so i'm still thinking about a rival most vial and i can't stop imagining eli joining an adventurer party and as the new guy, he naturally becomes the errand boy
so they send him to the griffin's claw to restock on the potions they're going to need for their next job, but he comes back with way too much leftover money and everyone's like "hey eli, what the fuck did you do. please tell me you didn't steal these? come on we can't afford to get on mr beake's bad side, he owns the only decent potion shop in the entire scar"
but eli's like "no guys it's okay, i'm actually dating the owner, so i get the family discount"
no one believes him, because ambrose beake doesn't like ANYBODY, there's no way their sunshine himbo managed to woo him
so eli has no choice but to introduce the party to ambrose
and ambrose, who promised dawn he would try and be more sociable, makes small talk with the party, and at one point he jokes that, "yeah, i'll give your party discounts on all the potions you buy from me from now on, but in return you have to make sure nothing happens to my boyfriend's pretty face"
the party all get a kick out of that, and it ends up becoming a running joke for them
one time eli gets a black eye on a job and their archer starts wailing, "nooooo!! that's our money maker! quick, we gotta heal him! i can't go back to paying full price for healing potions. do you have any idea how many of those we go through per job?"

Hey, headmage!! Grim and I received an invitation to visit Royal Sword Academy! A very kind man said that we were peculiar students, that we would surely be interested in "expanding our options"... I don't know what he meant by that but well... Can we go?! After all it's just a visit.
Enter; An Unkindness of Ravens.
Tumblr media
“What’s that?” A twinge of annoyance colored Crowley’s otherwise flighty voice. “An invitation--and from Royal Sword Academy, you say?”
The slant to his golden gaze, the pursing of his lips--he was visibly irked.
“Curse that Ambrose…!” Crowley muttered under his breath. “For him to reach out and attempt to pilfer perfectly good students from right under my nose!! Is he not already satisfied with gloating and rubbing his victories in our faces year after year?"
He quietly seethed at the suggestion--but any idea, turned and examined from multiple angles, had patches of promise. His eyes gleamed, beak scrounging around for opportunity.
"Oh, but... It would be a waste to not seize this chance to gain the upper hand in future competitions. What better way to learn of the winning techniques and strategies than by infiltrating the base of one's rivals? Yes, now could be the perfect time to strike!!"
"Er, headmaster? My question?" you gently reminded him. "Can Grim and I go?"
"Go?!" Crowley abruptly rose from his desk, slamming both hands upon it. He caught his panic and reeled it back, clearing his throat and cooing sweetly. "My dear, dear Prefect! You know me to be a kind and understanding man. Of course you may consider your request to visit RSA granted--on one condition!"
"And what's that?"
"Why, that is for me to accompany you on the trip!" He rested a hand on your shoulder. "Royal Sword Academy is at the other end of Sage's Island. It won't do to allow a student taken in under my wing to travel that far without some form of adult supervision! What's more, Ambrose is my equal in status. Surely he would take no issues with a fellow headmaster visiting on work-related business!"
You arched a brow. "Are you really chaperoning me for work-related business though?"
"I most certainly am!! Our mission is a vital one," Crowley insisted, raising his staff into the air--as if leading an army into battle. "You and I, Prefect!! We shall act as spies for our Night Raven College... and uncover the secrets to Royal Sword Academy's teamwork and camaraderie so that we may replicate their success!"

Plague-Tober 2023 #3 - Honey
The beekeeper was somewhat of an enigma.
They'd been settled in Darkwood for several years, setting up their apiaries in the rolling fields of the northwestern corner of town, where many of the farmers tended to their crops and lived. A welcomed neighbor.
They were tall and thin, always covered by their garb, like Doctor, though they rarely revealed their face. Once, they confided in Doctor, they felt comforted that there was someone else like them, who always wore the marker of their chosen path. They explained that they liked the enclosed nature of their garb; It was like a soothing weight on their shoulders, the woven basket-like mask a shield from the glare of the sun and prying eyes. It reminded them of home, of the broadleaf shrubs that protected them from the withering heat without completely denying them the satisfaction of the view.
To say the Doctor and the beekeeper were friends was easy. Few had seen their face, and even fewer had been invited to their home, unlike Doctor. It was not that the beekeeper -- named Ambrose -- was inhospitable, it was more of the fact that Ambrose liked to keep to themself.
"Lovely rain we had yesterday." Doctor mumbled, settling down into the chair Ambrose had invited them to sit at. The beekeeper bustled around their kitchen, preparing tea for the two to share. When they placed the tea and sweets onto the table-- what appeared to be honeyed shortbread decorated with dried rose petals and a pinkish tea made with a blend of flowers -- Doctor held up their hand as if to deny them.
"You never share tea with me." Ambrose admonished, clearly hurt but in a playful way. Their voice was mellow and rich, the vowels and consenants precise. "You must, at the very least, take some to eat later."
"Of course, my friend. Sorry, I always have lunch just before visiting and my appetite is quite small."
"Like a bird." They chuckled, sitting across the way from Doctor. Their hand reached out to swat gently at the 'beak' of Doctor's mask. "I swear, it seems as if you could simply look at food and become full."
"It appears that way, doesn't it?" Doctor replied, voice light and joyous.
Ambrose poured fragrant tea from their porcelain pot decorated with hand-painted flowers. A betrayal of their riches, but the only splurge they had allowed themself in their otherwise humble abode. "Anyways, I know this is a business call and not a personal one, so what can I do for you?"
"A simple transaction. I feel autumn's chill slowly arriving, and I must resupply. Has your harvest been plentiful?"
"It has. And…Summer wanes, yes. I too can feel it in the wind. Many of my flowers have gone dormant." The beekeeper glanced out the window momentarily, their masked face turning away. "…I always feel so sad to see one less bloom in my garden. They are like children to me, and I miss them when they sleep."
"Seasons come and go, my dear. It will be summer again before you know it."
The beekeeper leaned back in their chair, drawing their full attention back to Doctor. "I know you love the autumn, preparing your winter crop, but I grow restless. I feel the ache of losing hours of the sun." They drew a delicate gloved finger over the rim of their tea cup, contemplating it. The mask was then removed with little fanfare, set aside without much thought.
Revealed to Doctor was a plant-kin lesser fae, 'skin' a greenish, golden hue. Their laughing eyes iridescent like a prism. They had a nubian nose, wide and somewhat flat, and thick beautiful lips that looked much like rose petals. They brought the steaming tea cup to their aformentioned lips absently, then set it down onto its saucer.
"How much honey do you need?" Ambrose pulled down the white hood of their garb and shook free their 'hair,' a mass of flowers in the style of goldenrod blooms. Doctor knew it was not polite to stare, but they were pleasantly captivated by their passive beauty.
"Oh, a case of jars would be fine. And a few bundles of the glass sticks would be lovely. My customers love when I include them for their tea. Speaking of, do you have any need of seeds? I have plenty to spare. As a gift, between friends -- not my attempt at receiving a discount."
Ambrose laughed at that, but recovered quickly. "I have plenty as well, but thank you for asking." The plantkin rose up from their chair, then. "I'll go pack the case and grab the bundles for you, and we can settle the cost afterwards when I fetch my ledger. Feel free to entertain yourself."
"At your pleasure, friend."

@ashen-crest i thought that we were supposed to be posting these on the 31st, oops!
@ everyone else, have you guys seen A Rival Most Vial? If not, check it out here!
And a little poem diddy too!
Two potion shops One rivalry Ambrose Beake doesn't break but he does find a give and in that give in the Crack in the Chasm in the Dark there's light. A light beneath the cauldron burning bright, bright, bright. Bubbling, toiling, troubling with another face peeking through the steam. And maybe it's not just a potion brewing in the pot but something deeper richer more meaningful. It has a name: romance. And another: Eli.

@pyramultimuse While in his raven form Diaval sometimes explored when his master didn't need him, though never ventured too far. He was far more intelligent than a normal raven, but still had the impulsion to collect objects. Being a familiar he was drawn to magical items, whether they were found or taken was a mystery.
Diaval flew over and perched on his master's shoulder and in his beak he held a wand made of dark oak wood, it's handle wrapped and braided with silver unicorn hair and at the very tip where the magic would be cast out was a perfectly cut black diamond.
Tumblr media
Ambrose let his precious raven go whenever he felt like just being out and about. The mage knew how to keep himself busy.
By the time he got back, Ambrose had his nose in a book, which was nothing new. What was new was the book he was attached to. “My precious Dia…” He noticed that his familiar was a little heavier than some time earlier that day. He looked over his shoulder at his raven. “What did you bring us, my lovely?”
Ambrose reached out and took it from Diaval. “Where did you find this?” Dark eyes scanned over the object, feeling it. “There is a lot of magical power in this wand… Black diamond, a perfect one… Unicorn hair…” He could feel it vibrate in his fingers.

"A Rival Most Vial" by R.K. Ashwick
Tumblr media
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (3.5/5) (🌶️ Spice level: 0)
“Two potion shops, one heated rivalry…until hate bubbles over into something else.
Any adventurer worth their sword knows about Ambrose Beake. The proud, quiet half-elf sells the best, and only, potions in the city—until a handsome new shopkeeper named Eli opens another potion shop across the street, throwing Ambrose’s peace and ledgers far off balance.
Within weeks, they’re locked in a war of price tags and products—Ambrose’s expertise against Eli’s effortless charm. Toil leads to trouble, the safety gloves come off, and right as their rivalry reaches a boiling point…
The mayor commissions them to brew a potion together.
The task is as complex as it is lucrative, pushing both men to the limits of their abilities and patience. Yet as the fires burn and cauldrons bubble…they find a different sort of chemistry brewing.”
When you grow up with your only real chance for any sort of lgbt representation being fanfiction, you develop a fondness for its tropes and cliches. And “A Rival Most Vial” is like a full length novel of that nostalgia. I don’t know very much about R.K. Ashwick, but I don’t think it would surprise me too much if the trenches of fanfiction.net or AO3 were where she made her writing debut. The book is a love letter to everything safe and familiar, and even beloved about fanfiction. It’s a cute and very simple romantic fantasy read, and the world Ashwick sets it in feels very reminiscent of DND adventures- while I was reading it I actually couldn’t help but mentally compare the characters and world to “The Adventure Zone” (a dnd podcast hosted by the McElroy brothers). It’s cozy, the characters are easy to follow and the world is teeming with all sorts of people and creatures.
I would honestly recommend it as a young adult or even teen fiction read. There’s things that adults can enjoy within the story, but overall it feels like a book meant to be enjoyed by younger audiences.
The biggest criticism I actually have for the book relates back to the comparison to fanfiction. Fanfiction is often shorter, a few thousand words with pre-established characters and often a simple plot or premise. “A Rival Most Vial” is about 340 pages depending on how/where you read it, but if you cleaned it up it could likely be about 200 pages of things that actually contribute something to the plot/characters, if not less. The writing feels unpolished and the plot feels jumbled and scattered, which short prose fiction often disguises better. When expanded into long form writing, those weaknesses are exposed
The book itself is rife with minor conflicts, snippets, and interactions that take up a lot of space, but add nothing to the plot. Actually, they tend to distract from it pretty heavily, constantly pulling attention from the problem at hand to explore a different conflict, usually between Ambrose, one of the co-protagonists, and one of the supporting cast. Unfortunately, few of these ‘side quests’ are actually finished in a satisfying way- most feel like empty filler that exist just to tick a trope off the list. At best, they feel confusing and distracting, and at worst they are actively disappointing side plots. Most could be completely erased and absolutely nothing about the story would change- and if 5/10/20 pages at a time can be deleted from your book with no consequence, then they either need to be rewritten or scrapped. It feels cluttered- and the primary plot is supposed to be a time sensitive quest that the characters are supposed to be anxious and flustered about, but somehow there’s always time for brunch. It diminishes any sense of urgency the reader is supposed to feel when even the characters feel distracted. In the end, it makes half the story forgettable.
The story also had a weird lack of focus on its own primary plot point, not just in how many sidequests happened, but in that very little of the actual problem was explained or solved. It felt a little like an afterthought, like they realized last minute that that was supposed to be the actual plot and they’d need to finish that to finish out the book. And even then, it was finished with something like, a quarter of the book to go.
The lack of polish extends beyond an inconsistent plot line, the character interactions are actually the weakest point of this book despite the vast potential it gives itself. Interactions between the characters tend to read as overly scripted- it’s as if they’re reciting something instead of talking, which leads to conversations feeling stilted. This is especially difficult during emotionally charged conversations, of which there are supposed to be dozens, being flat and ineffective. You don’t get any true sensation for how the characters feel about each other, and any idea of their relationship is told instead of shown… and even that isn’t spelled out until the end of the book. It’s supposed to be a world shattering realization at the end, but instead it’s just… words on a page. Which is a shame, the relationships that Ashwick was trying to write had amazing potential for an heart-wrenching story about found family and love, but it only reached about half of that potential.
Conflicts in this story were also very weak because of both the inconsistent plot and stilted character interactions. Nothing felt like it had high stakes as everything was solved by brushing it off and moving on.
A minor spoiler warning
The best example of this actually the most memorable moment from the book. The conflict arises with two characters getting into a heated argument, that winds up with one quite literally abandoning the other (who has a major fear of abandonment) in a particularly deadly situation- and the situation is solved with the abandoned character seeking forgiveness (for some reason), giving the abandoner a gift, and then they hug.
The conflict had so much potential for character exploration and growth, for some truly gritty writing and a redemption arc. But in the end it’s brushed off like it was nothing, and neither character grew or actually learned anything. They just… go back to being friends.
Even the enemies to lovers aspect is handled like this. They simply hate each other until they don’t, and then despite a literal fist-fight they are in a codependent relationship with no build up. There’s not really any reason they should like each other.
But, with all that said, the story was an enjoyable read and very cute! Ambrose and Eli have very sweet interactions with each other once they set their differences aside. Seeing Ambrose open up is rewarding, especially when the story is addressing its underlying message of found family. The older side characters were actually some of my favourites, as they try to help two young idiots figure out their shenanigans. I wanted to learn more about the characters as I read- because where Ashwick fell short in writing their interactions, she did an amazing job at writing the characters themselves.
A particular favourite for me was Eli, who put into words that looming feeling of existential dread that comes with aging into an adult and realizing that you have to pick something to do for the rest of your life. He reads very ADHD-coded to Ambrose’s autism-coded. He’s tried half a dozen ventures and been moderately successful at all of them, but it’s his restlessness that ends up spoiling it for him and he has to move on. That’s a very recognizable feeling, I’ve left jobs because while I started off enjoying the novelty, the moment the newness wore off it became a chore that I’d be dragging myself through. To see Eli facing down that conflict, I think would make a lot of people feel seen. Especially since it isn’t given in a negative light, it isn’t his laziness or lack of motivation- it’s just how he is. A lovely contrast to Ambrose, who is content in his routine and has a deep distaste for change.
So, overall this book was still good! I did really enjoy reading it in all its cheesy glory. I definitely think it has a place with younger audiences, especially with its bounty of representation that many teens lack in their own stories. I’m excited to see more come out of Sidequest Row, and I hope to see the writing improve in subsequent books!
Cheers, friends!

Welcome to Potion Con by R.K. Ashwick
Tumblr media
Bubbling cauldron? Love it. Bubbly people? Not so much. Young apprentice Ambrose Beake knows everything about potions...except for how to talk to other potioneers. So, when the annual potion convention rolls into town, he’s both thrilled and riddled with anxiety. Will the chatty crowds be too much for him? Or will he find his people? In this light-hearted Dungeons & Dragons meets Comic-Con short story, you'll meet the main character of A Rival Most Vial, eight years before his rival sets up shop across the street.
Review
I knew, the moment I was reading A Rival Most Vial, that I will love whatever R.K. Ashwick writes about those characters. And so far it has been real, because you don’t have the slightest idea of how much time I passed reading on Tumblr a, what it was, a 60k words AU / Crossover with some pirates? And a story with criminals? And all the short stories she had lingering around, of them being college students and whatnot. And it was delightful, I was in paradise. Except for the fact that it was an obsessive reading and I left aside everything I should have been doing… heheh
This was pretty short in comparison, but it was as good. My favorite character wasn’t around (?), but there was the same exact reason why I fell in love with the gang, Sherry, Banneker and Grim, though Grim weren’t around. I mean, I knew a scene with something like that will be there and was waiting for it, all quiet and calm and giggly because I knew it was coming. And was so good. I loved it and treasure it dearly because it’s so good, it’s so great that I’m able to feel that love as if it were written for me.
Our potioneer is little here, in a moment from the past (that at least for me feels like a spoiler from the future), but I didn’t think- well, I knew he was kind of like that, but really didn’t expect him to be able to do what he did in a situation like that. Though all the necessary requirements for him to just do it were met, so wasn’t that much of a surprise. More like an expected delight.
Ah, oh. I also felt so delighted when an unexpected moment arrived, where I saw why my favorite character is so special. That exact situation play again in the future as to say to you “look why it didn’t work then” and, well, I’m happy about it.
How something so short can bring me so much joy, how? I should have read it sooner, but it was there just when I needed it. And it’s free, what are you waiting to give it a shot?
Phrases that I liked so much that I marked them while reading
«“Did Pearce give you money for lunch?” she asked Ambrose. It was odd seeing her and Banneker without their usual shop attire. No gloves, no aprons, no goggles or welding masks. Simply tunics and vests, like what Ambrose wore. “Ah, no, he didn’t,” he said, looking through his coin purse. “But I should have enough.” Banneker rolled his eyes. “I got this one.” Before Ambrose could protest, the artificer dropped a handful of coins into his purse. Ambrose stiffened and pawed through them, trying to count the new coins. If Master Pearce noticed the extra money… “I’ll give you half-off on your next vial,” he said quickly. “That should settle the debt—“ “It’s not a debt, it’s a gift,” Sherry sighed. “Now, if you get lost, we’ll be in Vendor’s Alley for most of the day. You need anything, we’ll be right there.” She squeezed his shoulder.» — Check-In.
«The peace of the workroom allowed Ambrose to better appreciate Sandon’s eyes and the way his hair fell across them. When presented like this, his offer was almost tempting. But even Sandon’s charming half-smile couldn’t convince him to go to a crowded party at a tavern. Not after the day he had.» — Vendor’s Alley.

Don't question the process Ambrose just look pretty
After @ashen-crest made this post about RPS AUs, I desperately wanted to draw everyone in ballgowns. The sketch sat in my notebook for months and now it is fully realized.
In my head this is an AU of the Icefall AU where Ambrose has to be brought onto the team to take down a different sort of kingpin and also Eli has a huge crush on him even though he's a criminal, and Dawn Knows and is Fully Enabling this behavior
(We're gonna call this a slightly late Christmas gift instead of a very late/early birthday gift)

Demon Slayer Renaming Continued
Thanks again to @cringeyvanillamilk for assisting me with this renaming project! I'd also like to give a shout out to @cryo-visionary, @spindaonateaspoon, and @loafingdragon for letting me bounce my thoughts off them while I was coming up with the last few names! These guys are good friends and wonderful creators! Please, check out their blogs!
Now it’s time to reveal the new names for the other Demon Slayer character for their migration into the world of Black Clover. Like with the Pillars, it was hard breaking down these Japanese names and finding names with similar meanings/feelings to them.
Thankfully, some of these characters are related to character already given their surnames so that takes care of explaining a few of them. Still, there was quite a bit of work to do.
As always, names written in Japanese are written with the surname first. Names written in English have the given name first.
Tanjirou Kamado (竈門 炭治郎): Tanjirou’s given name contains three kanji. The first means “coal,” “charcoal,” or “cinder.” Second is the character for “govern/regulate” or “cure/heal.” The final kanji means “son,” as we’ve seen in several other characters’ names. His surname is written with the kanji for “hearth” and “gate.” As a young mage a dual affinity for Water and Sun Magic, he would be... Conleth Coaler: The name Conleth is Irish in origin, meaning “chaste fire.” I like the alliteration of the name, it works with the “hearth” character in his surname, and it’s a reference to the Breath of the Sun being called the Dance of the Fire God. As for the family name, way back when, a lot of surnames came from people being named after their jobs. Since the Kamado family were charcoal sellers and Tanjirou’s name includes the kanji for “coal,” I decided to make his surname Coaler.
Nezuko Kamado (竈門 禰豆子): Although some people might think that the “nezu” part of Nezuko’s name is meant to mean “mouse,” the kanji written actually mean “sacred” and “bean.” The final kanji in her name is the one for “child.” Nezuko’s name as an elf host with dual Fire and Light Magic user would be... Lucasta Coaler: The name Lucasta comes from a poem of the same name by Richard Lovelace to the woman he loved. It’s a nickname for her coming from the Latin phrase lux casta which literally translates into “pure light.” It is fitting as Nezuko’s blood demon art is fire, creating light, and the idea of purity relating to the “sacred” kanji in her name.
Zenitsu Agatsuma (我妻 善逸): Zenitsu’s given name is written with the kanji 善 that means “virtue/goodness” and 逸 which means “flee/hide/lost/outstanding” (one of these things is not like the others). As for his surname, it roughly translates into “my wife” as the kanji (in order) mean “I/me” and “wife.” A lot of this is very straight forward and easy to work with. So, the name he has as a Lightning Magic user in the Amber Songbird squad is... Egil McBride: The name Egil seems to come from Old Norse, derived from the term “agi” which means “awe” or “terror.” It’s fitting as “awe” has positive connotations like the first kanji in his name while “terror” has negative connotations like the second kanji. As for that surname, you all are going to have to trust me when I say that I literally had a classmate with this family name. It’s legitimate. There is no way I’m not giving the name to Zenitsu.
Inosuke Hashibira (嘴平 伊之助): To start, the first syllables of Inosuke’s name are the same as the beginning of the Japanese word for boar (inoshishi). As for the meaning of the kanji, they are as follows: “this,” a possessive particle (think of it like an ‘s), and “assistance.” Hashibira is written with characters that mean “beak” and “peace/flat.” The name I came up with for Inosuke as a Beast Magic user wandering Clover Kingdom is... Boris Fritz: The first syllable of the given name sounds like “boar” just like how “Ino” is homophonous with the beginning of the Japanese word for “boar.” It’s also a shortened version of the Slavic name Borislav, containing “borti” meaning “battle” and “slava” meaning “glory” (how very appropriate for him). As for his surname, it comes from the Germanic element of "frid," meaning "peace."
Genya Shinazugawa (不死川 玄弥): The first kanji in Genya’s name means “mysteriousness” or “occultness,” which makes sense considering his, uh, unorthodox abilities in canon. He shares the second character in his name with Sanemi, which means “increasing” or “universally.” As before with Sanemi, the name Shinazugawa means “immortal river.” As the younger brother of the Jade Raptor’s captain, Genya’s name becomes... Runard Ambrose: This name comes from combining the Old Norse word for “secret” (rún) and the Germanic word for “brave, hardy.” The first half relates to the first kanji in Genya’s name while the second is fitting of his character. The name also makes an interesting parallel to his brother’s name (Adivar) since it means “truth.” It’s ironic since Genya is a more open person while Sanemi is the one to bury his feelings deep within himself.
Kanao Tsuyuri (栗花落 カナヲ): The trouble with Kanao’s name is that it isn’t written with any kanji characters, so there’s no easily defined meaning to it. Fortunately, like, Shinobu’s name, there are words that sound similar from which her name could come from. The words I found were the volitional conjugations of the following words: “to rival” (敵おう), “to match” (適おう), or “to be fulfilled” (叶おう) in regards to dreams or wishes. Her surname does have kanji which are “chestnut,” “flower,” and “to fall or drop” respectively. As a mage in the Wisteria Butterfly squad, her name would be... Filomina Castaniva: The name combines φιλος (philos) meaning “friend” or “beloved” and μενος (menos) which means anything from “wish” to “courage” to “strength.” The “wish” meaning relates to the possible meaning of Kanao’s name and the name overall is a reference to how befriending and falling for Tanjirou opened Kanao to her own desires and a greater strength. The surname is derived from the scientific name for the Spanish chestnut, Castanea sativa. I chose this specific species since it is the species of chestnut that grows in Europe.
Kanae Kochou (胡蝶 カナエ): Same as Kanao, Kanae’s name is written without kanji but we can find words with similar sounds and go off that. Her name is homophonous with the word for “a three-legged kettle.” Not the coolest thing to be named after but her name could also come from the same words as Kanao, but as the stems of the potential conjugations - 敵える, 適える, or 叶える. Kanae definitely fits with the last definition best since she had a dream to see humans and demons co-exist peacefully, even though she never got to see it through herself. With all this in mind, the name I gave her as the retired Wisteria Butterfly captain is... Desirae Danain: One spelling of the name Désirée which is derived from the French word for “to desire,” like a want. It think it's a good complement to the “kanau” meaning “to be fulfilled.” For that and how it connects to Kanae’s dream, I went with this name. I think in the world of Black Clover, she would instead have a dream of seeing the four human kingdoms and other races learn to live in harmony. She shares her surname with Shinobu, or should I say Patience.
Sabito (錆兎): Since we don’t know Sabito’s family name, there’s not much to work with. What we do have are the kanji 錆 which means “rust” or “patina” (which is that layer of green that forms on bronze, brass, or copper due to oxidation). The second character, 兎, simply means “rabbit.” From these kanji, I give Sabito the following name as the vice captain of the Cobalt Ocean... Payton Harrison: I’m basing this given name both on the fact that it vaguely sounds similar to “patina” but also on its meaning. While the sources aren’t clear, I’ve found that the name Payton supposedly means “fighting man’s estate” which is fitting of Sabito’s character. The surname simply means “son of Harry” which doesn’t mean much but it contains the sound “hare,” an animal related to rabbits.
Tamayo (珠世): Tamayo also only has her given name and two kanji to work with. The first character in her name can be translated as “pearl,” “gem,” or “jewel.” The second kanji is commonly understood and translated at “world.” As a researcher of forbidden magic and curses, and someone working against the powers of devils, I give her the name... Margareta Verelden: The given name is used in several languages such as Romanian, German, and Croatian that comes from the Greek μαργαρίτης (margarites), meaning “pearl.” Her surname is a combination of "verden" and "wereld," the Danish and Dutch words for "world," with the Dutch word being in its plural form.
Yoriichi Tsugikuni (継国 縁壱): Yoriichi’s given name is written with the characters that mean “fate,” “relationship,” or “connection” and then “one” (it should be noted that this “one” isn’t commonly used in day-to-day life and is mostly seen in legal documents). The first character in his surname means “inherit” or “succeed” (like a line of succession, not victory) and the second means “country.” Dustyn: His given name is an alternative spelling of the name Dustin which sounds like the words “destiny” or “destined” in connection to the first kanji of Yoriichi’s name. As for the meaning, that would be “brave/valiant warrior,” coming from Old German and Old English roots. Since in canon we don't see any elves with family names, I've opted to keep to that trend.
Michikatsu Tsugikuni (継国 厳勝): Michikatsu’s given name is written using characters that mean “strict” or “stern” and “victory” respectively. The first kanji works in relation to his personality, especially during his time as a demon. The second one is probably related to the fact that he was the chosen heir of their family and wanted to be the greatest samurai. Anyways, his name as the leader of the elf resurrection cult is... Viktr: The name comes from me corrupting the spelling of Victor, which is literally just one letter shy of the word “victory” and generally means “winner” or “conquerer.” Same as with Yoriichi, Michikatsu doesn't get a family name as an elf.
Senjurou Rengoku (煉獄 千寿郎): There’s not much to explain here as most of the kanji that appear in Senjurou’s name are also in Kyoujurou’s name. The only unique kanji is the character 千 which means “thousand. So, as the younger brother of Captain Eric Enfernus, he would be named... Ezeren Enfernus: The “ezer” part of his name comes from the Hungarian word for “one thousand.” Also, there’s a mountain named Mount Ezeren in Bulgaria.
