I started watching the show assuming (from pictures and such) that Sydney and C*rmy are the main couple. I didn't even know Richie existed.
But having finished the second season just now, I can't feel anything romantic between Syd and C*rmy. I expected to like them together, even to ship them at least a little. But I just don't.
Syd and Richie on the other hand? Wow.
In season 1, where they absolutely hate each other most of the time, their interactions are already so meaningful:
- The first time that we as viewers see Richie be vulnerable, Syd sees it too.
- His worry whether she is okay after the gunshots. Should be normal between colleagues, but... they used to dislike each other so much...
- When Syd resolves the fight between the gangsters, Richie looks at her in irritation, but also almost... awe? It also makes him actively change at this point already, actively change himself and how he sees certain things.
It's really a testament to the writing of this show, to the complexity of its characters that Richie is such a scumbag in season 1, in some ways saying exactly what you'd expect a guy like him to say, yet he could have been so much worse. He never crosses a certain line. And then in season 2, he becomes so much better.
Their interactions kind of hit me like a freight train - completely unexpected, raw, realistic, extremely emotional, almost forceful.
Thematically, too. The very new one and one of the oldest. At the beginning: always at each other's throats. Fighting, pulling, pushing. Is it possible that they might find peace with each other? Find even more?
The structure of season 2 had the main cast interact less, and since Syd and C*rmy were the ones working most closely together, I was sure that the strange vibes I got between her and Richie would disappear in favour of Syd/C*rmy. But except for the table scene (which I just didn’t read as romantic, more a continuation of Syd's personal arc), there were very few meaningful scenes between Syd and C*rmy.
There weren't many big scenes between Syd and Richie either, but... nobody really expected them to. However, we did get two scenes of weird awkwardness, like they didn’t know how to behave around each other without fighting. (her jumping away when nearly bumping into him! Their weird interaction when she's seeing him in a suit for the first time! "You smell good"?! Wtf? Ultimately it probably means nothing but I can't stop thinking about it!!) And of course the one scene in the last episode, when they are more than amicable colleagues - they are the perfect team without ever training together, same focus, same drive to make things exactly as they should be, helping each other, supporting each other and being impressed by each other.
It's just so weird how Sydrichie completely surprised me. I wouldn't even call it only "chemistry" or something. It's their entire dynamic, the way they made each other madly, almost exaggeratedly emotional in season 1, then went on parallel paths apart from each other - did some soul searching, improved themselves - and ended up as this weirdly perfect force together. I never expected it. I've never seen anything like it.
Right now, I think there's a 50:50 chance that in canon nobody of The Be*r's staff gets romantically involved, or that Syd gets together with M*rcus. No other option is realistic. But I'll be thinking about her with Richie for a good long while.

if dorian didn't show up, do you think louis would have shot minnie?
I do. I know some people think either he wouldn't have or he would've missed so that's why the writers had him shoot Dorian instead, but mmmmmm no, I don't personally think so. I like to think that if he had taken the shot, his shaky hands would've caused him to shoot her fatally.
Mostly because I'm already so normal about the fact that of the Ericson crew, Marlon and Louis are the only ones with a body count. Well, that we know of, but shown to us in the game, at least. Plus, we know it's Louis' first kill.
Like yeah, Clementine and AJ become part of the crew and they have bigger body counts, and if we're counting indirect kills caused by actions, then Tenn has a count... and I guess everyone has blood on their hands for blowing up the boat... but I'm talking about killed directly with a weapon like....... I lied, I'm not normal about that at all, Louis and Marlon are the ones who have killed someone in Louis' route. I'm also not normal about the fact that Louis kills Dorian and then even as he's clearly in shock, he tries to go with Clementine to get AJ, and then later on when they talk about it, he says it feels like bile but not quite and he's glad he has it in him to do it.... listen, listen, listen... I'm obsessed with that.
Anyway, so if Louis shot Minerva, I think he would've accidentally killed her and can you imagine? He's already enough of a mess after killing the woman who pinned him down and tried to cut his finger off [or succeeded] but he knew Minerva, they were friends before the twins were taken. Even Violet couldn't kill her even though that would've been the smarter thing to do, and we know thanks to meta knowledge that killing her would've saved lives, but Violet couldn't, and I don't think Louis would intentionally either.
Speaking of Violet, if Louis killed Minerva, I hate to think about what that would've done to Vi. I think she might've actually left at that point, like what was planned before it got changed to her being burned. I don't think she would've attacked Louis over it, though, like yeah she attacked Clementine in the cell but Louis? I don't know, but I don't think so just because it's Louis and he'd be a mess about it anyway.
Though if he did kill her, it would be a neat parallel to draw... y'know, because Louis forgave AJ for killing Marlon even though he was pissed and heartbroken, and Violet was annoyed with him the entire time... but could she ever forgive Louis for killing Minerva? Y'know? We already have a similar parallel with AJ shooting Tenn, but still.
If Clementine killed Minerva in that moment, though, then I could see Violet attacking her since in her eyes, Clem proved her right.
So yeah, I get why they added the Dorian kill to his route. It adds another compelling element to Louis as a character, but we also need Minerva alive for episode 4; Louis can't kill her, he can't miss, and he's not going to stay with her because we need Violet to stay on the boat and him to be on shore for all routes.
#asks#twdg louis#twdg minerva#twdg clementine#twdg violet#twdg marlon#twdg tenn#honestly whenever i see someone say louis is the boring option i'm just like '.......that's your opinion but also how can you say that??'#then again i'm sure other people look at me saying violentine just isn't for me and they say the same thing so y'know... i can't talk haha#also time is such a weird thing because i look at the entire cell scene in louis' route and like... i'm not even mad about violet anymore#like yeah i still don't believe she was brainwashed like i'm sorry y'all only believe that because kent said something about it#not because there's all this evidence toward it in game like vi being pissed at clementine makes sense she doesn't need to be brainwashed#for it to work like her being vulnerable and easily manipulated into submission makes perfect sense especially with minerva there#it's like everyone was pissed that she attacked clementine and people needed a way to excuse it so it's not violet's fault when like...#that's literally what makes it interesting like calm down it's okay if violet is pissed and scared and behaves accordingly#also my controversial opinion of the day that i'll hide here in the tags so maybe people won't find it sksksk but#I personally find the concept of vinerva and the doomed tragedy of it more compelling than anything violentine did#like i'll defend violentine and i do believe it's an important and good ship it's just not my personal favorite#anyway but then the whole thing with lilly and minerva is so good and louis screaming FUCK YOU at minerva?? amazing love it so good#i love when the soft character who never chooses violence is so pissed off that all that anger they have boils to the surface and it's raw#like... he's SO mad he's SO furious he's SOOO UPSET like he wasn't even like this when marlon died or anything like he hit his limit#and then shooting dorian through the mouth while an accident is just well done i love it and i love his reaction of mortification#and apologizing and YET he still tries to go with clementine he's trembling and can barely string together a sentence but he wants to go#he wants to help her he wants to save aj THAT is the gut reaction he has after everything that just went down#'louis isn't loyal or good for clem because of the vote' babe tell me you don't understand any nuance of louis' character without telling m#it's fine IT'S FINE you don't have to agree and i just have to remind myself that it's fine not everyone likes louis we're okay#this drives me crazy in the best way like y'know what? i love the cells scene in louis' route all of it even the stuff i used to rant about#even the stuff that used to piss me off now i'm just like 'no wait past cj was dumb she wasn't looking at it this way aaaaaaaa' sksksks#that was my tag ted talk about the cell scene thank you

honestly i'll still never forgive how the fandom demonized elise and chris for over 2 decades
chris is an only child who's parents care more about their jobs than their child, he isn't exactly close with his friends and obviously wants to be closer to them but holds himself back and people view him as a selfish, whiny rich brat who's obsessed with sonic when in reality he's just a 12 year old who views sonic as an older brother and is desperate to keep that connection with him but always apologizes for his selfish actions and fully expects backlash and hate from everyone else for what he did. also guys, he isn't rich. his parents are. i ain't seeing them giving him an allowance
elise is also an only child who's mother died when she was little, had a fire demon sealed inside of her and was told to never cry or else she would be the reason that the universe would end, then her father died. bro imagine being like 10 and finding that shit out. now she's the sole heir to the throne and has to run the kingdom ON HER OWN and has to literally keep her emotions at bay as to make sure that the universe doesn't stop existing. she didn't fall in love with sonic at first sight, are y'all serious?? they developed a bond over the course of the game and she caught feelings. sonic taught her how to be free, how to be happy, how to FEEL again. and now he's dead? BECAUSE OF HER? she must be fucking racked with guilt for EVERYTHING. but people view her as an animal fucker and necrophiliac. i fucking hate you guys

think this was probably one of my favorite scenes of Syd and Carmy; just because of how raw it is. both of them have decent hopes for that absolute oversalted mess of a dish, and they're both just SO DRAMATIC about the unexpected outcome.
(note: i know chef's are very particular with their work and are often very hyperbolic when something in a dish seems to go wrong. i'm a cook, i experience this frequently. it just makes this scene that much cuter and funnier.)

One of my favourite hcs in DabiHawks fandom is that Hawks doesn't give a fuck about Dabi's scars, he's not scared of them and even cherishes them.
This is much more powerful than mere romance, this is a conventionally attractive man looking over what people consider scary and gross because he doesn't care. He accepts Dabi as a whole and loves him especially because of this, because those scars are the proof of how strong and brave he is.
What makes it even better is Dabi finding himself changing his opinion on Hawks' because of this, 'cause he thought Hawks would be a self-aborbed hero like everybody else, and instead Hawks doesn't even realize how handsome he is, he doesn't care about his looks at all, he's just there to save people. Despite everything the HPSC made him do, despite what happened to him, he really, deeply is good at heart, the first true hero Dabi has ever met.
And people say DabiHawks is toxic.
Them being toxic to each other is an AU for this fandom.

Well if she weren't saying the truth she could've just answered "Uh... what?" a "Hm, no" or being more harsh with a "As if I would have time to worry about this"

i saw the post of some lestappie talking abt how lstpn being the exact opposite of brocedes fills them with warmth and i genuinely can’t understand what they meant by that 😭 the only ‘exact opposite’ between them is that charles said him and max hated eachother while brocedes did everything together and wanted to accomplish everything together (like becoming f1 teammates and world champions)
it’s also funny how some ppl think max and charles would be fine if they became teammates just cause they’re somewhat friends now. after a while they wouldn’t be any more friendly than brocedes were in 2016 💀 but it wouldn’t be nearly as sad as brocedes cause they don’t have the history for that. if someone told me abt lstpn racing against eachother in karting and later doing the same thing in f1 i’d be like aw great but if someone told me the brocedes history i’d fully think they’re just giving me a summary of a book or fanfiction
ohhh more lestappen rants, welcome welcome
lestappen are the opposite of brocedes in the sense that they're completely drama-free, tension-free and just generally have nothing going on.
if max and charles became teammates we'd be in similar trenches as max/daniel teammate era. generally having a good time but also wanting to beat the other but it is never - and i repeat never - as deep as brocedes. they would be much friendlier than brocedes in 2016. brocedes had history for their entire lives, spent holidays together, dreamt of being in f1 together, went karting together in the same team. then they became teammates and the jealousy got so strong that they threw everything they had away for that world championship title. and it still stings!
and lestappen.... had a little childhood rivalry, in two seasons of karting. i bet they both had that with many more drivers at that time. drivers we'll never know bc they didn't make it to f1. and now in f1 charles and max aren't rivals the way brocedes were. they'll never get there because they don't have what brocedes had.
and YEAH you're so so right. lestappen history is like oh yeah that sounds fair, small world and all. pretty cool they're both in f1 now.
and brocedes is like. no way this happened. this is the most wild fanfic/novel ever and it's so unrealistic and it's so real.

But Byler is central to the main plotline of the show in Season 5? It’s directly connected to the supernatural horror stuff with Vecna, Will’s coming-of-age journey, the painting miscommunication, the central queer themes of the show, Mike’s character arc, El’s character arc… literally everything. What do you MEAN they don’t have time to execute Byler? What do you think they’ll be doing in Season 5? 😭😭😭
I don't disagree with all that. I mean theres going to be 8 or 10 episodes. That there are 12-14 characters who all have their own plots within the show. Stranger things is an ensemble show. The Party + El and Max are the mains, but the adults and the older teens are also important. Will and Mike do not exist only to each other. Yeah there's a lot happening for them, but Will has friendships with Dustin, Lucas, Max, and El as well as with Mike. He has very important ties to his mom and Jonathan. Mike has friendships with them all too. The show has always been more plot driven than character driven. It's weakness has always been romantic relationships, especially if those relationships aren't max and Lucas and they are starting/ending. We see it in the way side characters aren't developed very well, in the way Steve and Nancy broke up, or how Nancy and Jonathan or Joyce and hopper got together. I'm saying that, for the rest of the party to actually be present, to address Max's coma, to have some kind of plot for the adults and older teens to do so they aren't useless (not to mention the Romo happening there and the love triangle S4 reignited in another example of the show not nailing Romo ships), for them to all avert the apocalypse, and give byler a chance to come together in a way that isn't stilted or awkward or that makes one or the other look bad, the writing will have to be sharp. Perhaps impossibly sharp. It Has to use every moment well, and absolutely miraculously be the best romance writing of the series. Which, in my opinion, is the most likely thing to fall short. At this point I'm split fifty fifty on it going canon in a way that just... doesn't feel well thought out or epic in the way some folks are saying it will be, (hope I'm wrong about it!) or the series ending with the emphasis on platonic love and belonging, Will coming out and being accepted by his friends, that they still might fumble (hope I'm wrong again!)

I don't necessarily eniteley hate Saberza. Hell, I feel bad that the line about them being siblings is about to get some people hella fucking dog piled. Because the level of vitriol they're about to catch is gonna be unnecessarily bad and for a fictional ship, at that. But, I'm not gonna lie and say I'm upset that some people are gonna stop shipping it. Cause that line was music to my fucking ears.
I hate how the ship appears 98% of the time. It's so fucking boring and such a fucking Het (Derogatory) Ship, even if they're both queer. It also appeals to the group that defangs female characters so they're the correct kind of soft for shipping.
Let, Sabine and Shin Hati be Feral Queers with each other. Want Ezra with a Wren? Tristan is right there. We can be so much more interesting and fun that the flour take of Sabezra.
I feel bad that the line about them being siblings is about to get some people hella fucking dog piled. Because the level of vitriol they're about to catch is gonna be unnecessarily bad and for a fictional ship, at that.
I truly, honestly sympathize with the Sabezra shippers and hope (a fool's hope; SW fans are the Worst™) that the fandom at least has the decency to practice the "block and ignore" and "your ship is not my ship and that's ok" policies because, like you said, it's all just make-believe crap and no reason to be an ass to people online.
But yeah, nonny, I also share your sentiment about the whole "thank fuck we dodged another boring-ass vanilla het ship"—and I don't say that out of hatred for M/F ships, but more so the absolute gut-wrenching failure on the part of professional writers to build a legitimately interesting, believable, complex (not conflicted, but complex in the sense of being fully fleshed-out, built upon something other than just raw sexual attraction) relationship between a male and female character without gutting their entire development arcs and reducing them to soppy banal cliches. (Like what you mentioned about writers "defanging" female characters to make them softer and more likeable. Yeah, that shit reeks. I'm not going to fault fanfic authors for not having unlearned this subtle-yet-deeply-ingrained flavor of misogyny yet—it's going to take a while to root out something so pervasive and insidious—but I am going to hold the professionals fully accountable for delivering egregious, sophomoric drivel and telling us it's Grade-A storytelling.)
Fantastic M/F ships can be done. Look at Pacific Rim. Literally any Hayao Miyazaki film featuring two main characters of the opposite sex.
Or maybe it's time to forget the "confirmed ship" stuff altogether and leave the entire relationship open to interpretation, like what people have been doing with Sabezra for the last nine years. (And what canon queer relationships/characters have been dealing with for decades, relegated to hints and easily-censored dialogue, keeping it "toned down" and "wholesome" to appeal to straight audiences who still hate them at the end of the day. But I digress.)
Bottom line, I think if writers spent more time focused on the story and individual characters instead of trying to set the boy up with the girl, it would do wonders for the quality of storytelling as well as preventing this caustic Pavlovian reaction we (I) are starting to have any time we're offered male/female romance onscreen. That's my opinion, anyway.
