#and Joan Jett as the older musician

I’ve have a Benatar family headcannon 🤓
I feel like Benatar would’ve been the youngest of 3 siblings, the oldest being his brother, Cliff. And the middle one being his sister, Joan (both named after famous musicians, Cliff burton and Joan Jett)
His brother is a stereotypical older brother, picking on Benatar but still bonding with him occasionally. Joan is nice and nurturing to Benatar but more distant, she likes her alone time.
Cliff played guitar and Joan did keyboard. at some point their dad told Cliff and Joan to teach Benatar guitar and keyboard (His dad taught them how to play, couldn’t be bothered teaching another kid)
So Cliff gave Benatar an old epiphone SG and gave him a book of guitar tabs and wished him luck. Joan gave him her old Casio keyboard and stayed with him to teach him the basics.
Then their parents divorced so Joan and Benatar moved with their mum to America but Cliff stayed with his dad so cliff is just a rude bastard now
I READ ALLAT
That’s so real I ❤️ Joan

Joan Jett’ing Into Modern Music and Gender Standards
Who comes to mind when you think of a female figure who is tough, tranquil, influential, and confident? Maybe Michelle Obama? Beyonce? How about Joan Jett? You have likely heard her song “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” one of America’s favorite sing-along choruses and an anthem of female independence as said by both writers Patton and O'Mera. The song's central message is about a woman expressing her love for rock and roll music, which has been traditionally seen as a male-dominated genre.
The lyrics describe a woman who is self-assured, dancing to her own beat and unapologetically enjoying herself as Jett sings in full force “And I could tell it wouldn't be long, 'Til he was with me, yeah, me, singin' I love rock n' roll”. In these lyrics, Jett is taking control of her situation, wants, and desires. Throughout the music video, Jett maintains eye contact with the camera as she engages in traditionally male activities, asserting herself while declaring her passion for the music and the culture surrounding it, within this androcentric world. Since the release of the cover, Jett has mentored and encouraged many young female musicians to create a space for themselves, one of which is modern pop icon, Miley Cyrus.
In the year 1975, at the age of 15, Joan Jett started a rock and roll band with five tough-looking females, who were ready to give it their all on stage. They went by the name The Runaways. Sound familiar? The story of Joan Jett and The Runaways is one of perseverance and love for music.
The all-female teenage rock band was often overshadowed by the way they were over-sexualized by the media and public. The band members often dressed in tight and revealing clothing and performed songs with suggestive lyrics. When first trying to embrace their sexuality and twist gender cliches, the public was not responding to their efforts in the way they had intended, with 99 percent of the audience being men as stated by Harrington in Joan Jett, Rocking to Runaway Success. They were often referred to as "jailbait rockers," and there were rumors of them being involved in sexual relationships with older men in the music industry. In No Angel — Just a Survivor of the Runaways, a memoir written by Cherie Currie, the lead vocalist of the Runaways during their early years, talks about how the public was focused on the Runaways' appearance and sexuality rather than their music. These rumors were often perpetuated by the media and led to the band being seen as more of a novelty act than a serious rock band.
Underappreciated for their musical talent, Joan Jett and her bandmates began to dress in more subversive and revolutionary ways as a means of expressing their rebellion and non-conformity. Their clothing and style were inspired by punk and glam rock, with tight leather pants, ripped shirts, and heavy makeup. Their image was a deliberate attempt to shock and challenge the conservative mainstream, and to assert their own independence and individuality. This shock factor was effective, yet led to more scrutiny and speculation about their sexual orientation and whether they were deliberately using their image to appeal to a queer audience. In Creem Magazine in March 1977, titled Joan Jett: Fantasy Girl of Rock & Roll, Robinson asks Jett if she's a lesbian due to her actions and choice of attire. Jett responded by saying “I'm not going to say I'm not and I'm not going to say I am” staying privet about her personal life.
Jett's raw, guitar-driven sound and disruptive style have been a major influence on Miley Cyrus. Many of her singles have incorporated elements of Jett's sound into her music, including heavy guitar riffs and anthemic choruses. In Cyrus’s last album, Plastic Hearts, she revisits the punk-rock scene of the late 70s, and even features Jett on the album in her song “Bad Karma”.  Back in 2015, as an up-and-coming young artist, she had the opportunity to perform with Jett on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Cyrus recalls her heart-to-heart with Jett after the show, recalling the desire to be present at the moment, and the willingness to take in everything the punk star had said to her. Cyrus admitted that she carefully studied her mentor in order to mimic her iconic style, sound, and influence, in an effort to rewind the clock. Cyrus achieves this by revisiting the sound, and attitude that Jett had pioneered in the 1970s. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus said, "I'm not trying to replicate her or be her, but we're big on studying all of our idols. I really wanted to show the audience that I have Joan's back and that she has mine." This shows that Cyrus was intentional in reviving Jett's style in order to pay homage to Jett's revolutionary stride as a female in the music industry, as they both support and uplift one another.
Jett was known for defying traditional gender roles and often wore clothing that was seen as provocative or unconventional for a woman at the time. Jett was also known for wearing corsets, which accentuated her figure and added to her sexually-charged image. These types of clothing helped to contribute to Jett's image as a gender-nonconforming and sexually-liberated rock star who defied traditional gender roles. Jett and The Runaways' image was about empowerment and rebellion, and their use of provocative clothing was meant to challenge societal norms and expectations of women in the music industry. Cyrus emulating Joan Jett's style can be seen in her performance at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Her outfit and stage presence were reminiscent of Jett's punk rock style and she performed "Crimson and Clover" with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Cyrus made her adoration for Jett abundantly clear by wearing pink heart-shaped nipple pasties with the initials JJ. Taking a page out of Jett's book of female empowerment, Cyrus dresses in radical and groundbreaking ways, demanding to create art on her own terms.
The rockstar challenges traditional gender roles in music by defying the expectations of what a female musician should both look and sound like. Joan Jett has been a long-time supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, and Miley Cyrus has followed in her footsteps. The two had teamed up to participate in a campaign for Laura Jane Grace, lead vocalist of a punk band, Against Me!, in support of Grace's experience with gender dysphoria and her decision to come out as transgender. Their support in Grace’s journey of self-expression is one of many examples where they used their platform to advocate for gender expression and equality in the music industry.
For Miley Cyrus, what may have started as a professional and artistic crush has evolved into a beautiful collaboration between two empowering women? Both had been belittled and ridiculed for their unique display of femininity, but neither backed down in the face of controversy. In The New York Times article by Melena Ryzik, Jett explains that she believes that her “lot in life is to battle” through mental strength, demanding freedom of self-expression in her own way. In spite of setbacks created by normative society, Jett continues to question traditional gender roles in modern society, helping people discover their own power in self-expression and sexuality.

Joan Jett, getting older and getting cooler
Joan Jett played at the Florida Theater and I caught wind of some of the reviews on the way out. A middle-aged man commiserating with a friend, “she was pushing the new album, but we want to hear the old stuff.” I would never openly diss the patron Saint of rock and roll, but of course, if you’re going to see Joan Jett, it’s safe to say you’re there for the timeless bangers. Although it was a nice variety of material, I consider that $150 spent towards the 6 songs I knew, and the 3 I love. My personal anthem for sexual frustration (Do you wanna touch me) my daily affirmation (I don’t give a damn about my reputation) and lyrics that transcend space, time, and reason for how they somehow apply to every single person (hate myself for loving you).
The show itself was a little lackluster, I don’t know what her shows in the 80’s were like, or really any previous show to compare, but it felt a bit like a deflated balloon. Lacking energy, verve. Her hits are just so powerful, so BIG. They are truly some of the defining anthems of the genre- literally “I Love Rock n Roll.” And the performance didn’t quite match the emotion and ethos of the original songs. Forget the audience, for the sake of rock n roll, some songs have to be sang with full gusto, or not at all. Every fiber of your soul needs to go into a song like Bad Reputation. She was giving us 60%.
But honestly, she could’ve laid on the stage asleep and it still would’ve been worth it. You have to see the pillars of rock and roll while you can.
And I think I’m content with a subpar experience because the concert was about more than just music for me.
Seeing Joan Jett is one of the few points of reference I have for older women who inspire me. I just can’t ever seeing myself getting “old” and Joan Jett embodies that agelessness. She has style, confidence, and edge. She wears all black and plays electric guitar. She doesn’t give a damn. And if she’s not feeling like giving a 100% performance, she ain’t gonna give two fucks about it. She’s not gonna fake it.
And in a way, that’s also pretty cool. She’s in her 60’s so I suppose it’s fair that a show won’t match the energy and intensity of those in her 20’s.
She’s still Joan Fucking Jett.
When I was a teenager, I couldn’t imagine what I’d be like, or even look like when I was older. The concept of 30 was as distant and utterly unimaginable as God himself.
And now that I’m here, it makes me look toward 50, another milestone that’s widely considered “old” with a new approach. After all, Joan Jett has surpassed 50, and still has her fire. An undeniable presence. And you don’t have to be a famous musician to have that.
Women like Joan make me unafraid of aging, because they never lost the adventure of life. They didn’t settle for suburbia and kids and a husband. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s always nice to see people who go off the beaten path and hold their own.
Beauty fades, but cool is forever.

Would love to hear your Shawn thoughts!
Anon 2: I'd be intrigued to hear your thoughts on Shawn (saw that in your hashtags recently)
*************
Thanks anons - being asked for my opinion is my favourite thing.
An anon introduced me to this podcast a while back - asking about the Gryles episode - which I enjoyed, even if I obviously disagreed with a lot. Then @42mins started listening and she told me about the Shawn episodes, but at first I didn't realise it was the same podcast. I've now listened to quite a lot of the podcast and I find it really interesting.
For those who don't know, Shawn (a pseudonym) is a guest on the 'what I will say' (used to be called Swiftgron Nation). The story is that she dated a female popstar, and contacted the podcast to say 'yes these things happen'.
The story Shawn's telling is very much of a love smited by an evil music industry. She was there for her ex. She didn't want to break up with her ex. There was trickery, abuse and blackmail.
What I find most interesting about the way that she's telling her story - is that you get a view of another alternative peaking through. For example, Shawn says that her ex's number was changed by her team, to make sure Shawn couldn't get in contact with her ex. The ex has no agency in any of the stories Shawn tells.
I find Shawn an unreliable narrator in a very real way. Who wouldn't rather tell a story about how the bad music industry kept you apart, rather than acknowledge that your ex doesn't want to be with you? Because the way Shawn talks ellides very simple facts, like the fact that her ex could contact her any time if she wanted to.
Shawn could be making this all up - and not be who she says at all, but if so I'm very impressed at her grasp of psychology. It's the unreliability of her story that makes me think that she's telling us the story as she understands it. (I feel the same way about the way she talks about the industry, the way she talks is more authoratitive than the answers - that makes perfect sense to me as someone who has had her experiences). Basically the biggest pointer to me that she is who she says she is, is how unreliable her answers are.
I'd be really interested in what other people make of her.
**********
I have some other thoughts from the podcasts - some of which are just fandom things that annoy me (the whole 'what relationship problems would a straight, white, cis, rich woman' is as absurd as it is tedious. I also find the very literal lyric interpretations, and the huge role that plays in the stories people tell based on assumptions I don't share. It does make me think that fans would have no idea who Taylor dates). But the one's I'm most interesting are about Taylor's storytelling - and how that intersects with her celebrity.
I hadn't realised how lightly Harry got off - how much everyone who goes out with Taylor regrets it and the stories she tells about them.
Partly I think it shows how expert Harry's response of 'she's a really good songwriter' is. And how much that response is based in his own strength (which isn't telling stories, but leaving space where other people can tell stories). Harry's approach disarms her stories, and means he hasn't been defined by them. (When even Maggie Gyllenhaal is like - shut the fuck up about the scarf already. The only other person who has got off OK is Joe Jonas, but that's because he has a wife who is much cooler than him and can say 'ha ha this is hilarious).
And the other thing is what an interesting and attractive story Taylor's relationship with Joe is. (I'm not making any claim to it's truth or not. I've no idea. I still think 'London Boy' lyrics are too bad for her to be in a realtionship with Joe logic is sound, but I will agree that there may be more compelling evidence out there). And what a skill it is to be able to tell interesting stories about yourself.
I think one of the pointed aspects of Louis and Harry's careers is that neither of them have been able to tell a story about themselves as interesting and appeallingas the story that Larries tell about

Songs from my library that I think class 1-A would listen to pt.1
Includes Iida, Aoyama, Momo, Hagakure, Mina, Jiro, Denki, Sero, Kirishima, and Bakugo
Tumblr media
Tenya Iida
He listens to the Beetles and his favorite song is ‘Here Comes the Sun’
I just feel it in my souls that Iida would listen to older music, because frankly, I think that most modern pop songs would scare him. He also listens to Billy Joel songs which he thoroughly enjoys! Also, unlike Denki, Iida listens to Careless Whispers without the knowledge that it is in fact a meme
He basically has the music taste of my grandfather. He also enjoys listening to classical music while doing homework
Kyoka Jiro
She most definitely listens to ‘Bad Reputation’ by Joan Jett. She just gives off the vibes ya know?
She also listened to a lot of My Chemical Romance when she was in middle school and as she got older, she listened to Ozzy Osborn and older hard rock.
She also dabbles with other genres, but rock is her all-time favorite! (She also listens to Kesha bc I say so)
Momo Yaoyorozu
I think her favorite song is ‘New Soul’ by Yael Naim, and she learned how to play it on the piano
She also listens to a lot of soft pop and classical music. She usually listens to Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi and Adele. Here favorite song for each of them is ‘Photograph’ ‘Someone You loved’ and either ‘When We Were Young’ or ‘Someone Like You’
Here favorite classical musician to listen to is Beethoven and her favorite song of his is ‘Sonata No.14’ played in C-Sharp
Yuga Aoyama
It was sooooo hard to find songs that I thought he would listen to, but I ultimately decided he is a Swifty lol
His favorite albums are Speak Now and Lover and his favorite songs are ‘Better Than Revenge’ and ‘The Story Of Us’ from Speak Now and his favorites from Lover are ‘I Forgot You Existed’ and ‘London Boy’
He also listens to Gillian Hills and his favorite song of hers is ‘Zuo bisou bisou’ is his all time favorite song!
Toru Hagakure
She listens to a lot of weastern pop music, but she also listens to Kpop and Jpop and her favorite songs are ‘Boy With Luv’ by BTS and ‘Butter Sugar Cream’ by Tomggg
I think she listens to a lot of Zedd and and Panic! At The Disco, to and her favorite songs would be ‘Happy Now’ and ‘High Hopes’
She also listens to whatever is trending on tik tok just because
Mina Ashido
Ok, Mina most definitely listens to Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo and Cardi B
She doesn’t really have a favorite but she listened to WAP and Truth Hurts for a solid month and a half and can sing both song songs from start to finish
She also really likes Beach Bunny and Hailee Steinfeld and her favorite songs from those two are ‘Prom Queen’ and ‘Most Girls’
Denki
Denki listens to a shit ton of meme music, and he usually ends up enjoying it un-ironically. His favorites are Careless Whispers by George Michel and Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, and the squad absolutely dreads when it’s his turn to play music
He also has a playlist of Mario music and blares it through his headphones while doing homework (which is the only way that he’s able to concentrate on it)
His favorite Mario Kart song is Koopa Cape and he has choreographed a whole dance routine for it. He also loves the Wii theme, and it plays on repeat in his head 24/7
He and Kirishima also listen to Disney music all the time and his favorite is ‘Hakuna Matata’ from the Lion King
Kirishima
Kiri definitely listens to Panic! At The Disco and My Chemical Romance. His favorite songs from those two are ‘Hey Look Ma, I Made It’ ‘Victorious’ and ‘Teenagers’
He also listens to Lizzo, which Mina got him hooked on and he really likes ‘Good as Hell’.
Kiri also had a banger workout playlist which has a lot of Imagine Dragons and obviously has to have Eye of The Tiger on it lol
His favorite Disney song is ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ and he really looks up to Mulan and thinks she is the manliest Disney Princess
Sero
Sero listens to spanish pop and absolutely listens to Despacito and laughs his ass off when people who don’t know Spanish try to sing it and get the words terribly wrong
He also would listen to Lil Nas X and his favorite song is ‘MONTERO’ because I say so
Another artist that I think Sero likes is Elvis Presley. I just think that he would vibe with the more chill songs like ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and ‘Suspicious Minds’
Bakugo
BAKUGO LISTENS TO SAKURA KISS AND CHIKATTO CHIKA CHIKA AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME IM WRONG!
He also listens to death metal, but mostly for the drum parts, and tries to learn them so that he can say that he can do it better. He likes the band The Black Dahlia Murder and his favorite song by them is ‘The Window’
But ultimately, Bakugo really likes songs like ‘Would You Be So Kind’ and ‘Absolutely Smitten’ by dodie because they help him calm down and they make think of Kirishima.
Tumblr media
Ok, that’s all! Hope you enjoyed :)
Oh! And here’s a link back to my master list! Hope you have a lovely day <3

Metal Family OC dropping in now.
Meet Eva-
Tumblr media
Ches’ older half sister! I’ll put more info about her under the cut but essentially their Dad slept around and he’s abandoned more than one kid. She’s six years older than Ches and the two were very close when he was younger but eventually had a falling out.
Tumblr media
STORY:
Their father is a notorious cheater and has fathered more than a few children in and around the factory region; Ches and Eva being two of them.
For the most part Ches and Eva have no knowledge of each other till they meet years later. Ches' mother takes him to where Eva's mom is living in an attempt to get some form of child support. It doesn't work but while the mothers argue Eva and Ches meet. Eva was coming back home from school when she ran into them in the hallway. Noticing Ches' discomfort, and not wanting to deal with the fight, she offered to wait with him down bellow and outside the apartments. It was awkward at first with both just waiting on the bench outside. But eventually the two bonded over music when Eva brought out her CD player. Both had similar tastes of music and were fairly chill people. She was 16 and he was 10. Eva lives at the apartments across the street from the zipperlock building in the middle staple building.
Tumblr media
For the next year or so the two would meet up with Eva being an unofficial babysitter to Ches. They spend a lot of time together and Ches warms up to her as he begins to see her as family. Eva also grows fond of Ches and is glad to have some genuinely nice family. The two bond over their shitty dad, music and the fact they live in similar situations. She helps him refine his music tastes, encourages his guitar skills and teaches him the more technical part of music/band life (terms, genres and specifics) given that she has dated more than a few musicians as well as being in a few bands as singer (though she is not passionate about music).
Despite her kind nature Eva is very irresponsible and passive. She also isn't the best role model as she introduces Ches to the clubbing nightlife and eventually gets him exposed/hooked to alcohol and cigarettes through her other friends. Eva doesn't try to stop him and lets him do as he pleases. She also encouraged him to steal under the guise of 'borrowing'. Still, despite her shortcomings, she is the first person that Ches feels genuinely likes him and cares about him.
However one day while hanging out around her apartments they run into their father. Ches is surprised since he hasn't seen him since he was a baby however Eva just bitterly greets him and after he bothers her for some money he heads back inside the apartment. It's then that Ches finds out that Eva actually lives with their father and she is not in the same position as he's in since her mother is actually married to their Dad. Thus she is his 'real' child while Ches is a bastard. Ches is rightfully upset and surprised by the revelation but Eva merely shrugs him off, not understanding why he's so shocked since she sees no benefit to living with their Dad. They have a small fight with Ches angrily stating she's a liar and he hates her before running off.
A few days later he tries to apologize/talk to her but can't find her in any of the usual spots. It isn't till later that he learns through her friend that Eva had run away with a boyfriend of hers and left the city. It was a spur of the moment thing but Eva, being careless and irresponsible, doesn't bother to tell Ches or really think about him. She simply assumed he wouldn't care or just bounce back from it. However Ches is deeply affected by her abandonment since it only proves his mother's words true; that everyone will eventually leave and that Ches is unlovable once he lowers his defenses or shows any negative emotions. It ruins him for a long time and only begins to heal after meeting Glam where he makes his own family. He always wonders what happened to her, though.
Eva sets up a lot of his bad habits and fears for the future.
PERSONALITY:
Eva is a very kind and laid back teenager who grew up similar to Ches as in she raised herself. She lives with both her parents but since her mother is a drunk and her father is constantly gone she manages the house by herself and has learned not to rely on others. Technically an only child but has many half siblings because of her father. Because of her solitude she is used to doing whatever she wants and is not very responsible given her upbringing. She also is not very conscious of others, often considering herself a 'one man island' and rarely lets people close. While Ches was the closest person in her life she ultimately she left him behind. Not out of malice, though. Considering the two are fairly similar she assumed that Ches was like her and strong enough to deal with being by himself; unaware that he would be deeply affected by her abandonment since he's a lot more caring and open than she was. Similar to Ches, and he learns this from her, she pushes any negative feelings aside and refuses to acknowledge anything negative until she physically can't anymore.
Eva's favorite band is the Runaways and is in love with Joan Jett. She's a late blooming lesbian (as she doesn't realize it till she's much older). She likes rock and grunge the most. Can't play an instrument but an awesome singer! I headcanon her voice as sounding like this or this. Was in a band or two but was mainly through her love interests and not out of her own desires. Runs away with a guy and gets married but leaves him a couple months later. Doesn't return home for a long time. Probably has a kid, maybe not. Who knows.
As for how she ties into the present day plot, she probably doesn't to be honest. But if she did she'd probably come back to give Ches some money from their father's will or just happens to walk into his shop one day. It will not be a nice meeting, though. Not for Ches, at least. Either way, this came from a sort of daydream I had and I'm pretty happy about her! I'll probably draw her more later but we'll see. Honestly kind of made her to ship her with either Lydia or Anna but we're just gunna have to see lol.

i want to see a biopic about trent reznor from rick rubin's perspective about how exactly we went from nine inch nails writing hurt to rick showing johnny cash the song and producing his cover, and there be dozens of cameos from jay z and run dmc and ad-rock and mike D and LL cool J and eminem and chuck d and kanye and sir mixalot and fred durst and lil jon and serj tankian and kerry king and mike shinoda and adele and john frusciante and corey taylor (even though he hates rick but he doesn't hate trent or at least I don't think he does???) and glenn danzig and the dixie chicks and joan jett and tom petty (edit- fuck I forgot he was dead T.T ) and tom morello and rivers cuomo and shakira and justin timberlake and metallica and lizzy grant and billy corgan and carlos santana and... sigh... imagine dragons since apparently rick's producing their fifth one. great, more imagine dragons music. just great.
anyway it would be titled I Hurt Myself Today and would be obvious oscar bait and reznor would win academy awards for scoring it and the soundtrack would make a bajillion dollars because it'd basically be judgment night part 2 what with all the rap and metal
only thing tripping it up is casting. I mean we could have joaquin phoenix play him again, he's very clearly got the chops for acting give his decades of amazing performances but cash was getting on in years by the end so it'd have to be someone older... I mean fuck bill murray but the man has range, and I can see it now, plus the obvious oscar bait would need a big name actor like that headlining it. adrien brody could probably do rick if he had a fake beard, or maybe daniel radcliffe or liev schrieber. paul rudd maybe but if I see paul rudd with rick rubin's beard I'll just see paul rudd in a fake beard. thought occurred to me patton oswalt would be a great pick because I just suddenly remembered him as dr demento in weird al's fake film trailer of the movie where aaron paul played him (another movie I actually want to waych) but I didn't remember if he was jewish or not (since we can't have a goy play a jewish man because antisemitic whitewashing). and I mean dan avidan is the right age but he's just musician famous and not quite actor famous and he couldn't be a cameo unless rick rubin produced the next ninjasexparty album.
but then who the fuck would play trent reznor?
chris evans? jake gyllenhall? james mcavoy? there's not many actors who can successfully look dark and brooding in their mid-30s and I don't even know who can or can't sing!
...unless he played himself.
although he's scoring it so he can't also be an actor because then it would look like a vanity project and lose oscar points.
idk I just want that movie to exist especially since more people need to know who rick rubin is beyond "the guy jay-z talks to at the end of 99 problems" or the grandfather of nu metal.

( ZENDAYA, 22, FEMALE) I just bumped into [ DAISY GREENE ] the other day while walking down [ EAST ] Kingsboro, where [ SHE ] live. I hear they can be [ FREE SPIRITED ] and [ FLAKY ], but when I think of them I immediately think about [ THE LOUD STEREOS AT A LOCAL CONCERT VENUE, A ROADTRIP WITH NO CLEAR DESTIONATION, & SWEET TEA IN THE SUMMER]. ( sarah , 24, she/her, est )
Tumblr media
Soooo here is my third child, Daisy. I hope you guys enjoy her! I drew some slight inspiration from past muses of mine and Peyton Sawyer from One Tree Hill.
Born and raised in a small, rural town in Georgia. Now, when I say small, I say SMALL. Like, a popular or less than 2,000 people. So, everyone generally always knew another. Close, tight knit community.
The youngest out of three children. She has two older brothers; one that is two years older and one that is four years older.
Grew up in a very strict, religious household. Went to church every Sunday. Prayed at dinner every night, read the bible constantly. Very, very strict and conservative family values, folks.
Her mother is a nurse and her father is a farmer and football coach. They grew up on a family farm with lots of land, animals, etc. She always had memories of waking up early to feed the pigs, cows, chickens, and knows how to ride a horse.
Ever since she could remember, she was involved in something. Started taking beauty lessons and dance classes as soon as she could walk. Daisy began doing local beauty pageants within the state and she was quick to become a star. She would win competition after competition, getting so many trophies and ribbons. They filled her room and home. The girl was miss teen Georgia for several years in a row, becoming Miss Teen USA when she was sixteen.
Also was involved with cheerleading and other clubs while she was in high school, she was very popular and always was nominated for dance royalties.
With being the only girl in the family, she was always on a rather tight leash. She was never allowed to date or be around boys, her family being afraid she was going to get heart broken.
As she got older, she began to question a lot of things. Her own religion and just herself in general? She always felt like she was being forced to be somebody she really wasn’t and having to live in the shadows of others, being molded to be somebody her parents loved and nothing more.
She began to express an interest for music when she was around 10, 11? Started covering country songs as apart of the talent portion of her competitions and as she got older, her taste in music switched to rock. Began to idolize people like Avril Lavinge, Hayley Williams, Joan Jett, etc. They just all seemed so cool and free-spirited. She wanted that.
High School went by quickly and she honestly didn’t want to go to college. She wanted to travel and move somewhere to start a music career. Daisy tried to explain this to her parents but they didn’t care, they thought it was a stupid idea.
Daisy would be stuck between a rock and a hard time. She would try to please her parents and go to college and major in something she would hate, or take a risk.
She somehow would get enough guts within herself to just, run away. Literally. The day before her high school graduation, she packed up everything she could and took her old, beat up pickup truck and left. She left a note explaining that this was what she needed. For the past almost eighteen years of her life, she didn’t even know who she was.
The young girl had no destination or true goal where she was going, she just needed to get away. Eventually made her way up until Tennessee before her truck would break down. A nice, old man would try to help fix it up for her but there was no hope for the Ford truck. He would offer to trade her truck for his old, newly renovated WV van. She took the offer and it would be the best thing to ever happen to her.
Daisy was now the proud owner of a baby blue, VW van that would be her home. Living out of a van was different and a challenge, but brought her so many amazing opportunities.
Over the next few years, she would be off the grind. She deleted all of her social media and didn’t keep in contact from anybody back home. She would travel all across the united states, her favorite places being California and Wyoming.
Daisy would stay in certain states for a few months at a time, working odd end jobs to make money. Mostly waitressing or playing local gigs. She wasn’t making much, but enough to get by.
Heard her cousin Spencer was living in New York and decided, hey, that’ll be my next stop for a bit.
Is very new to Kingsboro and has been there for a day. She’s not sure how long she’ll be here, but she’s enjoying it so far. Wants to try to start up a serious band and or meet other musicians in the neighborhood.
OTHER INFO:
It took her a long time to realize, but she considers herself pansexual.
Still very much has a cute lil’ southern accent
Her favorite drink is lemonade and sweet tea with lots of sugar
Is a strong lover of breakfast food
Has learned to accept more of her natural beauty, being forced to live behind fancy dresses, makeup, and hair for years
Can play the guitar and drums
Her van’s name is Wendy

kind of, i love my family but also they get on my damn nerves. i look forward to moving out when i can love them from a safe distance
39. Madonna- Describe your crush
i don’t even have a crush right now!!!!! the only people i like are eddie van halen and john paul jones, who are both over 50 years older than me

1, 21, 35, 49 - Headcanon meme for Shepard
headcanon memes. | @parallaxedcaptain
Tumblr media
1.  what’s your muse’s favorite album of all time / favorite artist?
Given how far into the future Shepard’s timeline is, I’m going to cheap out on this answer and go with her Modern verse musical tastes. Given that she’d have been born in the late 1980s (If we take canon age of 32 into account), she grew up on a lot of 90s music, but for the years her parents were alive with her, she definitely got into their older music tastes as well.
That said, I’d probably put her favourite musicians to be along the likes of Garbage, The Cranberries, Hole, Heart, and Joan Jett.
21. did they have any fears growing up that they’ve since conquered?
As a child, Alice used to have a fear of the dark. A genuine uncertainty about what was in the dark, and could not sleep without a night light between the ages of 5 to 8. Even after getting past this stage, she still found herself uncertain about dark places - especially as a teenager exploring local forests, farms, and mountains on Mindoir with her friends.
As an adult, it’s never really bothered her to be out at night, even after the Raid on Mindoir. Yet, when Shepard died in 2183, her fear of darkness (and along with suffocation) returned full swing. She’s always got a light of some variety on in her cabin, and while she never consciously thinks about it, it’s just become a habit. It makes it easier to wake up from trauma-related nightmares and dealing with her past, especially when alone. In the home or on board the Normandy is easy to manage, and while focused on a mission, they usually have flashlights on their weapons or armor to illuminate the dark, but it would be rare to see Shepard willingly engage on anything that takes her into utter darkness.
35. are they possessive over their things? or over other people? both?
Shepard is pretty lenient when it comes to sharing things (food, clothes ((I mean, she’d give you the shirt off her back if you needed it)), etc). She’s been poor, she knows what it’s like to have next to nothing. The only thing she’s a little bit possessive on is her weaponry as a soldier - she has mods she’s spent time assembling as well as her personal historical firearms collection along with her model ship collection that she’s proud of.
In terms of relationships, Shepard is pretty easy going, though like anyone can experience a sense of jealousy, but given her career and respective constraints, it would have to be a lot of her significant other spending time with another person and blowing her off for her to actually grow concerned about it. Possession in that way is ugly, and she does her best to communicate those concerns should they arise.
Possession in the sexy way when she’s in a particular Mood(tm) and wants to let her partner know they’re hers? Well, that’s a different story. :’)
49. do they have a creative outlet? if so, what is it?
Other than her little hobbies as mentioned above, Shepard isn’t the most creative person. She’s busy with her career and part of that is filling out mission reports, requisition requests, etc. If she had the time, she’d probably take up photography, if anything - she’s travelled a lot and would love to put those sights to film. Maybe in retirement.

I have a sort of weird McLennon AU idea: Reincarnated!John
I got the idea from reading this interview with Paul McCartney, where he claims if he had been a girl he could have maybe gone out and fought for John to keep their very close relationship and prevent Yoko from essentially “stealing,” John away.
Then I got to thinking, well, what if, instead, John had been the girl? Which then lead to me connecting it too-- well, what if when John had been killed, on Dec. 8th, a little girl had also been born. Basically, John’s soul being reincarnated as a female.
A little girl born a few hours after John Lennon was assassinated, December 8th, 1980, in a hospital in Liverpool England, named Joan Winifred Stanley. Jo, or JoJo for short.
Now while this girl has John’s soul, heart, mind, and similarities feminized-- Joan is still an individual, with her own childhood and memories-- who’s growing up in the 80s, and is a lively, young, and lovely teenage girl in the beginning of the 90s. Her favorite rocker is Joan Jett, likes Blondie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, and has a secret love for Elvis Presley... knows of the Beatles, but only see’s the band and their music as “alright, sort of antwacky.” though her mom fancies them.
Joan has fiery auburn colored hair which reaches some past her shoulders, wavy and thick, can often be a big birds nest of a mess. Milk chocolate brown eyes that appear to have specks of amber when the sunlight hits them; while softened with heavy lashes, are burning and alert, a glare could possibly kill someone. Poor eyesight, hates wearing her glasses because she thinks they make her look like a total lame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[reference to what sort of glasswear her eyes required and the style of them]
5′5″, thiccc thighs, perky but rather small breasts, wide hips. Noticeable jawline and chin, though softened with baby fat, high cheekbones, sharp aquiline nose, bottom lip plumper than the top. Top two front teeth are crooked, slightly turned inward. It’s hard for me to describe her hairstyle during the very start of the 90s, so it’s something like this since she is an 80s child and for most of her young teens was in the crowd so;
Tumblr media
See now, this is what I have for female John / Joan as far of what her face and hair may look like;
Tumblr media
****[It’s still sort of rough, I know, I need to ink her in and then color her before I wanna show the full reference drawing. I honestly want to try and give her a bit more of a wider jawline, or a bit longer of a face-- but again, Joan is still her own person so she can’t look exactly like John, of course]
Sagittarius[John was a Libra], smoker of Luckies, musically inclined [perhaps sounds like a mix of Deborah Harry and Joan Jett? Though more nasally] loves to sing, learned to play acoustic guitar from her mother, and learned to play the harmonica from her grandda [the one good thing he had given to her as their relationship was generally soured since her mother’s parents saw her as nothing more than a bastard child] Could be considered a bit tomboyish but knows how to use her feminine wiles to manipulate, humiliate, and get what she wants. Tries not to be a horrible rebel as she hates to disappoint and stress out her mother, but can be a wild child and has a bit of an issue with authority and respecting rules and requests she deems unnecessarily stupid. Single child raised under a single mother as her father was never in the picture, and while her mothers’ parents were around they barely helped, so they lived in the manner of “we manage.” Coming from Liverpool, and in the poor-working class of society, her mannerisms of speaking are indeed Scouse.
Hot tempered, jealous/possessive of close friends and crush/lover, quick wit and sharp tongued, masks hurt with indifference and practically ghosting someone til she gets over it or they apologize adequately. Wants to love and own people, but does NOT want to be owned or tied down as it makes her feel caged. Freedom of self is incredibly important to her, and feeling like she’s losing it can cause her to act out and lash out.
Tumblr media
Now, in the early 1990s, I believe Paul is around the age of 49/50. This might be just me projecting, but that makes Paul the legit Daddy in this whole thing, if ya catch my drift. Paul is, in my humble opinion, rather attractive and handsome in his late forties/early fifties. So yeah, silver fox Paul is gonna be a thing.
Tumblr media
I have a thing for older men, alright? Let me project just a little bit here in my own AU.
Tumblr media
I really haven’t thought much on how these two end up meeting, perhaps they meet during Paul’s World Tour during 1990? Again, Joan knows of the Beatles, and knows of Paul McCartney-- begrudgingly she does like a bit of his music-- but hadn’t the money, nor the greatest of utmost desire as many of her other female friends had, to get into to see him when he stopped in Liverpool. She thought it to be neat, but could live without seeing him.
But fate would lead to the two of them meeting, in probably an unexpected sort of way.
Anyways, right away Paul get’s this extremely strange vibe from this girl, this girl who watches him, squinting up at him, with such interest-- and despite being a well known [legendary] and talented musician, and veteran of the music industry, he suddenly feels like he’s been thrown back to the very first day he’d met the scruffy and polar opposite, John Lennon. He finds himself wanting to impress this young bird, because he feels as if despite all his credentials, they mean nothing at this very moment, and he’s stupidly nervous around some girl he had just happened to bump into [because she’s a young bird perhaps?? with burning brown eyes and a quirked, teasing mouth that reminded him of someone???], and it’s like being back to square one of having to prove himself, of his talent and passion, and in the end, the two appear to be sizing each other up, circling like predators do with prey.  It’s a painful comparison when he realizes it, realizes how far this whole interaction threw him back, back into memories and feelings he had long since tried to bury, as not cry and mourn over each day.
It’s her who tries to end the first encounter, because she also gets this awfully weird aura from this old rock n’ roller, but she has no memories to connect it too. It leaves her feeling frustrated, because she really can’t find any rhyme or reason to why she feels this way, why she feels that this isn’t their first time interacting. Despite being an older man, she can’t help but think he looks rather good, and while she can’t put her finger on it again, she thinks that if Elvis had lived to be a bit older, he’d look something like this McCartney fellow. And while she tries to hide it, act indifferent and barely moved that she’s talking to the Paul McCartney, she does feel a bit starstruck, and so she simply wants to end this and keep it as a personal, favorite memory that she may recount to her friends and mother, who’ll probably think she’s just bullshittin’.
But when she attempts to leave, again this McCartney man, who insists that she call him Paul, catches her attention with a light grasp of her arm and stops her instantly. He’s quick to drop the hand the moment she whips her head around, shooting daggers at where he had touched her, then to staring right into his eyes. Paul isn’t sure why he’s doing this, why he feels like he needs to see this girl again, but as an excuse, he claims that it’s been awhile since he’s been back in Liverpool, and so, perhaps-- perhaps she could be the one to show him about. It’s a pitiful attempt of avoiding that he simply wants to meet up with this girl again-- and Joan rolls her eyes and breathes out an amused laugh at such a poor front.
“Aren't I a blind bit too young fe you?” Joan would say, and while the words are obviously a dig, a tease, Paul can’t help but feel as if she had slapped him, his face growing hot and red. Tries to explain, sputtering, almost insulted, that “No-- I mean, yes, I mean, I am not--” and Joan, at first with a relatively flat expression, raises an eyebrow and slowly a smirk begins to form as she watches Paul, the Paul McCartney, fluster and stutter about like the awkward teen boys she knows and have shot down. “Am jus’ skitt'n,” Joan would give in with smile and a laugh, that caused Paul goosebumps and his stomach to lurch, because while softer and higher pitched, reminded him of someone, someone once closer than close.
“A’rite Sir Paul, I'll indulge you.” and so, while she reasons it’s to just be nice this old rocker who probably hasn’t seen a young groupie in some time, she makes it appear she’s writing down her address or phone number on his hand-- and before she makes her get away, Paul would point out she hadn’t officially given her name to him-- “No manners these kids,” Paul might tease, and the auburn haired girl, with a smile that reached her eyes and showcased her nearly straight pearlies, told him her name was Joan, Joan Winifred Stanley, to be precise. Without giving him a chance to respond to it, she bid him farewell with a playful two fingered salute-- and for a breathless moment, Paul swore he had seen John there, just for a split second.
When he finally gets himself grounded and doesn’t feel so hot anymore, he discovers that she hadn’t written her number down, nor even an address-- just simply a street name; Menlove Avenue. If he’s so interested in continuing their little encounter, he could just go up and down the street, was her reasoning. She didn’t believe he’d go through such trouble to find her again-- anyway, he’s touring, and he has a wife and kids. Weird for a man his age to want to what, make friends with a barely 18 year old bird from old dingy Liverpool? A nobody, Joan would think, almost bitterly.
Tumblr media
I’m still putting a lot of thought into this AU, so a lot of things can change and such, especially the idea behind how Joan/John and Paul meet and begin to interact more regularly, how their relationship starts and builds and grows and changes, and of course how it might end [I’m fiddling with the idea that Joan ends up dying too, but that’s a bit too angst-y for me to really focus on so]
Of course because I’m a fucking degenerate, I would like to have a moment where the two do end up having an intense affair-- though it’s just sensitive because, despite being not real at all, I want to give some respect to Linda and his kids around that time too, because I know Paul loves them dearly. So this AU is obviously full of fucking angst-y and complication and slow burn and miscommunication.
I can’t even have my cake and eat it too in my OWN FUCKING AU. Typical.
And yeah, there’s gonna be a noticeable age-gap in this AU, so if that’s not your thing, then that’s fine. There is gonna be a lot of coming of age shit attached to that, a bit of daddy kink, Joan having obvious daddy issues [John most likely had legit mommy issues let’s be real], first times, you name it.
In the AU, Paul is slowly going to come to the outlandish idea/theory that this girl is John, or at least John’s soul reincarnated. He can’t help it-- she reminds him of John too much, it’s eerie how alike the two are that they might as well be the same person. Paul knows he must be crazy for thinking it, and hates it because it makes him feel as if he’s gone completely obsessed over John, the idea of John still being here with him.
I will include an appearance from George and Ringo, with maybe Ringo trying to tell Paul that perhaps this is his way of handling the absence of John, and Paul, trying to justify himself, partially agrees. George ends up meeting this girl, and can’t help but agree that Paul may be right, just maybe, because even George can’t deny this girl reminds him of John too, and gives off this aura that is unmistakably John. Ringo thinks both of them are daft sods, but when Ringo meets Joan, he also finds himself seeing John in her-- though Ringo never voices it. But George is careful to not agree with Paul out loud, worried it might encourage Paul in an unhealthy and potentially dangerous way.
That is, will Paul confront Joan about this and finally tell her that he believes she is John reincarnated? Paul wants too, he wants to tell her, but he’s not stupid, he knows it would probably freak the girl out and cause their budding relationship to instantly crumble and die. But whenever Paul talks about John to her once they’ve gotten close enough that he’s comfortable to divulge such intimate stories and memories about his best mate, Joan’s face would become pensive, almost a far-away look in her eyes, and would begin to comment on how she swears she’s heard these stories before, or that something even similar had happened to her to which had happened to John [even though many of the stories are personal, and kept rather private, so how would she know???]
But Joan would simply shrug off those feelings of Deja Vu, laugh and shake her head, and just move on. She didn’t like getting those feelings, like she should have memory of something but just doesn’t.
Excerpts from a fanfic I’ll never write:
It’s a mess, really. Paul falling for this young lively bird with a mean wit and soft lips and squinting eyes that desperately needed glasses, which still managed to observe and could kill someone in the heat of an argument. A girl with auburn hair that tickled his cheeks whenever they’d hug, a girl with a memorable nose, a girl who smelt of ciggies and Liverpool and vanilla and home.  “You’ve got kaleidoscope eyes,” Paul would try one afternoon, sounding like a young awkward teen again trying to impress a young but experienced girl. Joan would turn those fiery eyes to him, squinting, turning to an unimpressed glower that didn’t match the flustered smile. “Sod off, old man,” Joan would reply, snubbing him as she would do, though the smile still betrayed her.
Paul would fall, fall and fall, like Alice, except there would be no floor to catch him. He would fall for Joan, because he fell for John. It’s a mess, really-- because as things escalated, Paul’s love for Joan and John began to blend and blur, and it was bad because who did Paul really love? Joan, the wild young thing who could tear him down just as easily as build him up in the same sentence and look, or John-- who could do the same but ten times over, and had. Joan though, Joan was putting pieces back together that he had tried to bury long ago, pieces that John had left the day of December 8th.
Tumblr media
“I’m not John,” Joan would say, blunt and straight, cigarette clenched between her teeth. Paul feeling as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs, sweat breaking out on the back of his neck. “I’m Joan,” she’d continue mercilessly, taking a long drag of the fag before ripping it from between her lips, smoke swirling out between the cruel words of reality.  “I’m not some catalyst for your best mate, for whatever you and him had.” Joan’s young face twisted angrily, her eyes filled with dark hurt as she glared at the old rock and roller before her. For a second, Paul saw John again, John with his sneer and his burning glare and his words of knives that dared Paul to say something back, to engage him in war.  It made Paul sick, all of it. He opened his mouth to argue, to protest what she was saying, what she was claiming has been happening all these months. But he can’t, because it’s true, it’s all true, and it burns his insides up.  “You love John, and, and I’m not John,” she’d say, voice cracking as she can’t hide the hurt that comes from finally speaking these truths, bringing them to the light. Her face looks broken, tears threatening to break just as her voice had-- cigarette forgotten between two delicate fingers.
When Paul could find his voice, all that could be said was the girl’s name, soft and almost like a plea; “Joan.”  “Don’t,” she’d bite back like a cornered animal, lip curling in disgust from just hearing her name come from those lips that had practically seared marks along her body. But Paul didn’t, he couldn’t stop, he’d still try-- tried reaching out towards her, a hand going to grasp at her free hand by her side, but all he got was grazing the tips of his fingers to the back of hers before she whipped her hand away, body following the violent motion as she stepped back, away. Those eyes, it’s like she wanted to kill him, especially as that had broken the dam and now her cheeks were wet and she was trying not to hyperventilate and finally she dropped the cigarette as her hands began to quiver.  “I don’t want to hold your hand anymore!  don’t you get it?” she might as well have slapped him, stabbed him, but Paul truly believed those things would have hurt less than what she had just said to him.
Tumblr media
Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read all this bullshit lol I’m really invested in this AU, and so expect more of it. I will be posting the full drawing of Joan once it’s finished, or I can’t bring myself to work on it anymore and thus claim it’s finished to the best of my abilities lol

Early DC hardcore gent Rob Moss tells us what it was like then....and now.
When I became friends with a Rob Moss on Facebook a year or so back I knew the name sounded familiar. Then, I’d heard he was a musician (as well as an author) and releasing a new record under the name Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin. Hmm….very interesting band name. I then began digging a little deeper and found out it was the same Rob Moss who had been in the Washington, DC-area pre-Marginal Man band called Artificial Peace and had later played in Government Issue for a time.
Apparently Rob hadn’t played music since those old hardcore days, but was now back in the saddle and living in Portland, Oregon (where he’s lived for several years). With Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin he put together an interesting concept, a different guest guitarist for each song. Some of the names you will definitely recognize from the punk rock days and beyond. It’s certainly a unique sounding record (and I reviewed it here on the site a few weeks back).
I wanted to ask Rob about the old days and have him bring us up to the present and everything in between. He was more than happy to oblige.

You’re on Flex Your Head and were in two iconic Washington, D.C. hardcore bands, were you born and raised there?
We moved from Boston to Wheaton, Maryland in 1966 – I was three – and to Bethesda a year later. The Bethesda I grew up in had a downtown of mostly old two- and three-story buildings, and there were cows in the field across from Walter Johnson High when I went there. I’ve not lived in the D.C. area since the fall of 1983.
Do you remember your earliest exposure to music?
My first memories are my dad playing records, like Edvard Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I think he chose them because that kind of music’s so visual. In the mid 1970s I discovered WPGC, a Top-40 station. I had a Radio Shack cassette deck that I’d put up against the radio to record stuff like The Night Chicago Died (Paper Lace) and Blockbuster (Sweet).
How and when did the punk rock bug hit you?
The how and who was Marc Alberstadt (original drummer in Government Issue). We’ve been friends since kindergarten and went to Hebrew school together. We used to hang out at his house and listen to his older brother’s records. Like Can’t Stand the Rezillos, the first Generation X album and the Sex Pistols. The when was 1978 or ’79.
Back then, Kenny, Marc’s brother, would sneak us in to see bands at the Psyche Delly and at the University of Maryland. There were no underage shows then. We saw the Slickee Boys, the Bad Brains, Tina Peel, Sorrows – bands like that.
But as far as really getting bit by the bug, it was when I saw how much fun the Slickee Boys had on stage. I had to start my own band, even though at that point I didn’t play a guitar or anything. This was before the Teen Idles, Dischord, or any of that.
When did you first pick up an instrument?
Marc was already playing drums, and Brian Gay played guitar. They convinced me to get a bass. Brian and I started getting together at his mom’s place in 1979 to write songs. They were pretty crude, we were taking our cues from the :30 Over D.C. compilation album.
How did you meet the Artificial Peace guys?
Let’s go back further. I was away for two weeks in the summer of 1980. And during that time, Government Issue had formed with Brian on bass and Marc on drums.
Brian and I already had a bunch of songs, and he still wanted to play guitar. So we formed another band – he played in both. We knew Mike Manos from school and learned that his brother had a drum set. Mike didn’t really know how to play. Marc gave him some tips, the rest was on-the-job training.
But we still needed a singer. This new wave-looking girl, named Sandra something-or-other, appeared in our school. She’d just moved from New York. None of the other girls at school looked like her. We asked her to sing. We called ourselves The Indians – it was supposed to be ironic.
Our first show was at American University with the GIs, S.O.A. and Youth Brigade. But it got cancelled at the last minute. So everyone met up at Roy Rogers. Fifty, maybe seventy-five, punks walked into the place within a few minutes of each other. The manager came out from behind the counter, he thought we were up to no good. But all we wanted was something to eat and to come up with a plan-B.
We ended up playing that night in the basement of a house in D.C. It was the first time we actually got to hear Sandra sing, because she’d kept pulling a no-show to our practices. John Stabb said she sounded like a dying parakeet.
After that we replaced her with Steve Polcari, who we’d known since junior high school, and changed our name to Assault and Battery. We played some shows like the infamous Pow Wow House gig, which I had set up, and recorded a demo a few months later.
But at the end of the summer of 1981, Brian went to art school in Chicago and I started at the University of Maryland. That meant the GIs needed a new bass player and we needed a new guitarist. Minor Threat had just broken up for the first time, and Brian Baker joined the GIs on bass, he later moved to guitar. Red-C had also just disbanded, so we welcomed Pete Murray to join us.
Artificial Peace was the name of one of our songs. I don’t know if we’d played it with Brian, I may have written it after he left. But we felt like we needed a new band name. We became Artificial Peace.
What were some of Artificial Peace’s most memorable shows?
Opening for the Bad Brains at the Peppermint Lounge in New York City. H.R. called the number he had for me, which was the pay phone down the hall from my dorm room in College Park. We drove up the day of the show, unloaded our gear and discovered H.R. gave me the wrong date. It was the next day. The show itself was terrible! The soundman screwed us. There was nothing in the monitors, we couldn’t hear a thing.
We played another show in NYC at the A7. The first band went on at midnight, we went on around five in the morning. Cheetah Chrome played that night, all I remember was that he was pretty messed up.
We also opened for Black Flag in Baltimore on their Damaged tour. We played well, but the power went out twice during Black Flag’s set. Henry recreated the Damaged album cover and punched out one of the mirror tiles that edged the stage. Lots of blood. How punk rock (laughing)!
As far as D.C., we played some shows at the Wilson Center, which were probably our best. We also played a talent show at the high school that Mike, Steve and I went to. We’d graduated the year before – I don’t recall how we got on the bill. A lot of punks showed up, it was pretty funny.

How did the band end?
Pete called me on the phone, telling me that he and the guys didn’t want to play anymore. It was a surprise. He gave no reason. A few weeks later I heard about Marginal Man. I guess they couldn’t be straight with me.
Was G.I. next? How did that happen? Stabb was my first D.C. hero that I ever met (1985 in Trenton).
Before I joined the GIs, I got together a few times with Kenny Alberstadt, who’s a fantastic guitarist, as well as a female guitarist, whose name escapes me. She looked like Joan Jett and played great! But it didn’t go anywhere.
Then Mitch Parker left Government Issue in the spring of 1983, and I got a call asking if I wanted to join. I played on the GIs summer tour. Our first show was at CBGBs. We had John’s dad’s Buick and a U-Haul trailer full of gear. Just us, no roadies. Tom and I did nearly all the driving. John never got a license. We’d let Marc drive only if Tom and I needed a break. We’d crash at people’s houses after the shows. Some nights it was at nice place and we got to do laundry. Other times, it was more like a squat. Tours were grueling then.

How did your tenure in G.I. end? Did you stop making music?
Around the end of the tour I heard that my transfer to Boston University got accepted. I told the guys. Tom, understandably, was not happy. Once I moved, I stopped playing. And by that time, I felt the scene wasn’t fun anymore.
How did Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin come about? Had the idea been brewing for a while?
I’d always wanted to do something more in music. About three years ago I picked up a guitar, started writing songs and posted a few on Facebook. Dwight Reid asked if I wanted to record them at his home studio. He’d play bass and we’d find a drummer. That’s how it happened.
Why did you get a different lead guitarist for each song?
I can get by playing rhythm guitar and singing, but not leads. And I wasn’t ready to commit to forming a touring band. Under those circumstances it would’ve been too big an ask to interest a great lead guitarist to get involved.
But what if, instead, I asked a different guy to play on each song? So I called up old friends and friends of friends, and nearly everyone agreed to help.
What made it such an incredible experience for me is how many musicians I’ve long admired said yes. In your question earlier, about when the punk rock bug hit me, I told you about seeing the Slickee Boys when I was 16 and hearing the first Generation X album. To have guys from those bands – Marshall Keith and Bob ‘Derwood’ Andrews – play on my new album is tremendous. I feel the same about Nels Cline, Don Fleming, Franz Stahl, Stuart Casson, Billy Loosigian, Dave Lizmi, Saul Koll, Chris Rudolf, Marion Monterosso, Spit Stix and everyone else who took part.
How’s the response to the record? Are you happy with it?
Many people comment on the song quality. That even after hearing the album once, they find themselves humming the songs. The earworm thing. To me that’s the best compliment.
What’s also made me happy is hearing from the guys who played on it. That they really like the album as a whole, not just their work on it.
Did you consider recording a hardcore album?
Listening to proto-punk and pub rock made me happy as a kid. And when I speak with friends who were there, many say the same thing. That’s why I make that type of music now, not hardcore.
With all that’s going on, isn’t hardcore still important?
As protest music? I suppose but it seems like preaching to the converted. Bob Dylan’s entire career is protest music, but he grew as an artist to express himself and reach more people. When he went electric in 1966, the folkies booed, they called him a traitor. They expected him to play the same Woody Guthrie songbook forever.
It's the same with hardcore. It had its place. I’m glad to have been part of it. But I no longer want to play it. Still, plenty of my new songs contain the kind of messages I wrote when I was in Artificial Peace. There’s also humor, like Ugly Chair and A Maltese Falcon. Or humor and tragedy, like Got My Ass Stuck in a Tree. Some are about getting older (Tony Alva’s Pictures) or being a kid (Life at 33 1/3 RPM).
How do you discover new music?
Recommendations from friends, mostly. But when I lived in Manhattan in the mid-‘80s to early ‘90s, I had a neighbor in the music business. He’d set down stacks of albums, mostly promo copies, by the trash. I saved what I liked and traded the rest.
That’s how I discovered a band I missed growing up. Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band. They were incredible, should’ve been huge! The intro to Rock & Roll ’78 still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Years later I met the guitarist from that band, Billy Loosigian, through Facebook. And now he’s played on one of my songs. Experiences like that really made the album special to me. I hope it does for everyone else.
What’s next? More music in the future?
Anything’s possible.

“I wanted to talk about everyday punk rock women” says Siobhan Woodrow, host of the podcast She’s A Punk. She is interested in the musicians, but she also wants to tell the stories of punk women who aren’t musicians, and to showcase the work they are doing. “I just wanted to speak to people that were not having their stories told,” as she puts it. “How else are we going to hear about the feminist queer wrestler unless I tell their story?” She feels that the podcast resonates with listeners because “We feel connected to one another. That’s not an opportunity that a lot of alternative women get to have.”
Woodrow is based in Ontario, Canada so our Skype interview takes place 11pm my time, 7pm her time. When she comes on screen, fresh from her day job presenting and programming at Ontario’s rock station 97.7 HTZ-FM, I can see that she is both younger than I expected (Woodrow has a particularly low speaking voice, making her sound older than she is while giving her the air of a punk rock Jodie Foster) and eager to talk. Her red hair, tattoos and piercings give the overall vibe of a young Joan Jett with Shirley Manson colouring. She is very punk rock.
Woodrow has never made a podcast before and she’s finding that it’s a “very, very different beast” to radio, “especially because I’m a one woman show.” She selects her own guests and does all the research, editing, production and voiceovers herself. When it comes to finding interviewees, “I always cold call people, and I just hope that they say yes and they basically always do.”

Book Review: Under the Big Black Sun
Tumblr media
I grew up constantly bouncing between the San Fernando Valley and Orange County in SoCal during the 80s and 90s at a time when punk, post punk, and new wave were deeply entrenched in the landscape thanks to the efforts of DJ Rodney Bingenheimer and KROQ. It was a time of change, with Alternative and Grunge coming onto the scene with Nirvana and Sonic Youth, but at the same time bands like X were held in a state of godlike reference.
This was before the internet, before spotify, before even cds! I would bum rides from anyone and everyone to go to all ages shows, even managing to convince a friends older brother to take us all the way up to Gilman st in the bay area!
But the thing is... there was another story ... a story about the scene before my experiences... the scene in the late 70s and early 80s where anything went, where art, and music, and style all merged and began. I’d heard people talk about those days, the days of the Masque club and Brendan Mullen, and the Canterbury Apartments... I was lucky enough to go to the Hong Kong Cafe a few times when it reopened in the 90s, and I heard tales of how it USED to be and we all watched The Decline of Western Civilization (on vhs!) which had been shot there!
I had bootlegs and tapes from bands that no longer existed, stuff from the Germs, The Screamers, and The Minutemen. I knew D.Boon was from Pedro and that he was dead, but that was all I knew... and yet I fucking LOVED their songs.
So when I grabbed this book, I sat down to read it hoping to find an enjoyable overview of who was who and what was what. Instead what I found was a history book, an academic primary source of how the LA Punk scene was, how it began, who the major players were, and how it changed over time thanks to the influx of violent OC punks and heroin.
Instead of a single author, you have differing experiences and viewpoints from the people who were there. People like John Doe and Exene Cervenka from X, Jane Wiedlin from the Go-Gos, Pleasant Gehman, El Vez, Henry Rollins, Mike Watt, and more.
Some chapters are better than others, Mike Watt’s is an homage to D.Boon in the most loving way, as well as a history of the scene from their San Pedro perspective. Jane Wiedlin’s chapter is probably the best written and most informative. Together with Charlotte Caffery, you get a real experience of what that time was like and how things all happened from the drugs, to the fashion, to just who was who. Jack Grisham’s chapter, in contrast is barely worth inclusion, and I’m saying that as someone who really does love a lot of T.S.O.L songs... he’s just a big piece of shit. Dave Alvin digs into Cowpunk and the Blasters experiences playing with bands like Black Flag which is really good, but I was disappointed in Henry Rollins addition to the book. I’ve heard him speak, and read his words elsewhere and expected a lot more.
If you have any interest in the bands, the music, the scene, or in Los Angeles culture at all, you’ll love this book, hands down. It’s the only book on the topic that really captures the geographical divides that exist here, and that punk overcame. Where you had bands from Chula Vista/San Diego, San Pedro, Hollywood, the Valley, the beach cities, as well as East L.A’s unique chicano/latino contributions to early punk.
The thing you hear over and over is how art and inclusion of all sorts of outcasts is how it began, but then it became corporate and overrun by violence and anger and exclusion. How women were a major force in the beginning, and how they became excluded and pushed out later.
This was not my generation... I came after.... but it is because of all of these people, the music they made, the clothes and style they created, and all that they did in a fuel of alcohol and drugs that laid the foundation for what I was able to experience. This is their history, this is their story, this is what happened from their own mouths. Too many of their friends and bandmates are dead, but they lived and thanks to this book, we have their stories.
5 out of 5 stars

Subject: Books.General Non-Fiction.Music.Punk
Description: Under the Big Black Sun explores the nascent Los Angeles punk rock movement and its evolution to hardcore punk as it's never been told before. Authors John Doe and Tom DeSavia have woven together an enthralling story of the legendary West Coast scene from 1977 to 1982 by enlisting the voices of people who were there. The book shares chapter-length tales from the authors along with personal essays from famous (and infamous) players in the scene. Additional authors include: Exene Cervenka (X), Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Mike Watt (The Minutemen), Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go's), Dave Alvin (The Blasters), Chris D. (Flesh Eaters), Jack Grisham (T.S.O.L.), Teresa Covarrubias (The Brat), and Robert Lopez (The Zeros, El Vez) as well as scenesters and journalists Pleasant Gehman, Kristine McKenna, and Chris Morris. Through interstitial commentary, John Doe "narrates" this journey through the land of film noir sunshine, Hollywood back alleys, and suburban sprawl - the place where he met his artistic counterparts, Exene, DJ Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom - and formed X, the band that became synonymous with and in many ways defined L.A. punk. Under the Big Black Sun shares stories of friendship and love, ambition and feuds, grandiose dreams and cultural rage, all combined with the tattered, glossy sheen of pop culture weirdness that epitomized the operations of Hollywood's underbelly. Listeners will travel to the clubs that defined the scene as well as to the street corners, empty lots, apartment complexes, and squats that served as de facto salons for the musicians, artists, and fringe players that hashed out what would become punk rock in Los Angeles.
