in the wake of all this new information during COVID, do you feel that maybe we should all just be masking all the time, COVID of no COVID? I mean it can't be the only airborne disease out there and immunocompromised ppl have always and will always exist so like. Following that thinking even if we don't have COVID we could still be risking other people's health (and lives) with other diseases we may have right? Idk I'm stressing a lot about this do I just need to wear a mask outside forever cos. Masks mess with my breathing and sensory issues and stuff but. I don't wanna?? Kill people by accident??? Aaaaa

Hello, thanks for reaching out about this.

I saw this ask about a month ago, and I needed time to think about how I'd respond to it (so I want to thank you for the patience!).

I'll try to answer all of this to the best of my ability, and I thought I'd answer this by going backwards (responding to the last things you said and then moving up with responding to the first things you said).

Everything is below the cut because this is very long!

First I'll try to summarize what I think you're asking here:

"Vulnerable people exist in this world all around me, therefore does this mean I'm constantly posing a threat to those vulnerable people's safety when I don't mask? The thought of this brings me feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety."

I find this is hard to answer candidly without risking stressing out you or anyone else who's aware of the consequences of their choice not to mask. Nonetheless, my honest answer is: yes, choosing not to mask means risking the lives and safety of vulnerable people, i.e. the disabled, immunocompromised, elderly, children & babies, and those that intersect those groups. That risk can take place directly (such as interacting with an immunocompromised elder) or indirectly (such as interacting with the parent of a disabled child).

I also want to add that it's not only those groups that need protecting. I firmly believe that regardless of your age and/or whether or not you self-identify as disabled or immunocompromised that everyone is at risk of the long-term consequences of this rapidly mutating, vascular, and immunosuppressive virus. No one is invincible to this, and I'll add: not even if you're vaccinated (still get vaccinated if you can, but know that you can still catch covid & develop long covid regardless of your vaccination status).

1. "Masks mess with my breathing and sensory issues."

I understand how that can be difficult to deal with, trust me. There are specific masks (such as most standard KN95s) that irritate the hell out of my face after a certain point. The way those specific masks brush against the hairs of my cheeks just make me want to rip the mask off my face completely. Finding alternatives has been a lifesaver, and they've allowed me to get through the day without wanting to maul someone lol. I don't know what masks you have tried out already, so I'll just recommend the one's I like as well as the one's I've heard good reviews on from people that also have sensory issues:

NIOSH 3m Aura N95 Respirators

Flo Mask

GATA Mask (Haven't tried this one yet, but I've heard a LOT of people say this has been a game changer for them because of how comfortable it is & how it doesn't trigger much sensory issues at all due to its silicone material. Probably the only con I've heard is the chance of the build up of moisture in the mask after a long period of use & water possibly dripping on your face— this happens to me sometimes with my Flo Mask. Edit on Sept. 26, 2023: I tried GATA Mask, and I personally have a tough time getting a comfortable fit & seal with it, even when getting the small/medium size for adults to see if it'll make a difference, and the nose bridge shape not fitting well for me is a huge con. Customer service is just suggesting I spend more, so I'll just give this one a break, for now at least. A lot of other people seem to like it though.)

Halyard FLUIDSHIELD [ASTM Level 3] Mask (My mom works in a hospital, and these are masks she brings home from work. They're VERY comfortable for me, especially when I'm masking at home. I recommend finding a way to tighten the loops that go around your ears to prevent as much gaps around the mask as possible. If tight loops hurt your ears easily, I recommend a mask brace.)

O2 Nose Filters (I haven't tried these out yet as well, but I've seen videos demonstrating how effective these are at filtering out SOOO many unseen particles. I don't recommend using these alone of course, because there's still a risk of inhaling harmful aerosols through your mouth. I would recommend using this as a reinforcement of the protective measures you take. For example: adding on a comfortable surgical mask— ideally one with a high filtration efficiency like the previous suggestion— with the nose filters. I think these nose filters would be great if you're removing your mask real quick to take a sip of water or if you're outdoors with enough distance from crowded areas & groups.)

In the ideal world, more people would mask during this on-going pandemic so those that deal with sensory issues and/or those that straight-up can't wear a mask due to medical reasons wouldn't have to worry so much about choosing between existing & risking their health. For now, we just have to find alternatives.

2. "Do I need to wear a mask outside forever?"

My answer to this is: yes until further notice. There's no foreseeable end to this pandemic right now, but it would be worth the patience to wait for adequate tech, treatment, and cures for covid-19 to be released before even thinking about getting loose with masking.

Societal mandates have been dropped way too soon, and public health in regards to covid-19 is being forced on us as an individual responsibility. As a consequence, this gives this rapidly mutating virus a lot of wiggle room to spread and do whatever it wants. This means doctors and experts don't have much answers yet for adequate treatment because there's a MAJOR lack of containment (such as masking & quarantining) and documentation (such as testing & reporting). This isn't to say there hasn't been any advancements whatsoever: for example, Washington University just developed a breath test for covid that gives results in just 1 minute! This is great news! And this is just one reason why it's very necessary for those who can mask to mask, so scientists are given more time to roll out helpful solutions & tools sooner.

Another thing I'll add is if you're symptomatic and/or are positive for covid, you should 100% be wearing a mask no matter what, point blank period. I say "and/or" because it is VERY much possible to have covid and not experience any symptoms at all; this is a major reason why it's necessary to mask up in public consistently, because you can't always know who you bump into that may have covid or not.

3. "Even if we don't have covid, we could still be risking other people's health (and lives) with other diseases we may have right?"

Yes, there is a possibility of spreading airborne diseases to vulnerable people unknowingly— without the protective & preventative tools that is.

I can only speak for America because that's the cultural zeitgeist I grew up in, but: I feel like many of us can agree that, unless you worked in a healthcare setting, what was "normal" (in America) before 2020 when it came to airborne illness prevention was definitely not the regular use of a mask. American health education mainly taught us if we're coughing & sneezing to try to do so in a tissue or into your elbow, as well as frequently wash our hands. That doesn't account for the way air actually works though. For instance, if someone with the common cold coughed into the inside of their elbow, the particles they coughed out are still able to linger in the air because their elbow isn't creating a tight seal around their mouth (their elbow may have caught the droplets from their cough— which are bigger & heavier— but the smaller, lighter aerosols would just spread around similar to how smoke does); it's the difference between 😪 vs 😶‍🌫️. The only sure way for the germs they've coughed out to be blocked from spreading to other people is if they wear a well-fitted, quality mask/respirator.

I feel like health education from a young age should include the benefits of masking; that way it would be easier to adapt to the need to put on a mask to protect ourselves & others as a collective. It would be phenomenal & wonderful if we as a collective were used to masking the same way we're used to putting on socks before putting on our shoes.

4. "Immunocompromised people have always and will always exist"

Yes, that is true. And that means necessary measures taken to protect them, as well as other vulnerable people, should be the standard.

5. "[Covid] can't be the only airborne disease out there"

Of course not. There's plenty of them. However, not all airborne diseases are the same, nor should they be treated as such. What's been observed in regards to the long-term effects of covid is not at all the same with other airborne diseases. Covid is a highly contagious virus that is more than just a respiratory disease. Its goal is to attack your immune system, nervous system, heart, brain, and/or other vital organs. That's what viruses do. They act smart and sneaky, and they have the capability to trigger illnesses in your body that you may not have had pre-infection:

Chickenpox is known to lead to shingles

Epstein-Barr is known to lead to mono

HPV is known to lead to cancer

Covid-19 has been found to lead to:

POTS

ME/CFS

Stroke & Heart attack

Alzheimer's

Dementia

"Brain Fog"; Memory & Concentration Problems

The list goes on, and these are only what we know of. Covid may not be the only airborne disease, but it definitely is a dangerous one with serious, long-term negative effects.

6. "Do you feel that we should all be masking all the time, whether or not covid-19 exists?"

In regards to masking with the existence of covid:

Yes. Masking is a vital method in the prevention of catching & spreading covid-19, because it is primarily spread through the air.

In regards to masking without the existence of covid:

See my answer for number 3, and also: given the fact wearing a mask can only do more good than harm for most folks, I don't see why not. Imagine a world where we don't have to worry about flu season or allergy season anymore because those aerosols are filtered out from consistent mask wearing. Sounds like the dream to me lol.

After leaving the family he kinda got into this very...unhealthy kind of behavior in which he basically either spent his time working A Lot (or doing some side gigs bc no matter how smart you are i doubt a junior chemist's salary in udl would let you pay for your rent and necessities properly) or spent in clubs or sitting all alone at his apartment doing something or having sex. ok idk about headcanons because i think it's more that i appreciate their relationship in canon than that i have headcanons? like i said a few asks ago though there is a lot more id like to see explored in their relationship, particularly them figuring out their miscommunications and acting-in-the-name-of-each-other issues

so yeah i like to think that they eventually have a talk about that? even if it's like a few years later that it finally comes up. because while i think izzy kind of realized how much alec was shielding him from the lightwood's expectations i don't think alec ever figured out that izzy kept trying to rebel so alec could see that he could, too, and how she just wanted him to accept himself, basically

so it would be nice to see this talk happening and these things actually being said and the both of them realizing that if they had just communicated and worked together the whole time instead of assuming what the other needed and trying to take these stereotypical roles for them they would have probably gotten somewhere a lot faster and hurt each other a lot less lol. also like, alec really has to learn how to work with the people he loves instead of in their name, so i think he’d benefit a lot from this talk

other than that uhhh

i think part of the reason izzy misunderstood alec's struggle with coming out so much (i.e. thinking that he was in denial) was because she was projecting, lol. and when like after years and years izzy realized that all her comments about girls and her lowkey over-the-top investment in alec's love life/having alec accept himself were really not as straight as she thought, she is like. ah shit. so I was the one in denial the whole time? and alec just smiles and pats her shoulders like "glad you caught up, iz"

she never hears the end of it. The Revenge Of Alec. literally getting on her ass all damn day throwing in jokes about accepting herself and "being open" and all and she's like "OKAY alec i get it i'm sorry!!"

in all seriousness though, i like to think that they actually talked about all the s1 shit. kinda similar to that other talk about acting in the name of each other (honestly i think it's hard to talk about one without talking about the other) and izzy saying that she thought alec was a denial case and alec saying that he felt like izzy was trying to force him to come out when he COULDN'T and it made him feel kind of terrified. and izzy apologizing for making him feel like that, you know?

alec eventually starts going with her to her narcotics anonymous meetings. not all the time ofc because izzy needs to be able to have her own space where she can talk without the presence of anyone she knows, but sometimes. so alec can get educated and on days when it's particularly hard for her. having the support of her big brother always helps

for so long izzy was the only source of like... actual good touch and warmth and just affection, you know? and i think they are very tactile. we did get to see some of that in the show (name ONE other person alec has hugged. other than magnus who is his literal boyfriend/husband, and even then i think they might have hugged less than alec and izzy did) but i think they are actually even more tactile when there are no eyes on them. izzy comes visit alec in the loft and magnus goes to the living room to find alec and izzy full on spooning, alec carressing izzy's hair like it's the most normal thing in the world

they are used to having to stop when other ppl come, particulalrly family, tho (remember when maryse caught izzy and max playing and acted like it was a crime?) so like they are a little jumpy. but with parents who denied them affection (or had it be conditional to them doing shit they wanted, in alec's case) and sh's gross no-touching culture, they needed each other for that and they always could get comfort in each other

i mentioned max and i just ugh i loved izzy so much in her scenes with him and i think alec would be so proud of what a good big sister she is?? and she's like "i'm just trying to be like you" and he's like "shut up" but pulls her into a hug

No matter what

Oikawa Tooru is the grand king of Seijoh. He was handsome, smart, and all that. He was very athletic and observant. He gets along with everyone and anyone. He could get any girl to swoon to him but he is only loyal to volleyball and Iwaizumi. And that’s what people thought, but this king has fallen off his throne. He, has fallen in love and doesn’t know what to do. It started with the little things like seeing how she loves skinship or how she hates spicy food. He thought it was normal, he was observant after all. But as time passes, he realized that he might be falling. He tried and tried to avoid it, knowing that it might just hurt him in the end anyway. He knew that he wasn’t going to be able to fulfil what was in her heart because he would always choose volleyball. Oikawa had a girlfriend once, she left him because he wasn’t good enough, and he didn’t give her enough of his time.

Oikawa did not want that to happen again. He didn’t want his heart torn into pieces yet again. But still, he fell deep into the rabbit hole called love. And he hated her for it, becoming her enemy for no reason at all. But, fate seemed to be in his side. Soon enough the “mortal nemesis” relationship faded away and love soon blossomed. It wasn’t as smooth as most people would say but it’s still a beautiful sight to behold. The way Oikawa looks at her with so much love and passion, it’s breathtaking. The way that she would cheer for him no matter what, it’s alluring. A love so pure that it seems surreal and impossible. From then on, the great king knew that she was thee one. He knew that even if he was too busy, she would understand. He knew that she would always be by his side no matter what the cost is.

And he knew that no matter what happens, he would always love her. Volleyball may be his priority, but he will soon get out of it. Slowly but surely, the walls he built was crumbling away. Slowly but surely, his distant exterior grows into an attached and close koala. Oikawa’s train of thought was then shattered as he heard someone calling out to him. “Oi Shittykawa, why the hell is your face like that?” Iwaizumi said as he cringed at the sight. “Geez Iwa-chan, can’t a guy think about his soulmate in peace?” He then responded as he glared at the shorter male. “We have a game to play, Stupidkawa. And if you miss her so bad, why don’t you go to her at the stands and talk to her?” Iwaizumi said as he glared intently at his best friend. “I have a better idea,” Oikawa said as he stood up. His eyes wandered around the bleachers to find his one and only. And soon enough, he was able to see her long black wavy hair and her beautiful eyes. “Princess!” He yelled.

The female then smiled and waved at the player adorning the cyan colors with the number one. “Yes, my prince?” She yelled back. “Oh! My darling Princess! I love you with all my heart and know that no matter what, I’ll still be in love with you,” He yelled. The stadium awed at the interaction. Oikawa now found his one and only, his soulmate. And he would never let go, no matter what.

Got my diceroller out for Maximum Random and YEET we got a 46, which is MIHKAN.

Aaaaa I love Mihkan. My dork ass mirialan enby hunter I love him so much.

He's like, several existential crises in a trenchcoat (literally, since he wears one) bullshitting his way through it by trying Very hard to ignore the fact that he has horrible background thoughts on Fate. Very fatalistic approach to Existing which isn't great for him but like, that's what being a dork is for. ✨Ignoring Your Problems✨

Mihkan's like, they're a good person though. He's a VERY good person, and it's gotten him in trouble more than once and earned him a few stab wounds. Because he'll put himself in danger for other people, even people he doesn't know. He fights like he's a tank, and he's NOT. He's not durable, not in the slightest, but that Will Not Stop Him from throwing himself bodily into harms way to prevent other people from getting hurt.

Which I can't imagine is particularly fun for Rokas (who belongs to @sith-shenanigans and who Mihkan is fckn, hopelessly in love with, and who ACTUALLY IS A TANK. And it's a good thing it's mutual <3 stuffs bc otherwise Mihkan would spend More time going 'hhhhhh' over Hot Sith, and the two of them already had Mako and Vette doing the 'JUST KISS ALREADY' in the background from how hard they were being Dumb fjdjdjd)

Also also also, along that vein, Mihkan's playlist on spotify is one of my favorite ones that I have. It's all like, upbeat fun songs, the vast majority of them being happy bubbly love songs, all sorts of that ‘being entirely drunk on the feeling of Being In Love’ shit and ‘choosing to love recklessly’ which is Adorable, and a bunch of rad bouncy electroswing songs too.

Like, Mihkan's got a lot of Lurking Existential Dread hiding behind the Sass and the Sheer Audacity he's got, but beyond that there's a lot of happiness. He spoils a lot of his own fun by thinking too much about Destiny and what that means to him, and getting him drunk gets him crying bc he's got this idea that Good Things Inevitably End ingrained in him and it's a bad time, but he's also just generally happy. He lets himself be happy.

He's happy to be able to a part of his little sister's life, that he can share the things he's learned and share what he cares about with her. He loves Rokas and is happy for every moment he gets with them, happy that he found someone unbothered by him having Maximum Audacious Little Shit energy.

Idk I just really love him. He's got a lot of underlying issues that he needs to address, bc they're getting in the way of him having fun, but he's a snarky, lightning quick nerd who wants to help and protect and believes in doing the right thing. And he refuses to accept something Shitty as something that Just Is.

He's got one of the stronger moral compasses of my characters. He's got no respect for authority or status or anything so he can be a little fuck sometimes, with no thought for the consequences of being Maximum Bastard to the wrong people, but he's good. And he really believes in doing good. And doing things for love.

He's good.

As you came to in the mostly white room, the first thing you noticed was how fuzzy everything was. It felt like your mouth was stuffed with cotton-- and it probably was. You moved your head as best as you could to look around, your eyes finding the doctor on one side of the room. A dopey smile crossed your face as you sluggishly lifted your arm in a pretty awkward wave, a slurred greeting leaving your lips.

On the other side of you, your head practically flopping to the other side, was probably the most gorgeous sight you have ever seen in your entire life. Flowing golden hair, bright green eyes, and.... wearing a cowboy hat inside.... the first words out of your mouth made them grin, “Are you an Angel...?” 

“I can be your angel if you want me to be”

The rapid fire nodding made you a bit dizzy but the laugh you heard from the person made it all feel better. You reached your hands out towards them, making grabby motions which made them laugh even more while they gently intertwined their fingers with yours. 

The doctor had briefed Gyro about what he would need to help you with while you recover and eventually said the two of you were good to go. Helping you walk out of the clinic, he listened to your laughing gas induced rambles, ranging from kittens to how soft his hair is.

Getting into the car was kind of awkward, your legs didn’t seem to want to do what you needed them to. After about five minutes of confusion and odd mumbles from you, the two of you were set and ready to head home, Gyro stopping by a fast food place to get you a cold smoothie to help with the soreness. Plus it’s not like there were many other options for you to eat after getting some teeth removed.

- the rest is going in headcanons cause I lost my flow ;^;

- He would probably be hovering constantly but thankfully it doesn’t feel suffocating

- Constantly teases you about how you called him an angel while under anesthesia 

- He definitely helps you change your gauze if you can’t do it yourself, always very gentle when he does

- Watches cute cat videos with you while you recover and feeds you the few foods you can have

-  He gets things for you since the medicine they gave you makes you really sluggish and you’d probably be prone to dropping things a lot

- Extra cuddles and kisses cause he knows you need it right now, recovery is never fun

- Does his absolute best to keep your open wounds from getting infected (also as a fair warning: constant pain and swelling after the first two or three days after surgery is a telltale sign that the removal points got infected)

I love how you potrayed their relationship, I love the "I hate you, but you are not dying on my watch", I love how they had a little conclusion to all that, even if it was just a few words, but any more would have felt off. The little insults and nicknames Dazai used were great( I don't know if you came up with them since my memory is shit and I barely remember canon stuff, but if you did, great job mate). Your writing style is amazing. The relationship between Kouyou and Chuuya was amazing as well, and it was one I never considered before now (as well as the fact Dazai has bandages because of possible old scars, not sure how). Aaaaa anon my heart. Honestly i was in such a slump yasterday after posting the fic and waking up to this ask honestly cheered me up so much, im really so happy that you liked the fic, especially the ending. I was agonizing over the ending for quite a bit because i kept trying to add stuff after their conversation but it just didnt feel right or clicked together so i ended up scraping everything, rereading the base and deciding its probably good enough as it is, tho i was plenty nervous about it because it was so short, thats why its so nice to hear that people think it works well!

Dazai was so fun to write!! Probably my favorite part of writing the fic was writing dazais dialog. I think i ended up making him a bit too much like his present day self becsuse i recently watched a dark era clip n realized that hes actually a lot more subdued there but fgfhgghg he was fun to write!!! I think most of his insults i came up on my own aside from tried and true 'chibi' but i cant be sure cuz i dont remember every one either. I was mostly thinking about 'what does dazai usually insult chuuya with' and 'what could he use to turn chuuyas behavior how he wants it here', it was really fun, hands down should write more dazai n chuuya interacting in the future.

Im really glad kouyous n chuuyas reletionshil came across well, i really tried to go for this familiar, caring reletionship with them where kouyou had her own opinions on how to do things which may be a little extreme but that she then adjusts to suit chuuyas emotional needs fhfg idk how much that came across but im planing to explore it more in the future with fics centered on chuuyas reletionships with kouyou n akutagawa, chuuya gen fic machine go brrrrrr.

I cant be sure cuz i havent been in the fandom for a WHILE and at this point what was confirmed fact and what was popular fanon are starting to mix for me but i think dazai wearing bandadges to cover scars was like a canon confirmed thing? Really not sure someone correct or confirm if you know. But what i really wanted there was to show: theres scars, theres no fresh wounds, he will always be marked by his past but hes recovering, hes getting better. Chuuya met dazai when he was on his edge when it seemed all it would take was one really bad day to end it all, thats why he was so worried when oda died. Rn the edge is still in sight but dazai has stepped away from it, hes moving in an opposite direction and he has people to walk towards to. Nit to bash on canon even tho i love to bash on canon i just like the idea of dazai getting better n recovering from his suicidal tendecies to be more appealing then 'oh hes in a better place now but he still wants to kill himself lol so funni' ghfzg im a very recovery centered person.
