji can mean “child of the void” (虚 xū “the void / the lack of something” 子 zǐ “child / kid”); pretty fucking metal name if u ask me

Lao Ge, the human alias of the bloodthirsty spirit in Kyoshi’s gang, could just be 老哥 (lǎo gē) “old brother” which is equivalent of just bro

… it’s real name, Tieguai, could be 铁怪 (tiě guài) “iron monster” or 铁拐 (tiě guǎi) “iron crutch”, which both kinda make sense??? given its monstrous tendencies and ancient origins

the green emerald burial sword Tagaka carried with her, jian, literally is just 剑 (jiàn) “sword”. Yes they really went you know what? we gon call it a sword sword

speaking of weapons, the dao broadsword? same thing. 刀 (dāo) literally means “broadsword”. broadsword broadsword hehe

what I find interesting abt this whole weapons naming is that technically when u picture a broadsword, it falls under the umbrella classification of sword (can someone who’s first culture ain’t Chinese confirm this??? thanks); though for Chinese ppl, 剑 (jiàn, “sword”) and 刀 (dāo, “broadsword”) are completely different beasts

basically dao & jian to us r like tigers and wolves when broadswords & swords r like tigers and lions (both in the felidae family)

where this info kinda becomes relevant is bc knives are also translated as 刀 (yeah the one for “broadsword”), and the way ppl know which type of sharp instrument you mean depends on the context. if ur carrying ur dao on ur back (like in the novels) it’s broadsword; if ur looking for a dao to prep dinner with it’s probably a knife unless u really have the urge to chop spinach with a broadsword

the Yellow Scarf’s imprisoned (later freed then dropped) leader, Xu Ping An, has a weirdly ironic name; his name is likely 许平安 (xǔ píng ān), “wish for peace”. 许 (xǔ) can mean “making a wish” & is an actual Chinese last name; 平安 (píng ān) “peace” on the other hand can be & have been used as a name

slight tangent: there’s this Chinese tradition of including undesired characteristics in ur child’s name so they could avoid those things in life I know it’s probably not the tradition mom&dad Xu had in mind when they named him but it did kinda take effect

the design of Govener Te’s mansion complex, the traditional earth kingdom siheyuan design that Rangi mentioned? It’s an actual traditional courtyard’d household design. I’m not the expert on this but if ur interested u can just search siheyuan and read more abt it ! v fascinating

四合院 (sì hé yuàn) roughly translates to “four enclosing yard”, referring to how the structure of this type of housing consists of four sections of single floor housing (each a specific functional space) enclosing an exposed courtyard in the middle. You can still find some of these in Beijing; also these houses go for SO MUCH MONEY on the housing market bc 1. it’s p much a suburb home but in the city 2. CITY LAND 3. homes r just insanely expensive in a city like Beijing. so there’s a running joke that you’d say someone’s well-off by saying their family has a siheyuan

the dragonfly analogy regarding to geto’s response to gojo, who was shown wearing a dragonfly patterned yukata in HI arc,, i’m trying to not think abt the fact that dragonfly symbolized victory in jpn....pain. i quoted from a web here for more explanation : In Japan the dragonfly is known as the "victory insect", or kachimushi, because of its hunting prowess and also because it is known to never retreat. Dragonflies are agile and fast fliers and can even hover, but never fly backwards

peace and peace of mind. inspiration hits me when i watch movies or shows, or listen to music. but motivation comes to me when i know i'm not about to be bothered and when i have finished everything else on my to-do list. my mind just feels So Free 😌😌

7. early influences on your writing

i really didn't use to read a lot of books as a kid. the earliest books i could ever remember going on a reading spree on were Harry Potter, Cecelia Ahern books, The Hunger Games, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, etc. didn't get to read a lot of classics either. most of my writing has been influenced by stuff i read from ff.net... largely by Cynchick who is rly the main reason i prefer to write novel-esque fics (and a huge reason i ship DeiSaku so effin hard).

(ok my brain is on overdrive from 2 cups of coffee n i read these two questions two ways so imma give two answers each lmaooo)

15. hardest verse to write

• fandom-wise: anything Real Life. i will Die before I write about real people (bands, groups, artists, youtubers, etc.) • AU-wise: Regency AU adhfkhdf i know i started hand & heart and damn it is challenging bc the amount of research i actually had to do for that!! i'm still tryna wrap my head around the lords and barons even tho i'm p much not gonna use em much

16. easiest verse to write

• fandom-wise: naruto is def the easiest for me to write. i started watching at like 10 or 12?? began writing for it a year or two later. i've read so many fics of it that i feel like i know the universe inside out (even though a huge chunk of the naruto content in my head is non-canon) • AU-wise: Modern AUs. canon-verse feels kinda natural as well unless i have to write a fight scene... which would mostly just be comprised of "back hit the wall" and "avoided just in time"

Fics I Wanted To Write This Year But Didn't, Part 2: Star Trek AU

Now I suppose these would have been several fics, but in a series or a collection as they're all about the same main storyline: The collapsing of a (or several) universe(s).

If you've known me for a while, you know that I am very into Multiverse Theory, both real life and fictional, and Star Trek with the Mirror Universe is of course one of the first fandoms that comes to mind for me to write my batshit ideas in xD

Basically, in my personal little (fictional, bc I know and understand 0 about real life physics or whatever would be relevant for this) multiverse theory, there are an infinite number of universes, evenly spread around the multiverse, and a new universe comes into existence when a timeline/universe (same thing) can go into 2 seperate ways naturally, or when there is timetravel involved to manually change a timeline: The original timeline won't be affected, you can't change what's already there, but a new changed timeline will be created.

Now, in some cases that works out well, with the timetraveller ending up in the new timeline and never knowing that their original universe is still out there- in other ways of time travelling, not so much. If the person trying to make a change manages to do just that but never notices, because they or a version of them is stuck in the orginal timeline, what do they do?

Try again, with the same result, many many times.

And that's where it gets problematic, because the multiverse gets unbalanced, and whether you see it as a sentient entity connected to the Qs in Star Trek or just as something that Works That Way automatically: the multiverse doesn't want to be out of balance, so the new universes start to collapse in on each other, creating a Splitter-verse and leaving its inhabitants to a fate arguably worse than death (in this fictional world): they completely stop to exist. This doesn't just affect the new universes but the surroundings ones, which would have split earlier and are already more different from each other, too, to make sure the one that was the cause for it all falls, too.

Now (of course, because I can't help myself) this would be part of @thelucyverse , with there being Central people trained in spotting such time anomalies before it is too late, but with there also being time-bombs (yeah hahah) created in inter-universal wars to create smaller, controlled splitter-verses (I say small and controlled here but like. We're still talking about entire universes), and with Central having back-up plans to get people out of the 'verses, in order as follows: anyone visibly IDing as Central (the organisation is still largely volunteer-based, shit's got to have some perks), then everyone whose energy indicates recent travel in-between universes, as these are also most likely to a) be Central and b) be okay in a new 'verse, after that, if there is still time and anyone willing to go back into the falling universe, children as they are also more likely to adapt in a new world. If there is enough warning, they also get out whoever people Central members want to have saved, but usually it just turns into whoever stands close enough to grab and get the hell out of there.

Whether taking people out of a universe against their will is a good thing or nah is ...debatable and still being debated amongst those who do it and those who think that taking someone away from the possibility of dying death in their own universe is vile (as amongst most religions, it is thought that you can only reach the same afterlife as those who died in the same umiverse- but again most also think that there probably won't even Be an afterlife in a splitter-verse).

Sometimes, people are also pushed out of the universe by the explosion itself, but they then tend to die upon impact as they seldomly end up exactly at the coordinates where they left, which leaves them either suffocating in hard matter or in space.

Anyhow! To Star Trek... and I suppose this is now SPOILERS not rly for any Star Trek canon but for these fanfics, if I do end up writing them!

I tend to forget which characters are canon and which are complete OCs because I spend Way more hours on tumblr and ao3 + thinking about my own headcanons than I spend consuming the original media, but I am fairly certain a canon Joana McCoy, daughter of Leonard 'Bones' McCoy exists? If no and I stole the idea from sb else's fanfic I am sincerely sorry. Gotta look that up.

In one universe close to what would be the centre of the splitterverse, Joana- as a young child nicknamed 'Jojo', but now as a young teen trying to get rid of the childish nickname- has a younger part-vulcan girl as a friend, and this girl, nicknamed Aka, has, through having sticky fingers and connections to Central, a device that allows you to jump between universes. She's used it before and gotten into a lot of trouble for it, but to her it had always been great fun- until reality is starting to collapse around them while she is visiting Joana, and Joana is the only person she can reach in time and take with her to the next universe.

Distraught, the children are left in a new world, debating what to do, waiting for Central to contact them, hoping that they saved their families- but of course, Central has quite some different problems right now and won't contact them any time soon, and even if they did it wouldn't be with news of their parents: the adult families of non-Central members who only happened to have jumped between universes before themselves are really not the top priority, and the universe is collapsing too quickly to even get down the prio list to 'children',

Aka wants to leave the universe again and look for Central elsewhere, hoping that her moving around will attract their attention. Joana has enough from universe jumps for a lifetime. Thus, they part ways.

While Aka at some point does run into a group of Central troubeshooters who more or less adopt her as one of their own and teach her how to work their equipment and use magic and weapons and starships (not what a child her age should be learning. But then, none of the adults there ever signed up to be a parent, so who's to blame them), Joana goes looking for her family in this world.

Now I could write entire novels about Akas adventures and how it may or may not be healthy to not have a home at all and decide to not rely on anybody instead of either finding new versions of her original parents or letting someone new into her life properly (spoileralert: it isn't healthy at all), and how meeting a girl from one of the original splitter-verses (the not bombed ones) telling her not to make the same mistakes she made finally makes her think about her choices and and and, but this post is already going to be Long so I won't. That would all be a seperate fanfic anyways.

Joana finds a girl her age who looks just like her and acts almost exactly like her, too- the only difference seems to be that there's no Aka around, which made this version of her less used to adventure but also less wary of it.

The version of Joana from this universe- she decides to call herself Joan when they are alone, while the Joana we already know goes with 'Jojo'- her once loathed childhood nickname now a connection to her past- is thrilled to meet her and begs her to stay, I mean what is cooler than suddenly having a twin, and won't it be fun there is so much they can do! As their parents are seperated, they manage to spend their time mostly at one of their homes, either together when the parent is too busy to notice that there are two kids around, or one at each place, guessing correctly that if the parents were to talk about it, they wouldn't even think of the possibility of there being two children and instead just get mad at each other.

This goes on for a few months during the summer, with Jojo feeling vaguely guilty both to her original dead parents and these new ones who think that she is their real daughter, and the girls are just deciding about what to do when school starts again when-

Reality breaks apart around them.

Jojo clings to Joan in fear, and- as Jojo is now on the list of people who have travelled between universes in the past, she is saved by Central, and Joan with her. They are placed into a universe further away this time, a safe distance to the only slowly contained Splitters.

Meanwhile, in the same universe, two people were currently out on a space-walk: Michael Burnham and Philippa Georgiou.

They are thrown out of the universe in the explosion, and as they are wearing their suits, they survive as they end up somewhere in space again, but- they don't end up in the same universe. Michael ends up about 20-30 years earlier in a universe further away, and she doesn't even end up in what would've been federation space in her old 'verse. Philippa is only thrown one universe to the left and picked up by Central. As Central likes to name their acquaintances in some way that makes it easier to identify just which version of a person you are talking to without having to add the long universe number (even harder when the universe was destroyed and there isn't a known number), they ask Philippa to pick a new name. She is way too rattled and desperate to go looking for Michael as quickly as possible to care about what name she is supposed to have, so she goes with the first option given to those who don't have their own nickname ideas: lastname for firstname, making her Georgiana, short Gia.

Through Central, she finds out that the universal explosion left her and Michael connected- but it won't be much help in the search, basically just a way to say 'alright this verse is closer to it than that one', it's still trial and error... (I could also involve some body switching here, idk I already wrote a long fanfic with that trope in the Andromaquynh fandom, but I happen to Like that trope so yeah maybe I'll recycle some parts of In Your Stead if I ever do manage to write this Milippa story. Which, btw, if not already obvious, would again be a seperate fic from the Joana universal-sister story. On the other hand, Aka runs into Georgiana a lot, even calling her 'auntie Gia').

Meanwhile, Michael doesn't have to jump through universes but make her way through just the one universe to get to federarion space. Except what she find's isn't the federation at all... you guessed it, the 'verse she ended up in is more similar to a mirrorverse than to Prime. However, the Georgiou of this world isn't the emperor yet, she's young and Michael is able to influence her enough over the years so that she turns her back to the Empire.

Yes, it takes years for Michael and Gia to find their way back to each other, maybe decades... they also wouldn't have spent exactly the same amount of time apart as they aren't in the same 'verse. In fact, Cleo of Central carefully tells Gia that Michael might have died by now, but of course Georgiana doesn't want to hear this.

Michael and that universe's Georgiou also get quite close, though Michael doesn't want to cheat on her Philippa... of course, after years of this, she might think that she will never see Philippa again... (We are approaching ot3 territory here lol, and I don't even want to think about the potential of ot7 with the two canon mirror and prime versions adsfghjkl because if I finish this story here, I would 100% write a lil fix it where Central! Gia Mikay and Phil go fish Mirror! Michael and Georgiou out of a splitter-verse into the next prime verse in which Michael already knows that Georgiou... and ad they're already at it they also get half dead! Prime Philippa away from the Klingons... heheh sounds like the kind of poly chaos I would enjoy writing, but sadly I have to make it through all the Plot first)

Anyway! Back to Jojo and Joan: they decide that while they maybe should have told Joan's family about Jojo's existence soon if they had stayed in that 'verse, the initial idea of staying with one's universals wasn't so bad, so they go looking for this universe's Joana McCoy. The girl- (nicknamed Anna, which makes Joan decide to change hers from Joan to June because she doesn't want to be half Jojo and half Anna), is happy enough to meet them, but often feels left out from the other two as they act as if they've known each other forever even though of course it's only been a few months... In turn, Jojo and June aren't sure whether Anna really wants them around, whether she might think they're trying to steal her life and family from her...

Lots of potential for conflict! Yay! XD would of course come to a happy ending, with at least Bones accepting his three daughters, dunno yet whether they'd tell the mom... also Aka ends up in the same universe at some point, together with a version of her vulcan birthmother who she had never known the original version of but now gets along with alright... oh and if I do write aforementioned Milippa ot7 bullshitery, this would also be the Prime!verse for that, so all stories in the series or collection interconnect again!

this got... long... and I could obviously go on but I need to go back to writing my Bachelor thesis :(

i loved reading & the way it made me feel & how it let me go on adventures even when i was sick & stuck in a hospital bed & i wanted to give other people that experience.

yesss. i first decided i wanted to be a writer when i was like,,, uhhhh. i was in 3rd grade so around like, 7? 8? p damn young.

& i started actually writing at like 11, though i had written sporadically before that.

haha. yes & no.

the first novel i sat down & tried to write was about gryphon riders & it TOTALLY wasn’t a ripoff of my favorite book at the time (Eragon)

but before that, i had written & illustrated my own book about a dog superhero; & had also turned an old horse calander into a story.

okay i actually read like. these books when i was younger about like. kids who played sports (there was a series about baseball i read bc. they were there?) & while i don’t think it’s a genre exactly it isn’t my favorite no.

my least favorite is probably like. horror?? like. i enjoy some horror things every now and again but most of it is too much for me. same for crime fiction/thrillers. & i don’t like romance that ends with one or both people dying?? & tragedies in general.

6. What’s your biggest strength as a writer?

i’m flattered! i’d say character voice & dialogue? maybe description. (which used to be my big weakness but i worked rly hard at it!)

pacing; fight/action scenes; & high emotional scenes.

that is correct. mainly though i’m working on the revision for the martyr queen & my short story collection.

to that life decisions thing...it really sucks we have to figure out this early what we want and what we don't want. Technically anyone could, for example, drop out of college at any time, change their plans and do something completely different. i need to know this, Top 5 books? You have good taste and know your thing so I'll probably add them to my 'must read' list.

uuuuuhhhhhh i haven’t read a lot lately lmao im very tired. i just bought a hardcover copy of Patrick rothfuss’s the name of the wind which i lové for certain reasons & dislike for others. haven’t read it in ages tho so i will stick w love. the way he writes abt things like music is kinda spectacular & he embeds magic into the everything & i love the idea of this very subjective narrator & I think it’s clever. haven’t read the others yet tho.i Loved illuminae i thought it was gripping & brilliant & FUN. the format of it is brilliant & again, a rly fun play with narrator!!! it’s a space opera & it’s het but i Loved them so that was awesome . again, haven’t had time to read the sequel. the protagonist is this COOL girl so major propsskulduggery pleasant is a rly cool series abt magic & modern day world & its rly funny & a bit darker (esp as the series goes on) but the author has this impeccable grasp on the type of humour i rly enjoy & also like a cool quick pace i try to work into my own stuff bc it’s brisk & has just enough detail to be Gripping but not enough for waffling on & being exhausting. the main character is a girl too so once again huge props . as is a recurring theme i have not finished the series lmao but i think my bro has & he enjoyed it tooim trying rly hard to think abt any books at all lmao im sorry these aren’t necessarily my faves bc what a Difficult thing to dookay number four let’s see,,,oh obernewtyn!! i haven’t finished the SERIES surprise surprise 🙄🙄🙄bUt it’s a post nuclear apocalyptic world where some ppl have developed powers & naughty children & kids they suspect of having powers are sent to a place called obernewtyn officially to keep everyone safe unofficially to experiment on them & basically this kid elspeth accidentally becomes the leader of a revolution & it’s so cool & i love it & the author is aussie & it’s also disappointingly het but she’s a very cool main character. it’s in first person too which can be rly interesting & an unreliable narrator which AGAIN is a THEME apparently (who knew???)ok fifth book let’s see. I’ve talked ur ears off abt Tamora Pierce in heaps of posts so i won’t include her even tho I love her books (& I Have finished those series lmao!!) since you’re interested in it you probably already know a bit about nanowrimo. nano is short for national novel writing month and takes place in the month of november. its a world-wide event (and supports non-english participation) and the goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. the point of it is to show that anyone -- anyone, even ppl with kids and full-time jobs -- can write a novel if they have the motivation and the inspiration. ive done nanowrimo off and on since 2007 and ive written a couple of fics during that time. since fic is basically a form of fiction writing, which is nanowrimo’s focus, writing a fic is not that much different from writing original fiction like most nanowrimo participants. in fact, nanowrimo encourages it. that said this advice may feel a bit generalized but hopefully theres smth here that will serve you well on your fic-writing endeavors!

if you want to participate you should first and foremost sign up on the website. it provides participants tools to help them along the way, like word counter, pep talks by published authors, forums and groups where you can discuss issues and find solutions, and prizes for finishing. it’s 1000% worth signing up, but the website does get rly slow during november (shocker) so make sure you are uploading your word count and your fic to the website as regularly as possible. anyway, use the website to your advantage! there are groups for practically every area, and the group leaders offer meet-ups, write-ins, and even just advice and support if you’re not into meeting up with strangers lol. 

here’s more about nanowrimo and how it works.

when it comes to writing i think the most important thing for nano participants in general to learn is to not go back and edit your work while nano is happening. i’m someone who edits as they go so this was rly difficult for me to do, but editing during nano takes up precious time and sometimes stops the flow of writing, which defeats the purpose of nano. go back when it’s all done and then you can edit the whole thing more coherently. sometimes the pressure of making word count means what we write doesn’t always make the most sense; editing later should help smooth that over, but that also means you shouldn’t try to post your fic during this time either.

it’s also really helpful to write down some ideas before you start. i’m not sayin you need like a full outline or that you need to know exactly where your fic is going, but it’s good to have a general inkling of what you want to do for when you need it. my first time doing nano i had signed up like the day before bc i forgot abt it and i had no idea what i was doing. my story ended with like 20,000 words still left to write, and since i never sat down and thought abt what i wanted to accomplish it ended up being rly stressful. i still managed to finish but you could tell the story was disjointed lmao. so i think having a general idea of what direction you want to go with your fic is ideal, and writing down some scene ideas or dialogue that interests you or even quotes for inspiration would be beneficial. also know it’s okay to change things up if you feel you need to; you’re not confined to what you wanted to do at the beginning. write down everything you’re thinking prior to starting!

i also kept meticulous track of where i was in relation to where i needed to be. motivation and inspiration can be fickle fiends; some ppl prefer to get their 1667 words down each day like clockwork, and others fluctuate with dips and highs in their daily word counts. mark your calendar with your word count goals if it helps. use the nano website to your advantage -- there’s a lot of help there, a lot of experienced writers with advice. make playlists with different moods so you can find the right vibe you need to write. and since you’re writing fic, use your fic community as a motivational tool. your followers, writer peers, and friends are at your disposal. keep yourself accountable by blogging abt it, even if it’s just a brief progress post. know where you’re at every day.

4- i feel bad when my classmates think im someone who studies and works hard bc i rly. only ever do the bare minimum. i could probably do better if i worked harder, but i just have a lot of academic Traumas. underperforming is such a hairpin trigger for my anxiety (prolly what made me go spiraling down this semester), and i know its a lot worse if its something i worked too hard for, so i try to keep things at a safe level, where i can brush my failures off as easily as i can and move on

5- i, too, am a hufflepuff and im proud of it :3

6- im a rly hard person to deal w. idk how to keep in contact w people, i tend to isolate myself (even from people who live under the same roof as me lol) and i take so long to open myself and anyone who manages to make through my initial awkwardness is honestly a champ. in turn, everyones a hard person for me to deal w, practically LKAJSDHAKJD i feel immediately uncomfortable if a person doesnt smile around me much (i automatically decide they must hate me lmao) and i police myself a lot in fear that ill say something stupid thatll upset people. thankfully, i dont miss people all that much LOL im cool w 3 or 4 friends. 

7- i, too, am a cat person KLASDJAKJ ill die for cats

8- im rly careless w my health and its honestly a miracle im still alive and w no life-disrupting illnesses for now since i never go to the doctor lmao things will prolly look ugly for me in 5 to 10 years but if anything i dont drink or smoke so yay?

9- i got into a fair bit of fights as a kid bc of how hot blooded i was (funnily enough, i only ever got into fights w boys. only once i fought w another girl). and im an angry crier so i always ended up crying it was rly wild. im still quite hot blooded and rly cant take too much provocation before i want to punch a person in the face, but i have rly good control now lmao

10- i still cant believe ive been consistently writing a fanfic for almost 7 months and its got 128k as of now. its already surpassed the first long novel i read as a kid (harry potter and the chamber of secrets). its my second language and even when i wrote in portuguese i never got this far. how.

i have this friend who says repeatedly to me, that the first time they saw my art in class they thought if anybody would make it in the industry it’d be me, and they really love my art and apparently show it off to others, and its so flattering and cute but i keep wondering if they mean it or they say that to everybody, and i ask them that but they keep saying otherwise, and its nice how they are ok with me doubting them and continuously reassure me otherwise

and i’m not actually that good, like i’m really not good, i’m p bad and v behind on experience due to (((( loss of limb movements because my health sucks ))))((every day i can hold a pencil is a blessing and i get really happy and overwhelmed.......but ye i’m....not good and have little experience so i’m trying to desperately catch up))

anyways i’m just going on and on because i’m rly suicidal right now and i’m distracting myself with something positive. but also i what my friend would think if i just died instead of Making It in the art business. should i actually try to keep going or? but also i should stop...living for others... i don’t rly know what i’m writing right now. they’re a cute friend. art school is fun and its a good time and i’m making friends and people like me and they like my art and for a few days in the week i’m constantly not at home which is great and my life is rly good rn

and i’m just wondering if i should force myself to keep living bc my friends and i want to live in an apartment together and it actually sounds kinda doable...and i found an apartment i could afford from my government money...its cheap and ok and good and . i mean i can’t ?? go?? most likely but

and idk idc anymore about hiding it, i live in an abusive and violent home and i want out. but i also want to die so maybe i should stay in this violent home for the possibility of being killed bc i don’t care anymore if i die from murder. i can’t just leave my home either bc they have my documents locked up. i also don’t know how to cook + clean, basic living stuff bc they wanted me to stay forever and i wasn’t allowed to learn and am scared to at this rate;;;;;; 

i keep telling myself that i haven’t been abused in a year so i should stop complaining then i force myself to remember that i was molested everyday for two months less than half a year ago (since it started) so maybe i am being abused, i don’t know, some of my friends are concerned about what my parents are doing to me & how they’re raising me but idk man

i literally tell my friends to not say anything bad in the car when they’re driving us bc they will become physically violent while driving and will punch you and beat you while holding the wheel and we will die, and they will, on a whim, force us into a double suicide, so we gotta keep our mouths shut and be Good Kids

if u make them angry in the car they will cause a car accident and i have solutions to staying safe in the car but it only goes so far and getting driven to school is scary and cars are scary business

like idk i cant even tell when somebody is trying to murder me bc i literally am Not Here. i told my doctor last week A Thing, and she said “hey this is murder and you can’t tell bc u were also dissociating during the attempt murder” 

so i just...alright, this is why i’m dissociating all the time ok

but also making a book would be good!!!! i want to have my art in a book how cool would that be...illustrating a book......or maybe a graphic novel or comic book........that would be so cool. but i also rather just die. i’m indecisive

anyways i was walking w/ my friend to their apartment & this guy came & we thought we’d be stabbed and i was honestly gonna let them stab me but my friend was there & i didn’t wanna traumatize them so i didn’t?? anyways he didn’t pull out a knife but he did offer us some drugs, which i regret bc i have no tolerance. but also it was just weed and i don’t think anybody ODs on weed
