Steve realizes he’s falling in love with Dwight, asks some other survivors for advice cause he’s super confused about falling for a guy.
i’m sorry this took ages, i loved this prompt and wanted to do it justice!
disclaimer: even though this is meant to be fluff&humor, there are mentions of internalized homophobia. i’ve also never written any coming out themes before but i tried my best!
How Steve Harrington realized he’s a disaster bi
It’s just another neverending-dawn-day in the fog. Steve is minding his own business, working on generators, teabagging the killer, clicking his flashlight in Yui’s face until she slaps him—you know, the usual stuff.
And then he and Dwight escape the trial and Dwight’s smile is so wide and happy even while his teeth are covered in blood and he’s running with an obvious limp. But he’s smiling at Steve and praising him, and something finally clicks in Steve’s empty no-good jock brain and there’s only two things he knows for certain;
One, Dwight is a guy. Two, he’s most definitely falling for Dwight.
Back at camp, he has a small mental breakdown. Does this mean he’s gay? Who does he even talk to about this stuff? His thoughts immediately drift to Robin, but she’s not here. Nancy is out of the question. Sure, they’ve grown closer after being stuck in the Entity’s playground together, but he’s not about to ask his ex-girlfriend-now-friend about dating a guy. What if she’d be offended?
Quentin is probably his closest friend in the realm, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to weird him out. Is it weird to tell your bro you might be into dudes? Steve isn’t sure, but he doesn’t want to take the risk.
Kate is a sweetheart and Steve knows for sure she wouldn’t judge. But she’s also a huge gossip, and Steve would rather not half the camp know before he’s even sure himself.
Eventually, Steve makes up his mind and goes to Jane. She’s always taking on a motherly role, surely she’s up for giving him some advice?
“Jane, can I ask you something?” Steve starts, sitting down next to the woman when the camp is mostly empty, only Ash loudly telling another incredulous story to an unimpressed Feng Min and raptly listening Adam.
“Only if it’s not about another flashlight,” Jane says with fond exasperation, a smile on her lips.
“Nah, not this time,” Steve says, shooting her an apologetic grin for all the items he’s ‘borrowed’ from her and never managed to return. The grin fades when he tries to think of how to bring up the subject. “I think I like someone and I'm pretty sure they don't like me back,” he finally settles on, quiet enough for the trio on the other side of camp not to hear.
"You ‘think’?” Jane repeats, eyebrows scrunching together.
“I’m not… entirely sure,” Steve tries to explain. “We're just, like, friends.”
“But you want something more?” Jane tries to prod for more information.
“Yeah. Maybe. Probably,” Steve tries to decide. Damn, his thoughts are a mess. “It’s… um. A guy,” he confesses, staring at the ground so Jane doesn’t see the flush creeping up on his cheeks. He just prays that Jane won’t be disgusted or laugh or—
“Oh,” Jane says, and there’s definitely surprise in her voice, but she doesn’t sound judgmental. “Is this the first time you’ve had feelings for another man?”
“Yeah,” Steve says, relieved at her reaction. “How do I know if I’m gay?”
Instead of blessing him with some great wisdom, Jane mulls over the question, before sighing.
“I’m sorry, I don’t think I can help you,” she says apologetically.
“That’s okay,” Steve says, trying not to deflate at her reply.
“But… God, I hate to say this,” she sighs, making Steve perk back up. “This might be the one time you’d probably benefit from asking Ace. He’s very… open about this stuff.”
Steve hums in thought. He’s not particularly close to Ace, but there’s no denying the gambler is quite… flamboyant. Jane might be right, surely Ace will help him sort this whole gay thing out?
“I’ll give it a shot! Thanks Jane!” Steve chirps, getting up with a new plan of action.
“And don’t tell him I sent you!” Jane warns, and Steve rolls his eyes and grins at the duo’s fake animosity towards each other.
A couple trials later, Steve and Ace are mori’d nearly simultaneously and have to trek back to camp together through the fog. Ace is whistling a carefree tune like he didn’t just get impaled by a chainsaw, and Steve figures this opportunity is as good as any.
“Ace, you're like… gay, right?” ‘Wow; smooth, Harrington,’ Steve mentally berates himself as Ace’s whistling abruptly cuts off and he turns to face him.
“That's got to be the worst pick-up-line I've heard in my life,” Ace says, quirking an amused eyebrow.
“No, shit, I wasn't—” Steve starts panicking.
"Relax, I'm just messing with you,” Ace grins. “What's up?”
Steve pauses, calming his heart rate and trying to figure out how he should approach the subject.
“How did you know?” Steve manages to ask. When Ace only cocks his head in confusion, Steve pushes through the embarrassment to continue. “That you're… into guys.”
“Oh!” Ace exclaims, face lighting up in realization. “I—well. I saw hot guys and wanted to sleep with them? It was pretty easy to tell, in my case.”
“So it was just, like… sexual?” Steve asks, frowning. That's definitely not what he feels for Dwight, at least not the biggest part of it.
“I’ve never really been the romantic type,” Ace explains, shrugging. “If you need relationship advice, I'm probably the last guy to ask.”
Oh. That’s a little disappointing. Ace starts telling a story about some wild adventure with a rich mafia leader’s son and Steve kind of tunes out and tries to figure out who he could ask for help next.
He eventually settles on Nea when the opportunity presents itself and he arrives into camp after a trial to find her sitting by herself.
“I think I like a guy and I'm freaking out." Well. That was unnecessary blunt. Instead of laughing in his face, Nea just pinches her eyebrows together.
“Are you having an unrequited love crisis or a sexuality crisis?” Nea asks him to clarify.
“Uh. Both.”
“Well, shit.”
“Yeah.”
“Let me know if you figure something out.”
“Wait, you don't have any advice?”
“Dude, I'm the biggest lesbian disaster you'll ever meet,” she snorts, before sobering up and looking almost regretful. “It's been years and I still haven't told her I like her.”
“Oh. Rip,” Steve says, cringing in sympathy. He never realized Nea was into girls, but they’re apparently in almost the exact same situation. Hopefully Steve won’t end up pining for years, though. Suddenly, he has an idea. “If I end up confessing, you have to too,” Steve decides, nudging her with his elbow.
“Deal,” Nea says, face twisting into a grin.
With no help from Nea, Steve ends up in a bit of a slump for a couple of days. He doesn’t know who else to approach for advice, because everyone he asks is another risk that Dwight will find out. Maybe he should just confess to Dwight? But who the hell wants to hear ‘I think I like you but I’m not sure’? Steve sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
“Wha's wrong, mate?” David’s voice snaps him out of his thoughts and he looks over to the man. Shit, Steve had been so deep in thought he hadn’t even noticed another batch of their friends getting called into a trial. It’s just him and David, along with Jake who is softly snoring on the other side of camp.
Steve would have never expected David to pick up on his mood, but the brawler keeps surprising him with just how tuned into everyone’s emotions he is. Even now, David isn't looking at him mockingly, he seems genuinely curious at his obvious shift in attitude.
“Just falling for someone who doesn't feel the same. You know, typical bullshit,” Steve tries to joke. He expects David to laugh, but instead the other's face morphs into a sympathetic smile.
“Same,” David says, faraway gaze staring into the campfire.
David being soft? In love? Steve has no idea who the other is into and that he’d even want a committed relationship. And who wouldn’t want David? He’s seen all of the girls ogling his toned chest at least once.
Although Steve does feel a little better knowing he's not the only one suffering from heartbreak. He just sits quietly with David and stares at the fire until the others get back and the companionable silence is broken.
Steve doesn’t know how many more days pass, but he realizes he’s getting nowhere. To make matters worse, Dwight keeps being annoyingly handsome and adorable and Steve’s poor heart doesn’t know what to do with itself.
Maybe that’s why he decides to be so blunt.
“Do you think Dwight likes me?” Steve asks Claudette when she’s patching him up after a rough trial.
“Of course!” she smiles warmly, clearly not getting his point.
“No, I mean…” Steve chews on his lip nervously. “Do you think he likes me?”
Claudette’s hands pause on his leg, and she only has time to look up at him in clear surprise, when Meg appears out of nowhere.
“What exactly are your intentions with him?” Meg demands, glaring at Steve and making it obvious she’s been eavesdropping. Steve is kind of surprised; out of everyone, Meg bullies and teases Dwight the most, which has made him dislike her a little. But apparently, she's also fiercely protective of him.
“I, uh,” Steve starts, a little taken aback by Meg’s threatening energy. “I want to date him,” he finally manages to put the feelings from the last couple of weeks into words. Meg hesitates a little, gauging him warily before speaking again.
“I didn’t know you were bi,” Meg finally says and Steve has a small epiphany. Bi. So he’s not necessarily gay after all!
Well. He’s a little gay, fantasizing about holding Dwight in his arms and kissing him silly. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t also like girls; it just means his current crush is a guy. But if Dwight rejects him, he could easily fall for a girl in the future. Or another guy. The thought doesn’t bother him nearly as much as he anticipated. It’s just the way things are.
“Helloooo? Anyone home?” Meg is getting impatient, waving a hand in front of his face while Claudette tries to defuse, feebly pulling on Meg’s arm.
“I didn’t, either,” Steve confesses. “I just… recently figured it out.” He tactfully leaves out the fact that ‘recently’ means ‘literally five seconds ago’.
“Are you sure?” Meg pushes. “Are you sure you’re gonna treat him right? Are you gonna like him even if he grows a beard? Are you gonna be able to suck a dick, or any you gonna freak out and dump him?”
“Meg!” Claudette exclaims, mortified and a deep flush on her cheeks. Steve shares her sentiment, resisting the urge to jump into the burning campfire to escape the embarrassment of Meg’s crude words. Sure, he’s thought about doing… stuff, with Dwight, but he’s only been with one person before and even talking about sex just makes him blush and cringe.
“Well?” Meg demands. “If you’re not sure, don’t bother. Dwight deserves better than being your shitty experiment.”
Steve hesitates. What if she’s right? What if he ends up panicking and hurting Dwight?
“Meg, he just came out!” Claudette jumps in to defend him, surprising both Steve and Meg by her assertiveness. “Let him figure it out on his own, or with Dwight. It’s not fair to push your own insecurities on him!”
Huh? Claudette’s words confuse Steve even further; Meg is insecure? He sees the sprinter’s demeanor change instantly, going from confrontational to withdrawn as the words sink in.
“I… shit,” Meg sighs, running a hand over her face. “You’re right. I’m sorry, dude.”
“It’s cool,” Steve says, still more confused than anything. The subject is abruptly dropped, and Claudette finishes patching his wound up before going to braid Meg’s hair and muttering an apology to the mopey redhead.
Steve later realizes neither or the girls ended up answering his question about Dwight. Out of options, Steve decides it’s finally time to ask Quentin.
“Hey man, what’s up?” Quentin greets with a friendly half-smile before going back to stocking a med-kit, not seeming at all bothered that Steve has been avoiding him for the better part of a week. And, well, since he asked…
“I've just realized I'm bi,” Steve says. To his credit, Quentin just looks up, a completely neutral expression on his face.
“Congrats. Welcome to the club,” Quentin says with a small grin.
“Uh… You could at least pretend to be surprised?” Steve jokes but his eyebrows have shot up into his hairline in disbelief. Quentin is also bi? Why the fuck didn't he go to Quentin first?
“Had my suspicions,” the other grins. “What made you realize?”
“I've uh… I started crushing on a dude and it took me ages to realize that it wasn't really normal to wanna do couple-y stuff with your bro,” Steve explains.
Shit, does Quentin think he's talking about him? Luckily, the other just hums in acknowledgement.
“Gonna tell me who it is?” Quentin asks.
Steve hesitates, but since he's already come this far…
“It's Dwight,” Steve sighs. “I just don't know if I even have a shot.”
“Dude, Dwight is so gay, and he adores you,” Quentin says with a bright smile, and Steve blushes and scratches at his neck in embarrassment. “You have a ginormous shot.”
Steve can’t help the hopeful grin on his face. This is what he wanted to hear, all this time! He feels much better now, he’s going to tell Dwight and—
“Unlike me,” Quentin adds quietly, smile fading and kicking at the dirt with his sneaker. Steve takes a few seconds to get his brain out of mushy la-la-land, and then he realizes Quentin is talking about a crush of his own.
“Excuse you, what the fuck? You're awesome, who wouldn't like you?” so Steve is a little passionate about defending his best friend, sue him.
“Eh, I guess he likes me well enough, but he's straight,” Quentin shrugs. “Like, painfully so.”
“How do you know that?” Steve asks. Okay, so he correctly analyzed Steve was bi—it could have been a lucky guess!
“I keep flirting and he keeps ignoring it. Pretty obvious,” Quentin mutters, still pouting. Steve racks his brain for if he’s ever seen Quentin flirt with any of the guys, but he draws up a blank. Usually Quentin just snarks and sounds like he’s trying to pick a fight.
“Maybe you just suck at flirting,” Steve suggests.
“Fuck you!” Quentin scoffs in mock offense, elbowing him in the ribs.
“Gonna tell me who it is?” Steve asks, nudging Quentin back and parroting his earlier question. Quentin looks at him, grins, and says:
“Nope!”
“What the fuck!?” Steve says, shoving Quentin playfully while the other just laughs. “I told you mine! You suck!”
After his next trial, Steve comes into camp to find Quentin arguing with David, which is nothing out of the ordinary—Quentin’s snarks really do come across as confrontational, and David is always easily provoked. Before Steve can even figure out what the argument is about, Quentin throws his hands up in exasperation and stomps off into the woods.
Instead of seething with anger and clenching his fists like he usually does after an interrupted fight, David just stares at his retreating form with a sad expression on his face. It’s the exact same look that Steve saw when he talked about the person he could never have.
Combined with the fact that Quentin likes someone ‘painfully straight’ who doesn’t realize that Quentin’s flirting sounds like he’s picking a fight?
And again, something in Steve's head just clicks.
“You should go after him,” Steve says, causing several heads to turn in his direction, David's among them.
“It’s probably best to let him cool off,” Jane protests, giving Steve a pointed look.
“I think it's a good idea,” Dwight, his adorable cheerleader, pipes up nervously. “Maybe the privacy would benefit you.”
David pauses for a second, then nods.
“Son, if you end up throwing fists—” Bill starts, annoyed.
“I won't,” David assures and disappears into the tree line after Quentin.
“That was a good call. I hope they make up,” Dwight says, scooting closer to Steve on the log and giving him a small smile.
Steve stares into Dwight's kind eyes. He's so amazing, always having his back, caring so much about the others being happy and getting along. God, he’s such a good person and Steve—
“I love you,” Steve hears himself saying, and it's like time itself comes to a halt.
He sees Bill’s cigarette fall out of the veteran’s mouth and a deck of cards scatter along he ground as Ace drops them in surprise. He hears Nea choke on nothing and hears Jane gasp as her eyes widen in disbelief.
Steve is about to stutter out an apology, to explain or joke it off, but Dwight is suddenly pulling him to his feet.
“Let’s go for a walk,” Dwight squeaks, cheeks red and glancing anxiously at the others, who are still gawking.
Dwight leads him a little way into the woods, and Steve nervously waits for him to say something, biting his tongue as to not blurt out something more he’s going to regret. But then Dwight is turning to him and looking up at him with his big, brown eyes and Steve couldn’t speak even if he wanted to.
“Do you mean it?” Dwight asks, a lot of his anxiousness replaced by a hopeful energy. God, those eyes, he’s so cute—
“Yeah,” Steve says, swallowing nervously.
“Really?” Dwight asks, somehow still unsure, bottom lip trembling like he’s about to cry—
“Yeah,” Steve repeats, this time with much more confidence, placing a hand on Dwight’s waist. Dwight smiles brightly and in a bold move that Steve doesn’t expect but wholeheartedly welcomes, Dwight leans up just the tiniest amount to make their lips meet.
It’s a lot different than kissing Nancy. For one, Dwight is much taller than a girl. His glasses also bump into Steve’s nose and Steve tilts his head to avoid them, which inadvertently causes the kiss to deepen. Dwight’s hair is unfamiliarly short when Steve’s hand cups the back of his head, but it feels nice; almost as soft as his own.
Kissing Dwight should feel weird, but it doesn’t. The motions are the same, and the warm fluttering in his chest is the same. It’s different than what he’s used to, but not in a bad way.
They finally pull away and end up just smiling dopily at each other.
“Um…” Dwight starts, clearing his throat. “At this point it’s probably obvious, but I really like you too,” he says, eyes crinkling at the corners because of how wide his smile is.
Steve doesn’t care that he didn’t say ‘love’, and he’s a little embarrassed that he just blurted it out like a shitty romance novel damsel, but he doesn’t really regret it if this is the outcome. Now, he just really has to know—
“Do you wanna be my boyfriend?” Steve asks, not caring if it’s too soon. He’s already fucked up the rules of dating; he’s pretty sure love confessions are supposed to come after getting together. So what’s one milestone more?
“I’d love to,” Dwight says, and he’s so happy and it makes Steve grin like the idiot he is. But now he’s Dwight’s idiot.
They make their way back to camp holding hands and exchanging soft glances.
Steve looks at the others; everyone has mostly collected themselves, Ace picking up his cards and Jane clearing her throat and Nea sneaking glances, but nobody comments.
Well, except one.
“It was about goddamn time,” Bill mutters, smirking knowingly against his cigarette. Holy shit, apparently the old coot is much more perceptive than Steve thought, as Ace and Nea both attack him with questions of “How the fuck could you have known!?”.
Steve is on cloud nine for the rest of the day, sitting with his Dwight and holding his hand and exchanging smiles and it all feels so right.
Bonus:
Steve’s grin grows impossibly wider when he later spots Quentin walking out of the trees, dragging a dopey David after him by his arm. Quentin is blushing a little and glares at Ace who wolf-whistles at their arrival.
And then Steve spots numerous hickies on David’s throat and blushes furiously, burying his face against Dwight’s shoulder. He feels Dwight tilt his head in confusion.
“I can’t believe I made them fuck,” Steve mumbles against his boyfriend’s shirt, and Dwight chuckles softly.
“You didn’t see it coming?” Dwight teases. “I thought it was obvious. The tension between those two has always been insane.”
Steve lifts up his head, realizing something.
“Wait, so did you also know I was into you?” Steve asks. Dwight blushes and averts his eyes.
“No, not really—I mean I was hopeful, but I didn’t think anything would actually come of it,” he explains, glancing over with a shy smile.
“Glad to have proven you wrong,” Steve grins, flopping his head back against Dwight’s shoulder and squeezing his hand.
“Me too,” Dwight murmurs against his hair.
“Aw, fuck,” Nea suddenly exclaims on the other side of the campfire, letting her head fall back against a tree with a ‘thunk’. Steve and Dwight both look over, Dwight clearly concerned and Steve with a shit-eating grin. He didn’t forget their little promise, and apparently, neither did Nea.

Tommy pushed Alastor away. "We are receiving word that a new player has entered the ongoing turf war! Let’s go to the live feed!"
Shows Niffty kicking Cherryboi ass.
"Di Mi!." Alastor whispered.
"Dee Me indeed! It looks like the one who just joined the battle is none other than-" gasp "-porn actress Niffty! What a juicy coincidence! You must feel really stupid right now." Tommy said
Tommy and Kate laugh. "Ratings!"
Alastor gasped, "Don’t look at this!" He tried to hid the window on the greenscreen.
"Well, it sure looks like your little project is dead on arrival. Tell us, how does it feel to be such a total failure?" Tommy asked.
"Yeah? Well- how does it feel that I got your pen, huh? Dick?!" Alastor shouted.
Tommy went silent.
Alastor nervously laughs, "Sorry." Put the pen back.
Kate runs away while Tommy got the flamethrower
Back in the streets
"Hey thanks for the backup, Niffts!" Pentious shouted.
"You kiddin'? This is the best action I've seen in ages!" Niffty replied.
Pentious throws a egg bomb. "Where have you been anyways? I thought you died or something."
"Oh I wish! I've been staying at this dirty hotel on the other side of town. Some guys let me stay rent free if I play nice His words, not mine. These assholes are no fun! I’ve been clean for two weeks!" Niffty answered.
"Holy crap." Pentious replied.
"Well, sorta clean. As clean as you can get with a shitload of Bolivian marching powder." Niffty replied.
Cherri whips and ties Niffty up in a vine.
"Oh, harder mommy!" Niffty moaned.
Cherri gasp, "Daughter?!"
Niffty raise the brow in a "Da fuck?" way.
"You douches have no style! In war, the side remembered is the side with the most style." Cherri pop her collar up.
"Or the side that ain’t 6 feet under." Pentious replied.
"Speaking of style, what's up with the colors, it's red this and red that. Is it that time of the month?" Pentious quipped.
"Oh, well, that’s none of your goddamn business, now is it?" Cherri shouted.
"Oh yeah we're not suppose to talk about that." Niffty quipped.
"I’m going to blow you to bits!" Cherri threatened.
"Hm! Kinky!" Niffty quipped.
"Oh, not like that! creep!" Cherri replied.
Cherriyboi shoots at Niffty with a vine net gun.
"Not so cocky now, are we?" Cherri threatened.
"Y’know, you really gotta watch what comes out of your mouth. I’ve been making these sex jokes the whole-" Cherri pulls out a smg "-TIME! And it’s obvious ya ain’t catchin’ on-" Niffty kicks Cherri, takes her gun and shoots at the Cherryboi. "-I mean, it’s just SAD!
"So think you’re gonna get in a lot of trouble for this?" Pentious asked.
"Eh, what’s one little brawl gonna cause?" Niffty asked.
Back in the newsroom.
Alastor and Tommy are going at it fisticuffs, while the flamethrower is blowing fire to the right of the desk.
Kate runs into view of the camera while on fire. "Why won’t anyone help me?!" She screams.
Back in the streets.
"Glad ya haven’t changed. You know you’re my favorite gal to party with!" Pentious shouted.
"You know it, you slimy snake. You ready to finish this?" Niffty asked.
"Hell yeah, baby." Pentious answered.
Niffty, Pentious, Ms Cherri, CherryBois, Alastor, Tommy, and Kate yelling in a 4 screen split.
In the Limo driving to the hotel
Niffty was playing with the window
Husk carving a wooden steak and giving Niffty the death stare.
Niffty looks up to Husk, "What?"
"What? What?! What were you fucking doing?!" Husk shouted.
Niffty sighs, "Look I owed my snake buddy a solid! Isn’t that a “redeeming quality"? Helping pals with stuff?" Niffty shouted.
"Not with turf wars that result in genocide!" Husk shouted.
"Eh, you win some, you lose a few hundred, plus didn't you caused a Genocide." Niffty snickers.
Husk throws the wooden steak at Niffty which pierced throw the window.
"Aw come on, I had to! My credibility was on the line-" Niffty sighs "-I mean, what kind of reputation would I have if people found out I was trying to go clean? It just throws out my entire persona."
"Your credibility? What about the hotel? Your little stunt made us look like fucking clowns!" Husk shouted.
"No no no, hon. Clowns are funny! I made you look… uh, sad! And pathetic! Like an orphan, with no arms, or legs… Uh… oh, with progeria! Great! Now I’m bummed thinking about it! This thing have any liquor?" Niffty asked.
"Can you please just try to take this seriously?" Husk asked.
"Fine, I’ll try, just don’t bitch to your mother while you're fucking her." Niffty quipped.
"What was that you trying to be?" Husk got up and pulled out his knife.
"Whatever pisses you off the most. Is there seriously no liquor in here?!" Niffty shouted.
"I’m gonna kill her." Husk sat back down.
"Too late, hon. Wait, would that make me double dead? And where exactly do I go, to double Hell? Sorry, you’re stuck with me, bitch. Get used to it." Niffty laughs.
"Fucking bitch!" Husk mumbled.
"Listen, who cares if some jagoffs got hurt? Most of them are ugly freaks. Look around! Got a bunch of fuckin’ harlequin babies down here." Niffty said.
"You’re one to talk." Husk quipped.
"Hey! This body is flawless! Everyone wants some of me, and I’ve got the creepy fan letters to prove it!" Niffty pulls out a letter with stains.
"That was really not swell y’know, Niffty" Alastor said.
"Not Sweel?! After that trainwreck, there is no way anyone is gonna wanna stay at the hotel. All thanks to you and your selfish bullshit!" Husk shouted.
"Does that mean I don’t have a free room anymore?" Niffty asked.
Husk pulls the knife out again.
"Ah, well, shucks." Niffty snaps.
"Hey, come on, we don’t know if things are over yet. Try to relax, Husker. It’ll be okay!" Alastor reassured.
At the Happy Hotel
The three open the door. Husk sat down on to the couch to look at his hands, his mind goes back to the war.
Niffty went to the fridge to get a beer. "It’s probably a good idea to get some actual food in this place. Y’know, to feed all the wayward souls ya got in here." Niffty laughed, but then it became nervous laughter, and then she just stops.
Alastor went out to talk to his boss. "Hey Boss. Um, I know I keep calling, and you must want that kale paid back. But um, the interview isn't sitting pretty and... I don’t know if I’m going to make a difference. I don’t know what I’m doing. I could really use some advice, Boss. I think you're right about me. A-anyway, I’ll stop talking before this gets long." Alastor went back in.
A knock to the tune of Come On Eileen was on the door.
Alastor opens the door to see Charlie in her demon form.
"Hell-"
Alastor slams the door, and then open it again to see if he just saw that.
-o."
Alastor slams the door again. "Hey Husker?
"What?!" Husk asked.
"The Musical Demon is at the door!" Alastor nervously answered.
"Holy shit what?!" Husk drops the knife.
"Uh, who?" Niffty asked
"What should I do?" Alastor asked.
"Well, don’t let that bitch in!" Husk shouted
Alastor slowly opens the door.
"May I speak now?" Charlie asked.
"You may-" Alastor said.
"Charlie, pleasure to be meeting you, sweetheart, quite a pleasure. Excuse my visit, but I saw your riot on news and I just couldn’t resist. What a performance! Why, I haven’t been that entertained since the Great White show of 2003. Ah so many bodies." Charlie introduced
"Stop right there!" Husk pointed a M16 at Charlie. "I know your game. And I’m not gonna let you hurt anyone here, you spunky, quirky, musical harlot!" Husk threatened.
Charlie laughs slightly, "Hon, if I wanted to hurt anyone here... I would have done so already...." spooky demonic stuff pops up and then goes away. "No, I’m here because I want to help!"
"Say what now?" Alastor asked.
"Help!" Charlie exclaimed.
"Um, you want to help?" Alastor asked.
"With this ridiculous thing you’re trying to do! This hotel! I want to help you run it." Charlie exclaimed.
"Uh… why?" Alastor asked.
Charlie laughs, "Why does anyone do anything? Sheer, absolute boredom! I’ve lacked inspiration for decades! My work became mundane, lacking focus, aimless! I’ve come to crave a new form of entertainment!"
"Does getting into a fist fight with a upstage reporter count as entertainment?" Alastor asked.
Charlie laughs, "Absolutely, it's reality. After all, the world is a stage! And the stage is a world of entertainment!"
"So, does this mean that you think it’s possible to rehabilitate a demon?" Alastor asked.
Charlie laughs, "Ha no. That’s wacky nonsense! Redemption, oh the non-existent humanity! Nononono, I don’t think there’s anything left that could save such loathsome sinners! The chance given was the life they lived before; the punishment is this! There is no undoing what is done!"
"So then, why do you want to help me if you don’t believe in my cause?" Alastor asked.
"Consider it an investment in ongoing entertainment for myself! I want to watch the scum of the world struggle to climb up the hill of betterment! Only to repeatedly trip and tumble down to the fiery pit of failure." Charlie stated.
"Right?" Alastor nervously asked.
"Yes indeedy! I see big things coming your way, and who better to help than I…" Charlie exclaimed.
With Husk and Niffty.
"Ah, so uh, what’s the deal with Smiles over there?" Niffty asked.
"Wait, you’ve never heard of her before? You’ve been here longer than me!" Husk shouted.
"Only for a decade." Niffty replied.
"The Musical Demon, one of the most powerful fuckers Hell has ever seen?" Husk stated.
"Eh, not big on politics." Niffty answered.
"Some fuckin' time ago, Charlie was let out of Lucifer's castle she rampaged the fuck out of everything and then she started podcasting her carnage through fucking songs people started calling her, the music demon.. That kind of raw power had never been harnessed by a mortal soul before. Strange song and dense numbers would play on the radio paired with terrifying screams and cries for help. She'd force victims to join in and those who wouldn't or couldn't got the worst of it. Sinners started calling her the Musical Demon. (How fucking original!) Many have speculated what unimaginable force enabled her to rival our world’s most ancient and destructive evils. But one thing’s for sure: She’s an unpredictable source of danger, a wicked spirit of mystery, and a violent monster of chaos the likes of which we can’t risk getting involved with unless we want to end up erased." Husk annoyingly exclaims.
"Bash ears much?" Niffty silently laughs, "She looks like a cinnamon roll princess!"
"Well, I don’t trust her!" Husk spat.
"To be fair, do you trust anyone?" Niffty asked. "Anyone."
Husk went to Alastor.
"Al, man, listen to me. You can’t believe this girl! She isn’t just a happy face! She’s a dealmaker, pure evil! She's Lucifer's daughter! She can’t be redeemed! And is most likely looking for a way to destroy everything we’re trying to do. And we don't want that." Husk stated.
"I know she’s bad, and I know she probably doesn’t wanna change, but the whole point of this is to give people a chance! To have faith things will be better! How can I turn someone away? I can’t. It goes against everything I’m trying to do. Everything I believe in. I would be like them back then. Just trust me. I can take care of myself." Alastor stated.
"Alastor, whatever you do, do not make a deal with him!" Shouted.
"Don’t worry, I picked up one thing from them. “Ya don’t take shit from rich folk!” Okay, so… Charlotte. You’re sketchy, and you clearly see what I’m trying to do here is a joke. But I don’t. I think everyone deserves a chance to prove they can be better. So, I’m taking your offer to help. On the condition that there be no tricks or voodoo strings attached." Alastor nervously said.
"So it’s a deal then?" Charlie asked.
Alastor takes a gulp before he shakes her burning hot hands. Her hand burns Alastor's hand like a hot stove. Alastor cries in pain.
Charlie let go of Alastor hand and went to Husk.
Alastor went to the fridge to get something to cool his hand.
"Smile, my boy! You know you’re never fully dressed without one!" Charlie stated. "So where is your hotel staff?" She asked.
"Uh, well…" Alastor points to Husk and Niffty with his good hand.
Husk growls.
"Oh ho ho ho, you’re going to need more than that." Charlie stated.
"And what can you do you quirky cutie?" Charlie asked Niffty.
"I can finger you to heaven." Niffty replied.
"Maybe not..." Charlie said.
"Your loss." Niffty stated.
"Well this just won’t do! I suppose I can cash in a few favors to liven things up!" Charlie snaps, which cleans the fireplace and light up a fire in it. Charlie then pulled out a tall and dark demon from the fireplace. Charlie then shake it a little to get rid of the soot which reveals our white and pink Spider Boi Angel Dust.
"This tall friend is Angel!" Charlie said.
"Hello, my name is angel, it been along time since I saw any guy... IS ANYONE HERE GAY!? sorry, that was rude... OH MY! this place is disgusting, it really need the fabulous touch, which is weird cause I'm sure at least one of you is gay..." Angel went all around the room with his 6 arms cleaning and remodeling everything.
Charlie snaps again.
A gray female demon was at a bar talking to a male demon, "Okay that will be $50 for a hand- wohhhhhh" All kinds of demonic shit goes around Vaggie "¿Que demonios?" Vaggie notices Charlie, "YOU!"
"Veggie sweat heart glad you could make it!" Charlie exclaims and then hugs
"Don't you veggie me! I was working!" Vaggie pushed Charlie away.
"Good to see you to!" Charlie laughed
"What do you want?" Vaggie asked.
"Well sweaty I'm doing some charity work and I took it upon my self to volunteer your Service!" Charlie answered.
"Are you joking!?" Vaggie asked.
"No, I don't think so! I thought you could be the new face of this fine establishment!" Charlie points to a pole. "With your fine smile and "past experience" this job was made for you!" Charlie stated.
"IM AINT DOING NO CHAIRTY WORK DO I LOOK LIKE SOME KIND OF A FUCKING JOKE!?" Vaggie shouted.
"Maybe, but don't worry,I can make it more rewarding, if you wish." Charlie projects all of the cute good times they had back then.
"What!? you can think you can buy me with a wink and some good memories!? Well you can!" Vaggie got up to the stage
"Hey hey, heyheyhey! NO! No pole dancing we're meant to be a place that discourages sin! Not some kind of… casino, brothel, man-cave-" Husk ranted.
Niffty jumps on Husk. "Shut up! Shut! Up! We are keeping this." Niffty pointed to Vaggie. "Hey." Niffty flirted to Vaggie
"¡Vete a la mierda!" Vaggie said.
"Sounds sexy." Niffty flirted.
Alastor went up the the stage, "Hello there my scantily dressed friend! Welcome to this fine or at least with your help soon to be fine hotel!" Alastor introduced himself.
"I lost the ability to love years ago, so unless you got cash you're not worth my time." Vaggie stated.
"So, what do you think?" Charlie asked.
"This is the Bees Knees!" Alastor bellowed.
"It’s… fine." Husk stated.
Charlie went in for a hug with Alastor and Husk, "This is going to be very fun!" Charlie clears her throat and push Husk away.

I’ve got more than one membership to more than one club
A Michael POV fic in which he contemplates his bisexuality. Moments of Miluca, mentions of Malex, discussions of Michael/OC, because I personally hold onto the headcanon that Michael has been with men other than Alex.
I wanted to explore Michael’s relationship to his bisexuality, because I think it’s so interesting. He acts in ways that show he’s not too concerned about hiding it (i.e. the reunion scene, the drive-in, not caring about Isobel catching him), yet it’s not something he talks about openly (as indicated by Isobel’s “flimsy little closet” remark in 1x13). This fic was my attempt to work through that a little. I initially started this during Michael Guerin week, but abandoned it because I wasn’t sure if I liked it. I came back to it recently and am still not sure, but decided to post it anyways. Thanks to @jumbled-nonsense for encouragement and editing!
***
The first two months he’s with Maria are chaotic. With Max’s death, Rosa’s resurrection, Liz’s grief, and Isobel’s rage, there’s hardly time to breathe. Maybe that’s why, despite Maria’s assertion that they needed to talk after their kiss in the Wild Pony, they just...never did. She talked to Alex. Michael was able to ascertain that fact when he drunkenly spat the news at Alex one night and Alex’s only response had been an icy and flat “I’m well aware”, as he continued the task of putting Michael to bed, rather than let him stay passed out in a chair outside the Airstream after another bender. Michael never understood how Alex could compartmentalize like that. He felt a hundred swirling chaotic emotions around Alex, but not one of them was ever apathy. The fact that Alex could shut down his emotions, rather than yell or bring out the pyrotechnics, just made it starkly obvious that the intensity he felt for Alex had never been matched. If Alex had started dating someone, he’s not sure he would’ve managed polite disinterest with flat eyes like Alex is evidently going with since he learned about Michael and Maria.
So Maria had talked to Alex about Michael, but for some reason she hadn’t talked to Michael about Alex. At first, his breath caught every time there was a lengthy pause before Maria started a sentence, thinking this might be the moment. He wasn’t exactly relishing the idea of a conversation, and honestly had no earthly idea what he’d say. That day in the Crashdown he’d barely been able to choke out the words “it’s over, it’s been over” and that was before everything at Caulfield and the day after. Then, he had been driven by a singular need to seek something that felt normal and easy, but in the weeks since he’s struggled to get the echoes of “but you are mine!” “I shouldn’t have left you behind” and “you’re a miserable liar” out of his head. He hasn’t had the emotional wherewithal to figure out how he feels about all of that, much less to try to explain their entire history to Maria.
Every day she didn’t bring it up had felt like a reprieve initially, but now that it’s been two months, and there have already been several times when the three of them have had to interact, it’s starting to feel… unsettling. Some days he feels like just talking about it would be better. He’s never really had the opportunity to tell anyone on his own terms, and he hates not knowing exactly what Maria (or Kyle or Liz) even knows about him and Alex and what has gone on between them. He’s pretty sure Maria doesn’t have all the details, and it’s starting to feel like...lying somehow? Like another secret. And god Michael had been sick of secrets for a long time.
He considered bringing up the subject himself, but the opportunity never seemed to present itself. Maria doesn’t ever say Alex’s name if she can avoid it and changed the subject the few times Michael mentioned him in passing. He’d considered that Maria might just have an aversion to discussing exes too early in the relationship, but since last week when Maria was bored at work, she made up a drinking game where Michael had to do a shot when she correctly guessed the name of a previous conquest of his in the Wild Pony and vice versa, that explanation seems unlikely. The game was fun, and he’d laughed genuinely for the first time since Max died, so had decided once again not to ruin the mood by bringing up Alex.
Today, exhausted after another day spent in the lab with Liz trying to work out a cure for Max, he went straight to the Wild Pony, hoping for a few hours reprieve from alien nonsense. As usual, Maria seemed to sense what he needed as soon as she saw his face, and suggested they play another round of the game. Michael had smirked, and pointed to a guy he clocked on the way in that he recalled seeing Maria making out with under the bleachers their senior year of high school. She tipped a glass in his direction before downing a shot and perusing the bar for someone she thought might’ve been his type. They continued playing throughout the night, Maria threatening to cut him off when he teased her by intentionally choosing a few guys that she’d never touch with a ten foot pole.
It’s fun, light, and simple, just like it always is with Maria, yet some unease niggles in the back of his mind. He doesn’t realize what it is until he catches sight of Antonio at one of the back tables with a few friends. They exchange nods when their eyes meet, but neither makes a move towards the other. They haven’t spoken more than a few words to each other since Foster’s Ranch was bought out by the Air Force, and all the ranch hands, Michael and Antonio included, were suddenly out of a job. Michael had gone back to work at Sanders, and heard that Antonio and a bunch of the other guys had found work at another ranch nearby. Despite the fact that Michael and Antonio had hooked up off and on for about six months, neither had tried to continue things once it stopped being convenient. Michael had been wrapped up in Alex coming back to town, and by the way Antonio’s gaze lingers on the guy sitting next to him, Michael guesses Antonio hasn’t spent the last year pining after Michael. It had been fun though, and as Michael smiles to himself a bit at thinking of some of the more creative excuses they’d used to sneak off from the other guys on breaks, it suddenly hits him what’s been bothering him all night.
Between tonight and last week when she first came up with the game, Maria has made a dozen or more guesses about past conquests of his. Some right (she has the advantage of having watched him pick up girls in this very bar over the past 10 years), some very wrong (seriously Tess Harding? She might be hot, but she’d used to have a thing for Max and that was a complete no-go in Michael’s book), but every single guess had been a woman, even tonight when more than half their guesses had been jokes or wild conjecture.
Roswell isn’t exactly a gay Mecca but there were a handful of openly gay and bi locals who frequented the Pony, plus even more discrete ones. Over the past 10 years Michael has hooked up with his fair share of them and though he hasn’t exactly broadcast it especially since most were one-offs, he also never cared much if people found out. Now that he scans the room he spots another guy he hooked up with a handful of times, as well as the English teacher from Roswell High who Michael never had a thing with, but who is openly gay and known to the whole town after some nasty graffiti was sprayed on his car a few years ago. It caused a bit of a stir at the time, so there’s no way that Maria, who even without her nebulous psychic powers, has her finger on the pulse of this town better than anyone, didn’t know he was gay. Besides, once, shortly after Alex came back to town, he eavesdropped on a conversation where Maria was subtly pointing out the men she thought were queer, encouraging Alex to have a little fun. He’d been irrationally jealous at the thought, particularly when he realized that she was right about 3 of the 4 guys she’d pointed out. It had inspired a text message that had the intended effect of both making Alex blush and leave the bar to head to Michael’s Airstream before Maria could execute any actual matchmaking. So, her lack of guessing any male conquests definitely isn’t the result of not having a clue of what guys in Roswell might find Michael worth getting on their knees for (or vice versa).
The rest of the night Maria was too busy to play any more rounds of the game, which was just as well as Michael is so out of sorts he’s sure she’d have been able to perceive that something was wrong. He tries to tell himself it doesn’t matter. The game was supposed to be a bit of stupid fun, but it still rankles him. He switches to water until closing, trying to get a handle on his feelings. Once everyone is gone, and Maria’s counting the till, the words escape him before he’s even made a conscious decision to utter them.
“You missed at least one tonight.” He hopes it comes off casual, but there’s a bit of an unintended edge to his words and he’s still not really sure why.
Maria seems to sense it, as she stops counting and swivels on her stool to face him. “Oh yeah?” She studies his face thoughtfully for a minute and Michael thinks she might be trying to get a read on him. Maybe the fact that he’s so unsure of his own feelings blocks her ability to get anything from him, because she looks confused as she asks tentatively, “Are you gonna tell me who, or do you want to see if I get it next time?” She seems to understand this isn’t a lighthearted continuance of the game.
Michael swallows hard. It feels like coming out somehow, even though she obviously knows about Alex, so knows he’s bisexual, but he’s still nervous. “Antonio. You know him? He was sitting in the booth on the left in the back.”
Michael sees the stark shock on Maria’s face even as she quickly covers it. “Antonio? Who works out at Atkins Ranch? Sure I know him. Comes in lately with a guy I’m pretty sure is his boyfriend.” Maria really does know everyone, and clearly Antonio’s sexual orientation hadn’t escaped her notice. Yet she still seems shocked to hear that he and Michael have history. She’s clearly uncomfortable now, avoiding his gaze.
He still doesn’t entirely get where the discomfort is coming from so he pushes on. “Yeah, I think he is at Atkins Ranch now, but we used to work at Foster’s Ranch together. We spent six months finding ways to slip off together on our breaks last year.” Shock flashes across Maria’s face again, even though that description is tamer than the ones he gave of his brief relationships with women she correctly identified, so it’s definitely not discomfort in discussing exes, just this particular ex (and Alex, his subconscious helpfully adds). It doesn’t take a genius to identify the commonalities there, though it is confusing. Maria clearly does not have a problem with queer people. Alex is one of her best friends, and he’d seen a ‘Love is Love’ rainbow sign in the bar window the last few Junes. Homophobia doesn’t make sense, but there’s no denying that she’s surprised and a little uneasy with him discussing being with men in the past.
He could let it go. That’s what he’s done the few times the subject came up with Max or Isobel. When Max insisted that he would have known Michael was bisexual if only Michael talked with him, Michael said nothing instead of shouting back that if Max had asked how Michael was after Alex went to war, they’d have talked about it. Maybe they would’ve. Fuck, he doesn’t know. They were both so messed up then, blinded by guilt, heartbreak, anger and resentment. He’d have been just as likely to shut Max down with a snarl and toss him across the room, but he’s annoyed Max never asked nonetheless. Michael had told Isobel something once. But he was so drunk and out of it, he doesn’t know exactly what he said. She tried to bring it up exactly one time before this year, and when he shut it down she looked almost relieved. He’s pretty sure it wasn’t a discomfort with him being bisexual, but a discomfort with love itself, especially the messy, complicated kind that would do nothing to help Michael blend into Roswell society. So in ten years, he’s had about three conversations outside of Alex or hookups in which his bisexuality was even acknowledged. He never thought he cared, but clearly he does because he can’t seem to let this go.
“So, why were all your guesses women, then?”
“I’ve watched you operate for 10 years in my bar, Guerin. And you always picked up women, so I thought I’d hedge my bets.” Maria aims for flippant, but doesn’t quite manage it. There’s something else there and Michael just can’t stop poking at it.
“Sure, I don’t openly proposition men in the Wild Pony, since if the goal is to get laid I don’t want to be distracted by having to clock Wyatt Long in the face first, but you know I’m bisexual, wouldn’t you assume that sometime in the last 10 years I might’ve hooked up with some of Roswell’s other queer residents?”
She looks down and is silent for so long, Michael’s not sure she’s going to respond. “I didn’t, actually.” She replies quietly. After a deep steadying breath, (unbidden, an image of Alex taking that same slow, deep inhale before saying he shouldn’t have left Michael behind, flashes through his mind). He shakes his head, trying to focus on the here and now as Maria continues. “Know that you were bisexual, I mean. I didn’t actually know that.”
“What the fuck do you mean you didn’t know?” Michael bites out, sharper and louder than intended. He softens his tone a little. “I might not know how you know, but you telling me nothing could happen between us because Alex and I had history is kind of burned into my memory.”
“I knew you and Alex kissed in high school, yeah. But that’s all I knew for sure. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re bisexual! And in ten years I’ve never seen you with a guy. Hell, Rosa and I used to make out in high school. Doesn’t make me bisexual!” She’s talking rapidly now, hands moving through the air like they do when she’s agitated, though he notices her brow furrowing a bit on the last words, and wonders if maybe she’s reconsidering just how bisexual it might make her. Ultimately he tucks that away for another day; he’d never tell someone else how to define their sexuality and it’s so not the point now. He’s more focused on the first words she said. That he and Alex kissed in high school.
He lets out a hollow laugh. As though it had ever been that simple. It was though, that simple, for a glorious half hour there in the museum. When it was nothing but the two of them, Michael’s nervous energy, Alex’s quiet surety, pressed together, gripping faces, hips, backs, anything they could touch. It was simple, pure, and wonderful, but so damn fleeting.
“That’s what he told you? That we kissed in high school? And you were gonna cut things off with us because of what you thought was one awkward high school fumble? And you never brought it up? You said we had to talk about it and then you never mentioned it at all? Are you really that uncomfortable with the idea of bisexuality that you can’t even have a conversation about what you thought was one kiss in high school and couldn’t even fathom that it might’ve been more than that? That maybe my sexual past might’ve included men and women? I never pegged you as uncomfortable with bisexuality, Maria.” He knows he’s stepped in it the minute he finished talking, but it’s too late.
“He didn’t tell me jackshit actually.” Maria’s voice is cold as ice now. He’s managed to avoid having a lot of relationship fights by generally eschewing relationships, but he and Alex have enough practice with them despite never having been officially together that he sure as hell recognizes a bad one as it’s starting. Apparently that conversation he was dreading is happening right the fuck now and he has no one to blame but himself. If only he could rewind time to five minutes ago and keep his damn mouth shut.
“Once in high school he was moony eyed over some guy and told me they’d kissed in the museum. I tried to get more out of him, but he was tight lipped about it like he always is, and I could feel that it was more than a stupid crush for him. He didn’t ever intentionally tell me it was you, but he couldn’t hide the fucking gutted look on his face when he came into the bar after you told him about our hookup in Texas. I’m sure you’d recognize it because it’s the only look he wears around us now, before he can hide it under his mask of cold indifference. And ok, maybe I did think it was just an awkward high school fumble and experiment to you. But I knew for him it was more than that and that it would probably be pretty shitty of me to try something with you. And hey, guess what? It fucking was. But I was so tired of denying myself what I want, when there are so many other things in my life are so damn depressing, so I did it anyways. Because a lot of times you make me feel good, cared for, happy even. Even when everything else goes to shit. And I wanted to hold onto that.”
Maria swipes at her face as a few tears well up, but her voice doesn’t waver as she continues. “You’re not the only one that sometimes uses this relationship to avoid a painful reality, ok Guerin? You don’t hold a fucking monopoly on it. So yeah, excuse me if I wasn’t relishing the opportunity to have a conversation about your history with my best friend so I could drown myself in guilt. I feel it every fucking day as it is. I guess I made some assumptions, but maybe it was easier to think it was a one time experiment for you back then, and not ask questions that might disabuse me of that notion, so I didn’t have to think too hard about what you meant to each other. And it’s not like you were exactly rushing to fill in the blanks, so don’t put this all on me. The single solitary thing you said to me about Alex was that it has “been over” and that I shouldn’t feel guilty. And in the entire time I’ve known you, you’ve never so much as mentioned that you found a guy attractive, so given those facts and that my guilt kicks into overdrive thinking about you and Alex together, I think the assumptions I made are kind of understandable, so miss me with this biphobic shit.”
Michael is stunned into silence for a moment. Maria told him once that he wasn’t exactly the arbiter of friendship, and she was right. He’s never really had friends. Max and Isobel were family even if sometimes he’d try to deny it. Maria had almost been a friend, but it veered off into a hookup and then dating, or whatever it was they were doing now, before they had moved past comfortable acquaintances. If he really thinks about it, Liz is his only actual friend and that had only been the past few months, so he has never been well versed in the rules of friendships. He hadn’t completely understood Maria’s initial refusal to sleep with him again because her friend had history, as she’d put it, with him. And since she’d later reconsidered, he hadn’t given it much thought, but evidently it really is affecting her and he feels bad that he’s been too wrapped up in his own conflicting feelings every time they were in the same room with Alex that he hadn’t really noticed the way she’d tense up and shut down after those encounters. He knows he’s been overwhelmed by his own shit, and is guilty at times of using their relationship as a reprieve of sorts. It shouldn’t come as a shock that she’s doing the same, and hasn’t brought up Alex because she too was trying to pretend that their relationship could be one easy and uncomplicated thing.
He knows picking this fight is unfair. None of this is her fault. Now that the immediacy of Max’s death, Noah’s death, and Rosa’s resurrection has passed, he’s had space to think about Alex, and he’s so fucking confused. That night Max died, he thought things were so clear. He felt certain he needed to leave the past behind and move forward with Maria, but now everything is muddled again. He’s tried to ignore it, and focus on the good things in his relationship with Maria, and not think about how Alex said he doesn’t look away. But his subconscious obviously hasn’t let it go and maybe that’s part of why he pushed today and got so annoyed with Maria for assuming all his exes were women. But also, maybe he does want some validation of his sexuality. He’s never had to think much about it because he’s barely ever been in a relationship, but now that he is in a relationship, and it is with a woman, it feels important to him that his sexuality is acknowledged at least by the people close to him. It’s odd because he’s never felt like walking in a pride parade, but everyone assuming he’s heterosexual just...it feels wrong somehow. But Maria is his girlfriend, not his therapist and she shouldn’t have to deal with his anger and irritation when he doesn’t even understand it himself.
He looks up at her intending to apologize and feign temporary insanity, but when he meets her eyes he sees her gaze has softened and she’s looking at him thoughtfully, with a hint of sadness. She speaks quietly before he has a chance to. “I am sorry for making assumptions. You’re right, I shouldn’t have. I hope you know that you being bisexual is not a problem for me, Guerin. That you’ve had more exes that are men than I thought is not an issue at all.”
The words are pacifying, but there’s something she’s not saying. “I’m sensing a but in there, DeLuca.”
She smiles tiredly at him. “But...I think it’s clear that we do actually have to talk about Alex. Obviously it’s on both our minds and ignoring it isn’t gonna cut it anymore.”
He knows she’s right, knows he was annoyed not five minutes ago that they hadn’t had this conversation yet, but suddenly he’s terrified. He can’t help the sinking suspicion that having that conversation will result in the end of this. Not just their burgeoning relationship, but a friendship too, and he’s so tired of losing people. He looks at her pleadingly. “I’m sorry too, I shouldn’t have snapped at you. And yeah, we probably should talk, but does it have to be tonight?”
She smiles softly at him, in the way that always makes his heart stutter in his chest, and takes pity on him. “No, it doesn’t have to be tonight.”
She wraps an arm around him, tugs his head onto her shoulder and presses a kiss into his hair. He closes his eyes, enjoying her closeness and wills himself to stay in the present, in this moment, with her. Tries to make himself believe that this thing they’re doing can work. Tries to make himself believe that this doesn’t feel like goodbye. It almost works.

“I love you. More than a thousand stars in the sky... And even more than the hundreds of galaxies far and wide.” Liam smiled as he cradled his wife’s body against his, careful of not squeezing her tightly. His hand gently rubbed her tummy, the warmth emanating from the thin piece of clothing sent tingles to his skin. A few more months and a little version of them would be running around the Duchy, bringing bubbly brightness for everyone.
“I love you too, Liam. As long as you’re willing to have me... To have us in your life.” Riley answered then tilted her head slightly up and planted a small, saccharine kiss on his lips.
“Not ever in this lifetime that I would never want you, Riley. For as long as I breathe, it’s going to be only you. No one else.” Liam answered and gently combed his wife’s hair, lulling her to a peaceful slumber.
Everything was perfect.
He is married to the only woman he could ever want in his entire lifetime.
They’re expecting a child and Cordonia is at a prosperous peace.
All important people from his life are gathered together in one place.
Life couldn’t be more giving than it is now.
There was nothing more than he could ever wish for.
A soft series of knocks roused him from his slumber as he gently rolled to the side of the bed only to flutter his eyes open in surprise and find the space beside him empty. Disorientation took over Liam’s bearing while he blinked several times, finding himself doused with more questions than answers.
The rap on the door didn’t stop and it became frantic each second that passed. He let his eyes adjust to the dark room first before he moved to flick the bedside lamp on – and a dimmed light shied away a portion of darkness. Then he realized... he was not familiar of the place. However, somehow, somewhere in his memory, he was certain he’d already seen it. What more, his wife is nowhere to be seen and it looked like he’s not in Cordonia either. He studied the corners of the room only to find a small flaglet of the United States erected on one of the flower vases.
Liam was very sure that he was indeed with Riley. He slept with her cuddled beside him. In Cordonia. In valtoria. In their bedroom. He played with her hair. Her voice was still fresh in his mind. Her laughter. Her touch. Her smell. But the unfamiliar place held no clue of any other person aside himself.
Could he have been kidnapped? Panic rushed in his system but it quickly died down. This was almost too elaborate of a plan. How can someone transport him from one country to another in just one night?
With this information at hand, he moved towards the doorway, pulling the knob open only to reveal Drake and Maxwell outside with worry etched across their faces. Liam released the sigh he didn’t realize he was holding in since earlier.
“Liam! There you are! You weren’t answering and God forbid, we thought something bad might have happened!” Maxwell’s agitation-to-relief babbling echoed throughout the hallway. Drake’s eyebrows shot up in question and motioned for them to enter before Maxwell wakes the entire floor. He stared at him for a moment, trying to read anything amiss before a slight look of worry took over.
“Liam...” Drake drawled softly with a shrug. He released a small sigh as he cocked his head to side, eyes carefully watching the other. “Mind if we barge in?”
Liam sidestepped to let the two men enter. He moved to close the door behind him, sweat visibly trickling down his face despite the room’s air-conditioning. He took a few seconds to compose himself, breathing in and out to calm his nerves. But the moment his gaze directed upwards, his vision was greeted by weirdly floating-in-the-air empty rectangle-shaped bars above the heads of Drake and Maxwell.
“What… in the world…?” He gaped, both expressions of welter and marvel moulding in his features. His finger froze midair, pointing towards the empty space just above their heads. Maxwell furrowed his brows then he looked up and followed Liam’s trail. When he didn’t find anything, he deadpanned, clearly astounded at the sudden odd attitude he was exhibiting.
“Huh? Is there something on my hair? Do I look weird? Tell me I don’t look weird...” Maxwell panicked.
“That... thing on your head –” But before he could even speak another word, the floating thing slowly faded to the background. It was as if... it just blended in out of nowhere.
“You alright?” Drake queried with extreme concern. Liam ran a hand over his face repeatedly as if he was trying to wake himself from a mad dream. He blinked several times, shot another swift glance towards the space above, then nodded for assurance when he didn’t see the thing again.
“Alright, this is really unusual.” Maxwell chimed. “You didn’t even drink that much champagne last night yeeeet you’re acting like a drunk right now.”
“I…” Liam paused, unable to determine if it was wise to bring up the weird bars he saw on top of his friends’ heads. It was transparent… and a small heart(?) symbol was placed inside. By the looks of it, he’d say it was like some sort of a measuring bar... but for what?
He paced towards the bedside table, fishing his phone from the top drawer. For a moment, he considered telling them what he saw... but debated at the last minute. It was not something he understood himself. And with Maxwell’s reaction, it’s likely he’s the only one who can see it.
How could he explain something that nobody else could see? Something that disappeared without much of a trace? It’s always best to know first what it’s about before staking any wild claims on what it might be.
He clutched his phone closely before he turned to meet the others’ gazes. Liam squared his shoulders and quipped, “My apologies for that. I must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.” He cleared his throat before offering a small smile, “Have any of you seen Lady Riley by any chance?”
Drake and Maxwell exchanged a funny look upon Liam’s question. They were silent for a while, unsure how to answer him. It was as if they didn’t recognize the name. Or even the person he’s talking about.
“Riley?” Drake was the first to respond. There was not a single hint of recognition visible across his features. “What now, you’re randomly dropping names of people?”
Liam was stunned to silence. It was as if several unknown fears started to surface like tidal waves. It felt as if air had been knocked out of his chest, constricting him from properly breathing. It’s like... all the weird points finally started to add up.
An unfamiliar place that seemed familiar...
No traces of Riley anywhere...
Waking up alone...
Drake and Maxwell...
“What on earth is this all about... Is this a practical joke? Tell me it is.” He was able to choke out the words but his voice was undoubtedly shaking. Drake staring back blankly only heightened his fears.
“What are you talking about?” Drake answered. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
They looked at him like he was uttering nonsense to them...
It was as if...they never met her at all.
“Alright, please, if you may drop the acts now. It’s early morning for you to be cracking jokes.” Liam’s voice fell to a soft hush, as if the only one he’s trying to convince was himself. He pressed on, swallowing hard, eyes pleading towards Drake.
“Huh? It’s already 6 in the evening! You slept in the entire day, that’s why we came to fetch you!” Maxwell supplied.
“Who is this Riley you’re talking about?” Drake added.
Oh dear god.
“It’s Riley… your friend. My… my wife… Riley.” A sharp pause. “Drake—she was with me last night… I… I’m fairly certain I went to sleep beside her…” He fumbled his words only to catch himself mumbling like a fool.
Drake only stared harder.
Maxwell shook his head, clearly amused at Liam’s ‘supposedly’ incoherent claims. It was as if he’d grown a third head overnight and was a spectacular view to look at. Or as if he was still drunk when he was certain he didn’t even have a single drop of alcoholic beverage on his system before going to bed.
When Maxwell took notice of how lost and desperate Liam looked, he raised his hands in defense and said, “Okay, hold on... What are you talking about? You didn’t sleep with anyone last night, Liam. And obviously there’s no ‘Riley’ here!”
“No. No, it can’t be... Whatever do you mean that there’s no Riley here?” His brows furrowed in sheer frustration. Unable to believe, refusing to believe what he was being told, he immediately opened his phone to dial Riley’s phone number in hopes to show them that he's telling the truth and to call them out from whatever prank they were trying to pull.
But before he can even click to unlock, he stopped dead on his tracks as the date glared at him through the screen.
He gaped at the device and then turned to give a look of horror at his companions. “What… I can’t believe this…”
“Okay. Stop right there. You’re acting really strange right now.” Drake walked over and gently tapped Liam’s shoulder. The gesture caused the other to break free from his trance as a wild look flashed across his orbs. For a moment, Drake looked taken aback at how ashen Liam became.
“What date is it today? Where are we?” He needed to know. He needed to hear. He needed confirmation. Liam’s voice started to shake and for the first time in his entire life, he looked hopelessly helpless and powerless. Maxwell began to worry at the sudden crumbling of Liam’s walls, as if there was a giant wrecking ball that got through and broke him down to pieces.
Drake sounded surprised before he answered, “Huh? I’m not sure why you wanna know again when you just looked at your phone... but it’s your Bachelor Party. We’re in New York City.”
Liam visibly deflated, his body wobbling before his knees gave in, causing him to slump on the floor with a thud.
The device on his hand vibrated and a reminder flashed on the screen,
‘Last Day in New York. Make it count.’

Hi can I request a matchup?? I’m a 5’0 bi girl (preference for girls but guys are also cool!) i have short, dark hair and big brown eyes, and I never leave the house without trying to dress fashionably. I’m super bubbly and social, sometimes reckless and wild, I’m intellectually smart but a huge dumbass, and can’t help myself from smiling. I’m also depressed and hella self conscious so that’s fun! I like art, writing poetry and short stories, and theatre. Thank you so much!
Hi this took forever I am SO sorry. My ass Do be depressed and slow, and my brain said ‘haha writer juices EMPTY. WHORE’ so this definitely had me stumped
#1 is...Neijre!
Now I’m probably gonna key in on the reckless and wild part here
Because y’all met at a party probably!!
Now we all know that Neijre is popular.
Blunt but popular.
So one day y’all are at someone’s ‘my parent’s aren’t home and I’m pretty sure that if I replace the vodka with water they won’t notice’ party.
It’s going great!!
People are wasted and Lady Gaga is blasting and the friend you came with ran off with a Ketsubutsu student
You’re kind of tipsy
Tipsy enough that you don’t have the cognition to think through decisions
So you’re standing next to this blue-haired cutie who you’re pretty sure you’ve seen before
When someone bursts through the front door, screaming bloody murder about the police
Naturally, they have everyone’s attention when an officer that definitely already called the paddy wagon
So someone from the upstairs balcony hollers ‘scatter!!’ and you grab the hand of the first person you saw
Which was the blue-haired girl!
And she seems surprised but she runs with it (literally)!!
You two go upstairs, almost cornered, before hopping out a window
You two are falling when she uses her quirk and helps your landing
And then y’all make tracks for the fence line.
By the time you two have ditched the house, it’s almost midnight
And you guys are wandering around town
The blue-haired girl’s heels are hanging off of one hand
And the silence is filled with babbling between the two
A gas station is the decided pit stop before you two part ways
And you walk in to get some waters
As you two sit on the curb, watching idiot light cigarettes and try to peel out of the station, she glances over
There’s something magnetic about you
And she can’t quite pin what
But you’re always smiling
And it’s the opposite of getting on her nerves
She wants to see it again and again
She’s staring at her drink, thinking, before you present her with a handful of chicory flowers
She realises that you must have picked them from the side of the road
She’s bright red because, with all of her social expertise, she doesn’t even know your name.
She doesn’t know if you’re into girls, if you’re trying to ask her out, if you’re just being nice…
She takes them, and before y’all know it, you’re both leaning in
And as she takes the flowers from your hands, you two kiss
Someone mumbles from one of the pumps that it’s just turned midnight
Out of nowhere
Your phone goes off
And that’s when you jump out of the kiss, and your face falls into a mix of shame, fear, and sheepishness.
‘Sorry,’ you murmur. ‘This is my friend, she was at the party. I probably have to go. Are you going to be alright?’
Neijre can only mutely nod, still awestruck
You begin to walk away, your friend audibly hollering at you from the other end of the line about bail
You look back every couple steps or so to make sure that Neijre is okay before you turn and walk out of sight
And this begins something for Neijre that makes her hold her hands in her cheeks with a bright red blush
The problem rises the next morning though
When she wakes up in her bed with a headache, she realises that she has no literal idea who you were
So when she goes to class (because real thugs party on weekdays) she’s hugging the chicory flowers to herself
She tells her story to Mirio
Who tells it to Midoriya
Who tells it to Ochako
Who tells it to Aoyama
Who tells it to-yeah, you get the idea
So by lunch, the entire school is talking about Neijre’s Cinderella story, and about her kiss at midnight
And what do you know?
You hear it in your friend group from 1-D that Neijre got into a cop chase with a dashing stranger who she made out with on a bridge before being cruelly dumped
And you’re just like ‘?????’ before asking where to find Neijre.
They answer but don’t put two and two together that maybe you were the dashing stranger
So later that day you go to the road to pick more chicories and add some speedwells in there, before going to hunt down Neijre.
You’re standing at the entrance of school the next morning
And it’s FAR too early for this
But that’s what love does
But anyway
You’re standing there
With the flowers in hand
And you stand there
And stand some more
And you’re standing there for two hours
And you’re contemplating just bailing and finding her another time
When you hear the loudest gasp
You look up
And she’s standing there, hands covering her mouth and her eyes wide
‘N-No way! It’s you!!’
She looks positively elated, and before you can do anything more
She leaps forward and kisses you smack on the lips
Sure people are staring
But she just covers you in kisses, grinning giddily the entire time.
She seriously had doubted that you would appear, ever again
And that midnight would seem like a summer dream
Mirio would have to usher Tamaki with him inside because of how long it takes for you two to part
It becomes the Cinderella story of U.A.
#2 is...Tooru!
Listen
This may be sad/punny
But you make her feel seen
You always make her feel involved
She understands that because of her quirk there is a bit of an obstacle in trying to involve her
So whenever you look over and ask her opinion
She feels really giddy!!
It makes her blush, and for once, she feels grateful for the invisibility; you can’t see her light up like a Christmas tree.
She daydreams about you a lot, and to be honest, it’s always really domestic.
Yes, she may be a cuddle bug, but she wants to go grocery shopping with you and complain about how expensive milk has become
And sometimes her daydreams will evolve into actual scenarios, including arguments.
Every time it shifts, she gets kinda spooked and semi-avoids you for about an hour afterwards
The first time you guys really interacted was at the Sports Festival, during the race
She was lagging a little bit behind because her quirk doesn’t really help
So at one point, she gets tripped up (she has her uniform on, remember!)
And she’s pretty sure that he knee is scraped
But then this sweet little lady stops and notices Tooru holding her knee for a second.
Tooru’s confused when the young woman looks around, before placing a hand over the wound.
Tooru’s about to freak out before realising that the wound is gone, but instead, it’s on your knee now
You give her a thumbs up and carry on, limping a bit now
She can her Present Mic talking about it loudly, but she’s too busy getting back up and running to pay attention
She makes it into the top ten (if I remember right) so after you congratulate her!
With a high five!!
She’s really giggly throughout the entire encounter and tries to subtly ask if you’re single
Note that subtly is not really subtle
So you have an invisible cutie coming for your kneecaps!!
To kiss them better!!
After you two begin to chat more
And she invites you to a lot of the extra 1-A outings!
All the girls are super supportive of it and do their best to make some sort of shoujo situation out of it.
If it rains then conveniently Tooru left her umbrella at the dorms!! Oh no!!
Oh? Ochako has an extra that’s big enough to cover the entire class?
Well then!! You and Tooru have to share
(bakugou also forgot his umbrella, but as much as he complained to everyone else, he didn’t say a word to you and Tooru)
The boys (like Bakugou) are a bit less wing-man-y, but they certainly are rooting for you!
If Tooru wants to know your favourite colour, then chances are, Midoriya’s got it in his brain somewhere.
If she needs help cooking your favourite meal, then Bakugou will bitch and whine while making sure she measures flour properly.
And if she’s going on her first date? You bet your ass that Aoyama will be there, styling her.
So when they see you two kiss for the first time (Tooru wore lipstick to make it easier to aim) everyone went ballistic.
‘Fucking finally!’
‘Go Tooru-chan!!’
‘Congrats, kero.’
#3 is...Todoroki!
j
Jealous boy
He wants to be popular
He noticed you after the sports festival (of course)
And sees that you’re a little social butterfly.
He wants what you have
You have all these people that flock to you for friendships, and you’re always smiling and goofing off
And yet you have fantastic grades
So with a determined huff, he decides
He’s gonna ask you to coach him in being a young socialite.
So when he approaches you he feels really daunted
You’ve got this crowd of people around you (in his eyes)
And he thinks that you wouldn’t even notice him, probably
However he forgets
He is a half white half red angsty bastard who everyone saw and instantly parted like the red sea for
So all you guys see is him glaring down at you
And you’re like ‘😰 whoop guess this is where i die”
Someone’s asking if they can be in your will when Todoroki starts talking
‘You’re loud. And friendly.’
Everyone’s expecting him to blast you to the moon for being loud
When he goes into a ninety-degree bow
‘Please teach me, sensei.’
Everyone’s like the pic i sent you of Bibble
It’s just AWESTRUCK
And you’re like ‘ohh, you don’t wanna kill me? Dope!’
And that’s where his lessons begin
You start off with telling him that his resting face made him look either constipated or pissed
So he starts working on making sure that people know he has no ill intent
And slowly but surely
People approach him with invitations to parties for he himself to go to, not as a Todoroki, but as Shoto
And he’s absolutely ecstatic
He thanks you endlessly
But naturally this leads to something or the other for him
Because you gave him the chance he needed to be a teenager, for once
And gradually he realises
That’s he’s gotten a crush on you
Now
He’s a bit afraid, because he’s not had any good role models in terms of love
And baby boy doesn’t want to lose your friendship and trust if it doesn’t turn out
He does get jealous
But doesn’t say anything
He just stares
And at one point, after a cute Support student tried panning over their number, you notice todoroki staring at the ground, looking angry
You go up to him
‘Hey, are you okay? You look kinda upset.’
His head snaps up and he’s blinking down at you
And he just feels really conflicted
Because he assumed that it would be better if you just remained as friends for right now
And that the best route would be just to keep you in his heart
But when you look at him like that, he snaps
‘May i talk to you in private?’
‘Sure. Is everything alright?’ You’ve got a nervous smile on your face as he drags you outside
And once out there he just spills his heart out
‘I understand that you and I are friends, and you are one of my closest friends. However, I’ve found myself feeling...different around you. I want to hug you, and ward off anyone that tries talking to you with romantic interest. When I first met you, I was jealous that you were so popular and kind, and that everyone loved you for who you were. But as you showed me more and more about how to be normal, I started getting jealous of everyone else, that they could be-’
And he goes on this speil and the entire time he is this 🤏 close to crying
And he starts talking about his mother and how he’s scared he’s gonna end up the same way if he dates you
You don’t want to cut him off
But he’s going on and on and on pouring out his emotions
So when he takes a second to catch his breath, you pop in
‘I’m glad you’re talking to me, but I like you too. Hopefully, you’ll stop stressing a bit.’
And todoroki short circuits.
He takes a second
Blinks
And then blinks again
Before smothering you in a hug as he lets a tear or two fall onto your shoulder
And you two stand there for definitely longer than you should’ve
Present Mic actually comes looking for you two because classes started again
And from behind Todoroki’s back, you give Present Mic a thumbs up before gesturing to your other hand rubbing his back and then his gently crying
Present Mic gives a big ol grin before turning a corner, waiting for you two to be done
(you’re lucky it was present mic, or else you two would’ve been physically ripped apart)

New Year’s Eve: Chapter Four
Read it all on AO3 or previous ch. 1, 2, 3
One magical night, five intertwining love stories, all culminating at midnight with just maybe some confessions and kisses as the clock strikes.
This chapter: The next two chapters very much go hand in hand, this time we find Maia, who’s very much in love with girlfriend Clary and very much thinking about marrying her in the very near future, helping her spiraling boss Maryse track down the man who’s quite possibly the great love of her life. Problem is she let him slip away without even learning his name last New Year’s Eve.
***
4 P.M., New Year’s Eve
Maryse Trueblood is not a woman to live with regret. She’s sacrificed a lot in her life to get where she is, she’s done it for this publishing company she proudly heads into the future, for her children and for herself. Every mistake has been a learning experience, every misstep a trial to overcome and give her extra strength to push forward. She doesn’t regret. Hell, she doesn’t even regret the years she wasted on Robert, because those lead to this company and her four beautiful, successful children.
She’s felt regret twice, last New Year’s Day and right now, in this moment with four passes to a New Year’s Eve party that a messenger just dropped off. Because it’s four passes she doesn’t know what to do with, two of her children will be there working more than partying, the other two are somewhat hesitantly spending the holiday with their father and that leaves Maryse all alone. And she can’t help but think if she’d just given her name and number to the handsome possible man of her dreams she met last year she’d have someone to spend the evening with.
She has friends, even after the divorce and some of them choosing to follow Robert’s money instead of her, but most of them have children and partners of their own to spend the evening with. It feels a lot like last year except with no work to occupy her for most of the night she’s so much more poignantly aware of it just being her.
She paces the floor of her office in a bit of a hurried panic thinking about the prior New Year’s Eve. The divorce had finally after almost four damn years of heated court battles gone through and she’d worked herself to the bone to ignore the New Year ready to put the messy divorce and the baggage with it firmly behind her. She’d ended up in a random diner after strolling around the city and then quite literally stumbled into a tall handsome man with the widest smile she’d ever seen.
They’d talked quiet and honest for hours about silly things, but also about their kids, the stranger being a single parent as well, but for much longer than she had, before Max had called asking Maryse to come get him from his dads after a major argument broke out. She’d rushed away leaving the handsome stranger who she’d had an inexplicable connection to behind without so much as her name, let alone a way to contact her.
She hadn’t regretted the choice all year, even if she found her mind wander occasionally to warm brown eyes and an unfairly attractive trimmed beard. It hadn’t just been a rush of forgetfulness in some ways not telling the stranger how to find her had been purposeful.
While she and Robert hadn’t been together for years, and the divorce had just been a final seal on a thing that had been no more than an image of happiness for the public eye for damn near a decade, she still inexplicably felt like it was too soon. Robert may have moved on before the word divorce was even thrown into the ring, but Maryse wasn’t ready, or she convinced herself she wasn’t, convinced herself that she had to think about Max first, about the idea of introducing a new man into his life first, he may be nearly eighteen, but he’s still her baby and always her priority.
Of course all that slipped away the next morning when she’d casually mentioned the idea of her dating and her youngest had simply shrugged, “Dad’s a dick, you deserve someone who makes you happy.” He’d said it so easy, with a rare kiss to her cheek and Maryse felt that first twinge of regret, realizing that she may have left the someone who could make her happy alone in a diner with no way of finding her.
And now she’s feeling it again. Her pacing increases her mind racing with ways that she might be able to track down her mystery man, she only knows bare facts, she’s not nearly as technically savvy as she should be and frankly describing him would probably get her nowhere and just make her sound like a lovesick teenager. She’s so in her head she doesn’t even hear her office door open her assistant popping her head in and freezing on the spot when she notices Maryse’s state.
***
Maia packs the last of her things into her backpack ready to head out for the evening. She’s already changed into her glittery dress and dark red tights for the evening’s semi-formal couch surfing plans. She sends a quick text to her girlfriend, Clary, letting her know that she’s about to head out. It’s their second New Year’s together, this time around spending it with Clary’s lovely, welcoming father and Maia can’t help but hope for a lifetime full of New Year’s Eve’s with the gorgeous redhead. Forever and Clary are two words she’s very, very recently been stringing together and she can’t say any part of it sounds bad, a lifetime with Clary Garroway sounds like a dream come true.
She lets out a no doubt dreamy sigh at the thought, smiling brightly as Clary’s response comes through with just a string of varying colored hearts intermingled with x’s and o’s. Her girlfriend is just the cutest person in the world.
She lifts her bag heading to her boss’s glass door the blinds shut. She knocks quietly earning no response, but figuring it’s safe to head in anyways. Despite her formidable appearance, Maryse Trueblood, formerly Lightwood, is actually an incredibly kind woman to work for, she has a fierce, terrifying side, but it’s only saved for those who would question her authority, particularly since she left her husband and took full control of Lightwood Publishing. She’s easily the best boss Maia’s ever had; she likes her so much she didn’t even mind coming in today for a few hours.
She pokes her head in and freezes when she sees Maryse pacing the floor at a concerningly rapid pace. Maryse is a lot of things frazzled which is how she looks now, is not one of those things.
“Maryse,” she says calmly which stops Maryse’s pacing abruptly. She swivels to face Maia as she enters the office fully, shutting the door behind her. “Are you alright?”
Maryse shakes her head way too quickly, “Of course,” she says putting on an epically fake smile. It’s the one Maia’s seen her sport many a times in meetings with ignorant authors or overpaid agents with egos. “You should head out, wouldn’t want to steal anymore of your holiday.”
Maia knows she should go, should take the opportunity to head out, but she looks at Maryse and just can’t leave the woman whose kind of become a pseudo mother figure alone in this state that she’s poorly attempting to conceal.
“You know, whatever it is that’s bothering you,” Maia starts off.
“Nothing’s bothering me,” Maryse interjects, but Maia keeps going. Most bosses would find it insolent, but Maryse has always appreciated and found Maia’s bluntness refreshing telling her often it reminds her of her own children.
“I’m sure I can fix it,” she continues on. “You didn’t get me that world’s best assistant mug for nothing.” She adds on cheekily thinking of the brightly colored mug in the shades of the bi pride flag sitting on her desk that Maryse had gotten her for Christmas last year, she’d also given Maia a $5,000 dollar bonus, but somehow the mug had meant so much more. It was an acceptance and appreciation of her.
Maryse smiles at that, a real smile.
“It’s nothing for you to worry about, world’s best assistant,” she says warmly.
Maia just shrugs, “I’m gonna worry about you whether I stay and you tell me or I go. No one should be left alone pacing in their office on New Year’s Eve without at least a chance to vent.”
Maia’s stubborn too, another thing her boss has always seemed to appreciate.
And then at that it’s like the dam breaks. Maryse lets out a fond, annoyed huff and then she’s spilling it all out in a ramble, which is a thing Maia’s never heard Maryse do. She’s telling her about a mystery man who could just be her ideal match she’d met last year that she’d never told anyone about, about the regret she’s feeling and how it’s all just sort of hit her in the last twenty minutes since she received passes to one of the hottest parties in the world.
Eventually she runs out of steam and Maia finds herself asking the dumbest question she could out of all the things she just heard.
“If you don’t mind me asking, how did you even get passes to the Edom Records New Year’s party?” Maia asks and sort of wants to put the words back in her mouth immediately.
“My almost son-in-law or future son-in-law if he and my son who’s actually catering the event never manage to get their head’s out their asses sent them to me,” Maryse says with a genuine smile seeming to not mind, before divulging back into her pacing. “My daughter is actually performing backup tonight as well.” She adds as forethought like she suddenly remembers the fact as her pacing picks up speed.
For a moment Maia considers going, forcing her boss to the party to see her children and just heading out to the evening she’s been looking forward to, but something in her makes her want to stay. Whether it’s a loyalty to Maryse and or the romantic inside of her that has her saying her next words she’s not sure, but she knows she won’t regret them.
“Maybe I can help you track him down tonight,” she says and Maryse stops pacing again.
“Oh no,” she says stepping to Maia placing her hands on her shoulders in a warm motherly gesture. “I don’t want to ruin your evening on some wild goose chase. There’s no way we’d ever find him, but thank you.”
“I’m a millennial with way too much social media knowledge, you could know he likes turtles and has eyes and there’s a chance I could track him down,” she says with confidence which makes Maryse laugh. “And if all else fails we go over to that diner and maybe he’s there waiting for you to show up.”
Maryse looks skeptical which Maia finds insane. There’s no way Maryse didn’t leave an impact as strongly on her mystery man as he left on her. She’s a gorgeous, well-dressed force of nature with an unexpected wit and softness to her, she bets the guys been pining all year long.
“I don’t know, you’re off the clock and your girlfriend is waiting I can’t ask that of you,” Maryse says dropping her arms.
“You’re not asking,” Maia says standing her ground, refusing to back down on this. “I’m offering, off the clock.”
Maryse lets out a breath eyeing Maia in a stare down that she refuses to break. Eventually Maryse cracks and Maia feels a tiny burst of pride that she’s won this one.
“Fine,” she says as Maia happily claps her hands together dropping her backpack to the floor and already moving to the door to head to her desk and log on to every social media platform she knows. “But,” Maryse says as she follows behind her. “You get these tickets as a payment, take your girlfriend to a free fancy party.”
“I don’t need you to pay me for this,” Maia says as she logs back on to her computer.
Maryse rolls her eyes leaning against Maia’s desk, “Then consider it a thank you and not a payment.”
Maia concedes, knowing that while she won the first battle, Maryse will always win the war especially if Maia tries to turn down those tickets.
“Okay, but you’re keeping one for yourself, just in case.”
Maryse rolls her eyes again but accepts the compromise as Maia begins rattling off a list of questions about Maryse’s mystery man intent to find him somewhere out there. She texts Clary telling her she has some emergency work that might keep her longer than originally planned, assuring that she’ll be there to kiss her at midnight guaranteed.
***
Maryse watches with fondness and a little bit of awe in the way Maia understands how to manage every social media platform so well as she lists off question after question about any tidbit Maryse can provide her with about the man she met that night.
She sends the last straggling messenger in the building to an address Maia gives her with two of the tickets for her girlfriend and girlfriend’s father. She smiles as Maia reads a message on her phone likely from her girlfriend with a lovesick smile on her lips. Oh, to be young and in love. She hopes for Maia’s sake that this young love is a lasting one. She can see how happy Maia’s been in the past year and some change since she met Clary.
She’s grown quite fond of her assistant of three years, has come to think of her as another child in a lot of ways especially since she learned of Maia’s strained relationships with her own parents. She wants only good things for her, and that’s a growing feeling as she watches Maia delay her plans just to try and help Maryse even a little bit.
She answers Maia’s questions easily as her fingers fly over the keyboard logging in to social media sites Maryse has never even heard of. While she hadn’t meant to spill her guts out in a rush to her assistant she finds it nice to finally talk about the encounter and the man who’s not strayed far from her thoughts all year. The inexplicable connection that formed so quickly and the way he seemed just as stunned by how easily they’d connected.
She tells Maia everything she can recall, from his little life tidbits like his profession in the NYPD, which she doesn’t know exactly the nature of, to his appearance:
“Tall, African American with a gorgeous smile and great arms,” she says making Maia waggle her eyebrows.
She even tosses in little things she noticed, quirks and silly things they discussed that didn’t matter, but make up a person as a whole.
“He takes his coffee black, said he loves horror movies with clowns and judging from the four slices he ate in our brief time together I’d say key lime pie is his favorite,” she says and this time Maia gives her a fond, sappy look that has Maryse turning her head with a blush.
Maia scours the internet for almost three hours finding a plethora of men who match some of the aspects, but narrowing it down to a little over half a dozen who hold a few more than the others. Eventually Facebook leads her to three men who match right down to very specific posts about their love for key lime pie, but none of their images match the mystery man Maryse knows or wants to know even better.
Maia let’s out a sigh glancing at the clock in the corner of her screen. Maryse is about to tell her it’s a lost cause, tell her to just go to the party and have a nice night, but Maia has other ideas suddenly standing up from her chair, phone in hand.
“What’d you say the name of the diner was?”
“Rey’s, with an e instead of an a,” Maryse says. “Why?”
“Well,” she starts typing away on her phone likely looking for an address. “It’s nearly nine, and even with the holiday traffic we can probably make it across town by ten or so which is roughly around the time you met last year, so hopefully he’s smittenly waiting around since he’s clearly not spending his time on the internet.”
“Maia,” Maryse starts ready to oppose.
“We’re going,” Maia says as she throws on her coat with a pointed look that reminds Maryse so much of the ones her own children have been throwing in her direction for years when they won’t let something go.
And just like she does so often with her children. Maryse relents.
“If all else fails you’re coming to the party with me, Clary’s dad is an attractive, single dude and I’m sure he’d live up to your mister mystery man,” Maia muses as she grabs her wallet and keys from the desk leaving her backpack behind and pulling Maryse’s coat down from the rack by the door.
She stands behind her practically forcing the coat on, which if Maia were almost anyone else Maryse would be deeply annoyed by the action, before linking their arms together and pulling Maryse out the door and into the chilly cheerful night atmosphere with a smile filled with hope. It gives Maryse hope that maybe, just maybe Maia’s right and her mystery man will be there waiting.
***
When Maia’s phone tells them they have arrived at their destination Maryse’s heart drops into her stomach. Because right there where a small, slightly tacky diner sat just one year ago is an empty sectioned off lot.
The diner is gone and with it her mystery man.
Maia twirls around, mumbling to herself that this can’t be right. That they must have gotten the address wrong or Maryse misremembered the name of the diner.
Maryse reaches out stopping Maia’s twirling and angry typing into her GPS.
“No, this is it,” she says, the words coming out sadder than she had intended. She recalls the little bookstore next door and the bakery with the bright pink awning across the street. It’s all still here, just like it was last year. Everything except the diner.
“What kind of business doesn’t put up a notice online that they’re no longer open,” Maia says frustratedly gesturing wildly at the empty space. “Or that they’re no longer even a building!” she yells actually catching the attention of a few passerby’s that she simply waves off with a growl.
“Probably the kind that were never very good at that sort of thing in the first place which lead them to going out of business,” Maryse says with a sad smile. She stands there dejectedly looking at the rubble that’s left behind and all that hope that Maia’s bright smile had given just slips away.
***
As Maryse dejectedly sighs at the remnants of the building Maia looks around, just hoping to spot some handsome mystery man waiting around that vaguely fits Maryse’s description, but there’s just the bustle of New Year’s partiers, no stillness, no romantic reunions on the horizon. She does however spot a flash of red hair at a distance that for a brief moment she thinks might be Clary but shoves away the possibility as she feels Maryse move beside. Her attention switches to her boss as she moves to sit down on the curb, head hung low.
She settles beside her on the curb, people shuffling around them and just barely bypassing where they sit. They sit there quietly for a while, nearly an hour, Maia uncertain of what to say.
“Here,” Maryse says eventually reaching into her inside jacket pocket. She pulls out the two remaining party passes and holds them out for Maia to take. “You should go, have fun with your girl, don’t waste your whole night away.”
Maia shakes her head pushing Maryse’s hand with the passes down gently, “I can’t just leave you out here. What if he shows up here looking for you too?”
Maryse smiles at her kindly, “I don’t think so.”
“I mean you said the connection felt mutual so maybe,” Maia starts unwilling to let Maryse just give up like this. She’s never been a big romantic in the past, but Clary has made her one and listening to the way Maryse talked about her mystery man she can’t just let her quit now.
“It’s okay,” Maryse says reaching out a hand to hold Maia’s cheek gently in a tender motherly way. “If fate wants me to find him again then I’ll find him, just not tonight. So, go have fun, dance the rest of your night away and kiss your girlfriend at midnight. Don’t sit on a dirty sidewalk with your boss.”
Her hand drops holding out the two passes again, this time Maia takes them.
“Fine, but you’re coming with me,” Maia says still stubbornly refusing to leave her boss behind. Maryse is quick to shake her head, but Maia persists. “There’s two here passes, plenty for you to come along. Just because you didn’t find Mr. Right tonight doesn’t mean you have to spend New Year’s Eve on a dirty sidewalk alone.”
Maryse smiles at her softly standing up from the curb dusting off the back of her dress before holding out a hand to help Maia up.
“Let’s go then, we already missed a no doubt incredible dinner done by my son,” she says as Maia takes her hand rising from the curb to join her. “Let’s not miss the free drinks too.”
Maia smiles, still feeling a little sad for Maryse, but happy she’s agreed to at least try and have some fun with what remains of the night. As she once again links her arm with Maryse’s she hopes against everything that Maryse is right, that fate can play a hand one day and she’ll find her mystery man even if it isn’t tonight.
***
The walk across town to the Edom records party is quiet. Maia is clearly giving her the space to talk if she wants but letting a comfortable silence wash over them if she doesn’t. She’s grateful for the gesture, it allows her mind to clear and to let the disappointment slide and instead grant her the serenity to feel content. To know that even if she didn’t find the man she’d shared a connection with last year, she’s ready to share a connection like that with someone again. And tonight she can just look forward to the New Year and its new possibilities. Take a bit of her daughters’ beautiful optimism about the holiday to heart.
It’s a long walk to the party, Maryse grateful for her comfortable shoes, but once they arrive they easily slip inside from the south entrance. It’s nearly eleven already, most of the night gone and done, a thing she hopes Maia doesn’t mind.
They enter the main hall through a side door avoiding a dessert delivery that the bouncer tells them might get in their way and Magnus is just closing out one last slow song. A song Maryse has heard a time or two and known exactly who it’s about. The music ends just as a waiter passes them with a tray of champagne that Maia immediately plucks two glasses from handing one to Maryse.
She tosses it back looking across the room and spotting her son bolting out of the door, a few moments pass and suddenly Magnus appears pushing his way through the crowd to seemingly chase after him, gaining everyone’s attention the way he always does. It’s always been one of her favorite things about Magnus, how all eyes are on him but in the time she’s known him his eyes were ever only on Alec.
She smiles hoping they work things out finally. The night may have not gone her way for romance, but she hopes it goes there’s. Maia also scans the room not watching the scene Maryse is, eventually tossing back her champagne as some DJ starts up a round of dance music to fill the space and she lights up with a smile as she points to a redhead in a pale pink dress on the dance floor.
“There’s my girl,” she says fondly. “Come on, let’s dance.” Maia grabs Maryse by the hand pulling her forward before she can protest. They near closer to Clary when she reaches out to someone, she pulls a man towards her his back now covering their view of the redhead.
The man spins her, a laugh that’s deep and rumbling carrying out over the music as they get close enough to hear.
“It’s just like when you were little, still a shrimp,” the man says and Maryse freezes. The voice so achingly familiar that she convinces herself it’s her mind playing tricks on her.
Maia raises an eyebrow turning to look at her when she stops dead in her tracks no doubt about to make some remark about not wanting to dance when the man and Clary turn so he’s facing their way. Then it’s his turn to freeze.
“It’s you,” he says and Maryse widens her eyes in disbelief. The familiarity of his voice not a trick of the mind as the face she’s been imagining for a year stands right before her.
“And it’s you,” she replies unsure of what to say. Maia is looking between them wide eyed seemingly having an internal freak out about this turn of events. What a small world it is that Maryse’s mystery man is she assumes Clary’s dad.
Maia’s likely berating herself for not putting together the pieces. It’s a thing Maryse will have to reassure her about later, but right now she needs to do something she hadn’t done a year ago.
She tosses back her glass of champagne sitting the empty glass on a passing waiter’s tray, the action makes the man chuckle that deep rumbling laugh again. She steps forward letting go of Maia as he does the same to Clary.
“I’m Maryse,” she says holding out a hand that he immediately takes in a soft, but firm hold. “Maryse Trueblood.”
He smiles, that big bright smile she remembers so clearly.
“Luke Garroway.”
***
Maia watches speechless and wide eyed as Maryse and Luke’s eyes meet. It takes her moment, but suddenly the penny drops.
Luke is Maryse’s mystery man. Maia frankly has never felt stupider. The signs and connections all seeming so clear as she watches Maryse hold out a hand and finally introduce herself. She shuffles to stand next to Clary both too transfixed and stunned by the picture before them to even greet one another.
Maryse’s mystery man worked for the NYPD, up until February of this year Luke had been a detective on the force. His description was apt, a picture of Luke should have come to mind as Maryse described her mystery man. The single parent thing, the daughter he adores, even the way he takes his coffee all those facts together without the pressure of social media mining to find an unknown man paint the image of the man she hopes to call her father-in-law someday soon. The key lime pie thing is the only part that doesn’t add up, Luke’s always been a cookie over all dessert’s kind of man, so she doesn’t know where that came from.
Of course it all makes sense now why they had no hits on the social media front, Luke notoriously hates all forms of the internet that dig into someone’s personal life.
“Um, what’s happening?” Clary says pulling Maia out of her thoughts.
“I believe your dad is my boss’s mystery dream man she met last New Year’s Eve,” Maia replies watching as Maryse and Luke shyly speak.
“The diner dame?” Clary exclaims turning to look at Maia who raises an eyebrow in question. “That’s what I’ve been calling her since dad told me about her.” Maia snickers. “It seemed cool at the time, whatever. He swore me to secrecy about it even though he’s been pining all year. I even made him swing by the diner earlier and we saw it was torn down.”
Maia hums, realizing that flash of red hair she spotted may not have been Clary, but Clary had been to the rubble that was Rey’s earlier.
“I wasn’t technically working, I just wanted to save Maryse the embarrassment if tonight didn’t work out. I was trying to help her find her mystery man,” Maia explains. “Which in hindsight probably should have been a lot easier than the research and literal across town searching we’ve been doing all evening.”
“What a small world,” Clary muses as she turns briefly back to them with a soft smile. Her dad’s happiness has always been such a priority for her. Maia hums in agreement pulling Clary’s hand and tilting her head indicating they leave the reunited pair to it.
Clary smiles stepping a few paces away and leaning into Maia to wrap her arms around her neck, Maia’s automatically landing on Clary’s waist.
“I didn’t realize you were such a romantic, helping your boss find true love,” Clary singsongs with a cheeky smile.
Maia rolls her eyes, “It’s entirely your fault. You made me this way.”
Clary snorts her nose scrunching up in that cute way it does sometimes and that Maia is impossibly in love with before leaning in to place a quick sweet kiss on Maia’s lips.
Maia tips their foreheads together sparing a quick glance to the side where Maryse and Luke have moved their way over to a vacant table both grinning from ear to ear. She moves her eyes back to Clary swaying to the music now playing not really dancing in time with it, but enjoying every second of it all the same. She’s so content and happy to have inadvertently helped her boss find her mystery man and warm in the arms of the woman she loves.

“It’s like a long drive… You just… keep your foot on the gas. For hundreds of miles, this country looks like the same thing. Nothing changes… But if you just… keep your foot on the gas… eventually, you’ll find yourself a thousand miles away… somewhere better than you’ve ever been. And you barely remember where you came from.”
Allison spent the entire night thinking. Part of her wanted to give up, go to Dr. Carlson’s office and ask him to get her out of Mona’s case. But the other part, that same part that enjoyed the adrenaline of being part of Mercy Park Crew, eight years ago, wanted to stay and see where that new wild road would take her…
Before leaving bed to get ready for work, her phone started buzzing. It was Griffin. He was unexpectedly assigned for a special charity work in Africa and wanted to see her for dinner, before his departure.
“It’s better this way,” Allison thought. “So he won’t notice the mess inside my head.”
After getting dressed, she headed downstairs. Her breakfast, as usual, was waiting for her. Dad though, was caught in a what seemed an important phone call.
“Another one?!” He asked. “I’ll be in the office as soon as possible. They’re definitely related…”
He hung up.
“Morning, dad. Working already?”
“Good morning, sweetheart,” he joined her at the table. “No, it’s just a new case… These college kids, losing their minds over… nevermind, let’s talk about your job. How is it been going?”
“Different from what I expected,” she took a sip of her coffee, trying to hide her discomfort.
“In a good or a bad way?”
“Hmmm… both.”
She told him about a few of the cases she had seen and other interns she met. As dad seemed happy and relaxed, she found a perfect opportunity to get into the subject she intended to.
“Yeah, I can’t believe I almost threw it all away for… Speaking of which, have you heard anything about them? MPC, I mean.”
Her question almost made her father choke with his coffee. His expression quickly changed.
“Why are you asking? I hope none of them contacted you, now you’re back in LA.”
“N-No,” Allison tried to calm him. “I was just wondering.”
“Good, because if any of them try to mess with your head again, I’ll make sure they’ll never leave jail in this lifetime.”
The mood between them became tense. Allison decided to leave earlier for work, but before, she grabbed something in her bedroom.
———-
Empty. Mona’s room was empty. A hint of disappointment appeared in Allison’s face. She had probably ran away like she always did, for multiple reasons, including the fact she was assigned as her doctor.
“This is it. She has completely moved on and maybe I should too.”
“Looking for me, Doc?” A known voice behind her made her freeze in place.
“Mona,” she turned around to face her. She was returning from a vending machine, bringing some candy. “Hey, you're not supposed to have any of these!”
Mona shrugged, sitting on the edge of the bed and opening a chocolate bar.
“Whatever, my body will be getting rid of it real soon,” her expression darkened.
“This is why you must go through this surgery as soon as possible. I spoke to my supervisor and the rest of the team, we’ve scheduled it for this evening.”
For the next minutes Allison explained her the procedure, the treatment and the post-op.
“What about the risks?” Mona wanted to know.
“The risks are minor. They’re definitely higher if you don’t treat it immediately. This lesion could become worse, compromising your liver functions and leading to hepatic failure.”
When she finished, Mona let out a little laugh.
“What’s funny?”
“Nothing, just seeing you talking in all these medical terms and acting professional. It’s kinda hot.”
Allison felt her cheeks burning.
“Mona!”
“Oh, I forgot about Mr. Diamond there,” she pointed to her engagement ring.
“It’s not…” Allison sighed. “There’s a thing called doctor-patient protocol.”
“I don’t usually follow protocols. Otherwise…” she pointed to the gunshot wound in her abdomen, “I wouldn’t be here, right after earning my freedom.”
“So, you’ve just left prison,” Allison sat on the armchair next to her bed.
“It has been two weeks. Going through a surgery is the last thing I expected to do. It’d be so unfair if I died now.”
“D-Don’t say that, okay? The risks are minor! It’s not a complex surgery.”
“Relax,” Mona grinned again. “I was only toying with you, Doc. I still intend to be around for a while. Especially now…”
She said the last two words staring directly into her eyes, what made Allison’s stomach flip. After a quiet moment, she broke the silence, wondering if she was about to do the right thing.
“I brought you something… to bring good luck,” from her pocket, she handed Mona the fuzzy dice she gave her, years ago. She looked surprised.
“You still have it.”
Allison nodded.
“You weren’t able to forget this face at all, were you?”
“How could…” her pager beeping interrupted what she was about to say. “I’m sorry, I must check another patient now. If I don’t see you again before your surgery, I just wanted you to know I wish you good luck.”
“Thank you, Allison,” Mona smiled. That smile Allison knew very well. “Anyways, in either case, I win. If I die, the last thing I’ve seen is your pretty face so…”
Allison let out a nervous laugh and shook her head. Before she left, Mona called her again, swaying the dice playfully between her fingers.
“Hey Doc, I’ve got a 6-6, it seems like I’m going to live after all.”
“I’m definitely hoping so.”
———-
"Allison?” Griffin’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “Is everything alright? You’ve barely touched your food.”
“Y-Yeah, I’m just…” Allison sighed. “My very first patient is having a surgery right now and I’m quite worried.”
He touched her hand in a comforting, reassuring manner.
“Hey, it’s like my father always says, you cannot allow yourself to get so attached. The less attached you get, sooner these feelings will go away.”
“I know, but I just can’t treat it like it’s nothing. It’s a life and it matters to me.”
“It’s only because it’s your first case. You’ll get used with time.”
“Or maybe I’m in the wrong career,” Allison thought, nervously checking her pager again.
They entered Griffin’s car, but instead of driving her home, he was driving somewhere else.
“Where are we going?”
“I prepared you a surprise. Maybe it can help you to relax a little.”
When he parked at the entrance of The Palmer hotel, she knew it not only wouldn’t relax her, but it’d make her more tense. That place brought her a lot of memories…
“You really want me, don’t you? I can tell.”
“Did you like it?” Griffin asked as he opened the door of the most luxurious suite. “We still haven’t had a chance of properly celebrating our engagement.”
From behind, he moved her hair aside, exposing her neck and planting soft kisses on her skin. It made her shiver, not like before, but in an uncomfortable manner. Just like when they started dating and she was still getting used to the idea he was her only and best option at the moment. When she was forcing herself to develop an affection for him, trying to sink what was left of those feelings Mona once called ’an illusion’, ’a blanket’.
“I wish you had consulted me first about this,” she took a step away from him.
“Come on, baby. You always liked surprises.”
She sat down at the bed, looking at her pager again. No news were a sign of good news. In case anything had gone wrong, her presence would be requested. Griffin approached, kissing her cheek as his hand caressed her tight.
“Look, Griff,” Allison took a deep breath. “I know you had planned a special night for us and that you’ll be out of the country for weeks, but… I’m not really in the mood. This is really consuming me right now. I’m so sorry.”
“Okay,” she noticed he had a little bit of frustration in his voice. “So let’s talk about this patient, if it’s going to make you feel better.”
“Uh, it’s a… woman. She has a lesion on her liver, from a previous gunshot wound that wasn’t properly treated.”
Griffin’s eyes widened a little in surprise.
“Wait, is it the ex-con my father was talking about? Her presence is causing a huge buzz at the hospital, the nurses keep gossiping she used to be part of a gang and she’s extremely dangerous. I can’t believe he assigned you to this case!”
“And I can’t honestly believe what I’m hearing…” she got up, headed to the window. “Extremely dangerous,” she shook her head in denial.
“Promise me you’ll be careful, just in case. If you want I can talk to my father, tell him you didn’t know…”
“Yes, I did know and it doesn’t change anything! About the ‘extremely dangerous’ part, it depends on how you see it. My father is a detective and I’ve seen people that are truly evil and never went to jail!”
She grabbed her purse and headed to the door.
“Allison, come on,” Griffin held her arm, trying to stop her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound nasty or anything, but that chick has a bad reputation.”
Allison opened her mouth in shock. She never expected that behavior from such a kind-hearted person as her fiancée.
“I couldn’t care less about her reputation, I care about her life. I’m going back to the hospital.”
“Stay here with me,” he embraced her. “Only for a few minutes. We can cuddle and talk about our future, like old times.”
“Our future. Of course.”
Resting her head on Griffin’s chest, while he spoke about his mission in Africa and the plans for their engagement party when he returned, Allison thought about her own future. Her apartment, her insecurities about her career and… Mona.
She remembered how Langston and being a doctor became her dream after her mother passed away. She wanted to go to the same University as her mom and make a difference saving lives. Unlike hers, that couldn’t be saved.
But… would her dreams have been the same, if her mom had survived that car crash?
———-
Wiping some tears from her face, she left the hospital’s chapel, where she said a prayer for Mona’s life and asked for guidance. She had just sat at the waiting room when a surgeon came to meet her.
“Dr. Wheeler?” He said. “Everything went as expected. The patient is recovering in her room.”
“Are you sure?” She wanted to know. “Because when she was shot, after the bullet was removed, she had internal bleeding in the middle of the night and nearly died. She spent two weeks in coma.”
“We’ll ask a nurse to monitor her closer.”
“I can do it myself.”
She didn’t want to go home anyways. She wouldn’t be able to sleep. After drinking a massive cup of coffee, she walked to Mona’s room. Though she was unconscious, her vitals were good and strong. Allison approached the bed, squeezing her hand softly. Noticing several new scars on her skin, she wondered what she had gone through during all those years.
She sat down at the armchair near the bed, monitoring her breathing and how she slowly started moving her hands and legs. Tired, she eventually drifted off.
Hours later, she woke up in a hurry, scared by the beeping sound of a monitor.
“Relax, gorgeous. It was the guy next door, it seems like things went bad for him.”
Hearing Mona’s drowsy and weak voice made her heartbeats return to normal. She took a deep breath, recomposing herself.
“Please, tell me you didn’t stay here all night.”
“N-No,” Allison lied. “I arrived earlier, to check another patient. I sat down here and fell asleep.”
“In my room?” Mona raised an eyebrow.
“Fine… I was worried, okay?” Allison finally admitted, as it was obvious Mona woke up before she did. “I was reading your chart, about your previous surgery and I was afraid to leave you unsupervised.”
“VIP treatment? I like it.”
Allison stood up and started to examine her and ask questions.
“How are you feeling?”
“Still high on meds, so I’m feeling nothing. I was having some nice dreams though,” she grinned broadly. “I was still a goody two-shoes teenager in Bronx, I got a crappy job on a fast-food restaurant to help my mom… my grades dropped, yet, I was such a nerd they granted me a full scholarship in Langston and then… I met you.”
Allison quite didn’t know what to say.
“It’s… uh, an interesting dream.”
“Do you wonder sometimes? How it could’ve been… if you had chosen a different path?”
“Sometimes,” Allison answered. “Right now, for example, I’m wondering if I picked the right career. I don’t feel I’m gonna be a good doctor.”
“You’ve just saved me.”
“No, I only diagnosed you. The surgeons did the rest, and you. You survived.”
They both laughed. Then Mona touched her hand.
“Man, instead of taking you to that stupid prom, I should have ran away with you.”
Their eyes locked for a moment. Allison didn’t pull away for a few seconds, enjoying the contact of Mona’s touch. Then, she sighed and cleared her throat.
“Doctor-patient protocol, remember?”
“Yeah… forget what I’ve just said, I’m high on meds anyways.”
She yawned, before closing her eyes and going back to sleep.
———-
The following days passed quickly, while Allison was busy most of the time, she’d often sneak into Mona’s room. She was showing good signs of recovery, being her usual self, complaining about the nurses and the hospital food. That morning, Allison received the news she was ready to be discharged.
“Morning, I’m bringing you the news you’ve been waiting for.”
“Am I finally be able to eat anything I want?”
“Uhhh no, but… your latest exams came just fine and you can go home, with some restrictions.”
“What kind of them?”
“You’ll need a lot of resting, no physical effort for a couple of months and you’ll need a special diet for a while. It’s all here in this paper.”
Mona read the instructions carefully before bursting into laughs.
“Yeah, I’m sure they’ll provide all of this in the streets and the shelter I sleep at night.”

Words: 2100+
[Read it on AO3] [DGHDA masterlist]
Martin’s whole body was in pain. Sweat poured down skin that felt too tight, skin then felt like it was being stretched beyond what should have been possible. His bones cracked, elongating, rearranging themselves.
He pushed himself. Run a little further, just a little bit further, he told himself. Still his lungs were screaming for air and his feet were on fire, trapped in shoes that were feeling too small. Martin collapsed in a clearing in the woods and began to tear off his clothes.
He kicked off his shoes, the left one’s sole had already torn off. His fingers, with nails that were getting longer and sharper by the second, fumbled to take the tie off from around his neck. His shirt tore and he ripped it off his body, a sense of momentary relief washing over him as he was free from the confines of the long sleeved, collared shirt.
Martin looked down at his pants then hesitated. He couldn’t take his pants off and be found naked in the woods! He could be arrested! A second, louder thought shouted over the first one; dear God take these pants off! Martin clawed at the belt around his waist, undoing it and tossing it into the growing pile of discarded clothes. He wrestled with his pants, gasping when his legs were finally free. He then looked down at his underwear, paused, then took those off too.
In the desperate race to get undressed, Martin’s black rimmed glasses had slipped off his face. He didn’t notice until he saw them on the ground. He saw them. For a good few decades of Martin’s life, he had been as blind as a bat — no, even more blind than a bat — without glasses. Yet the world was slowly coming into focus around him, even without them on, even as the fading light of day was replaced with black night.
He could hear his own heart racing, pounding in his chest. He heard his rapid breathing, heard the wind rustle the leaves around him, and worst of all, he could hear his body creak and tear at the seams.
A pained groan escaped his mouth, low and guttural, changing into something more of a growl. It hurt so badly. Never before had Martin felt this amount of pain. Not when his brother broke his nose, not when he had been hit in the ribs with a bat during baseball practice, hell not even in that crash that had taken his mother away from him.
Martin watched his body change. Thick, black hair grew everywhere, his skin becoming completely covered by it. No, it wasn’t hair. That was fur. His body stretched, rearranged itself into a shape that was barely recognizable as human. He spat out blood that had started to fill his mouth when sharp fangs protruded from his gums.
Martin watched as the fur enveloped the mark on his wrist. A tattoo, if you could call it that, of a moon. A full moon.
Martin was terrified. He was in pain.
He was hungry.
If you went back by just a day, you would have never guessed that Martin would be in this situation now.
Martin Priest, the quiet and proper desk clerk at the Perriman Grand Hotel, naked and rolling around in the forest in the middle of the night? Don’t be absurd.
Martin drummed his fingers on the desk and pushed his glasses further up his nose. He stared at his reflection in the polished countertop. He could use a shave. His boss didn’t think it was a good impression to have “a scruffy hooligan greet the guests.”
Work trudged on. The clock ticked. Elevators dinged. It could be worse, Martin thought. I could still be a bellhop. Martin definitely didn’t miss that dumb red hat. He had worked hard for this promotion.
Still this mundane work at the hotel was so incredibly boring, Martin wondered if it were really worth it. He hated wearing a tie, that thin and incredibly difficult to tie strip of fabric always felt too tight around his neck. The only jewelry that was permitted for men was wedding rings. Martin wasn’t married, hell he hadn’t dated in over a year.
His ex had told him he didn’t “live enough”. What the hell was that supposed to mean? Martin was alive, wasn’t that good enough? So the idea of a painful tattoo freaked him out, or the idea of dyeing his hair felt like too much of a commitment (“That shit is permanent!”). Martin just couldn’t handle that big of a leap into something crazy and long-lasting.
Part of him wanted to. Part of Martin yearned to do something fun with his dark, drab, hair. Maybe he could get a tattoo, a small and hidden one that his boss wouldn’t notice. Maybe he could go to more parties, try to get out of his shell. Maybe he could finally come out as bi. But still… he was afraid to.
Lost in his own head, Martin didn’t notice the woman until she had stormed right up to his desk. Slamming a manicured hand down onto the bell repeatedly, this blonde, soccer-mom looking woman had a look on her face somewhere between “unstoppable rage” and “I just ate a lemon”.
“Hello?! Hellooooo!!” the woman yelled.
Martin blinked, straightened his tie, and got ready to diffuse this ticking time bomb. “Pardon me ma’am,” he spoke, his southern accent a little out of place, his quiet voice only just audible. “How can I help you?”
“I want a refund,” she huffed.
“I’ll see what I can do, ma’am. Can I get your room number?” Martin asked.
The woman huffed as if Martin should know her room number just by looking at her. “201.”
Martin looked through the computer system before delivering a response. “I- I’m sorry, ma’am, but I can’t refund your room. You’ve been kicked out.”
“Well I want my money back!” yelled the woman, who the computer told Martin was Suzanne Boreton. “I paid to stay here and I’m being forced out before I should be, so I want my money back!”
“Ma’am, it doesn’t-”
“It was just a little weed!” Suzanne exclaimed. “Scottie had the window open the whole time!”
“Smoking of any kind is prohib-”
“It’s barely smoking. I want my money back, and an apology to my son!” Mrs. Boreton yelled. She was attracting the attention of other guests in the lobby now. Martin wished he could just hide behind his desk and the woman would disappear.
“I can’t do that, Mrs. Boreton. I’m sor-” Martin began.
“Oh you’re going to be sorry!” Suzanne cackled. Oh god, was she going to ask for his manager?
Instead, Suzanne drew a long, thin stick from her purse. It looked like a twig she had picked off the ground, or maybe even some kind of junk she had bought from a hipster-y, holistic-y, fake magic mumbo jumbo shop. She pointed it at Martin, who stood there not knowing what to do, and mumbled a few nonsense words. Nothing happened.
Then Martin’s arm began to burn. It was like a hot brand was being pressed on his skin on the inside of his wrist. He rolled up his shirt sleeve to look at it. His skin was bright red, but a black mark was beginning to form. A circle, slowly becoming more detailed. A full moon. Martin clutched his wrist with his other hand, gritting his teeth in pain. What the hell was going on? This was impossible!
“Martin? What’s going on here?”
Oh, crap. Martin pulled down his sleeve as his boss approached. “Sir, I-”
“Is everything okay here, ma’am?” Martin’s boss asked Mrs. Boreton.
“I was just leaving,” Suzanne huffed, sticking her nose up in the air. “You really should hire better employees.” And with that, she walked off.
“Martin, what was that?” Palacios asked.
“I- I-” Martin stammered, rubbing his aching wrist. “She got kicked out of her room but wanted a refund.”
“Well you didn’t have to make a scene!”
“I made a scene?” Martin asked. “She was-”
“Enough,” his boss cut him off. “What’s going on with your arm?”
“I don’t kn-”
“Is that a tattoo?”
Sure enough, part of the mark poked out from under Martin’s sleeve. “No, it-”
“Don’t lie to me, Priest, you know that tattoos aren’t allowed for employees. We’re running a respectable business, not a circus.”
“But-!”
“Pack up your things.”
“I’m fired?!” Martin exclaimed.
“You’ve caused enough trouble,” his boss said, nodding. “Pack up your things and leave. If you’re still here in an hour, I’ll have to get security to escort you out.”
Martin? Causing trouble? Martin, the quiet, sheepish, scared-of-his-own-shadow man, causing trouble?
Before he could argue, his boss walked off, leaving Martin with an hour to leave, no job, and an unnatural mark on his wrist.
When Martin woke up, he couldn’t remember the events of the night. He remembered changing, but nothing after that. His body was human again, but not the same as before. A little taller, a little hairier too. His senses felt amplified, hell he could see without his glasses!
Still his head throbbed and his mouth tasted funny, like the world’s weirdest hangover. Martin licked his lips, trying to determine the strange taste. Metallic… blood. What had happened? Whose blood was that? Martin had a sinking feeling it wasn’t his own.
“HI, THERE!”
Martin jumped at the voice then scrambled to cover his naked body.
“Here,” said another voice. A bearded man stood before Martin, a small group behind him. He held out a neatly folded pile of slightly torn clothes, a pair of black rimmed glasses sitting on top. “These are yours, right?”
Martin nodded, then took them. “Thank you… can you uh...” The group turned around as Martin put on what remained of his clothes. “Thanks,” he muttered, letting them know it was safe to look back again.
“I’m Vogel!” the energetic first voice said. A younger man with wild, partially shaved hair stood next to the first man. He gestured to the one who handed Martin his clothes. “That’s Gripps, that’s Cross, and that’s Drummer!”
Vogel gestured to two others. Another man, presumably Cross, who had shaggy hair and a circle tattoo around his eye. Drummer was a woman with sunglasses, holding a black parasol.
They all wore clothes of a similar style. Mostly black, probably second hand, and unmistakably… punk.
“I- I um…” Martin stammered. “I can explain?”
“First shift?” Cross asked.
“Recently bitten?” Gripps added.
“Yes, and um… no?” Martin answered. “I wasn’t bitten but-”
“Born?” Vogel asked.
“What?”
“Cursed!” Cross exclaimed. “You got the tattoo! Man, yours is so much cooler than mine!” He gestured to the circle around his eye.
“Are… are you all like me too?” Martin asked, bewildered by these strangers.
“Werewolves? Duh!” Gripps laughed. “Oh, apart from Drummer.”
Drummer flashed a smile, revealing long and sharp canines. “I’m usually asleep right now, but I wanted to stay up to say hi.”
“V-v-vampire?”
“No, I’m just really goth,” Drummer replied. “Yeah, vampire.”
“Vampires and werewolves are real?” Martin asked, already knowing the answer. Of course they were real.
“Yup! Welcome to the club!” Cross greeted. “I was cursed, like you, but Gripps was bitten. Vogel was born a werewolf, third generation. He’s the most experienced outta all of us.”
“Cursed… of course,” Martin mumbled. “That b… woman with the stick.”
Drummer laughed. “You can swear, dude.”
“That…. That damn bitch!” Martin exclaimed. God, that felt good. “That fuckin’ witch! She cursed me then got me fired! Fuck! Fuck fuck fuck!” The others laughed and cheered him on.
“What’s your name?” Drummer asked.
“Martin.”
“Well, Martin,” Gripps began. “We found you wandering around last night, howling your head off. You ate a rabbit then passed out.”
“First nights are rough,” Cross nodded. “But you get the hang of it and eventually start having fun!”
“I didn’t eat a person,” Martin sighed.
“Ewwww!” Vogel grimaced.
“We don’t eat people,” Gripps explained. “It’s a myth. Mostly just eat animals, or raw meat from the butcher’s. Or like… normal food. And beer.”
“Drummer gets blood bags from a friend, we don’t harm nobody,” Cross agreed. “Sometimes we get a bag for the full moon, like a treat.”
“TREAT?” Vogel asked, looking up. Drummer patted his head, promising a treat later.
“You wanna join?” Drummer asked. Martin nodded and she smiled. “Welcome to The Rowdy 3.”
“But there’s-”
“Martin, Martin, Martin,” Cross tutted. “Lotsa things won’t matter anymore.”
“Like math!” Vogel chimed in.
Gripps nodded. “Or jobs.”
“Or driving with your head inside the car,” Cross added.
“Rules,” said Gripps.
“Glasses,” Vogel said, nodding at the pair in Martin’s hand.
“But I liked my glasses…”
Drummer patted Martin’s shoulder. “We can get you a fake pair. Don’t worry. There’s a whole other world out there,” she told Martin. “It’s a lot of fun, trust us.”

Untitled Coffee-Shop AU?
“Did you just call me Magnus?”
A beautiful blonde sat across from Alec, now wearing a disgusted expression on his face. “Alec, what the fuck?”
“I…um…I…” Alec tried to cover for himself, but it was no use.
An unforgivable mistake had been made.
And it was all Magnus Bane’s fault.
Alec narrowed his eyes over at Magnus, who was dutifully pouring coffee behind the counter. He hadn’t even noticed Alec when he’d walked in with his date…
Or at least he was pretending not to notice.
Alec had specifically chosen the Witchlight Café on Main Street for his first date with Not Magnus. He’d known that Magnus would be on shift, since it was around 2PM in the afternoon. And in about an hour or so, Magnus was going to need a ride back to his apartment. Typically, that’d be Alec’s job, happily escorting Magnus all around the city—
Until Alec fucked the fuck up.
******************
They’d been hanging out in Magnus’ living room, lying side by side on his couch. Alec specifically remembered running his fingers through Magnus’ hair, as Magnus kept his head firmly rested against Alec’s chest.
Alec’s phone alarm had gone off for the umpteenth time, reminding him that he needed to start studying for his final exams. He’d been giddily procrastinating with Magnus Bane in his arms for hours, but if he didn’t leave the apartment soon, he’d end up pulling yet another all-nighter…
And it would be his third all-nighter in a row.
“Gotta’ go.” Alec had whispered the words into Magnus’ ear, before shifting away from him on the couch. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Don’t go.” Magnus shamelessly pouted, as he sat up in his seat. He rested his elbow against the couch fabric, while blowing out a heavy breath. “Stay.”
“Magnus, I need to study.” Alec offered him a smirk, as he bent to kiss Magnus’ forehead. “I’ll text you when I get home.”
“Studying’s for losers.” Magnus’ tone was playful, and he followed up his phrase with a conspicuous whine. “Who told you college was a good idea, anyway?”
“Yeah, well, we can’t all be baristas. Some of us need to be able to do more than brew a pot of coffee.” Alec joked back with Magnus, his face still set in a wide grin—
Before he noticed that Magnus’ frame had gone completely still.
“Magnus? What’s wrong?”
“That was a pretty fucked up thing to say, Lightwood.”
“What? What did I say?”
“We can’t all be baristas? Some of us need to be able to do more than brew a pot of coffee? Do you really think that’s all I do?” Magnus scoffed, as he stood away from the couch. “I actually have to work for a living, you know. Didn’t have the luxury of rich parents to pay my way through life.”
“Magnus, come on. That’s not what I meant. I was just kidding.” Alec moved to gently place his hands on Magnus’ waist. “I know that’s not all you do—”
“Do you think you’re smarter than me?”
“Yes.” Alec quickly answered Magnus’ question, without a second of hesitation. “But why does that matter? I like you, Magnus, just the way you are—”
“Aww.” Magnus gave Alec a faux smile, before he pushed Alec away from him, entirely. “Thank you for liking the dumb barista. You’re a real saint. A real genius.”
“Magnus—”
“You should go home. Gotta’ study for your finals, right? You don’t want to end up like me. You don’t want to end up a dumb barista.” Magnus brought his hands towards his cheeks, as he feigned a horrified expression.
“Magnus—”
“Go home, Lightwood.” Magnus dropped his horrified act, before emphatically pointing towards his front door. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“Baby…” Alec took a step towards Magnus—
But Magnus just rolled his eyes, as he headed off to his apartment’s kitchen.
*****************************
And that was the last time Magnus had actually said a word to Alec, whether in person or through text.
It’d been nearly a week since then, and Alec was getting antsy. He and Magnus had never solidified their relationship, with neither one of them bringing up the “boyfriend” label. Alec had just assumed that they’d naturally stop seeing other people, as they grew closer and closer to committing to each other—
Until he’d come into Witchlight last night for a quick drink, only to see Magnus openly flirting with a rather gorgeous brunette. The woman had wild, blue streaks in her waist-length hair, and her brown skin perfectly matched the gold jewelry that draped from her neck and ears. She was making Magnus brightly laugh at her every other word, and Alec could tell that it was Magnus’ real laugh, not just the one he put on for his customers. Alec could easily imagine them as an immensely happy couple. He had visions of them tightly holding hands as they left the coffee-shop after-hours...
And the thought caused Alec’s heart to shatter in his chest.
But, instead of dwelling on the fact that Magnus had so breezily gotten over their time together, Alec decided that if Magnus Bane was ready to move on, then Alec Lightwood was going to move on, too—
Even though it seemed like his brain was still stuck on the busy barista behind the counter.
“Yeah, sorry about that, Josh.” Alec finally came up with a reply to his date, who was still staring daggers at his head. “Magnus is just—”
“The cute bi guy at Witchlight, yeah, I’ve heard of him.” Josh let out a hearty laugh. “Everyone’s heard of him, Alec. Although, I think it’s more of a Look, Don’t Touch situation.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Uh, didn’t you just hear me?” Josh sighed with an exaggerated air. “Alec, he’s bi. Which is code for not to be trusted. Guys like him just say they’re bi so they can fuck anything that moves. He’s probably a serial cheater, too. They always are.”
“Oh. Right. Got it.” Alec nodded in understanding, before pulling his chair away from the table. “This date’s over.”
“What the hell? We just got here—”
“Yeah, but you’re an asshole, so…” Alec lightly shrugged, as he gave his date a barely-there wave. “No, thanks.”
“Oh my God. Seriously?” Josh took a slow sip of his coffee. “You’re really going to ditch our date? Because I told you the truth about bi guys? Get a grip, Lightwood.”
“Get a grip…get a grip…” Alec pretended to mull the words over in his head—
Before he gripped onto his own cup of iced coffee—
And was soon pouring its contents into Josh’s unsuspecting lap.
“What the fuck! What the fuck!” Josh jumped away from the table, his face flushing a deep red. “Fuck you, Alec Lightwood!” Josh flipped Alec the bird, as he made his way to the coffee-shop's bathroom.
Alec calmly placed his now empty coffee cup down on the table, as he shot a look back over at Magnus—
Magnus’ eyes were laser-focused on the scene unfolding in front of him, and Alec could tell that Magnus was beaming from ear to ear—
But once Magnus’ gaze caught on Alec’s, Magnus hastily put on a stoic expression, as he prudently went back to work.
******************************
It was the end of Magnus’ shift, and Alec was hovering a bit too close to the counter.
He was waiting for Magnus to come out the back, retiring his Witchlight uniform for his typical set of clothing.
As Magnus emerged from the back of the store, Alec walked up to his side, following him right out of the coffee-shop.
Magnus didn’t seem to notice Alec’s presence, as he kept his attention focused on the path ahead of him.
“Magnus? Magnus?” Alec coughed a few times, making sure to keep in pace with Magnus’ every step. “Magnus, hey.”
Magnus stopped in his tracks, slowly turning his face towards Alec’s. “Yeah? Something I can help you with?”
“Magnus. Please.” Alec was trying his best not to sound desperate, but he could hear his desperation seeping into his tone. “Please, just talk to me. I mean…if it’s not too late…”
“Too late?” Magnus quirked a perfectly manicured eyebrow over at Alec.
“Yeah…I uh…I saw you with…your girlfriend…last night? The girl with the blue hair?” Alec offered up the information, as he nervously bounced on his heels. “Is she…is she going to give you a ride home or—”
“Catarina?” Magnus couldn’t help but smirk, while a laugh bubbled through his chest. “My girlfriend?”
Magnus’ laugh tore through his entire body now, as it only grew louder and louder. “Oh my God. Oh my God. Alec, is that why you were on a date with that asshole? You thought I was already seeing someone else?”
“You’re not?” Alec’s voice was lined with hope, and he found himself taking a step closer towards Magnus. “Oh, thank fuck.”
“Where’d you even find that guy?” Magnus shook his head in confusion, before he took a step closer to Alec, too. “HotGuysWhoHateBis.com?”
Alec thoroughly chuckled, as he instinctively wrapped his arms around Magnus’ sides. “He’s just a guy from one of my classes. He’s been trying to ask me out for a while, but I was…preoccupied.”
Alec then took a moment to read Magnus’ body language, searching for any sign of discomfort or unease—
And when he didn’t find any warning signs, he bent to gingerly press a kiss on Magnus’ forehead. “I missed you, Magnus.”
“I’m still mad at you.” Magnus’ voice was soft and barely audible. “I get enough shit from the customers here. I don’t need you thinking my job is pointless, too.”
“I don’t think your job is pointless…”
“Yeah, but you don’t respect it, either.” Magnus sighed, as he moved away from Alec’s hold. “Which makes me feel pretty shitty. I respect you, Lightwood. Even when you fall asleep with your English paper barely finished…and then you wake up the next day so proud of yourself for somehow writing a paper in your goddamn sleep.”
“I didn’t think I wrote it in my sleep! I just figured I’d gotten more written than I initially thought—” Alec stopped himself mid-sentence, his eyes suddenly going wide with the realization. “Wait. That was you? You finished my paper for me?”
“Yep. I guess those two years of community college served me pretty well, huh?” Magnus smiled up at Alec, as he folded his arms over his chest. “I had to drop out, though. Ran out of cash. Decided to get a job and save up for another semester or two.”
“Magnus, I…” Alec didn’t exactly know what to say, now feeling a sense of extreme embarrassment. “I didn’t know—”
“Whatever.” Magnus blew out a loud raspberry, while quietly shuffling on the pavement. “What I’m saying is, you’re not smarter than me, Lightwood. You’re just richer. Never get those two things confused. Ever again.”
Alec firmly nodded, keeping his eyes trained on Magnus. “I won’t. I’m sorry. I’ll never say anything that fucking stupid. Ever again.”
“Okay…” Magnus clicked his tongue against his teeth, with his gaze kept towards the ground. “Um…did you want to…maybe drive me home? I mean, it’s whatever. I was just going to call an Uber or something—”
Alec chose not to respond with his words, instead taking Magnus’ hand into his own palm—
And silently heading for the Witchlight parking lot.
**********************
Magnus and Alec were back on Magnus’ familiar, living room couch.
Something on Magnus’ TV was playing, a show that featured a quite heavy laugh-track—
But Alec really wasn’t paying too much attention to it.
He was watching Magnus as he chewed through the last bite of his slice of pizza. Once the slice was successfully eaten, Magnus openly licked pizza crumbs off his fingers, softly humming under his breath with each lick of his skin…
It reminded Alec of the soft hum Magnus so often made while he was taking Alec in his mouth…
Alec’s mind gradually drifted to exceptionally graphic memories, particularly ones of Magnus confidently sucking Alec’s cock—
“Are you done?” Magnus was pointing towards the pizza box, as he licked another one of his fingers. “Do you want me to put the rest in the fridge? Or did you want to take it home or something?”
“I don’t…I’m not…” As Alec snapped back into reality, he came to an immediate conclusion. “Magnus, I don’t want you to eat pizza with anyone else.”
“What?” Magnus’ confusion showed through his tone. “What does that even mean—”
“Boyfriend.” Alec shifted towards Magnus, nearly pulling him into his lap. “Be mine. Be my boyfriend.”
Magnus nodded, as he hooked his leg over Alec’s thigh, now straddling Alec’s waist. “Yes. Okay. Yeah. Sure. Yes.”
“Really? I thought, after the whole, um, dumb barista thing…I didn’t know if you’d want to be with me—”
“Alec, are you serious? You dumped your perfectly good cup of coffee into a guy’s lap. Just because he was talking shit about me.” Magnus grinned, as he leaned towards Alec. “You defended my honor. You’re obviously boyfriend material…even if you are a little full of yourself.”
“Hmm…full of myself…” Alec grabbed onto Magnus’ side, taking in a shallow breath. “You wanna’ be full of me, too?”
“Alec.” Magnus groaned, and his eyes closed with a wince. “Alec, that was such a bad line. Oh my God. That was painful.”
Magnus took a few more seconds to recover from the awfulness of Alec’s line—
Before he pushed his hips against Alec’s, purposely grinding down into him. “You’re lucky you’re so fucking cute.”
Alec’s hands were already at the hem of Magnus’ jeans, trying to force the fabric down. “These…these need to come off…now.”
“As you wish.” Magnus moved away from Alec’s hips, smoothly pulling down his jeans. Magnus reached for Alec’s pants soon after, until they were both solely in their respective boxers and t-shirts.
Magnus moved back into place against Alec, once again grinding his hips against Alec’s...
Alec moaned at the sensation of Magnus’ length pushing at the fabric of his boxers, so casually rubbing against the clothed shaft of Alec’s now hard cock.
Magnus continued to push against Alec, letting out little whimpers of pleasure as he rested his head on Alec’s shoulder. “Alec…it feels so good…”
“Hold on…I can make it feel even better…” Alec licked a broad stripe along his palm—
Before reaching down into Magnus’ boxers, and taking hold of his cock.
Alec’s strokes of Magnus’ shaft were firm yet uneven, his concentration being totally blown by Magnus’ indecent moaning.
When Alec could hear Magnus’ breath beginning to hitch in his throat—
He pulled his hand away from Magnus entirely.
“What? No, no, no. Please.” Magnus whined, as he reached for Alec’s hand. “I was so close.”
“I know.” Alec smiled back at Magnus. “Stay right here.”
Alec carefully moved Magnus off his lap, as he momentarily stepped out of the room.
Magnus continued on with his whining, the noise only growing louder the longer Alec was out of his eyesight.
When Alec returned to the living room with lube in his hand, Magnus grabbed the bottle and briskly removed his own boxers. “Hold on. Let me just—”
“No. Hands and knees. “ Alec nodded towards the couch, and Magnus quickly followed Alec’s command.
“Open.” Alec cautiously kneeled behind Magnus, as he softly patted Magnus’ thighs. “As wide as you can.”
Magnus, once again, did as he was told, his body momentarily trembling with pleasure. He trembled even worse when he felt Alec’s boxers sliding down towards the couch, the fabric lightly brushing against the back of Magnus’ thigh on its way down.
Alec wistfully sighed, before lowering his head, just enough to align his mouth with Magnus’ rim.
He then darted out his tongue, dragging it back and forth along Magnus’ entrance—
And Magnus’ knees threatened to give out on the couch. “Sorry, sorry…that just felt really good…”
“It’s okay.” There was a smile in Alec’s voice, as he playfully kissed Magnus’ rim. “I love how sensitive you are…physically…emotionally…”
“I’m not emotionally sensitive. You’re just an asshole—”
Magnus’ words were cut off by Alec’s hand roughly wrapping around his cock.
Alec began to firmly stroke Magnus’ shaft, as his tongue returned to its previous position, steadily licking Magnus out.
Magnus desperately panted for breath, as he felt himself getting closer and closer. “Alec…I can’t…I’m gonna’…”
Magnus’ orgasm came through with a barely restrained cry, as his come spurted from his cock and directly onto Alec’s still pumping hand.
“Rest.” Alec softly spoke to Magnus, while he moved a hand towards the lube. “Just make sure you keep your ass up for me.”
Magnus silently nodded in response, as he fell forward on the couch, resting his head against its fabric—
While keeping his hips still pushed up into the air.
Magnus soon moaned against the couch cushion, as he felt Alec’s now lubed finger pressing into his entrance. “Alec…more.”
Alec obliged, sliding another finger into Magnus—
And Magnus quietly whimpered at the feel of Alec’s fingers stretching him out. “More.”
Alec hovered a third finger over Magnus’ rim—
But Magnus subtly jerked his body away from Alec’s hand. “No. I want you. Inside.”
“Okay. Just let me get a condom out of my wallet—”
“Wait.” Magnus’ blood ran cold, as soon as he heard the word condom. “We both got tested last month. Why would we need to use a condom?”
Magnus’ voice felt stuck in his throat, his heart beat now erratic and wild with fear. “Alec…did you…did you sleep with someone else—”
“No! No. I just figured…after our fight…you wouldn’t want me to…I just thought you’d need more time…”
“Alec, you’re my boyfriend now. We’re going to get into fights sometimes. It doesn’t mean I don’t want your cock like God intended.”
Alec laughed, before pulling Magnus’ hips closer to his own. “Right. Well, just let me…”
Alec adjusted his cock against Magnus’ rim, carefully sliding into Magnus—
Into his boyfriend—
And once his cock was buried several inches into Magnus, Alec pushed his chest downward, effectively “trapping” Magnus against the couch cushions.
Magnus slightly bucked his hips back towards Alec, encouraging him to please, please move.
“I’m going to fuck you. I promise.” Alec smirked, as he took a moment to run his gaze up and down Magnus’ body…
Alec thought that Magnus looked perfect, from his currently messy, sex-affected hair, all the way to the pads at the bottom of Magnus’ feet…
And it wasn’t just Magnus’ body that was perfect. It was his…everything. The way he smiled. The way he laughed. The kindness in his heart and the sweetness in his soul…
Alec then felt suddenly overwhelmed by the very concept of Magnus Bane. How did Alec get this lucky? Was Magnus just incredibly bored? Would Magnus wake up tomorrow and realize he could do so much better?
“I love you.”
“What?” Magnus’ words had completely taken Alec by surprise. He was so taken aback, in fact, that he genuinely wondered if he’d actually heard Magnus right the first time. “Did you just…did you just say you love me?”
Magnus stilled underneath Alec, as he buried his face into the couch. “Too soon, right? It’s way too fucking soon. Fuck. You don’t have to say it back, Alec. I’m just. Fuck—”
“Magnus. I love you, too.” Alec beamed down at Magnus, even though Magnus couldn’t see the expression. He then reached for Magnus’ wrists, as he pressed them further into the couch. Soon, he moved his hips against Magnus, too, his thrusts forceful and calculated. “I love you…I love you…”
Magnus’ face was wet with tears, and he discreetly wiped his skin along the couch fabric. Alec’s heartfelt admission of love had made him so emotional, but he didn’t want Alec to see him crying and think that he was in any pain...
He especially didn’t want Alec to stop.
“Mine…Magnus, you’re mine…” Alec increased the pace of his thrusts, as he softly kissed Magnus on the back of his shoulder. “All mine.”
“Yours. Yes.” Magnus was on the verge of another orgasm, his cock grazing against the couch with every single one of Alec’s thrusts. “Alec. I’m yours. I love you. I’m yours.”
Magnus’ reply was Alec’s final straw—
He spilled into Magnus not too long after that, filling Magnus up with his come.
He then slowly pulled out of Magnus, choosing to rest behind him. Alec, still in an orgasmic haze, clumsily grabbed for Magnus’ waist, wanting to make sure Magnus’ back was tucked against his chest…
But Magnus turned around in his arms, now facing Alec with a pleased grin. “I can’t believe that talking to the weirdo who pulled all-nighters at Witchlight actually worked out for me. Maia told me that you were probably a serial killer.”
“What the hell? I thought Maia liked me!” Alec frowned—
But Magnus leaned forward, quickly kissing Alec’s frown away. “She does like you! But she also said that serial killers can be really charismatic.”
Alec frowned again, and Magnus broke out into a twinkling chuckle. “I’ll tell her that she was wrong, okay? You’re not a serial killer. You’re just my boyfriend.”
“Just your boyfriend.” Alec nodded to himself, before letting out a contented sigh. “Sounds perfect.”
“Mmmhmm.” Magnus let his eyes close, suddenly feeling the effects of their lovemaking on his bones. “And when we wake up…we can take one of those IQ tests online…”
“Why?” Alec’s eyes came to a close, too, as he nuzzled closer to Magnus. “I thought we were over that whole thing…”
“Oh…no…now it’s just a friendly competition…” Magnus happily settled into Alec’s arms. “But…if I score higher than you…I’m gonna’ make you call me Professor the next time we sleep together…”
“Magnus—”
“I’m gonna’ make you raise your hand and ask me if you’re allowed to come…” Magnus lightly chuckled into Alec’s chest, his consciousness beginning to slip away from him. “Gonna’ make you read aloud from one of your textbooks while I suck on your cock…”
“Magnus…” Alec sweetly pressed a kiss to Magnus’ temple. “Go to sleep. I’ll see you when you wake up.”
“See you when you wake up, dummy…I love you…and you’re going down…” Magnus’ final words were followed by his breathing becoming peaceful and steady, as he finally drifted off into sleep.
“Love you, too, Magnus.” Alec grinned, as sleep succinctly flooded throughout his frame. “I love you, too.”

a late night rant from twitter im putting in one place, because its a trainwreck of several threads there. mostly copy/paste and still not proofread, but a collection of thoughts on gender, sexuality, personal identity, and love and support within the lgbtq community. i do really lay myself bare here so id like to ask that if you disagree or have criticism you do so respectfully and with that in mind, thank you <3 and if this means something to you itd mean the world to me if you shared it
dunno if ive said this here before but like. if you think you might be bi/pan but youre on the fence cos maybe youve never had a crush on a nonfictional guy or get more crushes on guys than on girls and you find yourself tied up in knots like "well im gay but im also attracted to nonbinary people unless theyre mostly woman-aligned but i dont wanna say im bi/pan because then people will think i like girls and like i like them theoretically but--" let go. just say fuck it! im bi/pan!
try it out and if it doesnt feel right it doesnt feel right and thats fine and in the end no matter what youll have learned a little about yourself. this is actually my advice on any gender/sexuality dilemmas you might be having. go wild. try it out. see how it feels. dont feel like you have to confine yourself to something just because youve stuck with it for some amount of time.
if youre questioning dive right into the deep end! no matter how it goes youll be a better swimmer in the end. its all not quite rigid and a little fluid anyways (for some more than others obv) so if youre unsure, man... go for it. its ok to backpedal
--
this is important advice to me because ive struggled with it multiple times in the past and this has only recently clicked and i really wish it had sooner. first it was with being... not straight in general. like i was actively dating someone of the same gender and i never considered that that meant, uh, im not straight. always "do you like boys or girl?" "uhhhhhhhhh. uh. UH"
then with being in the range of aro/ace spect. then with being nonbinary! then with being nb but primarily male. and then goddammit im just a boy. accepting that God I Love Men And Only Men (and with it that i *wasnt* aro or ace in ANY capacity) and then, very recently (like up until a couple months ago. like im p sure this year. not 2017), going back on that and admitting i was bi. it is so so freeing to just say "fuck it" and test those waters!
hell, you find something you resonate with but looks a little silly? go for it! use those bun/buns/bunself pronouns. go with stargender! ace-flux demibiromantic? hell yeah rock that shit! it can always change and you can always decide its not right and go back! h4y dudes
--
all of that especially goes for teens who dont know what the fuck theyre doing. im only 20 yea and barely 20 at that but man i wish id heard this sooner
and please dont take that as me saying "well if youre a lesbian sexuality is fluid and maybe youre actually bi"! hell no. if youre a lesbian and you KNOW youre and lesbian and couldnt ever be anything else then rock on you funky little lesbian! but if you id as a lesbian but are teetering on something like "well im attracted to some fictional and theoretical men but not any real ones and maybe its just compulsory heterosexuality but im not sure and--" dont be afraid to try a different label. its all what feels right to you and theres absolutely no harm
--
people bash on like. """mogai genders""" and nounself pronouns and the split attraction model and all that and like. yeah! those things can hurt people! personally i struggled with the split attraction bit combined with how broadly people define the ace spectrum. it can be used to hurt. and it is used to hurt. sometimes its deliberate, sometimes its not. but the hurt is there. but its not inherently good or bad.
and yeah, some of it sounds silly. hell, it sounds silly to me sometimes! but to some people hearing that label makes everything click into place, even if just for a little bit, and i take that very seriously. it is one of the best feelings in the world and i want as many lgbtq people (of any age) to experience it.
for some people it feels right to zoom waaaaaaay in and section it into lots of little bits and for others its "fuck it! i dont know shit! im just queer!" and those are both equally valid (that words been thru 12 garbage disposals but i cant think of a better one) maybe you go back n forth and thats fine too! as long as youre open to it changing or being wrong it cant hurt and, like i said, its one of the best possible feelings to have it click like that
--
as an aside: being bi can *totally* mean "im attracted to men and nonbinary people are long are they arent primarily woman-aligned" or it can mean "im attracted to everyone fuck it" personally? i use bi over pan because i feel like it better encapsulates that i *do* have preferences (i say this all the time but God I Love Men) but ultimately gender doesnt really matter to me cos everyones cute and hot and generally attractive and im not leaving anyone out because im just a little more inclined to kissing boys. but thats me!
--
as Another aside: i do still to some degree identify with uhh this is gonna sound contradictory but agender boy? or more like boy agender? boygender with left none? i just dont personally feel like its worth taking the time to explain over n over. but it used to be, for me, n i dont regret that a single bit! i wouldnt regret that even if i *didnt* still feel that way in any capacity. honestly?
i dont regret any of the ways ive identified in the past even though feeling stuck and cornered into some got a little harmful to me (and if youve gone through somethin similar and DO regret it and wish youd never heard whatever term you used thats good too. im very strongly advocating for "use whatever labels you want and if it dont fit it dont fit" here but if they did hurt you and youre still hurting about it i understand 100% just dont use it to pull others down. if it concerns you say your piece and let them decide)
--
this is personally a little hard to admit so bear with me here
honestly? ANY sort of strong identity didnt start developing in me until i was.... 14 or so? and very slowly at that. like gender evened out around 18 and sexuality just a few months ago LMAO. but up until i was a teenager i didnt really feel much of anything re: gender or attraction (and the attraction thing is pretty normal for kids and even teens tbqh!)
and i just.... didnt really think about it! i had This Name and apparently was a girl and i didnt really get what it was like to BE a girl but thats what people said and i didnt know there were other options so i went with it! the name didnt bother me either (except for when people made jokes about a Certain Historical Figure with the same one. just thinking about that i get tired)
and when it came time to actually grapple with the whole concept of being *into* people i just kinda... slunk away! no joke until like 10th grade if someone started a rumor that i was dating x or y had a crush on me i would start to avoid them entirely. lost a friend in 4th grade that way but then in hs hed turned into a TOTAL DICK so no loss there. i think part of that was also people making the assumption that i was straight though? big shrug!
i didnt even realize attraction was a thing i had until i got asked out and just kind of "oh wow??? that sounds so nice??? i feel the same??? yes??" and thats WHY i went thru varying aro/ace labels. cos it unfolded slowly (which again is totally normal if youre a teenager, so dont worry about it if youre going thru that. roll with the punches. and if youre a teen and youve got it figured out? thats totally normal too!)
and the gender thing was similar once i learned that it was an actual possibility (especially being nb, and ESPECIALLY especially being agender) i slowly just... poked at it until i figured something out (fun fact: what set me off to finally go "fuck it im not a girl at all" was being stuck in an awful hair salon chair while my mom got a haircut that took FOREVERRRRRRRRR and i was having godawful period cramps. like i knew not being a girl wouldnt DO anything about them but i made that decision then n there n didnt look back!)
and then i kept pokin at it and watching it like the seed id planted finally started to sprout and i realized i didnt actually know what kind of seed it WAS. i guess ive always been very nebulous in those aspects and its just now forming into something solid. like i said, its a little hard to admit and i... dont think ive actually talked about this in this depth before to, like, anyone?
because the "oh ive always known" narrative is the only one you ever see in popular media and sometimes even from the community itself! and theres nothing wrong with having always known! but theres also nothing wrong with being like me! but i still feel a little anxious talking about it like it somehow means im a sham.
hell, id even go so far as to say i WAS a girl as a kid! i WAS varying shades of agender and nonbinary and ???? as a teen, and i AM, like, 95% a guy right now! maybe in a few years ill be something else. none of those things contradict each other. things like that can change! its not set in stone (but like i said: for some people it is! or, like, set in slime that you left out for 5 years so now its pretty much a rock but if you really try it still squishes into something else?? none of these things invalidate the others! were all unique).
i wouldnt say that at any point ive been cis or straight, cos even when i just went with being a girl and stuff it was always a little ??? but, yknow. even if i HAD been those things at some point it wouldnt matter to me? things just are the way they are and were the way they were
--
im making myself really vulnerable here and my thought process is a mess and i ramble and repeat myself and my memory and attention span is like 2 seconds and i dont proofread but. its important i think. i dont have a lot of followers and fewer still thatre active but... that really doesnt matter.
maybe someone will retweet at least one of these messy, messy threads. maybe link it to a friend. maybe screenshot it and post it on tumblr [note: LMAO YEAH AND ITS YOU DUMBASS], or to keep for themself. if any of my words help anyone out even a little then it matters and honestly? then its the most important thing in the whole danged world. if even one person sees any of the things ive said tonight and it means *anything* to them, even if just "oh, im not alone in this" then ive succeeded here.
i dont want any of us to ever feel trapped or alone because shit! lifes too fuckin short for that! its goddamn hard being anything but cisgender and straight! sometimes it sucks! like really sucks! there have been so many times ive broken down completely over being trans and felt like, for myself, its the most awful thing in the world. its why prides so important. its why community is so important.
because even when the pressure of the world brings you down so low you think youll never escape theres something or someone there to take your hand and pull you back up, put you on your feet, and say "i know its hard. and itll get hard again. but i believe in you, and youre strong enough for this, and im here with you through every step". that goes for anyone but especially goes for us. and im not just talking about lgbtq youth here. all of us. which is *why* im laying myself completely bare here.
most of this stuff? ive either never talked about or only vaguely mentioned. but im putting it out there. because there was a point where i needed it but didnt have it, and even if its just one person, i want to give someone this advice so at least they dont have to deal with the same stuff i did. and if youre reading this? i love you. im here for you. im my dms are always open and if for some reason they arent its almost definitely an accident and if you say something ill reopen them.
and if youre someone who hates me? maybe even mutually? if it came down to it id let you come to me at your lowest moment, no questions asked, no judgement held, and at the end of it still be the same kind of enemies we were before and never speak again. there are some exceptions of course but honestly ill forgive a lot for someone who needs that kind of support. and if youre one of the people this applies to, i know youll probably never take me up on it. i dont expect you to. i dont expect you to even for a second be comfortable with that idea. thats fine. but if for some reason you ever need it, its there.
i can count on one hand the ex friends that i wouldnt give that to and thats ONLY because theyve legitimately hurt me and left lasting damage (and for some of them? its mutual. and im sorry for that, regardless of how i feel about your treatment of me im truly sorry for my actions. that probably sounds fake and anyway i digress)
and if youre a complete stranger? someone who follows me but has never interacted with anything ive posted? a mutual i havent spoken to yet? im here. and im bumbling, and awkward, and not the best at comfort but you can always come to me if you need someone. im only one man and im under a lot of stress but i swear ill do the best i can, even if its only reading and replying 3 days later and even then just listening and offer whatever gentle comfort or reassurance youll accept.
because thats important to me. thats the impact i want to leave on this world. i dont ever want anyone to feel as small, as scared, as worthless, as alone as i have. im no fighter. im not going to lead any revolutions and hell im too anxious to even go to protests but im here for support. im here to help and heal. and thats important too
--
and if you listened to that? thank you. if you just skimmed? thank you for that too. if you shared it with someone? thank you (so much). and if you dont? thank you anyways, just for the time
just know this: i love you. i dont care who you are, if youre reading this i love you and im behind you 100%. im here if you need it. stay strong, do something that makes you smile if only for a moment. take that leap of faith. dont restrict yourself for even a second
i meant to go to bed at least two hours ago so goodnight <3 be safe, drink some water, if you have any kind of pet give it some love. take care of yourself. youre the most important person in your own world and never forget that, even if you dont think you are. even if theres something or someone you treasure above everything else. dont diminish your own worth! you are alive, and you are here, and theres nothing more important than that, really. the things you love matter more than anything else. hold them close

Story Summary: Emma has a pretty good reason for disliking Happy.
I'll say this now, this fic is anti-Happy. I know his character never did anything wrong, but his actor (Michael Coleman) has tweeted homophobic things. As a result, they all started making quips about him on air without explaining it...so this is my explanation. Mentions of homophobia and Frozen Swan as well.
Also on AO3
“Didn’t you already christen him?” Emma asked. The family was gathered around their usual booth at Granny’s, having lunch. It had been so long since they had a peaceful moment, but with Ingrid long gone, there was finally an opportunity.
“We shared his name in a proper Enchanted Forest ceremony, but this is something that people do in this world,” Snow explained as she fed her son. “You have godparents you know, Ruby and Leroy.”
“Well, I don’t really need them, Neal can just have mine.”
“No, they’re still yours.” David flashed her a smile. “I was thinking maybe Regina for godmother, she’s part of the reason why we were able to save Neal in the first place.”
“I think that’s a good idea,” Snow said. “Now, all we need is godfather. I’d say Robin, but we don’t really know him that well. How about Happy? It’d keep up the tradition of using one of the dwarfs.”
David was about to agree, when he saw a frown cross upon Emma’s face. He knew that Emma wasn’t Happy’s biggest fan, but she never really explained why. It wasn’t as if they ever had any experience interacting with one another. He was technically her uncle, all the dwarfs were. It was important to him and Snow that they have a good relationship.
Emma stood up, putting down a couple of bills. “You know, I better head to the station. I have a lot of paperwork to finish up before I have my time with Henry. I’ll see you later.”
Snow frowned as she watched her daughter walk out of the diner. “She’s gotten like that whenever we mention Happy lately.”
“I don’t understand. I know she doesn’t feel comfortable around the dwarfs since she doesn’t know them well, but she’s normally not like that.”
“Maybe we should try getting them together. If he’s going to be Neal’s godfather, I want them to get along.”
Little did they know that Emma had no intention of getting along with her mother’s “brother”. She had once liked all the dwarfs fine. They could be a little intrusive and not know boundaries, but they meant well. Leroy especially had helped them with a lot of problems that faced the town and Sneezy always seemed to have her favorite candy whenever she came into the shop.
She hadn’t had much interaction with Happy when it happened. After returning to Storybrooke and going on one date with Hook, she realized that he wasn’t really for her. Elsa was there, though, and she found herself drawn to the queen. She was beautiful, strong and highly intelligent. They bonded over their powers and a small relationship developed with them. Emma had always know that she was bisexual and while Elsa would eventually have to return to Arendelle, she wanted to make it last.
One night during game planning, the two were enjoying a rare moment of silence and cuddled up together, stealing kisses in between exploring files. There had been a rough cough and they looked up to find Happy standing there, not living up to his name at all.
“Your parents wouldn’t be pleased if they knew about this,” he had said once Elsa had left. “Aren’t you with Hook?”
“We went on one date,” Emma replied. “My parents know we’re not together anymore and are perfectly fine with it.”
“Well I don’t think they’d be okay if they knew with all this. You’re a princess, Emma, certain things are expected of you. One of them being that you find a prince charming, just like your mother did.”
Happy was proven wrong, Snow and David had been thrilled when they found out about Elsa and Emma’s relationship. They even encouraged her to try to make it work when the former went back to Arendelle. Emma was relieved, but it didn’t change Happy’s words. She didn’t want to tell her parents. They loved Happy, he was a member of their family.
So, she put distance between them. It was easy for the most part, Happy didn’t come around the loft very often and at any celebrations, she could avoid him like the plague. At the end of the day, she would pick anyone but him to be Neal’s godfather, but it really wasn’t her choice.
Snow made her way into Aesop’s Tables, a bar that had appeared after the second curse. The Rabbit Hole was still around, but it was more for the wild crowd. Snow was what Regina called “classy”, it was much quieter. The dwarfs would often gather there, play darts and just overall relax with a few handcrafted beers.
She spotted Happy sitting by himself at the bar and he looked up smiling upon seeing her. “Hey Snow. What are you doing here? Night off from the baby?”
“No, just a few minutes. I heard you were hear and wanted to ask you something.” She slid onto the stool next to him. “We’re going to christen Neal in the way that parents do in this realm, so he needs godparents. Emma’s are Grumpy and Ruby, so we were hoping that you and Regina would be Neal’s.”
Happy grinned. “I’d be honored. And I’m sure Regina would appreciate the distraction from the Marian and Robin drama.”
Snow chuckled. “Great. I’m working on the guest list right now, we’ll have the ceremony at the church. Of course the after party will be at Granny’s, she’s already planning the menu. I know Leroy will bring Nova, Regina will hopefully be able to bring Robin and Roland, Elsa’s coming in to be Emma’s date…”
“Wait, Elsa?”
“Yeah, Regina’s perfected portals and Emma’s kept in touch with her.” She let out a content sigh. “I am just so glad that she’s found someone. After Neal the first, I wasn’t sure she’d be able to let herself love again.”
“She’s dating Elsa?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re okay with that?”
Snow frowned, raising an eyebrow. “Of course I am. She’s a great person. I know she put up the ice wall, but she really worked hard to make up for it and she helped Emma when no one else could…”
“It’s not that. I just can’t believe you’re okay with your daughter dating a woman.”
Snow felt her stomach sink. No, this wasn’t happening. The Enchanted Forest was more accepting of same sex couples, it wasn’t like their current realm. Sure, there were a few homophobes here and there that truly believed that marriage should stay between a man and a woman, but not too many. They would be considered the outlier where they were from. Happy wasn’t like that…was he? Surely he knew that Snow had once been a romantic relationship with Ruby, just as David had with Kristoff.
“Why wouldn’t we be? It’d be a tad hypocritical not to be, considering I’ve been with a woman before David and he was with a man before he met me.”
Happy made a face. “You cannot be serious. I guess I could understand it coming from David, but you? You’re a princess, Snow.”
“So? What does that matter? Love is love. I can’t believe this is coming from you.”
“I thought Emma would’ve told you how I felt.”
Snow’s muscles tightened. “You said something about this to my daughter?”
“I caught her and the Ice Queen cuddled up on the couch, I made my feelings quite clear. I figured she told you and you set her straight.”
“There’s nothing to set straight! There is nothing wrong with being bi, gay or anything like that! Princess or not! I cannot believe you would treat your own niece like that.”
“If she’s in a relationship with a woman, than she is no niece of mine.”
Snow’s eyes narrowed, getting off the stool. “That’s fine by me, I don’t want someone like you in our family.”
“Snow…”
“No. You know, I wasn’t going to go with Robin as godfather because we barely know him, but I think that he’s the better option. At least he’s always supported this family and has no issue with my daughter’s sexuality.” She shook her head, hiking her purse up over her shoulder. “Stay away from my family or you’ll regret it.”
Storming out the door, Snow was seeing red. She knew she should head back to the loft and tell David all about what happened, but she had a stop to make first. Getting in her car, she headed straight to the station. It was one of Emma’s rare shifts where she was working by herself, so she knew she’d be alone. She walked straight in and sat in front of her desk.
“You didn’t tell me.”
Emma looked up, confused. “Huh?”
“What Happy said, you didn’t tell me.”
“Oh.” Emma frowned. “Well, when you found out about Elsa, you were accepting. That’s what matters.”
“You still should’ve told me. I’m your mother, if you had told me, I could’ve chewed him out…”
“And that’s not what I wanted. Mom, he’s family, your brother. He was there for you in the Enchanted Forest when no one else was. I wasn’t going to make you pick between us.”
“I will always pick you, Emma.” Snow took her hand and squeezed it. “You know he’s wrong, don’t you?”
“Of course I do. He’s not the first homophobic person I’ve come across.”
“I never saw it coming from him.” Snow frowned. “He is definitely not the type of man I want as the godfather to my son.”
“Wait, Mom…”
“No. I am so sorry we kept bringing him around you, Emma. If we had known…”
“But you didn’t. Look, I don’t care what he thinks. What’s important to me is that the people in my life are supportive and you are, Dad is.” She smiled. “Screw Happy.”
“I’m still sorry. If anyone ever talks to you like that again, tell me so I can kick their ass.”
“You didn’t kill Happy did you?”
“No, I was far too angry. But hey, maybe I can replace him when Leroy kicks him out of the dwarfs, because I guarantee he would.”
Emma chuckled. “Angry the not-so-Dwarf. I can see that.”

Time for Ourselves
A/N: Another Tara fic coming your way! This one was my own idea for some Tara x Reader smut that starts out with the Reader asking Tara to dance in their living room. Tbh this started because my bi af ass imagined peeling Tara out of that red dress she wore on the show. just fyi @coveofmemories @sexualemobitch @jamiemelyn @sassygeek77 <-- you said you had the hots for Tara so I had to tag you.
----
With such crazy, hectic schedules, it was difficult to spend time with the woman you loved. But it didn’t matter. You loved each other. So no matter how tired you were, you would go on a date - take some time for yourselves. That didn’t necessarily require leaving your apartment though. Most of the time it didn’t.
Quiet nights at home with homemade food, music and some romantic lighting were all you needed to have a nice date. One stipulation though was that you both got dressed up - no pajamas. “You like dinner?” she asked softly, her honey-like voice sending delicious shivers up your spine. She’d cooked your favorite meal after getting back from a case early.
“It was delicious,” you replied. You reached across the table, admiring how the red dress she wore clung perfectly to every curve of her body, the stark color playing perfectly off her skin. “And I know I say it every time you wear that dress, but you look so beautiful.”
Her tight-lipped smirk drove you wild. Tara didn’t show her emotions that easily; you had to dig for them, but once you did, she wore her heart on her sleeve. “I have to say the purple pantsuit is making me hot all over,” she laughed. It had been a new and impulse purchase.
As you cleaned up the plates, placing them in the sink and promising to actually wash them in the morning, the music on your iPod switched up. It was one of your favorites. One and Only by Adele. Neither one of you were big dancers, but occasionally the impulse overtook you. Your hand reached out, adorned with a big black ring and black matte nail polish to grab your girlfriend’s hand. “Dance with me?”
“You never want to dance,” she said.
You shrugged. “Sometimes I get the urge. You look so fine I can’t help myself.” Smiling, she pulled you toward her by the small of your back, her other hand tangled in yours while you other free hand rested comfortably on her chest.
When you weren’t looking, she dimmed the lights and pressed her forehead against yours. The way she was running her index finger down the length of your spine was giving you chills - only the best kind of course. This song always spoke to you when it came to Tara. It took a long time for the both of you to open up, having been burned so many times before and afraid of what might lie ahead, but eventually you came to, and since then your relationship had thrived.
I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
I promise I'm worthy
To hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove I am the one who can walk that mile
Until the end starts
Though a rarity, your dancing always led to very little movement, standing in each other’s arms as you started to kiss in the kitchen - it was always the kitchen. “Have I said I love you lately, Tara?” you whispered, barely grazing her lips with your own.
“Yes,” she chuckled. She kissed the side of your neck and started playing with your hair. “But I never get tired of hearing it.”
The music began to taper off. “Since neither of us have to work in the morning...” you said as you bit your lip. “I think I wanna take my girl inside and show her how much I love her.”
“Is that so?” She smiled against your lips and started backing you toward the bedroom.
Kicking off your shoes, you stepped backward and nearly fell back into the wall before catching yourself. You laughed into her neck and left little love bites on her skin as you reached toward the back of her dress to grab the zipper. While you peeled the dress below her breasts, she pushed your jacket off and pressed kisses to your collarbone.
It took you a minute to actually get the door open, too distracted by the way she was nibbling on your ear to do much else, but eventually you managed to make your way to the bed and climb on top of her. You reached behind your back and unhooked your bra, and she quickly removed her dress, leaving her in only red lace panties.
Barriers were now bothersome, so you discarded the rest of your clothes and climbed onto the bed between her legs, placing breathy kisses above the material. “You are always such a tease,” she said, grabbing your head and guiding you to where she wanted you.
“You love it,” you replied, but even you weren’t in the mood for teasing right now. All you wanted was to taste her, so you snaked your index fingers into her panties and peeled them down the columns of her legs, a deep-red blush prickling underneath her warm brown skin. She arched up underneath you, her core desperate for the feel of your tongue.
Reaching underneath her hips, you pulled her toward you and began to kiss her feverishly, never staying in one particular area for very long. Each lick and kiss made her moan. When you looked up, she was grabbing at her breasts, pinching at her sensitive nipples with her thumbs and index fingers. Your desperate movements became steadier as you licked up the length of her slit, reveling in the sounds she made; she was always so responsive. “Please, Y/N,” she breathed, her nails digging ever-so-slightly into your hair as she pushed you toward her clit.
At first you started with coy licks, knowing that she needed insistent pressure, but you wanted to play with her pretty folds a while longer. You skated your fingers lightly over her center as you kissed the bundle of nerves that was begging for release. Eventually, her breathy moans overwhelmed you, so as you started grinding against the bed yourself, you pursued your lips around her clit, humming against her as she arched into your mouth. “Oh fuck!” She reached back quickly and grasped at the blanket on your bed so tightly you could’ve sworn she’d tear it. “Oh god, Y/N, get up here right now.”
“Bossy aren’t we?” you laughed, kissing up her stomach and between her breasts.
“I’m wearing bossy pants right now,” she chuckled, turning you over and pulling your now soaked panties off.
“You’re not wearing any pants,” you retorted.
“Neither are you. Just the way I like it.”

Church Belles - Part 3
I glanced at the chrome clock on the wall once again. Only five minutes had gone by since the last time I had checked. Why does time move so slowly when you’re not having fun? Also why did we still have clocks with Roman numerals which delayed how long it took your brain to process time by at least another 2 seconds. The sheer irony of it all! I shifted around in my seat and grunted audibly. Ok, maybe I needed to calm down. “Sena, was there something you wanted to add to that?” Oko raised his bushy eyebrows at me. “No, I think we’ve gone over all our concerns. I’ll draft a letter of agreement and send it over to you by Friday.” My response was shrill as I tried to hide my impatience and irritation. “Sounds wonderful! Me daa se[1].” Mrs. Koranteng beamed, slamming her red talon-like acrylic nails on the conference room table. “Ok, let’s go over their sales numbers again so I can be sure I understand it.” It took all of my will power not to roll my eyes.
Had it been any other day, I would have been thrilled to be in Mrs. Koranteng’s presence. She was such a powerful force in Ghanaian second-hand goods trade, president of the Makola Market Women’s Association, and the main distributor of most household brands in the country. Her diamond rings almost blinded us as the rays of sunlight reflected off of them. Everything about this woman glistened and screamed opulence, from the stone beads bordering her gigantic kaba[2] sleeves, right down to her white teeth which contrasted her smooth glowy dark skin each time she gave me that wide I-have-fuck-you-money grin. Our most valued client, no doubt, and I was impressed by how quickly she had turned her inheritance from her late husband into a fortune at 42 years. Her constant show of affection and warmth masked how meticulous and ruthless she could be in negotiations. Growing up in the busy streets of Kumasi had toughened her up into becoming a master haggler. Her hands were slightly callused, perhaps remnants from an early farm life. Still she was comfortable with patiently letting the experts talk in circles before interjecting with tough questions or a final well thought out plan.
Today’s meeting was no exception. We were providing legal counsel for a new chain of supermarkets Mrs. Koranteng’s company, GyeNyame[3] Inc was acquiring and had presented a very detailed proposal. However, I quickly realized that this meeting might drag on longer than expected since Mrs. Koranteng did not want to spend a single pesewa[4] above what she considered to be a fair price. Then suddenly she glanced at her phone, smiled to herself and changed her mind. “Actually, I have to leave now but let’s schedule another meeting soon. I’ll review them with my accountant tomorrow. Thank you so much Mr. Quartey and Ms. Kondoh.” I could have hugged her in that moment but instead Oko and I shook hands with her and walked her to her Porsche. On the way back we speculated about whether the message on her phone had been from the young actor she was rumored to have been dating. Oko was a cool boss; very down-to-earth with a calm confidence. If he weren’t already married, we could have made a great couple because there was such an ease with our conversations and we rarely ever disagreed about anything. I glanced at my phone and noticed 5 missed calls from Carla. I was late for our bi-weekly nail appointment so I said goodbye to Oko and dashed down the hallway to head out to lunch.
Thirty minutes later, warm bubbles were caressing my feet and Akua the owner of Luxury Nails & Spa was diligently filing my finger nails. “You can’t keep me in suspense any longer. What happened?!”. Carla’s dramatic tone made me chuckle. She was sitting in the chair next to me. Her curly hair was cropped low and dyed blonde. She was wearing a loose colourful graffiti t-shirt which hugged her bra-less C-cup bosom, over ripped jeans shorts. For a second, I let the envy wash over me as I glanced down at my crisp white long-sleeved shirt and grey pleated skirt. Carla sold decorative pieces and modern African print clothing at the Art Centre and sang at the Jubilee Jazz bar to an audience of wealthy politicians on weekends for a living. She was able to afford a nice home and got to wear whatever she wanted during the week, while I worked 60-hour weeks in a skirt suit and still lived with my parents. However, I felt fortunate to still have one of my childhood best friends to hang out with routinely. Like the dating scene in Accra over the age of 30, female friends were also slim pickings as they all disappeared into domestic life after marriage. Somehow, fun edgy Carla insisted that she was living vicariously through me and kept pestering me for details about my date with Fiifi.
“What do you want me to say? We had a nice dinner and some wine and talked about life.” I avoided her eyes.
“Girl! I wanna hear about dessert though!” I burst out laughing at her ridiculous imitation of an African American accent.
Chills cut through my belly, the kind you got on a roller coaster ride, as flashes of the night before came back to me. I was hunched over the back of the sofa and my black dress had ridden up above my waist. Fiifi paused for what felt like a lifetime behind me before pulling my panties to the side and holding on to them like an equestrian gripping on to the reins of a prized thoroughbred. He whistled at the sight of my naked derrière and I felt a cool breeze against my exposed skin. Without warning he grabbed my waist and pushed up against me. The delicious pain shot through my abdomen, my thighs, then down my leg as I felt the first short thrusts. He started off with a slow rhythm, then gradually picked up speed until he was slamming into me. The clash of my wetness and wobbling behind against his muscular thighs created a slurping slapping melody that drove us both wild. “Please” I whispered urgently through gritted teeth. I wasn’t sure what my pleas were for but he seemed to understand because he smacked my ass in response and it sent fresh ripples of ecstasy through my body. He let go of my waist and gathered my braids into a pony tail pulling them towards him and arching my back. I screamed as the thrusts got deeper and felt a little ball of fire growing in my stomach causing me to hungrily push back against him. My vaginal walls instinctively clenched around his throbbing member trying to absorb every ounce of sensation from each movement. Out of nowhere he stopped and bent over to kiss me. I moaned and kissed him back hungrily.
“Seriously, you’re not gonna tell me?” Carla was jabbing at my shoulder now, snapping me out of my reverie. Akua had stopped filing my nails now and was waiting to hear my response too. “Fine, we might have made out a little bit.” I conceded, still flustered. Akua returned to her filing, evidently bored.
“Sena!! You’re so bad. You guys are like a thing now. When’s the wedding?”
“Hehehe. Oh we’re taking things slow. He literally just got divorced.”
“Good point. Things could get complicated. I think you should just try and have fun. You’re always so uptight.”
“Here we go again. Not all of us have sugar daddies sponsoring us low key.” I teased, knowing full well that Carla preferred women. Still she had gotten pregnant five years ago with a former minister who helped set up her shop.
“I wish! I get a few tips here and there but Amina is starting kindergarten soon and that means I need to step it up and make some more money.”
“Wow, she’s grown up so fast. Are you going to reach out to Jessica?”
Jessica, Carla and I had been dorm mates at St. Maria’s High School. Jessica had always intimidated me with how strictly she adhered to the school rules and how often she would scold Carla and I for being late to mass or for not making our beds before class when she was appointed school prefect. Somehow, she and Carla had gotten along fabulously even though Carla was the biggest deviant in our class.
One night I had snuck out of class during prep time, our mandatory night study session, to take a nap in our dorm room. Light sucking sounds greeted me in the darkness as soon as I opened the door - the silhouette of two young women rolling around on Carla’s bed playing out before me. Jessica and Carla panicked when I let out a cough thinking it was our house mistress. They later begged me not to tell a single soul and I had remained tight-lipped for over a decade. Nevertheless, Jessica had never forgiven me for walking in on them and had only grown more distant over the years as if it were somehow my fault for discovering their secret.
“She’s Sister Jessica now, don’t forget.” Carla corrected me. “Yes, I have an interview with her on Friday. Wanna come with? I might need backup.”
“Err…ok. If you insist. I’m still not sure why even you need to go through an interview process to enrol your child.” Carla knew Jessica and I didn’t quite get along. We had even less in common now that she was a nun and the headmistress of a catholic preparatory school.
“Oh I think it’s just a formality. Any excuse to see me, I guess.” Carla and I both giggled knowingly.
