Alright.

There are a lot of conflicting emotions about having The Music Man kicking out Beetlejuice from the Winter Garden. Although I am bitter that one of my favourite musicals is being replaced in favour of money and two big names is just.. not sitting right, but I am open to everything and trying to look at everything with open eyes and an unbiased opinion.

Did Will Blum’s influence this a little? Yes.

Was the post a little unsound and unprofessional? I think so but it brought up some great points.

Yes, I agree. The fact that you are selling a name instead of a GREAT show is disrespect to the source material. Hugh Jackman is an awesome guy and his tenure as the Boy From Oz is forever embedded into Broadway his(her)story as being a stepping stone for Hugh’s career. Also you have Broadway star, Sutton Foster, another big name who, if you are a theatre lover, can’t help but fawn and scream in excitement.

We all know and love Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine/James Howlett/ Logan, that’s what people associate him as such. Fun fact he played that role from 2000-2018. Wolverine is known to be big, all muscle and raw strength, but in the theatre world we know him as a musical theatre actor. Jackman first claim to international's fame was in 1999 when he played the leading man, Curly McLain, in the film adaptation of Oklahoma! He played the titular character Peter Allen in Boy from Oz in 2004 which he won a Tony for and Jean Valjean in the film adaptation of Les Miserables in 2012 while that wasn't the best adaptation of that musical, they did include Broadway and West End actors which was awesome! And lastly the most recent entry musical/film role was P.T Barnum in The Greatest Showman, Jackman went on tour last year singing songs from The Greatest Showman and some other songs from other musicals he previously worked in. He is an amazing vocalist, actor and dancer. His performance in Boy From Oz says as such in a review by Charles Isherwood: praising Jackman but panned the show: "Jackman is giving a vital and engaging performance in this pitifully flimsy musical almost in spite of the material he’s been handed. It’s a sad waste of an exciting talent." I’m pumped.

Sutton Foster is a Broadway actress that is well known for her two-time Tony award winning performance as Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She has also roles from other shows such as: Chess, Funny Girl, Les Miserables, Anything Goes, Grease and MANY more. I knew her best as Reno Sweeney from Anything Goes, her vocals are nothing but extraordinary and her acting is nothing to sleep on, she is an excellent dancer and I cannot help to try and recreate in my bedroom when I’m alone. You can say all you want about her, but she is one of the Broadway actresses I know from the top of my head, alongside Patti LuPone, Sierra Boggess and Liza Minelli. She is also the younger sister of Hunter Foster of Little Shop of Horrors and Urinetown fame. Foster is going to be amazing as Jackman's partner in the upcoming production and honestly as a fan, I am so excited!

They are both triple threats but.. no one knows a lot about the Music Man. It is a classic and has been around since the late 50′s.

Broadway, coming into the new decade of 2020, is becoming more MODERN. All these new musicals that have come out during this past decade might not have made it to Broadway but they are more aligned with the changing times and modern settings. Though there are musicals based on films from the 80′s that reach out to that generation and reintroduce them into that mind space they were in back in the day.

American Idiot, great musical, angsty music but has that throwback niche to that rebellious stage some, or not most, of us went through in the 2000′s.

Elf, that also starred Will Blum at one point, is fan service to those who love the holiday season and those who loved the film that came out in 2003. I haven't listened to it yet BUT I WILL EVENTUALLY.

Heathers, we all love the Heathers. Also Winona Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz in the 1988 Beetlejuice film, starred as Veronica Sawyer. Like Elf, IT BRINGS INTEREST TO THAT GENERATION SO THEY COULD BUY TICKETS TO THIS SHOW THAT WAS BASED ON A FILM THEY WATCHED AS TEENS. Also can we just forget about the horrible rendition of Candy Store done by the cast of Riverdale? That never happened. NEVER. HAPPENED.

Beetlejuice, Come From Away, Ghost, Once, Book of Mormon, Finding Neverland, Newsies, Kinky Boots, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Big Fish, 21 Chump Street, Amélie, Be More Chill, Hamilton, Head Over Heels, Lazarus, School of Rock, Something Rotten!, Tuck Everlasting, Waitress, Anastasia, Hadestown, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Prom, Ain’t Too Proud, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Frozen, Mean Girls, Six, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, The Lightning Thief, Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge!, The Cher Show, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, & Juliet, Mrs. Doubtfire.

These are SOME of the MANY shows that came out this decade!

Some musicals are entirely satirical so that was a niche for audiences who love the weird and messed up humour, some musicals are named after the films or shows they were based off of. So old audiences can take interest into coming to Broadway, okay I get that because again, nostalgia, some are entirely original or had little to no source material! Some are based around history, some about civil rights issues and some of them are jukebox musicals that appeal to people who like those artists.

Broadway has always been conservative and prefers to play it safe when it comes to opening a new productions and the dominant audiences have been older and more traditional. So that stereotypical Broadway show people think of is just that, the lead character getting their “want song” in, a lot of dancing, internal or external conflict that ultimately gets resolved with cheerful songs and set pieces. Although newer audiences want those boundary pushing shows so CAN get introduced to musicals like the Music Man, it means nothing if they were never introduced to the strange and unusual first. Everyone wants to advance to find that next big thing but they can’t do that when it is all safe but we did get some of them with Cats, Beetlejuice, Carrie, Matilda The Addams Family and more.

I totally get the interest of bringing back a musical that hasn’t been on Broadway for 20 years (last performance was in 2000) and it is a great way to reintroduce an old piece back into the world again, but it was at the expense of new artists making their Broadway dream a reality. The decision to evict, not close, evict Beetlejuice from the Winter Garden was a big mistake by the Schubert Organization. The Schubert Organization is one of the biggest landlord of theatres in New York, they at least own 17 Broadway theatres. Here’s the reason why they’re so successful:

They don’t keep shows that don't bring the cold hard cash. It’s show business, it has always been about the business and never about the show. As much as we could scream and shout to keep Beetlejuice in the Winter Garden all we want, it is unfortunately their decision to keep them or boot them out. We all know that productions have to be approved by a theatre organization so that production can be leant one of their many theatres, they show also had to keep up a total of sales from tickets above that number per week. As all of you know, that’s what happened with Beetlejuice. Ticket sales dried up and fell way below the amount. There was talk around the theatre community that a production of the Music Man was in the works with Hugh Jackman as the lead. So... they saw Beetlejuice as dead weight and sought out to cash in on Hugh Jackman’s name and fame.

There was a lot of problems from the show but most of their problems came from the critics. Mixed reviews was all the show got but the biggest blows came from the New York Times and Ben Brantley saying that the show never came to that same conclusion of home and belonging like other Broadway shows. This killed their ticket sales cause everyone goes through those reviews before they see a show. However that’s the thing, Beetlejuice never wanted that. The entire creative team and the cast knew that what they had was entirely unconventional, like it was their way sticking of the middle finger at the word conventional.

There's no doubt that the Music Man, Hugh Jackman, Sutton Foster and the cast and creative team will be amazing at the Winter Garden and it is highly unfortunate that the eviction of Beetlejuice was done for the sake of financial greed. I’m glad they were only evicted and not closed, the show IS still on and the public demand for the show is high. I know a lot of us hate the decision but what could you do? It’s all about the business aspect of Broadway and never the show.

Even though Beetlejuice had its problems with its opening following the Harvey Weinstein controversy, having the Music Man revival during this time of political conflict is a little awkward. Let’s trade a sexual, murderous demon for a eulogized conman.. that seems right.

I’m sure the show will be fantastic but the circumstances leading up to the opening is shady and not shining a good light for the Schubert Organization but lets not hate the actors and the creative team of the Music Man, they didn't do anything wrong. Instead, point that dislike to corporate greed, but is okay. The show is not closed and is only evicted from the theatre. Eventually they will find a new theatre on or off Broadway for everyone’s enjoyment again! Also that National Tour is coming up in Fall 2021 I believe, I personally can’t just fly to New York but I will be watching the National Tour if it does roll by where I live.

get lit fam. abi is having a great fuckin time, drinking, dancing, everything. she can hold her own with alcohol, so she won’t be sloppy drunk, just having some fun and hanging out with her siblings

ahsoka - going with cora ren

going to have fun and to keep an eye on her family. she is armed as usual and she will be getting drunk with leia and they will be titanicing on the front of the boat so look out for that fuckin spectacle

allana - going solo (potential to change)

trying to get drunk without her foster mom catching her, will probs be avoiding her family so as to not be called out on her bullshit. will party with anyone, probably actively looking for lydia because she knows her friend is a good time

anastasia - going with dimitry

anya eloped on a ship so this is v nostalgic for her, and she’s loving every minute of it. she wants to experience everything on the ship, and will be energetically running around trying to see anything and everything

ariana - going with ben solo

she loves going to things like this, but she’s admittedly a bit awkward. she can not handle her alcohol well, so she will not be drinking much unless convinced, but she wants to dance and enjoy herself

beru - going solo (potential to change)

she has never been to something like this, and she’s honestly just curious about what’s going on. plus, her family is there, and any more time spent with them is a bonus for her

cassie - going solo (potential to change)

she’s gonna just vibe honestly. will force people to dance with her, especially if your name is kate, teddy, or billy, and will be focused more on snacking than drinking. she’ll still have a few though, probably won’t drunkenly shrink for the meme but i don’t promise

clary - going with tessa gray

clary loves any excuse to dress up and have some fun. she’s also managed to drag tessa along, mostly to make sure her friend gets out and has fun, but also so she’s not going solo

claire - going solo (potential to change)

claire kind of just shows up to these things for something to do, so she may or may not be sulking in a corner most of the night. lavender might also make sure she doesn’t we shall see. she’ll have fun if she can be convinced to do so

darcy is always a wild card at events like this, because she’s going to do everything and talk to everyone. if someone needs to be pulled into the party, darcy is your girl

davina - going solo

davina tends to get nostalgic at parties like this, they remind her of the big events in new orleans and galas the mikaelsons threw, and she misses her family. so she drinks and tries to ignore that and just have fun

ella - going solo

ella loves formal parties like this, and will be dancing around the ship, talking with everyone and having a few drinks

elphaba - going with glinda upland

does not want to be here at all, but glinda is a pink glittery force of nature. elphaba does not try anymore, just accepts her fate and tries to have fun. please entertain her, she will be drinking, possibly more than she should

eudora - going with diego hargreeves

truly just here to take her mind off the drama. she’s going to drink a bit, dance a bit, and drag diego into a photo booth once she has a few. also will be having a fun time meeting up with some friends to explore the boat

assumes this is something leia planned, and as a senator she feels like she should be there. she also has no problem with a party, giving herself a break from work and even getting a mini vacation out of it

glimmer - going with adora and entrapta

she’s baby sitting entrapta, let’s be real. the girl is way too likely to blow up something important to be left alone, and glimmer would rather do it than leave it to catra or adora

going solo, but will absolutely vibe with anyone and everyone. she’s going to be drinking (thank you i.d. that says shes in her 30′s) and will drag people into photo booths just for the meme of it. she’s a hot mess but she’s fun i promise

jaime - going solo (leaving with brienne of tarth)

is going solo, may not be leaving that was (what a simp lmao). isn’t really great at parties, because he’s used to just being on the edge of the room as a guard, but he’s trying his best

james - going with victoria

he just likes seafood okay? but he will absolutely tell anyone who asks exactly why his girlfriend is avoiding the edge of the boat. it’s his favorite story ever and no one can stop him.

lumine - going solo

please someone give this girl a drink. she’s going solo but her broke ass grandpa is following her around making sure she won’t get drunk because by his standards she’s like nine. she also wants to explore the ship a bit, see how different it is from the ones in teyvat

luna - going with ginny and neville

the silver trio are the main characters tonight and they do not take criticism thank youj. she just wants to spend time with her friends, she really doesn’t have any plans. might end up drunker than she’s intending to

lyanna - going solo

lyanna likes to make up for the decades of balls and banquets she missed out on in westeros, and party like nobodys business. her husband has to work, but that’s not going to stop her from having a blast

not really a big party person, but loves to watch the drama go down, and therefore shows up anyways. will be off to the side observing with a glass in her hand

mako’s never been to a formal event like this, and she’s honestly really excited. she wants to explore everything she can, and maybe find someone to love

mari likes going to events, especially because she gets to show off our own creations. considering how she’s seen events go in this city, she’s always ready for a fight if need be, a little bit on edge as per usual

only goes to these things to people watch and because it looks good for her boss. if she’s there with her superiors maybe they’ll give her a better story to cover. won’t drink because she doesn’t really want to be blasted, but she will eat and could be convinced to dance

love parties, and loves her girlfriend, so this is a good time for her. she’ll probably be with jeyne most of the night because she is a simp, but will be mingling and wandering around a bit as well

he’s not really a big fan of parties, after all the events he went to in the capitol, but he’s trying to get out of his comfort zone, so here he is

OH HOW DO I CHOSE ITS LIKE PICKING A FAVORITE CHILD. 1 is my fave.

Fave Roles

5. Lucy, 13. I WAS 13. It was honestly the show that made me want to do this all the time. I LOVED THE ROLE. And I was a baby and it just inspired my love of theatre so it is special to me.

4. Velma Kelly, Chicago. It’s an iconic role but I got to dance! And thats why I loved it so much!

3. Heather Chandler, Heathers. I have NEVER had as much fun as I did in Heathers. It was a great cast and great fun. Candy Store is a BOP

2. Wendla, Spring Awakening. It’s a powerful show and a deep role that really made me dig deep. It’s heavy content and I enjoyed the challenge.

1. Kim, Miss Saigon. I mean. Self explanatory. This has been my dream since I was very very young. And I get to close out my theatre career with this role. What a dream it is.

3. Persephone, Hadestown. I literally run a hadestown shitpost blog this cannot be a shock.

2. Anya, Anastasia. When I was a toddler the only movie I watched for months straight was Anastasia. It burrows deep into my heart. My grandmother was named Anastasia and came from Russia and honestly it just hits so close to home.

1. Eurydice, Hadestown. In which NOONE is shocked. this of course would be my dream. Kim in Miss Saigon was my dream but like..Eurydice may even outdo THAT.

A Guide to GP Spot Anxiety

It’s roughly a month till the GP assignments come out, and even in our semi-hiatus we’ve noticed a lot of worry over which teams will get assignments and who will be left out to dry. We put together this list so that everyone can most efficiently direct their anxious energy and prayer circles for their faves on the bubble.

Worlds Top Ten, Guaranteed Two Spots so really who cares about anything else:

When you get past the two guaranteed spots for the top ten, the things to start looking at are the World Standings and Season's Best lists. Top 24 on either guarantees you one, top 24 on both doesn't technically guarantee you two but does make it very likely. Let's break it down!

Natalia Kaliszek/Maksym Spodyriev WS 9, SB 11 Not guaranteed two, but come on. After their breakout season they're definitely walking away with two spots. They're Fine!

Sara Hurtado/Kirill Khaliavin WS 17, SB 15 Same for the reigning Spanish National Champs! Who knows what lineups they'll be facing but their spots are secure. They're Fine!

Lilah Fear/Lewis Gibson WS 21, SB 13 After the Discobrits breakout season they're almost certainly walking away with two spots. They're Fine.

Marie-Jade Lauriault/Romain Le Gac WS 15, SB 17 Deja vu. If they really need help there's always the host spot to fall back on, but either way They're Fine.

Shiyue Wang/Xinyu Liu WS 10, SB 23 All of this has happened before and all will happen again. They're Fine.

Juulia Turkkila/Matthias Versluis WS 39, SB 29 Guaranteed nothing but pretty decent chance of walking away with at least one spot, maybe even two if they cross their fingers a little and/or someone withdraws after initial selection. Better Than None

Allison Reed/Saulius Ambrulevicius WS 38, SB 30 Decent chance of getting a spot, if not in the initial selection then as a substitute if there are withdrawals later. Better Than None

Shari Koch/Christian Nuchtern WS 42, SB 34 Best chance out of the two German teams to snag a late spot, but nothing's guaranteed. GP Purgatory

Anna Yanovskaya/Adam Lukacs WS 33, SB 38 May or may not get something. They train in Russia which is helpful, but it's still up in the air. GP Purgatory

Alexandra Nazarova/Maxim Nikitin WS 32, SB 42 So it turns out that after four straight season on the Grand Prix, their chances for a fifth aren't looking as good as one would hope. Only 42nd on the SB list and with a lower World Standing than their countrymen Popova/Byelikov has left them in a dicey position. Light some candles. GP Purgatory

Misato Komatsubara/Tim Koleto WS 24, SB 39 Guaranteed one and with their host spot will probably walk away with two! Pays to be the top team from a small Fed. They're Fine!

Jasmine Tessari/Francesco Fioretti WS 34, SB 36 Landed an assignment last season but could use some candles and crossed fingers… they might get something? They're another team on the bubble - might walk away with something, but might also end up left out in the cold. GP Purgatory

Legally Guaranteed Spots: 26/60 Spiritually Guaranteed Spots: 32/60

North America, None Anxiety(or at least different anxiety):

We've seen a lot of handwringing recently, and we feel compelled to tell you not to worry. Or to at least worry more efficiently. Top five teams from Big Dance Feds get two spots, especially if they're already guaranteed one.

Christina Carreira/Anthony Ponomarenko WS 19, SB 18 Guaranteed one, may or may not get the host spot but they don't need it, stress about their attempts to claw their way through the ranks instead. They're Fine.

Lorraine McNamara/Quinn Carpenter WS 14, SB 16 See above! These plucky young Americans are in more or less the same position. They may or may not be brawling it out at the same events, but when it comes to getting assignments They're Fine.

The US ISP (International Selection Pool) is actually shockingly shallow for ice dance at this time, with only five senior teams listed and none of them needing a host pick. More might be added after further monitoring during the summer, however, so USFSA might want to hang onto one host spot just in case. Lydia Erdman and Yuri Vlasenko(8th at Nationals) had a decent showing for a brand new team, and if they've made enough progress since January they might be in the running.

There's also the question of new partnerships. The Parsons split due to Rachel's unfortunate retirement to better take care of her health, but he is continuing on. Rumor has it he's teaming up with reigning US Junior National Champion Caroline Green, which certainly is a choice one could decide to make! Potential cradle robbing situation or no, any new partnership he might form would at least be considered for a host spot if they get together in time.

Alexander Petrov(JGP competitor and 11th at Junior Nationals) has teamed up with former singles skater Livvy Shilling, so if they progress well and make a good showing at Dance Camp at the end of June they could have an auspicious start to her ice dance career and their partnership.

The Shibs(WS 30) should get two from the Returning Couple Rule if they come back this season, but it's a month till assignments come out and they have not stated any intention to compete. Still worth noting just in case.

Marjorie Lajoie/Zachary Lagha WS 22, SB 21 Guaranteed one, will almost certainly get two, and probably won't even need the host pick. Quite a few Junior World Champions and Medalists have gotten two without it, but it doesn't hurt that they have a host pick to fall back on. They're Fine.

Carolane Soucisse/Shane Firus WS 18, SB 25 We've seen quite a bit of questioning whether these two will even get anything so to clear it up, they're guaranteed one and we will be genuinely surprised if they don't get two in the initial selection, and downright shocked if they don't have a second assignment by the time the GP series actually rolls around. They're Fine, probably.

Haley Sales/Nikolas Wamsteeker WS 53, SB 51 We know they were 4th at Nationals, but when it comes to GP invites other countries mostly care about your international record and they just don't have the numbers for anything beyond a host pick. And even domestically, let's be honest, Soucisse/Firus defeated themselves at Nationals. Host Pick Please!

Alicia Fabbri/Paul Ayer WS 61, SB 59 Their first season together was a bit rocky but came together at the end, and they've gelled very nicely. They're very young, so depending on their progress and what the federation thinks of them during monitoring, they could be up for the host pick. Host Pick Please!

Ellie Fisher/Simon-Pierre Malette-Paquette WS 59, SB 47 Somewhat better numbers than Fabbri/Ayer, but not so overwhelmingly that they have a major advantage going into monitoring. Neither team really has the numbers or reputation to swing a GP outside of Canada, so it's going to be down to what the federation officials think of each team's progress and potential. Host Pick Please!

Legally Guaranteed Spots: 30/60 Spiritually Guaranteed Spots: 40/60

Miscellaneous Teams Who Didn't Make it To Worlds But Are in the Running Anyway:

Olivia Smart/Adrian Diaz WS 13, SB 19 They're guaranteed one but should easily swing two, as they did this past season. They're Fine.

Darya Popova/Volodymyr Byelikov WS 26, SB 43 Sometimes the teams in the running for spots are who you expect, and sometimes math takes you by surprise. These two have been pulling double duty as both junior and seniors for a while, and it's lead to them sneakily racking up WS points with all their competitions while the mods weren't paying attention. Three of the teams ahead of them on the WS list won't even be competing on the GP, so they've got a great shot at at least one assignment. Surprisingly Better Than None.

Katharina Mueller/Tim Dieck WS 43, SB 40 Chances aren't amazing, but far from non-existent. Could pick something up down the line if they cross their fingers. Luck Be A Lady

Robynne Tweedale/Joseph Buckland WS 46, SB 37 They got two spots last season, a feat they are, uh, unlikely to replicate this season. They might get a later spot. Would You Light My Candle?

Adelina Galyavieva/Louis Thauron WS 55, SB 31 Probably get the host pick, might get a second assignment down the road if there's an opening. Better Than None

Legally Guaranteed Spots: 31/60 Spiritually Guaranteed Spots: 43/60

The Russian Stress Ulcer Situation:

After four straight years of two spots at worlds, Russia has finally earned back a third, and not a moment too soon because this? This is a mess y'all. Have fun predicting who will emerge victorious from this chaotic mass brawl, because we're not even bothering to think about actual results. Chances are decent Russia will leave a host spot open until after the Test Skates in September.

Tiffani Zagorski/Jonathan Guerreiro WS 12, SB 12 Guaranteed one and very likely to get two! Top 12 on both World Standing AND Season's Best will do that for you, regardless of what happens at Nationals. They're Fine

Sofia Evdokimova/Egor Bazin WS 28, SB 22 Guaranteed one, with a pretty decent chance of walking away with a second assignment. They’re Fine, probably.

Anastasia Skoptcova/Kirill Aleshin WS 37, SB 20 They're guaranteed one thanks to their scores from last season, but unfortunately the injury that hampered the start of their season took its toll on their WS points. 50/50

Sofia Shevchenko/Igor Eremenko WS 23, SB 27 Guaranteed one and they have a really good shot at a second assignment. While not a sure thing, they are the reigning JGPF champions and Junior World Bronze Medalists, and their SB is pretty high. Show Me A Second Spot

Betina Popova/Sergey Mozgov WS 29, SB 28 Nothing guaranteed but decent chance to get at least one on their own and/or host pick but we make no promises. A Fine, Fine Line

Anastasia Shpilevaya/Grigory Smirnov WS 57, SB 32 *extended sigh* Realistically would need a host pick for any spot. Slim chance based on last year though they do have a full season behind them this time(including Nationals!) if you still believe things like that matter. Forget candles and prayer circles, it's time for dark magic. All Of The Handwringing

Annabelle Morozov/Andrei Bagin WS N/A, SB 50 Despite having had a GP host pick and two challenger events, a greater amount of assignments for a first senior season than some other teams on this list, didn't place high enough at any of them to get any WS points at all. Should not be in the conversation for the host pick but, unfortunately, are probably in the conversation for the host pick. Somehow Relevant

Ksenia Konkina/Pavel Drozd WS 90, SB N/A In the reverse of the previous team, their one competition gave them WS points, but didn't count for the ISU SB list despite doing very well there. They'll be brawling for a potential host pick at the Test Skates, if the Fed even leaves one to fight over. Be Prepared So Many Teams, So Little Room

Elena Ilinykh/Dmitry Soloviev WS N/A, SB N/A AKA Schrodinger's Dance Team. Elena is both retired and not. She is interested in competing again and not. They're skating together and not. They're only interested in shows and not. They're planning for competition and not. They definitely are trying to drive the mods into an early grave so at least there are some certainties in life. They could get GP spots through the Split Couple Rule, but quite frankly, GP assignments come out in a month and they still haven't committed to skating together. Empty Chairs At Empty Tables
