FF3 Unused Content: Ingus and the Four Old Men
Tumblr media
Of the four Warriors of Light in the Final Fantasy III remake, Ingus is the most serious. While the final game heavily downplays it, there were a few moments in the unused script in which Ingus showed frustration with his allies’ shenanigans.
This story arc basically tackles it head-on, by drawing a comparison between the WoLs and... the Four Old Men?!
The sequence technically starts when the Warriors of Light leave the Amur inn, but this scene is hinted to be part of Ingus’ mood so I’ll mention it; As Luneth is initially waking up, he overhears a talk between Ingus and Aria’s caretaker, “Gramps”. They discuss the fact that time is moving again and how it was Gramps who carried the four out of the Cave of Tides. Ingus tries to apologize for Aria’s death, but Gramps acknowledges that Aria was acting for what she believed in and simply asks not to let her death be in vain. Luneth groggily cries out for Aria...
...Moving on.
The Warriors of Light wake up (Luneth waking up one hour later than the others) and discover that they were out for 3 days and 3 nights. During that time, Amur and the rest of the surface world returned to life. Arc notices how easy-going the town is and Ingus muses on how it is the world that Aria risked her life to save. Luneth feels that cheerful mood of the town is how the world is supposed to be. Ingus, however, says that Luneth is as light as ever, causing Luneth to take offense. Refia breaks it up at that point, but that doesn’t stop Luneth from threatening Ingus if he acts like that again.
(Yes, this is as close to the fabled fight scene as we ever get).
Now, this sequence seems to be missing a few scenes so one must rely on context clues and the in-game events to figure out what happens next; The Warriors of Light find their ship chained by best character Goldor, and they need the Levigrass shoes to reach his manor. The key difference seems to be that Ingus volunteers to go into the Amur Sewers alone, rather than the entire party go together.
This is because the first scene in the sewers has Ingus acknowledge that it’s been the first time in ages that he was away from the rest of the party, feeling refreshed as a result. As it turns out, Ingus is going it alone to make a statement: Despite them also being chosen by the crystal, Ingus thinks that Luneth, Arc and Refia are too naïve. To that end, Ingus intends to find the Levigrass Shoes quickly and without incident to prove his point.
Of course, Ingus finds and helps out the Four Old Men. The first of his scrapped lines seems to indicate that they vanish (In the final, they stick around for you to talk to). Ingus then muses that it must be tiring to be a normal person who doesn’t know what they’re doing...which makes him think of Luneth and the others.
The remaining scenes in the sewers play out about the same. Instead the capstone to this little arc happens on the World Map.
Ingus returns to his allies, mentioning that he met the four old men and he feels like he learned a lot. When Arc asks him to about it, Ingus sheepishly says he learned about the importance of friends and people’s feelings and admits that he was presumptuous. Luneth teases him by pointing that that line is uncool by Ingus’ standards, but Ingus simply tells him to say what he wants. The scene ends with Refia freaking out about another out-of-character aspect of Ingus: He’s smiling.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this scene, is that the focus on Ingus still remains in the final game: In addition to the “Inconceivable” line, there’s his reaction to seeing the four old men in trouble, him being the one to tell them to go home and Ingus being the one to approach Delilah about the Levigrass Shoes (and subsequently almost get blown up); It’s just now the rest of the party is there and Ingus’ annoyance at the Four Old Men’s antics no longer parallels his feelings towards his fellow Warriors of Light.
It’s yet another example of how this game’s scrapped script haunts it; How there are small elements that seem insignificant but actually tie into stuff that got axed.
