Eastern Lights’ Guide to Bachelor’s Programme English Studies Courses
Introduction to the Study of English - where newbies learn that no, being fairly good at English in middle school has not prepared them for any of this, and they’ve just been tricked into studying linguistics in a foreign language
Introduction to the Study of Literature - where you learn zip about literature but hey, there’s gonna be cool stories told by the cryptid professor who’d literally be rather doing anything else than teaching your stupid ass
Phonetics and Phonology - you will be the weird kid making weird noises with your mouth in the library the night before exams, most likely looking like this:
Tumblr media
Morphology - where your first assignment will be to write a think piece on “what is a word” and you’ll get negative marks if you submit a bold and well-argumented essay on why linguists should get rid of the concept of ‘words’ entirely. Not that I’d know, of course.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Morphosyntax - what you get when you mix morphology and BDSM
Syntax - rumour has it that the surest way to make out linguistics majors in a crowd is to whisper this word and listen for cries of terror
Lexicology and Lexicography - thanks to this course, you now know that this...
Tumblr media
... is in fact called a “zeugma”. At least one person will mutter “zeugma balls” under their breath
Introduction to Stylistics - no, the hot teacher is not single, and he will not let you forget it
British Literature - at this point, the student body is already divided into Linguists, Translators and Literature People and everyone but the Literature People is straight up not having a good time
American Literature - no, this hot teacher is not single either, and she’s way out of your league anyway
Translation Seminars 1 - 4 -  everyone but the Translators is straight up not having a good time
Translation Seminar 5 - the most desirable course in the department, made up of people who simp for the teacher, those who wanna hear him cratively translate curse words and that one person who just genuinely wants to learn to make subtitles
Pragmatics - everyone, Linguists included, is straight up not having a good time

i am in perhaps my most unhinged student era (woke up at 3:30 exactly on the verge of a panic attack from an incredibly violent nightmare, couldn't get back to sleep once i'd calmed down and decided to use this time to study for today's midterm)

loomings
oh my friends the first chapter is called loomings
ishmael keeps talking about fate and providence as a mechanism, as something technological
whereas the ancients framed destiny as woven threads, as artisan fabric
melville was born on the cusp of the industrial revolution
he was seeing the development of the modern fabric mill over the course of his life
ishmael is using one set of metaphors to frame his story (the technical) and his author is using another set to frame ishmael (the metaphysical)— i got this on some level the second time i read this novel in college AmLit and i’m pretty sure this is a thesis i absorbed during that class but for some reason this just knocked me on my ass

i think i regret cutting out a bit about Hawaiian poets in my reblog/addition to the Stop Being Reductive About Classics post last night because while I was trying to make a point about AmLit that included and noted the influences of South American and Central American authors, i didn't want to just throw Hawai'i into the mix considering the long history of denied self-determination. But that is also true of literally every cultural group that i did touch on within the reblog
at the time (11 pm) i'd been thinking in contexts of geographical groupings and the general likelihood of students encountering or being assigned readings based on those geographical factors, but I also worry that that makes things even worse, considering how beholden Hawai'i is to the US' influence and politics without even a token representational stake in literature classes

So alright then, gothic romance lesson plan number one downloaded and complete. Apparently, the key is to understand the template and tropes, then brainstorm what my own unique spin might be. In response to this on-line instruction, my highly caffeinated mind reaches way back into my long-ago AmLit memory files and fires off this wobbly knuckler right into the critical wheelhouse:
"Howzabout this?", my imaginary agent pitch opens, " 'A Farewell To Arms', with a zombified Catherine Barkley as lead heroine instead of static foil!"
Fuck me hard; I had better not quit my day job.

Now that the harry potter/scottish play quote post is all over my dash, I am given flashbacks to university.
For those who don't know I have a degree in English Language & Literature. And due to healthreasons, I had delay. And to keep myself entertained, I took extra lit classes, as theybweren't too taxing to take extra. Having run out of British Literature classes to take, I took some American Literature courses - which was a mistake because those professors were distinctly less sane.
But, at the first day of one of these AmLit classes, professor asked us to list our favourite lit as way of introduction. There are no men in this class, btw.
Most of these girlies list of titles that, at the end of the course, I refuse to believe they read on entirety or understood at all. Several say Harry Potter. This gets no side eye, it was a different time.
I name Discworld, because it *is* my favourite and I haven't read enough of Tolkien yet to legitimately claim that one. I get all the side eye, because they either don't know who Pratchett is, or because it is funny fantasy, and serious literature cannot be funny. Professor included. I find myself on her shitlist for the rest of the course.
(Using all essays for academic shade bc she constantly inserts her political opinion did not help)

also ive made the executive decision we cant study amlit in lit class anymore since our prof is british and my classmates r either 2brits 1swede 1dutch or all french. teacher said PAAblo. a as in As or At. she didnt know what tamales were. at all. i even spelled it out in case i was pronouncing it diff from her no she had no fucking clue. she keeps adding an R at the end of stella so its like okay so stanley hits stellar and NAUR. one character called another character a thing that was very clearly a period based nickname and a classmate asked what it meant and i heard her go i dunno must be an american thing U THINK I SAY SOURPUSS? it wasnt sourpuss but it was smth -puss that was very clearly off of sourpuss and nobody says it anymore and very clearly a thing from the time and shes like i dunno must be an american thing U R A LITERATURE PROF AND U CANT FIGURE THIS PUZZLE OUT ?!
