Starting Today, You are a Host! pt. 4
A hinge creaked as you pushed open the door to the music room on Monday morning. You spent the entire weekend, trying to think of a way to apologize to the hosts for what you said. You weren’t sorry for how you felt, but you definitely thought you could’ve handled it differently. You called Haruhi and apologized for taking the spotlight away from her, and convinced her that you would be incredibly proud if she was a host. Talking to her about everything really helped clear your mind, and you were grateful to her and Kyoya for helping you sort everything out. You chose to buy everyone a coffee and their favorite pastry from the cafe you all love, just to say thank you for understanding and making you feel better.
The music room was dark when you walked in. The curtains were pulled over the grand windows, and it was completely silent. You squinted in confusion. Am I the first one here? It wasn’t like Kyoya too be late, or to not be the first one to show up during club hours.
Your skirt swished as you made your way over to the light switch. You nearly dropped the drink carriers in your hand as the light flickered on, and the entire host club shouted a Surprise! as soon as they were visible. You looked to them and above them was a banner.
Sorry (Y/n), We Love You!
“You guys,” you whispered, eyes watering.
“Awe, (N/n)-chan! Don’t cry!” Honey’s eyes grew wide as he rushed over to you. Mori took the drinks from your grasp and set them down on the table.
“See boss? We told you she wouldn’t like it…” Hikaru stated, walking over to you.
“...we knew it would be way too over the top.” Kaoru followed Hikaru.
“Nooo! Don’t cry, mon amii! We just wanted to say we were sorry and that we appreciated everything you do for us!” Tamaki scrambled in front of you, as he ranted. “You just looked so sad and we don’t like it when you look like that, so we thought that this would be the best way-”
“Would you guys stop crowding her?” Haruhi said, joining the group with Kyoya in tow. “Can’t you see she’s smiling?” She rolled her eyes, idiots.
The host club paused and took a step back from you. You indeed had a bright, shining smile on your face, and giggles were escaping you.
You looked to every one of your friends with gushing appreciation. Your family wanted you to be happy.
You pulled them into a group hug, Kyoya stepping out of it, but leaving an arm in.
“Thank you so much, you guys. I love you too.”
The group hug tightened a little before disbanding, and heard the crunch of paper from behind you. You turn and see Honey with crumbs over his mouth, the pastries you had purchased nowhere to be seen. He looked over to the group and shrugged with a confused look on his face.
“What?”
:::
“So, tell me, Haruhi. Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do?”
“I'm curious. What kind of products do you use on your skin?”
“So why did you join the host club, Haruhi?”
Haruhi sat with the girls as the club was in full swing, once again trying to find any other way to pay off her debt. She needed something quick and effective to convince the girls to see her again. And she knew just the story.
“I see. Your mother was sick and passed away ten years ago. Who does the chores around the house?” One of her guests asked.
Haruhi shifted her focus to her guest, gracing them with a calming smile. “Oh, I do them myself. My mother taught me. She was an amazing cook.” Haruhi’s face fell slightly, but it was still fond. “And when she went to the hospital, she left me all kinds of great recipes. It was fun to create each dish, especially when they turned out well. And it made me happy to see my dad enjoy it. I've had a hard childhood, but dad and I have managed to make it through okay.”
The girls at her table blushed, their eyes sparkling with admiration.
“So...uh…” One student started.
“is it okay if tomorrow…”
“...we request to sit with you again?”
Haruhi tilted her head, forming a host smile of her own. “Yeah, I would really appreciate that, ladies!”
You and Kyoya were sitting at a table near Tamaki’s station. You two were discussing the party coming up, but now you both watched as Haruhi entertained her guests with ease.
“Wow, who knew Haruhi would be so good with the ladies?” You ask out loud, causing Tamaki to turn over on his couch, watching Haruhi as he peeks over the back. His eyebrow twitched as Haruhi led more guests to her table.
“Why is he so popular?” The prince said dramatically.
“He's a natural.” Kyoya replied, oblivious when Tamaki’s irritation increased even more.
Hikaru and Kaoru came around to the boss, a mischievous smile on their faces. “No training needed.” Tamaki made a whine noise, now fully annoyed.
“Have you forgotten about me?”
You sighed as Ayanokoji adopted a smug look when Tamaki immediately rushed to her side, favoring the words on your computer rather than the evil eye she shot you.
“Oh, no, sorry princess. I'm just a little bit concerned about our newest host.” Tamaki took another glance at Haruhi.
The redhead was obviously annoyed but kept her voice level. “Well, that's obvious, Tamaki. You sure have been keeping an eye on him.”
Tamaki turned to her again, and flourished his charm. Even the sigh he took was breathtaking.
“Of course, I have to. I'm training him to be a gentleman like me.” He reaches up and snaps her fingers. “Haruhi, come here for a minute.” He looked over at you, “You two (Y/n)! I don’t know if you’ve officially met my guest here.”
You and Kyoya met eyes before you stood up. You gave him a you’ve gotta be kidding me look. Walking over to Tamaki, you and Haruhi stood side by side.
“What's up?”
Tamaki gestured to the woman sitting next to him, “I'd like you to meet someone. This is my regular guest, princess Ayanokoji.”
You and Haruhi take on a host smile, taking a page out of the twins book to reply in sync, “Miss, it's a pleasure to meet you.”
Tamaki gasps, blushes and theatrically rushes over to the both of you, twirling you around. “That was so cute! That air of bashfulness was very good! Super good, amazingly good!”
Ayanokoji gasped and tried to get his attention, but to no avail. You were pulled out of Tamaki’s grip by Kyoya, who steadied you as you waited for your world to stop spinning. Haruhi wasn’t so lucky.
“Oh, you're so cute!” As Tamaki whirled the poor host, Haruhi reached out among the chaos.
“Mori-senpai! Help me!”
For being across the room at the time, Mori got there in super sonic speed, dragging Haruhi out of the blonde’s grip. He held her up, and you watched as he stared at her for a little too long. His eyes widened suddenly and another lightbulb appears in your mind.
You dramatically put your forehead on Kyoya’s shoulders, whimpering a simple finally.
Tamaki pouts and makes grabby hands at you and Haruhi, “Come on, little ones. Let daddy give you a big hug!”
“I thought we agreed you’re not my dad, Tamaki!”
“Yeah, I've already got a dad. I don't need another one!”
The host club was too busy to notice a certain ginger fox slip out the door, two bags in hand.
:::
Haruhi decided to walk with you after school, wanting to bounce some new hosting strategies off of you. Soon, a nice silence fell over you as the two of you walked. You found your mind going back to the boy you left in the clubroom. You told Kyoya that you couldn’t find your bag, and considering it held your calculus homework, you needed to find it as soon as possible. You needed a little extra practice than Kyoya, and a lot more concentration. He nodded and flicked his eyes to you, giving you a small smile before he glued his eyes to his screen.
His smile never used to give you butterflies before. What was that about?
You were about to ask Haruhi, grateful for the chance at girl talk, but she stopped in her tracks as she looked out the window. Her eyes widened and she got closer to the window. You followed her curiously, then cursed at the sight in front of you.
“Oh my god, what the hell?”
“Are you kidding me? But how did that happen?” Haruhi said as you both watched your bags float in the fountain below you. A familiar echo of heels found its way to your ears, as a figure passed by you.
Venom trickled from her voice, as she stopped without looking at the pair in front of her.
“Oh, it's you both again. I bet you love having Tamaki making you over and fawning over you.” She released a patronizing laugh. “It's useless, though. You both will always be second-class citizens.”
And with that, Ayanokoji walked off. You were about to follow her and give her a piece of your mind, but Haruhi held you back. “We can’t be bothered with her right now, our stuff is going to be ruined if we don’t fish them out.”
You nodded and texted your driver, telling them that you would be late for pick up, and to lay some towels on the seats.
:::
The water rippled with your movements as you both waded through the water. Your shoes and socks had been abandoned, and you had opted to take off your jacket, rolling up the sleeves of your white button down shirt.
You had managed to barely save your homework. You always kept all your work in a plastic organizer, and although water definitely got through, it was salvageable. Your laptop was a different problem, as it hasn’t turned on since you pulled it from the bottom of the fountain. You could fix it, considering you helped design it, but it only added onto your workload for the night. Haruhi was luckier, having kept her laptop in a case, and had found most of her things. Her hands felt around in the water, searching for her wallet.
“Hey, commoner!” You both stood up and looked behind you, recognizing that voice. Tamaki greeted you as well when you came into his view, and then looked down at the dripping folders and writing utensils. His brows joined together as he looked back to you two. “Why are your bags all wet?”
You looked to Haruhi, wondering what to say. She shook her head, “Uh, it's no big deal. We got it.”
You shook your head and called to Tamaki while looking back into the water. “We just can't find his food money. His wallet is still in here somewhere.”
There was a second of silence before a splash was heard. You turned to see Tamaki with his pant legs rolled up along with his sleeves. You smiled at him, but Haruhi protested. “Hey, you don't have to do that. You'll get wet.”
You scoffed, “Oh please, A little water never hurt anyone.”
Tamaki smiled at that, and with a teased back. “Besides, people are always telling me that I'm dripping with good looks.” You chuckled as you continued to another side of the pool, Tamaki diverting to the opposite end. He made a noise, and you watched him pull out a small leather square from the water. “This what you're looking for?” the blonde motioned to the brunette, but she just stared at him.
“What's the matter? You're staring off into space.” Tamaki said as he stepped out of the fountain, shaking the water off his calves. You waded to the side of her, giving her a teasing smirk.
“You're not falling for him, are you?”
Haruhi immediately shook her head and blushed, the look of surprise replaced by disgust, “Ew. No way.”
Tamaki reached out a hand to help you step out of the fountain, taking another disapproving glance at the soaked bags. “How did your bags end up in the pond anyway?”
You rolled your eyes, picking up your shoes, “It was-”
Haruhi interrupted you, “I guess we accidentally dropped them out the window at some point.” She shrugged and threw an apology look at you, clearly lying.
Tamaki shrugged and waited for you both to put your shoes back on before striding forward in front of you, off in his own little daydream.
“Why don’t you tell him the truth?” You whispered to the honor student, making sure Tamaki doesn’t hear you.
“She’s a client of his. All of his clients mean a lot to him, and I don’t wanna ruin that for him.”
You nodded. Even if you might not understand, Tamaki came first.
:::
You parted ways with the duo, relaying the message that your driver had sent you, telling you that he had parked to the side of the building to make room for other cars that were arriving. You held your laptop separate from your bag that was soaking your uniform, trying to get it to work. You were about to give up when you turned a corner and spotted a familiar head of black hair walking in front of you.
“Kyoya!”
Kyoya turned, a slight surprised look on his face. After processing that it was you who called out to him, he stopped walking, letting you catch up to where he was.
“(Y/n)? What are you still doing here?”
“I finally found my bag.” You gestured to the soaked fabric, and then to your computer, which had clearly seen better days.
The glasses character stared in muddled confusion at the state of your belongings, not as nearly surprised as he should be, considering your clumsiness, “And how did that happen?”
“Ayanokoji-san.” He looked at you at the sound of her name, realizing that she has been causing quite the drama for the past couple days. “Haruhi and I think she dropped our stuff in the pond.”
“I see. How is your laptop fairing?” He asked, taking it from your grip as he motioned you to walk with him.
“It’s dead, for sure. I’m hoping I can replace the battery, but if the RAM and the harddrive are shot as well, then I’m just gonna have to buy a new one. I do get a discount, but it’s still gonna be expensive.”
Kyoya nodded, saying goodbye to you as you got into your car, already thinking of a way to save your laptop and your money.
:::
“Oh really, that must have been terrible! I can't imagine what I'd do if my bag fell into the pond.” You heard Ayanokoji’s voice drip with fake sympathy as you entertained your guests.
“Why would she request Haruhi if she didn’t even like her?” You said under your breath, your attention shifting to the brunettes table, waiting for any attempt of assassination from the princess across from her. Never underestimate anyone.
“Uh, (Y/n)?” A boy across from you asked, regaining your attention. You blushed a little when you realized that you were distracted.
“Oh, I’m sorry, my sweet, I just have a lot on my mind. That’s all.”
“It’s just, you were staring a lot at Fujioka-san. Do you…like him, or something?” The boy blushed and looked down to his lap, saddened by the thought that you might be taken.
You gasped theatrically as you grabbed his hands with an earnest look in your eyes, “Oh no, honey, I only have eyes for you.”
His face went red and he chuckled, putting a hand behind his head sheepishly after taking it from your grasp. You excused yourself for a moment and walked to the pastry table right behind Haruhi, hoping to eavesdrop on their conversation.
“And you actually made Tamaki search that dirty old pond with you. How astonishing.” The princess kept talking. “You do realize he's a blue blood, not a commoner, right? The only reason he's paying attention to you is because he's trying to turn you into a gentleman.” You turn at her hurtful words, and she meets your eyes, this time showing her true colors. “Don't start thinking he cares about you just because he's doting on you.”
Something in you snapped. You gently set a blueberry pastry on the table in front of her, and leaned down, keeping your face pleasant as you put her in her place.
“You have absolutely no right to speak to anyone that way, let alone my friend. Just because you are possessive does not mean you can destroy our things and belittle us. Act like the lady you are, not a jealous snake.”
There was a crash as the table was flipped. You felt her grab your collar and pull you toward the floor harshly, her chair being kicked out from under her. You landed harshly on your knees, which were still injured from the week before, and your palms stung with the impact they made on the tile below you. Flabbergasted, you looked down at the woman who just pinned herself under you as she began calling for help. You stayed frozen in place.
“Somebody, help! She just attacked me! Someone, do something!”
An unwelcome chill washed over you as water was poured onto the both of you, completely shocking and soaking the girl below you.
“Why did you do that?” She asked as the twins helped you up with their unoccupied hand, a pitcher in the other. You looked at them, all three of you trying to process what the hell just happened.
“Do something, Tamaki. (Y/n) just assaulted me.”
Tamak let his bangs fall in front of his face, his mouth formed into an unfamiliar frown. “I'm disappointed in you. You threw their bags into the pond, didn't you?”
The twins looked at you for clarification, but you just nodded, telling them all they needed to know. Neither of them were pleased.
Ayanokoji gasped, confused as to why her prince wasn’t taking her side. “You don't know that! Do you have any proof that I did?”
Kyoya stepped next to you, laying a warm towel over your shoulders to stop your slight shivering. “If there’s one thing I know, (Y/n) is not that kind of woman.”
Tamaki shook his head in disappointment. “You know, you're a beautiful girl. But you aren't classy enough to be our guest, dear.”
The redhead widened her eyes, her plan backfiring right in front of her. An angry blush adorned her cheeks as she grabbed her purse and stormed off, “You idiot!”
The host club turned to you, questioning your well-being.
“I’m fine,” you say, wrapping the towel tighter around your shoulders, “just a little cold.”
Kyoya took a note in his little black book. “I will see to it that she reimburses you fully for your broken laptop.” He says, his glasses flashing.
“Kyoya-senpai?” Haruhi called to him, and Kyoya turned to see a large purple stain on her jacket and shirt, the crumbs of the pastry you had set on the table slipping off and falling to the floor.
“Oh dear.” Kyoya said, a hint of an idea in his eye “We will have to get both of you a new uniform.”
Tamaki walked up to Haruhi, putting an obvious finger to his chin in exaggerated thought, “Hmm, now how am I going to punish you? Because it is your fault after all.” He put on a show of thinking for a few more seconds before lighting up like a Christmas tree. “Your quota is now one thousand!”
“One thousand? But (Y/n) was the one too-”
“Ah, bup bup!” Tamaki interrupted her, shoving her into the changing room as Kyoya left to get you both a new uniform, “Come on. I've got high expectations for you, my little rookie.”
The Ootori son came back into the room, two small bags in hand. “(Y/n)’s was a little harder to track down, considering it was custom ordered.” He placed a small bag in your hands, giving you a small smile, “but we managed.” You slipped into a changing room as Kyoya gave the other bag to Haruhi, “This was the only spare uniform we had left. Sorry, but it's better than a wet one, right?”
Haruhi looked inside the bag and nodded. “Thanks a lot, you guys. I'm gonna change.”
After Haruhi closed the curtain, you poked your head out of the dressing room. You still had your bottoms on, but you had taken your shirt off and your bra was poorly hidden behind the crack you stuck your face through. You motioned Kyoya over, and he rolled his eyes as he walked towards you, keeping his eyes at a respectable level. He willed the blush he felt to not show up on his face.
“I didn’t see any spare male uniforms in Haruhi’s size in the costume closet last week. What did you give her?”
Kyoya turned his head, unable to face you anymore, and adjusted his glasses. He smirked nonetheless. “You’ll see.”
As you ducked back into the room, Kyoya was having a mini heart attack. What was that? Of course he didn’t see anything, but the notion that you weren’t decent made his mind go to places they should not be going to under any circumstances.
You were his friend. He respected you in ways he didn’t respect anyone else, but he had never thought about you like that until now.
The ravenet began to pinpoint that over the past week, you had left him feeling…lighter than usual. When you walked with him through the halls, or when you laughed with him over something Tamaki was doing. Whenever you worked yourself out of a hard problem or proved that your emotional intelligence will always be greater than his. He knew he could trust you, especially after that sunset trip to your gazebo, where he was more vulnerable than he had been with anyone else, save for his sister. Why did I feel like I could tell her those things?
Kyoya stood next to Mori in deep thought. What had changed?
You walked out in your dry uniform, and caught Kyoya’s gaze. His heart started to do that thing again, fizzing and stuttering in your presence. You were beautiful. Of course he had always known it, but he had never let himself admit it until now.
Taking your place next to Kyoya, you looked up at him and smiled. Oh god, don’t do that. He willed as his heart skipped another beat.
Luckily, Tamaki brought a welcome distraction as he walked back into the music room, having stepped out to grab a Tide ™ Stain Pen, and walking to Haruhi’s dressing room. You were about to stop him, but Kyoya put a hand on your shoulder.
“What?” You looked up at him.
“Don’t say anything, I want to see how this plays out.”
You deadpan. This felt familiar.
“Haruhi, here you go! I brought you something to help with the stain.” Tamaki said as he opened the curtain.
Haruhi stood there, her camisole hanging delicately on her shoulders. You willed Tamaki to say something, but he just let the curtain fall. Kyoya had a smug look on his face. The last lightbulb materialized above him, shining brightly.
“Haruhi?” Tamaki finally spoke.
The brunette hesitated from behind the curtain. “Yeah?”
“So, you're a girl?”
“Biologically speaking, yeah.” The curtain rippled open, and Haruhi stepped out wearing the official female uniform for Ouran Academy. Your eyes widened and you looked at Kyoya, who was clearly proud of himself.
Tamaki started to pull his hair out.
“Listen, senpai, I don't really care whether you guys recognize me as a boy or a girl. In my opinion, it's more important for a person to be recognized for who they are rather than for what sex they are.”
Your eyes turned sparkled at your best friend. She’s so cool!
Kyoya looked at you, feigning innocence, “Well, isn't this an interesting development.”
You rolled your eyes. “It sure is.”
Haruhi perked up and tried to console Tamaki, “Uh, you know, I have to say, senpai. I thought you were pretty cool earlier.” causing Tamaki to grow redder by the second
Recognizing his blush, the megane leaned down to you and whispered in your ear. “Now I could be wrong, but I think we may be witnessing the beginnings of love here.”
You met his eyes, and realized how true those words really were.
Haruhi walked up to the entire group, suddenly smiling, happy her secret was out. “Being a host and getting fussed over by a bunch of girls might not be that bad. I wonder how I could pull it off.”
Tamaki went white, and you laughed.
Haruhi put her fist in her hands. “I've got it! I'll just call everyone dude and bro now!”
She started to giggle, causing everyone in the host club to smile with her.

If Papa Louie ever did have people voice act over them, what customers do you think would have British accents?
we talked about it in DMs once, but me and Amii agreed Julep would have a fake British accent

A-T-4 004 Amii Stewart - Friends /
Mike Francis - Night Time Lady
I hum this song to myself a lot. We all know Amii Stewart from her disco cover of Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood. Stewart is an American but her recording career is European, first off in London where she records Knock On Wood and those early hits then to Italy for her 1983 self-titled album. The Amii Stewart album was a mix of British and Italian musicians but the follow up 1984's Try Love is a 100% Italian experience right down to the Fendi dress she wears on the sleeve. Amii Stewart was one of a few artists who were ahead of the curve as italo music would have a big impact to US pop and rock over the next four years
Mike Francis (Francesco Puccioni) does most of the arranging for Try Love and writes the title track, he also writes Friends which doesn't appear on the original Italian version of Try Love. Mike Francis releases his debut album Let's Not Talk About It in 1984 and has an excellent run until the end of the 1980s if you like his easy breezy sound
Amii Stewart - Friends the version on the UK 12. This to me is dream pop

Tasting Notes
Everytime I spin I learn something. The first thing I learned tonight was show up earlier, and make sure the gear is in working order. Second thing I learned was that I need to learn about the board. Still, I made fewer technical errors than ever before, and some of the segues were quite good. But, the baseline is: did you do damage to the vibe?
The opening was fraught with technical miscues, bad volume control, but thanks to Julie, we got things ironed out, and the set proceeded apace. And, it was busy. The barstaff were running hard all night, and the Treasure Valley Roller Derby showed up post match in full force. Those people know how to get down.
Stayed close to the familiar in the early going, just trying to get my feet underneath me. Horror Grace and Nicky Mustard were there early, and left early to go eat. I didn't play anything earlier than 1974, and Mustard only listens to things made before 1967. So they made a wise move. They missed the Booker T record I played late.
Dj Dusty C and DJ Brose came by and said hi, and Miss Allanna Love took my drink orders. Which kind of took my breath away. Minerva occupied a place on the bar for a couple of hours as well, so there was a high celebrity count in the house.
I had intended to downshift between 1 and 2, and I kind of did, but Cyberjewel asked me to keep the tempo up, since the bar staff was flagging and tired after a brisk and lively night. As you know, I don't take requests. I'm limited in the number of records I can bring to the booth, and I kind of have a good idea what to do, but I really don't hate hearing what people want to hear. It gives me ideas, and helps me read the crowd. And, it may put in motion record aquisition strategies for subsequent sets.
In any case, I did use the last hour to experiment a little bit, play less familiar tracks, and new things that I have, just to see how they play on the system. That is a continual process. Some records, while enjoyable to listen to in other settings don't jump off the turntables, and cut through the noise. And, some things work better at other times in the set, depending on what you play before or after. For instance, the Nappy Roots track I played didn't work in the place I put it. And I didn't eq it right either. I have played it before, and it has worked. Last night it didn't. Oh well.
I got some new (to me) compilations, The Dollar Bill, Y'all collection of the first decade of rap records from Beat Goes Public, and the Life Between Islands compilation on Soul Jazz. Both are amazing. I played a couple tracks apiece from them, and will hit more as I get into it. I also got the Disco Reggae Rockers compilation in the mix. IGA turned me on to that, and I played Flight To Jamaica in his honor, even though he is thousands of miles away.
That Anadol record was a real reach for me. And it worked where I placed it. Plague Vendor is a weird SO CAL band that play short songs, the singer yelps, and they kick it. I like it, people are mystified. The new EBTG is killer. I played one of the two uptempo-ish tracks to good effect. And that Marshall Watson record is one of my favorites this year!
Next set is August 19th. Hope to have some fresh 7" records in the box. Maybe we see you there.

As far as I know people talk more or only about Amii Ozaki's 1980s era but I honestly think more people should pay attention to her 1970s era, it's one of the best things I listened to. Not only because of its quality but because with the exception of a few songs it can make you relax without making you feel sleepy.
