David Maisel: Ancient X-Rays (2014)
History’s Shadow has as its source material x-rays of art objects that date from antiquity through just prior to the invention of photography. The x-rays have been culled from museum conservation archives, re-photographed and re-worked. Through the x-ray process, the artworks of origin become de-contextualized, yet acutely alive and renewed. The series concerns the dual processes and intertwined themes of memory and excavation.

Apollo and Dionysus at Delphi
Attic vase
Fourth century BC.
The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
Apollo, with a crown of laurel, is welcomed to Delphi by Dionysus, who is bearded and carrying the thyrsus. Between them is a palm tree, a symbol of Apollo and victory, triumph, peace and eternal life. Beneath them is the Delphic omphalos or navel, center of the world. Behind them is a palm tree, and the other figures are maenads and satyrs, followers of Dionysus.
According to the legends, Apollo entrusted Delphi to his brother Dionysus during winters. Hence during the winter season, only dithyrambs were played in the temple Delphi instead of the usual paeans and the Maenads in turn sang in the honor of Apollo as well.

my aim is to combine ancient aesthetics with modern materials. my first collections have been inspired by greek vases, mediterranean goldsmiths, and minoan frescoes. each piece is cut out using laser-cutting technology, then painstakingly glued, assembled, and polished by me in my home studio in scotland!

Gold Vase Dedicated to the Goddess Bastet
A gold vase that was found with other objects at Bubastis in the Nile Delta, among the votive offering in the temple dedicated to the cat goddess, Bastet.
The topmost decorative band is a frieze of lanceolate leaves that point downwards; the middle band has a motif of large drops, and the bottom band is a series of circles with stylized rosettes.
Finds of gold and silver plate are rare as the metals were often melted down to produce other objects. Most if not all of the vessels in Tell Basta find belonged to just such a wine service associated presumably with a temple festival.
New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1292-1189 BC. From Bubastis (Tell Basta). Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 39870 Read more

A perfume bottle in the shape of a ritual vessel (also known as a hes-vase) inlaid with a figure of a princess
Hes-vases were traditionally used in temple rituals of purification and in libations or liquid offerings. Priests would pour one out for the homies; I mean, priests would pour to the gods.
The shape resembles the hieroglyph hes, meaning 'to favour' or 'to praise'.
New Kingdom, Amarna Period; 18th Dynasty, during the reign of Akhenaten
1353-1336 BCE
