I came across this recently - an interview with the wonderful Aadila Dosani (Amanda Bobbsey) on the Tumblr @entertainment blog from 2021. In it she states that “every member of the Drew Crew can sing,” that “they have the voice of angels,” and they can “belt out show tunes like Idina Menzel’s spirit animals!” She then calls for a “Musical Episode, anyone?!”
Tumblr media
Alas, I don’t believe we’ll get a musical episode in the final season (although they sort of look like they’re about to break into song in the photo above).
I humbly submit the next best thing, my musical theater AU fic, No One Mourns the Wicked. If you haven’t read it, the Drew Crew put on a musical - “Wicked”, which originally starred Idina Menzel (who won a Tony for it). It’s also got a supernatural mystery that generally follows Season 1 of Nancy Drew, but with many twists and turns that entwine it with the musical plot. And of course Nace - lots of Nace.
You can read it with the knowledge that the crew can really sing. So when Ace is singing the oh so romantic lyrics to “As Long As You’re Mine” to Nancy, you can imagine him legit singing (swoon). I hope you give it a try if you haven’t already!

The War Outside Our Door Keeps Raging On
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/J6KRLen by Imapieceofpaper It ended with a knife and a boy. Nancy could still remember how it felt, watching the light leave his eyes, the twist of the blade under his skin. She stood back, covered in blood, and fell to her knees as the cannon shot and Caesar Flickerman shouted in elation that she, Nancy Drew, was the winner of the 70th Hunger Games. Coming home felt like walking into your room with everything adjusting six inches to the left. Yes, that was her Dad, and yes, that was her mom, and yes, this was her bed. But nothing felt real anymore. The money, the new house, the shower of food and resources for that one, glorious year in District 12. Even the Victory Tour, though painful, felt like something fake, something warped through a mirror or ten. That was until her mom got sick.   * * * Nancy Drew is the Victor of the 70th Hunger Games, and is quickly pushed to be a Mentor for the District 12 Tributes. There, she wrestles with protecting her tributes, dealing with other victors, and making some unlikely friends, including Ace, the boy from Three who dislikes the Capitol a little more than everyone else... the way I went to re-read earth air water trees IMMEDIATELY on seeing you'd reblogged a fic ask game, so I could say:
one of the many moments in that fics that made me sicko in the window.jpg:
When he reaches her groin he pauses, breathing open-mouthed, and then softly, fleetingly licks it.
Nancy’s body jolts. “Wow.”
Ace pulls back, panting. “Sorry—was that weird—I’m sorry—”
your turn!! <3
BETHANY!!! <333 i am putting on "earth air water trees" the song so that i can approach this glorious question with full immersion.
fick ask game
that moment also made me sicko in the window.jpg, i won't lie. any time i had to write any physical intimacy rather than emotional i felt like i had injected myself with jet fuel. i am so glad you liked that part because i loved writing the parts where ace's cool and collected front cracked for 0.2 seconds because he was so attracted to nancy and that was one of them!
the moment in that fic that probably made me the most yeeesss hahaha yesssss (sicko) to write was this:
Nancy could mull that over for hours and still not know how to respond to it. For some reason, it sends a hairline crack through whatever illusory moment she’s climbed into with him—for some reason, it’s this, and not any of the things that came before it, that makes her want to run. She does the next best thing. “You can—pretend I’m Amanda, if it’s easier.”  Ace murmurs something into her thigh, his voice soft and slurred. Nancy swears—swears, for a dizzying moment—that what he says is, don’t have to pretend. “What?” she gasps. “What?”  Ace pulls away, his features stiff with an emotion Nancy can’t identify. Something close to guilt, to yearning, to self-hatred.  “You can pretend I’m Gil,” he says without looking her in the eye. “If that’s easier.”
i was truly obsessed with the messiness of season 2 and the fact that nancy and ace were EACH INVOLVED WITH ONE OF THE BOBBSEY TWINS and how these respective involvements seemed to really make them notice idk how invested they were in what the other was doing, romantically, physically. the wraith era was such a great sandbox to play in because i loved exploring how nancy's (supernaturally induced but still, quietly, achingly present from the start) self-destructive tendencies would react to this situation, and how ace in turn would react to them (before knowing that they were supernaturally induced)—understanding them, but still being hurt by them. it's like, ace has just handed her something so intimate and genuine, such an unvarnished piece of love, and because of her self-doubt and the wraith's exacerbation thereof she can't accept it. at all. she just has to look away from it. she just has to remind them why they're both there, although is it really why they're both there? can she even imagine the alternative, that he's there for a reason other than what she thinks?
of course my hope is that the reader will want to shake her and be like NANCY HE CLEARLY IS IN LOVE WITH YOU but also understand that nancy can't see that in the moment. and i was imagining what was going through ace's mind upon hearing amanda's name, upon hearing the notion that nancy would expect him to PRETEND HE'S GOING DOWN ON AMANDA INSTEAD OF HER, and not knowing how to get into how not true that is but also being a little stung by it, a little jolted from the moment. like, when she says this, he remembers that she's supposedly with gil, just as she remembers that he's supposedly with amanda. and this is an exchange that could unravel the whole thing, but it doesn't, because even under these circumstances they're ceding ground to one another, letting up slack when the other needs it, leveling the playing field. and ace is like, god, you know what, worth it. in this one moment. before there are consequences to wanting this.
in the wise words of the great marie kondo: i'm so excited because i love... mess. :)
fun fact, this exchange—verbatim—was actually the VERY FIRST PART of the fic that came to me and i was so sicko in the window about it that i was like well. guess we should explore this. see below!
Tumblr media
ugh, bethany, this season is turning me inside-out. hold me.
THANK YOU FOR LOVING THIS FIC <3

for me, the most annoying thing about the second season is that Nancy and Ace are building a relationship with the Bobbsey twins. but this is an amazing parallel: here they are both asking about the twins' mother. both couples look the same: the man on the left, the woman on the right. a few more episodes, and Nancy will break up with Gil, and Amanda will break up with Ace. and then these photos seem to overlap, and Ace and Nancy will be together again. there are no empty seats. Nancy will replace Amanda. Ace will replace Gil.
the puzzle will be assembled.

hi hello me again i finished s2 of nancy drew last night and it was SO GOOD. the arc of it was really well done and i loved all the single-episode stories that built up to the wraith. the crew becoming closer and more complex, the dads, nancy struggling with her sense of self and belonging, the world building, all of it. (nancy is my best girl and i love her so much)
absolutely obsessed with the drew crew dynamic. no bad pairings, the balance of their personalities and skills, all of it. every time nancy, bess and george are together i am happy. they really are a family and they take care of each other. i am so seated to learn more about the road back and for whatever bullshit temperance is up to with them !!!
still loving the nace slow burn!! this season really builds on what s1 started and it was so angsty and jealous. obviously gil is terrible (i cheered when she broke up with him) but i’m pleasantly surprised by amanda. the fact that she asked if ace and nancy were ever together after she saw them crack a safe together???? she would not survive seeing them just exist around each other like they usually do sorry girly :/
favorite episode is by FAR 2x10. i’m writing down favorite moments as i watch and the entry for that episode is double the length of the rest lol. other best moments:
2x03 nancy and the dads finally lay lucy to rest
2x06 kitchen autopsy
2x11 attempts montage
2x13 birdie and nancy on the dock
2x16 nancy finds celia’s body/carson finds the polaroid
2x18 the entire wraith dreamscape
hoping to watch s3 this week and then start watching s4 with everyone weekly!! the fandom seems so lovely i’m excited ❤️
Hii!!!!! S2 is and will probably always be my favorite season. S4 is a solid competitor, but it probably won't be able to top it since it's competing against the nostalgia factor too lol.
I'm really glad you enjoyed all the drew crew and character stuff in s2! There's a bunch of episodes in there where they get to just exist in their relationships - s2 had the time to do that - and it's so great.
With the road back, I will warn you (😭😭) it's as of now not going to be brought up again. Long story short, trb was the big bad of Tom Swift, which was canceled one season in. The writers said though they imagined an episode where Nancy and Tamura would show up and they'd wrap up everything with Celia.
Gil is the worst! I like Amanda too. And really, as bad as Gil is - I don't mind him as a character. In some other world I like to imagine there was a Bobbsey spinoff and he'd have a chance at some deep character development. Lol and the SAFE SCENE!?!? "No vibe just friends," Ace says, lying.
2x10 - ICONIC.. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY!
I loveeeee the end of 2x03 so much. It's so sad and beautiful and I cry every time.
I LOVE 2x06!!!!! Easily one of my favorite episodes of the whole show. If you didn't know, if not for covid 2x05 would have been the end of s1. But they made 1x18 the finale when they had to stop filming. So that's why 2x06 has a premiere feel to it!
The 2x11 attempts montage is so well done. What an all around fantastic episode too. A great one for Nick and for Tunji to show off his acting.
The 2x13 scene with Birdie.. so so good. Perhaps a theme here but that also makes me cry. I always imagine the idea behind that scene as a possible end to the show too. Nancy watching the fireworks with the rest of the drew crew would bring things really full circle.
2x16 is devastating!! Ugh I still remember watching it for the first time and the shock of it. And Nancy crying because she doesn't want Celia to go.
Gosh the entirety of 2x18 is ART. All the detail put into the dreamscape, the drew crew helping Nancy through it, the nace scene at the bluffs!!! What more could you ask for.
Nace in s2.. will always be so famous. They're just walking the line of friends to something more and as far as slowburns go that's one of the best parts.
It took me a sec to respond to this so you might have already started s3..!? I hope you enjoy!!! If I'm being honest it's my least favorite season overall. However, it has some of my favorite episodes of the whole show. So it does balance out.

Kennedy to the rescue! Kennedy took time out of her vacation to confirm the S4 titles posted on IMDB aren’t real.
Tumblr media
Thank you for your service, Kennedy! This hasn’t stopped featured actors from continuing to pop up on various episodes. The latest is Allison Thornton appearing in Episode 3 - she played “Birdie” in Season 2’s The Beacon of Moonstone Island.
Tumblr media
Assuming this is real - I love the idea of a return for Birdie, she was a memorable character who Nancy formed a real connection with. According to the Season 4 season synopsis, the Crew will be drawn into a series of supernatural mysteries that lead them to believe the sins of the past are returning to Horseshoe Bay. Could Birdie and the Fire Souls be one of them?
Episode 3 is also the episode that Kennedy said had one of her favorite scenes, and from comments from both Kennedy and the writers/showrunners it appears to contain an emotional Nace scene (don’t forget the BTS photo in Icarus Hall where Nancy and Ace’s stand-ins had marks that would place them face to face!).
Tumblr media
GIF courtesy of @acenancy
Moonstone Island if you remember has many emotionally charged encounters with Nancy and Ace, with jealousy about their respective relationships with the Bobbseys out in the open (“You and Amanda?” “You and Gil.”), and a wraith-affected Nancy rejecting Ace’s peace offering out on the Claw’s deck. Could those memories come into play with Birdie’s return? Could it actually be the impetus for Ace’s confession of how long he’s had feelings for Nancy, which Noga Landau confirmed would happen early in Season 4?
Please bring me Season 4, stat!

Amanda Bobbsey and Nancy Drew: two sides of the same coin
Tumblr media
I have a feeling this is going to be a controversial point, but I've got to make it. A lot of people dislike Amanda Bobbsey and it seems to be a combination of factors (her standing in the way of Nace being one), but I do think that some people are made uncomfortable by the fact that Amanda represents what Nancy could have been without a helluva lot of white privilege and money.
I'd like to posit my theory that Amanda and Nancy are actually incredibly similar people and it's only their circumstances that separate them. If you look at their characterization and you like Nancy, the things you like about her are things you'd like about Amanda if given the chance. The difference is really that Amanda was never given a chance in her life, and that's a purposeful choice on the writers' part. They've made a lot of episodes touching on society's ills before and the parallel between Amanda and Nancy is a massive one that's gone unnoticed. This is about privilege, poverty, and breaking free from toxic family patterns.
Amanda is so similar to Nancy in so many ways, and I believe that's why Ace was drawn to her in the first place. She and Nancy are both smart, competent, caring, cunning, loyal, and headstrong. (It's because Amanda's being loyal to people we don't like that we're bothered, but Nancy stood up for people her friends didn't like, people like Celia, and we stood by her.) Amanda has a solid job, volunteers as an EMT, and skirts the law when it benefits her. Sounds familiar? Like Nancy, she reflects her upbringing to a point but also bucks against it when she feels she knows better. She was raised to be a thief and could have turned out selfish and vindictive just like her brother, but managed to forge her own path and works to treat others differently.
She is a bit of a foil to Nancy in a lot of ways, and that's why I'm so glad the show hasn't really pitted them against each other when they had many chances to do so. Amanda and Nancy both lost their mothers and have complicated relationships with their fathers and have historically shied away from sharing their emotions with others. They've both been hurt deeply by those close to them.
The big difference is that Amanda doesn't have the support system that Nancy does. They both keep losing but Amanda is out there alone, floating around with only herself to rely on, while Nancy keeps getting saved by her friends and family, no matter how much she pushes them away. The show continues, and as Nancy gains more and more people, Amanda only has Ace. Her brother shows himself to be nothing but a toxic drain on her time and emotions and her feelings of responsibility toward him keep her from breaking free from his hold on her.
She tries to maintain a relationship with her father and there's obvious love there, but he's unwilling to sacrifice his freedom to give her what she needs. And who can blame him? We've all heard about the mistreatment of incarcerated individuals, especially BIPOC, and he may be terrified to return. While it is his fault that he started a criminal enterprise the moment he got out of prison, what's not his fault is that it's almost impossible for people leaving prison to find work. His actions toward Ace are inexcusable, but his desperation to avoid more prison time is understandable.
Amanda's relationship with Ace was doomed from the moment he offered to help Bertram upon his release. It ended with her in an impossible position between Ace and her father, with no choice available to her where she could keep her ties with both of them intact. Once again, her life was negatively impacted by outside forces she had no control over and she's left with no one to lean on. At least by letting Ace be the one to turn in her father, she might be able to salvage a relationship with a person that she knows will be a part of the rest of her life. She knew from the moment she realized Ace would follow her that Ace wouldn't be that guy. She made the prudent choice.
Amanda said harsh words to Ace, no differently than Nancy has done to her friends when she's been backed into a corner. We just never get to see Amanda's redemption arc, even a little single-episode arc. People like Amanda don't often get to experience that; they're rarely afforded the opportunities for forgiveness and growth that Nancy has been given over and over and Amanda is no exception. She even gave up her own twin brother's hiding spots to her new boyfriend and his friends without a second thought to help George when they were looking for the shroud and that gained her nothing but Gil's possible ire, and she got zero points for that from anyone on the Drew Crew and barely anyone in the fandom. Once again, Amanda was demonized for being involved in her family's criminal history rather than credited for breaking out of a lifelong pattern of what she had been taught and growing as a person.
While Nancy's family does experience some financial hardship at one point, Carson is a lawyer and they live in a huge house. Even if they have to sell the house to pay Kate's medical bills, Carson still has a high-paying job that will get them back on track. They also have a second (white male) adult in the house that attended college and can find a job. He also has connections in high places that will surely get them on their feet. Amanda, on the other hand, lives in a trailer she doesn't own and works a job that can't pay much money. She doesn't have anyone besides her brother to pay bills for her.
Amanda is Nancy, but with no reliable family, no trustworthy friends, and no financial resources. She's got nothing beyond her own will and fortitude, which she has in spades. Only the future will tell if it is enough to get her to where Nancy has settled so comfortably with her friends and family, her purpose and her future. The parallels of Nancy and Amanda show us how privilege works, and how it touches on lives in a multitude of ways. These two women keep getting battered from all sides by external forces and they both keep standing back up, but Nancy is the only one getting ahead some of the time. Each time Amanda stands back up, she's down another person and behind just a bit more in life. While Nancy has lost some things and people, she has gained community respect, a new job, a real purpose in life, and surety about herself. What does Amanda have to show for all this pain? She's the real tragic figure of Nancy Drew and I, for one, hope she gets a win soon. (Like a Bobbsey Twin show, because I'd love to explore these two complex characters more and see what Amanda can really do.)
